Book Description

The scientific innovations of Galileo Galilei are pivotal to our understanding of the laws of the natural world. Drawing on his diverse studies in philosophy, mathematics, mechanics, music, astronomy, and engineering, Galileo developed revolutionary theories that thoroughly changed the disciplines of physics, mathematics, astronomy, and technology. Galileo Galilei traces the great scientist's education, describes his maverick experiments in Padua and Pisa, and recreates the ingenious pathway of his famous discoveries. Often censored and imprisoned for his radical ideas that clashed with fundamental Church doctrines, Galileo persisted in his pursuit of scientific truths to bestow upon future generations the inspiration to challenge conventional views. His theories about the motions of falling bodies, his study of pendulums, and his major discoveries in astronomy made with a self-built telescope are all clearly explained in this volume. Heavily illustrated with photographs, graphics, and technical schemes, Galileo Galilei also features a number of sidebars elucidating important details of the great mans contributions.

Oxford Portraits in Science is a collection of scientific biographies for young adults. Written by top scholars and writers, each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as the thought process leading to his or her discoveries. These illustrated biographies combine accessible technical information with compelling personal stories to portray the scientists whose work has shaped our understanding of the natural world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent choice
Our kids loved this book. Explained really well the science of light defraction, with a nice history of other cultures beliefs on the history of rainbows. Even included the biblical perspective. An excellent book to use with a unit study on light and rainbows.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated book!
This book not only tells you everything that you might want to know about rainbows, but shows through amazing and interesting illustrations the rainbows many facets. A great way to get your child curious about the natural world. Also check out "The Big Dipper and You" also by the Krupps. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives Physics a Human Side
As someone who only studied as much physics as high school curriculum required (and, as I recall, fighting all the way), I was pleased to find a book that really spoke to me.Learning about the people behind the scienceis a great way for students to develop interest in physics itself.Havingread this book I want to know more about what Marie Curie studied because Inow know why it interested her - and I feel that I have enough of a basicunderstanding to do so. I would definitely recommend this book toteachers of young adults.Karen Fox is a great writer - clear, concise, and entertaining. This book would be especially effective forcross-subject teaching - reading, writing, science/physics, and sociology. Thank you Karen Fox!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book amust read!
Karen Fox is a terrific writer, I hope she continues to write more books on physics.Physics is fun! ... Read more
