3-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's First Maisy Book
If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

This was the first Maisy book we ever bought our oldest daughter. Both of of our daughters still like it as Maisy attempts to take a bath but finds herself interrupted by Tallulah. Not one of my personal favorites, although I really can't explain why. I suspect my children are part fish, so maybe they like it because of that fact and because they love bath time (or any other opportunity to get wet).

3-0 out of 5 stars Tepid
I like Maisy as a character, and I like the look of Cousins's drawings. However, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed by this book. First, the narrative voice seems to shift back and forth between Maisy and some omniscient entity, which smaller kids may find disturbing. Second, the plot is unengaging and repetitive. Third, the character of Tallulah is poorly conceived and confusing. I prefer her books that highlight the drawing without a narrative context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maisy Mania
We were given this book as a hand me down in a bag of about 50 others. This is my 22 month old's favorite of them all and I'm here to buy more Maisy books. She can't wait until the end when Tallulah jumps in the tub so she can say "no no!" Last night I had to read it to her 3 times in a row! She loves it but I need some variety! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Tallulah, You Naughty Thing You!
Yep- it's a keeper. Maisy is just so patient and wonderful, as always. But pushy, impatient Tallulah keeps showing up. What can Maisy do?? Nothing, it seems, cause Tallulah is going to do just what she wants, which is play with Maisy. This one caused some concern for my 3-year old son, who wanted to know if I'd be angry if *his* friend, "a girl with braids" came and took a bath with *him*.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delight to read, and enticing for toddlers
When my toddler started to show reluctance at taking baths, I found this Maisy book. Now with Maisy's help, she's enjoying bathtime again, and even asks to be read "Maisy Takes a Bath" when it isn't bathtime. The illustrations are simple enough for a toddler to see and understand. It's a little strange that Maisy refers to herself in the third person. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Puppet Mouth ingenious fun
When I first got this book, I didn't really enjoy reading it to my 13 month old because the words are supposed to be a song and no tune is supplied. (The words don't rhyme so a tune would have been helpful.) Nonetheless, my daughter loved the puppet concept even then and now, at 21 months, she INSISTS that we read this book EVERY DAY. She wants the cow to kiss her with the cow lips, the donkey to bite her with the donkey mouth and the animals all to say their sounds with their mouths moving. There are a lot of clever interesting things to be described in the illustrations that you notice more and more as you read the book. So now, even though I don't find the words great, it is clear that the puppet and the illustrations are what my daughter cares about and this book is her absolute favourite (and she has a lot of books!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Must Have
We love this book. It has become an instant favorite. I bought it for my 9 month old while on vacation and she loved it from the beginning. We shared it with relatives while on our trip and everyone fell in love with this adorable & fun book. My nieces enjoyed reading it to my baby as they would take on the personality of each of the characters in the book. They had so much fun reading this book and creating interesting voices for each barnyard friend. I also shared the book with two libraians at a playgroup at the local library and they immediately took the information down and were going to order a copy for their story times. This book is a real hit. I am now adding it to the top of my list as books to buy for friends with babies. Thanks to the authors & artists. Definatley a MUST HAVE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Boogie Baby, Boogie!
When I saw this book I was intrigued... when I opened it, I was sold - what a hoot! As the other mother wrote, it's a shame they don't have a picture of the book, because seeing is believing. The "puppet" part of the book is a brown velour covered upper and lower lip - with a little red to accent the mouth and lips.

Each page is delightful - kids from my 4 month old to the neighbor children (2, 4, 8) all get a real kick out of seing the puppet lips move as you read the pages. The illustrations are colorful and comical. And everyone in the barnyard gets involved, from the donkey to a duck, cat, dog, pig, cow, mouse and even the farmer - everyone has a verse to sing in the barnyard boogie.

Thanks to the authors and publishers for a wonderful book - it's going to become a staple gift for my friends' children!

5-0 out of 5 stars My preschoolers and my daycare LOVED this book!
I recently purchased this book for my 2 and 3-1/2 year olds. It immediately captivated them!! This book has a built in PUPPET!! The description on the site here says nothing of it...but it is a MUST KNOW!! The puppet is actually a soft upper and lower lip of a donkey. Your hand goes through the back of the book and you move the lips as you read the book aloud. The barnyard characters change as you turn the pages but the same mouth is there for you to move for each. I took this book to my two youngest children's daycare/preschool and was inundated with compliments and questions about where to get this book by the staff at the daycare...both teachers and director!
I am a mother of five with my oldest about to turn 16! I know a good thing when I find it and this book is a must have for any parent of a young one!! My older children found the book very amusing as well and they even took time to read and play with it as well which created a real reading circle in our home which is amazing in itself!! (I wear a referree's shirt most of the time! hehe)

Honestly, you will not be disappointed. I am back here today for the purpose of ordering a copy for the wonderful people and children at my children's daycare/preschool! ... Read more

For a small bunny, the big world can be boiled down to "My slippers. /My pajamas. / Daddy's pajamas," and "Mother's chair. / My chair. / A low chair./ A high chair. / But certainly my chair." Back in print after more than 30years, My World by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd is every bit asreassuring and appealing to young children as its more famous companion, Goodnight Moon. Using the sameformat, this tale features the rabbit family as they go through their day:brushing teeth, eating breakfast, going fishing, reading stories, and climbinginto bed. Black-and-white illustrations alternate with full-color scenesdepicting the ever-expanding (yet still comfortably contained) boundaries of achild's life. In one image, the young bunny, clad in blue coveralls, hammershappily on his wooden truck, while Daddy, in matching coveralls, works on hisown (real) car just outside the garage. Very young fans of the classicGoodnight Moon will delight in recognizing the characters, illustrationstyle, and gentle rhythmic words in this over-50-year-old picture book. For thatmatter, older fans will be pretty tickled, too! (Ages 2 to 6) --EmilieCoulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle, Simple Masterpiece.....
Those who were raised on and loved Goodnight Moon will be thrilled to see its companion book, My World, back in print after a 30 year absence. Get reacquainted with the rabbit family as little bunny explores the safe and familiar world around him. Margaret Wise Brown's gentle, understated text: "Mother's chair./My chair./A low chair./A high chair." or "Daddy's boy./Mother's boy./My boy is just a toy./Bear" is soothing, poetic and rhythmic and beautifully complemented by Clement Hurd's engaging family scenes. In My World he alternates black and white pages featuring the simple items of little bunny's life, Daddy's toothbrush hanging beside little bunny's toothbrush, a large and small comb lying next to each other or Daddy's slippers next to bunny's own pair of slippers with full color more expansive family spreads, the family preparing and eating breakfast or all washing up and getting ready for bed. Perfect for children as young as one, My World is a comforting, reassuring, timeless treasure to be read again and again and shared and passed down to future generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled - children love it!
When I first read this book to my then one-year old daughter, I thought it was awful! She, however, would pick it up again and again, demanding to read it. It's been one of her favorites for over 9 months. In fact, I'm about to order a new copy because the first has been "loved" to death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that kids love
After reading some of the disappointing reviews I felt compelled to write. This is a favorite of my son's! I think that's what we need to keep in mind is how the kids respond to it and what it's teaching. Of course it can get difficult having to read the same book five times in a row, but it's wonderful when the kids are so interested in reading! He loves seeing the differences between "my" and "daddy's" objects. The pictures are wonderful an he is mesmerized by the colors. Yes, the text is simple however it is interesting and is not sing-song ish. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A five star review...
I see this book didn't get the best reviews. I can understand that. It appears to be a book with no meaning, but to my suprise, I found that kids see it much differently than adults. It is a concept book that contrasts things that are the childs by saying "my", and things that are someone elses, like "daddys", or "mommys". My daughter would ask questions like "is that my comb"? Anyways, it works well as a night time book. It is short and sweet, and it makes sense to kids! I think it is a really creative different book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Profoundly disappointing
After marveling at the sublime beauty of Goodnight Moon, we were extremely disappointed in My World. The illustrations are passable, but the writing is unforgivably bad. The elegant diction and serene rhythm of Goodnight moon are no where to be found. The writing in My World is insipid and lacks all the qualities that made Goodnight Moon so good. I can't believe the same author wrote both books. It's no Godfather II. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars another great imagination book
Hearing noises downstairs at night sounds magnified and scary to young children. The little girl in this book is ready and willing to try to get rid of what she perceives to be a dragon in the darkness of night and invents ways that might help. The art on the pages helps make the idea of a dragon in her house seem possible. Her parents are very understanding, and in the surprise ending, she conquers the "dragon".Delightful treatment of an age old story that has held good size groups of preschoolers spellbound at storytime. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Can't Go Wrong With Little Critter"
We are huge fans of Little Critter, so I knew we couldn't go wrong with The New Potty. The story contains typical elements found in many potty books: introduction to the new potty, playing with the new potty, accidents, transition to underpants, and eventual success. What sets all Mayer books apart? The critters talk and act like real life children. And the illustrations are a hoot! Such as the look of terror on Little's Sisters face when greeted with the pink "Critter Potty." Or Little Critter hollering for Mom when his sister misses the potty and almost wets his foot. And that pet mouse...

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen. This book contains a little instruction and a lot of entertainment. Try it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worried That Your Child Will Never Use the Toilett?
We bought this book as well as several other books, when we noticed our child wasn't buying into our advice about how convenient it is for him as well as his parents that he use the toilett, we resorted to this method and it seemed to work all by itself with little influence from the adults. We simply sat down and read it to him and voila.. it worked. I have no idea which book hat the most influence but this was one of them.

3-0 out of 5 stars i think i memorized it ?
This book is short and sweet. My girl still loves it many years after she trained. It is cute and kinda is more for girls. Is there one like it for boy's from Mercer Mayer? The sand box accident is her favorite or was it the accident when brother helped? I liked it when mom was doing laundry and she asked brother to take sister to the potty? The look on his face !

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Potty
What a great learning tool! My daughter loves this book. She is successfully potty trained! Yeepee! This book describes everything, even the time when purchasing the potty chair. It even describes "accidents", which let her know that they will happen and that it is OK. I love the way the entire family helps with the potty training. This will be very helpful when my younger child starts potty training! Great book! Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Potty a Kid Favorite
My son loves this book! We actually now have two - one for home and one when he travels to the sitter or grandparents' house, etc. The picures are colorful and attract your immediately. The story is simple and gets the whole family involved in the potty training process. It is very positive and easy to understand so little ones can follow the meaning. I (and my son) highly recommend it. My son feels it is a 'must read' when going to the potty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
I bought this book for my husband on Father's Day when our son was one-year-old. It is an all-time favorite and now that our son is two, he has almost all of the pages memorized. We read outload "My daddy can dig a hole...." and our son answers "to CHINA!". The illustrations are fantastic and the message it conveys is heartwarming.

5-0 out of 5 stars my toddler's favorite
This is a wonderful book for young children (we love it, too)...it has been my two year old's favorite book for months. He made up signs to go with different pages (waving bye on one page, pointing to the moon for another). He really seems to connect with this book...and it seems to comfort him when Daddy is working late.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
My 2 year old loves this book. It's perfect for the dad who is a triathlete! Daddy runs, bikes and swims. I'm looking forward to getting the Mommy book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hits the mark
The imagery here is excellent. The pitures are simply beautiful and the message is wholesome. I found myself lingering on each page for quite a while. There is plenty to occupy a child's attention on each page, as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Silver Slippers
If you're looking for a book full of motivatoin and encouragement, "The Silver Slippers" is the perfect choice. This book tells the story of a little girl who loved to dance, but never put her whole heart into it, until one day when the right motivation came along. In her class, they were to have a recital. This made the little girl glow with excitement. When she learned that the best ballerina in the class would be rewarded with being able to be the "Prima Ballerina." For the following weeks up until the recital, the little girl practiced and practiced, trying to perfect her ballet. While her friends did lived thier normal every day lives, the little girl stayed inside and worked extrememly hard. Sometimes the little girl would get down because of how long it was taking to get it right, so her mother got her a pair of silver slippers to hang around her neck. Every time the little girl danced, she wore the slippers as a reminder of the hard work she had done. When the time came to find out who the "Prima ballerina" was, the little girl became very nervous. But not for long, as she found out she got to be the star of the recital. The night came and as the girl got nervous, she looked at the slippers around her neck and took a step out on stage. Her performance was flawless. A true reward for her hard work. This book shows the determination of one little girl, and the reward she got from hard work. It is the perfect book for a bit of encouragement and motivation. Every child should have a copy of "The Silver Slippers."

5-0 out of 5 stars Prima for the prima ballerina

Book Description

If kisses were colors you'd see every one
of the bands of a rainbow that shines in the sun.

Perfect as a Mother's Day or baby shower gift, this tender book expresses the immeasurable love that parents have for their children-warmer than a wool blanket, sturdier than an oak tree, brighter than a rainbow. It's a sentiment that will soothe and delight the adults as well as their youngsters, and the lyrical verse is complemented by delicate, fanciful paintings that possess a timeless beauty and charm.

Illustrated by Alison Jay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tender, classic, imaginative
The story is a wonderful expression of love from a parent to a child. The story is simple and beautiful and the illustrations are old fashioned yet very new. My 14 month old loves the story and the extra kisses that inevitably become part of the reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Fun To Read
This is a great book, not just for kids, but for the parents who have to read it to them. My kids (4 1/2 and 3) love the slightly quirky, colorful illustrations and the simple, rhyming text. They always laugh at the fun paintings of elephants with strollers and acorn men. And it's just as much of a treat for me to read after having to endure so many mind-numbing, repititious kids books. Definitely one of the best kids/parents books to come along since Don Carter's "Heaven's All-Star Jazz Band." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessings for the whole family
I bought this book when my son was 3 years old and it has become part of our bedtime routine. Now, even my 2 year old daughter listens in. It is a wonderful tool to use when you want to teach your children the importance of spending time reading about God as a family. The illustrations are so cute and the text is easy to understand for even the littlest children. A must have for every family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful. I give is 6 stars.
This is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I've ever seen. Based on the pictures, I decided to buy it for my nieces and nephew. Then I started reading it and could not put it down. I really enjoy the style it is written in - simple but not simplified. Excellent!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
We do our devotion with our four year old every day.We love it.
Easier for a child to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homerun Devotional Book for small children!!
This book has got to be one of the best devotional books ever published or small children. The daily devotionals are short and very, very applicable to the lives of children. Children attention spans are usually short so this book meets children where they. The devotionals deal with the issues that small children deal with or think about everyday. If you are considering a devotional book for your small children, this book is a must read. Your familiy will thoroughly enjoy the time that you spend reading through this wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute books for young kids

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous
I bought this book to read to my daughter until she is old enough to read on her own. I thought the story was intriguing, with multiple prince sightings and the illustrations were absolutely extraordinary. This book is a delight to look at, never mind read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lush paintings alongside nice prose
Craft adds quite a bit to Charles Perrault's original terse version of this tale, including a scene with a wounded bird being tended by Cinderella. The bird is reminiscent of the Grimm brothers version, however, and serves a nice touch at the end. It is not the story which is so outstanding about this book, though. I was introduced to Craft's work through my college's poster fair, but nothing prepared me for the exquisite nature of her work in "Cinderella." This version embodies all the fantastic and beautiful elements which we want to see in a fairy tale like "Cinderella," but so often illustrators take an avant-garde approach, or seek to focus on Perrault's prose and ignore the chance to fully realize the story visually. However, we all know the story - we want to SEE it. Craft obliges by bringing the story to life luxuriantly and without holding back. She deserves a hand of applause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite retelling of Cinderella
Another absolutely amazing book by K. Y. Craft. Here she brings us a "more genuine" retelling of the famous tale - far more rich in detail than the Disney production. The pictures are lush images from dreams, and the story is more detailed and enjoyable. If you are looking for an alternative to the Disney version (one in which the sisters are not physically violent with Cinderella) this is the one that will make a young girl's dreams soar. My 3 year old loved it when she got it for Christmas, and it is still a favorite. I also recommend "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" by K. Y. Craft as well, which is available in an affordable paperback that should not be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kinuko Y. Craft is a genius with a heart of gold!
Okay, I love fairy tales, but I bought this book because Kinuko Y Craft illustrated it. Craft's work is absolutely stunning, not to mention romantic and atmospheric. I buy any book which has a Craft cover (Patricia McKillip's are just wonderful).

But I have to say this, in all honesty, this book just took my breath away. The paintings are almost beyond words. Trust me. You have to see them to know Craft's genius, and as one reviewer wrote, never has Cinderella looked more beautiful, more enchanting, more magical. If I didn't know better, I would think Craft really is part fae. If you love fairy tales, this Cinderella is a must for your collection.

For adults, children, and all who love magic and fantasy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rich illustrations
The dedication in this book reads: "For All Dreamers." The illustrations are ethereal and lush, very similar to the Cinderella I imagined when I first heard the story in my childhood. Craft takes her readers back to a traditional setting where the gowns are elaborate and the colors are vibrant. Little girls will especially enjoy the illustrations as they dream of their own "princess" dresses.

Fans of Kinuko Y. Craft will adore this new book. Some of you may know her for her illustrations of other children's books such as "The Twelve Dancing Princesses." Others may know her as the cover artist of many of Patricia McKillip's beautiful books. However you may know her work, you will enjoy this new edition of Cinderella. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent wordless book
I love this book! While all of Mercer Mayer's wordless frog books are delightful, this is definitely my favorite. A picture is definitely worth a thousand words in this case. From beginning to end every characters' thoughts and emotions are perfectly clear. The illustrations are delightful and the characters' body language and facial expressions are wonderfully expressive. Even very young children can look at this book and understand what is going on. ... Read more
