5-0 out of 5 stars Long Search Finally Ends
I must have read this Little Golden Book book to my daughter over 1000 times. She absolutely loved it as a child. Even though she had memorized the words she insisted on having it read to her every night and she caught me every time I tried to turn two pages at once.

For several years, she had unsuccessfully searched for this book so she could read it to her two sons aged 1 and 3. I was thrilled to see that it was recently re-published and available on Amazon[.com].

The story line involves a baby bear who hides on his father's shoulders when it is time for him to go to bed. The father bear "searches" all over the house for "little bear" who is nowhere to be found. At long last, the father bear looks in a mirror and discovers "little bear" who is perched on his shoulders. A simple story, but one which absolutely fascinated my daughter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grow Up is a Wow!
Author illustrator Nina Laden delivers a clever concept book in eye-catching acrylics. In simple patterned text and peekaboo windows, children will discover what different living things grow up to be. A playful kitten watches two orange and black fish swimming in a tank. The fish are drawn inside a window. Turn the page and the fish become eyes of a grown cat. Some of the figures may be familiar to your child, like the kitten or a puppy. Others may be delightfully fresh, such as a tadpole or a seedling. Square in shape, this board book is perfectly sized for eager little hands. The mirror on the last page reflects your little one's face that is sure to be smiling! When we discovered this book, my girls (aged 3 yrs 9 mos and 2) asked me to read it again and again. I knew I had a hit! We plan to search for Laden's previous books as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grow Up with Great Books !
I was so excited to find out that Nina Laden had come out with another board book. My 22 month old daughter really loves this new one and has practically memorized it. (She has already loved to death Peek-a-Who and Ready, Set, Go!)

At this age, my daughter is beginning to grasp the concept of little to big. It's a lot of fun to see her apply what she has learned from Grow Up! to the world around her. She is currently fascinated with differentiating babies and big girls, and from the number of times I have had to clean her kisses and nose prints off the book she obviously can't get enough of being a "big girl."

My daughter and I love the illustrations in this book (as with all of them); they are vivid, playful and clever. We have had a lot of fun making up silly guesses as to what is on the next page, and although we have read the book a couple hundred times now, she still gets excited to turn the page and announce what the image has grown up to be.

I would recommend this book concept-wise for children over eighteen months, but because there is so much to look at and talk about in the book I would also highly recommend it for any age. ... Read more

Book Description

When Max's Chocolate Chicken was first published in 1989, School Library Journal cheered, "It's cause for celebration when rabbit toddler Max and his bossy sister Ruby return to share another holiday with young readers." Now Dial is proud to present this wonderful story in an updated board book format, featuring a bright new cover illustration and fresh design.Max and Ruby are going on an Easter egg hunt, and Ruby has declared that whoever finds the most eggs will win the chocolate chicken that someone put in the birdbath. "No eggs, no chicken, Max," warns Ruby as her brother wanders off to investigate ants and acorns. But, as always, Max gets the last word—and the chocolate chicken! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book
The best part about this book is realizing -- after several readings -- how Ruby, the older sister, tries to manipulate her little brother by telling him he has to win an egg hunt to win the chocolate chicken. But of course, big sister gets humbled (and her own chocolate chicken) in the end.
This book is my kids' favorite Max and Ruby book, but they are all good, especially Bunny Cakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mitchell LOVED reading this Rosemary Wells book!
I am a 2nd grader at Anna Merritt Elementary School. My name is Mitchell. I have been reading books by Rosemary Wells. My favorite book is MAX'S CHOCOLATE CHICKEN. My favorite part was when Max took the chocolate chicken and hid. He hid so his sister wouldn't find him.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love it or leave it.
I think the previous reviewer (tabris02) has given good advice. This book will either resonate with you or it won't. We received it as a gift and were a bit puzzled by it, asking grandma, "What kind of lesson are you trying to teach our toddler?" The bulk of the story was cute, as Max mucked about in the yard while Ruby single-mindedly found every Easter egg. But the ending didn't sit well with me...selfishness with no remorse or consequences or even awareness of his sister's feelings. Years later, with three kids, I realize that siblings will learn to be competitive and selfish even without seeing those traits demonstrated in books. So, I've lightened up a bit. But I still don't find myself reaching for this book on our shelf. Of the Max and Ruby stories, I prefer Bunny Cakes. Another of our favorite Rosemary Wells books is Fritz and the Mess Fairy (Fritz is a slob who during one amazing night tries to make it up to his family by cleaning the entire house and fixing them breakfast in bed. In the process, he makes a huge mess again in the kitchen...but his efforts to improve himself and express his love to his family are very endearing!).

5-0 out of 5 stars poor Ruby..
..thinks her younger brother has stolen the only chocolate chicken!! I can imagine little brothers acting just like Max. Another my daughter loves to have read to her.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'd recommend library-reading it first
I found this Max book to be mean-spirited. My kids own just about all the other Max books and we enjoy them. My son can sing some of them (to his own tune) and my one-year-old could recite passages from a few of the board books.

I like Max as a mischievous child, but in this one he seemed a little nastier than I felt comfortable sharing with my children. He breaks the rules and gets away with it. This isn't a hands-down non-recommendation of this particular book, but parents ought to be forewarned and maybe preview the book for free from the library before buying it. All of the other Max books are keepers and re-readers, but I found that for my particular household, this book was not a keeper even though we have thoroughly enjoyed all the others. ... Read more

Book Description

Sometimes I like to curl up in a ball
So no one can see me
because I'm so small.
Little wombat spends a day doing favorite things--what could they be? Are they your favorites, too? Let's look and see! He especially enjoys walking around and around, and doing a pigeon step till he falls down. Or sticking out his pink tongue--and pulling funny faces (now that can be fun)! And maybe he'll jump just as high as he can, and see how much noise he will make when he lands. But when the day ends and the sun starts to fall...he goes back home to mama and curls into a ball. Good night! Soft-toned illustrations portray an endearing little wombat and the warm and friendly world around him--and every page is filled with charming details that stand up to repeat viewings: cute mice, rabbits and turtles peering from behind tall grass, marching pigeons, and a menagerie of other adorable animals. The images, along with the lyrically rhyming text, combine to make a sweet-spirited bedtime story to ease young ones to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Adorable!!!!!
This book is absolutely one of the cutest books I've gotten for my son. "Sometimes I like to Curl up in a Ball" is fun, simple, and easy to read for the "baby" crowd, and also has the most gorgeous, sweet illustrations I have ever seen in a children's book. The look on that butterfly's face when little Wombat yells just makes me laugh and laugh!

I just came to Amazon today to find other books by this duo. If you have little ones, or know little ones, get a copy of this book. It would make a perfect gift -

5-0 out of 5 stars AutieTee
Illustrations rich with color and depth; words that are easily understood; and a story that simply touches the heart. I found this book perfect for my 3-year-old niece. The amazing artwork is so brilliant, it seems as if you could reach out and touch the fur of the wombat, or the koala's tuff. And, the story lulls you into the silly and precious life of it's hero as you race along on a day full of fun and glee, culminating in the heavenly peace of returning home to loved-ones. Perhaps I enjoyed it more than my niece!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
The illustrations are awesome in this book. They spark curiousity and creativity in both young and old alike. I highly recommend this book. It has become one of our favorites to give away for presents. It crawls in the mind of toddler-preschool age children... and their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to act out!
My 15 month old grandson and 3 year old granddaughter (and grandma too) love to act out the actions of this adorable wombat. Illustrations are wonderful. A big hit with everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fave from before birth
I picked up this book while pregnant with my daughter because I feel in love with the illustrations and text. I read it out loud repeatedly before she was born, and countless time while try to soothe her to sleep during her 1st weeks of life. It was the first book I memorized. As she has gotten older, we've enjoyed the book in different ways since she is now looking and pointing to the pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun learning
For every two pages there is a work of art on the right page, and a letter in lower case and upper case form on the left. The leftmost page also include a word appropriate to the work of art, a sentence, and a question for further investigation. The words are age appropriate, like rainbow, cows. peacock, girl, and balloon. Works of art include red balloon / BALLOON Rouge by Paul Klee; Young Boy with DOG by Picasso; Reading (GIRLS) by Renoir; Intitled (ICE CREAM CONE) by Warhol; Untitled (KITE) by Warhol; OCTOPUS by Calder; Pileated WOODPECKER by John J. Audobon; and Study for Homage to the Sqaure; Departing in YELLOW by Josef Albers. Questions for investigation include, Can you think of three things in YELLOW?; What song is he playing on his VIOLIN?; Judging from the expression on the woman's face in the painting, what is the QUEEN feeling?; and What four colors do you see in this paintin of an OCTOPUS?

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach about ABCs and art at the same time!
This is another wonderful book from the Baby Einstein collection, and it stars the lovable character of Vincent Van Goat (complete with bandaged ear!). Each page of this book offers a famous work of art, which in turn provides an illustration for the featured letter of the alphabet. The included questions stimulate the child's imagination and encourage creative thinking while also developing art appreciation skills. This may make the book sound too advanced for little ones, but it is clearly appropriate for a wide age range, from toddlers up to school aged children. Plus, as with all Baby Eistein books, there are thoughtful tips for parents on how best to use the book with their children. A wonderful way to enhance your child's intellectional and emotional development!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to art!
I think this book is a great introduction to art for a small child. The pictures are clear and interesting and the questions on the opposing page are stimulating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Baby Einstein Book
This book is a great way to introuduce art to a young child. It has wonderful pictures and good questions to help start a discussion with your child. IE) A is for Angel, followed by questions about how the angel differs from you. A nice way to help have a conversation with your child. I only gave it 4 stars however because I don't see it having great appeal for children younger than a year or two, whereas the Baby Einstein board books entertain my daughter for longer periods of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome art appreciation!
Makes art reallly fun for little kids! I use this book with my two year old and also with my five year old in different ways. It's a great way to get kids to talk about art and the selections are fantastic! Julie Clark has done it again! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Maisy series
If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Whty the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's workd.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books, and this is a particular favorite. The books are short and easy to read and have a certain appeal that I just haven't quite figured out yet. The stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

In this book, Maisy visits (surprise!) the fair. She visits various rides and finishes up with some cotton candy. Okay, so its not long on plot, but two-to-three year olds love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Popular among Usborne Books
I'm told this book and its companion about the squirrel are very popular among Usborne Book buyers. I know my children, ages 3 and 1, love the book! They push the durable, laminated mouse with a yarn tail through the slot holes in each page, run it along the dotted trail, push it out the back cover, and return to the front for another go. My oldest quotes the words after only a few reads (though Mr. B. scares her--maybe the mouse running down his nightshirt is too intense for her). Want a plot summary? A mouse runs through the B. family house looking for some food. He avoids the cat, learns that other mice have already eaten certain items, is announced by the parrot, scares Mrs. B., narrowly avoids Mr. B and his broom, and finally escapes the cat again after a bite of cheese. It's cute and fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2-year old loves this book!
My daughter could read this book over and over again. She just loves putting the little mouse through all the little slots. And, the language is simple enough that she has the whole book memorized now. I just ordered "The Squirrel's Tale". I anticipate that she will enjoy that one, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly popular and durable!
This is one of the most fought-over books in my house, and the one that gets left out the most. I'm surprised at how durable this book is. We've had it for several years, and despite all the use it's seen, it's still in great shape. The mouse is a separate piece that has its own clear holder on the front of the book. As you read the book, you slip the mouse through different slots as the mouse runs through the house looking for food and avoiding the cat. There is even a pattern on the back cover for making a new mouse in case the original mouse gets lost. The only suggestion I would make is to laminate the original mouse in some clear contact or something like that. I used some clear packing tape. Your kids will have a lot of fun with this book. It would also make a great gift for a preschool to reading-age child.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most read book in our household!
My son (2 yr.)and I read this book five and six times daily. I actually "catch" him poking the mouse through the slots and turning the pages when he is supposed to be taking a nap. It's the only book he has consistently requested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical fable of a mom overcoming bullies
I adore this book - Wells' usual humor and art full of colorful details is part of that. I've thought of it as great for moms - single moms too, BTW - Hazel's mom just knows when she needs help and rescues her from bad times. But I realize as I review this book that the text raises scary topics too - Hazel goes off by herself to the bakery [what age is Hazel and where does SHE live! that happens in another Wells' fav of mine, Bunny Cakes - they're badgers, maybe badgers are more trusting than human moms!] Then more scary stuff - Hazel gets lost and kids in the park are mean to her. It might be reassuring to all readers, parents and kids, that Hazel's mom miraculously heals all, but I guess this is best to read when you want to talk about something scary that has happened or is worrying your child - because if she/he wasn't already scared of kids being mean, this book would do it! The message of a strong, protective mom applies best when there are difficult people with whom your child needs help, because this only works out idyllically for Hazel and her mom, not with the kids made to fix Hazel's doll Eleanor. I counsel parents-to-be who are worried their child will someday be teased [because they're adopted or conceived with donor sperm, the topic of my book!] and this might help someone laughingly reflect on the power of love to make things all work out right - with the help of a ladyfinger or two!

5-0 out of 5 stars A new favorite
My three-year-old daughter was immediately drawn into this wonderful story of a Mom who comes to the rescue. I still have days when I wish my mom could rescue me, so I enjoyed this tale, too. And the artwork is pure delight!

Book Description

Famed for her many adventures, Frances made her debut with this title over thirty years ago. In this first Frances book, the little badger adroitly delays her bedtime with requests for kisses and milk, and concerns over tigers and giants and things going bump in the night. Long a favorite for the gentle humor of its familiar going to bed ritual, Bedtime for Frances is at last available with the warmth of full color enriching Garth Williams’s original nuanced and touching art. ‘Here is the coziest, most beguiling bedtime story in many a day.’—Kirkus Reviews (pointer).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book But Be Careful Who You Buy It For!
This was a favorite book of mine when I was a little girl and I have very fond memories of my parents reading it to me at bedtime. I wanted to buy this book for my niece but I'm a little leary of that because of the reviews about the threat of a spanking the father in the story uses to get Frances to go to bed as for the spanking part in the book either I just don't remember that part at all or maybe my parents skipped that part when they read it to me, and if they did read that part obviously I wasn't traumatised by it and I still have fond memories of the book maybe because I was like Frances a major procrastinater at bedtime who took a long time to finally get to sleep! So though I liked this book I would be careful of who it was bought for, definitely not a book to give to a child who's parents only like politically correct childern's books. Though I still have fond memories of the book I do understand why some feel uncomfortable by the spanking I Know someone who while reading the nursery rhyme The Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe to her nephew and having liking it when she was little but she was dismayed by the line she whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed but instead of not allowing him to hear the whole nusery rhyme she read it to him but skipped the whipped them all soundly part so the same thing can be done with Bedtime For Frances you can just skip the spanking part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give kids some credit!
This is the very best bedtime story ever! Frances uses every delicious, clever ploy that pops into that fuzzy little badger head of hers to try to stay up late with the older folks. Smart and creative kids are always reluctant to go to bed for fear they may miss something and she is no different. (Taking out the spanking scene would be akin to making Oliver Twist a boy scout.) Give kids some credit for recognizing humor when they hear it. If you don't want children who have a well-rounded sense of humor and an appreciation for literature and illustration, don't buy this book. If you do, buy this book and read it aloud everynight, with feeling. It's pure poetry. Then go get the others: Bread and Jam for Frances, etc. Hoban really makes you remember what it was to be a child and he has created one I am glad to know. My kids love this book and so will my grandchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spanking good book
Okay, the title of this review is a joke. The threat of spanking, mentioned by 13 (if I counted correctly) of 31 customer reviews, is offset for the following reasons. 1) The book is a classic--a great old book that has become a multi-generational tradition in many families, including many (like mine) that do not spank their kids. 2) Children live in the real world, and excessive sheltering from it is counterproductive. 3) There are very few books that deal with nighttime fears as effectively as this one (*Where the Wild Things Are* is another). 4) It is aimed at a younger audience than the other Frances books making it a good introduction to the series. 5) Like all the Frances books, it is well written, well illustrated, and quite amusing. Note--Garth Williams illustrated this one; the others were illustrated by Lillian Hoban. 6. It has wonderfully delightful examples of a very young child's (il)logic, for example, "There is a giant in my room, may I watch television?" (or something like that--I don't have the book in front of me).

I am highly amused that, for all the reviews that complain about the spanking threat, NONE of the to date complain about the smoking by Frances' father. I'm sure that MUST say something strange about Amazon's customer reviewers, but I can't figure out what!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and Kids are Smarter Than You Think!
I was a HUGE Frances fan as a child and this is my duahgter's first one (from Grandma)---My little girl has NEVER been spanked and she was in no way, shape, size or form upset by the spanking aspect. We are a super liberal, open family and to me that includes realizing that certain things were accepted in the past. My daughter's only reaction to the spaking paragraph was that Father Badger "looked like Daddy" when Frances woke him up.

Children are intelligent enough to get it. Relax a bit, people.

4-0 out of 5 stars getting quite a bad rap without much cause.
I'm quite suprised so many people take issue with this book. It was one that I loved as a child, and although I had the sort of fears that children often do, my parents were always really good about reminding me that the things in your room when the lights are off are the same things there when the lights are are on. Perhaps that's the reason this book never inspired the terror in me it seems to present to many reviewers' children.

As for the spanking issue -- I was hardly from an abusive home, but the issue of punishment was something I was always familiar with. I hardly think the book is suggesting that Frances is going to be physically abused by her parents, so much as it's showing fed-up adults convincing their child to just get some sleep.

This book might not be for the terribly young, but it's a pretty cute story about conniving for extra time before bed. I would recommend it to anyone who is up front with their children about things like 'spankings', even if they don't practice them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars McDuff a Family Favorite
My one-year-old daughter loves McDuff. The illustrations are what really make this book stand out. They convey a sense of humor that even adults can enjoy - we love when McDuff gives the baby squinty looks! We read every night but McDuff and the Baby is the only book that she will sit all the way through - smiling at every page. We look forward to more McDuff books!

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect little book, about a perfect little dog!
I loved this book! I bought it for my niece because I have aWestie. The illustrations compliment the story extremely well. Youcan really tell that the writer and illustrator both own Westies! I recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, especially little McDuffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicole, Anthony B., Megan, and Tilly LOVED this book!
We have been reading a lot of books by Rosemary Wells and McDUFF AND THE BABY is our favorite book. Nicole liked the part when McDuff met the baby because it made her feel happy. Anthony B. liked the part when McDuff growled at the baby and the baby was scared. Megan liked the part when McDuff said WOOF at the baby and the baby WOOFED back. She was happy that McDuff had someone to play with. Tilly's favorite part was when McDuff squinted his eyes at the baby and the baby laughed.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son fell in love with McDuff!
I began reading McDuff and the Baby to my son when he was 4 days old and he is now 13 months and it is still his hands-down favorite. We have purchased all of the McDuff books and the character has captured all of our hearts. I strongly recommend this book and the others in the series to all parents who want their children to love reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars For West Highland White Terrier Lovers everywhere!!!
What a great little book, when my baby nephew came down to visit us this past Thanksgiving he loved playing with our sweet West highland terriers, and now when ever his daddy reads him this book he will point to the artfully crafted pictures and Say "Nellie, Nellie!!!", which is the name of one of my dogs he really took to. It's a great book, and I hope you enjoy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Good Night
I love this book, but what is more important, my 2-year old loves it too! Even at 18 months, he would snuggle in my arms in his darkened bedroom just before bedtime, and I would recite this simple yet lovely rhyme to him from memory. He would ask me for "God" when he wanted to hear the story. Now he thinks he's too old to get cuddled before bed, but he wants to hold my hand and asks me to recite "God." This book is a blessing, and a great way to wind down the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story, Lovely Illustrations
We needed another good night book for my son's bedtime routine and I really wanted one focused on God. I got this one for his birthday, and he loves it. He loves books in general, but some he will have nothing to do with. Not this one. The pictures are beautiful and the story is even sweeter. Great choice for going to bed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful!
I love this book as much as my ...daughter. We have been reading it to her since she was a week old. If we try to read another book she wiggles around until we read this one. The art work is beautiful and the rhythm of the story is soothing. It is completely wonderful. We're going to have to buy another one because, like the Velveteen Rabbit, this book has had it's "fur loved off"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bedtime book!
We had received this book from a friend when our daughter was born. We started reading to her at 4 months of age, and this has always been one of her favorites. She is now 19 months old, and this is the only book she wants us to read at bedtime. We try others, but she always goes and gets this one. It is such a nice story, and a nice way to end the day. The illustrations are beautiful as well. This should definitely be a "must-have" for every child's book collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endearing... Sweet!
My 2 year old daughter received this book for Christmas from her great-grandmother. It's sweet, innocent, and an excellent way to incorporate God into your night time routine. The pictures at beautiful. We enjoy reading to together often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains the concept of a new baby in mommy's tummy!
Very young children cannot grasp the concept of a baby being in their mommy's tummy. Well, wouldn't you have questions at that age too? They want to know why they can't take it out and play with it!

The book, "What's Inside?" by Jeanne AshBe, does a good job of answering a young child's questions. It first describes a few things that can be opened up, and what will be found inside. Then it describes things that can be opened up, but aren't meant to be opened. It also shows what you might find inside if you do try and open the item. Lastly, there are illustrations of a mommy's pregnant belly, showing how the baby is growing inside. The last image is that of a baby in the arms of it's older sibling. So, it's explained that the baby is inside, and comes out in due time :).

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- it explains the concept of a baby being inside a tummy by first using simple ideas that even the youngest children can understand. There are "child-like" drawn illustrations and lift-the-flaps that are always enjoyable by children of all ages. Young children who are expecting a sibling are sure to enjoy this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars What's Inside?
What's inside is a delightful pop up book for preschoolers or babies. My children thoroughly enjoyed seeing "What's inside" each page. This book gave them a peek inside many objects and allowed them to get a better understanding of pregancy and birth in terms they can understand.

It invoked laughter and questions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the mom who reads this book
I love this book.My baby is still a bit too young to understand books so this one is for me.It reminds me of all the joy of her first day here, when they put her into my arms and I never knew something could feel that good. This book captures that day's experiences and feelings perfectly and serves to remind me, when I am tired and grumpy, the magic and joy that should be the overwhelming experience of having a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with very true-to-life illustrations
This is a charming, tender and very true-to-life book about what the first few minutes after giving birth are like -- really lovely. I would caution conservative families, though -- the illustrations are very realistic, this is not a "prettied-up" view of newborn babies. So if you'd rather that your children imagine newborns as looking like the Gerber baby, this may not be the book for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Home Birth Momma
This book is listed in some attatchment list as a a book to buy, be for warned if you are HOME BIRTHER this book is NOT FOR YOU. It deplicts all the medical hipe that you receive in the hospital setting. I was very dissapointed! If you are a Hospital mom this is probably your book! I suggest Welcome with Love for hombirthbabies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This is a wonderful book that I first saw at our library and had to have for our 18 month old reader. She loves the illustrations as much as I do! I'm going to order the follow up book as soon as I'm done reviewing this one!I do agree with another reviewer that this is not an appropriate gift book for somone who has had a particularly long and painful labor.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!
I am a pediatric nurse and I was utterly horrified that this was a child's book. All the negative, scary words and phrases were NOT mitigated by the "pretty" watercolor drawings. My coworkers - all pediatric nurses and most, are mothers were equally offended. Words like malicious and conniving. And constantly "warning" the child. Children are repeaters of phrases and I do NOT want my child or any child repeating back and around "don't say I didn't warn you" as this is the catchphrase. DO NOT BUY

4-0 out of 5 stars What to do when this happens at the zoo?
The title warns us to never, ever shout in a zoo. Wouldn't you shout if you dropped YOUR ice cream cone? The heroes innocent shout sets off an animal rampage. Cushman's illustrations are charming. Karen Woodworth-Roman

5-0 out of 5 stars We're shouting for more!
This book is hilarious. It's hardly boring. When a little girl drops her ice cream cone and lets out a bellow she sets of a chain reaction that ends up with her being locked up by the animals. The build up makes it fun to read. My kids love this book. It's got a girl main character for my daughter and plenty of outrageous humor and rough and tumble animals for my sons so everybody's happy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was very disappointed with this book, I bought it based on how much we like the author's other books "Bear Snores on , Bear Wants More and Hilda Must Be Dancing."This one is alright I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, as a matter of fact we found it boring and returned it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Curious George book
My son is two years old, and loves this Curious George book. Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop was not written by H.A. Rey, the creator of Curious George. Rather, the book was adapted from a Curious George video.

Still, it's a great story.

The Man With the Yellow Hat leaves George in the custody of Mr. Herb, at Mr. Herb's new ice cream shop. When George is unattended, he jumps on the counter, and begins adding scoops of various flavors to Mr. Herb's order! Later, he hops onto a counter near a window looking into the street. His antics draw a crowd of onlookers, and suddenly Mr. Herb has more ice cream orders than he can handle!

As always, the mischievous George escapes any real trouble, while having a lot of fun. Everything turns out well. While this book is no masterpiece, I think most Curious George fans will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop
Once again George gets into mischief when the man in the yellow hat is not looking. George keeps us in stitches as he goes from one flavor to the next. Who wouldn't want to try ALL the flavors in the ice cream shop? This is a lovely book, and my students especially enjoyed reading it the day we made our own homemade ice cream! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great choice, give as a 1st birthday gift
We checked this book out so many times at the library, we bought copies for us and to give as birthday gifts. Sweet story about cooperation of making cake and celebrating! I love Helen Oxenbury's soft watercolor illustrations - another great choice is "Going on a Bear Hunt"

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
It is funny that the description of this book online says the main character is a boy, when in fact the author leaves the gender to be decided by the reader. My children (3 boys & 1 girl) love this book, and no one ever says anything about boy or girl. We have given this book many times as a birthday gift and have always had rave reviews for it. Highly reccommed for every house with children!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and rare, gender-neutral picture book
It's interesting that some reviewers identify the child as aboy, when the author has in fact written and illustratied this storyto be gender-neutral. The child (and animals, for that matter) can be either male or female -- and that was the author's intention, as described in a note in the book. When the main characters in so many children's books are male for no reason other than the fact that Male is the default gender in our world, how nice for girls to be able to see themselves in the main character of this story (and how nice for parents to not have to change names and pronouns to provide a more balanced perspective when reading to our children). ...
