5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden and not hidden messages
I am a 2nd grade teacher who just received this book as a gift. Today I read it with my students for the first time. We loved it! Not only does the story have a good message that everyone in the family should pitch in and help, but the illustrations are wonderful. It took 2 viewings to get through all of the hidden pigs. I also think it is especially poignant that Mrs. Pigget has no face at the beginning of the book because she has no other identity except to serve her husband and sons. Reading this book led to a great class discussion and a writing assignment. A gem for any classroom or family collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simply put--men are pigs
This book tells the story of the Piggot family, whose male members are, down deep, really just pigs. In the beginning of the book, we are introduced to the father and two boys (in their British school uniforms), who are treated to a clean house and fine meals by the housewife mother, but who never lift a finger to help out or even say thank you. The mother finally gets fed up and leaves, at which point, the father and sons are turned into pigs and find that they are completely incompetent at doing the chores. Eventually, of course, mom comes back, the males turn back into people again, and everybody does the chores together, and mom even tries fixing the car. The book can be read through relatively quickly, since it contains only about 500 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother's message comes across to kids
Mother's message ("give me some help") comes across very well in this beautifully drawn book. This book, like many other Anthony Brown's books has several layers - the text, and the beautiful drawings who add to the text, but give further layers of understanding and emphasizes the message. The mother who is being "walked all over" in the beginning of the book does not stay passive and takes some action - she leaves the house and from here the road to "living like pigs" is very short, until she comes back, but now on her own terms. So nice for me, as a mother to read this book to my kids and to see how the message comes across without me saying anything...

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
Came across this one by accident. I am a beginning Spanish student and thought I'd use children's books in Spanish to help me practice the language. That's how I found Anthony Browne. I was immediately mesmerized by the storyline and artwork. Anthony Browne is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine, and my children. Every time you read this story, there is something you missed before. It's magical how he writes/draws. Since you already have the editorial review above, suffice it to say, this guy is very talented and you won't be disappointed. Then, duh, I went back and got the English version, so now my Spanish skills are soaring with the translations. Will be collecting these from now on. Thanks Anthony! - Donna.

4-0 out of 5 stars How not to be a pig.
Are you tired of working for the men of your life?, Would you like to teach them a lesson?, Would you like some deserved recognition?, Do you want to have some fun with your family?. Read toghether Piggybook by Anthony Browne, a beautiful tale about a women who's taken for granted by her family until one day she gets tired and leaves them to live as what they are, real pigs. With a happy ending, teach your children not to stereotype people only by their sex gender. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entrancing for children AND adults-A great gift idea too!
Piggins is one of those rare gems: A book interesting and simple enough for very young children to enjoy (ages 3-4), with more subtlety in the text and especially in the exquisitely detailed and humorous illustrations. The adult will also enjoy the story for the beauty of the illustrations, the tongue in cheek wit, and the delight of reading and rereading and re-examining the illustrations to catch the clues to the "who was the thief?" mystery within the story.
We read this with my 8 nieces and nephews age 1-21 and all enjoyed it. It seems we still can find a new little gem in the details on every rereading. For a beautifully illustrated and gently humorous story that is very different than the run of the mill read aloud story, every family should own this. I recommend it for a gift to families with a new baby. Parents as well as the kids will love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Mystery for Early Readers
My 4 year old daughter really enjoys the three mysteries written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Jane Dyer in the Piggins series, but "Piggins" is her most favorite. I often catch her flipping through the pages by herself in a quiet corner telling the story to herself. Dyer's illustrations are colorful and detailed. There are many things for a small child to look at. Yolen's story is as usual, a great read and keeps my daughter's attention the whole story (well, expect for when she starts asking questions!) Thank goodness the book came out in paperback, as the book is constantly in circulation at our local library. We now have all three Piggins Stories in our bookcase!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book to read aloud
This is a children's picture book written in the classic English Manor House Mystery style-- complete with a dinner party, distinguished guests, missing jewels and, of course, the butler, Piggins. I won't give away who "did it," but kids will have fun solving the mystery as you read the book to them. Part of the fun is looking at all the details in the drawings of the house. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Precioso y divertido / Cute and fun
This book (in English) was one of the favorites of my best friend's little girl for years, and the simple premise of "be careful what you get yourself into" amuses even my grown friends. The story of the mouse who wants a cookie (which requires a glass of milk, which calls for ...) and can't stop there, is a familiar plot presented in a fresh way with fun illustrations. The Spanish translation has a very natural feel.

5-0 out of 5 stars They're back!
We have loved the adventures of sweet little pigs Toot and Puddle for years. Now, they're back, with Puddle's cousin Opal in for a visit. She notices that her tooth is very wiggly, and the boys offer to help her extract it. But Opal wants it to "come out all by itself". So, they play all day long, picking strawberries and swinging on the swing. When Opal swings from the rope into the lake, she comes out minus her loose tooth! It's Toot to the rescue, armed with his diver's mask. Once they retrieve the lost tooth, another problem presents itself: the boys quietly wonder if the Tooth Fairy will know to come to Woodcock Pocket and not Opal's house. Puddle has a plan to disguise himself as the Tooth Fairy so Opal won't be disappointed. But they both fall asleep in a big chair. But it turns out the Tooth Fairy DID come and left Opal a shiny new quarter. As sweet book told in the usual, wonderful Holly Hobbie fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it possible to top yourself?
Toot & Puddle are fantastic stories about two adorable pigs that highlight the differences in people and how they can get along, matched with equally rewarding illustrations resulting in perfect combinations. This time around add cousin Opal into the mix and I was reduced to a withering mass. This journey about a first loose tooth has got to be one of the best...if not the best...of the series. The expressions and actions come through loud and clear and the journey is one acted out everyday. And, well Opal is positively Charming!

Another fantastic book from Holly Hobbie and one I intend to be gifting as much as possible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUCH a good book!
This was my *favorite* book growing up, and I still read it once in a while for kicks. It has a little bit of everything - drama, humor, action, and some good ol' fashioned moral lessons. Very entertaining for kids and their parents - definitely a must!

4-0 out of 5 stars My thoughts
I just finished a great book called Pigs Might Fly. When I saw that Dick King Smith wrote the book I had no intention on reading this book, but I did.
This book was a lot better that I thought. By the look on the cover, it looks like a baby story but once you read it you will relies it is a book for all ages. " There is nothing worse than being the smallest, the shortest or the last." It is not fun.
I think being who you are is the theme in the story. I think even though it doesn't look good it is a lot better than you think.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Super book
I thought that this was a great book, I could hardly put it down. This book was about how a pig wants to fly, but can only swim. My favorite character was Daggie Dogfoot, because he was a very cool character to read about. My favorite part of the book was when Daggie saved his owner. I think that you should read this book if you like fun and adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny!
I just finished reading this book out loud to my 11, 9 and 6 year olds and we all laughed out loud. I read it changing voices for the different characters and they just loved the very humorous Otter, "Izack". I think they will be mimicing him for many days ahead! It was a very heartwarming, family book that keeps you routing for the underdog. (It was also perfect for bedtime, nothing scarey or spooky here.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Lord, this brings back memories.
As a preteen I read every "Freddy the Pig" book except "The Clockwork Twins" and that only because my library couldn't find a copy of it. Reading these in order was one of the highlights of my trips to the local library. I'm delighted to see them being re-released in mass market editions. They are absolutely timeless and priceless additions to any child's collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Freddy Takes Off
While not the best of the stories about Freddy the Pig, this novel is one of the better ones, coming at the end of the middle cycle. The first few books, while entertaining, were before Brooks really reached his stride as a writer, and shortly after this book he was coming down from his peak. Besides exploring outer space with several friends, Freddy must also help save the Bean family from inlaws who make a plague of locusts look like fun. Even Brooks'least Freddy book is head and shoulders above most other children's books, and most can be enjoyed by adults as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Brooks
These books are the hidden gems of children's literature in the United States. They are all so warm, smart and fabulously funny. Freddy and the Space Ship is no exception. It sounds like a cliche, but these novels truly embody the spirit of timelessness. They are all a delight. Freddy and the Space Ship continues the formula, providing witty insights and familiar old characters to a new and exciting, albeit naive, story. Wonderful books. Freddy isn't too concerned about it until he receives a message in the middle of the night from his old client and friend Mrs. Peppercorn. Terrible things have been going on--gardens raided, bicycles stolen, houses broken into, and even more alarming, threatening notes demanding protection money! When Freddy--with the help of Uncle Ben, the farm animals and their very own Dragon--face the crime wave head-on the culprits are sure to get their just rewards.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fire Breathing Pig!!
I am beginning to realize that I was severely deprived as a young child. The little corner library where I got my first library card actually had a pretty poor selection of books for young readers. As a result, I grew up thinking that there were only a few Freddy the Pig books. Actually Walter Brooks wrote 26 of them. That makes Freddy every bit the equal of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Many of these books are out of print now, and hard to find, but The Overlook Press has been gradually returning them to circulation. Set in the rural Northeast at a time (the late twenties and thirties), the books recall a time when the world seemed simpler and more full of grace. "Freddy and the Dragon" is the last Freddy novel, published in the year of Brooks death, 1958.

Returning from a jaunt around New England, Freddy and Jinx the cat find themselves less welcome in Centerboro then they are accustomed. Investigation reveals that many of the town's citizens have had property vandalized mysteriously. Witnesses reported sightings of several animals, including a pig. Since many people are naturally wary of talking animals, the suspect du jour for the humans of Centerboro is Freddy and some of his friends from the Bean farm. Our pig hero has no choice but to investigate before he is either jailed or lynched.

Freddy is aided by many friends, like Uncle Ben the inventor, J. J. Pomeroy the detecting robin, Samuel Jackson the mole (and professional conscience), and the adventuring spiders, Mom and Pop Webb. His first challenge is to track down a rogue bull and bring him to justice. Percy the bull has been doing a lot of the vandalism, but Freddy discovers that Percy, although a member of the gang, is really not a bad fellow, just high spirited. Once the bull is offered a chance to stay at the Bean farm and learn how to be a gentlemen he provides Freddy with many of the clues needed to track down Jack the gangster and his evil henchanimals.

What about the dragon? Well, when Freddy is terrorized by the headless horseman who picks up extortion payments he turned to Uncle Ben for help. After a lot of banging and clanking, Ben comes up with a 3 animal dragon suit that even breathes fire. Freddy's trusty dragon is used several times to great effect, eventually bringing the nefarious criminals to justice. This same spirit of inventiveness pervades the entire story and makes it a true delight. From an atomic car to a spider that uses car headlights to signal, the characters often do the entirely unexpected.

As a child I loved these books for the many exotic and wonderful characters, and the enjoyable parts they play. As an adult, I am surprised at the naturalness and simple honesty of the tales as well. There are good guys and bad guys, but justice somehow prevails. People (and animals) have good points and failings, but, on the Bean farm, diversity, mutual respect, and support are the main order of the day. I can find the foundation of many of my own beliefs in the pages of Freddy the Pig.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy and The Dragon, a GREAT book!
Someone is wreaking havoc in Centerboro, destroying gardens, stealing bicycles and breaking windows. Animal tracks, including pig tracks, are at the scenes of the crimes. The Bean animals are being accused of these crimes. Freddy attempts to track down the crooks, including a headless horseman, with the help of a friendly dragon! As always, there is lots of action.

Book Description

A captivating cautionary tale from the acclaimed creators of The Wide-Mouthed FrogA pig with an elephant's trunk? That's what the world's very first pig looked like. He loved trotting along with his nose held high in the air, boasting of its amazing length to all he met. But one day the proud pig was too busy bragging to watch where he was trotting and he collided with a trunk that was taller, rather than longer, and much stronger than his own. From that day on, pigs--and their noses--have never been the same!Packed with spectacular pop-ups, this delightfully far-fetched fable is sure to charm fans of Faulkner and Lambert's immensely popular The Wide-Mouthed Frog (Dial). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Imagination at work!
I have read this book to my children and they loved the pop up pictures. This story tells of how a pig once had a long nose and how it came about that he now has a short nose. This story hold the interest of children of all ages. I also used this story with my special education class. It held their attention and provided us with a great activity to make. We made paper plate pigs who had pop up noses. Everyone I shared this book with enjoyed the story about a different pig. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Hide!!
My daughter simply loves this book. She loves Wibbly and all the other characters, especially Big Pig, who for some reason she always smacks. I never get tired of reading it to her and she never gets tired of having it read to her, she loves it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loves lift the flaps!
My daughter loves this book because of the lift the flaps! She absolutely loves all lift the flap books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for mother and child, just simply fantastic!
My kids, twins aged 18 months, scream "Wibbly Pig" everytime I try to sneak the book into the room. Their little faces light up. Indeed, "Wibbly Pig" was the among the first words spoken by both of them. Simply a marvelous treat for me and them, every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our daughter cries when we put it away!!!
We love this book and so does our daughter. She loves the flaps to find all of the pigs. She has loved it from the first time she saw it (6 months old). The illustrations are great and it is a good length to keep her interested,(though we usually have to read it three times before we can put it away).

5-0 out of 5 stars My three-year-old loves Wibbly!
It was the best b'day present she received this year. The pictures are CUTE - easy on the preschool eye. Finding Wibbly's buddies is fun, teaching playfulness, memory, and question ansering skills. He's on our must-read before bed. He even sleeps under her pillow. When are the stuffed Wibbly's coming?! ... Read more

Loving piggy pals Toot and Puddle are back--well, actually, Toot isn't back yet. As in Holly Hobbie's earlier Toot and Puddle, Toot has the travel bug while Puddle contentedly tends the home fires. In his postcard from Scotland, Toot promises to be home for Christmas. But ice storms and delayed flights threaten to spoil the holiday plans... until an unexpected fellow traveler saves the day.

Hobbie's marvelous illustrations are filled with telling details and subtle wit: Toot caroling his heart out in an Edinburgh blizzard with a few sheep buddies; Puddle curled up in an armchair with crayons and holiday cards (signed with a blank space before "and Puddle," in anticipation of Toot's signature). The devotion the pigs share for each other is sweet, never sickly, and young readers with best friends will know exactly how they feel, being apart at a most important time. Several more Toot and Puddle titles will also enchant, including A Present for Toot and You Are My Sunshine. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Holly Hobbie Triumphs Again--Just in Time For Christmas
The same Holly Hobbie who enchanted us Baby Boomers with her greeting card illustrations in the 60's and 70's has turned her attentions to children's literature with equal success. Adults will enjoy this series as well as their children. Toot and Puddle are two pigs who live together and are the best of friends. Toot loves to travel, but Puddle is a homebody. Toot is off on his journey, far from home, while Puddle prepares for Christmas and Toot's return. Puddle even signs all the Christmas cards "and Puddle"! Children will love Toots struggle to return home in time for Christmas with the assistance of a bearded man with a sleigh!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Christmas Story.....
It's late December and homebody, Puddle is happy to get a postcard from his ever-adventurous friend, Toot, telling him all about his family reunion in Scotland. But most of all he's happy to hear that his dear friend will be home in time for Christmas. And as Puddle gets right to work on his cards, decorations, and fruitcakes, Toot makes his arrangements to come home to Woodcock Pocket, so that they can celebrate the holiday together. But the weather doesn't cooperate, and after many delays, Toot finally lands in Boston, late on Christmas Eve. With a snowstorm raging, he can't find a bus, train or even a taxi to take him home, and so begins to hike through the deep, cold snow. Just when he thinks he can walk no further, a kindly visitor comes to his rescue..... Holly Hobbie has written an enchanting and magical story that is sure to put everyone right into the holiday spirit. Her simple, charming text is only outdone by her marvelously expressive, and evocative artwork, and both youngsters and adults will enjoy finding all the special little details in each picture. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Toot & Puddle: I'll Be Home For Christmas is a gentle, heartwarming, read-aloud story the entire family can share together, and a certain holiday classic, in the years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute treasure
This is the sweetest Christmas book I've seen in a long time. Toot is stuck trying to get home to Woodcock Pocket in time for Christmas Eve, while Puddle is busy missing his friend and readying the house for Christmas. The illustrations are stunning and the story of their reunion is a treasure. A sure-to-be favorite for 3-7 year olds who are still enchanted with all of the simple joys and magic of Christmas, and a pleasure for adults to read over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Stars -- a 5 Oink for Toot & Puddle
These lovable pigs promote so many warm character traits. Children will learn quickly that friendship still requires independence. Holly Hobbie's exquisite drawings make these perfect look-see books for children. As a Grandma consultant to Mother Goose, I vote for the positive, pig tails!

3-0 out of 5 stars Toot & Puddle : I'll Be Home for Christmas
I seem to be in the minority here. I did not like this book at all. I did, however, think the illustrations were beautiful. I felt the book did not flow very well & the story was not that great either. Just my opinion ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Oops!
We got Suddenly! for my three boys (ages 8,6, and 3) and they loved it. So they were really excited when we got them Oops!

Colin McNaughton's stories are so successful because you get to yell when you read them. My boys like loud fun books.

We really enjoyed Oops! The boys said it could have used a few more yelling parts (there aren't as many as in Suddenly!) but they enjoyed the humor and have added it to their list of favorites. ... Read more
