Book Description

From a log cabin in Kentucky to the White House, the life of Abraham Lincoln is an inspiring saga of courage and dedication. Simple words and timeless pictures weave the important threads of Lincoln's life into a colorful folk tapestry that illustrates a true American pioneer of justice.

"Zeldis's oversized gouache paintings give this picture-book biography a folkloric look that suits its larger-than-life subject. Kunhardt's brief text avoids any fictionalization and presents the important events in Lincoln's youth and many careers in a straightforward, objective fashion.... A praiseworthy effort."School Library Journal.

"Hits the high spots and finds time for memorable tidbits... Consider multiple copies."Booklist (starred review). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Young Readers Will Learn A Lot!
The perfect picture book biography about Lincoln. With bold, colorful illustrations the illustrator allows the author to cover dicey parts of Lincoln's story (ie., assassination) by portraying the subjects with folk-style looking characters. For example the scene where Lincoln is shot is appropriate for young kids to look at as it is not graphic nor bloody. Somehow, it works and allows for a discussion about how Lincoln died and why he died.Outstanding effort! Plus the book is bigger than average picture books! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Facinating book on Martin Luther King Jr.!
Students were very absorbed in this book. They found the story exciting and it stimulated a great discussion. The idea that someone could dream about Martin Luther King Jr. and see him as a child and then as an adult allowed students to think about how different dreams are from reality. Students were anxious to borrow the book and share it with their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and well written
This beautifully illustrated and well written book was a must have for my daughters library. She's a new teacher and a lover of good books. What a delight to buy this book for her!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This is the best picture book I've come across concerning the Civil Rights movement of the 60's. The previous reviewer is correct in that the abstractness of the imagery is difficult for younger children, but that is precisely the beauty of the book. With a little explaining, my third grade class was still touched by the struggle of African Americans in this country. My class consisted of numerous minorities (Asian & hispanic) and they were able to come to see that MLK was fighting for them also. The way it is told is very moving and makes the book excellent for older children as well.

I still get choked up whenever I read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars a unique approach to telling the story of MLK, Jr.
I'm a huge Faith Ringgold fan. This book is very good as expected, but my only complaint is that it is a little too abstract for the target age group (ages 4-8). For example, the kids were confused at the picture of MLK in jail as an infant and the people burning their "baggage". BUT, unique it is... just definitely in need of adult commentary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellence in Educational Literature
Dan Caldwell is innovative in his approach to make the learning experience practical, informative, and interesting.Perhaps the greatest asset to World Politics and You are the critexes (Critical Thinking Exercises) at the beginning of each chapter. Each critex helps wet the palate for thereading that follows. These exercises challenge the reader to move outsideof their comfort zone and contemplate issues relative to the reading. While starting each chapter in critical thought, I found the reading to bemuch more applicable and thought-provoking.It is truly a revolutionaryway of challenging learners to be thinkers, rather than simplyfact-gatherers.Way to go, Dr Caldwell!

4-0 out of 5 stars A new book for the new year
Caldwell makes learning facts about international politics interesting enough not to fall asleep while reading it. Unlike other books that are used for college courses this one flows. It makes the reading moreenjoyable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all who have ever wanted to be in student gov.
If you've ever wanted to be a student leader this book is essential not only for motivation but also for great little ideas you might not think up on your own. This book is not only clear and organized it is helpful beyond words. Since it was written with real advice from real student leaders it is completely true and very useful. The advice and stories included in this book helped me decide to run and eventually win my high school election. Now I'm the Junior Class President.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped a loser become a winner
This book is awesome! I had lost four elections for class president (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th) so during my Freshman year I was reluctant. This book gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to win, and win BIG! I have been elected two years in a row since reading this book and am expected to win the election for Junior Class President....

5-0 out of 5 stars It Can and Will Happen to You!
I'm sure you have that little voice inside your head Right now saying should I buy it? Or shouldnt I? Theres no way im going to win, I'm not even popular. If thats you, you definetly should buy, How To Win a Highschool Election by Jeff Marx.In this book, you get over 1,000 ideas on what and what not to do from students just like you and me who have won thier Highschool elections...

3-0 out of 5 stars no book will win you an election
This is a good book, it gives you a lot of ideas, and ways to make a great campaign. but don't get suckered, this book, and no book will win a election for you! I am the Student Council President, but i didn't win the election because of this book, although it helped. Consider this book as a friend, and not as a GUIDE.
The good thing about this book, is that it has many suggestions, but the bad thing is that if you think about it, there are just 100 suggestions, because each suggestion is written over, and over again, but with different words. But 100 ideas can be really helpful if you have no idea on how to start a high school campaign.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful indeed
This book, while seemingly inappropriate for someone in my position (I'm running as an MP in the UK election) has many, many parallels. Making friends, pressing the flesh, wearing sexy cheerleader outfits. These will be factors, I hope, that my rivals will overlook. Victory is assured. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so good, it merits being in every classroom.
Although this is a children's book, it is "must reading" for any adult who wants to re-energize their enthusiasm for the origin of America. I got this book for my grandchildren, but after reading it myself, decided that it's an adult book as well.

The author has succeeded in making the reader understand the genius of Samuel Adams of Boston. The type of grassroots politics practiced by Adams and other patriots, clearly is as valid today as in theirs.

Always focused upon the ultimate goal, "the last Puritan" was given the title by his peers of "the father of American independence". Author Fradin has been successful in pointing out why Adams deserves the title.

The story is breathtaking. If I had one wish regarding this wonderful book, it would be that every American child hears or reads the story. They would be better Americans for it.

Thanks to Dennis Fradin for writing it. I was so impressed with it, that after reading it I called the author to personally thank him.

An exciting experience awaits young and old when they pick up this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book on a great patriot leader.
My wife and I like to read books on American history to our sons (ages 7 and 8) and were absolutely delighted with this book. Samuel Adams was one of the most important of the patriot leaders, but one about whom little is said these days. That is too bad because no one was a truer, more consistent believer in freedom than he was. Samuel Adams opposed England's taxes and mercantilist trade restrictions; he was just as vociferous an opponent of slavery. Fraidin's writing is clear and easily understood by children, but this is not a childish book. The parents enjoyed and got as much out of it as did the children did. If you think it is important for young Americans to know the history and philosophy of our independence, this book is one give them. ... Read more
