Bold, block-color paintings of Maisy the mouse and friends make up this very simple, very appealing alphabet book. Maisy is a happy little rodent with a cheeky smile who journeys (in many changes of clothing) through a landscape of other animals. On the first page, she is traveling by "Bb--boat"; she sees a patch of seaweed, which opens like a door to display a hidden "Cc--crab"; her yellow sail folds back to reveal that she is riding with a stowaway "Aa--alligator"; and a pull-tab sends a purple "Dd--dolphin" leaping from the blue water. Elsewhere, insects flap their wings, a kite flutters, Maisy's prominent orange whiskers twitch, and a tortoise and a squirrel strum at a ukulele and a violin while Maisy herself plays the xylophone. This clever, effective use of pop-ups and pull-tabs make this ABC book--and perhaps the ABCs themselves--memorable. (Baby to 4) --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book to learn ABC
My two-year-old son reads this book bevery night before goes to bed. He enjoys to pull the tabs and tell what maisy and her friemds are doing. The pictures in each page are related. My son not only learns the ABC and can also makes stories with those pictures in each page. This book stimulates small child's imagination. It is a book worth to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My baby loved this book to pieces!
This book was the first to catch my baby's attention. At as early as 9 months, he was selecting this book every night. He loves to pull the various flaps and moving parts himself. I've purchased other Maisy books since then, and while my son enjoys them very much, the ABC book is still his favorite. I'm buying a second copy now to replace the first one he loved to pieces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book
This book was recommended by the Before Five In A Row series. It is a cute book with flaps that the children love to flip by themselves. For children who like animals and surprises (what's behind the flap surprises) this is a good gift and a good addition to your family library. The flaps are large enough so they are less likely to be ripped off. The flaps actually are part of the page flipped over, so it's not a small flip-flap like in the Spot Goes To School series of flap books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must book for young growing minds
Being a "book family" and spending hours searching book stores and TEST-READING so many titles before purchasing, we stumbled upon this class H.A. Rey book and it's a "REAL WINNER". Our 3 yr old grandson Derek wants it read to him every night and I being an old zoo keeper and teacher enjoy it just as much as he does. Bah humbug to those who say it is repetitious - in repetition lies the foundation for early reading ....and as far as the scientific end of it - those zoo meals are just about on target except for too many bananas - must have been George's influence on the author. RUN OUT AND GET THIS "classic" FLAP BOOK F-A-S-T !
You won't be disappointed and your early reader will adore it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Book for Every Child
I have 3 children, ages 19, 10, and 4. When my oldest was 5 or so, I stumbled across these books. This is one title in a series of 5 books that ALL my children enjoyed in their childhoods. My 4 yr. old still picks these books for bedtime most every week.

The artwork is wonderful...H. A. Rey had a wonderfully colorful and innocent style of art that is perfect for children. I as a parent like his art too. It is just really sweet.

I can only say these are great little books; everyone who sees them likes them and they make nice gifts, and are inexpensive too. Our first set finally wore out and we recently bought new ones. I am glad to see that the paper is much stronger (thicker and laminated)--these are very durable books.

These WILL be loved by your children!

4-0 out of 5 stars Feed the Animals
This is a book by H. A. Rey, the author of the Curious George series. It is a fun story for preschoolers about life at the zoo. The rhyming, Lift-the-Flap format makes for extra involvement and entertainment. Children enjoy guessing which animals are behind each flap. The illustrations are very similar to the Curious George books.

When my children were very small, sometimes Curious George was too long. This series (there are five books in Mr. Rey's Lift-the-Flap series) is a nice prelude to Curious George. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Version--just what I was looking for!
This is the perfect version of the familiar tale if you're looking for a gentler version. I think it's a good way to familiarize the youngest children with the story without scaring them. The little animals under the flaps who try to warn Little Red Riding Hood are amusing also. The illustrations are rich in color and very appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, stimulating, interactive book inspiring reading
My daughter (almost 2 years) has been hooked into reading by scratch and sniff books and lift the flap books.

I enjoy them with her...but I particularly love this book as it is humorous and appealing even to the adult reader...

My daughter loves seeing the sideline characters (underneath the flaps) who try to warn Little Red Riding Hood about the wolf...

I can't imagine why everyone doesn't give it five stars...

It's a wonderful way to spend loving and educational time with your baby.

4-0 out of 5 stars A kinder, gentler Little Red Riding Hood
To our delight, our 17-month old daughter is not too young for this beautifully illustrated Lamaze title. She becomes completely absorbed in this quick read: she especially likes the little surprises behind the story-related flaps. We love the rich illustrations, rhyming text and the non-violent version of the story, where nobody gets eaten or hacked to death with an axe. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for sharing!
My 20 month old received this book from Santa. She LOVES it. It only took one time for her to figure out what she was supposed to do. SHe pulls this book off the shelf every night and morning and says "read this". My 3.5 yr old and my 20 month old can actually share this book, each turning flaps on one page until they find their bug. The flaps are not that durable though, and I have had to make several repairs on the flaps with tape. But the concept of the book is great for the 1-2 yr old set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This author is brilliant!!
All of his seek n slide books are amazing and I highly recommend them. My daughter knew all her colors, shapes, numbers and opposites before the age of 2 because of these books. Opposites, just like the others, are made specifically for a younger child. I would say 9mo -3 yrs old. My daughter LOVES to pull the slide tabs out and they are very sturdy and have held up to constant pulling. These books teach by reinforcing what is learned in the pull tab. It is a great memory game as well. Chuck Murphy knows how to make books that younger kids will not only appreciate but actually learn fast!

Clifford the big red dog is everyone's best friend. Now, whenit's time to go to school, Clifford will be right there beside you, learningabout colors, numbers, shapes, and the letters of the alphabet. Clifford'sSchoolhouse is a big house-shaped board book with more than 60 flaps tolift. Peek behind the multicolored windows of the school to discover purpleplums, green leaves, and orange pumpkins. Venture inside to find numberedcubbies with one lunchbox, two boots, three hats, and so on up to tenbones--Clifford's nose is parked right outside that cubby. Then it's time to learn theABCs, explore shapes, and read some stories (lift the flap of a tiny book called"Rabbits" by Harold Hopper to see a picture of an ensconced bunny and the text:"A rabbit lives in a burrow").

Norman Bridwell's Clifford series (Clifford the Big Red Dog, etc.)is always a favorite with the preschool and early elementary set. Goofy yetprotective--and as big as a house--Clifford is the perfect pet (although he'sprobably pretty expensive to feed). 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun for Preschoolers
This book is wonderful for preschoolers. It teaches the abc's, counting, shapes and nursery rhymes. Our daughter loved hers so much she wore it out so I purchased another copy for her. We have several other Clifford books in our library but this is her favorite by far. Hooray for Clifford!

4-0 out of 5 stars Flapping Great Fun at School with Clifford, the Big Red Dog!
This book has many charms. It makes the idea of going to school exciting and fun for children. It also builds on the universal love of peek-a-boo as a learning tool. Many important school preparation skills are developed with this book including reading readiness, counting, colors, and shapes. The illustrations are beautiful, vivid, and appealing to youngsters. As a book that can provide lots of learning, it is a remarkable value. The book's only major drawback is that many of the flaps are hard to open. You will need to spend quite a bit of time with a metal fingernail file carefully getting them started before your child will be able to use many of the flaps.

This is a board book and should hold up to considerable use. Just in case it doesn't, you might want to buy two so you will have a back-up should you need one in the event the book ever goes out of print. This book will be a perpetual favorite, and having it disintegrate or lose its flaps could be upsetting to your child (like losing a favorite blanket or stuffed toy).

In the first section, your child is invited to school by Clifford. He invites your child to learn colors by lifting the flaps and saying what color is seen. The tops of the flaps also have the same color on them. Beneath the flaps are colored images and the words that describe the images are printed on the underside of the flaps. So this helps with learning words, as well. The colors are red, grey, yellow, orange, blue, green, purple, brown, and black.

In the second section, Clifford says, "Let's see what's in our cubbies! Count the objects under each flap!" Like the first section, there are colored images under the flaps with the words printed on the back of the flap. The numbers go from 1 through 10.

In the third section, Clifford says, "Lift a letter to find a surprise that begins with that letter." The alphabet is totally represented in the same format as the first two sections.

In the fourth section, Clifford encourages you to "Lift the flaps to find the different shapes." The same format is used.

The final section is for reading. "It's time to read! Lift the flaps to see what each story is about." Book covers are shown, and the underside of each one has a sentence or phrase. These can be easily memorized with repetition, and then you can point to words and ask your child to "read" them to you. This will help with word identification, and create self-confidence in your young reader.

After you have finished "flapping" around with your child, I suggest that you create these same experiences in flash card form. Your child will have more fun with these if she or he makes the words, letter, shapes, and images. You can extend beyond what is in this book to make your child feel like he or she is really making progress. You can praise your child for being able to exceed what's in the book.

Make learning as much fun as possible, and it will be irresistible . . . for both you and your child!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not my favorite in this line of books
This book is much busier than most of the other books in the series. The pages are crowded with images, and if your child has specific names for some of the items (like plane, instead of airplane) it is a little bit difficult to teach the letter associations.

Also, the two-page spreads usually feature more than one letter, intermixed. This is distracting. I'd rather have paid more money for a larger book that differentiates the letters more.

Usually these books feature a bold pop up at the page fold. This book uses a variety of lift the flap and pop-up techniques. Because of this, the alphabet book is less durable than others in the line. I have had to make repairs to several well-loved figures with glue and tape.

I really like the Snappy line of books, but don't feel that this is the best representation of their line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our 2 1/2 year old loves this book.
Someone got this as a gift for my 2 1/2 year old. She will not go to sleep until we read this with her. I like that around every letter there are other cleaver items with the same letter. She loves the "horse in the house" for H. And the "upsidedown Umbrella".

My only concern is that this is a popup book, so little ones can easily rip/destroy it, but it comes with the territory!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great extension of Snappy line but...
We love this book! We have the other Snappy books as well but our 17 month old will "read" this one over and over. I just have one problem. Each letter is shown with items representing that letter all around it. The letter "y" is not shown on its page - why?

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* Spot's First Day at School!
Spot discovers that school is fun and interesting in this flap book by Eric Hill. After a warm greeting by his teacher and classmates, Spot hides (under one of the flaps found on every page) when it's time to sing a song. "I can't sing," he says. There is no resolution to this (maybe some pages were torn out of my copy?), but Spot soon finds plenty to do as the disjointed plot reveals Spot's fun activities at school. These include finding dress-up clothes in a small playhouse, spelling the word "DOG" with blocks, story time by the teacher, playing teeter-totter (Spot is cleverly hidden under a flap that is part of a tree), and painting paw prints. When his mom picks him up and asks, "How was school, Spot?" he answers with a resounding "Great!" Twenty-two brightly colored pages showing Spot enjoying school after some initial uncertainty.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book to share with your toddler
Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gift for My Grandson
I feel in love with "Spot Goes to School" and will be reading it to my grandson when he gets old enough to read.He is only six months old but I am stocking up now. The illustrations are really cute and on every page there is something that easily "opens" to reveal something underneath. What an adorable book to prepare a child for going to nursery school etc.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spot Goes to School -- Great for 2-3 year olds!
Spot does it again! That dog named Spot shows little ones how he goes to school and talks about his day. From singing with Helen and Tom, to painting a picture, to reading stories, Spot let my son know it would be fun to go to preschool. We purchased the book right before my son started attending preschool and as we read it, he told me about his day, which includes storytime, painting and singing, as well as playing on the playground. The lift-the-flap books engage little ones to keep on reading. It is a nice way to end the day and naturally talk about what happened at preschool that day. Way to go Spot! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SNAPPY LITTLE COLORS IS GREAT FOR TODDLERS!
My daughter (nearly 2 years old) absolutely loves this book! It has super bright colors and awesome pop-up animals. Erika is a special needs child who has not yet spoken a word, but she knows a few signs. She is so motivated by this particular book that she signs "book" to request it. It has a great sing-song rhyming pattern that she loves and is easy for parents to read! Even our 4-year-old has memorized the story and "reads" it to her sister. I've just ordered the "snappy farmyard" to have another favorite book on hand!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Winner!
I bought this book for my son when he was 18 months old. He fell in love with the vibrant colors and pop-up creatures immediately! At 27 months he still asks for the "parrot" book regularly. We love this book so much we buy them for our friends' children and have completed our set of Snappy Pop-Up books with the other four.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snappy little Colors
The book Snappy Little Colors is great because not only is it a book to teach kids about colors, it's a pop up too. They kids can have fun learning their colors as well as learning to read better. You get to see different animals with different colors on them. I would say this book would be good for kids the ages of 1 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my son's favorites
My son is 18 months old and he loves this book-- especially the shark and the bear! I am buying 2 Snappy books for a friend's 2-year-old's birthday. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars L O V E I T ! ! ! ! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!!
A friend gave this to me as a baby shower gift and I started reading it to my son at about 4 months.

At first it was the only book (out of many) to hold his attention all the way through. It still holds his attention now at 9 months no matter what he's doing when I open it.

The print and mechanical quality are first rate. The text is very well written and if I quote phrases from the book (at non-reading times) my son will recognize them and start giggling. The illustrations are quite clever and make learning entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for parents and kids
It sounded kind of silly but we'd heard raves about this book series from one of our friends with a 2 year old so we ordered this one from Amazon. It is a well made (i.e. tough enough for tiny tots' hands) handsome little book. The story is simple enough, but the hook is that when you get to the part where each animal makes its sound, the page has a big hole where the animal's mouth is.You pick up the book, pushit against your lips and make the animal sound from the other side, pushing your lips through hole in the page. Our 3 year old son let out a huge peal of laughter to the first, and it kept his interest until the end. Then he demanded to hold the book and make the animal sounds. We're all getting better at the animal sounds and I can do a pretty mean cow now, if I do say so myself.

Highly recommended. Fun for all three of us. ... Read more

Who knew school could be this much fun? Maisy paints pictures, writes stories, dances like a ballerina, and even adds and subtracts in this interactive book about the cheery little mouse. Pull a tab to make the pencil in Maisy's paw scribble back and forth in her notebook. Lift the lid of a red chest to find costumes for dress-up. And pull another tab to see the fish in the aquarium dart from behind the plant when Maisy tosses food their way. Fans of the lovable white mouse will adore this story from Lucy Cousins, especiallypre-preschoolers who are wondering just what goes on in this mysterious school they've been hearing about. Large print, crayon-bright colors, and thickly outlined pictures make Maisy stories a favorite for the youngest readers (or almost-readers). Catch Maisy and her friends on TV (Nick Jr.), as well as in her many other endearing books, including Maisy Goes Swimming, Maisy at the Farm, and Happy Birthday, Maisy. 3-0 out of 5 stars Memorable but less desirable pull-tabs
My son enjoys all the Maisy books. Maisy Goes to School is no exception. When he talks about school and you ask him a question he correlates to Maisy. This to me is a great children's book when a child remembers. However, the "Lift-The-Flap & Pull-The-Tap" was found it to be less desirable. We have had no difficulty in the construction of other "pull-tab" Maisy books (ie "Seasons") but all the "pull tabs" in "Maisy Goes to School" do not withstand a child pulling, mostly the one for the pencil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for toddler/preschool age!
The "peek-a-boo" flaps, pull tabs, action and simple language in this book made it a big hit with our two children -- (one toddler and one preschool age)! The darling mouse, Maisy, does lots of activities at school, such as paints pictures, writes a story, dances like a ballerina, and even adds and subtracts! Like other lift the flap/pull the tab books, your child can interact with this book. My preschool age daughter has even learned to add and subtract from this book and very much enjoys "reading" the book to me! The Maisy books are a huge success in our home...we're ordering four more to add to our growing collection! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Baby Einstein Books
The pictures in this book are VERY VIBRANT. Each pages features a story in a rhyme scheme, making it sing-songy. On the back of the book, there are some tips for parents about applying the book to your child's life.

Why only 4 stars?
The flaps can tear if your child plays with this book. I wish the creases of the flaps could be reinforced.

The best way to encourage your child to read is to have books in the home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love at First Sight
My daughter LOVES (LLLLOOOOOVVVEEESSS) this book! She has other Baby Einstein books but this one is her favorite - as soon as we finish with it she will want to read it again (and again and again). She is 16 months old and already hisses at the snake, roars at the tiger and lion, growls at the bear, and hoots at the owl. Two days ago she floored me when she pointed to the tiger and said "tiger." The great thing about this book is that it has animals from many habitats (jungle, savanah, artic, forest, ocean, desert) and tells you a little about each habitat. The story is cute - Jane is looking for an elephant and travels all over the world trying to find it - and entertaining for children. My daughter listens to the story and loves lifting the flaps to uncover the animals. She has ripped two of the flaps off (the book has for ages 18 and up) but I do not regret giving it to her at a younger age. Her love for this book has grown her love for animals. A definite "must buy." ... Read more

The little red plane is getting ready for takeoff. Load the last few pieces of luggage. Check the controls. And "up, up, and away!" What a day to fly!

Young airplane buffs will undoubtedly love this highly interactive board book, even if the pull-tabs and flaps might be a tad tricky for the smallest fingers. Impressive technical details will require some explanation and definition for the toddler, but could inspire interesting and creative discussion ("Mommy, what's a Voltmeter set?" "What does 'remove the wheel chock' mean?"). The pilot's-eye view of the cockpit controls (complete with checklist and removable radio for contacting the control towers) gives readers a fascinating taste of flying an airplane all by themselves. This little picture book, with its bold colors and movable pieces, will make the next trip to the airport a whole new experience.

For more large-vehicle fun, collect Ken Wilson-Max's three other interactive mini board books: Big Blue Engine, Little Green Tow Truck, and Big Silver Space Shuttle. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it. Not just for boys.
I am writing in response to the reviewer who said that the book is especially great for boys. (let's not gender-type!) This is our daughter's favorite book. She is 13 1/2 months now and it has been her absolute favorite since we started reading it to her when she was just a few months old and we just ordered a second copy because hers is so tattered from use. Highly recommended for girls as well! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilot Seal of Approval
Another big vote for this book. As a small red plane pilot, I've given out two of these books to friends kids, with very positive results. 90% of the activities
are amazingly accurate, from "chocks away" to refueling.

I agree that it is a little fragile, as some of the cardboard effects are a bit ambitious, but worth it for the detailed appreciation of flying.

Captain Brian says "take off!"

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for rough players....
My two-year-old son loves this book but he has already destroyed more than fifty percent of it after two months of use.

This book has many interesting features, from radio sets connected by string, to "radar blips" on a screen in a cockpit, little planes "flying" through the sky, to a steering wheel that changes the view out windscreen as you "come in for a landing--and that isn't even half of the activities in the book.

The problem is that it requires a high degree of fine motor skill to operate many of the activities. The "radar blips" were difficult for me to spin, for example, and the steering wheel kept getting stuck until mommy tore it in one of her many attempts to "Fix it!" under pressure. My son also removed all of the little "flying airplanes" in less than a week of play.

Don't get me wrong--my son still LOVES this book, despite the fact that it is now falling apart! He has a blast using the things that still work, and explaining to me how the things that are broken used to work.

I would recommend waiting until a child is at least four before buying this book for them unless they are very careful players or there will be parental help all the time it is in use.

And, I would like to add that the girls in my son's playgroup loved this book as well--it is DEFINITELY not just for boys!

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book
My daughter received this book for her 4th birthday. She loves the moving parts of the plane and all the action. She reads it to herself now that she is learning to read. I highly recommend this book for all children from ages 2-6. Younger children may damage the moving pieces quickly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My 10 month old baby loves this book. She can't yet slide open the pages, but laughs when i do it for her. It's one of the books she reaches out for when its reading time. Very creative series. When you first get the book it can be difficult to slide open but once you have used it for a little while its a lot easier. The surprise element of discovery when the page slides open gets a laugh every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and exciting book for toddlers!
My son (who is now 18 months old) received this book as a gift from his Grandma for Christmas and fell in love with it immediately. At first he didn't slide the pages open to reveal the hiding baby, but now he does it like a pro. He often sits in his little chair and "reads" it to himself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, Too bad the design doesn't work!
I purchased this board book for my 18-month old son thinking it would be a neat alternative to lift-a-flaps and pop-ups. It is a good idea, but the design does not work at all!

You are supposed to be able to slide apart the pages to reveal whose mommy has a ...(curvy long tail)? However, when you try to slide the pages apart, they don't slide easily at all, even for an adult. Once you are finally able to pull apart the pages, they either don't slide all the way out to reveal the entire wording inside OR the pages pull completely off!

Very frustrating, since my son seemed interested in the text and pictures, but now he just thinks this book is supposed to be pulled apart!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for pre-schoolers...encourages participation
My son received this book when he was 1 and now at age 4 1/2 he still loves it. I do different voices for each animal asking "whose mommy has a long gray truck?", and now my son will answer in a different baby voice for each baby "my mommy does, I'm a baby elephant". We've incorporated where each animal lives and what they eat into the stories. His favorite is the baby flamingo that turns pink because it eats shrimp. The illustrations are bright and colorful and my son loves sliding the page out to "see" the hidden baby! ... Read more
