4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT GIFT BOOK - girls love this stuff!
This is a perfect gift book for that five or six year girl on your list, as long as you don't mind that she grows up thinking that the girl with the daintiest feet wins the prince's love (Cinderella) and that a kiss from a prince has magical life-restoring powers (Sleeping Beauty -- or is it Snow White?) This is not girl-empowering feminist literature, but if you're looking to please the girl (rather than her liberated mother), this is a good bet. The stories are short enough for bedtime reading to a toddler, and the pictures are plentiful, so a two or three year old could amuse herself by looking at the pictures. I would guess that the actual reading level is about second grade, and there are some words that would be challenging for a beginning reader. The book is beautifully done, with thick, glossy pages, plentiful illustrations, a girl-friendly pink cover and a nice silver edging. It is a book that should last for years. The stories are -- well -- classic Disney princess stories, with some of the more contemporary stories (Mulan, Poccahantas, Little Mermaid) as well as the standard fare. I actually enjoyed reading some of the stories aloud to a very young girl -- it was a short course refresher on Disney princess tales -- and a five year old girl to whom I gave this book drags it everywhere with her. I don't think you'd go wrong giving this to a young girl.

1-0 out of 5 stars The only kid's book I've ever thrown in the trash
This bizarre book will not make sense to your children unless they have memorized every Disney animated film every made. The stories start randomly in the middle and have no narrative flow. Many are oddly disturbing in tone and content. We received this book as a gift, started to read it to our girls and were frankly horrified. I think the most telling thing is the earlier reviewer who said that she loved the book because it was the same size as other Disney books and looked great on her shelf! That is clearly its best use...leave it on the shelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING
This is a collection of what should be wonderful, classic children's stories. Unfortunately, these versions are SO abbreviated that they make very little sense, and lack all that Disney magic. Do yourself--and your child--a favor, and buy each story as an individual book. These "collections" pack in a lot of titles, but the wonderful details and true story lines of the individual tales are sadly absent. A huge disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of tales.
This is a nice addition to your nursery or reading room. The book contains many of the classic Disney tales wonderfully adapted for easy reading.

The book is well bound and of good quality. What I really like
is that it matches the other Disney books in size and style and so looks nice on the shelf.

Each story is accompanied by wonderful illustrations, and the stories have been beautifully shortened to make for perfect reading length to keep your youngsters attention.

Over all this is a great book, and will make a wonderful addition to your nursery.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING BUT GREAT NONETHELESS!
Judging from the cover, I assumed the book was a collection of ONLY THE CLASSIC DISNEY PRINCESS STORIES; however, it has all the stories listed below:

CINDERELLA, SLEEPING BEAUTY, THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, ALADDIN, POCAHONTAS, MULAN, DUMBO, THE FOX AND THE HOUND, A BUG'S LIFE, LADY AND THE TRAMP, THE RESCUERS, BAMBI, THE LION KING, LION KING II: SIMBA'S PRIDE, OLIVER AND COMPANY, ROBIN HOOD AND TARZAN. (I didn't list them in the sequence of the book did.)

The editing of the stories almost makes them "new" (different from the movie, but not too much) and the illustrations are wonderful (however, I wish they were a bit larger.) My favorite thing about this book is the lovely ROMANTIC cover and the gorgeous SILVER edges--plus the fact that it's full of wonderful Disney love and friendship stories sure to please everyone! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great sticker fun for toddlers and preschoolers
For a recent trip we bought a large number of sticker and activity books for our toddler. These in the Sticker Stories series were very popular and helped make the trip a pleasant one.

There are seven colorful two-page spreads and one one-page picture on which to place stickers. These show various scenes from the Max & Ruby television show, including a tea party, cleaning Max's room, a visit from Louise, making a cake for Grandma and buying Grandma a birthday present. There are over 70 reusable stickers to place within these scenes, and they're labelled as to which pages they apply.

We will definitely buy more activity books from this series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I purchased this for my 5yr old son who loves Max & Ruby. I did not read it first, but I wish I had. He loved putting the stickers on the pages, but was disappointed that the stories were not the same as his books. For example, the birthday cake Ruby makes for Grandma is not the same as in the story(strawberry instead of raspberry). Also, there is too many stickers! He could not fit them all on the clean up page, and they ended up all over the page. I look forward to more Max & Ruby, but I will make sure next time I read any future sticker books first. ... Many, many adults name this book as their favorite Little Golden Book. Generations of kids have interacted with lovable, furry old Grover as he begs the reader not to turn the page—for fear of a monster at the end of the book. “Oh, I am so embarrassed,” he says on the last page . . . for, of course, the monster is Grover himself! 5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable
I look forward to the time that my son really enjoys me reading this book. This is not one of his favorites nor is it frequently read my house but still this is an excellent book. I think that my son might be a little too young for this book at the moment but I keep bringing it out and reading it to him hoping that he will finally be into this book. The Sesame Street books were favorites when I was a kid so I know they will be for my son too. I recommend that this book be for a child over the age of 2 because at 18 mos this book still has little interest for my son. For young ones try Sandra Boyton books, mouse paint and Winnie the Pooh Sweet Dreams books.

5-0 out of 5 stars children of all ages will love this book!!!
We first found this book when my nephew was born, over 18 years ago. He loved it so much we had to read it several times each time he was at our house, so we got him his own copy. We still had to read it when he came over and his parents read it to him every night(no skipping pages allowed, no matter how many times we had read it !). Both copies were completely worn out. We have been looking for more copies since then. It is surely a sign of how good this book is that it is nearly impossible to find in used book stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved this book!
This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I can still remember reading it for the first time while in line at the grocery store and thinking it was the funniest book in the world. It would make a good bed time story and would be fun for a parent to read to there child because it is very exciting for a kid. I highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute!
Kids love it. They think it's hysterical. Anytime you find a book that they love, it's a good thing. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Monster From the Very Beginning
Of course, to see a person's amazon.com blurb on a novel (or novella) such as this one, you would estimate the person's age to be either that of a parent, such as say 26 or 32, or that of a small child, perhaps four or even six. However, considering my spelling and grammar in the first sentence, you can probably deduce that the latter is not applicable. As for the former, I've got a ways to go.

Basically, I'm a college student who was so profoundly touched by this work of book that I must stress its greatness to those generations that look up to me so dearly (yes, all of them). Essentially, the repeated reading of this book at an early age for me created a lens through which all other works of suspense were viewed and interpreted. Needless to say, Hitchcock never did it for me, and waiting for twists at the end of "The Twilight Zone" was like waiting for crust at the end of a piece of pizza.

No, not a single work of suspense could top this one. Told in the most ominous second person, protagonist Grover implores the reader not to turn the pages, for there is, as the title may suggest, a flesh eating virus hidden within the pages of the book itself. Just kidding, there's actually a monster at the end of the book, and if you wish to ignore the age-old adage that "curiousity killed the cat," then you just might find this out for yourself. (I, on Grover's recommendation, did not in fact turn the pages for several months after starting the book, until my mommy assured me that it was okay. Needless to say, I trust my own mother over a Muppet.)

At the risk of giving away any scant fragment of the ending, I must cease my review here. But be forewarned, the trip to the end of the book will be a thrilling one. I'm aware that Sesame Street has released some rather predictable works before ("Cookie cookie cookie starts with C?" Thanks, Cookie Monster, for the thoroughly engaging spelling lesson), but this is not one of them. Fasten your seatbelts kids, and turn the page.

If you dare!

No, seriously, turn the page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For 5 and up
I personally liked this book. It really lets children interact with the storyline, which is to get Dora safely to the library so she can return her books. Dora asks the reader for help in finding articles in her backpack that will help her accomplish this goal.

Overall, this book was a little too advanced for my soon-to-be three year-old cousin. Be sure to buy this book for a child who's older, because it's not a hardcover book (a little one will rip this easily) and it might be a little difficult for a toddler to interact with the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
My 2 year old is a big Dora fan and this book is requested at bedtime every night. It is very interactive (there are lots of questions in it like "where is boots?" or "Can you count the books?" ) It is a good inexpensive book for any Dora fan. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Gilmore Girls are great!!
I LOVED this book! If you like the Gilmore Girls, then you would really like the book. These series of Gilmore Girls books are great and they relate to the episode. These books are very easy to read. I would strongly reccommend these books if you like Gilmore Girls!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great read from a wonderful TV show
The fourth novelized installment of the TV series told from Rory's point of view. Even though I've seen the episodes the novel covers (at least twice), the book is still fresh and entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gilmore Girls keeps on Glowing!
I loved this book! Rory's and Loreali's life is so interesting. You know that Jess causes a big factor when he comes into Stars Hallow. (You know this if you have been keeping up to the TV show on the WB) I recommend that you read the previous Gilmore Girls books first to fully understand this one. This was a great book and the only reason that I didn't give it five stars was becasue I am not sure of it's clarity to those who are not familiar with the Tv series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit weak
It is a bit weak but great after all. I don't like PKMN but I read widely so I'd say it's quite good. My advice is to read all the reviews before buying the book. But if you are foreign, I'd advice you to buy it at a local store and not from amazon.com but if you can wait a few weeks and want a nice, shiney book order it from amazon.com.

3-0 out of 5 stars I like the Story but...
All pokemon stories I find interesting and cute, especially the pictures. As with all pokemon books, Ash tries to win badges and catch pokemn; that is the basic storyline, which is ok on TV but not in text. The writing is probably for little children from the way it is, so it might be too easy for older readers. Personally, if I didn't watch the TV show I'd have difficulty comprehending what was going on. ... Read more

Isabel knows that's not how her powers work, but Kyle is relentless and she fi nally agrees. 5-0 out of 5 stars great book for all isabel fans
it is about time that someone noticed that isabel is probaly the most overlooked character of the roswell show and the books too. this book cast her and kyle as the stars(nice to include kyle too becasue he is often forgotten). it starts with kyle having nighmares every night about alex's death and the part that tess
forced him to play in it. after it starts interfering with his job, he asks isabel to dreamwalk him to take the bad parts of his nightmare out. she tells him that is not actually within her power to do and that if she tried she could possibly hurt him.

later, isabel starts to feel guilty and dreamwalks him anyway without kyle's knowledge and isabel finds that his nightmares are
worse than she thought. when she tries to return to her own body she finds that she is trapped and may never be able to return.

their is also a mild subplot involving liz and max. liz is asked to babysit a cousin in a nearby town and max tags along for the weekend. when they get there they find their 12 year old charge far from cooperative and they have an interesting weekend dealing
with some of the problems that a preteen boy goes through. this is definitely a book well worth reading for any true roswell fan.
i read most of it the first day i picked it up. truly a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Aftermath of Alien Mind Control
Kyle Valenti can't sleep. One year after the death of his friend Alex, he's haunted by terrible nightmares. Kyle knows Alex didn't commit suicide, but was murdered by the treacherous Tess, one of Roswell's no-longer resident aliens. Kyle even helped her kill him, completely oblivious at the time due to Tess's mind-control machinations.

If anyone can help Kyle come to grips with his tortured psyche, it's Isabel Evans, whose distinctive alien power is the ability to Dreamwalk - literally to enter another person's mind, while sleeping. Isabel thinks it's a bad idea. She's never done exactly what Kyle is proposing, or at as deep a level. She's afraid she might end up hurting Kyle more than helping. Once she decides to try anyway, she discovers a potentially worse problem than doing inadvertent harm to her friend - having entered his deepest dreams, she just might not be able to find her way back out...

Ruditis writes the Roswell characters wonderfully, and has a brisk, easy-to-read style. He doesn't complicate the plot with too many references to past series events, but only those necessary to the story. All the characters get a pretty fair share of air-play, so to speak, though it's definitely an Isabel story. Liz and Max have a less-interesting subplot, taking care of a wounded pre-teen cousin of Liz's, which largely comes off like an after-school special but allows for some character exploration of the teenaged alien leader and his human girlfriend.

This is really a simple and straightforward story, rather like a very good episode of the T.V. series. What makes it shine is the writing of the characters, and the depth of feeling between them. It's short and sweet - very sweet, and very good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Leave it to Zahn Stackpole
Ok first and formost-what are you playing at Chuckry? Since when did Kam Solusar look like the exact spitting image of Bruce Willis- not impressive. Apart from that- the graphics are flawless. However, never rely on the sentimentality of a writer like Stackpole to try and manipulate a fragile character like Mara Jade. It doesn't work - leave it to Zahn. Having said, Han and the saboteurs were done excellently. The love scenes between Luke and Mara achieved what they were set out to achieve, but nothing more. None of the irony was there as I think is in the novels. If you're looking for a round up of all the characters and families the extended universe has created, then this is definately the book. It has everyone and anyone- plus plenty of extras.
Round up of this graphic novel would be 'Reunion fest with corny one liners- satisfyingly spoiled by great star wars slang like 'sith spit.' Oh and the ending - well, lets just say that wud be too warming for even in Walt Disney's Oven.

Just buy it- you know you want it regardless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as most of the comics.
While this was an interesting story to read, it was pretty confusing at times. There were way too many supporting characters to keep straight and a lot of others that I'd never heard of before. The artwork was so cluttered and most of the supporting characters looked so similar to each other that it was near impossible to tell who was who. It also didn't help that the villains in the story looked like the good guys and so you couldn't keep them straight, either. However, I think Stackpole nailed the characterizations for the main characters...attitudes, facial expressions, emotions. They were all dead on. He even got the interplay between R2-D2 and C-3PO right. Speaking of interplay, I loved the scenes between Mara and Luke. They were so well done that it made you feel happy to see them together. Hopefully we'll see them together more in either the comics or the novels.

I have yet to read any of Stackpole's Star Wars novels, but if these characterizations are any indication, they should be pretty good. Unfortunately, the plethora of supporting characters and lackluster artwork made this story almost a headache to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this comic book!!
I usually don't read comic books but I decided that I would try this one. Amazingly I actually liked it. Luke and all the rest looked like they were supposed to-not like in some Star Wars comic books.
I would have preferred a novel about Luke and Mara's wedding like Han and Leia's but I have to admit that this comic was okay. So for those that like comic books or those that just want this because it has Luke and Mara's wedding--get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite (Comic books & normal novels)
The BEST of all books since the movies!

Very nice and clean drawing. (Unlike 'Dark Empire')
Very nice and kind story.
Very nice, deep feelings of family and friendships:
Luke, Mara, Solo Family, Antilles Family, Horn Family, T.Karrde, Rogues (Tycho, Janson, etc.), Jedi Academy friends,...

A must have for all, but specially for those who wonder all those people do and how they live in peacetime!

(My favorite, of all the SW books and comics I have (Sith comics, Dark Empire, X-Wing books+comics, Post-ANH books, NJO).)

This book is great. As a Spanish teacher, I can use it to encourage my students to read and enjoy things in the language they are learning. The material is already familiar to them and it makes it easier for them to read. The students love reading their favorite classic stories in another language.Even though it isn't authentic reading material from a Spanish speaking country, it is a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this book for my 5 year old daughter , she is bilingual and she loves Disney stories . She loves it , we also have the stories in english so she enjoys the same stories in both languages . It is a great book , the translation is really good.
The only comment I have heard from her is that not all the pictures have colors , she would like to have all of them in color but she still enjoys it, it is a great buy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Wipe them out...all of them" (3.5 stars)
'Darth Maul,' just to set the record straight, takes place several months before Michael Reaves' novel 'Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter,' and shortly after James Luceno's eBook 'Darth Maul: Saboteur.' While this comic is extremely impressive visually and fun to look at, in terms of plot and story it's severely lacking. There is a minimum of dialogue; the focus is on Darth Maul's killing ability.

The plot is basic: Darth Sidious sends his apprentice Darth Maul on a mission to destroy the leadership and organization of vast, galaxy-spanning criminal syndicate Black Sun, in order to minimize the possibility of any interference with his plans. Darth Maul, of course, being one to never disappoint or fail his master, embarks on his quest in his new Sith Infiltrator full of the goodies we saw in Episode I.

Even more so than most of Jan Duursema's work, this is an extremely visually impressive comic. There are plenty of imposing images of Maul standing there looking impressive and frightening, and more fight scenes than in any other Star Wars comic I believe. We get to see Maul go on killfests against tons of beings, as well as one on one fights with several others, including a Dathomiri Nightsister (one of the kind we saw in 'Infinity's End,' not the breed from 'Courtship of Princess Leia'). Unfortunately, although this book is great fun the first few times around, it loses re-readability because there is no real plot, and very little expository dialogue. In addition, by the time the end comes around, the constant "Maul against many" fights are beginning to get quite boring and predictable. To be fair, there were a few interesting scenes about the Sithly nature of the Force and how it compares to other Force users such as Jedi and Nightsisters, and there's a cool scene involving a telepath, but other than that it's just a bloodbath. In addition, there are several tie-ins to the other Darth Maul products - we see Oolth, who will later show up in the Michael Reaves novel, and are introduced to Hath Monchar, who we see in both of the other Darth Maul books. However, there is also one extremely unnecessary scene in this book which really doesn't fit the mood and detracted from my reading pleasure - a couple of pages with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan that have nothing to do with the story. I don't see why they were thrown in there, but it wasn't at all helpful to the "plot."

Overall, this is a very well drawn comic with minimal plot. If you are a "Mauloholic," a Star Wars fan, or just like a good fight, this comic is for you, but if you don't read it, you're not really missing anything.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Time To Kill
This Darth Maul Trade Paper Back is a must have for Darth Maul fans, but only if you are a Maul fan. If you are only somewhat interested in this character I do not recommend buying this TPB. The art is great and the story is action packed and answers some question that Episode 1 may have left you with. However, this book provides no real information about the Star Wars Universe or Darth Maul. So if your a Maul fan pick up this TPB for the cool art work and to see Maul kill an entire army by himself, but don't expect any big suprises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch
I couldn't possibly praise this book enough. I've read a lot of star wars graphic novels, and very few deliver the goods. Not so with "Darth Maul". Name something, and the book delivers. Character? Dead on. Plot? Not a slow moment. Art? Perfect.

In the world of star wars, there is a severe lack of character-driven material. Almost all the promising stories fall victim to this oversight. However, Marz gets the Maul character perfectly, the dialogue is kept to a minimum, and maul is painted as even more cold, calculating and deadly than we had any idea of. Most poor or disappointing comics rely on tired dialogue and action. Marz on the other hand, uses character, plot and visuals to drive the story, and the results are amazing. Also, the series had covers by the master himself, Drew Struzan. Most star wars books are lucky to have the poor-man's Struzan, Dave Dorman. But Maul astoundingly has managed to get the worlds greatest poster artists to paint all 4 covers.

This book successfully makes you realize how dangerous and powerful maul really was, and allows you to enjoy the end duel of The Phantom Meance much, much, more. Like just about everyone, I was disappointed by TPM - This book definitely helps. So chances are you should check it out.

This is a must-own for star wars fans. Marz stays true to the character and takes you on a wild ride.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ice cream without flavour . . . a waste of potential
This Darth Maul comic lacks the great taste it could have been had the chefs behind the scenes bothered to add even some basic flavour. Or even a title, seeing how you have to say "Darth Maul comic" to avoid confusion to the central character itself. After all, this happens just before the Shadow Hunter novel, in turn, just before The Phantom Menace movie.

And the central character in this action ride he is. Semi-attired half the time lets you see Maul's full Sith tattoos, and if he bothered to speak a bit more you'd have to add more text bubbles near him. This is when Maul receives his Infiltrator ship and his droid probes. Essentially, this is a comic that is evenly balanced: what's outstanding is eroded by its deficiencies.

And the art by Jan Duursema is outstanding. This is a comic, not a book. Comics must be as visually impressive as can be. And Jan delivers the goods, and with her recent Star Wars material showing just how better her comics are improving'in conjunction with the colouring crew, of course!'Dark Horse has struck gold with this team.

Maul hacks, wacks and slashes his way through piles of bodyguards to eliminate the Black Sun crime chiefs, which is pretty much all the storyline has to offer. But it is the little touches that save this comic. Creative tidbits like the whiney Oolth, seen in the Shadow Hunter novel; brief cameos of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan; informing the reader that Itotchi aliens, like the Jedi Master Saesee Tiin, are actually telepathic; a monocle-wearing Dug; charismatic Black Sun leader; and a wide range of aliens.

But with the choice parts of the meal eaten, the sour portions are plenty. There really is little reason for Maul not to talk. He doesn't have to make witty or sarcastic comments; he could have thought bubbles. This is one Sith whose single-minded dedication dispenses with speech unless needed, which just brings down the comic. And after such lightsaber bloodshed, you understand why Maully chooses to kill his principle target bare handed.

The opening pages are just corny and clichéd: Maul vs duelling droids. Sound familiar? Like his opening in the Shadow Hunter book? What could have saved this was a more satisfying ending. The confrontation with the Nightsister guard was faster than lightspeed. At least give readers more of a fight. Yes, he's a powerful Sith warrior, and he'll win, but make him work for it a bit!

Overall, this comic has fantastic art but too many burps to digest well. Good for a light read, but not to be taken seriously. The discrepancies within are the sort that are easily fixed, but just weren't bothered with. There are better meals out there, but this'll suffice as an entrée.

3-0 out of 5 stars Few words, lots of action and great art work.
Few words, lots of action and great art work. The is a story set shortly before Episode 1. I place it at 33 years before NH. Darth Sidious sends Maul to decapitate the leadership of Black Sun. And so that there is no one left to reveal that the sith has returned, he must wipe them out, all of them. Yes the story is short on words, but the story is pretty good for darkhorse.

It defineately passes with my ADHD son, who sat through two seasons of reading for me to go through the whole book. Sometimes, a comic does not hold his interest enough and it can take 4 or 5 sessions to do a 4 comic, 96 page TPB like this one. What that means is that the action was up to snuff for my son.

The art work here is of the new processes employed by darkhorse. One BIG complaint. I have never had a Darkhorse TPB comic just fall apart. This one did and I was careful. Check the spines and glue jobs before buying, if you can. The story gets a 3 and the art a 4, for an average of 3.5. Since it fell apart, I'm rounding down to a 3.

Does this comic add anything to our understanding of the SW galaxy? Not really. The story reinforces my thoughts about Maul, but adds no new insights.

This is a recommended addition to your collection. ... Read more
