5-0 out of 5 stars Counting with Blue
I got this book for my daughter when she was about 18 months old, and she loved it. It counts to five using easy to understand rhymes and pastel drawings of familiar animals (bunnies, kitties, butterflies, ladybugs, etc.). She asked for it every night for weeks. At the time, she had never seen a Blue's Clues episode, so her liking of the book was not due to already liking the character of Blue. ... Read more

I'm a big fan of pokemon and I really wanted to learn how to draw a Mew. This book doesn't teach you anything. They just show you a picture of Meowth and say draw it. They don't even give you the right steps. And you can only learn to draw about fifteen pokemon. Compare that to all the 386 other pokemon that people want to draw. Plus they don't show you how to draw Mew. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Over Written Under Drawn
To coincide with the '97 theatrical re-release of the original Star Wars Trilogy, Dark Horse Comics, was given the chance to publish comic book tie ins for each film. Return Of The Jedi is basically a reprint of the 1983 version that is now out of print.

THE STORY: Adapted By Archie Goodwin, the "script" follows the feature film pretty well, but I could have used less description of the action. Comic books can get too bogged down if overwritten, such is the case here. I wish Goodwin, who knows how to write for the popular space saga, showed restraint. Comic books are as much a visual medium and should reflect that. Another problem is the fact that none of the "new" material from the special edition made it into this book, like the extended ending.

THE ART: The team of Al Williamson and Carlos Garson art is lacking in some respects. Their work seems very uneven. At times its quite good (the rendering of Boba Fett) and at others, (the climactic battle/duel) the shadings are at bit too dark for my tastes. The human characters hardly match their cinema counterparts. This is particularly true of the non-close up panels.

As nice as it is to see trilogy production sketches, it would have been better if those pages were used to enhance the adaptation instead. The book has 109 pages. The Special Edition version of the Jedi adaptation is a disappointing three star effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fantasy Book
Wonderful wonderful book. Exciting, terrifying and haunting at the same time. The final battle for the empire proves to be positive for the rebels, who pull together at the last minute and fight for all they're worth!

"I can't be...just a person,
I can't be helpless like that...."
-- Buffy, "Helpless"

At eighteen, each Slayer must face a terrifying trial: the Tento di Cruciamentum. This time-honored, albeit cruel, rite of passage forces each Watcher to drain the Slayer of all her physical powers and then send her to vanquish a powerful vampire using only her wits. When Buffy Summers underwent her Cruciamentum, she managed to defeat Kralik, a vampire who had been committed to a sanitarium as a human for torturing and murdering more than a dozen young women before he was turned. However, not all Slayers have been so cunning.

Tales of the Slayer, Vol. 4 chronicles the Cruciamentum of eight earlier Slayers. From Prohibition Chicago to beatnik New York City, from the sideshows of a traveling carnival to a small Irish farm, from the fifteenth century to the twentieth, the Cruciamentum has tested the prowess of Slayers throughout history. Each of them has had to fight: for her job, for the lives of those she loved, and for her own existence.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of tales.
This is a nice addition to your nursery or reading room. The book contains many of the classic Disney tales wonderfully adapted for easy reading.

The book is well bound and of good quality. What I really like
is that it matches the other Disney books in size and style and so looks nice on the shelf.

Each story is accompanied by wonderful illustrations, and the stories have been beautifully shortened to make for perfect reading length to keep your youngsters attention.

Over all this is a great book, and will make a wonderful addition to your nursery.

I thought that Walt Disney's "Snow white and the seven dwarfs" was a great book for children
everywhere. Its the classic story of Snow White coming and staying with the seven adorable dwarfs, who all have
great personalities of their own. I think that children would love to read this book over and over again. Its
definitely a book that children will remember for a very long time. The thing about this book that makes it so great
is the magnificent ending. So I recommend this book to children, and maybe even adults, because its just one of
them books that makes you smile when you read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snow White
I think the person who said this book makes dwarfs look lazy, needs to re-read this book. It shows how much they loved Snow White and cared about her. Too many of you so called goody two shoes needs to really sit and think how wonderful Mr. Disney's books are. Those dwarfs cared about snow white showed that it was ok for a man to cry and be sensative. Some of the woman now a days need to realized that woman do cook and clean and men still do go out to work. As a single parent of three grown children, who worked and reared my children by myself, I read all the Disney books to my children and I am now reading to my grandchildren. Wake up America, Power Rangers are dangerous to our Children not Snow White. This generation now needs more stories like Snow White to show how sensative even Little People can be. Get your heads out of the ground. We all need to learn how to love one another and how to be sensative once again in this cruel world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT STORY
I LOVE THIS BOOK IM NOT A LITTLE GIRL ANYMORE BUT I STILL ENJOY READING THIS STORY IF YOU HAVE LITTLE KIDS YOU SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK IM SURE THEY'LL LOVE IT

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story
I thought that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a great book for kids. Its one of those books that kids love and read over and over again. The story teaches kids not to take food or anything from strangers even the least expected person. The story takes place in castle but when the queen orders Snow White to be killed she runs away into the forest. But, when the queen finds out she changes her identity and goes after her. Join Snow White in this dangerous and fun filled adventure as she discovers the beauty of the forest. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A blast of a read
Buckle your belts, hold on to your hide, Rite of Passage is a blast. The team that gave you Twilight and Darkness are back, just as good, and showing why Dark Horse comics have never been better.

The quality of art is what you've come to expect from the Duursema-Kryssing team: fanciful illustrations, vibrant colours, you won't be disappointed. With Aayla looking like a bundle of cuteness in the opening scenes, and Villie back to grinning again, even if his page time was less than prior comics, it's back to old times.

Dialogue varies between the cast, though the Morgukai syntax limits creativity with their short sentences. Even the Jedi get some good lines, and for once aren't the usual wimps they seem to be. The Morgukai want Vos and Secura dead, they'll have to work for it. Which, of course, just gives room for some good snappy one-liners.

What is it with comics, that full names must be mentioned almost each time? Readers know who Quinlin Vos and Aayla Secura are; what need is there for characters to address each other with both names? Crimson Empire, the TOTJ and Ongoing series, they all did this.

There's nothing extravagant about the plot. The comic introduces Nat Secura, the young Twi'lek fans will remember Bib Fortuna making a fuss over in Tales from Jabba's Palace. His abduction has Vos and Secura in hot pursuit, and a father-son duo of Morgukai hunters not far behind. A race against time to avert interclan war, with the life of their master hanging in the balance as well. One will ascend to Jedi Master, the other to Knight, and the fun begins.

The only issue of contention was how the Morgukai son survived to appear later, as readers last saw him stranded in the middle of a lava flow. How he could possibly get out of that could easily have been clarified with a line or two, and not spoil anything. Meant to surprise the reader, it taxed credulity, compounded again in the last pages.

Overall, Rite of Passage is another great comic by the talented team you know can deliver the goods and more. And with character development continuing to evolve in new directions, avid fans are sure to follow them as the new stories come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!
This was the ultimate perfect ending! I'm so sad that the series is done, but it couldn't have gotten any better! The situations between both max and Liz and Michael and Maria get so intense, I almost cried! It is honestly the best book i have ever read! But i don't want to give anything away! So...enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A TOTAL MUST FOR THE ULTIMATE FAN
I just finished reading Salvation. It was the best of the entire series. I've never cried through any of them, except for this one. So many critical and tragic things happened to Max, Micheal, Isabel, Liz, Maria and Alex. The writing was much more fast paced and the plot was much bigger and more important. Our favorite characters lose almost everything and endure so much pain, but ultimately they realize what they've always known. That is, they have eachother. The bonds the six of them share prove to be stronger and more meaningful than any Intergalactic turmoil they've faced. You must read this book! I admit that once you get close to the end you grow sad because it's over, but savor the writing. This is the crowning book to the Roswell High series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coming Together To The End
Melinda Metz is a fantastic author. I loved her other Roswell books but this is, by far, the best one yet. I was jumping out of my seet from the first page. I love how Melinda ended the book, it was very twisty and tourney and almost made me cry. When I was done with the book I felt good to know what happens but I also felt sad to know that this was the end of Roswell. It's so depressing realizing somethings going to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael and Maria Sitch
OK, this book, in my opinion was the best at the end for romantic reasons. Michael and Maria both had a thing for the other, but, yes, Michael is a little dense, and once he fooled around with this evil Cameron (as you can probably tell, I hate her). Finally though, Michael and Maria admitted feelings, and it was so sweet! (I'm Michael-Maria crazy). The bad thing is that Alex and Isabel practically said (yes, they did) they only wanted to be friends, which totally sucks. Another thing: Max and Liz have always been totally corny in the books, but this time, they crossed the line. They act all lovey-dovey even after Liz's problems with Adam. If you ask me, they're too perfect a couple to be real. All in all, though, this book really came through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect End To a Perfect Series
I loved this one, it's my favorite out of the whole series. It was an excelent balance of tying up loose ends and leaving a promise of the future. I was not disapointed with this ending. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good roswell book
when a new chemial company comes to town, they offer a scholarship and a summer job to one lucky applicant. liz parker
wins. but from the beginning she senses that things are not quite
right here. the scientist she is assigned to work with is down right rude and nasty to her. little does she know that they are covering up a bigger plot that will cause a townwide disease that causes the whole town to be quarantined.

as a subplot a little girl starts following maria around town. upon further investigation she finds out that the girl is her half sister. this brings up a bunch of complicated issues that maria thought long buried with her father who left her so many years ago.

the story has a good plot but i think the writer missed the best
parts of the michael and maria relationship. the writer has them
getting along a little too well. when did that ever happen on the show? the plot does come to a peak about 12 pages from the end and hurries with a solution. i did not like that part too much. it reminded me of the last4 episodes of roswell when they hurried up and tied up loose ends instead of drawing them out into a better story.

overall it is a good book and i think roswell fans will enjoy it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An improvement over the first arc
Dreamwave's second Transformers First Generation miniseries is not so much a sequel to the first miniseries as it is a pilot for their First Gen ongoing. The X-Files-ian approach to the TF saga is continued, but this time we have a new writer who has a better handle on the characters and has taken them back to their roots. Although, as with the modern Star Trek series, there are still many things that will likely upset the stomach of the old school purists.

The story starts out with Optimus Prime leading the Autobots into battle against Megatron and his Decepticons, over the possession of what looks to be either a probe or message pod, from their home planet of Cybertron. The fighting is interrupted by the arrival of Decepticon's resident Brainiac, Shockwave. Shockwave has taken control of Cyberton and turned it into a utopia where Autobots and Decepticons live in peace. He gives an ultimatum to the Earthbound TFs, join him or die. Everyone's favorite backstabber Starscream sees the situation as an opportunity to eliminate Megatron(without checking to see if he's really dead) while on the Autobot front, Prime is disheartend to learn that his former protege, Ultra Magnus, is a staunch supporter of Shockwave's new order. When Prime becomes a fugitive, Magnus has a crisis of conscience.

The main strength of the story is how the original characters intermingle with the post-Movie characters. In both the show and the Marvel series, older characters were generally written out to make way for newer characters. Another plus is fusion, writer Brad Mick has taken the fan favorite characterizations of the show, the more mature sci-fi oriented approach of British comic, even the amped-up violence and fatalistic heroism of the Japanese cartoon, and blended them all together. A gripe might be that there is quite a bit of "George Lucas dialogue" in the mix(Star Wars fans will know what I'm talking about), but that can be attributed to the writer still being a little green around the gills. But otherwise, the story is a little bit more tightly plotted this time, because not everything has to be wrapped up in a little pink bow by the end. Even the unintiated will quickly figure out that Shockwave is really up to no good, but were left with a compelling mystery anyway. The story ultimatly DOES stand on it's own, but some plot threads(e.g. Megatron's revenge, Starscream's real agenda) are going to wait until Vol. 3. If you're a fan of TF or even anime/Sci-Tech then this is one to check out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Just as Good as the Movie!
I have fond memories of when I was a little girl in the 70's watching the Red Balloon movie, a teacher had shown us the movie in school on an old projector and I had also seen the movie on TV so one day when I was in the childrens section of the public library I saw this book and I just knew I had to check it out of the library and read it and I'm glad I did because it was a wonderful book and had great pictures from the movie and both movie and book show wonderful scenes around Paris as the young French boy follows a red balloon around Paris and I very highly recommend the book and the movie and I liked the book so much I borrowed it from the library several times and I'm now thinking of buying it!

3-0 out of 5 stars This Edition Is A Stage Adaptation!
It's somewhat misleading to post reviews of the original Lamorisse version of "The Red Balloon" on this page, because this book is a stage adaptation of Lamorisse's work (i.e., the 1956 Academy Award Winning Short Film, and several other editions of the book).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Favorite
This book was a childhood favorite of mine in the mid 1960s--introduced to me by my mother, a teacher of French language. It's a bittersweet tale --but ultimately it's an affirming book. I loved it so much as a child that I have always remembered it--and now plan to introduce it to my children. The photographs are beautiful and charming. My love of this book probably explains why I always feel happy when I see a big red balloon. A gem and a classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars mutli-generational delight
When I was a little boy, this story brought me incredible delight over and over again. When I saw this film as a young man in my 20's, it brought me delight again, letting me relive my childhood all over. As an adult, I just introduced the book and the film to my 2 year old daughter, and once again this classic story has brought me delight. My daughter, who is usually only interested in Elmo and Barney, stood riveted through both the pages of the book and the scenes of the film, as Pascal and his balloon let her imagination soar. 3-0 out of 5 stars Jedi hero Ulic Qel-Droma is tempted by the dark side
This Comic can be found listed 3 ways. I am reviewing the first of the 3 that is called: Tales of the Jedi - The Sith War written by Kevin J Anderson and published July, 1996 with ISBN 1569711739. This is a dark Horse TPB comic covering issues 1 through 6 of STAR WARS: TALES OF THE JEDI - THE SITH WAR.

Other editions with the same title and cover art are: Titan ISBN 1840231300 published April, 2000 and

TALES OF THE JEDI 3 - THE SITH WAR published by McMillan march, 1997 under ASIN: 075220369X.

I have assigned the timeline year of -3996 before NH to this comic. As did Exar Kun before him and Luke Skywalker 4,000 years later, Jedi hero Ulic Qel-Droma is tempted by the dark side following the murder of master Arca. Before there was Darth Vader, Dark lord of the Sith, there was Ulic Qel-Droma, Dark lord of the Sith.

This comic was written by KJA who has contributed much of the Old Republic Comics. He also did The JEDI ACADEMY trilogy, one of my favorites. Since Kevin also did the SW Essential Chronology we find few continuity problems here. The art and coloring is a in the old style, cartoon strip style, but some of the drawings and dramatic and inspired. Given what Dark horse is turning out now I grade the art a solid "C" grade, though some pages are stunningly awesome.

The action is tremendous. The story is a little hard to follow. Ulic is in the Empress Teta system (not on the galaxy maps produced in the NJO). Ulic is seduced by the Dark side and by Aleema. At about 150 pages long, the story twists and turns and is generally as unpredictable as an episode of LAW AND ORDER.

Made in Canada, the binding is holding up very well. Some of the new TPB's that are now made in China had awful bindings, where the comic can fall apart in your hands, even when you are being careful.

If you have started reading these Old Republic comic and liked them, you'll like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a climax!
This was absolutely wonderful. I've had the book for 2 years and I revisit it's ever-grasping folds all the time. It's terrific that the Jedi actually have a challenge in Exar Kun and Qel-Droma. Before I've always felt that Luke will kill Vader, Boba fett will fail, and the Jedi will always come out on top. NOT HERE! There are times throughout this series (such as Exar Kun's slaughter of the Jedi Masters) when things seem almost hopeless for the Jedi. If you are an avid Star Wars fan who thirsts for more knowledge about the fearless race of warriors who deffended the galaxy for eons, then Tales Of The Jedi is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping tale of ancient Jedi lore
Lucas Books latched on to a brilliant concept for telling the stories from ancient Jedi lore. Instead of telling these stories in book form, which could be a bit much in terms of asking the fan base to learn and empathize with new characters, they contracted with Dark Horse Comics to tell these stories in graphic novel format. The series was called "Tales of the Jedi". "The Sith War" was the first of these graphic novels that I read and it is also one of most compelling, involved, and relevant tales of the old Jedi order. The time of the events in this story takes place some 4000 years before the original trilogy and the events and characters involved will have an impact in the modern Star Wars universe.

"The Sith War" focuses on the evil machinations of a corrupt Jedi named Exar Kun (who will play a major role in the "Jedi Academy Trilogy" books) who has become poisoned by the seductive dark side power of the Sith. Kun used his influence to corrupt a number of good Jedi with this power. One of these Jedi, named Ulic Qel-Droma, was so perverted by Kun's influence that he turned on his family, friends, and the entire Republic and was responsible for actions that thrust the galaxy into a devastating war. Qel-Droma is not an evil man, just a vulnerable man corrupted by the pure evil of Exar Kun. He comes to realize, to his horror, the consequences of his actions and tries to fight back at against Kun at great consequence to himself.

"The Sith War" provides a continuation of earlier "Tales of the Jedi" stories and answers many questions that readers may have from reading the current Star Wars novels. "The Sith War" is notable for showing the culmination of this bloody conflict, while also explaining what happened to Exar Kun. In addition, the warrior who was the inspiration for Boba Fett and the armor he wore is introduced here. A brilliant military strategist named Mandalore (the inspiration of Fett's Mandalorian Armor) allied himself with Kun and Qel-Droma in this war and fought valiantly. This graphic novel is one that the reader will go back to time and time again to read about the events of that war and to try and pick up on additional details they may have missed the first time around. It is definitely worth getting.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit lackluster
First things first:

There are Sith, technically. Just not a lot. The war itself is mostly fought by the Tetans. In any case, there is also a war. but it, too, is small. How it almost collapsed the Republic I don't know. A large-scale war is the Galactic Civil War. You know, the one it took 3 movies and dozens of books to tell? That's a big fundamental flaw here, too. It's an attempt to tell a whole war in one comic book. Thus, the war seems a bit more like a collection of skirmishes and mishaps than an actual large-scale conflict.

Now onto the book. The art seems a bit off, unfortunately, and the story is jerking back and forth. Alas, it never really establishes a constructive rythm and just darts back and froth between this and that. A few good scenes, but they're somewhat self-contained and are forced to create a rythm of their own.

Buy it if you so choose, most likely to conclude the Tales of the Jedi series. I can't say I reccomend it, however.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Lousy
I gave this two stars because it is the logical conclusion to Veitch's TotJ series.

The problems with this book are almost uncountable. The art is ... bad. Did we really need to see that much saliva? Why did the fruit that Aleema eats in the previous volume suddenly become a slightly-different looking serpent that strangles people? Why did the symbols on the foreheads of the Sith Lords change?

And the writing. What was the point of Mandalore stealing the MX Cannon? Did he ever use it? Did KJA even bother review his Jedi Academy Trilogy before scripting this? JAT says that the Old Republic rained laser fire down on Yavin IV. I won't give away the ending to this book, but that doesn't happen. JAT also describes the Massassi differently, but oh well. And speaking of the Massassi -- did both KJA and the artist completely forget about Bionic Massassi Priest Zythmnr from the previous volume? I was looking forward to alchemically enhanced Massassi kicking .., but they're mostly big growling heavies that follow Kun around waving his standard.

I was about to give another star for Ood Bnar's appearance, but then I remembered that the artist drew Ood's lightsabers all wrong. Oh well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting! Awesome!
This was really a GREAT book. I my oppinion it was the best of all the Jedi Quest books. The plot was interesting and the characters were - well, they were the usual Star Wars people! The writing was good and definitely deserves a five-star rating. This is a fun read for anyone who likes Star Wars or the Jedi Quest/Jedi Apprentice series.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY well done
A Senator's son, Gillam, disappeared from the elite Leadership School on Andara. The Jedi High Council sent two padawans undercover.

Anakin Skywalker would pose as one there by scholarship. Ferus Olin (Anakin's rival) would pose as the son of someone important. The teens' mission had two parts. The first and most important part was to locate and rescue Gillam. The second part was to learn about a renegade squad of young mercenaries that used the school as a training ground.

***** Brava, Jude Watson! This, in my opinion, is the best of the J.Q. series thus far. Readers get to see another glimpse or two into Anakin's potential. The story is well written and the characters' traits are flawless! Highly recommended! *****

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting short novel about Anakin's apprenticeship
This is a short novel that takes place between the time of the Star Wars' movies Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Anakin Skywalker has been discovered by the Jedis and is now the Padawan of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he is still young and impatient with the ways of the Jedi.

While the main action revolves around Anakin and his rival Ferus being placed undercover in an elite school to find the whereabouts of a kidnapped student, more important is the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Each one makes mistakes and decisions that we know ultimately lead to Anakin's turning to the dark side. The author does a good job of laying the foundation for that later decision.

The main story is a bit light. The characters Anakin and Ferus and Obi-Wan interact with are interesting and written well, but the plot is rather transparent and not terribly interesting. The vocabulary and grammar are appropriate for the age group, though not challenging, and the action and characters should thrill young fans. I'd recommend this book for its target audience -- young Star Wars devotees who are beginning to read longer books -- but there is probably not much here to interest an adult or older reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!
Very rarely have I seen a series get consistently better with each new volume the way this one does. And I thought we'd reached the peak three books ago! Though the error seems to be mostly fixed now, just for the record, this review is for Jedi Quest # 5, The School of Fear.

Two years have passed since the last book, and Anakin, now sixteen, has been entrusted with the mission of infiltrating a highly exclusive school along with his chief rival Ferus, in an attempt to discover the whereabouts of a young boy who has vanished. Things quickly go awry for the two padawans, as complications arise, as well as conflict within their own strained relationship.

As I said before, this is the best one yet, with a complex though not overwhelming plot that kept me guessing till the end; as well as myriads of character development for Anakin and Obi-Wan both. As another reviewer points out, it's easy to see all the small mistakes Obi-Wan makes with Anakin, all the ways that things could have gone differently, and how easy it would have been to make it so!

Do yourself a huge favor, and read this entire series. Don't be deterred by its kiddy exterior, the stories are full of depth and exceed many of the adult novels hugely. The only gripe I have about it is that it was WAY TOO SHORT!! But I imagine that will be remedied as soon as I have book 6...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Another story of Anakin and Obi Wan drifting apart and together and apart again. Another story of Anakin enraged at Ferus Olin. I think Anakin really trusted the club.I can't beleive that Anakin hates Ferus enough to let him disapear and not go look for him. I like Obi Wan, but he's too serious and is over critical.I like when he jokes. I loved the part where Obi Wan and Siri had to act like thy were married. I also loved it when the teacher sat on the custard turnover and she blames Ferus. I would recomend this book to any young Star Wars lover. ... Read more
