5-0 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better and better!
Before this series I had read just about all the kiddy Star Wars books, and I was just about to move on to the adult ones when I came across these. At first I decided to ignore them, since Episode 1 is pretty far down on my list of favorite Star Wars movies, but I decided to give them a try anyway. Boy, am I glad that I did! They are truly awesome, far better than I could have even imagined! Though they are geared toward younger readers than myself (I'm 15) the tone is not at all condesending, and the writing and discriptions are excellent. The characters themselves seem to come alive and the story is very real and intense and even heartbreaking at times. The author crafts each character with care and expertise, and this series brings out far more in Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon than Episode 1 did, and it also gives us new insights as to what exactly Obi-Wan went through to become Qui-Gon's Padawan, and how truly heartbreaking it must have been for him when Qui-Gon is killed at the end of Episode 1. Anyway, for a brief summery, Obi-Wan, having left the Jedi to fight for peace on Melida/Daan, begins to develop a very close knit relationship with the two young leaders of the revolt, Cerasi and Nield. As they struggle to form a new government, Qui-Gon and his friend Tahl, back on Coruscant, are working to discover who might be the culprit of strange thefts that have been happening at the Jedi Temple. This book in particular is very sad and intense, as Obi-Wan sruggles with the fact that though he would like the Jedi to take him back, he knows how deeply he hurt Qui-Gon and that HE will never take him back. And we can see how Qui-Gon is struggling in turn to keep his mind on the problems at the Temple, though he truly feels bad for Obi-Wan when tragedy strikes. I thought in particular that Qui-Gon was portrayed wonderfully, since this book made him seem like an ordinary person on the inside, dispite the fact that he is a Jedi Master. Tahl is also an awesome character, and I truly wish we could have seen some of her before she was blinded so we could see what a great warrior she was. Well, I have no doubt that she can overcome this handicap and go on with life, much as Tenel Ka did after the loss of her arm in Young Jedi Knights, if anyone else has read those. Anyway, I would recommend this series to any Star Wars fan, especially those interested in finding out what happened before Episode 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book!
When I read this book I just could not stop, only when I had to shovel the drive way. I read this book one snow day and I just fell in love with it. And when the temple theif witch I can't wait to find who's behind this robbery. I also got a couple of laughs from this book, and how Qui-gon Jinn said he would not take Obi-wan as his Apprentice, Oboy is he wrong! I was sad when and shocked when Obi-wan's friend dies that red hair girl. I can't wait till Jedi Apprentice #7 comes out and what happens to Yoda in the next book? Well keep them coming Waston! P.s. If anyone wanted to know when Star Wars The Phantom Menace comes out the date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncertain, You Are
Jude Watson brings to life the choices we face everyday. It shows how Obi-Wan Kenobi had to mkae one deceision between his home and when his friends on Melida/Daan needed him most.
When his friend is murdered and all his other friends, except two who remain loyal to him, turn into his enemies. He has no where to go and his former Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn isn't availible to protecthim, Obi-Wan must learn to be on his own with no one to help him.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Let-down from Defenders of the Dead
Overall, I've greatly enjoyed the Jedi Apprentice series. It's not Harry Potter, but it gets the job done. Defenders of the Dead was a highlight, with an ending that left this jaded, cynical adult gasping with shock.

Unfortunately, The Uncertain Path leads to too much boredom. Obi-Wan mopes and Qui-Gon sulks, while the Youth on Melida/Daan regress into the children that they are. A few things salvage the book. Yoda giving Qui-Gon a chewing out (sorry, "Yoda a chewing out giving Qui-Gon, hmmmm?"), a touching scene with Cerasi's father, and the lack of quick resolution to the Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon conflict. Hope remains high for book 7.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obi-Wan faces an 'uncertain path'.
The bloody civil war on the planet of Melida/Daan has ended with the Young the victors. Obi-Wan has left the Jedi order to stay with his friends Cerasi, Nield, and the rest of the Young to govern the planet. But instead of having peace after so much war, the Young is starting to break up. Everyone is fighting each other, dividing friends. Taking up the chance, the Elders of Melida and Daan begin to protest. Qui-Gon himself is having many problems. After returning Tahl back to the Temple, he still feels betrayed by Obi-Wan for abandoning him. He finds it hard to forgive Obi-Wan for hurting him, can he ever be able to forgive him? Then he discovers that a series of thefts have begun in the Temple. Could it be one of the Jedi students, or someone outside the Temple? Then Qui-Gon gets the shock of his life, Obi-Wan calls for help! Will Qui-Gon go back to his former apprentice to help?

A continuation from the previous book, "The Defenders of the Dead", the story really explores the characters of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan has left the Jedi order willingly, yet he begins to have doubts about his choice. Will he ever be one with the Force again? And will he ever get Qui-Gon back as his Master? Qui-Gon is also hurt and betrayed, finding it hard to forgive Obi-Wan. Together they must search their hearts to find out what is the correct path for them. A good ending though you'll probably be in suspense for what is going to happen next in "The Captive Temple". Jude Watson has certainly done an astounding job, the plot and story of the book is so unique and interesting and I couldn't put it down! I still enjoy reading the books as much as I did when they first started coming out in the summer of 1999.

This series explains a lot about how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan first meet. Their beginning is far from simple and all smooth-sailings, which would be pretty monotonous if it was. Though the books are said for ages 9-12, like many other reviewers I agree that the Jedi Apprentice Series are for anybody. Extremely well-written, the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the main characters are very well put down into words. I also like the different array of humans and aliens which are portrayed, both good and bad; young Cerasi who has seen so much pain, Nield who strongly believes in the "Young's" cause, Tahl who though is almost dying has a strong will to live, and more.

The first Jedi Apprentice book is written by Dave Wolverton while all the rest (19 more books) are written by Jude Watson and are all very highly recommended from me. The books don't really 'end' at all, the books ends in either a cliffhanger or with a little glimpse into the future. Believe me, once you start reading them, you'll want to read the next one... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great...if your kids love Rescue Heroes
This book is great if your kids are already into the Rescue Heroes. My 4 year-old wanted to know every detail about each of the Heroes and found it very entertaining. Considering its only 4 Bucks, it was money well spent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very bare bones
My three-year old loves the Rescue Heroes, but this book really didn't capture him. The writing is pretty bad--almost as if the writers underestimate the comprehension abilities of small children. The stories are very short and very cliche. The illustrations are just what you would expect from the Rescue Heroes line. It would be better if they started a series of books about the Rescue Heroes, and dedicate one book of this length to each character. I'm not impressed with this effort. We definitely would like to see more books about the Rescue Heroes.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 year old loves it
My son has been nuts about the Rescue Heroes for quite some time now. This book is nice because it tells what motivated each character to become a Rescue Hero. It has really brought the characters to life for our family. I also think it is a nice lesson in how what happens to you today can shape who you become tomorrow. My son loves the book and uses it to keep track of what heroes he has and those he wishes to have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but it is Rescue Heroes
It is difficult to find any products related to Rescue Heroes aside from the toys. The other books I found on Amazon seemed a little elementary, and some have moving parts that are bound to get broken. This book is not the highest quality I've ever seen, but my four-year-old son enjoys it. Each page shows a picture of a Rescue Hero and tells a story from that Rescue Hero's childhood that made him or her want to become a Rescue Hero. The illustrations look more like still shots from the cartoon, and the quality of the writing isn't outstanding, but if your child likes Rescue Heroes he or she will probably love it. My son asked me to read it about 5 or 6 times the day it arrived. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is A Wonderful Book!
Captive Temple is a great book for all Star Wars fans toread. Obi-Wan Kenobi is no longer Padawan of Qui-Gon, but fate bringsthem together when the Jedi Temple is threatened. They have to work together to find and destroy the criminal that is in charge of all the threats. This book is just as great as all the other books in the series. There is one part of killing, but the rest is fine. Although the age range is 9-12, this book is a good read for people of all ages. This is definitely a good book for Star Wars fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell the book by it's cover!!!
This book is perfect! It's got a great cover, but the inside (though a little short) is great! Xanatoes is back (good luck Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon) and he wants revenge on the Temple, his old master, and for good mesure a boy who happens to mean a lot to Qui-Gon! (guess who?) Also he has another motive, but what is it? They must stop him, but they need a little help. Soooo enter Tahl and Bant, along with Garren Muln. Together they need to save the Captive Temple! Unfotunatly, because of bad experiences on Melida/Daan Obi-Wan has left the Jedi, and they have not taken him back, but even if they do take him back...will Qui-Gon? Maybe...but in the mean time there is a big PROBLEM, Obi-Wan feels jelous and angry and start suspecting his best friend Bant of trying to get Qui-Gon for a master...Now there is conflict EVERYWERE!!! Plleeeease read this book, you won't be disappointed! To those who have read it, I like the bit about Obi-Wan 'Leaving boots very hard to fill'! "Don't worry Garren, you'll grow!" :) -Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jude Watson does it again!
Its definetly the best in the series, and I would have preferred it to end here. The ending seemed as though it was FORCED to hint about the sequal. I have a feeling that Jude Watson didnt want to continue writing it, and then had to. Its a great book, to bad about the ending....

4-0 out of 5 stars Return to the Fantastic
I keep thinking to myself that Jude Watson is no J.K. Rowling, but now I'm beginning to think that I'm deluding myself. The Captive Temple is, as we've come to expect from Watson, a fantastic read. Most remarkable of all is the way Watson is able to depict Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, twelve years before The Phantom Menace. What is masterful is that these both are and are not the characters we saw in the movie; they appear exactly as they must have been in their younger days. Remarkable.

The Captive Temple is also an improvement over the previous book. Obi-Wan is less mopey ("Mopey-Wan" . . . hmmm), and Qui-Gon less brooding. There are no quick fixes to their relationship, broken by Obi-Wan's betrayal of Qui-Gon in book 5, which is satisfyingly frustrating. Watson seems to have masterly paced the evolution of our Jedi heroes' relationship, giving us just enough development to keep us coming back for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars On of the best books, "The Captive Temple"!
Obi-Wan Kenobi has decided to return to the Temple after staying on Melida/Daan. But once he arrives at the Jedi Temple with his former Master Qui-Gon, he realizes that things might not go as well as he thought. The Jedi Council is harsh with him and Qui-Gon seems to ignore him. Can he ever regain the trust he had with the Council and Qui-Gon? Also, there's a threat within the Temple. Everyone is being under suspicion, everyone is in danger, and everyone is wary of others. Who could be behind these attacks? As Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan try to solve the mystery, they discover that the attacker might be someone they know, someone they've already encountered...

In this story Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationships is being slowly healed though I must stress on the 'slow' part. I can't wait till their problems are resolved and they become the perfect team they become to be in Episode 1. Jude Watson has certainly done an astounding job, the plot and story of the book is so unique and interesting and I couldn't put it down!

I also like the different array of humans and aliens which are portrayed, both good and bad; Obi-Wan's friend Bant with her wise ways, Tahl with her many disadvantages of being blind and many more advantages with having the Force, and TooJay, Tahl's annoying navigational droid.

The first Jedi Apprentice book is written by Dave Wolverton while all the rest (19 more books) are written by Jude Watson and are all very highly recommended from me. The books don't really 'end' at all, the books ends in either a cliffhanger or with a little glimpse into the future. Believe me, once you start reading them, you'll want to read the next one... then the next one... I can't wait for Jude Watson's next Star Wars series, The Jedi Quest Series with Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Jedi Master and Anakin Skywalker as the Padawan Apprentice.

Another Star Wars Series I recommend and like a lot are the Young Jedi Knights series. The stories are about Jacen and Jaina Solo (twins of Han and Leia Solo), and their friends as they journey on the road to becoming Jedi Knights. More on the teenager level of reading. For adult readings, a few selections I enjoy reading are "The Thrawn Trilogy", "Rogue Planet", "The Jedi Academy Trilogy", "The Corellian Trilogy", and "The Truce at Bakura". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good way to start a good series
I loved this book when i started it, i had to read it all in one day. I bought the first three, and I'm glad i did; I just got on spring break (YES!) so i can finish all of them, and maybe get some more. I was a fan of Charmed for a while before I heard about the books. I've never seen the first one(of course, one of the good ones:( )So i baught it and i'm very glad that i did! It starts off telling you about how Phoebe is living in new york and her sisters are living in their grandmother's house. Piper later, invites Phoebe(without prue knowing) to live in thier guest bedroom. Earlier, prue found a wedjei(?) board and phoebe uses it and it spells out ATTIC. In the night phoebe decides to go in there alone and finds the Book of shadows and gets a visit from one of their ancestors and she tells them that they're not only witches, but the Charmed ones, the most powerful witches. Melinda(thier ancestor) tells them that a warlock will come to try to get their powers. Now, Phoebe can see the future, Piper can freeze time, and Prue can move things with a wave of her hand. BUT WHO'S THE WORLOCK?! An old friend of prue's, Andy, suddenly comes back just when they get their powers, but phoebe had doubts over piper's boy frind, Jeremey. The ending was very exciting, and MAKES you finish it becuase it's sooo good.Very good begining, if you are starting to read the books, read this one 1st!

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of three will set them free.
This book was a real good read! Three sisters discover they have magical powers, one can freeze time, another can see the future and one can move things with her mind. However they aren't just any witchies, they are the charmed ones the most powerful of all witchies! Their magic comes with a cost though, a warlock wants their powers and he'll get them even if it kills them. The plot was understanable and enjoyable, the charcters are very real even just in a book. This book shows you alot more about the characters then the TV show. I reccomend it to all Charmed fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars good kick start
this is the first book in the series althogugh it mirrors the first episode completly. it introduces all the main characters well setting the scene well for how the sisters will cope with their new found witchiness. even if your not really into charmed but you do like wicca this is a great book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good read!
I usually don't like novelizations of episodes of TV shows or movies, but this was really well written. I purchased this because "Something Wicca This Way Comes", the episode the book is based on, is one my favorite Charmed episodes and I wanted to see for myself if this book would be any good. It was exactly as I remembered the pilot episode and I found myself picturing the scenes vividly as I read. The characterization was very well done and the author captured Prue, Piper and Phoebe's personalities very well with the inner thoughts. Great book for anyone who enjoys the TV show.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
I didn't see the first show in the television series so I can't compare the book to the show. This is the first in the series of Charmed Books though so in a way... it's a fresh start. This was a good introduction to Prue, Phoebe & Piper and how they come into being the CHARMED ONES. The book read well and held my attention... not a long book to read either. I think this series is going to be very exciting and I look forward to reading more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT
I heard the audio cassete version of this story by checking it out of the library. My mom, not even really a great fan of Star Wars, listened to it with me and we finished it the same day. I am now listening to it again. The actors do a wonderful job and as always the music and soiund effects make it sound like the battle is in your own room. This is the best! Great to see Wedge Antilles at the end. Mirith Sinn is the most idiotic character I have ever seen. How many times did Ki Kanos warn her that they were not allies? Not enough I guess. Still one of the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good story . . . if you like the Crimson Guard
While this story was not a complete loss, both the story line and the art were unremarkable. The story was definitely not a major event in the Star Wars universe, and it will probably not be one of the talked about story lines in the years to come. Overall it is just below average for a Star Wars tale. ALTHOUGH, if you are a fan of the Crimson Guard, this book is very enjoyable, and worth the money. The reader gets to see inside their training, and learns of their fate after the Dark Empire story line. Add to that several great action sequences of the Guard, and you have a great story for any lover of the Crimson Guard. (I am a fan of the Crimson Guard, hence the 4 stars.)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
Having read a lot of Star Wars Graphic Novels, I can safely say this is one of the best if not the best. Crimson Empire delivers the goods. Period. There's a reason almost all the reviews here are 5 stars: this story is unique, captures the essence of SW and takes you on a ride that is as enjoyable as the original films. BOLD. NEW. EXCITING. Read Crimson Empire.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must purchase this comic series.
...I'm glad someone decided to give these Royal Guardsman their fame by publishing this comic series. The drwings are great. And tt gives you in depth perspective on how these guardsman train and use their force pikes. And how they train and are also force users.
It shows how these guardsman (former elite storm troopers) show up to the training facilities, and their strive to become the beat guardsman. And the cost of that is having to ultimately killing another top contender which was one of your own fellow trainees you trained with.
That's totally compelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best of the comics
Wow. This is truly an original piece of work. With the exception of "Tales of the Jedi" series(s), this is my favorite Star Wars graphic novel. The story itself is told so skillfully, engrossing you in a world filled with characters, that you forget that they were not in the Star Wars movies (with the exception of Wedge.) The art is the best of ANY SW comic, including the drab and dull Dark Empire. It is a shame that the sequel did live up to this piece of work. ... Read more

Visions of Danger

When Liz, Max, Maria, Michael, and Kyle left Roswell, they didn't think their lives would suddenly become perfect. They were, after all, on the run from the FBI. But they certainly didn't think things could get much worse. They're learning how wrong they were. The FBI has tracked them via their e-mail accounts and is hot on the group's trail. It can only be a matter of time before they are apprehended.

Meanwhile, in New York City, three alien Dupes are captured by the police. When the feds are brought on to the case, the Special Unit recognizes the Dupes -- and wonders why "Tess," "Michael," and "Isabel" have changed so much since their last encounter. Little does the Unit know it is dealing with a case of mistaken identity. And the real Isabel has more pressing concerns, if Liz's latest vision is to be believed.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars quite an interesting book
this book finds our 6 heros on the run from the law after the attempted assasination on their graduation day. it seems to pack a lot in for such a short book. i especially like how the fbi mistakenly arrests the dupes instead of the roswell gang. there are even some touching moments from the parents, jesse and a lot of lose ends the tv show did not clear up probaly because they were rudely yanked off the air. any true roswell fan will appreciate the effort the writer has put in trying to fit in a lot of ideals in a short time. it has a lot of suspense and it will keep you coming back for more and cursing the author that did not just make one big book out of it instead of making us wait to see what happens in "turnabout"

4-0 out of 5 stars the FBI chase.
Pursuit includes the point of view from the dupes.
meanwhile the 6 teens are still running from the law, but it seems instead of learning from past mistakes they have become slightly careless, through their emails to their parents, the FBI tracks them. Meanwhile the Fbi captures the dupes, thinking that they captured the real podsquad. The dupes and the real roswell gang have a couple of near misses with the FBI, very tense and exciting, litterally felt like my heart was hanging from the clothesline. It is hinted at the end that the podsquad and co. are through running and hiding, they're getting ready to fight, this decision made from Liz's new vision. This book is a little more funnier than the others, but is gripped with suspense, romantically wise though it was a big disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five silver handprints for this alien themed novel
I was pleasantly surprised with "Pursuit," the latest of the novels derived from the TV series "Roswell." Beginning with a brief explanation of the background and characters for the uninitiated, the authors serve us a well-developed plot that builds on the past exploits of the characters. It is very much an "action" novel, but not without exploring the thoughts, feelings, relationships, and ethical dilemmas of the characters. Having researched their subject extensively, the authors succeed in revealing believable answers to many of the science fictional mysteries left hanging by the TV series. Authors Mangels and Martin deserve a 5 silver handprint rating for writing a book that will make readers want to buy the soon-to-be released sequel, "Turnabout," and maybe even spark interest in the publication of more stories in film and print about the other-worldly young adults. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cardcaptor Sakura Rules!
This is my favourite anime. And after reading the last six manga in this series, i waited for Tokyopop to re-release the first six because i knew they would do it justice. i was very happy with the translation in the Master of the Clow series and i am happy they decided to re-do the original! Cardcaptor Sakura is Awesome! ^_^

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Deal w/ Extra Goodies
Tokyopop has truly gone above and beyond manga expectation!!! Cardcaptor Sakura was first licensed by them and done the 'western' way as in reading from left-to-right. In order to do this, all of the pages had to be flipped and then edited with English. A lot of manga/anime/otaku fans did not like this concept and it was Tokyopop who took the initiative to do the traditional Japanese way of right-to-left, calling it "100% Authentic Manga"!

After publishing all of Cardcaptor Sakura mangas, they have decided to release the first 6 mangas that were flopped left-to-right back into the traditional right-to-left!

This is the first boxset of Cardcaptor Sakura containing the first 3 mangas/graphic novels. Included as a bonus are bookmarks that portrayed the characters on clowcards! If you do the the math, of $15 cdn multiplied by 3 it equals to $$$ cdn and this does not include the bookmarks nor the traditional left-right format! Tokyopop is definitely improving the quality of their graphic novels to look similar to the Japanese mangas. Similar to the Wish graphic novels they released, the first and last page of these graphic novel has a double-sided colour page on thick semi-gloss paper. While the rest is the good quality recycled newspaper. This is great because we get to see COLOUR aside from the front cover. =P

For all you hard-core otakus out there (including myself), they have re-written these graphic novels. Going by their original Japanese names and sticking with their culture of respecting others. At the end of each name, Japanese would address a person by Name-san or Name-chan. Very cute as Sakura-chan refers to Tomoyo (aka Madison from CC dubbed) as Tomoyo-chan. ^_^

The graphic novels are enclosed in a box/book-shelf. Unlike the Magic Knight Rayearth Boxset, Tokyopop has invested a lot more quality into the box/book-shelf. I was surprise to find it very sturdy and glossy! ^v^ This will definitely keep these graphic novels safe away from danger. =P

A great buy that you will not regret! This series is very a cute-addicticting series that will not leave you disappointed. If you enjoy cute costume outfits by the talented Tomoyo-chan, and an easy to get hook on story, you'll be obsess with this adorable manga like the rest of shoujo and cosplayers everywhere. =^-^= ... Book Description

With the Death Star destroyed, the Empire has declared martial law throughout the galaxy. A thousand worlds have felt the oppressive hand of the Emperor as he attempts to crush the growing Rebellion. As the Imperial grip of tyranny tightens, Luke, Leia, Han, and the rest of the small band of freedom fighters continue to press for the salvation of the planets -- but such a small crew stands little hope of succeeding against the dominant might of the Empire. But sometimes that's all it takes -- a little hope. Dark Horse Comics is proud to present, in an all-new package, the comics adaptation of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back -- The Special Edition. By Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson, this classic adaptation is reprinted from the original Star Wars comic-book series and is now collected with an all-new cover to celebrate the theatrical release of The Empire Strikes Back -- The Special Edition. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dark Horse Finally Offers Hope
In 1997, the first Star Wars Trilogy, for better or worse, got a digital makeover and rereleased in theaters. As part of the "celebration", Dark Horse Comics decided to adapt the trilogy for the comic book format. Even though, I was disappointed with the SE adaptations for Empire and Jedi-they just slapped new covers, added sketches, and that's it-releasing the old adaptations basically intact. I am happy to say that for A New Hope, more care was taken to follow the updated film, making for a better book. Don't get me wrong, I think the films didn't need any tampering with, but if you advertise the Special Edition version then follow through...

THE STORY: Adapted by Bruce Jones, the story includes, the new scenes and enhanced special effects shots. Thankfully, Jones lets the action speak for itself, rather than using novel like prose to do it. It's still there but its kept to a minimum. The script is very faithful to the film.

THE ART: Eduardo Barretto takes more care to follow the film with his renderings. The characters and situations are fairly on target with their film counterparts. THe art is juiced by accurate colors and shades for the action.

The 109 page book includes a gallery of covers from the newstand single issue versions. There's also bios of the creative team behind the book and a well written introduction by series editor Bob Cooper. A solid read worthy of Star Wars. It's a shame that more care wasn't put into the Special Edition adaptations of Empire and Jedi. Hope is recommended

3-0 out of 5 stars Frozen In Carbonite
When Star Wars creator George Lucas decided reissue the first trilogy, as "new and improved", into the multiplex in '97, several tie-ins also got an update as well. Dark Horse Comics put out special editions of each film's comic book adaptation.

THE STORY: The special edition version isn't all that different from the original book. Adapted by Archie Goodwin, the stroy follows the film pretty well. My main problem with his work here is his overuse of description. Comic books based on films can get bogged down with too much prose and such is the case here. Another problem is that the new material in the film is not reflected in the story itelf. I know the material doesn't amount to much but it would have been cool nonetheless.

THE ART: The team of Al Williamson and Carlos Garzon, who also did the art chores on the adaptation for Jedi, is adequate at best. Their work is uneven. Sometimes its breathtaking, and at others it seems rushed. Many of the characters seem off from their on screen counterparts.

The 104 page book includes 2 pages of scenes from the special edition in sketch/storyboard form. Overall though, the book is disappointing. A great film classic like "Empire deserves better--special edition or not

1-0 out of 5 stars Trash!
I tend to rate books against other books of their type, so while I may give both a Star Wars book and Dune 5 stars, there is no comparison, Dune is better. By the same token, I won't judge a comic as harshly as a novel, because I have different and lower expectations of it.

Even so, this Graphic Novel is a complete waste of time, paper, and money. The interior art is pretty bad, and the character renderings uninspired, and 3PO has way too much freedom of movement. They put way too much effort into throwing in every last little detail added for the special edition of the film, and it was obvious.

This comic was EXTREMELY dependant on the reader having seen the movie. The dialogue and scenes jumped around so much that if I didn't know the movie virtually by heart, I'd be lost by only a couple of pages into the book. Though the lettering itself is good, it can't make up for the confusing, erratic clips of dialogue.

The Millenium Falcon looked messed up, and the TIE Fighters looked pitifully small and smashed. This is a horribly bad adaptation of a great film. The only good part of this book is getting to see Dormans' fabulous cover work at the end.

Don't buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comic Book edition.

Book Description

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the latest in a long tradition of young women who've been trained to give their lives in the war against vampires. We've gotten glimpses of these other women over the years on TV, in comics, and in books. Now for the first time, the writers from the television series, including the show's creator, Joss Whedon, and one of its stars, Amber `Tara` Benson, present the tales of these girls, with the help of comics greatest artists. Gene Colan, co-creator of Marvel's Blade and Tomb of Dracula, returns to Dark Horse for the story of a young black girl in 1970s New York, battling vampires. Tim Sale, fan-favorite artist of recent epics Batman: The Long Halloween and Superman for All Seasons teams with Joss Whedon for a grim tale of a medieval slayer. American comics legend P. Craig Russell (Dr. Strange, The Ring of the Nibelung) and international rising star Mira Friedmann (Actus Tragicus) also join the stellar lineup. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Buffy Newcomers Will Enjoy This Book
I've never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not the movie, not the TV show, never read any of the books or comics, nada, zip, nothing. I bought Tales of the Slayers because I'm a big fan of artist Gene Colan. The reason I'm spelling all of this out is to convince potential buyers that the 8 stories in this book stand up well on their own; No previous knowledge of the Buffy Universe is required.

Of the eight stories, three are written by Buffy creator Joss Whedon, including my favorite, "Righteous", illustrated by artist Tim Sale, where a Slayer saves a French village from a horde of Bloodsuckers, only to face a very different fate. Whedon also contributes a "Fray" tale, which sees the future Slayer (Star of the Dark Horse Comics mini-series which is about a Year behind schedule...) discovering her legacy. Jane Espenson & P. Craig Russell contribute "Presumption" which delivers one hell of a surprising twist, so don't peek at the ending! All of the stories are excellent, with even the weakest one being well worth reading. Tales of the Slayers is well worth purchasing if you're a fan of Buffy and/or Vampire stories in general. Hey Dark Horse- Any chance of a sequel?

4-0 out of 5 stars No, really 4 and a half
This comic is great. I'm currently going through Buffy withdrawl,(due to the series ending) and I've always been interested in the Slayer history, so this was the perfect buy. Akin to things like The Animatrix and Tales of the Slayer, 1, and 2, in that it explores the roots of the stories we know and love today, Tales of the Slayer is great. I particularly enjoyed the expansion of the story of Nikki (the 70's New York Slayer, Spike's 2nd Slayer kill) and the First Slayer herself, though it was merely a prolouge. I also like the bit on the future Slayer known a Flay, I believe. Joss Whedon's own creation. Especailly the last picture, with Flay realizing she is not alone in her power. Great picture.
THe Slayer burned at the stake (I forget her name) was a good story, as was the Slayer disguised as a boy.
In short, TotS is a great comic. Albeit, a bit short, but a must read for those interested in the history of the sisterhood of Slayers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short by very, very, sweet..
'Tales of the Slayers' is one of the few comic books I have read and it was a wonderful experience. The eight tales contained herein are delicious additions to the slayer mythology.
When the movie 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' came out in the early 90s, I was fascinated by this mythology, by this heritage. But I didn't feel the movie handled it as well as my imagination did. And the TV show (while it is my favorite TV show), doesn't exactly focus on it. Now there is 'Tales of the Slayers,' and to my mind it fulfills the potential of that mythology laid out all those years ago.
Themes that are also often explored in the show are explored here- themes relating to isolation, struggling to understand the dynamics of good and evil, dealing with death on a daily basis, etc.
The stories are beautifully told, both in the writing and the art. The only complaint- and this may actually be further endorsement- is that it leaves you wishing for more.

2-0 out of 5 stars these 'tales' are barely anecdotes
While it's fun to imagine the Slayer in her various incarnations, this volume at a slim 80 pages, took me about 15 minutes to read, and was a very light slayer snack- at best.

The stories are short, some of them are boring & it is certainly NOT worth the money!

Not recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for fans of 'Buffy'
This is a great book for 'Buffy' fans looking to explore more of the backstories on Slayers past and future. This volume presents 8, easily digestible, tales encompassing time periods from the 'Original' Slayer, Medeival Europe, The Wild West, Nazi Germany, NYC in the 70's and even a futuristic tomorrow. The quality of each tale shines through as most are written by writers from the actual TV show - Whedon, Jane Espenson, Doug Petrie, etc. Of equal quality is the artwork - different artists were used for each story giving each tale a unique sense of visual style. Particularly interesting is Mira Friedman's almost woodblock approach on the Nazi-era, 'Sonnenblume,' and Gene Colan's 1970's flair on 'Nikki Goes Down!' ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book 10 of the Jedi Apprentice Series!
Obi-Wan Kenobi and his master Qui-Gon Jinn are sent to keep the peace between the planets Rutan and Senali. But they have more than enough on their hands when conflict arises between the two rulers. For many years, the firstborn children of the rulers of the planets are exchanged at a certain age. Instead of promoting peace this time, the planets are on the brink of war. Leed, the firstborn heir to the throne of Rutan, does not want to go back to his home planet and his father will stop at nothing to get him back. Will Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan be able to bring peace and keep the situation from turning to war and bloodshed?

For a children's series, each and every Jedi Apprentice book is jam-packed with excitement and suspense, at the same time giving you time to think. I love how the author makes it so even older people can read the books! "The Shattered Peace" has a flowing plot, not giving in to meaningless subplots or too much action. The ending is quite unexpected and more satisfying that I had at first thought it would be.

I also like the different array of humans and aliens which are portrayed, both good and bad.

Plust check out the new Jedi Quest series, dealing with the master and apprentice duo of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Shattered Peace
Four words: Not enough lightsaber battles! True, that sounds rather pathetic from a book reviewer, but consider this, 'The Shattered Peace' is all about Jedi and their peace-keeping abilities, not their magnetism to break-neck action. (Not to say that this book doesn't have action...) Now, if you're wanting to have the end spoiled for you, you've come to the wrong place! I'm going to limit myself to saying that Qui-Gon Jinn is able to salvage the situation with some help from his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Jude writes masterfully, getting the book to build tension early, not allowing you a reading break for fear of missing something important. Twists and turns along the way, shock you as they shock Obi-Wan. Not surprisingly, Qui-Gon Jinn expected a few of them. Older Jedi take away all the fun...

Compared to the other books of the Jedi Apprentice Series, this one has much less raw emotion on the parts of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, leaving older readers wondering if that was the end of the emotional trip for the two.

Not to worry, though. This book holds a preview of the next chapter in the series, No. 11, 'The Deadly Hunter', and I must say, it looks like a thrill ride compared to this one!

So! If you're wanting a fantastic, unbelievable read... Wait for the next book. If you're just wanting a fun and entertaining read, get this one. And that's all she wrote.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shattered Expectations
The Shattered Peace is a dip in the road that is the Jedi Apprentice series. It is hardly as good as most of its predecessors, suffering from a mostly predictable story, and, in fact, a story that feels like one we've read a dozen (or at least nine) times before. And what there is of a plot is seriously flawed. Rutan and Senali have been exchanging crown princes for generations, we're told, yet the reigning rulers behave as if each has never left his planet! Perhaps a ten year old will not be troubled by this giant oversight, but this thirty three year old couldn't get past it.

It would be impossible to reach a constant level of excellence over ten books, so the relative mediocrity of The Shattered Peace should not dissuade one from continuing on with the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars One person's anger could be the start of a terrible war.
In The Shattered Peace, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon must travel to the planets Rutan and Senali in order to help them avoid war. For years the firstborn children of the royal families were exchanged in order to promote peace, they thought that the kings would not attack the other planet if their children were there. But Leed, the prince of Rutan, wishes to remain on Senali. His father, King Frane, insists that he is being brainwashed and sends Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Taroon, his second son, to Senali to find him. They arrive on Senali and Leed tells them that he is not being brainwashed and that he truly loves it there. After Leed agrees to face his father, he is kidnapped by a mysterious group of Senalians with clay smeared all over their bodies. Qui-Gon is forced to tell King Frane, who immediately threatens to declare war if Leed is not found and brought home. Now Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan must figure out who is behind this in order to prevent war between the two planets. This book wasn't the best but it was still really good. But the only thing Obi-Wan did was think about how much he was reminded of the incident on Melida/Daan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too good , but O.K
This book wasn't as good as the others, but it just goes to show what different writers imaginations are like. I'm not going to tell you what happens in this book, but if your a jedi apprentice fan I guess your going to read it anyway and find out for yourself what happens.Anyway, if you are first readers of these series, I recommend that you start reading from book one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sailor Moon #10
This has to be my all time favorite book ever! The drawings in the book are beautiful. The story is heartbreaking until the end of the book, then it gets a little happier (not much though). If you want to know a little bit more about the book here's a little overview . . . The story branches off of #9 so if you haven't read it, read it first. Mistress 9 has taken over Hotaru's body! Now she thinks she can take over the world but Hotaru won't let it happen. Amy, Rei, Mina, and Lita have had their Hoste taken from them by Mistress 9. Can Hotaru save them while trying to keep Mistress 9 from taking over the world and trying to protect Rini? Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna have put up a barrier but they're power is failing. What can they do? Since Serena is left all alone, her Super Sailor Moon transformation is gone. Can she save the world without being as strong as she was when she was Super Sailor Moon? Darien and Rini soon arrive on the scene and the scouts are revived. Now Super Sailor Moon must save the world. But can she do this wihtout anyone getting hurt or killed? Now that the world is about to end there is only one thing she can do, release the power of both the Legendary Moon Chalice and the Silver Imperium Crystal inside of Master Pharaoh 90. She calls for the chalice then makes a leap of faith straight into Master Pharaoh 90. Is there any hope to save the world? Will Super Sailor Moon be alright? Find out in this breathtaking story written and illustrated by Naoko Takecuchi. It's the one book you can't miss. Sailor Heartbreak

...Sailor moon book 10 is one of my favorits, it allways keeps you one the edge of the seat.Since I have read them all but stars 3 and this is a keeper. Its about the heroic tale of Sailor Moon and how she fights allways to save every one. she never wants to sacrafice a life I tell you that. Its the final battle between Misstress 9 and a little bit of pharo 90. it goes through how sailor moon suffers to fight for love and justice, to save Houtar form evil, and to save Chibiusa's life. Its a great book! if ya ask me, this is a deffinet to add to your sailor moon Manga collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!
This book is a wonderfully drawn and written manga(comic) by Naoko Takeuchi. Sailor Moon really shows how much she has matured over the time. It shows you death really is a part of a fight. Love and action is all thourghout this book making you sometimes very sad. If you like the Japanese anime (cartoon) version you'll love this book. I recommend you buy the books in order though.
