5-0 out of 5 stars Sophie by Rosie Rushton
Sophie by Rosie Rushton is a great novel. The book is about a girl named Sophie who's Mom doesn't care about what is important to her but only about meeting the right people. Sophie wishes her mom would care about things that matter like her father who does charity work in Africa. Sophie loves her father very much and wants to hang out with him a lot more. When he comes for a visit and she goes to a shelter with him for a poverty report for school she sees that her father is not that great after all, especially because he does not approve of her going out with her boyfriend Tony who is a mixed race. At the end she sees that her mom is actually very cool and her dad is not as great as she thought he was.
I liked this book a lot because the plot was very creative. I thought it was very clever how at the beginning Sophie thought her dad was the best but at the end she found out that he wasn't that great. I also liked how she became very relaxed around Tony when around most boys she was very nervous and uneasy. I loved the setting of the book, which was London and the lingo they used it was very interesting to learn and decipher. The setting of the book was also very unique to me because most books I have read are in every day boring settings but London is a very cool and unique place.
In conclusion I think that Sophie by Rosie Rushton is a great novel. It is very interesting and will keep you at the edge of your seat and you won't be able to put it down.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for teenage girls who like reality.
The book Sophie was written by Rosie Rushton had a fantastic plot. This book is about an average teenage girl who has problems that most teenagers have to deal with. Sophie has a nagging mother, a divorced father who wants her to move in with him, and a girl in school that annoys her. Sophie, the average teenager who lives with her divorced mother finds out that the "grass isn't always greener on the other side." She has a report that has to be written for her life skills class about poverty. Growing up going to private school and living in a posh apartment on top of her mother's home furnishing's store, Sophie doesn't exactly know what being poor is like. Soon though, she is about to find out. When her father comes to visit, he tells her about his charity work that he is doing in Africa. Sophie's father was thinking of moving to England and to have Sophie live with him. I enjoyed this book very much, and I thought that it was very interesting. If you are a teenage girl, then this book is going to be very fun for you and your friends to read. The book is almost two hundred and fifty pages, but it is not hard to understand. If these topics sound familiar to you, then I would read the book Sophie that was written by Rosie Rushton. ... Read more

Book Description

As seventh grade begins, Lizzie Archer knows she can't endure another year of being derided as the class nerd. Maybe she can't stop being smart -- does she want to? -- but at least she doesn't have to look so different. Out of her Emily Dickinson dresses and into Gap jeans she goes, and the effect is amazing. The girls talk to her; the boys tease her. But her braininess remains an obstacle to her popularity, and Lizzie wants so to be liked, especially by Ethan Winfield. To her teacher's amazement, Lizzie begins to make mistakes in math. Ethan is horrified -- he's her math partner -- but no one is more unhappy, or confused, than Lizzie. Will she ever find herself? Through her sparkling Lizzie Archer, Claudia Mills extends a hand to girls, gently encouraging them to be all that they can and to feel confident that like will befriend like.

4-0 out of 5 stars lizzie at last
This story is about a girl named Lizzie and she is always been called the lizard. This year she is going to start seventh grade and the night before School starts her aunt takes her out for shoes. Her aunt also buys her new school clothes when she wore them the first day of school. Everyone was so amazed with Lizzie's transformation with her outfits. Instead of her wearing her white old antique Emily Dickinson dresses.
I really enjoyed this book; it was a great fiction story and a lot of people would really enjoy it. If you like to read fiction books and books that change kids school life's by changing the way they dress, and their first dances, and other problems with school then you would really enjoy this book. This is a great book and there are a lot of surprises. This book is a page-turner. You would just want to keep reading it and reading until it is finished. I would not mind reading this book again and again!

4-0 out of 5 stars It makes you think
Though I am in Jr. High, I really enjoyed reading Lizzie At Last because this book makes you think about your originality as a person and it shows you the plus sides and downs sides to manipulating your stlye to fit it. Most things that are in this book is pretty [boring] but for the most part I enjoyed this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Am In Middle School and I Loved This Book!
This book is very good. The life of Lizzie trying to grow out of her Emily Dickinson clothing and her vintage dresses is a roller coaster. Claudia Mills has created a typical plot, a girl who is jsut trying to fit in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lizzie at Last review by Lauren
Have you ever felt you didn't fit in, so you changed yourself on the outside, and accidentally changed yourself on the inside as well? That is what Lizzie, the protagonist, does in the book Lizzie at Last by Claudia Mills. This book teaches you an important lesson, never to change yourself just to be popular or to impress someone. Lizzie is really smart, but she can't be smart if she wants to fit in. So Lizzie pretends to be dumb in math. If I were in Lizzie's place I would act the same because she has special talents that she shouldn't throw away like her poetry.

She just can't help herself, and she needs to impress Ethan, so she goes to football games, and changes her wardrobe. Lizzie goes to two football games. The first game Lizzie goes to she is afraid of the bleachers because they are so high. So she takes her mind off of them by closing her eyes and counting seconds in her head. The second name Lizzie goes to she learns what the cheer "first and ten, let's do it again!" means.

It is hard for Lizzie to be cool because her parents are different from all of the other parents, and that's where Lizzie gets it from. Lizzie's mom has long, curly, red hair going past her waist, and none of the other parents have long hair. Lizzie's dad thinks everyone should read the "New York Times" even if you don't live there. So if you want my opinion, I think you should read this great book.

If you want to find out what happens to Lizzie, and if she changes, then I would encourage you to read this book Lizzie at Last by Claudia Mills.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was good
I reccomend this book to all those girls who are nervous about middle school. I read books a lot and this was a pretty good book. I liked it. I could really relate because some call me a "nerd" cause I read a lot but this teaches you shouldn't change your personality just to impress people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No more bullies
Both of my children gobbled up this delightful 1993 sequel to The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates in the second or third grade. There's great appeal in the realistic characters and dialogue. They fell in love with Joshua.

Joshua was entering the fifth grade. As the school year opened, however, the class (and school) bully, Tommy Wilhelm announced plans for a new "Nerds Out" club. Still sensitive to his failure to make fourth grade on time, Joshua at first refused to stand up to the gang.

That made things worse for him. They put the whole school on the defensive, but Joshua got the brunt of their nastiness--until, that is, they decided to pick on a new kid in the class who had no friends and liked Joshua. Worse, Joshua's mother told him to be nice to the new boy.

The N.O.s plotted and planned and pulled a very nasty prank, which worried the entire class, and all the teachers. It was up to Joshua to set things straight. And this he did, managing to put the class bully and his clique in their place. How, I can't say.

Parents, take note. This book is "just right" for kids moving on from early chapter readers. It's challenging but not too hard, and the charmer story line keeps them turning the pages. Alyssa A. Lappen

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, sweet, moving
Another frustrated children's author must have written the last review, because this sequel to the sweet and hilarious The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates is every bit as wonderful as the first book. Susan Shreve is one of our best young adult writers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like "The Flunking Of..." this is a horrible book.
The author of the "Joshua Bates" line does not exhibit much ability to write above the third grade level herself. It is a horrible book to expose young readers to, both for a poor story line and for terrible grammatical errors in the text. It is best avoided and has been removed from our curriculums allowed reading list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book #21 in SVH Senior Year Series
Ken Matthews is "The It Guy" after Will Simmons loses his spot as SVH's quarterback due to a leg injury (which happened in the previous book, "Nothing Is Forever")--and now Ken gets that position back. This whole book felt like Ken had suddenly slipped into Will's shoes--he takes his position, could possibly win his football scholarship, and even sneaks a "consoling" hug with his girlfriend (Melissa Fox). This latter incident has Maria Slater (Ken's girlfriend) feeling extremely insecure, and why not? The reader can feel something brewing between Ken and Melissa, which might develop into more in the next book: "So Not Me" (especially after how this book ends)--not that I think they'd work out; I just like the drama, which makes this series so good.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Wakefield, Tia Ramirez, Andy Marsden, Maria, Evan Plummer, Megan, and Mrs. McDermott plan an intervention concerning Conner's drinking problem. (Big cliffhanger there.) And Jessica Wakefield and Jade Wu are still fighting over Jeremy Aames--the score still being in Jade's favor.

"The It Guy" was a good SVHSY book, particularly if you're a Ken fan, since he's more in the spotlight. The two short children's stories by Elizabeth (p 74-8) and Conner (p 140-5) were a nice touch as well, illustrating how each feels their relationship is going, though how they react to their problems is not surprising at all: Liz being the comforter, and Conner being the loner. It'd be nice to see some kind of resolve between these two--good or bad, I don't care; just as long as it's soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Melissa and Will!
First off, I feel there should have been more Melissa and Will. They had the whole book last time about them, and just drop them off. I htink they should have had Will in the hospital, maybe we would have found out hwy he has shoned Melissa. I know everyone hates them, but Will and Melissa are my favorite characters, they flavor to the series. Ken and Maria was a dissapointment, I love them together. I just hope he doesn't hook up with Melissa, which might actually happen. The Conner thing is getting really old, they need to solve it. I am glad they are fading out the twins, they get dull real fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars The It Guy
One of the welcome additions to the series SVH Senior Year. Why?Because the perfect couple Ken and Maria break up and oh no naughty Ken is going after Melissa. But in more depth now:Ken has become the new 'it guy' because after Will went off the field with an injury Ken took over and helped win the game.He is loving all the popularity he is getting but he seems to be choosing football over Maria and Maria is feeling jealous and alone.Conner's friends and family are planning an intervention because they are afraid he's got a drinking problem. Will they succeed or scare him away? Also after Jessica dragged Jeremy to see cheating Jade,Jessica is trying to get back together with Jeremy. But Jade also wants him back.Somehow I don't think these two will be friends after this. They already aren't.
This is intertwined with diary-like incerpts and e-mail messages and makes for a quick fun read.If you like this you will definitely like the rest of the series. The books are small and will keep you entertained. If this sounds good I suggest you find a copy. The next one after this is So Not Me.

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
I am not a big fan of Maria but I do think it was wrong that Ken dumped her. Either way the series has gotten more exciting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Was Expecting Better
This book was kind of boring. I never thought that I would actually say this, but Maria annoyed me in this book. She seemed to be very insecure, and self-abosorbed, and to me she hardly considered Ken's feelings, but in some ways the same things could be said about Ken. I have to agree with some of the other reviewrs, the Conner things is getting old, please resolve it soon. I hate to say it, but I really could care less about the character of Conner, all he is about is self-pity, Liz needs to find someone new. I didn't like the Jermey and Jade thing. ... Read more

Amanda Bates, older sister of Joshua T. Bates, has always been a "good girl," gotten good grades, and played by the rules. But now that she's in junior high, Amanda is discovering that those rules have changed. Her friends have all gone to other schools, her body's changing, her moods are up and down . . . she doesn't even recognize herself! Amanda decides that her only chance to fit in is to join "the Club," so she dyes her hair purple, changes her name to Cheetah, cuts school, and starts dating an older boy with a shady past. 1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage
The characters were very shallow. The plot was predictable.Instead of enriching the lives of the children who read it, this book instead gives them cause to relate to bad decisions and to sympathize with a girl who makes bad decisions herself. There was no adversity in Amanda's life, nothing to overcome or triumph over. She was a self-centered adolescent with absolutely no parental guidance or influence.I wouldn't DREAM of handing this to my 8 year old (as some childish reviewer suggested)I feel sorry for the kids who have nothing better than this pathetic book to read.Parents and gift-givers, SKIP over this book, it is devoid of substance and basically teaches kids to be brats. It's like the older kids version of Junie B Jones.Books like this teach kids not to trust their parents, gives them actual dialog to use when talking back and lying to Mom and dad.Like families actually NEED a curriculum to make the adolescent years more difficult.I can't believe this book was rated for 9 year olds.

3-0 out of 5 stars cute, pre-teen book
the 8 year old i babysit didn't like this book, but she isn't at the boys-boys-boys stage. i picked this up off the playroom table and read it while the girls played their harry potter game.

i thought it was cute. i was and still am a bookworm, and it was fun to read a pre-teen book for the new century. no one in a judy blume book ever wore purple lipstick, or black clunky shoes- as amanda, the good does.

even now at 28, i felt the throb of misplacement and confusion that amanda is going through in the book. seventh grade is hard. and while shreve touches oh-so lightly on some of the bigger issues young girls face (peer pressure, self-image), she doesn't really supply the reader with a whole lot of substance. she mentions that amanda's clothes are all too tight several times, and i was hoping she'd give the reader some small self-acceptance with your body bit, but instead she chose to concentrate on being yourself by turning away from gossip girls and turning toward the on the mend- once troubled, boy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad!!!
In the book, the main character has to switch schools. Of course, she has to decide who's who. The question is- who CAN she trust?

This is a good realistic fiction book. It's very realistic. Perfect for ages 8-11.
The best parts of the book were the CONFESSION SESSIONs, where you get to see what all the minor characters are thinking.

Definitely a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect solutions to girls!!!!
The first book of Rockett's World was great!!! It sometimes involves friendship problems and solutions that can really help when it comes to me. Really like there is always somebody like Nicole in everyday life. You might not know how to solve it, but after reading this book, it gave me some kind of idea of how to be a true friend and the make decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!
The first book in the Rockett series is the longest one and its totally exciting finding out what the characters are going to do and their reactions, one of the features of the book. Its funny because of the previous war between Rockett & Nicole [play the pM games] and finding out how Rockett uses her Nicole picture to give Nicole what she deserves...or does she?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a kid in Junior High
The book was great! I loved how it accurately portrayed life in junior high. The interactions between the characters were typical of students in middle schools today. Rockett is stellar! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All Eyes On Angel Eyes!
7th grader, Rachael Miller has a secret. She can see and speak with her guardian angel. And her guardian angel is not just any old angel; she's Rachael's twin sister who'd passed away when they were five. In Angel Eyes, we learn that having a guardian angel can be fun, exciting, and a real learning experience!

I found Angel Eyes to be the perfect book for preteen girls. The parties, the friends, the boys...all hit close to home for girls this age. And with the great pink cover art, it makes a perfect girl gift. I loved this book, and think you'll enjoy it too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Fast
I'm one of those people with silly phobias, one of which, is the Fear of Santa Claus. However, I'm also a fan of horror literature, and so naturally I love to read books that have something scary happen around Christmas, or perhaps the villin being jolly o' saint Nick himself. In this case, I came into reading this book knowing Santa wasn't going to be wielding an axe, and as far as a wintery Christmas theme, there was none. It all takes place on a tropical island. But, it was cheap enough, the cover looked pretty scary, and the sample pages Amazon provided looked like it was going to be good. Unforntunatly, it wasn't as good as I had hoped for.

Athkins obviously had a great idea for a novel, but was unable to get all his thoughts together. The book starts out by briefly describing 7 or so teenagers, the main one being Djuna Dufrage who is the Most Popular girl in the entire school, someone all the guys want, and all the girls want as a friend. At least, that's what it says on the back of the book, and that's how her peer's treat her, but IN the book she is described as being rude, unfriendly, and even goes into the girls bathroom to smoke. Anyway, this "popular" girl selects a few luckily peers to be invited to her famous Christmas party--this one being held on an island she OWNS (we never know about her rich parents, where they are, or what they do) so by page 20 or so (yes, it moves that fast! but not the good kind of fast, the fast that leaves you going, "What the heck?") all 7 teens are off on a plane and have landed on the island. Right off, 3 more people are introduced (as if we didn't have enough badly described characters) and a few Bad Things happen to the guests. Right away, Athkins has our "main" character debating on Earth the crazy trick-player could be. She even considers her long lost ex-boyfriend that no one knows about.

It was also quite obvious that Athkins wanted the "villin--aka prankster" to be someone you least expect. And I'll admit he had me fooled, I never would have guessed who it was. But at the same time, the Villin had NO reason for being so villiany (he tries to explain the reasoning, but it only fails and leaves you rolling your eyes in disgust) It would have made just as much sense to have it being Mr. Bowl Full of Jelly from the North Pole fly down to the Island and frighten all of Djuna's friends away because she had been smoking in the ladies room.

But all in all, despite the loads of flaws, if you're looking for a Very, VERY short book that can be read in about 3 hours, Secret Santa in the book for YOU!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!.....
Cleo and seven other friends from her high school are invited to a Secret Santa party by popular girl, Djuna. Why? Cleo is new to the school, and has barely said three words to Djuna this year! Before she knows it, she's whisked off by plane to a remote island in the middle of nowhere. After everyone arrives, odd things take place. Gruesome Secret Santa presents, traps set to kill, and eventually they all start disappearing, one-by-one! Who is this phsyco-Santa? What do they have in mind? Murder?.....

"Secret Santa" was awesome! The writing style is unique, switching to each character's actions, which is confusing at first. But once you get in the flow, it's hard to get out! For once, the culprit shocked me! I remember saying to myself before the ending, "It'd be so ironic if the stalker turned out to be __________....." Sure enough, it did! Plus, the stalker's motive was genuine and realistic. Not petty. Apparently, this book isn't getting enough promotion, seeing that I'm the first person to review it after it's been out for a year. Maybe because everyone knows that D. E. Athkins' books are all out of print (except this one), they don't bother to check to see if there are any new ones. Well, there are, and it's an awesome thriller! Get your hands on a copy while you can! ... Read more
