aesthetic integrity
By printing each tale as a separate book, this boxed series presents Potter's tales in the form they were originally published. The format allows each story to unfold with a deliberate pace, as the turning of each page reveals a fresh illustration alongside a few sparse lines of text. In contrast, a so-called "complete tales of" volume I looked at totally destroyed the aesthetic integrity of Potter's work by squeezing entire stories into 2 or 3 11" x 8" pages. Furthermore, the illustrations no longer followed the storyline in a linear fashion but instead looked like haphazard afterthoughts. I would recommend this series for preserving that almost undefinable "charm" of the originals.

Family Treasure
My children grew up reading these beautiful little books. Our set is identical to the one pictured, only we bought ours in the early 90s. Now with one in college and one who is a "punk rocker" I can *still* get them both to curl up with me and read Tom Kitten or Jemima PuddleDuck or The Roly-Poly Pudding or their favorite...Ginger and Pickles. Amazing, but true. Both my kids treasure this collection in its lovely case and the set was a very wise purchase. After all, stories like this keep your kids close to you, it is almost a ritual, and a good thing! Other editions of these stories are fine, but there is something about the little books and the special case that creates a sort of magic. Well worth the expense...I *promise.*

An old world approach to children's books
These books were great back in 1909, but now they don't talk to children about their world. They don't even talk about a world of yesteryear in a way that is useful or entertaining. The illustrations are good and can be used to make up a story that is more interesting and understandable to children, but why should this be necessary?

Gorgeous book!
Hubby & I bought this book for our 9 month old daughter. Beatrix Potter is my personal favorite in childrens books. We love the illustrations & the stories are wonderful. Baby loves this book! A must have for parents who are building a book collection for their child. A timeless classic. :)

Irresistible cuddly animals with human personalities.
Beatrix Potter acquired her love and knowledge of animals and the countryside during family holidays in Scotland. She also had animals as her constant companions as a child. She sketched and observed them for hours at a time.

Beatrix Potter's books have never lost their popularity. They are sold by the millions and have been translated into over fifteen languages. While her first story in 1902, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" was published in a small edition by Frederick Warne, within a year it was an instant best seller.

This deluxe volume is a collection of all twenty-three tales and some previously unpublished works. The stories are arranged in the order of publication as several are linked together by events or familiar characters.

Both the watercolors and black and white illustrations have been included. Children will adore the rhyming names of goosey gander and pig-wig. The animals seem to almost take on human personalities. In fact, these magical stories are often connected with real people places or animals.

Little girls who have a doll house will love "The Tale of Two Bad Mice," in which two hungry mice try to eat the artificial plaster doll food. Even at my age I found it irresistibly amusing. These little animals just have such great personalities.

Book for a lifetime of fun reading
I purchased these tales for my eldest, who's now 17, when she was four. They were and continue to be great stories for her. She reads them to children when she babysits! Now I've purchased this book for my youngest, who's four. She just loves hearing the stories. A tale too good to pass up
Caveat: Now if you're in the market to buy "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", I highly recommend that you do NOT purchase the horrendous version illustrated by David McPhail. This interesting monstrosity takes a book that was previous perfect and renders it perverse. I am reviewing the original Beatrix Potter edition of this tale, but because Amazon.com doesn't like to differentiate reviews, I'm fairly certain that this review will also appear for the McPhail book as well. Please, dear readers, do not in any way shape or form purchase the McPhail version if you want the original adept "Peter Rabbit"! Where Potter is adept and charming, McPhail is syrupy and doe-eyed. Where Potter is subtle, McPhail is over the top. Where Potter succeeds, McPhail fails. To locate an original edition of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" click on the author "Beatrix Potter" as it appears at the top of this screen. That should bring you to a selection of choices, one of which is the original "The Tale of Peter Rabbit". Oddly, the only way to purchase that particular original version of the tale is to select her name. I don't know why. Call it a flaw in the Amazon.com system, if you will.

Now, why doesn't Peter Rabbit age? I'm not being literal here, people, so please don't inundate me with explanations that patiently explain that fictional characters in books cannot get old. I won't hear a word of it. Reading "Peter Rabbit" today is just as fresh and new an experience as it was one hundred years ago. Author Beatrix Potter created the story of Peter Rabbit for a young boy with whom she was acquainted. Using the novel idea of drawing animals as they appeared in nature, just in funny clothes and talking, her books are remarkable because she had a dual talent for both illustration and clever narrative. Now after all these years I opened up "Peter Rabbit" to see why I loved it as much as I did as a kid. And the fact of the matter is, it hasn't aged a smidgen. A remarkable and astounding feat for a story originally published in 1903.

Peter lives, as many of us know, in a large fir tree with his mother and his siblings Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail. His father was baked in a pie (a fact that many parents have decried as too dark for children, and that many children have shrugged at without a second thought). Though instructed by his mother NOT to go digging in Mr. McGregor's garden, he's a naughty little thing. His tasty trip is brought up short, however, when he stumbles across the farmer himself. In the course of their chase Peter loses his little blue jacket with the shiny brass buttons and must return to his mother (after a series of close shaves) without it or his shoes. He is promptly put to bed with a cup of camomile tea (a fate we non-camomile tea drinkers must assume is harsh) while his siblings eat the tasty blackberries they picked that morning.

Beatrix Potter claimed that though she was adept at illustrating animals, she had the darndest time (my words, not hers) drawing people. You will note, therefore, that Mr. McGregor is a bit of a featureless wag. The story was remarkable in that it was the first time (I believe) that animals drawn in a picture book actually looked like real animals. Peter is exactly the kind of bunny you'd expect to catch in your yard, except that he's occasionally wearing jaunty spring wear. The similarities in this tale to that of the Brer Rabbit tales of the American South is interesting but due to the fact that Potter was writing this story in 1903 Britain, she probably didn't steal the plot. The book is a classic in the purest sense, of course. If you can get a copy that is small (intended from the start to be the size that little hands could open easily) do. It's a beautiful tale that is as fresh and green today as it was when written long long ago. A classic.

A must
I got this book when I was very young and to this day I still love it. It's a cute story about this naughty little bunny going into Mr. McGregors yard and getting into a big mess. I love the drawings and everything about it. A great book for the kids.

Classic for adults and children
Four rabbit children are told to pick berries by their mother, who also warns the rabbits not to go near Mr. McGregor's garden. Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottaintale obey their mother, but Peter, the mischievous of the four rabbits, ignores his mother's warning and ventures off for some tasty food from Mr. McGregor's garden. While Peter is greedily eating some radishes, he is spotted by Mr. McGregor. Peter tries to dash out of Mr. McGregor's way, only getting further and further away from the garden gate. Will Peter get away from Mr. McGregor, and find his way out of the garden? What will happen when his mother hears what he has done?

Personal Response:
I have loved this story since I was little, probably because any child can relate to Peter's mischievous ways. I have not met a child who could not attest to getting in over their heads after doing something they were told not to do. Beatrix Potter does an amazing job illustrating this well known tale. She brings life to the characters with her beautifully detailed illustrations. The illustrations have soft lines and curves to give a pleasant fell to the story. The pictures go along with the pages of the story as well as adding detail to the reader's mind about the plot and setting. The reader can see the vastness of the garden by looking at Beatrix Potter's illustrations.
The author's ability to suspend disbelief is not very great, because of the nature of the story. This story is made to be a fairy tale, which is not usually believable to children or adults. Children are accustomed to talking animals in stories at the age they would read this book. However, the plot of the story is very realistic to the child. It is realistic because the child can relate to disobeying their parent, and getting into trouble of some sort. They can also relate to the punishment that Peter gets at the end of the story.

A wonderful tale of Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit is one of four rabbits in his family. Very much curious as well as disobedient, Peter decides to wonder off into Mr. McGregor's garden. He has heard the warning given to him by his mother of what Mr. McGregor does to curious, wandering rabbits. Peter slips away from his brother's and sister's while they play in the fields and decides to see this wonderful garden. While in the garden, Peter fills his stomach with delicious carrots, lettuce and other various vegetables. While eating, Mr. McGregor finds the somewhat stuffed rabbit and chases him around his garden. Peter, realizing the mistake he made, only wishes to be free, that he might not make the same mistake again. This book is very well written and can capture the heart of even the oldest person. Filled with detailed pictures, Peter comes to life in this classic tale of tales.

This is my Nephew's favorite book
The pictures in this book are absolutely wonderful. It was my oldest nephews favorite book, his little brother also loves it, unfortunately after five years of hard use I just replaced it with a new one. This is the first time we've ever "worn out" a book!

Beautifully collected stories and illustrations
This childrens book of the classic Beatrix Potter stories is hardbound in a large attractive cover. The illustrations are all wonderfull, and average three pictures per page next to the text which goes along with the scene. My now three year old loves this book.

My mother bought this for my kids, and this is an excellent gift for bedtime, or anytime stories for children. Classics like these are wonderfull to read to children so they can be passed on from generation to generation.

Priceless and timeless tales
I had several of the small Beatrix Potter books as a child. The drawings and stories enchanted me, and the books were just the right size for my hands. This book is much bigger. It also includes more stories than my original collection--nineteen. It is easy to find the Peter Rabbit stories and some of the others in the small books--but some of the stories in this book (such as the wonderful "The Story Of A Fierce Bad Rabbit") I've never seen for sale in individual form. So, if you loved these stories as a child or if you want to introduce them to a child in your life, this large and beautiful book is a good choice. However, when I have children of my own I'll probably also buy a set of the small books, because I enjoyed them so much in that form myself.

Not Just for Children
To read any of Beatrix Potter's books without the benefit of her original drawings is to experience only half of the adventure. Trained as an artist and a naturalist, her drawings not only entertain little readers, but enchant adults who may be reading to their little ones.

Although the recommended age range is 4 to 8, I can speak from our own family's experience that 2 is not to young to start learning from the richness of both the prose and the illustrations; neither is 63 to old to be enchanted all over again by the animal characters drawn upon her days living in the pastoral region of Lake Windermere, England. One can picture Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and friends in the ponds, woods and hedgerows of that gentle region. ... Read more

The eater and the eaten
This story of a struggle between small brown rabbits and a brutal white landowner is rich in symbolism. The landowner has eaten Peterchen's father. Peterchen sets out to eat what is his. The females hold back (the gender of Flopsy, Mopsy and Kuscheschwanzen is ambiguous - it is hinted that Benjamin Hasche is a fellow revolutionary). The white landowner's structures (Gerateschuppe and Stachelbeernetz) devour the environment to provide him with things to eat. As in so many folk tales of the clever trickster Peterchen is helped by birds and outwits the gigantic MacGregor. He finally escapes into the Geholz - the remaining pristine environment - discarding the emblematic uniform with which his mother has encumbered him. Was she innocent in his father's death? She persuades him to take tranqillizing drugs "Einen Essloffel vor dem Schlafengehen einnehmen" and in the final scene, with Peterchen in drugged sleep, capitalist values triumph as the siblings become completely anthropomorphic and feast on manufactured store-bought food.

Pass Auf - Herr MacGregor!
Beautiful pictures helped my two year old really get into the story. When Peterchen sneezed, he sneezed. When Peterchen cried, he cried. The story may be a bit scary for very small children, but there's a happy ending, and it's a good opportunity to explain safety.

This is a German version of the classic Peter Rabbit. It's a good length for a bedtime story, reading in the car, or a distraction on a first airplane ride -- about 10 to 20 minutes to complete the story. The vocabulary is fairly simple and covers many day-to-day items - foods, clothes, gardening.

For those who don't know the story, mom rabbit goes to the bakery to buy brotchen. Peterchen, Floppsy, Mopsy, and Kuschelschwanzchen (Cottontail) are trusted to watch themselves. Peterchen goes where he shouldn't, into Herr MacGregor's garden. After a little snack, he loses his new jacket (second one this week) and shoes. Then he hides in a full watering can, meets some other animals, and finally escapes. When he gets home, he immediately falls to sleep, missing the wonderful dinner that mom got for the other rabbits.

It would be very nice if Amazon carried more foreign language versions of children's books, such as can be found on amazon.de.

A classic in any language
I found that this was a good exercise for me to practice my translation skills while at the same time telling my five year old a story that she can understand. We are looking forward to a transfer to Germany and have started teaching the kids German. ... Read more

THE BEST BEATRIX POTTER BOOK
I bought this book for my best friend who is expecting her first child. I wanted something Beatrix Potter because I grew up to these wonderful stories and I wanted it to be part of her childs life and memories. I am so glad I chose to get this particular book! No real moral but a gorgeous little book...
Unlike some of Potter's other books concerning young animals' rash behavior (Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten) or adult animals' ignorance/trickery (Jemima Puddle Duck, Mr. Tod), this book simply tells the story of Jeremy who is almost eaten by a fish while fishing on a lily pad. The Tale Of Jemima Puddle-Duck
This story is about a duck named Jemima Puddle-Duck and she isn't able to hatch her own eggs because the farmers wife wouldn't let her. Where ever Jemima was she would get caught and her eggs were taken away. Then one day Jemima Puddle-Duck went looking for a place to hatch her eggs. She saw a forest down a hill and started to run for it. She flew down and saw a stump that would be nice to site on but a gentleman was sitting on it reading a newspaper. So Jemima started to quack and he looked at her. He thought she was lost and asked her if she was but really Jemima wasn't. She told him she was looking for a place to hatch her eggs, so he took her back to his house where he has a place full of feathers that would be nice. Jemima kept going to his house and one day she decided to stay there until they were hatched. The gentleman told her he was going to cook an omlette for her so he told her to go get some supplies. She did and saw a friend and told him the hole story and one day he went to see her at the gentlemans house. What happened at the end of the book? Read "The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck" to find out.

Naturalistic polemic in duck's clothing.
I always had Beatrix Potter down as an avatar of Home Counties tweeness, with her anti-modern paeans to the countryside and de liddle cuddly animals. So the unsentimental brutalities of this story came as a welcome shock. 'Jemima Puddle-Duck' is as endearingly hopeless as her name suggests, unable to tend her eggs in the overcrowded barn she shares with some supercilious hens. She flies over the forest in search of a suitably solitary spot, and comes across a helpful gentleman dressed in tweed, reading 'The Sporting Times'. He is a fox, and invites her to make use of his summer residence, in particular the shed carpeted with the feathers of previous victims. Dazzled by his good breeding, Jemima accepts his offer and visits daily. When the eggs are about to hatch, Foxy suggests she bring along various goodies so they can have a charming goodbye party...

The unremitting violence in this story does not emanate from where you'd expect, and this clear-eyed vision of the natural order of things, of brute force vs. cunning, takes place in the most idyllic setting yuou can think of, a richly detailed rural England, its hills and plants alive and painted in the most soothing colours. But even this balmy backdrop plays out a cycle of struggle for domination, with spiders eating flies, and various other creatures being horrid to one another.

Written at the turn of the 20th century, just before female emancipation, it's hard not to see the woebegotten Jemima as an image of women's fate in a world run by men, both good and bad, with the fox as parisitic aristo in straitened circumstances, and the dog as paternalistic liberal. Indeed, the whole thing plays like an Emile Zola potboiler disguised as toddler fodder. Upsetting, cruel and marvellous.

Scary for younger children
This book is not appropriate for children who are too young to separate fantasy from fact. It contains images of danger and death and the main character, Jemima, is portrayed as inept and stupid. I realize that millions of kids have enjoyed this book over the years, but my child will have to wait until she's old enough to understand these concepts and not be frightened by them.

The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck
The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck was the first Beatrix Potter book I read when I was young. It is the tale of a barnyard duck named Jemima who wishes to hatch her own eggs instead of leaving the task to the hens. She decides to leave and find a place to nest and encounters a polite gentleman with sandy whiskers who so kindly offers his help. It is a charming tale, as so many of Ms. Potter's stories are, complete with an endearing if not somewhat naive duck, a handsome yet sly fox and a wise old collie dog. the tale of benjamin bunny
This book is very easy to like and it makes yo want to read more. It talks about how he lost his clothes and much more if you wat to find out then you better read it.

Benjamin Bunny
My 2 year old loves this story she calls it, the bunny's friend book. She enjoys this story more than Peter Rabbit. I think that the story is more eventful than Peter Rabit; and it is nice that the bunnies get to finish their adventure. I have read hundreds of stories to my daughter and we both find this one enjoyable my 5 month old also seems to enjoy it. She likes the colorful pictures. A very good book
The story of Squirrel Nutkin who is a very disrespectful and rude and provocative squirrel who gets taught a very tough lesson. Learning is not alway painless. Learning is not always pleasurable or fun. This is a fact of life.

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin
The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is one of my favorite Beatrix Potter stories along with The Tailor of Gloucester and The Tale of Ginger and Pickles. It is the story of a rather mischievous young squirrel named Nutkin who loves to tease old Mr. Brown, the owl who lives on an island filled with nut trees. The little rythmes and verses Nutkin recites throughout the story are absolutely delightful. The illustrations are one of Ms. Potter's finest---filled with wonderful detail and color. Some might be offended by the way Nutkin is punished by old Mr. Brown---mainly by having his tail torn off, but if one thinks about it that is the way owls behave in nature. Ms. Potter never honeys things over and her tales always remain a joy to read. Children should not miss out reading this humorous tale.

Violence is not the answer
I was offended and disturbed by the sudden and swift use of violence to teach Squirrel a lesson. There are more effective ways to teach children the value of work and teamplay.

Our 6-month old son is absolutely fascinated by books and magazines. This cloth book is one that is nice and soft; we have no worries about him poking himself in the eye or tearing off pieces that he might choke on. When I was a girl, my mother read this book to me over and again. I remember begging her to read it to me, and when I was old enough reading it myself. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, including the "Two bad mice", and as in all Beatrix Potter books it is well written and a lesson is well learned. Tiny!
When they say miniature, they mean it! The books and type are teeny! I suggest buying larger, more legiable versions of the best: Jemimia Puddle-Duck, Tom Kitten, Flopsy Bunnies, Peter Rabbit. With a version this small you can't see any of the illustrations. ... Read more

Kat's Kind Review
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter was an excellent book. I would recommend it to people of all ages even though it was s targeted towards younger children. The book was about four little rabbits that all wanted to go down the lane or into the fields. The only place that they were not allowed to go was Mr. McGregor's garden. Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail were good little bunnies and went down the lane to the field. But Peter was very mischievous. He went to Mr. McGregor's garden!! When he got into the garden he saw the best sight of his life. There was food galore! He started to eat and eat and eat. He couldn't stop. Then Mr. McGregor found him and chased him through the garden! Peter had many obstacles that stood in his way! Did he make it out safe? Read the book and you will find out.

A Good Book for Young Toddlers
I purchased this book for our daughter when she was about 6 months old but she wasn't at all interested in it, unlike 95% of our other purchases. Then at about 12 months she picked it out for me to read it to her, and it has increasingly become a favorite. I think the reason she didn't like it earlier on was, ironically, the same reason I readily purchased it - the beautiful watercolor illustrations. While they are very beautiful, they are somewhat muted resulting in a look that blurs all of the detail together. Of course, this is just a guess. At any rate, she now very much enjoys this book, and anticipates the action, such as Peter sneezing, or the "scr-r-ritch, scratch" of a hoe. Board books with a storyline are somewhat more difficult to find than the counting, color, alphabet, opposites, etc. kind, and my daughter has always definitely enjoyed stories. Additionally, this book teaches us there are repercussions for our actions, but in a tone that is mild and appropriate for young toddlers. If this is what you're looking for, and you're not looking for storybooks for a younger baby, this would be an excellent choice. ... Read more

A beautiful book for children
Lucy is always misplacing her things. No matter how good she tries to be, she still loses her hankies and other things. One day, she decided to go on a hunt for her hankies. Along the way, she asks creatures if they've seen her handerchief. And she meets Mrs. TIggy-Winkle.

It is a charming story with beautiful illustrations. My boys really enjoy looking at the pictures of this book! I enjoy reading this one to them! When they are older, this book will be perfect for their beginner's lessons. The pictures are charming and the story itself is lovely.

The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle
"The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle" is another perfectly splendid story by Beatrix Potter. This time the author introduces a human character to the world of animals. A little girl, Lucie, has a bad habit of losing her pocket-handkerchiefs. On this particular day she has lost three, as well as a pinny. She goes searching for them in the hills where she finds a door going straight into the hill. When she opens it she discovers a clean kitchen and a peculiar little person. Her name is Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and she is a washer-woman. Lucie's missing hankies and pinny are being washed and ironed by her. I love the way Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle's little black nose goes sniffle, sniffle, snuffle, and her eyes go twinkle, twinkle. Also, the way she always answers questions with "if you please'm". The illustrations are nice and children will enjoy Ms. Potter's beautiful narrative and finding out Mrs Tiggy-Winkle's true identity. ... Read more
