Book Description

Brer Rabbit is one of the craftiest characters you will ever meet. Locked in an eternal game of catch-me-if-you-can with Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit thinks up the most outrageous tricks to outsmart him time and time again. And when he's not scheming against hungry Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit is busy trying to outwit Brer Weasel, Brer Terrapin, Brer Bear, and all of his other friends just for the fun of it. African-American storyteller Karima Amin's lively retelling of ten classic Brer Rabbit tales is based on the stories that she heard as a child. "I was a little girl when I first met Brer Rabbit," she recalls. "My mother brought him into our house and into my life. Many years later, I learned that Brer Rabbit was a hero-trickster character created by my foreparents, enslaved Africans," Amin uses her storyteller's art to recreate the oral tradition that kept these powerful stories alive on the plantations of the Old South. Eric Copeland's illustrations match the humor and mischief of the text, while photographs invite readers to explore the stories' settings, their African roots, and the life of their collector, Joel Chandler Harris. Great fun to read aloud, these are stories to be shared and treasured by all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brer Rabbit, Every Child's Pal
I give The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends to every new baby I know! As a parent, grandparent, early childhood educator and school board member, I am thrilled to find a book that meets my criteria for excellence. Karima Amin has skillfully combined the richness of the vernacular language with current concepts and expressions familiar to today's child. The colorful, active illustrations also draw us into the wonderful world of pranks, surprises, and fun. Sections on the African storytelling tradition, the Southern plantation world of Brer Rabbit, and the animals native to Southern USA deepen our learning and appreciation of the treasured tales we have in this lovely book. Brer Rabbit and Friends is perfect for lap reading, group reading, dramatization and learning to be a storyteller. Karima Amin's Brer Rabbit is truly every child's pal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Kids
This is a very good book that my son loves to read over and over again at night:) It not only is entertaining for children, but it teaches them a lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magic Spring Tonic
November is a chilly, leafless month where I live in Western New York. However I just finished re-reading The Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends as retold by performing storyteller Karima Amin, and it was like drinking a magic spring tonic. Instantly, I found myself transported to the warm, sun-drenched, dreamy world of Brer Rabbit and his myriad animal neighbors. The text of each story wraps and winds its way around the lush color illustrations by Eric Copeland, with a sprinkling of big, bold, bouncy exclamations of "Bookity-Bookity", "Splishy-splushy", and "Lippity-clippety" jumping out to grab your attention at just the right moment. The stories have a universal appeal because they reflect the "life lessons" we all struggle to learn when growing up - to pay attention, to get along with your neighbors, to use your natural abilities, to take time to laugh. Of course, these stories didn't appear out of thin air and the book includes insightful background on the historical context of these classic African American tales and their even-earlier African origins. The only way the publishers could have improved upon this well-done project would have been to offer a cassette or cd/book read-along package. That would have allowed readers the pleasure of following along as Karima Amin brings to life these charming oral tradition folk tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brer Rabbit - An Exposure to the Legacy of African America
As the parent of an African-American child, it is very important that I expose my daughter to the richness of her legacy - Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends has assisted in this exposure. Karima Amin has compiled a vast variety of interesting, comical, and spirited stories that were once shared among my ancestors - my appreciation cannot be expressed. I read the collection to my daughter practically every night (per her request - she's two) and there is no book that makes me feel quite this proud. The stories are in the tradition of oral storytelling - teaching as well as entertaining. If you are interested in a book that performs these duties and keeps your children asking for more, then Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends is the book for you. The book is complete with the history of Brer Rabbit (an excellent, added feature) and is guaranteed to remain in your hands once your child has left your lap. Please - share these beautiful words with your children!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a very funny and interesting.
My name is Edward Welch, I read the book about Brer Rabbit and Friends while I was sitting in a speical place. It made me laugh because Brer Rabbit was always trying to fool people. He always played jokes on people, but he got caught.

I learn a lesson to always be careful because you can get into alot of trouble by fooling others. We should always helping and share with others.

I want to know if you are going to write another book soon?
I am sharing my book with my friends. They like it very much. One of my friends mother said she is going to get it for a present.

Please keep writing books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Home for a Bunny Forever!
Now at 25 years old I am in the process of living in a new place and finding a new home. I cannot help but recite in my head over and over the words of Margret Wise Brown as the Bunny. A home for a bunny, a home of his own.... My father read this story to me every night before bed as a child and I cannot wait to share its lessons with my future children. I know I will forever remember what it taught me! The beautiful illustrations, the catchy rhymes, and the wonderful moral of the story! A treasure~

5-0 out of 5 stars Home again, home again
What a dear, sweet book. There are very few books I read as a child that I read again for the next generation, but I think we're on the THIRD copy of "Home For a Bunny" because it's read (and slept with) so often.
The illustrations are glorious - simple but colorful - they tell the story but don't get in its way. This helps the book work for children as young as 1 1/2 and as old as 5. The book is "only" about a bunny looking for a home and all the homes and friends he meets while he's looking. But isn't that what we're all doing - trying to find a safe, warm and happy place?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is as good, or better, than I remembered it.
This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I even bought a book to have in reserve BEFORE I got married.

Margaret Wise Brown has put together a rhythmic, engaging story about a bunny that seeks for its own place. As the story progresses there are lessons that can be learned and taught about changes of the seasons, and where animals live and what they do.

I like the pictures, the story, the whole ball of wax. We have read this book over and over to our children. When it resurfaces from the bottom of a stack of books it still gets read through a couple of times -- by popular demand!

5 stars all the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gentle, hope-inspiring story, beautifully illustrated
Home for a Bunny is a gem, both beautifully written and illustrated. Its gentle rhythm is smooth, great for reading aloud, and reminds one of the journey the bunny is taking: "Down the road and down the road he went. He was going to find a home of his own; a home for a bunny, a home of his own, under a rock, under a stone, under a log, or under the ground. Where would a bunny find a home?" The illustrations are by Garth Williams, lending the story extra beauty and realism. (This same man illustrated the Little House on the Prairie books.)

HFAB is also a rarity in baby books in that it has a recognizable plot, with scenes and dialogue. This gives parents a chance to practice their storytelling skills. I enjoy using different voices for the characters (e.g., a low, low voice for the frog, and a nasal one for the groundhog). Plus, having a plot helps develop the child's ability to follow a sequence of events.

And for the crowning praise--it is my 2-year old's favorite book. As soon as we finish reading it, he asks to hear it again, and again, and again. How can a book get any better than that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Home For a Bunny is a Classic!
Home for a Bunny should be a part of every child's library. This was the first book I learned to read and 25 years later I am buying it for my new baby girl. The colorful pictures, rhythmic text, and the loveable ending are unforgettable. Home for a Bunny is a classic! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
My 9 month old adores this book. It has really bright colors and the touch and feel pictures are really a nice size so he is immediately drawn to them where other books seem to have a small touch and feel picture. I would definitely buy this book for a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my son's all-time favorites
This is such a great book. The story is sweet, and the touch and feel part has been a big hit with my son for months....most children's books shouldn't be taken too literally. (Duh!) In THIS book, Sam is debating about what stuffed animal to take to bed with him. But, in the end . . . well, I won't spoil it for you. I cannot imagine anyone NOT liking this Story. It is adorable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story!
On his way to bed, Sam the bunny, searches for a friend to help him fall asleep, and says, "With brave, furry Tiger, I won't be afraid of anything." The reader sees a large, orange-FURRY tiger with black stripes, and Sam who is dressed in SOFT, blue pajamas is carrying a teddy bear.

The story continues with Sam climbing on a blue-WRINKLED Elephant's back so he can touch the stars. Then he thinks about an orange-FUZZY Monkey, a yellow-FEATHERED Parrot, and a Crocodile's green-ROUGH back, but in the end decides a hug from Mama is best of all - red-CRIMPED, paper dress.

The illustrations are simply drawn, and brightly colored for a strong visual contrast; in addition, the animals are large, providing ample space for touching and feeling. My only objection to giving "Sweet Dreams, Sam" five stars is due to the taxing prose. When reading to children a rhythmic cadence facilitates better listening, and holds interest for longer periods, i.e. the reason Dr. Seuss's books are classics and nursery rhymes still exist. At any rate, the story is sweet and the "touch-and-feel" effect fascinates children.

Oh, as far as a previous posters comments concerning the crocodile page - I wouldn't want my son to play with Tigers, Elephant's, Monkey's, Parrots, or Crocodiles. The purpose of this book is to spark children's imaginations with creative thought, teach colors, animal recognition, and sooth them to "Sweet Dreams." I am sorry she missed the point. One-year and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get little readers attention
My eight month old son loves this book. He enjoys putting his tiny fingers on the furry tiger, shiny elephant, and scratchy crocodile. The pictures are bright and fun and it's a very interactive book for young babies. This is our favorite book to read together.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, but...
Sweet Dreams, Sam, with its colorful drawings and "childfriendly" pages will appeal to any small child. The book's short and imaginative text makes, for the most part, great bedtime reading. However, "stars" had to be taken away, in my opinion, because of the crocodile page. Do we want to tickle our small child's imagination with the thought of stretching out on a crocodile's back or playing with the snout of such a beast? I discarded the book because one of the first 10 lessons for my child's life is to instill a fright of the dangerous crocodile/alligator. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Bedtime Book!
We received this book as a gift when my 3 year-old son was born. It has been a family favorite ever since, and now we read it to my 1 year-old daughter, who loves the butterflies. No matter how many times we've read it, my husband and I both get misty when Nicholas curls up in his hollow tree!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a have to have!
When my 14 year old daughter was little, this was the book she had to have read to her when she went to bed. It was read to her so many times, that by the time she was 3 she had the whole story memorized - and many people thought she could already read! Then, it became the staple for my son. Nine years later, I'm expecting my third child, and have to find a new copy of this book for this baby as it's become a family tradition to read all about Nicholas and his adventures.

¡Excelente!

Me gusta el libro. Aprendo español con me niño y este libro nos está ayudando.

I like the book. I am learning Spanish with the little boy I look after and this book is helping us. We know the story in English, and now we are learning it in Spanish. I like it better when we have two separate books - one in English and one in Spanish then when we have one book with both languages, because it then we don't "cheat" and look at the English. It also lets us have a small amount of "immersion" time when we only speak the new language - even if it's only for 5 or 10 min.

2-0 out of 5 stars What is this??
I would not recommend this book to any child. After reading it several times I still don't get it. It's like it's written in another language! The author should learn how to speak proper english before writing a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a heart warming tale that is wonderful for any age.
I think that it is wonderful to have this book in spanish. I loved the pictures and the tale was one that expressed the love of a mother for a child. Another good book, also by Margaret Wise Brown, is Goodnight Moon (Buenas Noches, Luna). Both books feature the wonderful charaters of rabbits in personified situations. ... Read more

After years of dreaming of planting a garden, Mr. McGreely finally takeshoe and watering can in hand and makes his dream come true. Unfortunately forhim (but luckily for readers), this is not the happily-ever-after part of thestory. Late one night, three hungry bunnies appear: "Tippy-tippy-tippy, Pat!Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!" The next morning finds our farmer gnashing his teethover the gnawed sprouts. So he builds a small wire fence. That night... "Muncha!Muncha! Muncha!" So Mr. McGreely builds a tall wooden wall. You get the idea.Young readers will hang on every word until they find out, once and for all, whowill win the battle of the broccoli.

Packed with repetitive and onomatopoeic phrases, Candace Fleming's tale of managainst nature will keep kids giggling--it may even inspire them to chomp on afew carrots themselves! G. Brian Karas's lively illustrations in gouache andpencil are full of visual wit, as the audacious "twitch-whiskers" patientlywatch Mr. McGreely at his seemingly futile endeavors. 5-0 out of 5 stars Who's Got the Veggies.....
"For years Mr. McGreely dreamed of planting a garden. He dreamed of getting his hands dirty, of growing yummy vegetables, and of gobbling them all up..." This was finally the year. He bought his supplies, and got to work preparing his garden and planting his seeds. "...I'll soon fill my tummy with crisp, fresh veggies." Unfortunately, he was not the only vegetable lover in the neighborhood. That night three hungry bunnies found Mr McGreely's garden and made themselves at home. "Tippy- Tippy- Tippy, Pat! Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!" The next morning, when Mr McGreely saw the damage, he was angry. So he built a nice wire fence around his garden to keep the bunnies out. But would this simple solution work..... Candace Fleming has written a wonderful chain of events story with a clever and surprising twist at the end, that's sure to keep little ones giggling with each page turn. Her delightful text, full of energy and marvelous sound effects, is enhanced by Brian Karas' bold, expressive, and humorous artwork. Youngsters will revel in all the fun as they watch the battle between gardener and bunnies escalate to the ridiculous, from simple, small wire fence, to taller wooden fence, to moat, and finally maximun security tower complete with barbed wire and lights. Perfect for kids 3-7, Muncha, Muncha, Muncha is a rip roarin', manic, crowd pleaser, and a picture book children will beg to read over and over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Three hungry bunnies.
How does Mr. McGreely keep three hungry bunnies away from his garden? Well, in MUNCHA MUNCHA MUNCHA he finds an answer -- or does he? This book is just meant to be read aloud, as the repetitive words become fun sound effects. The colorful illustrations of the three bunnies are consistently drawn throughout, letting you follow them one at a time if you want. It's a short, oversized book. And it's really funny. Kids (recommended for ages 3-7 but you'll have just as much fun as they do) will want to hear it again and again for the sounds. Ham it up!

4-0 out of 5 stars great sound narrative
My 18 month old son likes this book and the repetitive nature of "tippy tippy tippy pat" is great - when we get to that part, my son always starts saying "tippy tippy tippy..."

The illustrations are lovely too and we use it as a game to find the bunnies (they hide in some of the pictures). Overall, it's a nice book and a nice break from all the Dr. Seuss we read (although we love him too!).

4-0 out of 5 stars It is I, captain vegetable...
At last! A book that secretly promotes the benefits of "yummy vegetables" without drumming the lesson into the heads of innocent children! Candace Fleming has penned a fun frolicsome tale of bunnies, gardeners, and ingenious methods of munching. In this tale, Mr. McGreely (why is it that bunnies always run into conflicts with men sporting Irish or Scottish names?) decides to fill his tiny backyard plot with vegetables of his own growing. As his veggies grow, however, three inspired rabbits set about eating the delicious greens. The more complex Mr. McGreely's defenses grow (walls, moats, and eventually an enormous maximum security system that defies belief) the more adept the bunnies become at scaling, burrowing, and otherwise getting past the blockages.

It's a little amazing that Mr. McGreely even HAS any vegetables left at the end of the tale, if the bunnies are so doggone hungry. I half expected the moral of the story to disintegrate into some preachy morality tale where Mr. McGreely learns that walls may keep out the bunnies but they also keep out the sun and the veggies die. As it happens, veggies aren't particularly upset by walls, though it becomes clear that Mr. McGreely truly has built them in vain. This is really just a classic story of the little guys beating the big guy through style and cunning.

Candace Flemings text is jumpy and bouncy (just like the hares themselves). Here's a two page spread of the text accompanying pictures of bunnies swimming the moat, scaling the walls, and settling down to eat.

"Tippy-tippy-tippy, pat!
Dive-paddle, splash! Splash! Splash!
Dig-scrabble,
Scratch! Scratch! Scratch!
Spring-hurdle,
Dash! Dash! Dash!
Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!"

That's catchy stuff. Sadly, I wasn't as taken by G. Brian Karas's illustrations. They're cute enough, sure. Just not particularly grabbing. The three bunnies are fairly indistinguishable from one another, save for their different colored shirts. The pictures don't really detract from the reading but they don't add anything either. My advice is, come for the nice story and catchy phrases. Stay for the messages about carrots being nummy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Muncha Muncha noise & not much else
The flow of the book is very disjointed, jumping from narrative to sound effects with no explanation for the listener. So, younger children may not easily follow the story line without the reader stopping to explain that, "And the sun went down. And the moon came up. And - Tippy tippy tippy pat, Dive-paddle, Splash! Splash! Splash! Dig-scrabble, Scratch! Scratch! Scratch! spring-hurdle Dash! Dash! Dash! Muncha Muncha Muncha!" means that the rabbits tip-toed to the garden, jumped into a moat, swam across it, climbed over a wall, jumped over a fence and ate the vegetables. The illustrations are cute but again, (for younger listeners) don't lead the children through the story very well. It's an empty story with not much other than pesky rabbits and a weekend gardener who attempts to find new ways to keep the rabbits from eating his vegetables. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Presents another delightful sibling encounter
Max's room is a mess and Ruby wants to clean it; but Max has special ideas about his room - can he preserve his beloved but funky treasures? This presents another delightful sibling encounter.

4-0 out of 5 stars a valuable clean-up lesson
Wells does a good job again with this book about cleaning up. Max's sister wants him to clean up his room, but Max keeps rescuing items that she is wanting to throw away.

It's funny, and it's just as good as the other Max books.

It also teaches a valuable lesson about cleaning up.

Good for ages 2-7. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Max is at it again!!
A great book for Max and Ruby fans! It's not too long with just a few sentences on each page and the illustrations are great! It holds my 3 year olds attention all the way through and even gives the parents a chuckle when Max comes back with his own answer of "Because!!" (I'm sure that's just payback for all the times our kids have to hear that answer!) I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Max Enchants Again
We absolutely love the Max & Ruby books. Max's Christmas was one of last year's gifts to my toddler munchkins. They love it and they just can't get enough of Max and his bossy-but-loving sister, Ruby. Max's Christmas takes Max through the Christmas Eve bedtime preparations, with Ruby helping him brush his teeth and put on pajamas. "Why?" asks Max. "Because," says Ruby. Max wants to know why he can't stay up to see Santa and, after Ruby puts him to bed, he decides to take his blanket downstairs and just see for himself. Max falls asleep, Santa comes down the chimney (Santa is a bunny, of course), and Max wakes up. Santa tells Max to go back to sleep. Max asks, "Why?" Santa replies, "Because!"

Kids love this book because they identify so completely with Max, even kids who don't have bossy big sisters. Max's adventures mirror those of all little children who are trying to figure out their often confusing world. ... A full Max & Ruby library is one of the best ongoing gifts for pre-school children.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Max!
Rosemary Wells' Max and Ruby books are the best books for small children of all time, and Max's Christmas is the best of the best. The focus of the book is Max asking his older sister Ruby a thousand questions about Santa Claus that she can not answer (until, an exasperated Ruby finally screams BECAUSE! and refuses to answer any more questions). If you've dealt with any 2 to 4 year old at Christmas time, this will seem so real you won't be able to keep a straight face. It's just a pure delight.

The illustrations are more detailed, and the colors more interesting than in the Max board books. It's done in a way that the pictures all look bathed in candlelight, which creates a perfect atmosphere for the book. That's one of the things that makes this book even better than the other books in the series.

The recommendations for this book say it is for toddlers to pre-school children, but my kids continued to love it and want to hear it every year until they were about eight. My son loved it so much that I have him on tape reciting it by heart at age three.

If you have little ones to read to at Christmas, this is a must-have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Max's Santa FAQ
It's Christmas, and Ruby is trying to get her little brother Max ready for bed, and answer his questions about Santa. See what happens when Max has to see for himself. Fun book, because most of Max's dialog is made up of the questions toddler's ask 1,000 times a day, especially: "Why?"! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All is Wells'
Children's books -- and I mean the ones that we read to our children -- are most magical when their images simultaneously touch the imagination of the child and the heart of the parent. In this set of 3 short, marvellous books, Ms. Wells out-does all who have tried to accomplish that feat. The illustrations and text are perfect compliments. The stories are as humorous as they are touching. And, by the end of each little book, the frustrations and disappointments felt by these young bunnies, all dissipate in a very mystical, dream-like fashion (I feel like taking a snooze, myself). Bravo, Rosemary! ... Read more

In this irresistible book it's not just field mice that suffer Little Bunny Foo Foo's mischievous tricks, but woodchucks, foxes, & grizzly bears! And as LBFF's subjects grow so do his scooping methods, from lasso to tractor bucket to crane. All the while, LBFF takes his naughtiness to hyperbolic heights as the Good Fairy--hilariously rendered as a possum--points out the error of his wayward ways w/ humor & spunk. Painted in a warm, folksy style w/ vibrant colors & soft edges, Johnson strikes just the right balance between the joys of being bad & a tongue-in-cheek lesson in behavioral reform. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of fun
My barometer for a successful picture book is measured by this: If, when we get to the end of the book, the kids immediately say, "Read it again!", it's a good book. I read this one three times in a row before I was allowed to read another.

Little Bunny Foo Foo has always been a favorite song to act out (with a little bunny hand puppet)around my household but Johnson's interpretation and extension of the song is funny and delightful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book for any child or even Adult!
This is probably the best book I've ever read. It is about a girl named Anna who is forced to fled her country with her family in hopes of not being found by the Nazi's. And it shows the struggles and difficulties that Anna's family had to go through in battle of finding freedom. It is a very compelling story that takes place in World War II. And It will keep you wondering. I read this book when I was in 6th grade and never found it again. I am going to order it and I hope you all do. It is a very good book that teaches the reader about WWII and is still appropreate for the young reader. It is Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written
Anna only knows she is Jewish because her father says so. However it is enough to force the family to flee Germany (1933) due to the on coming of the Nazi regime. She will travel to several countries learning the language and staying one step ahead of the spreading Nazi influence. In her travels she learns of many concepts which include the confiscation of her "Pink Rabbit."
Many books unintentionally talk down to children. Not this book it looks you right in the eye. Anna still maintains the innocence of her youth. But the problems and dealing with people can happen at any age.
The story is told from the perspective of Anna. And not too surprisingly it parallels that of the author and illustrator Judith Kerr who was forced to leave Germany in 1933.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Good ending.
With THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, you had the story of a family who chose to hide, but in this book you have the story of a family who did the smart thing early in Hitler's rise to power. Anna's father was a writer and a Jew. Warned that his passport was about to be confiscated, he got out of Germany. Anna and her brother Max find this out only after he's gone. That begins their own preparations to leave. Two weeks later they're in Switzerland, the first new country in Anna's life. The book is very well written and semi-autobiographical. The author herself was forced to leave Germany in 1933 (her father was a drama critic). Presented from 9-year-old Anna's point-of-view, it has tantalizing glimpses of what was going on in Europe. Several overheard conversations both alarm and intrigue Anna. Her own efforts to excel in school and fit in, first in Switzerland and then in France, are very good. This is tame enough for children to read, but informative for adults who know more history.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Grown- Ups
'Pink Rabbit' may be exciting and fun for nine-year olds but for grown ups the interest level comes up short. Dont waste your time with this book which is terribly boring and consists only of Anna switching from school to school.I would not recommend this book to anyone over the age of eleven or anyone with advanced literature experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting book for all ages.
This all starts when 9 year old Anna gets rushed out of Germany with her whole family because her father is wanted dead or alive by Hitler. She has to leave all she knows well for a country which is unknown to her, Switzerland. Living in a hotel for a couple of years with no money to spend, Anna and her family move to France where they have to live in a small and dusty flat. Anna has to go to a French school even though she does not know a single word of french. After struggling for 2 years, Anna can finally speak fluently in French but just when she's starting to enjoy France, she moves to England after her father's movie script is bought by an English company. Stuck in poverty for 6 years, she finally gets to have a better life with her family. This book is very enjoyable and I recommend it to any people, any age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps P.J. Funnybunny should just stay being a bunny
"It's Not Easy Being a Bunny" for P.J. Funnybunny who has to eat cooked carrots every day, has far too many brothers and sisters, and has very big ears. So he decides that instead of being a bunny he is going to be something else and leaves him to find something better to be. Now, mom and dad already know what lesson P.J. Funnybunny is going to learn when he goes out into the world and tries to be some other sort of an animal, but we can certainly appreciate how author Marilyn Sadler and illustrator Roger Bollen make the lesson sneak up on beginning readers.

First P.J. decides to be a bear and so he goes to live with the bears. But then he discovers that sleeping all winter long is not exactly exciting. So he decides that he wants to be a bird and goes to live with the birds. Of course the pattern repeats itself as he finds that being a bird, or a possum, or a pig, is not as much fun as he might have thought. In going through this cycle of events Sadler and Bollen do something that works very well: there is always a double-page spread of P.J. being welcomed by the other animal and for a moment young readers can believe the bunny is happy. But then they turn the page and see the problem that P.J. has discovered in trying to live a new life as a beaver or a moose.

The reason this works so well is not only that it develops a pattern of repetition but also that even beginning readers anticipate not only what is going to happen next but why P.J. is going to be less than satisfied. Sometimes it is easy to guess what the problem is going to be, as when P.J. decides to be skunk, but what problem do you think he is going to be when he decides to be a moose? As a result, "It's Not Easy Being a Bunny" not only teaches a lesson about being happy with who they are, it encourages young readers to think ahead and anticipate what will happen next as a result of the simple but effective way this Beginner Book tells its story.
