Book Description

CATALOG COPY DESCRIPTION:"Mama, what is snow?" asks a curious little bunny on a crisp winter day. Just as every snowflake is unique, so are the names used to describe snow and its ever-changing nature.Sometimes snow is like the white wings of butterflies, other times it's like a clever magician who makes the landscape disappear!

Poet Judi K. Beach's first picture book was inspired by Inuit culture (which has a very precise terminology to describe different kinds of snow), as well as her childhood memories of winters spent in Kentucky and Ohio.Loretta Krupinski breathtakingly renders Judi's sparse, lyrical text in paintings of serene landscapes and bustling borders. This young picture book is perfect for curling up to and sharing on any snowy, winter day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Magic of Metaphor
When snow becomes a magician or a trickster, a family member or prayer, you have entered the metaphorical world of Judi K. Beach. A wonderful template for a winter "game" when snow keeps you and the kids housebound. Ask them, "What would you call this snow?" and hold onto your pens when they answer! Wonderful illustrations by Krupinski keep the very young interested.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERY PAGE IS A DELIGHT
I hate snow, but I love this little book. I love the cat
sitting in the window sill, I love the barnyard scenes, the
geese in the corn, the fire in the fireplace, the moon glistening,
the snowman, the sled on the porch, the scarecrow in the field, and the bunnies having fun outdoors in
the snow and inside in the cozy warm house. It reminds me so
much of my own youth on the farm. My granddaughter loves it too.
We read it nearly every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly joyful celebration of winter season wonder
Beautifully illustrated with the artwork of Loretta Krupinski, Names For Snow is a delightful picture book inspired by Inuit culture, as well as author Judi Beach's fond and personal childhood memories. Inuit Native Americans spend so much of their lives in winter that it is said they have over fifty names for snow. In Names For Snow, a mother rabbit shows her child the many names and sides of this wintry phenomenon, from Harmonica when it whistles through the trees, to Kitten when it sleeps in the crook of a window, to Trickster when it appears on April first, and more. Names For Snow is commended for young readers as being a thoroughly joyful celebration of winter season wonder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kat's Kind Review
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter was an excellent book. I would recommend it to people of all ages even though it was s targeted towards younger children. The book was about four little rabbits that all wanted to go down the lane or into the fields. The only place that they were not allowed to go was Mr. McGregor's garden. Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail were good little bunnies and went down the lane to the field. But Peter was very mischievous. He went to Mr. McGregor's garden!! When he got into the garden he saw the best sight of his life. There was food galore! He started to eat and eat and eat. He couldn't stop. Then Mr. McGregor found him and chased him through the garden! Peter had many obstacles that stood in his way! Did he make it out safe? Read the book and you will find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Young Toddlers
I purchased this book for our daughter when she was about 6 months old but she wasn't at all interested in it, unlike 95% of our other purchases. Then at about 12 months she picked it out for me to read it to her, and it has increasingly become a favorite. I think the reason she didn't like it earlier on was, ironically, the same reason I readily purchased it - the beautiful watercolor illustrations. While they are very beautiful, they are somewhat muted resulting in a look that blurs all of the detail together. Of course, this is just a guess. At any rate, she now very much enjoys this book, and anticipates the action, such as Peter sneezing, or the "scr-r-ritch, scratch" of a hoe. Board books with a storyline are somewhat more difficult to find than the counting, color, alphabet, opposites, etc. kind, and my daughter has always definitely enjoyed stories. Additionally, this book teaches us there are repercussions for our actions, but in a tone that is mild and appropriate for young toddlers. If this is what you're looking for, and you're not looking for storybooks for a younger baby, this would be an excellent choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful...with a very strong and urgent message
This book should be on every expectant parents list!

It is beautifully illustrated and written in simple language, yet it carries a powerful message. Reading is a wonderful way of sharing a part of our busy lives with our children, and it only "costs twenty minutes and a library card". Rosemary Wells also includes a two-page message to parents at the end of the book that tells us how and why we should should reserve a special time and place for reading activities with our children.

The message in this book will stay with you long after you finish it...It can serve as a daily reminder and as a daily source of encouragement as we lure our children into the magical world of reading.

A truly wonderful book....

5-0 out of 5 stars Good bedtime story!
My Mommy read this book to me for a bedtime story. It's cute! I like the pictures and I like the part where the Mother bunny reads all the little stories to her little bunny. I think it's a good story for little children. My cousin Andrew, who is two years old, would really like it a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for expectant mothers and newlyweds
My kids brought me this book in the library. Since then, I've given it at baby showers and as wedding presents. It is more of a reminder to parents what our duty and responsibility to our children is. Besides, the kids love it too. Mine had it memorized and quote it to me when I tell them I'm too busy to read right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great baby shower gift!
I love this book. It is a book written in child-language with great illustrations that any child will love. But, the book is really for the adult reading it. It stresses the importance of reading to children under the age of 2. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars COLORFUL AND IMAGINATIVE
Creator of that sparkling phenomenon The Rainbow Fish and the Hopper series, Swiss artist/story teller Marcus Pfister has now crafted Hopper's Treetop Adventure (North-South Books, $15.95). When Hopper, the inquiring arctic hare, yearns for hazelnuts, his mother tells him that hares don't usually eat nuts because rabbits can't climb trees. Don't be too sure of that.

Pfister's radiant pastels bring Hopper's woodland adventure to beguiling life. Ages 5-8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations
The illustrations in this book are beautiful. The story is good with animals that do not frighten most children. My 3 year old daughter wants us to read it again and again. Pickin peas. Land on my knees! sings a pesky rabbit as he merrily eats his way through the pea patch Little Girl has planted. But when Little Girl snatches him up and takes him home to put in a box until pea season is over, the rabbit is soon singing a new tune as he plans his escape. With a nod to Brer Rabbit, Pickin Peas is based on two folktales collected in Alabama and Virginia at the end of the last century. The lively storytelling voice of Margaret Read MacDonald, matched with Pat Cummingss bright, bold pictures, makes this funny battle-of-wits tale perfect to tell out loud, letting everyone share in the fun of chanting its rhymic refrain!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful day and/or bedtime story for parents & child!
My three and a half year old and I both love Cowboy Bunnies. The illustrations are charming and the rhymes and daily events hold the attention of our three year old son more than most books. In fact, we're going to center his upcoming birthday around the Cowboy Bunnies and this will be the other children's giveaway.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Sweet a Bedtime Story as You Will Find
Cowboy Bunnies is written in a gentle, rocking rhyme with musical accompaniment perfectly suited to the romanticized ideal many children have of western life. This song-story is one of the few I never tired of reading or hearing, even though I tape-recorded it to play four times in a row. My daughter learned about cowboy and cowgirl costumes, frontier life, cowboy slang, and musical instruments. The end of the story puts cowboy bunnies to bed as the music slows from gently romping to a sleepy lullaby. I consider this book a masterpiece for children ages 2 to 6.

I thought that this lovely, light little book was excellent-the kind I enjoy as well as my kids and grandkids. The story about a day in the life of a cowboy bunnies is told in rhymes, that are fun and easily remembered. It is a sweet book. ... Read more
