4-0 out of 5 stars Elements of Writing
I believe that this is one of the best educational writing instruction tools that I have seen in our school system. The book describes step by step the elements of writing in the English language. There are interesting articles and stories to keep the child interested while learning the basics. There are also enough excercises to practice what they are learning. The book explores punctuation, rules for capitalization, usage of the language and how to easily diagram a sentence. Excellent glossary with additional information and resources. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars the book has too many illustrations; bad photographs
Though there are many worthwhile photographs in this book, I felt that many of them were indistinct to my 14-month old child. For example, a photograph of a pillow with pairs of animals on it, simply did not look like a "pillow" and a tube of toothpaste or container of talcum powder without a label or any coloring (re: a generic label) simply does not look like the article trying to be delineated. Also, the illustrations would have better left out, in my opinion--I believe that photographs of real objects should be maintained throughout the book. The actual photos of real animals in the "At the zoo" page, for example, look foolish beside the inferior "illustrations." Surely, photographs could have been obtained for animals such as tigers, buffalo, penguins, etc.

Also, the book seems like it's trying too hard at times. Unnecessary inclusions seemed quite prevalent, as if the "voluminous index" was the aim rather than, simply, a picture book for 0-3 year old children.

Some of the unnecessary inclusions include: cotton swabs (especially the way they are photographed), barette (looks atypical), soap frog (looks like a green frog toy), bubbles, lawnmover (photo would have been great, but illustration is not good), canes for the garden (they look like sticks of incense), traffic circle (another bad illustration), cygnet (swan=okay; cygnet=not okay, too sophisticated), no school bus (in " things that move"), tidal pool (bad illustration and unnecessary addition), "weather" illustrations behind children and bad illustrations re: "seasons"; also, "Actions" section and others with pictures of children doing things are too "chock-full" to be effective; etc.

Again, some photos are nice and my son truly enjoys the book--I'm just voicing some things that I would have omitted and/or done differently for the overall aesthetics of the book. In the end, it seems "overly-ambitious" and some photographs are taken from too far away (the plate of rice is indistinct as is the floor mat, among other items). Also, the colors of "everyday objects" are too colorful to be recognized as objects that one might have in their own home (red and/or black telephone, TV, teapot, placemat, dustpan, mixing bowl, broom, to name a few). Also, the ham looks like it's a week old. Very unappetizing.

Other than all that, the book is quite good. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1000 vivid,colorful, photographs of words in a child's world
This book has been wonderful for our little girl who we adopted from Romania at age 3 1/2 years. She only spoke three words in Romanian. This book has helped her make sense of her new surroundings by seeing photgraphs and learning the words. She loves to find the foods, animals and toys that she likes and to name them. I would highly recommend this book for every child as well as second language learner. There is no guessing about what the pictures are as almost everything is real. The few drawings are very clear and understandable. There is a Spanish version that gives the Spanish and the English word. I am an elementary principal and I ordered multiples of this book for each of my kindergarten through second grade classrooms. 90% of our students have Spanish as a first language so it has been great to share with our families. Our parents use it as a reference, too, to learn English!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Must Buy This Book
I bought this book for my first child in 1995 and now my second child loves it just as much. EVERY page is taped up because they looked at it so much and both were very young so they would tear the pages as well. They both were probably 7-8 months old when they first fell in love with it. The revised edition is similar but yet very different; it is definately going under my tree this Christmas! Worth every penny and then some!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Young minds love it!
We have had the book since our first boy was born. It has been literally torn to shreads since he has read it more than any other book. I am continually amazed as he pulls it out of the pile again and again to look at all the pictures. Kids love details and he notices them all. The book is full of intricate pictures and he and his brother love to pore over it for a long time. I came online just now to buy another copy since ours has lasted only three years and he still loves it. Maybe the publisher would consider a version made of rip-stop nylon?

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Word Book-Excellent Gift
This book is a fantastic book for a First or Second Year birthday gift...just right for those little minds learning so much and saying so much...I give this to all of my friends children. It is beautiful to boot. Enjoy! ... Read more

It's a great book.
And besides I love to study about ancient Egypt, it's just so interasting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I'm a dabbler in Ancient Egyptian history and this is a great buy. At under $15 I think it's a great deal considering it's hardcover and has a TON of full color pictures. It covers a wide array of topics from Geography to Pharoahs. The book is handsome enough to display on a coffee table, detailed enough to get a taste of ancient egypt, and still simple enough that it would make a terrific gift for a child of any age (I'm 23 and I think this book is fantastic).

Other topics include: daily life of the Egyptian (not just nobility!), tools, jewelry, mummification, writing system, agriculture, textiles, food, religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness:Ancient Egypt
I think that Eyewitness:Ancient Egypt is an amazing book. I liked how they wrote about how the Egyptians built their pyramids. If you are thinking about reading this book you should, because you will learn alot. Belive me, it's a very interesting book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for ALL kids
Use this book (alone or in conjunction with a book like "Baby Signs") to communicate with your baby long before they can speak. We started signing when my son was 8 mos old. He learned the signs very quickly and being able to make us understood what he wanted eliminated temper tantrums almost immediately - until he was 2 that is! When he started to talk, he continued signing for a while but then stopped using them on his own. I HIGHLY recommend signing with ALL babies - regardless of whether or not they have developmental issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Cheerful picture with illustrations. Highly recommended. My daughter love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am trying to teach my developmentally challenged son sign language - as well as teach his grandparents and father. This book really helped all of them and kept his attention while we read it. It is simple and easy to understand. Just what we needed!

5-0 out of 5 stars This one is a favorite at our house!
My two year old learned to sign these words quickly and enjoys reading this book over and over again. It has clear illustrations of signs and attractive pictures of common nouns and verbs in a young child's world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and simplistic, a great starter book
I have a toddler with speech disorder and use signs to agument communication. the easy to understand diagrams and simple description of how to make the sign was extremely useful to me. My son enjoyed the wonderful illustrations. I am using this book and its companion "More Simple Signs" to aid his teacher and classmates. Cindy Wheeler should be commended on her beautiful books. Only a parent of a "special" child understands how issues should be presented. These books are extremely useful ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative and Fun Vocabulary Builder
By weaving vocabulary words into the classic story of "The Wizard of Oz," Mark Phillips enables readers to greatly increase their vocabulary in a fun way, while eliminating the drudgery so commonly associated with the standard approaches. Because you're engrossed in the story, it's easy to forget you're actually learning.

An aspect of this book which makes it especially user-friendly is that all definitions for the vocabulary words (which are bold-faced and footnoted) can quickly be found at the bottom of the page they appear on. This is in sharp contrast to other books of this type which force the reader to constantly turn to the back of the book, something no one wants to do when they're in the midst of reading.

The definitions, themselves, are extremely helpful as they are always clear and concise, and oftentimes witty and educational. (You'll learn a lot of the history you forgot just by reading them!) And whenever there might be a question, pronunciation is made clear.

This book is great for those who are studying for the SAT's and would rather not rotely memorize lists of vocabulary words, or for anyone who simply wants to build their vocabulary in an absorbing and fun way. Most importantly, having the words already in context makes remembering them a whole lot easier. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone!
Mark Phillips uses a universallly familiar tale in "The Wizard of Oz", and retells it substituting challenging vocabulary words, for the language the book was originally written in. This is performed masterfully, without losing any of the context of the original story, while still instituting a new verbal element in almost every sentence. This unique method creates a lasting effect, allowing vocabulary to seamlessly enter your psyche. Mark calls on his own incisive wit on the bottom of each page, where he defines each word that has been added, and goes on to add yet another memorable example of the words usage. This creates a doubly indelible impression, allowing for immediate delivery of new words into your everyday language. Impress your friends, ace your SAT's, or just enjoy reading on a higher level, as this book truly carries your language mastery to the next level. A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best vocabulary book available
I've seen many vocabulary books -- those that contain lists of thousands of words, and those that imitate Phillips' technique. The imitators are all (as of this writing) cr*p. Many of them are quite useful if you regard "book", "chair", "indirect", etc. to be vocabulary words. I hope that Phillips comes out with another book of more advanced words for the ultimate GRE preparation.

The only problem I have with the book is that it needs to be larger. Sometimes the words come at you so quickly that they lie adjacent to one another -- in some cases three at a time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea
This book is a excellent idea and it works! The only comment I have is that sometimes many similar words are used at the same point in the story (e.g. listless, enervating, langour). This makes the reading not so interesting and the definitions confusing since they're so similar. Another example, "trite cliche". Perhaps this is the authors intention, to group the synonyms. But maybe greater separation of the words will help the reader better appreciate the nuances of their meanings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works like magic
I purchased The Wizard of Oz nearly two months ago and it has given me fabulous results. Every day, whether I hear it on TV or in person, I recognize at least one of my new words. My vocabulary has extended tremendously and I could not be happier. I previously tried many methods. I even tried reading the entire thesaurus! Yet my vocabulary did not seem to make any progress. This book works like magic. It would be great if schools all over the nation became aware of this and bought them for every student. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Italian!
I have been searching for an easy way to teach my daughter, age 4 who has grown up only speaking english, my native Italian. I have tried various computer programs, books and tapes, and other teaching methods. All were rather boring and unhelpful, my daughter soon lost interest. This system is wonderful! The lessons are interesting and fun. They are blended wonderfully with songs and activities that keep a child's attention. I highly recommend this program. I do recommend that someone in the family practice with the child and participate with them while they listen. This is by far the best children's language packet I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging and informative program for learning Italian.
My son and I enjoyed the music, activities and games provided in this learning program. The use of children's voices for the cassette was very effective. A great starting point for both children and adults alike.

It would be great to have this program on video.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't complain
This book rocks!!! It's really cool! Definitely a must-have for any Charmed fans. First of all, the appearance is cool, it has great pictures, nice printing, easy to read fonts.
It contains so much information about the show including episode guides, history, the characters, and interview with casts and crews!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best First Only Charmed Companion
The book is great, it has eveything you need, except color photos. It has the episode guide, character profiles, the spells used in tht show defenitons of terms, evey good witch's name, interviews and biographies of the charcters. Also for those of you in the dark side, it has the Grimore(think that's how you spell it), the name of every evil person, and some of the Grimore's spells. There is a speacial intro by Aaron Spelling. Just buy it and find out more, it's the best and only OFFICIAL Charmed companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect book
I am obsessed with the charmed show!! This book almost a perfect companion. I am also a Prue fan, and it did not have a interview with Shannon. It also did not have a very good review of when Prue died. Otherwise, this book is really awesome! I loved the spell part of the book. The "demon-dictionary" was another highlight! I gave this book 5 stars because other than some minor glitches, I would reccomend this book to anyone in a heartbeat.

Charmed at heart

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful !!!
Well, I have spent a really long time waiting for a book of Charmed like this !!! It's a treasure, a Bible of every kind of informations we could expect for about the show : the démons, all the spells until the 5'th saison, interviews... and several things moreover. Besides, it's a very confortable book to read since there is a great distribution of all the chapters. for the fans of the show, you should buy this book!! I swear you won't be dissapointed!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best foreign language program for YOUNG children I've seen.
I teach preschool children French in my home and have not seen an easier method for children who do not yet read. Though designed for beginning readers it is easily adapted to non-readers. Parents who do not speak the language can learn along with their child. The program comes with an activity book children can draw, color and cut in, along with 3 cassettes. Two cassettes are the lesson plans (1-10), and the third is an instructional guide for parents.

My only disappointment is that there is not another level after the child completes the book.

We also have the German for Children(it comes in several languages). We spend time in the evening doing the program with our 4 year old son. I soon realised that my 2 year old knew all of the songs and was responding to questions directed at his older brother in German. They love the Super Cat cartoon.

Note: A young child can not do the lessons without help from an adult.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing
I was surprised to find out that this book doesn't really come with a cassette for the kids to listen to. I talked with some customer service people and found that there may be quite a few different versions of this book, and unfortunatly not all of these versions are currently available. But other than that this book is still a pretty good french instructor for young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've seen.
Our family has a small library of French materials for children and this is the one my children enjoy using the most. The songs are catchy and understandable (many we have are hard for me to understand what they are singing and I have had 6 years of French language). There is a good mix of activities and games that reinforce what they are learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent program to introduce children to French.
This program is a wonderful balance between written and spoken French, with cute songs and games which entertain children as they learn. Most notable is that the program is presented by a native French speaker, not a speaker of French as a second language. I highly recommend this program, especially for (but not limited to) children who can read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible Resource For Those Dealing with AD(H)D Student
This book is an invaluable aide for parents, educators, and professionals dealing with the challenges faced by AD(H)D students in school. It is a book that can be given directly to students as well. Written in a clear, visually appealing format, it presents worksheets and quick exercises that guide the late grade school, middle school or high school student to an understanding of how this disorder affects their ability to learn. It provides information such as how to choose and adopt various study techniques that will help children with AD(H)D become successful students. It coaches students in using active study techniques to remember what they read, or to develop written reports. Students are not resistant to using the concepts because of how they are presented and is a book that has application to non ADHD students as well. I highly recommend this workbook and have found it much more much more useful that the "Putting on the Brakes" book by the same authors. Of all the self help books I have lent out to people, this is one that people use so much they forget to return it! I just keep buying more copies because I don't want to be without the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It makes sense to my students!
"Putting on the Break" has helped several of my students/clients understand what is really happening when they can not stop. One student's mom said, "This is the first time I see Laura interested in a book, any book. She explained why she has trouble paying attention like a pro. Thanks." The book gives the children a perspective they can relate to. Adults can be too wordy, the books helps them "see" and "feel" about ADHD. Thanks for making the book available in Spanish. We need more for the Spanish- speaking population. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Manual for the AP Comp Sci Exam in Java
Maria Litvin has done an extraordinary job of putting together the new "Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java". This review manual, which has enough detail to double as a text book, has everything students need to focus on prior to taking the exam. It addresses everything in the ETS Java subset that students should have studied during the school year and has outstanding multiple choice and free response practice exam questions. The tests even include questions about the Java Marine Biology Simulation program which students need to know for the exam. Her web site also includes the 2003 C++ free response questions, which have been translated into Java. If you are searching for a great review manual with great practice questions, this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definetly Better then Barron's Guide for Review
The Barron's giude is very nice, but it basically reteaches evrything for the student, which is only good if you have the typicall AP Computer Science teacher, like the ones in the Reviews : My teacher was horribale, she doesn't know anything about Java/C++/Pascal. She only knew about some other language and never assigned homework and was just horrible. If that is your teacher then get barron's, but if your school is respectable enough to actually try to get a good Computer Science teacher then get this book, it actually reviews. Another plus over barron's, this book actually has tips and an introduction to the test, Barron's only has 3 pages compared to a chapter with Litvin's guide on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java
I haven't read this book, so I am rating it on how I think the book would go, judging from the web-site. I am just saying that if you can only get one book to prepare for the AP Computer Science test get this one since this isn't available in any libraries in the U.S., or anywhere but the other AP Computer Science books are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evene better than their C++ version
I used their C++ version (ISBN 0965485366) for several years and my students loved it. This Java version is completely rewritten for the new exams in Java but in the same to-the-point style. Very complete review with four practice exams. It is slightly bigger than the C++ version: the Marine Biology case study chapter is included (used to be online). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and resource for teachers!
A sales rep gave me a copy of this book at a summer teacher workshop last year and I will not give this book up for anything! It has been a very valuable and useful tool for me to reference on countless occasions this past school year. The book has great illustrations, tables and an almanac. The charts are colorful and easy to read. I highly recommend this book for any teacher in the intermediate grades. It will not only help you keep your lessons fresh and make your planning time easier, it will also enable you to be an "expert" in mathematics in just a quick glance. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Old fashioned
I thought the language was very adult and archaic - some of the definitions might have been right in the 1950s or 1960s but are not appropriate now - see the definitions for colored or hippy. I would not buy another MW dictionary after seeing this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good dictionary
I had originally gotten this book for my 8yr old but it was a little too advanced for her. The text is small, more like an adults dictionary as opposed to a child's dictionary. The definitions are not easy for younger children to read on their own. It is however very clear so she did understand the definitions after having them read to her. All in all it is a very good choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every household needs this book!
This is a very concise, yet thorough look at our language. It starts with the history of languages, the percentage of the world population that speak the most common languages, a diagram of Indo-European languages and which one evolved from what. It defines terms like "semantics", "phonetics", "phonemics", "phonics", "morphemics", etc. It gives nine different alphabets, including sign language, smoke signals and morse code. It gives examples of Hebrew and Japanese. There are some very informative drawings of the mouth, and how sounds are made.

And that's just the first 15 pages.

If you want to know what the "CAT" in CAT scan stands for, or why we write "please R.S.V.P." on party invitations, you can find the answers here.

This book is very nicely laid out, easy to read and aesthetic, with nice pictures and lots of color. There is just tons of information in this book, but it's not weighty or difficult to understand. Unlike a typical textbook, one piece can be understood at a time - one doesn't need to start from the beginning and read all the way through it.

I knew this book would be useful for my kids, but when I read the page that completely - and simply - defined "past perfect tense", "present perfect tense" and "future perfect tense", I was sold. I immediately called my friend who is the head teacher at a K-12 school, and told her she needed to get this book! (Turns out she already has it, and uses it all the time with her students.)

I can't say enough good things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome English Reference
As a home schooler I continually search for quality books at an affordable price. This book was an excellent find. The amount of information included here is exceptional. One look at the table of contents, I was sold. It covers topics from the history of language and alphabets to creative writing and reading literature, and of course, all the basics are here too. Each section is color coded for quick and easy reference. "Everything You Need To Know About English" makes English easy and understandable. This little book is not just a great value for the home schooling household, but should be in every home with school aged children or where anyone may need a well prepared English reference book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource
My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This series is GREAT
This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it. 3-0 out of 5 stars Dissatisfied in Annandale
This book had some neat ideas and experiments, but not enough explanations for them. I have a very inquisitive 4 year old and this book just didn't satisfy his curiosity or my expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't find a better book for Early Childhood Science
As a science teacher who specializes in Early Childhood Science, you can't find a better book than this. It has good simple activities. It has different questions you can ask the children to stimulate their thinking. It has short explanations for grown-ups. It even has literature (read-aloud) suggestions. I've read a lot of science books, those published by educational publishers, those with fancy titles etc... and this is the one I recommend to our teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschoolers will love these fun "science" activities.
We bought "Science Play" not knowing the joy it wouldbring to our three year old. She LOVES this book! We enjoy doing theactivities with her and like that most "supplies needed" are items we have around the house. The activities are easy, fast and interactive so toddlers are kept interested. Another Bonus: No TV or Computer needed -- just Mom or Dads time. ... Read more
