3-0 out of 5 stars to kill a mockingbird
This is a story about a man named Atticus Finch an attorney who lives in small town who is considered to be well off. He lives there with his daughter called Scout and his son Jem. Atticus is a man of convictions, he does not see any place for prejudice of any kind. He is called upon to defend a blackman Tom Robinson who is accused of raping a white girl. He knew this case would be difficult to win and could totally change his life. The story seems to focus on the representation of the mockingbirdas a symbol of innocence.
Atticus was portrayed as a good father who taught his children honesty and compassion. He had a tough time as a lawyer who was labeled as a "Nigger Lover" because he showed respect towards the black community. He took many risks to stand up for his beliefs.
I related well with "Scouts", Jean Louis who was strong willed and loved to be involved with everthing. She could not understand why people dislike other people just because they were different. Scout idolized her brother and preferred to hang out with Jem than anyone else.
Jem was just an ordinay boy who supported his father's beliefs. He looked out for his sister Scout. He would become his sister's hero when Scout was attacked in the woods by a crazed man whose heart was full of hate.
The character Boo Radley was a bit confusing. I could not quite follow the author's portrayal. It was a mystery that did not unravel until the end of the story. It was reassuring to find out that Boo turned out to be sweet and kind but an introverted soul.
Tom Robinson the alleged rapist's personal life was not really described until they went to trial. It was definitely unfortunate that he was the center of so much ignorance, prejudice and in my opinion, blindness which prohidited the pursuit of justice. The story was easy to read but difficult to follow. It was a little drawn out but once i became familiar with the characters I could not put it down.
The mockingbird that was mentioned repeatedly represents innocence. This novel makes us all look at innocence and try to understand it. It made us see how some people are capable of killing the innocent because of their own ignorance and prejudices. It also makes us realize how we judge those people who are different and eccentric like Boo Radley who turns out was more humane than the townspeople who feared him. We all began as children who look at things innocently but as we grow older are influenced by others that changed our opinion on how we think of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thematic guide on Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"
Here in Duluth everybody in town is supposed to be reading Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," and there are all sorts of literary discussions, dramatic events, and the like going on all month long. In addition to rereading the novel, which is probably my favorite in American Literature, I have been looking over the various study guides available. Barron's "Literature Made Easy" guides are based on "modern scientific knowledge of how the brain works," which means not only using pictures and graphics, but unique "mind maps" that summarize details students need to learn. The idea with these is that you use them to take notes and develop a personal outline of your thoughts about the character and plot of the novel which branch out from a central point. Now, this might look a bit intimidating to me, but the goal is to build simple chains of key associations regarding what is happening in a novel and what it means. Ah, the joys of 21st century education.

This book, written by Mary Hartley, also makes use of icons for key themes from Harper Lee's novel: growing up is a cake, courage is a heart, racial prejudice a face half black and half white, etc. A typewriter is used to highlight commentary about Lee's choice of words and imagery (i.e., style and language). These icons pop up during the commentary section so that students can trace the develop and interaction of the various themes. The guide begins with some background on the author and the time in which "To Kill a Mockingbird" is set, followed by a synopsis, a discussion of the main characters, and an overview of the main themes of the novel.

The commentary section breaks each chapter into sections. For example, Chapter 1 is broken down into The start of it all, Atticus and the Finch family, Dill's arrival, Boo and the Radleys, and "Just go up and touch the house." Each section starts with the first and last sentence that define it, followed by a list of what happens in that part, commentary, and questions marked with stars which young readers are supposed to stop and think about. In comparison to similar study guides, such as Cliffsnotes, this approach has the key values of inviting active participation from the readers and dealing with more discrete units within each chapter. The little pieces add up to some significant whole without the students realizing what is going on.

The back of the book has Topics for Discussion and Brainstorming, suggestions on How to Get an "A" in English Literature (which probably translates to American Lit as well), an Exam Essay, a Model Answer and Essay Plan, Glossary and Index. My feeling is that this book is geared more towards junior high students, which is fine since that was the grade level at which I taught "To Kill a Mockingbird." Teachers can certainly find some useful things to emphasize in class discussions, even if students are not using the guide. Other volumes in the "Literature Made Easy Series" look at "Animal Farm," "Julius Caesar," "Lord of the Flies," "MacBeth," "Of Mice and Men," "Pride and Prejudice," and "Romeo and Juliet."

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is sensational!
To Kill a Mocking Bid is definitely one of the best books in American history. It clearly describes the unjust discrimination against the blacks in the south in the 1930's. It taught me alot about racism in the south. I really admire Atticus Finch, the main character in this novel, he stepped up to defend a black man despite losing all his friends and reputation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for all ages.
Great life lessons, on racism and hate. It makes you sympathetic towards the outsiders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
My nephew, 4 years old, loves this book! He loves "reading" all the pages, and looking at all the pictures. It's tremendously colorful, and interesting even for the adults. I definitely would recommend it for any child with an interest in animals, or for any adult who hopes to foster such an interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Preschool Resource
Before buying this book, I wondered if it covered enough animals to make it worthwhile. It does. Rarely are we disappointed when we reach for this kid-friendly encyclopedia. Some entries cover several similar animals, such as the entry for the Kangaroo and Wallaby.

Each entry contains a nice combination of illustrations/photographs and text. The information is nicely geared toward preschoolers and younger elementary-aged children. So far, it's been able to answer most of the questions of my very inquisitive 3 1/2 year old.

The book contains a very nice table of contents, glossary and index. While finding information on animals, my son has also learned how to use these handy reference tools. However, the book does not contain a map. A map would be a welcome addition since the book often mentions where the animals live. We use a separate map/globe/atlas but it makes the whole process more bulky.

Several of the entries cover animal-related infomation: camoflage, communication, conservation, coral reef, defense, evolution, habitat, migration, and reproduction. There are also separate entries for amphibian, insect, mammal, and reptile.

The book contains some hand-on art and experiments for a few of the entries. The ones we have tried are very age appropriate for my 3 1/2 year old.

We've referred to this book a lot. Judging by the quality of information and the interest my son shows in it, we'll continue to do so for quite some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jason's approval
My son Jason just loves this book. He chooses an animal fromthe book each night for a bedtime story, where I make up a story aboutthe animal using some of the facts from this book. The pictures are wonderful and full of color. The whole family has learned a lot from this fact filled book. ... Read more

I have three highly gifted children. None of them are interested in reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I read this book when I was much younger and it is great. All kids, under 10, will love this book. It will make them understand easily that being gifted isn't a bad thing, but something that makes you special, and isn't something to be ashamed of. This is a must read for any gifted child under the age of 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide for ages 10 and under
This book is terrific. I read a lot of it aloud to my 5 year-old and he appreciated the explanations and suggestions. I think this book has a lot of really practical suggestions for parents and kids. It also empowers kids to learn how to enjoy their gifts. I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any gifted kid
The Gifted Kid's Survival Guide is a great book for gifted children, like myself, who need to know and learn how to cope with their extraordinary minds. It helps children learn that they great because of their giftedness. This book was especially good because it gave me self-confidence and hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Every gifted child should read this
My gifted son found this in a bookstore and begged me to buy it - all the way home, as he read it in the back seat, he kept exclaiming, "Mom! This is me!" 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those learning their letters.
This book is perfect for a child learning their letters, colors and names of familiar objects. My two-year-old has fun finding objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet and the rhymes are just his speed. Parenst of toddlers know how some books can wear on you after a few reads...this one doesn't. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Can you find...?
We play a game I invented called "Can you find...?" in many other related books and when I came across the I SPY series, I knew the author had a winner. We own a number of the I SPY books today and they have become our favorites. It teaches patients and focuses her attention on looking for the little details in life. I will admit that I still use my phrase "Can you find?" to this day. Easy to read series. Highly recommended to 3 years old.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not what expected
Since I'm restricted to ordering my books online, I'm unable to peek inside to check out the pages.

The alphabet is great with a picture scheme on each of the letters that represent the first letter of the word. It's not difficult to find the letters as they place about 3 large letters on a page with anywhere between 4-7 small pictures around..all on a white background. The inside pages are nothing like the cover.

The numbers and alphabet books might be better for a child up to age 1 (at least in the case for my child).

I bought this for my child's 2nd birthday hoping she'd have to search and find the letters of the alphabet to make it a little more interesting for her. It's still a nice alphabet book for practicing, but not so much for searching.

I found the numbers book to be more interesting since it offered more objects on the page that is more similar to the typical 'I Spy' series. The numbers are still clearly visible, so still not much searching. I'll have to order the older children's I Spy books since young children are more intriqued with complexity than with simple unchallenging pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars I SPY LITTLE LETTERS
I have worked with children as a pediatric nurse for 31 years and have spent a great deal of time reading children's storybooks to the children under my care. I purchased "I SPY LITTLE LETTERS" for my 29 month old grandchild. There is no better way to give a young child a sense of pride than by asking them to find objects on the page of a book. I am a believer in the "I SPY" concept so we proceeded to read the book together. What a delightful book! It is colorful, cheerful and fun too. The pages will keep a child busy for a while for there is a lot to do. Colorful letters and easily identifiable objects and figures are to be found on every page. The book challenges a child to observe, find and verbally express their discoveries. What a sense of accomplishment it is for a child to be able to discover things. I highly recommend this little board book for toddlers. It is a terrific early introduction to reading. ... Read more

A cheerful approach to all things financial plus playful photo collagesand colorful drawings make up this fact-filled compendium of everything kids could possibly need to know about money--and more. Neale S. Godfrey, a nationally recognized expert on kids and money, and illustrator Randy Verougstraete tell the story of money--from bartering to investing--with animated appeal. Each subject receives careful and lively attention: the history of money; earning, saving, and spending money; banking facts and bank account information; credit card explanations and warnings ("It's In-credit-ible!"); information about America's economic structure and the government's economic role; taxes; the laws of supply and demand; inflation and depression; and stocks and bonds. Fun financial trivia is interspersed throughout, and word problems and matching games complete each of the nine chapters.

Godfrey does a fine job of covering complicated concepts, successfully tying her explanations with kids' everyday experiences (for example, creating a business plan for a dog-walking service). Kids will enjoy learning about finances with this easy-to-digest format, and grown-ups may be surprised to learn a thing or two as well. This book is about as far from dull gray, boring, banking as it gets. (Ages 8 to 12) --Ericka Lutz ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Younger Kids money book
This book a little dumb but still cut. All parents out there who have 6 year olds who can read and like counting should buy this book. I like one page that shows how credit cards become money but that is pretty much it. The illustrater, Randy Verougstraete was decent but I guess it is hard to illistrate a money book

On a nicer note this is a really cute book for younger kids. My little sister loved it. It is really a matter of taste. This book had a lot of cool facts such as how tall is ten thousand dollars worth of nickles. A cute book but this book is better for 5 or 6 year olds not older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on money for children
(...)This book is just full of ideas, concepts, drawings, etc. all presented in a simple, colourful manner. This book would make a great gift for a child, to help them understand money concepts. The author has written some other great books on money and children, for adults to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very educational!
The colorful pictures and easy to read diagrams make this a captivating book. Godfrey covers it all - from the history of money, government and taxes, credit and it's pitfalls to investing. Because the pictures tell so much of the story even young children will gain insights about money. This book should be a must read for all middle school students; it's a comprehensive lesson in civics that answers the questions "What are taxes?" and "How are your taxes spent?" in a way children can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about money for ages 7 to 107.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great book from a great author
I gave this book to my sister when she began attending college and she found it immensely useful. She has since bought copies for a few of her friends so they could learn from the knowledge in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book really hits home. As a recent grad I have to say Traci touched on all the important points of surviving in college. Look up the book if you are about to go to college, or just need an uplifting book for freshwomen trying to survive their first year, good luck girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and fun guide for girls.
This book is written for college students by a recent college grad. I wish there were books like this when I went to college! Traci Maynigo covers what girls want to know about surviving college and what they might not know to ask. She covers the basics and more from packing lists, managing your finances, guys, surviving classes, and getting along with your roommates. Also included is pratical advice on dealing with depression, exercising, the party scene, and so much more. It would make a great gift for a any girl on her way to college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift!
I gave this to my neice as she went off to school, and she loves it. Before I gave it to her I leafed through it, and ended up reading the whole thing! Funny and instructive, engaging and no-nonsense, A Girl's Guide to College is simply a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Girl's Guide" an Incredible Book!
Traci Maynigo's "A Girl's Guide to College" is the best book for college women on the market, and one of the best guide's to college life I have ever seen. Maynigo's thorough examination of the college experience is remarkable, as she discusses everything from choosing classes to living with roommates to finding that special someone. She manages to keep a light and entertaining tone throughout without trivializing the importance of making the right decisions in college. But most impressive is her ability to discuss more serious issues like sexual harrassment and rape with an openness and honesty that really sets this book apart from previous "Girl's Guides". I highly recommend Maynigo's book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I used this book in my french class and I thought it was great practice and very helpful, but yeah, be warned -- this is just the student copy WITHOUT the tapes or the answers so pretty useless it's used in a classroom setting.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
This book is simply a question book. In order to use it properly you need the audio cassettes and the the teacher's guide( to check your answers!) which is impossible to purchase unless you are a teacher. It makes no sense why it is sold on it's own. A complete waste of money........

1-0 out of 5 stars No answers + no tapes or CDs = Useless
I ordered this book after reading the 5 star review, and upon receiving it realized that it is a STUDENT edition, with NO ANSWERS and NO tapes or CDs (or even a written script) for the listening sections! Without answers and tapes, it is useless as an AP study guide! The Amazon description of the book should state this, so other people don't waste their time ordering it. I couldn't find the missing items on Amazon, so I searched the web until I found the teacher guide ($16.97) and tapes ($49.97) on the Prentice Hall webpage.

Designed as a transition dictionary for readers in late-elementary school, Webster's New World Children's Dictionary bridges the gap between simple, picture-based dictionaries and the dull-but-necessary ones we all reach for when faced with unknown words. The medium-sized text, example sentences that accompany most definitions, and the miniature pronunciation guide on every page all work nicely together to ensure that kids will understand correct usage without getting overwhelmed with detail. Also included are maps, history and geography pages, and an introductory thesaurus. Especially helpful for younger users is the 10-page guide to dictionary usage, which covers synonyms, homonyms, and the ever-important ways to look up a word when you don't know how to spell it in the first place.

In general, the definitions are easily understandable for children ages 7 to 12, providing accurate answers without being verbose. In Webster's New World College Dictionary, "rebel" is described as "one who engages in armed resistance against the established government of one's country." In this version, you'll find the more kid-friendly definition "a person who fights against any kind of control or authority." --Jill Lightner ... Read more

Book Description

Since 1836, children have been delighted by the McGuffey Readers' exotic adventures, exciting stories, beautiful poems, and funny fables. This companion volume was revised in 1879 to conform in orthography, pronunciation, and spelling to the latest edition of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. The Eclectic Spelling-Book was designed to teach students the English language not by appealing merely to memory, but by associating each lesson with some principle of sound, meaning, or accent. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Homeschool Review
Last year we used the Spalding method of spelling, and I think it is a geat way to learn spelling. The biggest hurdle to implementing that program for my son was the randomness of the words with no connection to what he is reading or learning in his daily life. This was a difficult hurdle for an intuitive learner like him to overcome. The McGuffy Speller lists words with common sounds. Thus you will have words like fair, and fare together on one list, teaching the child the different ways one sound can be spelled. I think this is easier for a child to deal with than having to decide as in Spalding which spelling goes with the same sound. In McGuffy the sounds are introduced with the words and this is less frustrating than a child having to feel he should somehow know which spelling to use: are, or air. If you tried Spalding, and liked the phonetic approach, but don't think you will continue in it, and are looking for a similar but more conventional approach, this may be a good choice for you. I think it takes the best of phonics, memorization, and word patterns, and combines them into a great word list that can be used for weekly spelling tests. Personally, I am not using even this method this year as I believe the memorization and detachment from hands on learning just won't stick with my son. If your child doesn't balk at weekly spelling tests, learning the words in this book will prepare him for college level reading and writing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitivity in text and illustrations = charming book
Dear Ms. Barnes,

Thank you so very much for A LITTLE BOOK OF MANNERS: COURTESY AND KINDNESS FOR YOUNG LADIES. It has made all the difference in our lives.

One evening my husband and I experienced one of the most embarrassing moments of our entire lives when we took our granddaughters out to dinner. I suddenly realized that they simply had not been taught some pretty basic manners. Modern parents are so busy with two careers and hectic schedules, I suppose.

Imagine how thrilled I was to find this book and how even more delighted to discover that when they read it, both girls took the lessons to heart and began to practice them. It saved me the further embarrassment of telling their parents about the painful incident. You back me up on that one: "Don't point out other people's bad manners," -- remember? Of course, grandmothers have special advantages in that area, but tact and sometimes even reticence is often the better part of valor.

"Five good reasons to write thank you notes!" and
"The heart of all good manners is the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." What brave and wonderful things to write to youngsters in a society that sneers at manners and religion as "sentimental" and "old-fashioned."

Because of the lessons here -- from thank you notes to how to entertain friends to telephone manners to introductions and party manners and more -- we are now proud to take the girls anywhere. Their introductions (which we had fun practicing) are truly graceful.

Another very important point you make is to treat brothers and sisters like friends. That is, with respect. Practicing that one little idea can change the entire atmosphere in a home.

Thank you, Emilie Barnes, for a very important book. This one was so successful for us that I bought the companion volume, A LITTLE BOOK OF MANNERS FOR BOYS and look forward to seeing equally triumphant results among our grandsons.

Michel Sparks's illustrations are colorful and delightfully whimsical. The visual appeal and emphasis they add to the text makes this a very special book indeed.

Thank you again for the lovely and sensitive addition to our children's library and to our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish she would write a book for boys too.
Excuse me, could I please tell you about a book I just read? Well, this is what Emilie Marie would say if she could walk off the pages and into your life. She also believes that the heart of all good manners is the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is a little girl you would happily invite over for a tea party!

This is just an enchanting book for helping young ladies learn courtesy and kindness. Emilie Marie introduces herself in a most polite way, then explains how her Aunt Evelyn has been helping her practice her manners.

This book helps girls to learn how to meet people, shake hands, answer the phone, be a good friend and so much more. I loved the section on the heart of Good Manners. I must say we adults could learn a few things from this book. Emilie Marie learns how to write thank you notes and how to answer invitations to a party.

To give this book to a little girl is also a way to give the gift of happiness to all those who know her. Michal Sparks has illustrated the pink and yellow pages in the most charming way possible. The blue bow on the cover is just adorable.

Thank you for reading my review and I really hope you will buy this book for someone you know. I bought it for my nieces and they love it. I must say they are turning out to be polite little ladies themselves.

It was so nice to meet you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and effective!
My child went from exhibiting the most atrocious of table manners to conducting herself at table with perfect grace! After reading this book, she was eager for opportunities to practice her new manners on the telephone and at the table. Knowing "the rules" made her feel confident. Framing the need to be respectful of grown-ups as an issue of manners rather than power has made her rethink her behavior at school as well. Granted, this book takes an old-fashioned approach to proper behaviors (it is, for example, gender-specific, as the title clearly shows), but it has affected the way my behavior-challenged 6-year-old (though it's geared toward a slightly older audience) thinks about her actions. The illustrations are beautiful, and the prose -- from the perspective of a fictive childhood Emilie Barnes -- engages the socially-conscious child's mind. I only wish there were more, and that boys could be privy to this way of thinking about social interactions as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The girls loved it!
Manners are such a lost art! I used this well-written (and very cute) book to teach a class on manners to a group of girls. Needless to say, they had a blast while learning valuable information. I would highly recommend it for the little girls in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helps the child be comfortable in many situations
What a great way to teach basic good manners! The way the chapters are written, it is possible to do role playing to practice different scenarios. The chapters are short enough to hold the attention of even a five year old, but with volumes of assistance for many situations. The nearly lost art of writing thank-you notes may actually revive with the training this book offers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very cute and clever
Great little book teaching children the meaning of "opposite" words using clever elephant drawings. My favorites are boy-girl, smart-stupid, subtraction-addition, visible-invisible, torn-fixed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic!
This simple but clever collection of opposites stands head and shoulders above the usual treatment of this basic idea. It has a sense of humor that will appeal to all ages, and a slightly anarchic attitude (think EVERYONE POOPS!) that make it great to read and re-read. Droll and well designed--excellent work! ... How would you define "bump" for a 6-year-old? The Scholastic First Dictionary outlines it as follows: "1. A bump is a round place that is above the area around it. William got a bump on his head when he hit it on a low branch of a tree. When something has many bumps on it, we say it is bumpy. The country road was bumpy. 2. When you bump into something, your body hits something you didn't mean it to hit." Not bad, eh? The chief advantage of this straightforward, inviting dictionary is that it is accessible to young readers--the definitions are written in complete sentences with age-appropriate language, and each word is used in a simple sentence.

Containing more than 1,500 words highlighted by bold, kelly-green type, the Scholastic First Dictionary is targeted to the reading level--and interests--of elementary school students, and not designed to be comprehensive. For example, "knitting" is not in this dictionary, but "kneel," "knife," and "knight" are. "Iguana" is not there, but "igloo" is.Each page of this 224-page volume contains an average of eight words, and includes at least two full-color photos to help illustrate word meanings. The real value of this resource for children is in helping them build basic dictionary skills and as a general guide for early readers, teaching them how to spell words, how to pronounce them, what words mean, how to use them in a sentence, how words change form, and, of course, discovering new words. The crisp, colorful layout encourages hours of contented browsing for the voracious young knowledge seeker. A great gift for any budding reader! (Ages 5 to 9) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

These books are so good at helping kids learn the parts of speech. They give so many clear examples of sentences, with the specific part of speech in a different color so everyone will notice it. I used these in a classroom during english class and they all loved it. A+ to this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars They've done it again!!
Can the topic of adverbs be colorful, interesting....dare I say it? Fun? Apparently Brian P. Cleary and his innovative cat-loving illustrator Brian Gable think so! Not only does Cleary explain this difficult part of speech to grade schoolers with a rhyming, lively verse, my college sophomore is not above consulting this WORDS ARE CATEGORICAL series for the lessons within. You've done it again, Brian and Brian!
