Today's young people are not only interested in money, they're quiteknowledgeable about it--which is apparently what happens when you mix computerknow-how with full employment and parents who play the market. Most, however, still require some assistance as they begin to build their nest eggs. JanetBamford's Street Wise: A Guide for Teen Investors fits this bill nicelybecause it assembles virtually everything these budding financiers need, andpresents it in language they understand. Bamford addresses the market'soperation, full-service versus discount brokers, taxes, investment clubs andgames, and even the possibility of a Wall Street career. Her best adviceconcerns stocks and mutual funds and is again delivered in a relevant, complete, and thoroughly noncondescending manner. "A stock is to a mutual fund," shewrites at one point, in a style familiar to her audience, "as: (a) a can of sodais to a six pack, (b) the Dallas Cowboys are to the NFL, (c) a kitten is to adog, (d) a flower is to a garden." The answer, by the way, is (d). Bamford alsodiscusses specific kid-friendly investment vehicles, as well as the initialfiscal forays of high-fliers like thestreet.com's James Cramer.--Howard Rothman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all teenagers!
This is an excellent introduction to the stock market for teenagers. The book is directed towards teenagers and accomplishes it's goal well. All teenagers should read this book to gain a starting knowledge of the American Stockmarket.
The book teaches stock vocabulary, trading tips, how to start, risk and rewards, and many other topics. But, this book is definitely an introduction - if you have a good knowledge of the stock market already, this might not be for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book was a great introduction to the Stock Market for me. It was simple and easy to read. It was also interesting. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book was easy to follow. I enjoyed the chapter on how to get a job on Wall Street. I am 14 and have already started saving for college thanks to this book. My mom made me read it. I was reluctant at first but now I am very glad she did. That is why I rate this book a five!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read and comprehensive
"Street Wise" is a great introduction to the world of stocks and bonds. I thought that I knew the basics of how "The Street" works, but I learned a great deal from this book. The list of web sites in the back is really useful, and the interviews with past and present teen investors are also interesting.

The author writes clearly and doesn't talk down to teens. She doesn't promise that you'll become a billionaire overnight, but she does a great job of explaining how to make smart decisions with your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids can hit the ground running as storytellers with this!
This book is an excellent companion to the authors' book "Children Tell Stories." That book helps adults set up and develop kids' storytelling programs in a very comprehensive manner. This book provides stories with which to do this.

The stories are arranged by difficulty, with excellent telling suggestions alongside the text of the story. Some are even set up for tandem telling, which I find kids often want to try, but struggle to find a way to make it work.

The stories come from a variety of sources, and they are all guaranteed to please at least one of the kids in your class or group who wish to tell. As one who has coached many middle-school kids to tell their first story, I find these stories to be excellent in helping those kids who are just not sure how they should proceed. I highly recommend it for kids who want to tell and the adults who nurture this desire in them!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the classroom
As an elemntary teacher, I love this book. The book contains 30 stories representing different cultures with clever plots and defined characters. This versatile book is written for beginning storytellers but can be used in the classroom in several ways. The delightful stories are great read alouds that teach students how to develope characters and build experience for their own writing. The easy to use stories encourage the natural storytelling talent of childres who love to perform. The guide along the side helps with expressions and voice inflections allowing the students the confidence to develope their own style. Another benefit of this book, although probably not the intention of the authors, is that it builds the skills reguired for the NYS 4th grade ELA exam. Students learn techniques of using storyboards, listening for details and identifying major events and seguences of a story. This is a classroom must.

5-0 out of 5 stars from: Territorial Tattler
If you teach storytelling to children, you'll want a copy of this book. The first 18 pages, addressed to the kids, explain how to choose, learn, and perform a story. Then follow 30 tales laid out in mouth-sized pieces, with parallel columns suggesting gestures and vocal intonations to use. Ranging from fables and folktales to short literary gems, all are appealing and accessible to the beginner. At the end of the book is a section for adults, giving both pedagogical arguments and practical suggestions for ensuring success for young tellers. Detailed source notes and additional story suggestions round out the grown up section. Hamilton & Weiss have distilled excellent advice from their 16+ years experience working with young tellers. I think self-motivated students could use this book on their own; but an adult, using the content and tone of the authors' sections addressed to children, will be equipped to start a youth storytelling group with confidence. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All Primary Teachers Could Use This!
As a teacher of third graders, I've used this book and "Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What is an Adjective" to teach and delight my students, and to take some of the tedium out of parts of speech. Within a day or so of introducing these books, all 27 of my group knew the difference between the major parts of speech. We found out that Mr. Cleary has a website, and I printed out some word-building worksheets off it for free, and a took away a couple of suggestions on how integrate teaching nouns with a fun art project, called the noun quilt, in which each letter of the alphabet has a noun, as in B, BOOT, C, CAT and the students draw the item and eventually it becomes this big old paper quilt full of nouns. His publisher assures me that TO ROOT, TO TOOT, TO PARACHUTE: WHAT IS A VERB? will be in soon, and it's a no-brainer that I'll get that as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mink, A Fink, A Skating Rink: What is a Noun?
Funny, silly, but slyly (if that's a word) educational, A Mink A Fink A Skating Rink: What is a Noun? will do for grammar what "Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue in Fourteen-hundred ninety-two" did for social studies. Kids can't help but remember which part of speech a word is because of the clever rhymes. My second graders find the illustrations wonderful as well. Cleary's first series includes great teaching tools like "Jamaica Sandwich?", which is really a 4th-5th grade combination Geography/English lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink : What Is a Noun?
This is an exciting, well illustrated, fun book to read! This book is one of the favorite picks in my third grade classroom. The students enjoy reading the story over and over again. Thumbs up for the fabulous idea of teaching language through exciting stories! ... Read more

Book Description

The kidnapping and murder of Emmett Till is famous as a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. Emmett Till, a fourteen-year-old Black teenager from Chicago, was visiting family in a small town in Mississippi during the summer of 1955. Likely showing off to friends, Emmett allegedly whistled at a white woman. Three days later his brutally beaten body was found floating in the Tallahatchie River. The extreme violence of the crime put a national spotlight on the Jim Crow ways of the South, and many Americans-Black and white-were further outraged at the speedy trial of the white murderers.Although the two white men were tried and acquitted by an all-white jury, they later bragged publicly about the crime. It was a galvanizing moment for Black leaders and ordinary citizens, including such activists as Rosa Parks. In clear, vivid detail Chris Crowe investigates the before-and-aftermath of the crime, as well as the dramatic court trial, and places it into the context of the nascent Civil Rights Movement.

With lively narrative and abundantly illustrated with forty fascinating contemporaneous photographs, this impressive work of nonfiction brings fresh insight to the case in a manner that will be accessible and eye-opening for teenagers and adults alike.

Book Description

You have to write! It's a class assignment. But you have nothing to write about. All the other kids seem to have something to tell because they start in right away. What can you do? Stop and think. No one else can tell your stories -- about your family, your dog or cat. No one else can tell how it was when your library book got soaked in the rain.

But what if you don't like what you write? There are all sorts of ways to change it, to make it better. Keep on playing with your words, putting them together in different ways. You want whatever you write to be good. It will get better and better as you work on it.

This is an encouraging book, sympathetically illustrated by Teresa Flavin's charming pictures, for all young readers who worry when they're told to write something. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Gates
I would give this book a five-star rating. The title is Bill Gates and the author is Jeanne M. Lesinski. Bill Gates had a dream. His dream was to create his own computer. Bill does complete his goal. On different kinds of computers he created, he did them with other friends. Throughout the story, it tells about his life, his wife, and three kids. Read the book and find out about his life and the start of Microsoft.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read.
A & E produces a daily Biography show about famous people in all categories, this book is based on that series. Bill Gates is more than a story about the richest man in the world, is an accounting of where this fame and fortune came from and the vision of the future of the software giant.

While the book is only about 100 pages there is enough information about Gates' roots, his ride to the top of the software industry and his recent battles with the Justice department to give this reader a new look into the man himself.

The author gives you pictures from early childhood to his start with Microsoft in Albuquerque to his work with the Bill Gates Library Foundation. I must admit most of the photos have already been seen, however they're a few new and interesting ones, especially his new house.

I personally liked the way the author put together the story, not running over of boring you with details in any one are. The storyline flows from start to finish. Granted there is a lot more that could have gone into the book, however this one was an excellent read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son wore this book out from use!!!
I ordered this book from Amazon, because my sons had literally wore the spine off of this book...we had purchased the first book at a bookstore while on vacation and they absolutely loved it. It is has the perfect context for a 4-8 year old imagination with information in the form of statements that start with "I didn't know that...". Example, "I didn't know that sperm whales have the largest brains of any animal." I remember one time we sat down and read chapters of this book for 90 minutes straight...my oldest son was only 4 at the time and it kept his attention for that long and probably would have longer if mommy had not got tired.

If I could only choose one book to recommend buying for a younger child, I would recommend this book. My oldest son calls it his "big book of everything." I have a feeling that before my sons outgrow this book, I am going to end up having to purchase another copy to make up for this one being used so much.

I have two sons and they both have enjoyed this book tremendously. This is one of the few books that not only entertain my sons, but that I also find enjoyable to read with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what we were looking for!
My six year old son asked for a book about wild animals and a book about snakes for Christmas. I found this book by chance in a local bookstore. It touches on a range of beasts and creatures including snakes, bugs, big cats, whales, dinosaurs, sharks, spiders, monkeys, and more. It is written in bigger print, filled with lot's of interesting information and facts, and has just as many great pictures. My son really enjoys this book. After opening his Christmas gifts, this is what he sat down with first, and continues to sit down with often. It has been a big hit. My husband and I have enjoyed reading it to our children, learning new facts along with them in an entertaining way. It is and excellent book and well worth purchasing.

Book Description

Was Columbus the first European in the Americas?

What sport became more popular after the Civil War?

Were the Little Rock Nine a rock-and-roll band?

As best-selling author Kenneth C. Davis knows, history can be fun, fascinating, and memorable. When his don't know much about® history was published in 1990, it was a sensation. The book delivered a fresh take on history with its wit and unusual detail. Davis now does for young people what his earlier book did for adults. In his trademark question-and-answer style -- peppered with surprising facts, historic reproductions, and Matt Faulkner's lively illustrations -- Davis introduces our ancestors who settled the East and expanded the West, as well as those who had been living here all along. His sure touch brings the drama and excitement of the American story vividly to life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Setting the story straight
This is a concise history of the United States, told from a decidedly liberal point of view. Davis begins his story with the various discoveries of America, informing us of Columbus' motivations, Erickson's settlements, and the Native American migrations of 35,000 years ago. He continues with stories of the French and Indian Wars, the founding of the United States, the Civil War, Teddy Roosevelt, and the Twentieth Century events through the presidency of Ronald Reagan.

Each chapter begins with a list of questions on a given period of history. Then Davis begins describing what happened during this period, taking up and answering each question in turn. Starting with Teddy Roosevelt, Davis' own political persuasion starts to come through more and more clearly. While I myself agree with Davis' comments about FDR and Ronald Reagan, I think conservative readers might find some of them a bit objectionable. In general, I found this a very readable concise history of the United States, but it's not for everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful project ideas!
This book was very helpful to me as I explained to my daughter about being a good person of service. The project ideas seem to relate well to the interest of kids and many can be done by the kids themselves. Other projects will require adult help.

I think this book is very good. As we read through the book, my daughter had many questions, as well as suggestions and modifications for certain projects. It was very thought provoking and inspiring.

This is an excellent resource for anyone working with youth and young adults, especially those in the non-profit field. The book provides ideas, helpful hints, and most importantly empowers youth to help their community.

All of the ideas are well thought out. Many of the activities can be altered, simplifed, or enhanced depending on your goals.

There are very helpful hints on how to create press releases, flyers, public service announcements, etc. This is a helpful guide for youth and a great resource for adults.

I recommend this book to anyone who works with youth and young adults that are committed to helping others. ... Read more

Book Description

Understanding how the government of the United States works can sometimes be a daunting task for adults, so imagine how challenging it can be to children. Now, with this easy-to-follow, simplified, fully illustrated book, written by one of the directors of the Judicial Center in Washington, D.C., children will have a guide that untangles the web of complexity behind the workings of our democratic government.

Having someone who works in the judicial branch of our government lay out how our government works in book form brings an unprecedented clarity to the subject for children.

In addition to explaining the three distinct branches of our federal government, the book discusses the extension of the judicial branch throughout the country by our federal court system. How government officials are elected and appointed is also explained, as is the unique concept that government employees work for the people.

The book is not overwhelming in size or scope and the layout, featuring Pam Tanzey's illustrations, creates a visual presentation that will not intimidate children and is easy to digest. The book also includes a map of the capital area to further help familiarize students with Washington, D.C.. Useful as a shorthand guide to our government, or as a supporting text, How The U. S. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book for social studies lessons!
I bought this as a reference book for my middle school-aged children. It does not get bogged down with lengthy discussions. Rather, it is written for the younger crowd and does exactly what I wanted it to do. I would recommend this book to parents looking for a simplified explanation for their children of how the U.S. government is set up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Introduction to Grammar For First and Second Grade
I bought this book because I had heard such wonderful reviews from the homeschooling community. When I received it, I was not disappointed. The lessons are thorough and my daughter enjoys doing them! The author uses picture and nature study as well as classic poetry and prose to teach the basics of grammar. There is no teacher preparation time required, and no complicated teacher's manual to follow. This gentle grammar introduction is a joy to use for student and teacher alike. There are two years of engaging lessons for the beginning grammar student, so it's a great buy! You'll love this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive practice
Emma Serl created a practical and varied grammar book. I purchased this unsure of what I really was going to be getting. I am pleased. Our homeschooled children find the book's requirements easy to understand but challenging to accomplish. It is recommended for second and third graders, but I simplify the assignments for our first grader, as well. They are learning some grammar basics but don't seem to realize the amount of their effort.

No expensive teacher's guide is needed. This is a good price for a practical and easy-to-use format. ... Read more
