5-0 out of 5 stars Touching insight into the people who are our "angels"
This is a lovely story of the "angels" that walk among us: be they teachers, firefighters, our neighbors, our mothers... When you think you need some strength, these are the people who come through for us -- our support and inspiration. It is a great story for children, but also is a wonderful gift for your "angel." I keep giving my book away....

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating story and illustrations!
This book, beautifully illustrated and written in poetic form is a keeper and a wonderful gift to kids. It is a simple tale of how important we are to one another and how we all have "angels" watching over us whether or not we can really "see" them. In fact they are in smiles, and in nature and in the good things in life. This book so captivated my daughter-in-law that she distributed hundreds of them to the families of the firefighters, the police and the rescue personnel families who lost their father/mother in the Sept 11 tragedy. A mother of two herself, she and her family and friends deliverd these books to the firestations in early December for distribution. Each book was dedicated to the family and signed personally by the people who gave the donation for the book. This was a deed done out of love and this is what this book is about. A great baby present- and a keeper for your child. I am a grandmother- and I recommend this to all you. ENjoy and read with your grandchild!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of 2000!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to my Christian library.
I wasn't even looking for a childrens book the other day when I accidentally happened upon "The Tale of Three Trees". I was brought nearly to tears by this touching little tale. I took it home and read it to my children that very night at bedtime, and even they were touched by this story. The sysnopsis above really tells it all. It is a story of Gods love for us, and his own unique gifts to us all in this world. I plan on giving it as a gift to friends with children, so they may share this special little story with them as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! This blew me away!
I had never heard this story before and had no idea what to expect when I read it...as I got to the part about the third tree's destiny, I started crying - it touched me that much...what a great lesson is contained in this simple tale -- each tree's dream was fulfilled although not precisely in the way that they anticipated...excellent jumping off point for discussions with little ones -- As the room mom for my 5-year-old son's kindergarten class, I got this book for his teacher's birthday and had all the children "sign" it - the teacher was touched by this powerfully moving story, as were the parents who came to her party...really a great book to keep and especially to give.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read for Christian children
My homeschooled children (grades 1 & 3) enjoy reading this from time to time. The binding is great, the pictures are good, the print is large, and the text is easy to read. A touching classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I received this book from my parents for a Christmas gift when I was 25 years old. And I love it! It has become my favorite book to give as gifts to every child...young and old. This book stays on my coffee table through out the year and I pick it up and read it all the time.

The story is very good and really makes you think about what God has in store of each of us...usally not what we think!

Would definitely recommend to every one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tale of Three Trees- - - - - Spectacular
I received this book for Christmas this year totally amazed that my friend would sent me a child's book I thought of it as some sort of joke!! But as I read through the pages and looked at the pictures, my eyes filled with tears as the story unfolded, each tree received their wish, I was just amazed! Excellent book for young and old alike. I am glad my friend sent me this to treasure for years to come!! ... Read more

My boys and I loved this devotional because it kept us coming back for more everyday. The facts and stories were about everyday things and their origins. 5-0 out of 5 stars It helps Children Understand God
My daughter got this book as a gift for Christmas. It was the best thing she received! A child has such a hard time understanding God, and what he means to our lives. This book explained so much to her. As she progressed through it, I could see the changes in her both mental and emotional. Some of the best chapters and segments were: Can we see God?; What does God want from us?; What should we do when we don't understand God?; Had God really lived forever?; Does God want me to be punished. The list could go on and on, but there is just not enough room to explain how much this will help your child. Some of the other chapters include wonderful segments and descriptions of: Creation, Sin, Bible History, Jesus, Salvation, Worship, Prayer, Church, Forgiveness, Evangelism, and Heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Christian Home Should Own One!
It's has always been my hope that parents start building a strong understanding of theological truths in the lives of their children. This book is a great tool to do just that! I do believe that every home which owns and uses this book would benefit. An additional note: Although this book is targeted for the younger elementary age group, it can also be used with new believers who need to get acquainted with the basics. In this post-Christian era we live in, it's amazing how many adults don't know any of the content found in this childrens book. ... Read more

There's something to be said for a book that makes you wish you'd been part of a poor immigrant family living in New York's upper east side on the eve of World War I. Sydney Taylor's time-honored classic does just that. Life is rich for the five mischievous girls in the family. They find adventure in visiting the library, going to market with Mama, even dusting the front room. Young readers who have never shared a bedroom with four siblings, with no television in sight, will vicariously experience the simple, old-fashioned pleasures of talk, make-believe, and pilfered penny candy. The family's Jewish faith strengthens their ties to each other, while providing still more excitement and opportunity for mischief. Readers unfamiliar with Judaism will learn with the girls during each beautifully depicted holiday. This lively family, subject of four more "all-of-a- kind" books, is full of unique characters, all deftly illustrated by Helen John. Taylor based the stories on her own childhood family, and the true-life quality of her writing gives this classic its page-turning appeal. (Ages 9 to 12) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why are the sequels out of print?
I first read this book when I was eight years old, and I loved it so much I went to the library and checked out the sequels. As other readers mentioned, not only are these books interesting and fun to read (I still enjoy reading them at age 37) but Christians can get a glimpse of what the Jewish religion is really like on a day-by-day basis. Other than Hanukah and Passover, school kids aren't really taught much about the other Jewish holidays. I remember in fourth grade, a Jewish girl in my class brought in Hamentaschen pastries, and I normally wouldn't have tried something with prunes in it - but because I had read about Purim in "All of a Kind Family", I discovered a wonderful treat!

I should also say that the illustrations in the books are terrific! Esp in the later books, little Charlie is so cute.

Hopefully the publisher or whoever owns the copyright to Ms. Taylor's books will read the reviews here on Amazon and re-release the entire series, as it deserves to be done. (I seem to recall the paperbacks were available in a gift box in the 70's).

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for Arab-Israeli peace talks!
I'd like to completely agree with and expand on Amanda Quick's review of this book. I return to it again and again (I'm more than twice her age, so that's a lot of re-readings), and expressions like "library lady" have become part of my family vocabulary. Like Amanda, I was raised Protestant; I never knew anyone Jewish until I went to college, and although I had some idea of festivals and food (my family was very international in its speech: for example, we used the word "tuchus" all the time, but I didn't know it was Yiddish until years later), I learned a LOT from all of Taylor's books. I have been teaching people from all over the world for years, and without exception, the Israelis and Jews from other countries are thrilled that I know about holidays and rituals, and all want to read the Taylor books when I tell them how important they were to me. The story of Succos alone is worth the entire series--magical. I truly believe this series could contribute to international understanding and peace. Meanwhile, read them all--they'll make you feel good about life

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved in our Family
Everyday my 3 year old boy listens to the audio tape of All of a Kind Family 3-5 times. He calls it his "little girls tape" and sits in front of the stereo drinking in the stories. While he loves the Little House in the Prairies cd's this is his long time favourite. We have listened to this continually for a year now and he has every word memorised... I should know because he often starts to retell the stories (verbatim) and my wife and I have to listen to this little gentile kid retell jewish stories. Anyway, it is a fantastic slice of life and definately helps us to inculcate the kind of values that we want in our family.

5-0 out of 5 stars An audiobook worth listening to!
As an elementary school teacher I rely on audiobooks a great deal as it helps struggling readers not only participate fully in the story, but works as a wonderful foray into the world of reading.I personally enjoyed this audiobook so much that I played it for my entire class. They loved it! The narration was excellent, calming even the rowdiest kids, and they were instantly drawn in. It was a great introduction to the Jewish culture and heritage, as well as an excellent discussion piece about immigrant America at the turn of the century! Consider this for your classroom, it has sparked curiosity, debate and learning for weeks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Other than the Bible, my all time favorite Christian book...
I first read this book in college and have introduced it to many, read the children's edition (BEAUTIFUL illustrations - a good devotional book) to my children and since read the complete version to them.

I cannot think of a more powerful allegory illustrating the Christian life. Though most people are familiar with Pilgrim's Progress, in my opinion, this book if even better.

The story is about a girl named "Much-Afraid" who lives in the "Valley of Humiliation". She has a crooked mouth and crooked feet. Though she belongs to the "Fearings" family, she loves the Shepherd with all of her heart and desires to be in His service. She longs to have "hind's feet" and "leap upon the high places" with Him. (see the Psalms for the quote) He tells her that she may have her request, but first He must place the seed of love in her heart - it looks like a thorn.

Her family has planned for her to marry her cousin, "Craven Fear", but "Much-Afraid" doesn't want to and her only way out is to go with the Shepherd.

To reach the High Places, the Shepherd gives "Much-Afraid" two unique companions to help her along the way. They are companions of every Christian who walks the pathway to follow Christ. You must read the book to find out who they are, but be ready for a surprise!

I love this book because it doesn't gloss over what our lives as Christians are like, the challenges we face, and a Biblical account of how we are to proceed - that following Christ means dying to self to live for Him. This is one of the most beautifully written accounts I have ever read.

Get a copy and read it. It will become one of your most treasured possessions. Then read the sequel, "Mountain of Spices" where "Much-Afraid", who has been given a new name, returns to the valley to show the love of the Shepherd to her family and friends.

TERIFFIC BOOKS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Encouraging
This book gives a glimpse into how we live our daily lives. Just like Much-Afraid we travel through the Valley of Loss and walk along the Sea of Loneliness. We always must trust God no matter where He asks us to go, no matter what He asks He do. Like Much-Afraid we will encounter Pride, Anger, and Jealousy and we will call on the Shepherd and He will help us. The seed of true love was planted in Much-Afraid's heart and when she reached the High Places she finally learned what it felt like to be truly loved. The love we experience in this world is nothing compared to the love Jesus has for us. He wants to love and help you but you must ask for Him to. The journey to the High Places is a hard one Much-Afraid learns but the destination is well worth the journey. Learning to give our entire life to Jesus is hard but the reward of knowing Him is more amazing than anything we could ever want or desire. My favorite part of this book was when the Lord asked Much-Afraid what she would do if He lied to her and her reply was "My Lord-if you can decieve me, you may. It can make no difference. I must love you as long as I continue to exist. I cannot live without loving you." I know personally I could not live without God in my life and taking care of me and I hope everyone that reads this review feels the same way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Will Lift You Up
Another person who wrote a review said exactly what I felt after reading this book; other than the bible....this book touched the secret recesses of my heart more than any other book I've ever read. There are places in our hearts that hold things unspoken..feelings we have that cannot be put into words. As God and His word touches these places, so did this scripturally sound allegory about suffering, pain, fear, hope, yearning, and above all, the willingness to trust our Shepherd's leading at any cost. Much like the bible, which can be mined for treasure over and over, I believe this beautiful story is the same; I will treasure it forever and re-read it often.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comforting Book
This is an extended allegory taken from Habakkuk 3:19 about God making one's feet like hind's feet in overcoming difficulties in life. The author talks about observing the animals in action for herself and discovering that "their motion was one of the most beautiful examples of exultant and apparently effortless ease in surmounting obstacles which I have ever seen." The reference to hind's feet is also found in Psalms 18:33.

The first chapter starts with an invitation to the high places. It is in the concluding few chapters that she reconnects back to the book's primary theme. Numerous Christians have been encouraged by this book and chances are you will be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserved 5 Stars
This is one of the most ministering books I have ever read. I see that the other reviewers felt the same way. Buy this book as a gift, an encouragement, a house warming present, a thank you for dinner present, a Just because present, JUST BUY THIS BOOK, and some for others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept - Falls Short
We have been using this book for about a month with our 7 & 9 year old. While the concept is great (short story presenting a problem then kids pick from 3 multi-choices after reading a scripture), I often find it frustrating for a couple reasons.

First the 3 choices are often 2 ridiculously obvious non-choices followed by the third obvious answer. Second the scriptures used are often either irrelevant or such a stretch fit to the situation presented as to be irrelevant.

It seems to me that the author had a great idea but got caught mass producing 365 situations. Hate to be a party-pooper, and happy that the book fits for some, but 'forewarned' for others who may find it like me. Strongly suggest a pre-read prior to purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sricky Situations: 365 devotions for kids
One of the best devotions we ever purchased. It keeps the interest,is short and has real life situations. Book presents good choices to help make decisions in the real world. Just loved it. Good for 7-8 year old son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I would actually give this book a 4.45-very good & helps to bring the bible to real life by using it & applying it to realistic situations. A great way to get the family to talk about all types of issues that may come up in life

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic tool -- Biblical truth applied to daily situations

5-0 out of 5 stars A great devotional Bible for very young children
One of my goals with all four of my children is to instill in them the desire to have a daily quiet time with the Lord, and so I do a short devotion with each of them before bedtime. I am using the Baby Bible Storybook with my 22-month-old. It is a hand-me-down from Big Sister, and has served us well through the years. With bright, eye-catching illustrations, simple text, hand-motions, and an easy-to-mimic prayer at the end of each story, it is perfect as a devotional Bible for very young children. My older daughter used it until she was about 3 1/2.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 2-yr old discovered this book and loves it!
We received this book in a big box of hand-me-down baby & toddler books. I just threw it in my kids' book drawer, never thinking we would read it, but my 2-yr old daughter found it and now she reads it every night, flipping through to her favorite stories. We're not a religious family, not even church-goers, but now that our daughter is so interested in learning about baby Jesus and the other stories in this book, we may try to bring religion - or at least some form of spirituality - into our lives a little more. At the least, the stories are good morality tales, on the 2-yr old level. A few of them are a bit harsh for a toddler (the lions were going to eat Daniel; Paul wanted to hurt God's people) but I tone those down when I read them. Also, it's a very sturdy & well constructed book, better than the typical board book - our copy is very old and is in good shape - and the illustrations are adorable. If you're looking for a first Bible, this is a great one!

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!!
My 19 mo. old daughter loves this book. She picks it up and brings it to me to read to her. The illustrations are colorful and captivating. Believe it or not, my daughter learned to count to 4 using this (we count the characters).

I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but the best I could find.
Many of the stories are too complex for babies and toddlers. For our 20 month-old we use only 4 of the 20 (or so) because of difficult content. Most of the actions mean you can't have the child sitting on your lap while reading the story. The actions, though, do help keep the child's attention. The pictures are simple enough for toddlers and babies, for adult tastes they definitely are too cutsey. The pages are very durable and withstand being handled by little hands. All in all, I'm still looking for a *good* Bible storybook.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's never too early to start teaching your baby about Jesus
I love this book and so does my 5 mo. old baby! The pictures are very bright and colorful. The content is perfectly designed for babies and on up to toddlers. I give this book as a baby gift to all our friends and family. It makes a wonderful gift. I have given over 25 away in the last two years. Everyone loves them . On the front page there is an area for you to write who the bible is to and who it is from along with the date. I think that this makes the baby bible very special. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Bible for Toddlers
You certainly don't need anything MORE complicated than this text for your toddler. I bought this for my 3 year old--I bought a different Bible for my 5 year old. We use these items to home church. To be honest, my 5 year old enjoys this. While my 3 year old likes for me to read to her, I'm not entirely convinced she gets what we're reading, but, I don't honestly know what they could do to make this any more simplistic.

The illustrates are good and there is not too much text on each page. The illustrations are at a toddler's level, which I like. There aren't extremely detailed and rich. They're exactly what a toddler would draw if they had artistic ability, and hand eye coordination, etc.--or could perhaps use a computer to generate images. :-)

At any rate, if you need a Bible for a toddler--ages 3-5--this is an excellent choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Toddler's Bible
The Toddler's Bible content is perfectly worded for the vocabulary of my 21 month old son. There are just a few sentences on each beatifully illustrated page so I am able to finish reading and then have him turn each page. It is a wonderful start to sharing the Bible stories with our son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect for young children!!
This wonderful collection of short Bible stories is a great way to begin teaching the scriptures. Each story is exactly four pages long, with just a few simple words on each page and delightful pictures which are each worth additional discussion. I also work with children with autism and other learning disabilities and I always recommend it to the parents of those children. Our own family copy is well-worn, but we're hoping it makes it finally through boy #3!

5-0 out of 5 stars Toddlers Bible Won't Collect Dust on Your Bookshelf
One of my children's favorites for the last 5 years! This book is simple enough to be your child's first exposure to Bible stories, and open enough for older children to enjoy: even though the stories are very short, older children love to hear me expound with more and more detail on the same stories they've loved since they could barely talk. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars kid' reading the bible and loving it????
this is a great book to get children, I'll say 2nd to 5th grade, to read and understand important stories in the bible. It is a day by day reader that should take around 7 to 10 minutes depending on reading skills. there are some illustrations to break up the copy. stories that might appear in different chapters are combined and told in one chapter with references to other chapters. violence and sexual stories are removed/kept to a minimum. Something to consider... GOd is always referred to with a male pronoun. Great indices in the back for referencing stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Wee Sing tape I still listen to.
What a great compilation of holiday songs. When I was two, my Mom bought Wee Sing and Play, Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies, Wee Sing Silly Songs, and a gazillion other tapes in the Wee Sing series, including this one. I still have all of them. I'd have to say that this one is my favorite. I'm 22 now, and Wee Sing For Christmas is the only Wee Sing tape I still listen to. Unlike many of the other Wee Sing tapes, with this one, adults join in on the chorus on most of the numbers making it sound almost like a choir. Some of the songs are sung only by adults. All of the well loved Christmas songs are on here, there's songs about caroling, Jesus's birth, and finally Santa Claus. You are sure to find your favorites here. Even if you're into your sixties and don't have any children, buy yourself a copy. But beware! Wee Sing for Christmas is only for the young, and the Young at Heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars good collection
This is a good collection of many Christmas songs. I'm not particularly fond of the tape, not liking the arrangements and children's voices all that much. But the music book that accompanies the tape is well worth having--useful season after season, with 58 different songs. Secular songs like Here Comes Santa Claus, Up on the housetop, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Deck the Halls, Here We Come A-Caroling, O Christmas Tree, and of course Jingle Bells. More traditional songs, too, like the Twelve Days of Christmas, The First Noel, Joy to the World, We Three Kings, O Come, All Ye faithful, Silent Night. And some children's favorites like The Little Drummer boy, Children, Go Where I send Thee and Go Tell It on the Mountain. There are also some unfamiliar songs, like 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime (a Huron Indian carol which is beautiful) and Three Great Kings (fingerplay) and Must Be Santa.
I recommend getting this, for the season, the mood and the kids to have their own Christmas music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the world for Christians
The first time I read this book, I thought it was going to be boring, but when I went to the second book it got really good, and I couldn't stop reading them! When I finished them I told my mom we needed to buy the other one.
I got the series to 18, but I need 16.

I recomend this book to every one. Even if your not christian, but when you read it don't be scared about what happens in the book because it is really going to happen in real life! I'm a christian myself and I'm getting ready for the rapture. This book is great I love it ! It even tells you what happens when your left behind.
All I can say is that this book is the best in the world!

4-0 out of 5 stars Left Behind
I think this is a really great series of books. The books explain the end times very well. They are easy to understand for younger readers and would be amazingly exciting for all ages. I would highly recomend these books to everyone. I would also recomend the adult series for the advanced readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just for kids?
My wife I have read the first seven Left Behind books (to each other) and are in the middle of No. 8. We find these books hard to put down as most people do. What I didn't count on was my reaction to "The Kids." About 15 months ago I ordered a used copy of book #1, just to see how the story was presented to our children. To date, my wife and I have read independently all 18 volumes!
While they are quick reads and very easy to follow, they are definitely not just for kids. They present a compelling story line parallel to the "big Kids" books, but from a point of view that makes me think our kids may not be so bad.
A story of hope for children, Left Behind presents one view of what they might face in the not so distant or unbelievable future. ALL KIDS, of any age should read these books if for no other reason than the fun of it. Action, adventure, personal relationships and scriptural authority, all the most sought after ingredients are here. I believe youngsters over about 12 years could move right over to the adult version and be hooked immediately. These books are wonderful! Thanks to LaHaye and Jenkins: keep them coming! ... Book Description

Tales about Catholic children to form your own little ones in holy wisdom and piety.

Caryll Houselander is best known for the intensity of her vision of the suffering Christ and His immeasurable love for us, a theme that she frequently spoke of with breathtaking luminosity in her many books about him.

Few know, however, of the many remarkable stories she wrote for Catholic children — delightful tales that are simple but not shallow. Indeed, like her books for adults, they maifest a tender love of Christ and His little ones not commonly found among us these days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless!
We use this book as a bedtime read aloud. Each story takes about 10-15 min. to read aloud. My kids, ages 3-14, never tire of hearing the stories. They are well written, moving, enjoyable and character-building all at the same time. Each story has a beautiful message without being preachy. And the heroes and heroines are children. Highly recommended! ... Read more
