Book Description

Having recently emerged from the tumultuous teenage years herself, Amanda Ford saw the need for a guide to help girls learn to listen to their inner voices and think for themselves. Inspired by such popular books as Simple Abundance and The Woman's Book of Courage, her book offers support to young women as they navigate one of the most confusing and challenging times of their lives. As anyone familiar with teenagers knows, there is nothing they hate more than being told what to do or how to think by "out of touch" adults. Here's the real scoop from one who knows the score. In 365 one-page essays, Ford offers stories, information, and advice on all the important issues facing young women today: boys, dating, drinking, self-esteem, fights with friends, dealing with parents, and more. Girls will find comfort, encouragement, and insight in these pages, along with suggestions for articulating and confiding their feelings, fears, and frustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest wisdom, great comfort, easy format
I am a family counselor and I recomend this book for my teenage clients and their parents. It is full of comfort. Like a big sister whose just been through all the trials of being a teenager herself, Amanda is able to offer a perspective that parents and other adults can't. The formate is helpful and user friendly. The reader can look up any topic in the contents and read one page or many on subjects ranging from boys, to peer pressure, to parents. This book encourages girls to listen to their own voice instead of following the crowd. It encourages each girl to make choices that satisfy themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars become that person you've always admired
This wonderful book offers 366 (yes, it accounts for leap years) daily tips for living the best life you can. Offers sound advice for handling boys, jobs, peer pressure, self confidence, having fun, parents, jealousy, manners, dreams, and any of hundreds of issues that pop up daily for the average teen. This book inspires you to act in your own best interests and make the most out of life.

This book includes a detailed index for looking up whatever topics concern you, as well as a list of other helpful books and websites. How cool is that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls
Be True to Yourself : A Daily Guide for Teenage Girls, is a treasure. It is an important and powerful book; a book that every teenage girl should read. Amanda Ford's writing style is simple, honest and very real. You know she is speaking from her heart and from her own experiences. This is a book with integrity. It is one that the reader can open to any page and find inspiration and guidance. Like Sarah Ban Breathnach's "Simple Abundance," Be True to Yourself has a daily message. The book will never become outdated and it can be read day after day. Each page is like a precious gem that shines on its own. There is no gift you can give that will help a girl more during her teenage years than Be True to Yourself. It will become her best friend and companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I haven't even bought this book yet but I can't wait until I do. I found it at a local bookstore because it was on a display table and the colorful cover caught my attention. So I picked it up and I love what's inside. Amanda Ford is a really good writer plus her tips and 'meditation' are really thought-provoking and fun! I hope she writes more and recommend this book to all teenage girls! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Book !!
Highly recommend !! This is the only book that I have not had to ask and encourage my 10 year old son to read. He loves this book. As a parent, I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devotions for Boys
I have three sons, and will read this book with each of them as they become ready! I was fortunate to find this book last June, just in time to start a summer devotional program for my oldest son (now 8 and in second grade). This book definitely enriched our summer! The stories are warm. The teachings are based on scripture. The main characters in each of the 365 stories are young boys that all young boys can relate to. They present solutions to issues which most young boys will likely encounter or ponder (kindness, honesty, obedience, faith, loyalty, etc.). At the end of each story is a 'How About You' section which poses questions for discussion between the parent and child. If you keep this open and non-confrontational, then this section can really encourage the child open up and to learn from you by talking, asking questions, and sometimes even make confessions to you. Because these are age-appropriate teachings presented in stories which young boys can identify with, I believe they will have a tremendous chance of impacting our young boys and keeping them on the right path when we as parents cannot be near them.

This is a great resource for parents who want help or additional resources for instilling solid Christian-based morals and decision making in their young boys. Sharing these stories with my son has been such a delight! By the way, he himself absolutely loves this book!!! We have nine more months if we read one story a day, but we will be finished much sooner because he has asked if we can start reading backwards after we finish our daily story (we average about 3 stories a day). P.S. I love to read him the day's story while waiting for his bus in the morning! What a great way to send him off to school! Best of luck. I hope you enjoy this book with your son as much as we do!

4-0 out of 5 stars Devotions for Boys
I purchased this book "sight unseen" from ... some months ago. I was interested in adding some spiritual content to the nightly reading sessions that I have with my two sons (ages 7 and 10.) I had originally intended to merely "tack on" the daily page-long devotional to the end of our sessions. I found, however, that my boys are so eager for this type of instruction, and the little stories are so compelling, insightful, and contemporary, that our 1/2-hour long sessions have been converted completely to the one page, its corresponding scripture verse, and the "How about you..." discussion questions provided. The kids actually remind me if I forget, and beg me to read them the night's selection when I try to defer if I claim I'm too tired! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
A wonderful book! I give one to everyone I know who is struggling in dealing with this type of loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!!!!!!!!
Incredible illustrations and wonderful story!! Bought it for my children as I loved the message and thought it would be good in the loss of a pet. Now I find myself in the position of supporting a friend's child as he prepares to die after a 5 yr. battle with cancer. NEVER thought I'd need it for that but was thrilled to find the main character's age (6 yrs old)is the same as this child. I know this book will help him on his journey!

4-0 out of 5 stars Eases feelings at the loss of a pet
For anyone who loves animals and has experienced the loss of one, this story supports the emotional attachment and makes us feel the pet is in a great place. We hope for our pets to be taken care of without us, and this story sets just that stage.
The illustrations support the story and are beautiful in their own right. I have given this book to three friends with children who have lost family pets and all three felt it provided a kind word at that most difficult time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
This is a must have for anyone with children or who work with children! I still can't read it without tears coming to my eyes. I am the director at a Christian preschool and we have read it many times when hearing questions of pets dying. The story helps children to cope with the lose by helping them envision their pet in a happy, beautiful place with children angels who love them. It also emphasizes the joy of one day being reunited again. Please order this book now or keep the title for future reference. I have never done a book review for Amazon but felt compelled to do one on this book! You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars All Gods Creatures Go To Heaven
This book is wonderful. It was a gift to my daughter and I highly recommend it. I know a family who has had a young (very young) girl pass away. I decided to look for this book to give to her older brother who is only 3, to show him that his baby sister is with the Angels. This book would help anyone (even adults) feel better about a death of a child. Highly recommend. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not for my kindergartener
We were ready to move from a preschool bible with simplistic writing under a picture on each page, but this book failed to capture his imagination. There are very few pictures in this book, each page is full of text. I wish I had looked at the sample page here instead of buying a shrink-wrapped copy. A friend recommended another bible from Zondervan with comics in it, and I'm ordering that today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young children
My friend bought this book for her son and I was reading it one night and was amazed at how accurate and easy for them to understand it was. We are picking one up for our 3 1/2 yr. old son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations are heartwarming
This book is a real find. The illustrations are so boyish yet sweet. The print, at 4 lines and rhyming, will keep their attention. With 3 boys, we can relate to it and will enjoy it for years to come. Geared to younger boys, probably younger than 8. Scripture used is very easy to understand. Covers qualities such as obedience, cheerfulness, being kind, brave and diligent, thankful and responsible, among others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
I have the task of planning crafts for a Wednesday night children's program. I love doing the craft, but sometimes have a hard time finding craft that work well. This book is a wonderful resource! Every craft has a drawing of the craft and some steps envolved. All patterns are included and the book is reproducibe. It is divided into two main sections: crafts for prekindergarten-kindergarten, and crafts for 1-6 graders. However, all craft seem fun and interesting. There are craft for many stories of the Bible, and sometimes 3 or 4! I am looking forward to trying all of the crafts! ... Read more

"An imaginative arrangement, preserving the on-going interest of a serial . . . The illustrations are excellent . . . and will hold the listener's eye if the book is being read aloud . . . This selection provides a built-in continuity which other collections lack."—Church Times

"Written in a lively, eaily understood style which still retains the dignity of the original . . . The luminous artwork is realistic, expressive and well-researched in detail."—School Library Journal

"Many children's books retell Bible stories. This is one of the best for its factual, sensitive and imaginative approach. The stories are allowed to speak for themselves in a panorama of scripture from Genesis to Revelation, and each is beautifully and imaginatively illustrated. [Here is] storytelling par excellence, clear, uncomplicated, concise, superlative."—Churchman

2-0 out of 5 stars The Children's Bible in 365 Stories
I use this book for teaching Sunday School. I'm planning on giving a copy to everyone that teaches Bible Stories to our kids at church because it edits the stories and gives a paraphrase that is accurate to the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best bedside Bible tool
This bible is an excellent tool for reading the bible daily with your children. It is well written with excellent illustrations. Each story is short enough to read just before turning out the lights.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST Bible Story Book
Our family (we have 8 children) has read a number of Bible story books. This one stands out to us as THE BEST. It is clearly written so that even the younger ones can follow well. Also, it is written in an interesting manner that the children always want more. A sign of a real winner! With the stories being so short there is always time to read at least one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, artfully Illustrated
Although we have been using Batchelor's Children's Bible since our oldest daughter was three years old, she has really grown into it as she progressed through Kindergarten and First Grade. As the Chaplain of a Christian elementary school I am recommending it as a Bible Primer for our first graders to begin their own disciplined daily Scripture readings. The illustrations are artfully and historically authentic without being too complex for a young person's concentration. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaitlyn Hennessy Bak Middle School of the Arts period 3
Melody Carlson continues her captivating writing in It's my Life: Diary of a teenage girl (book 2.) This book was just as wonderful as the first. Caitlin O' Conner's life never stops being interesting. She has many temptations with her new religion and has problems with her friends. In this novel Caitlin's church youth group goes on a mission to Mexico and there she feels she found her purpose in life, helping others who are less fortunate than her. This mission changes her views on a lot of things and will change yours too. Melody Carlson sucks you in and keeps you in till you reach that back cover and that's when you go buy the next book in the series. Any teen girl will love this book because we can all relate to Caitlin's life. That is why I give it 5 stars, but you must read all of the books in the series in order to get the full effect. But, trust me you'll want to read them all once you've read one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diary of A teenage girl, book 2 is Awesome!
It was as exciting as i thought the first one was! In this book she goes more in-depth into life's challenges of any teenage girl living right now. Carlson sure knows how to capture a readers attention. Every single issue she writes about in the book is something that almost all girls can relate too. The very moving storyline keeps you reading from the beginning to the end. You can's stop reading it! If you're a girl going through some tough times right now. This book, and her first one, are the perfect books to read. You'll find out that a lot of things she writes about is very similar to what you're going through. So check this book out! ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Lindsay Bein book review: Diary of a teenage girl.
The book that I have chosen is called Diary of a Teenage Girl. This book is about a girl who wants to fit in but still abide by what she thinks is what God wants from her. Her mother and father do not get along. She is constantly fighting with her father. At one point she gets into the popular group and learns it isn't so great. She goes to a party and there is drinking, so she gets drivin home by her friend's boyfriend, who soon likes her. Then the young man in her youth group dies and she is faced with a great deal of pain, so she talks about it with her aunt who went to the church. Her two best friends also went to the church. They are a boy and a girl and had been going out for a long time. They decided they would be together forever so it would be okay to have sex. Now her friend is faced with a more serious problem, she is pregnant. Once again she looks to her aunt for advice, and her aunt takes her friend in, but her friend still has to work and take care of the baby that is about to be born.
I think this book is a good way to learn new coping skills. This young girl is faced with some very rough problems and her coping skill is praying or talking. I think this would be a good book for all teenagers to read if they need a little pick-up.
When I started reading this book I couldn't set it down. I didn't set it down until I was completely done. I would recommend this book.
It would also be a good book for parents to read about the every day troubles teenagers face. It is a very good book abou making good choices, and one that I would give to friends to read. It was a hard book to find, but I'm sure with a little help from the internet it can be found.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for Christian Teens!
I loved the first Diary of a Teenage Girl and the 2nd installment didn't disappoint. We need more books out there that display Christian values. Melody Carlson is an excellent storyteller! Another author you might want to check out is Edee Wilcox. She is a new author who has written a book for those girls who have already overstepped the boundaries of purity and are struggling to get back to a relationship with God.

5-0 out of 5 stars We loved this book!
In this wonderful book (published by Moody Press), author Helen L. Taylor takes the Christian classic Pilgrim's Progress and reworks it for younger readers. She simplified the words and concepts, but stayed remarkably close to the original story. The chapters are nice and short, which makes this an excellent bedtime read, which is how I read it to my nine-year-old son and eleven-year-old daughter.

This is really two stories in one book, the first story tells of Christian, a small boy living in the City of Destruction, who hears Evangelist talking about the Celestial City where the great King lives. Christian becomes a pilgrim, and sets off for the Celestial City. Along the way he has many encounters and learns many lessons. The second story is about Christiana, a friend of Christian, who sets out with others to walk the same path, and they encounter many trials, often different than the ones faced by Christian.

This is an excellent book. It is jam-packed with Christian concepts, which you can then stop, at a convenient chapter break, and explain. Indeed, if I have one complaint, it's that I wish that this book had a study guide to accompany it! My children were a little disquieted by the martyrdom of one character, but as this is also a part of the Christian experience, I am glad that this book addressed it.

So, I must say that my children and I all loved this book. As a matter of fact, I think that I will make reading it a yearly tradition (for a while, anyway). We highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both children and adults
This is a great adaptation of Bunyan's classic Christian work. It makes for great reading at bedtime, and though, being only twenty I have no children, I have found I enjoyed this book a great deal. It details the account of Christian, and later his (in the original book) wife's journey to Heaven (the Bright City). It has been a few years since I've read this, but I've read it four or five times, enjoying it immensely.

The central problem (and this complaint is against Bunyan, not Helen E. Taylor) is, although I have read or heard it used to be a common thing back in that time era (1500 - 1700) to name the characters after whatever virtue or allegorical element the author wishes to state. Bunyan takes his allegory, and like Lewis in THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE stop telling the story and beat you with the allegory. (Narnia is one of my favorites, and although I like LWW, it has earned the position of my least favorite Narnia because several things don't jibe with me, or, instead of allowing readers to learn or draw conclusions, Lewis specifically dominates and draws an entirely too explicit comparison to Christianity. It is more personal taste than anything - though I like allegory, if one gets to explicit (like Aslan dying, or, in this book, when Christian sees a picture of King David) the story loses its spell over me.

However, this is still a great book. Highly recommended, and if you won't want to wade through the much harder original, adults should go with this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
During my childhood nearly 40 years ago) I was utterly fascinated by this book. It stood out as one of the most interesting books of my childhood days, and it made an indelible impression on me. (Other favorites were C.S. Lewis' Narnia series, Little Princess, & Secret Garden). But back to Little Pilgrim's Progress: I'm not sure why this book was so intriguing to myself and my siblings, perhaps because the little pilgrem faced real dangers and even death??
Well, recently this book came up in conversation -- I hadn't thought of it for years -- and I dug out a copy, and started to read it. Moments later my nearly 6-year-old daughter came up and asked me if I would read it to her. My nearly 4-year-old son also wanted to listen. (I read freqently to my children, and they often are able to enjoy stories beyond their age level, but still I thought this would be too advanced to hold their attention.) But still, I decided to try. Of course, when I read I simplified or explained the language from time to time (some of the wording is old-fashioned). But to my astonishment, my children were absolutely riveted. The chapters in this book are short, and the children kept begging me to read more!! I was especially amazed that my 4-year-old remained totally engaged in the story (there are occasional illustrations, but it isn't a picture book; they were just listening). We finished the Christian part of the book in a few reading sessions over 3 days. (We later read the Christiana story, but the children didn't find it as interesting).
Conclusion: I'm not saying that this book would usually be of interest to such young children, but only wanted to comment that it can be a very exciting book and can provide much opportunity for thoughtful discussion with a parent.
Oh, I will add one more thing -- shortly after reading the book, one day my son asked if he could change his name to "Help" (like in the story). And later, he asked if he could be called "Greatheart". So now we jokingly have added those names to his middle name. Also, after reading the story concepts came up a lot in conversations over the following days and weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent example of faith in action
I read this book when I was a child and remember being quite intrigued by it. It confronts some of the deepest fears and anxieties that go hand in hand with trying to be a God-fearing, moral human being. Although I didn't realize it at the time, this book provided (and continues to provide) excellent examples of the hardships and sacrifices that result from chosing the moral path in life, and as a result it introduces a view of Christianity that stresses not only redemption, but also the self-discipline and courage that is required to confront the evil around us every day. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for kids
My mom read this book to me and my brother and sisters. It was a good book. At times it was hard to understand and with so many people in the book, it's not hard to see why. After some time, I got the hang of it. It is an exciting book at the end. Not the best book my mom has read, but still good! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a great help!!!!
My daughter Laura was having problems in school. We had her tested and they said she needed to focus more. They suggested that we set aside a time to read together at home. We had not been doing that much. The cover to this book is so bright and colorful she went for it instantly! We thumbed through it and right there in the store, she tried reading the stories. I could see that they were simple enough for her but would also challenge her in her reading.

I can't say enough about this Young Reader's Bible. Laura has learned to love reading because of it. To me, that is a miracle because she was in danger of being held back before. These are familiar stories so they draw a child in. Even kids who have not gone to Sunday school before will find these stories exciting, and will want to read on. And the pictures are a BONUS.

I would recommend this book to anyone who asks about a children's Bible, and I have done so. It has been fun to see how many kids from church now pack their Young Reader's Bible with them. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Young Reader's Bible - Standard
I wanted a Bible story book for a 12 year old Chinese girl who has been in America only 8 months. When she arrived she knew very little or if any English.

I feel the book is very attractive with easy reading. I was drawn to the cover in comparison to other books I reviewed, in that the cover had adults and not only children.

The Bible stories are well chosen and which carries a historical thread throughout the book.

Earlier I sent her a more "primer" Bible story book which she told me she can now read.

I choose it because it is a Lovely Book. ... Read more

Book Description

Who are the saints, why are they important, and what can today's children learn from them? In Loyola Kids Book of Saints, the first book in the Loyola Kids series, author Amy Welborn answers these questions with exciting and inspiring stories, real-life applications, and important information about these heroes of the church. This delightful collection of saints' lives, written in a storybook style for children eight to twelve, explains how saints becomes saints, why we honor them, and how they help us even today.

Divided thematically, the book features more than sixty saints from all over the world and from all across time, including our newest saints, such as St. Katharine Drexel; popular saints, such as St. Anthony of Padua; and Blesseds, such as Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. Each story tells about a saint and encourages readers to consider how they might apply what they learn from the story to their everyday lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Religious Education teachers.
I teach second-grade Religious Education at our local parish. I first saw this book at the library and thoght it might be fun to start a class feature called "Saint of the Week." It quickly became the kids' favorite part of the weekly class. The accounts of the lives of these Saints are all lively and interesting enough to keep the class's attention, and the author still manages to be reverent in tone. Older kids, I am sure, would also enjoy the stories, which are long enough to contain some very interesting details, but not so long as to lose the audience's attention. Then again, how can you lose a class's attention when you tell them the true story of, for example, St. Thomas More or St. Joan of Arc? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely series for the Christian Homeschool
I have been using this series as I teach my six chidren at home. The authors have done an excellent job of bringing us the best of the original McGuffy Readers, returning to the contents of the first series, not those later published under his name. My children are discovering a nobler time and way of life as they learn the basics with these fine readers. The study guide is simple to use with many practical exercises and examples. The only reason for less than five stars seems to be the quality of the paper and binding. In the noble effort to keep costs down, the durability of the product suffers. I am hoping for a hard bound edition. Should one appear, the publishers should be prepared for greater sales than the previous edition. Such excellent content deserves an equally excellent binding with the ability withstand being read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Demanding Lessons for Young People and Adults.
These are the original 1837 McGuffey Readers before the secular revisions, with slight revisions of archaic grammar. Four Readers and a Study Guide show you how to teach your children to reason cogently, speak persuasively, write clearly--all in a Christian framework. Each lesson has moral and intellectual content, and offers an impressive vocabulary. Words progress from 'learn,' 'keep,' in the early grades to 'assiduity, profligate, efficacious, calcaneous, penury, communition, execrated' in high school. Lessons are followed by spell/define exercises, and thoughtful questions. Ex.: "Is it not better to be industrious and possess a good name than to possess many riches?" "What is the effect of making public opinion the rule of life?" "Have we not reason to rejoice that we live where we may hear the glad tidings of salvation?" Each lesson begins with a basic rule of reading and elocution. Study Guide ties each original lesson to a biblica! l theme. There are 10 years of 36 weekly lessons (grades 1-10). Instructions on teaching reading aloud, public speaking, good writing habits, memorization, logic, love for language as one of God's gifts. Many famous authors like Blackthorn, Shakespeare, Bacon, Irving figure prominently. By the time a child begins the third reader he will have surpassed most of today's high schoolers. Mastery of the fourth reader puts him beyond most college students. Any adult can read the selections with profit. You'll be awed at what was once accomplished in American schools, and resolved that your children grow up with the same advantages. The lessons cover a broad range of worthy topics including history, geography, poetry, and virtue. These are just reading selections, however, and do not as such offer instruction in phonics or grammar. Some of the 19th-century perspecitves are quaint, even funny. These lessons are intended for Christian parents who homeschool their children. ! I'm happy to learn from them myself. I see the sublime ed! ucational value of these lessons, and see the great need for moral and spiritual training for young people. These lessons will provide those in spades. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific for Ages 3-8
This "Read Aloud" series is by far the most enjoyable children's bible stories we have found. The illustrations are wonderful and the story selection in each volume is varied and interesting, but not overwhelming. Because of the writing style, the stories are very captivating for little children to hear. The use of pattern and repetion brings the action to life and the word choices are within their range. A friend told me it has been a fabulous resource for her sunday school class. Best of all, when my son began to read, these books proved to be the best and most interesting early readers for him because that same pattern, repetetion and word choice that was great for young listeners is perfect for young readers. My son now reads to his siblings and they all love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Traditional Children's Bible Story Book!
This series is by far the best of the best. The stories and illustrations are fabulous!

Children often find the illustrations in other Bible story books scary or weird. While the illustrations are true to the times in terms of dress, they are exaggerated in size, yet simple. For example, Zaccheus, "who was to little to reach high things..." is shown as a small man in HUGE chair. (p. 6-7)

The text is delightful! For example in "The Boys and Girls and Jesus," the children come to see Jesus as part of families, i.e. "Every day lots of daddies and mommies came to hear Jesus talk. Grandpas and grandmas and friends came, too. Some days - there were too many people to get inside a house. Then, the daddies and the mommies and the grandpas and the grandmas and the friends stood right out in the sunshine..." (p.71-74)

Great for older children to read to younger children. The best part is adults will enjoy this book too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great toddler introduction to Bible stories
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book and requests it nightly. The language is simple for toddlers to understand, yet is Biblically accurate. The book summarizes the stories at the end and sometimes them a question they can easily apply. This book is a sweet way to tell Bible stories to the little ones, yet deep enough that older children will continue to get more out of the stories. The illustrations are simple and catch the children's attention. I plan to own all 4 volumes as we have worn out the first two already!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars SPELL BOUND
Our school used this series (all 4 volumes)with children ages 3-7 for at least 10 years. We had to purchase a set for each class because the children read and reread them so often.

The simplicity and predictablilty of the text coupled with the striking illustrations produces spell bound audiences of young listeners, usually begging you to read "just one more".

This series is a wonderful introduction to the Bible !

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Ms. Lindvall does an excellent job of relaying classic Bible stories in a manner that is poignant, yet developmentally appropriate for young minds. It is evident that she has taken the utmost care and reverence in adapting the text. The beautiful illustrations by H. Kent Puckett accompany the stories in a captivating, powerful way. There are few enough words per page, and the illustrations are so well done, that the combination makes this series an excellent resource for sharing the Bible with children, and maintaining their attention long enough to deliver the Message. Each book includes 5 Bible Stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Stories include those such as that of Creation, Joseph and His Coat, Jesus Stills the Storm, and Noah and the Ark. ... My church has been giving the NIV New Adventure Bible as a presentation bible for our new 1st graders. Recent revisions of that edition sent us looking for a new choice. We like this one. The NIrV text is good for this age group. The art is colorful and appealing - drawn to look like children's art. 5-0 out of 5 stars I thank God for allowing me to encounter this book
My son, Dylan was stillborn at seven months. I miss my sweet boy with every ounce of my being. I have read several books but none have helped me on my road to healing such as this one has. He speaks to the bereaved Christian parent like none other. This book has provided a still and calm in my life through this tumultous journey and I am thankful. I plan on buying this book for several of my friends and highly recommend it to those looking for a little peace through the death of a loved one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful comfort for those who are greiving
Shortly after I bought this book, several people I knew passed on and Zig's words and insights about comfort, peace and wisdom were a real shining light for me - helping me write and say things that brought comfort to others.

It is a powerful book that is worth reading and re-reading. It is definitely a foundational book for every Christian's library.

The only reason I didn't give it FIVE stars was because he didn't address a loss that stings even worse than death - and that is rejection by a loved one.

With spousal and parental abandonment going on in record numbers, I think there is a great need for a work (like Zig's Confessions of a Greiving Christian) on healing the grief occasioned by rejection and abandonment.

He spoke frequently about how much love there was (and is!) in his family and I loved hearing about it and I love his openess in sharing his heart with all the world, but there are a lot of families that don't have that strong anchor of love at their core, and they need healing and support too.

Nonetheless, Zig's book is a treasure. It's too good to borrow at the library. This is something you'll want for highlighting and referring back to - again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the way to heal a broken heart....
I picked up the book because my husband's father was dying, and I didn't know how to comfort him or his family. Up till that point in my life, I hadn't lost anyone close to me. Mr. Ziglar was so open with his grief and I found myself weeping at nearly every chapter! But in the end, just like Mr. Ziglar, I felt like I was basking in the most unbelievable love and grace...and peace. I purchase this book for everyone I know who has lost someone close. On final note, his description of Psalm 23 has changed me.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SPIRITUAL CONTExT FOR A GRIEVING MOM
The very "meat" of this book was spiritually enriching for me, as my 9 year daughter was killed in an auto accident one year ago. Although I am a Christian--I had many questions and thoughts that this book addressed to ease my pain. Although it doesn't provide answers, per se, it does provide assurance that in heaven--our questions won't seem so important after all. I know where my sweetheart is, and I know I'll meet her there again someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be blessed & comforted reading this book on Grief!
Zig Ziglar shares his own story of his daughter Suzan's death and his own grief. By doing so, his words remind us to look to God, who gives us comfort and encourages us and deepens our faith and understanding. The book helps to show us that God will help us get through the difficult times not only in our own grief, but in ministering to others who are experiencing grief themselves. We first purchased Zig Ziglar's book "Confessions of a Grieving Christian" to give to our son when he lost two very good friends in an accident. At that time, we only purchased one copy for our son. We began reading and looking through it before we gave it to him, and just couldn't put it down so we then obtained a copy for ourselves as well. We have had the pleasure of hearing Zig Ziglar speak in person before. He's well known around the country as a motivational speaker who shares his humor and enthusiasm. This book has encouraged and blessed us. Our son has read it through and is now sharing with other family and friends what he has read in hopes of helping them through their grief. I write this in memory of these two young men who died and their families who are grieving their loss. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "I WILL PRAISE YOU FOR I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE."
This book is a great introduction to Psalms for you to share with your children. I bought this right away because since I was very young Psalm 139 has been very close to my heart. Oh but when I opened the book and read it to my child I had to read through tears. This is such a beautiful book with delightful yet simple illustrations. (Way to go Kristi!) Keep in mind the book is paraphrased from the Bible and not verbatim but a fantastic translation!

When your child is older and can read Psalm 139 (from the HOLY BIBLE) on his or her own it will make even more sense and beauty. The entire book is enthralling but especially the illustration inspired from verses 14-15 of Psalms 139! This particular illustration has a see-through version of a Mother's tummy with the baby inside. How perfect!

I highly recommend this book for parents to read to their child regularly! It's a very special book that illustrates a glimmer of our OMNIPOTENT AND OMNIPRESENT GOD! You won't be disappointed!

Thank you Joel!

5-0 out of 5 stars God knows me!
I loved this book just as much as my 3 year old children! It is a great depiction of this very special verse in the Bible that reveals how wonderful God made each one of us. The pictures (computer- generated) draw you into the story of God's beautiful creation of the human body. Every parent should buy this book and start reading it to even the very very young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort for the Littlest
What a fantastic job Mr. Anderson does in taking a Pslam that has always brought me great comfort and peace and bringing it down to the world of a child. Even I was awed by the simple words, "God knows me." I plan on reading this to my boys every night at bedtime. What a wonderful last thought before turning out the lights: that to God "even the darkness would be as bright as daytime..." The illustrations are warm and colorful. Showing things that aren't there as if they were. Great way to show kids how the hands of God hold you. And I like the fact that the child in the book could be either a boy or a girl. Great for both! Overall, I plan on giving this book as a gift to every family I know. It's a MUST have!

5-0 out of 5 stars God Knows Me! Is Great
I am a Children's Minister and received this book as a gift from one of my parents. The illustrations of this book are fantastic! They are top to bottom and side to side-totally illustrated. Psalm 139 is a great Psalm for children to understand how God "knows" them. Mr. Anderson takes you on a tour through a child's mind and helps them understand that God is always with them. From being in the dark to waking up-God is always there. I recommend this book to reinforce: God's presence, Friendship, as well as illustrating faith. At a great price buy one for every parent you know!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old is enthralled!
This is such a peaceful and gentle book. The airbrushed illustrations combine with the simple message that God is lovingly with us, no matter what, where ever we go. 5-0 out of 5 stars The First Story for a New Child of God
Walt Wangerin, professor, teacher, writer, pastor, and most of all, child of God, has given us a precious gift: an illuminating storybook about God's gift of baptism. This book fills a void in the world of children's literature, drawing children into their rightful place in the household of faith, The Church. The text is written in rhyming couplets, a style that children love; after hearing it a few times, they can supply the rhymes that follow each line (as they do with Dr. Seuss books). The story is told from the perspective of creation itself, rejoicing at the baptism of the child, and his/her place in the world. This is done gracefully and lovingly. The illustrations are glorious! The artist, Gerardo Suzan, has a simple, delightful style that children can interpret easily; yet included within the simple paintings are classic symbols of creation and Christian iconography. The illustrations and the text are a perfect marriage. The back of the storybook includes scriptural and theological clarification of the story and paintings. This is helpful for parents with their own questions about baptism; I believe that quality children's books offer something for the adults as well as for the children. This is a "lap" book, something to be enjoyed and shared for families. Baptism is the perfect occasion to give this book;on the baptismal day, have the family, the sponsors, the pastors, and the whole congregation sign the book as a remembrance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars prince caspian
Lucy, Peter, Susan, and Edmund have viseted narnia before, and they will visit it again. Narnia is a country that you can only get into if you believe. If you enter it in one place, you can not enter though that place again, once you come out. The four kids end up in Narnia and they are on a mission. Prince Caspians father, Miraz is trying to kill him. The kids have to stop him with the help of Aslan, the lion, and Trumpkin the dwarf. Also many other mystical animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prince Caspian/Buba Jones
I'm doing a report on the book Prince Caspian. The author is C.S.Lewis, who also wrote the novels The Magicians Nephew,The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and four other fabulous books. Of a scale of one to ten I would give it a nine. The book Prince Caspian was published in 1956.The main characters are Peter, Lucy, Susan, Edmund, and Prince Caspian. Prince Caspian isn't exactly a prince because he does not come from the same family as the king. Peter, Edmund, Lucy, and Susan are kings and queens of Narnia. The book Prince Caspian is the fourth of the seven novels of Narnia. The world of Narnia is a magical world with fauns, other stuff like giants. The main characters want to defeat the evil king Miraz, and put Caspian on the throne. The characters Edmund and Miraz have a duel and eventually King Edmund wins and mirazes army surrenders and they put the new King Caspian on the throne. I think that the moral of this story is "have faith".The characters learn to trust their little sister Lucy, although she is allot younger. I also think that all of the characters become more adventurous. I really loved reading this book, and suggest it to everyone from 6 to 13. I think that it is better to read it themselves, but it doesn't matter about that. It is still a very good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Had Expected
I have read this book, as well as many of Peretti's other books (This Present Darkness, Piercing the Darkness, The Oath). And though I have given a "thumbs up" to the "Darkness" books, I was disappointed with this read.

Now to be fair, I had read the "Darkness" books first, so I felt I had a taste of what made a "Peretti" book entailed. I didn't necessarily expect visible spiritual warfare, but I did expect it to be more of a thriller. Unfortunately for me, it was not.

The book's content: John Barrett, a news anchor, attempts to find the cause and reasoning behind his father's death and in the process, moves from a secular, worldly viewpoint to a more godly one, which forever changes his life.

I am surprised at all the reviews claiming it was a thriller, and maybe I should read it again at a later date to get a fresh look at it, but to be honest, I know I never will. I found myself skimming through much of the book, looking for more "meat" than I was finding. Also, in talking to other friends of mine who read the book, they seemed to agree with me. It was a bit longer and slower than it really needed to be, especially given Peretti's track record.

I suppose the bottom line is not to read the book with any expectations, as I did, and you may find it to be very enjoyable read--not all the reviews on here can be wrong! But as far as its ranking stands with other Christian fiction novels out there, I'd have to say it didn't "shine" any brighter than some other choices out there for me. Also note that had the grading scale allowed it, I would have given it a 2.5 stars out of 5 rather than a 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prophet - from the perspective of a 13-year-old
I first stumbled upon Frank Peretti's work when my brother started reading them, and I must confess that he was instantly one of my favorite authors. Prophet might not be his best, but I would recommend it to anybody. It had my hooked until the end. All I can say is: Peretti, you've done it again!

I really enjoyed this book. The author, which is my favorite, has once again fabricated a spellbinding tale that will keep the reader guessing and wanting more. The ending was one of the best parts of the book and, to me, brought all the pieces together. If you liked this book, you may want to try The Oath, Peircing the Darkness and This Present Darkness, all by Frank Peretti.
