Book Description Reviews (4)
Wonderfully written by Josephine Nobisso and luminously illustrated by Katalin Szegedi, The Weight of a Mass, is an original cultural folk tale based upon a true story. The story reads and looks like a fairy tale. A ragged, destitute widow arrives at the kingdom's prosperous bakery and begs only a crust of bread in exchange for offering a royal wedding Mass for the baker. The baker scoffs and tears off a tiny piece of tissue paper on which he writes the words: One Mass, intending to place them it on the scale to find out the value of a Mass. Much to his surprise, when he drops a piece of old bread on the other side of the scale, it does not tip. So, he enlists his son to stack more and more baked goods on top of the scale. Out come cherry topped cupcakes, marzipan apple, filled chocolates, poppy seed cakes, rolls, donuts, fruitcakes, cream cakes, berry tarts, poached pears, plum pudding, candied fruits, almond confetti, crsuhed walnuts, and eventually the royal wedding cake. The father, his son, the old woman, and others in the kingdom come to learn the weight of a Mass. The story includes an author's postscript recounting the original story as told by Father Stanislaus from Luxembourg who tells of a conversation between a butcher and a Captain of the Forest Guards that was interrupted by an old woman begging a morsel of meat in exchange for a Holy Mass intention. As a result of the miracle, the Captian began attending Mass daily and one of his sons later received a calling to the priesthood. I cannot say praise this book enough. It's a genre that is sorely needed in children's literature. Not only is it a beautiful book, but it teaches about the richness of the Mass and the priceless presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. The paintings are wonderful, particularly those of an arched interior of the Cathedral and the bishop holding up the Eucharist at the wedding Mass. Do yourself a favor. Purchase this book for your children, your grandchildren, and any other children whom you love.

It is the unique focus on the personality and power of the Holy Spirit which separates this work from so many others. The call to action was spoken into his life, and into the lives of a New York City street gang, headed by Nicky Cruz, in the late sixties. The Cross and the Switchblade is a modern day classic of God's power and grace infusing the most dangerous and difficult layer of society; the violent gangs. The message is life changing, then and now.
I found this book on the Washington Monument (Mall) grounds July 4th in the very late 60's or very early 70's (I can't remember exactly) after the police broke up a very large demonstration against the war in Viet Nam. The place was littered with many items left after a "hippy vs police" riot broke out, and as the police deployed tear gas and battled the demonstrators up Pennsylvania Avenue. It was an exciting day, but it also proved to be a day which my eyes were truly opened to the power of Lord... after I started to read the worn copy I had found in the mud. I couldn't put it down. This book opened the eyes of my understanding in so many ways, and started my path towards the recovery from the battlefields of southeast asia, from the struggle to survive in the brutal climate of war. From the conflicts of doing my job as a warrior, and seeing the death and destruction of lives all around me, knowing that the bullets and bombs were not enough. I was a shell of what I should have been at 25, a survivor a fighter, enduring the ravages of the human race and coming out physically capable but mentally tormented. This book started my comeback, my recovery, my search, my seeking and showed me an open door which, once I entered in, I was given my life back. I can never forget that, I can only praise God for the revelation.

Book Description J.R.R. Tolkien was a believer in Christ who wove his faith into his writing. His heroes fight a war against the forces of darknessa war in which every decision counts. Walking with Frodo leads you through 9 pairs of choicesdarkness or light, betrayal or loyalty, deception or honesty, just to name a fewand reveals what the Bible has to say about each. This young adult devotional will help apply those truths to decisions you make every day, sending you on a life-changing journey of your own.Are you ready for the journey? Reviews (6)
We need to get out of Middle-Earth and into the real world. You cannot find strength, guidance, and spiritual power in a fictional collection of stories, regardless of whether or not they are allegories of the Christian's journey. "Walking With Frodo"?! Is this meant to equate Frodo with Jesus Christ? Reality check: Frodo was never real, Middle-Earth was never real, and all the events which took place within Tolkien's world never happened. Christ was real, however. The battles He faced and the battles we face are very real, and we therefore should not waste our time in thinking that this garbage will assist us in them.
Given even this purpose "Walking With Frodo" does not work well. Ms. Arthur draws comparisons between Tolkien's work and Christian thought that are thin and conclusory. She begins, for example, by describing Gandalf's battle with the flaming Balrog. With no more support than that, she immediately tells the reader that of course the parallel creature in Christianity is Satan. (Tolkien was once asked if his work could be compared to Wagner's "Ring" cycle of operas. Tolkien answered that both works contained references to rings and that was the end of the comparison. The Balrog/Satan comparison strikes me as similarly light-weight.) Ms. Arthur draws other comparisons and conclusions in a similar vein, using very little Tolkien material to support them. I find it hard to imagine that any young person with a good grounding in Christianity to begin with, is going to obtain anything more in this volume that could not be gained merely by reading the Bible itself or participating in related group activities. If the purpose is to attract young people who are LOTR fans to consider Christian values, I fear that any young person intelligent enough to read and understand Tolkien's work will see through "Walking With Frodo" as a thin attempt to tie Christian ideas to the coattails of Tolkien's current popularity. I note also that although Ms. Arthur identifies Prof. Tolkien as a Christian, she does not mention that he was Catholic. (Likewise, C.K. Chesterton is identified as a Christian in a footnote, with no mention of his Catholicism.) While Protestants and Catholics may enjoy closer relations now, we know that this was not always so, either in this country or in Tolkien's time in Britain. We should remember that it was not too long ago that some Americans questioned whether a Catholic could lead this country as its President. In a book aimed at young people who may not be fully aware of the circumstances of Catholic/Protestant relations, (and as one who has had a Catholic education through college) I would have liked to have seen the fact of Tolkien's Catholicism mentioned.

Book Description Darling, did you know that I dream about you . . . Everyone longs to be loved deeply by someone, and Rebecca St. James is no different, as demonstrated by her hit song Wait for Me. But while Rebecca shares the same desires as other young people, her resolve to remain sexually pure until marriage is not as common in our society. Using Scripture, pop culture, and her own experience as a point of reference, Rebecca paints a relevant and appealing picture of the value of waiting. But Rebecca also reaches out with compassion to those who have already made mistakes and reveals the mercy and healing that God brings. Reviews (9)
Yes, it is possible to wait, she says, through God's Word, her experiences, and the experiences of others. She doesn't just say it either. She also writes practical stuff for people who want to take waiting seriously. But she doesn't leave out people who may not technically be virgins in this book. There is always forgiveness, and people can always start anew, because --- let's face it --- people are really good at making mistakes. All in all, an interesting book written simply that was not boring in any way.
Second, being pure before marriage will likely include a no french kissing rule. Any touching or physical expression that results in sexual arousal should be avoided before marriage. This is what the Church has always taught, and Rebecca St. James message fit's in fine. bethringsmuth ought to read "The Good News about Sex & Marriage" and come to grips with authentic Christian sexuality before bashing someone as prudish.
But its possible, Rebecca reminded me the importance of waiting. What an encouraging book. It'll encourage you to wait until your married. Its perfect whether your in your teens, 20s or older. I'm glad that I got it. I'd like to recommend another book that's just as good "All It's Meant to Be by Bryan Clark."
My real ideological and spiritual problem is that this book denies sexuality as a part of life, and only accepts that humans are sexual and sensual after they are married. Sensuality--letting our God-given senses really work to see, feel, smell, hear, and taste this fascinating planet--should be a part of every day of our lives, from small child to mature adult. Much of falling in love, as studies have shown, lies in brain chemicals. Our pupils dilate as we gaze at our beloved, our skin's sensitivity is heightened when we feel our loved one's touch, and our brain chemistry is altered as hormones are released. Pheromones are no myth. Backing up this natural progression of chemistry, there should be trust, open communication, and shared dreams. Successfully falling in love, and staying that way, involves physicality. Rebecca's main advice, aside from all the preaching on why "purity" is best, is frighteningly prudish--we are not supposed to let any part of our body enter anybody else's body! This means no french kissing, folks. Maybe this advice is good for the very young (12-13 year olds) or very immature, sensually repressed people, as it truly denies the sensuality in love; or maybe it's good because parents want to feed their children this myth of "purity"; or maybe this is comforting for those people who are unprepared and ill-equipped for sexual, loving relationships. But growing a true bond with another human being must involve some level of physicality, and must not deny sexuality or the innate sensuality of love until the wedding night. Where is the trust in that? Where is the open communication? Maybe Rebecca shouldn't be giving advice on sex and marriage, since she's apparently never been married, never been in love, and never even been truly kissed. ... Read more | |
