5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Bible
I purchased this book for my daughter to begin introducing her to God and the Bible. She LOVES this book (her Biba). The stories are very short and the pictures very colorful to help hold her interest. She 'reads and re-reads' this book herself (she's 22 mos old) and carries it with her to Sunday School. The handle makes it very easy to carry for her and the clasp helps keep the book closed when not in use. An excellent introduction to the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute and to the point
This book is a sweet start for Bible stories. It has 10 stories which are: What God Made, Noah's Ark, Baby Moses, David the Shepherd, Daniel, Baby Jesus, Jesus at the Temple, Zacchaeus, Jesus stops a storm, and Jesus is Alive. The stories are short (about 6 sentences long) which is enough to give a child the "gist" of the stories without being too wordy and losing their interest. Some stories are in rhyme. I think this is a nice way to introduce little ones to the greater, more complex Bible stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars For both babies and parents.
Kids would love the book design: attractive handle and just the right size would make them want to bring it everywhere. Colorful illustrations, pleasant to look at but not too much details for the young eyes and imagination. Story is appropriately short and simple, with Scriptural verses that would make them appreciate the Bible. Parents would find value in those the sturdy baby-proofed pages that would last till your next baby! Reading this to your child would be a joy. Don't worry about your story telling skills: you'll get hints (cheat-lines) at the bottom of the pages suggesting actions or movement that would capture your child's attention. I gave this as a gift to my niece, and my sister requested for the rest of the series..... (which were just as good!).

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR TODDLERS
THE SIMPLE LANGUAGE, PICTURES OF ANIMALS AND CHILDREN, AND SUGGESTIONS FOR COOPERATIVE PLAY MAKE THIS BOOK ONE OF MY TODDLER'S FAVORITE. HE LIKES THE STURDY PAGES, LITTLE CLASP (GOOD FOR FINE MOTOR SKILLS), AND HANDLE (TODDLERS LIKE ANYTHING WITH A HANDLE). I LIKE THE SIMPLE BIBLE STORIES AND THE POINT AND NAME ANIMALS. THIS BOOK IS PERFECT FOR INTRODUCING BABIES TO YOUR FAITH. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I read it to my kids so much I need a new copy!
Although it uses a comic book style, this book is both reverent and comprehensive. It tells the Bible stories from the creation in Genesis to the prophecies in Revelations. My copy is dog eared because I have read it cover to cover with each of my children. All have enjoyed it. My oldest is an Agnostic and has gone on to analyzing more advanced religeous topics. My middle one is a true believer and likes to tell everyone about Abraham and his other impressive ancestors. I am still reading it to my youngest. He makes sound effects to dramatize the Old Testament Miracles. The drawings ae not great art, but they are realistic and effectively convey the meaning of the stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book
My ten-year-old son reads this book nearly as much as his comic books! It's in comic book format. His friends enjoy it as well. His friends' parent's ask me where I got it. They want one for their children! It's not an actual Bible, but Bible stories. We own quite a few Bible story books, but none that he has read as willingly as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comic book collection of bible stories--in order; must buy
The "Picture Bible", written and illustrated by Iva Hoth & Andre Le Blanc respectively, is more than a worthwhile book to read, unprecedented & as well an auspicious find. THIS BOOK IS ENTIRELY AND COMPLETELY PRESENTED IN COMIC BOOK FORMAT. Ostensibly, the book primarily aims for novice &/or beginner bible readers. Like me, I learned a great loads about the stories infused here, such as acquainting to Abraham, Jesus Christ, Paul & the other Christ's disciples, etc. However, this book by all means, is suitable for all to read & enjoy. This work, turned out as well to be significant, valuable & a must have in everybody's bookshelf.

The compilation of abridged, yet incisive & more than substantial stories here, were deliberately presented in chronological orders. For instance, from the opening pages, you will encounter these stories in chronological orders. From creation, to Noah, to Isaac, to Jacob, etc. Thereby, the Old Testament can be found from the opening pages of the book, while the New Testament can be found in the latter 2nd-half(starting from page 545).

The book is primarily divided into two major parts-- the Old Testament & the New Testament sections. And the two major parts are further subdivided into sub-headings & CAN BE EXCELLED TO READ EACH ONE AS A STAND-ALONE TALES with little or no hitches at all. In fact, there is a table of contents that sited at the beginning pages of the book for your guidance & perusal. To illustrate my point, looking into the table of contents, & into the New Testaments section(likewise the Old Testament),the story of the New Testament begin with the sub-heading "Jesus birth & ministry", which runs from page 545 to 630. Then the next sub-heading, "Jesus final days", encompassing pages 633-671. So on & so forth.

Hence, for further exposition, in the New Testament section. The story commence from the birth, life, ministry, death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. Then, next, the sub-heading part about Christ's disciples burdening his teachings & ministrys. Then the last part(sub-heading) about the mission & contribution of Paul, a Christ disciple. Please do not get worried or confused, because all of these are actually vividly delineated prior at the beginning pages of the table of contents.

"Pictur Bible" has approximately 800 pages. All in full-color,in comic book format. The size of the book mimic-ed the "real" bible itself-- similar lenght, width & thickness. This hardcover version(my copy) is bound in a synthetic maroon color, leather.

The script written was concise, deliberate, vivid & easy to read and follow. The artworks as well, were life-like(as opposes to cartoony), sharp & detailed, & eye-pleasing. A terrific tome to add to your collections.

Although, first published in 1978, this book was no means passe'. On the contrary, as a whole, the book is very impressive as ever, especially pertaining to the art. The artwork look very fresh, very contemporary & extremely gorgeous. In no way, in anyhow, the book, especially the art, were not anything like degraded, blemished or substandard in its quality.

I keep on underlying & reiterating the artworks more than the writings, simply because if the book was somehow affected with obsoletion, the art shall be the first to surface above all others. None were anything that were neither old, passe', or decrepit. On the opposite, it looks really strong, fresh & most significant of all, contemporary as ever. The same thing can be said pertaining to the script. The author narratives, captions & dialogues were top-notch & precedently laid down.

If you like or will like this book, & incline to further read other "literary" books in comic book format, I have a few recommendations that myself extremely fond of. "Four Women " by Sam Kieth; "Maus" vol. 1 & 2 by Art Spiegelmann; "Samson: Judge of Israel" by Metron Press; & "King David" by Kyle Baker. All of them are available here at amazon.com.

A must own. A superior book to add to your collections.

Highest possible recommendation !

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I grew up with The Picture Bible, and it is absolutely outstanding. Even minor characters, like David's general Joab, are rendered identifiably in the pictures. The stories are presented in chronological order, not in the order they are contained in the Bible, which makes the history much more easy to understand and to follow. Since it's a book for kids, it does bowdlerize the stories a bit, mainly in the Old Testament, but not in a way that really undermines their significance. It makes the book come alive in a sense that is helpful both in a devotional sense and also in an historical or literary sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this Bible
I was given this book as a child and it made such an impact on me that I am rebuying it. I'm about to be 22 years.
This really helped lead me to God because it was so alive and fascinating to me. As a kid who grew up hating church, it was my Best Friend, and was what kept me from falling further away from God. I truly thank God for this Bible. ... Read more

Subtitled a "Story of Encouragement for All Ages," the Trellis and the Seed tells the story of how "God has planned something beautiful" for even the tiniest, most unassuming little seed.

The tiny seed begins its mysterious journey in the hands of the seemingly omnipotent "Nice Lady," who predicts--much to the seed's disbelief--that it will make a "beautiful vine with sweet-smelling blossoms." Even as the Nice Lady plants the seed, erects an ambitious trellis, waits for rain, adds fertilizer, and performs all her other nurserial oblations, the seed continues to be baffled by its caretaker's faith. ("It was only a seed, and very, very small. How could it ever be a beautiful vine with blossoms?") How indeed? Suffice it to say, God doesn't send a crafty bird to eat the seed in a harrowing third-act changeup.

Jan Karon's story of patience and faith shows the same folksy charm that infuses her Mitford Years series, and her gentle words find a soothing complement in the skilled, muted watercolors of Robert Gantt Steele (of the Her Story series). (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brief, But Warm Burst of Sunshine of A Book
As a fan of Karon's, this is first of this nature of her books for me. What a delight of a quick read, all of five minutes or so. But what a read!

Story of a seed, dry with no hope of becoming anything worthy. But through being set aside, doused in water, but into the deep, dark cold ground, drowned with water, covered with manure, and struggling to reach top of the trellis and finally to produce blossoms, supported by trellis and Nice Woman, it happens.

Knowing the author's faith and numerous Biblical references to plants and bearing blossoms (e.g. Psalm 1 and Mt. 13:18-52, and John 15:1-9), one cannot but sense that this is real parable's meaning here. Although many will derive pleasure from the read and wonderful illustrations, and still others will sense morals of patience, perseverance, support, etc., the strong spiritual implications here are obvious, what with the strong Biblical allusion and Karon's faith evidenced in the Mitford writings.

Blessings on this creativity and beauty communicated so wonderfully for all ages to be encouraged to blossom and bloom where and when the Lord wills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tickle or A Kiss?
A book of encouragement for all ages, enchantingly illustrated. God's perfect timing, mixed with grace and peace and the warmth of the earth and the water of the skies, can make us all be better than we ever imagined. A small volume, which I read in its entirety on my lunch hour, still delivers a powerful message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best All Around Collection in a Long Time
Ok, I confess. I've been listening to Adventures in Odyssey since its very first broadcast. I was in the target age range at the time, but I still love the show.

With the Novacom story behind them, the show serves up fun and funny shows focusing mostly on the kids and families around town.

"For the Fun of it" opens the album and finds Wooton playing host to his overly mature and well bred niece, with surprising results.

"Room Enough for Two" brings a surprise to Liz and her family when brother Mark shows up for a trip home from the Army with his fiancee.

"BTV: Behind the Scenes" finds disorder and disharmony on the set of the latest BTV episode, ironically enough about unity.

"Bassett Hounds" takes Wooton and Bernard to Alaska and a Bassett family reunion as Wooton's Grandpa plans to pass out his wealth.

"It's All About Me" features dual plots. In the first, Connie is upset when Mitch gets the credit for the advice she is feeding him on his new KYDS radio show. Meanwhile, Jared DeWhite is upset when his brother gets credit for his joke on Rodney Rathbone.

When Liz and her family disappear, it's up to Mandy, Jared, and a few new friends to solve "The Case of the Disappearing Hortons." (Have I mentioned it's wonderful to have Jared back in Odyssey?)

In "The Defining Moment," Marvin must deal with his sports abilities, or lack there of.

A free vacation sounds wonderful to the Washington family, until they get embroiled in the "Mystery at Tin Flat."

Aubrey takes a lesson in sharing her faith from Seth in "All Things to All People." But is this really the best method of evangelism?

Finally, the three part "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?" finds Mitch tracking down the person who stole Whit's identity and framed Mitch for it. Meanwhile, he finally has to make a decision about joining the FBI. What will he do and what will it mean for his relationship with Connie?

With some drama and comedy mixed in, there's something for everyone here. There were even a few episodes where they surprised me with the ending. Any fan of Odyssey will love this collection of great radio drama. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Savored Slowly
Ok, I repent. I have never read a Max Lucado book before. Just about everyone I know has, but I found excuse after excuse to avoid reading them. In do not know why. Maybe I figured that I had more important, or more entertaining reading to do. But the truth be told, I have never been a big fan of devotional books. But then I received this book as a birthday present from two dear friends in my church and what a blessing it has been.

Lucado is a master of the English language. You will not find more beautiful prose written anywhere. It is simply beautiful. Lucado takes a look at the life of Christ as if Christ is your neighbor next door. Thus, the book has a contemporary feeling. We are not reading about something that happened in ancient times, but we are learning how the living Christ is working in the world around us. Not only is this a well-written book, it is an insightful book as well. The author has a way of looking at well know verses in a fresh new way. And yes, he even gave me insight to Scripture that I had overlooked. Written in short chapters, it lends itself to being read devotionally- one chapter per day. You cannot rush Lacado. It is not a quick read. It is too insightful, to beautiful to speed-read. This is one good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesus, the guy next door
This book has brought the Gospels to life for me. Max Lucado puts a "down home" spin on familiar stories from the life of Jesus that reveal his closeness to humanity. Yes, he is our Savior. Yes, he never sinned. However, that does not mean that he is distant. That does not mean that he fails to understand our struggles, fears and pain.

Next Door Savior is a collection of 21 powerful essays that remind us that there is no person that Jesus won't touch (Part 1), and there is no place that Jesus won't go (Part 2) as our Savior. Lucado's stories will leave you laughing, crying and marvelling at the wonderful sacrifice Jesus has made for us.

Next Door Savior will help you grow from knowing *of* Jesus, to really knowing Him on a personal level, and being certain of His presence in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesus is not far away
Have you ever been lonely? Felt abandoned? Felt betrayed? Felt pain that you feel that only you have gone through? Been depressed? Need some reassurance? READ THIS BOOK. This is the the first book that I have read by Max Lucado, and it certainly will not be the last! Max writes in a way that I have never seen before in religious books- he describes biblical stories in modern day situations so that it is easier to understand the situation. His way of writing makes it easy for you to understand what is going on in the scriptures, and his writing comforts you. Jesus is not a god-man or half man and half God- he is fully man and fully God. Jesus has felt every feeling that you have felt- anxiety, mourning for the death of a loved one, happiness, sadness, depression, abandonment, betrayal... He understands everything that you go through. He is always there for you even though you may not think he is. He is near enough to touch! You can trust him! I highly recommend this book because it is so awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book I Can't Finish
I have been reading this book for a while, but I cannot finish it because I keep starting over from the beginning. Every chapter makes me feel great about God's love for us. It is my first Max Lucado book, but not my last. I recommend for everyone especially new Christians it brings Jesus to our neighborhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading
Having read several of Max's books I can tell you that he has done it again here. He has taken everyday things and turned them into a focus on the Love of Jesus and how we can use those gifts that we have all been given. Great reading with great insights. ... Read more

Jesus taught his followers through the use of parables; seemingly simple tales that reveal a deeper, more complex meaning. Christians the world over continue to tell and to ponder these timeless lessons. Now Mary Hoffman recounts eight of these important stories in accessible, beautiful language, perfect for sharing with a child. Every parable features an introduction and an afterword that convey Ms. Hoffman's insights into the parables and helps to make them understandable in the contemporary world.

These lovely, eternal stories are marvelously complemented by the soft, richly colored watercolors of Jackie Morris. This is a treasure for readers both young and old.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost ruined by intrusive commentary
"Parables: Stories Jesus Told" features text adapted by Mary Hoffman and art by Jackie Morris. This children's book presents several of the classic parables of Jesus of Nazareth. The retold stories include the parables of the good Samaritan, the sower, the prodigal son, the unforgiving servant, and more.

The stories are retold with effective simplicity. Morris' artwork is truly wonderful; her warm, rich tones bring to life the Middle East of Jesus' era. Her human faces are full of emotion, and she is also masterful at illustrating sheep, a wheatfield, flatbreads, and other elements.

The only bad thing about this book are the preachy, hit-you-over-the-head afterwords that follow each retold parable. These stories are some of the world's great literature, and should be allowed to speak for themselves; for a children's book, they only need the accompaniment of great artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars A painfully honest account of one man's conversion
This is not a novel and not really an autobiography, but rather a first-hand account of one man's journey from atheism to a belief in God (Christianity came much later and is not covered in this book--for that read his many religious works). I discovered this little gem while living and working as a graduate student in Scotland, at a time when I was neck-deep in the pit of atheism and feeling almost totally lost. I don't know why I was moved to take it off the shelf and buy it, but it was to be only the first of Lewis's books that I read. It's still my favorite because its theme is so close to me.

What makes Lewis's book so remarkable is its unashamed honesty and willingness to shed all masks in the face of reality, no matter how unpleasant or frightening that reality may seem. Lewis did not want to find God, and we feel with him that burning desire to run away once God has been discovered. The wonderful lightness and love that characterize many of Lewis's later works are not found here. Instead we see his defenses against God shattered one by one as he follows an intellectual path to belief. He tries his best to argue his way out of it, fighting every step of the way and using all the trivial excuses that human beings do, but we feel God's presence bearing down on him step by step like a great weight until he realizes that there is no escape. Lewis sees that it IS a burden at first if one has come to it honestly, because with it comes the realization that we are required to abandon ourselves and submit to God's will in order to find eternal peace. This is not an easy road for a human being to follow--indeed, it is the most difficult thing in the world for us to do, and Lewis knew that very well. We feel with him the pain and weight that came when he realized that there IS a God: the account of his final days as an atheist is absolutely excruciating for a reader who has had the same experience. One must actively and willingly choose to become what one is not by his very nature--what could be more difficult, particularly in this secular world?

Lewis's account of his spiritual journey shows that God can be discovered in the most unlikely places and in the most unlikely ways, no matter how hard we try to avoid Him. When we think we have trumped God, we find that He has in fact trumped us, always remaining well ahead of us on the path. Lewis's account often reads like a great chess match between one man and God, but it remains familiar because it is a match that we play again and again. As always, Lewis's honesty is disarming, his insight staggering, and his humor refreshing. I cannot recommend this book enough, but if you are looking for a biography of Lewis's life, this will not provide it. For that I recommend George Sayer's "Jack," but the best way to find out who Lewis was is to read his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece: One Man's Journey to God
C.S. Lewis has written a masterpiece on the subject of one man's conversion to Christianity. Not only that, it is a must-read for any fan of Lewis, for it sheds a great deal of light on his early life and biography. It follows Lewis from childhood to his conversion to Christianity as an adult professor, tracing the influences on his philisophical and religious thinking along the way. It is in my mind a modern Augustine's "Confessions". Lewis writes, as usual, with great candor and his usual lucid, easy to follow prose that takes complex issues and makes them understandable to everyone. This style has made him one of the finest Christian authors. His 'Mere Christianity' and 'Screwtape Letters' are other examples of his books that challenge a reader's religious philosophy. Of course, Lewis is more famous in most circles for his 'Narnia' books, which are also great, but it is his philisophical and deeply personal treatment of Christianity that makes him one of the greats.

Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to see how one man made his journey to belief and/or wants to learn more about C.S. Lewis, the man.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
A disappointment, though not without interest. Lewis's purpose is to tell the story of his conversion from atheism to Christianity. But there is little here to challenge or even interest the open-minded atheist. It seems to me that Lewis converted largely for emotional reasons, apparently because he believed in some kind of Hegelian Absolute. The last two chapters are so vague and poetic (or perhaps poetically motivated...?) as to be very tough to read when trying to find out why he believes and what relevance his conversion might have to me. I never really got clear answers to these questions. Lewis is always readable, but this was disappointing on intellectual grounds (which is true of all his apologetics).

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read
one of the best books by my fav author of all time. well worded, insightful, instructive, inspirational - how many more 'i' words do you need? please, take my word, and read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely and perennially absorbing book
This is a great book by a great writer, telling both of CS Lewis's life, including his education and his experiences as a front-line soldier in World War I, and his discovery of "Joy" and the sense of the scared, and his final conversion from Athiesm to Christiantiy. Full of wisdom, humor and fascinating historical description. His descriptions of his father, mother and brother, including his reaction to his mother's early death, are poignant and moving. He tells, also, of what it was really like to be a yong officer in the trenches of World War I, in which he was seriously wounded. In another key, how to really learn a difficult foreign language. This is a book to treasure and to read again and again. ... Read more

Book Description

"I refuse to speak further of the Ten-legged One...but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Why mess around with Catholicism when you can have your own customized religion? All you need is a disciple or two...and a god."

Fed up with his parents' boring old religion, agnostic-going-on-atheist Jason Bock invents a new god -- the town's water tower. He recruits an unlikely group of worshippers: his snail-farming best friend, Shin, cute-as-a-button (whatever that means) Magda Price, and the violent and unpredictable Henry Stagg. As their religion grows, it takes on a life of its own. While Jason struggles to keep the faith pure, Shin obsesses over writing their bible, and the explosive Henry schemes to make the new faith even more exciting -- and dangerous.

When the Chutengodians hold their first ceremony high atop the dome of the water tower, things quickly go from merely dangerous to terrifying and deadly. Jason soon realizes that inventing a religion is a lot easier than controlling it, but control it he must, before his creation destroys both his friends and himself.

Pete Hautman, author of Sweetblood and Mr. Was, has written a compelling novel about the power of religion on those who believe, and on those who don't. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read
This book will change the way you think. It's a good story, with characters I swear I know, and the main guy is too believable for words. He's funny, he's serious, he's smart, and he's not smart. Just like that guy that sits next to you in (fill in the blank). He's got questions about people telling him what to believe--he wants to figure it out for himself--and conquering his fear helps him do that. I never knew what would happen next. I've told all my friends to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Godless is Awesome
First, I loved the characters. It was great to hang out with them. Second, I loved what it was about. Godless shows you how a religion could come to be--how it could actually be created.

Pete Hautman always takes on big issues in his books: Sweetblood--vampires and diabetes, Mr. Was--abuse and time travel, Stone Cold--gambling. In this new book, he decides to take on a huge issue--what and how we believe God to be.

Godless is serious and funny at the same time, at the same moment. You can be laughing about what a character is saying and yet it can be painful and true. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Following Jesus" is a Joy!
After attending Dr. Stewart's training workshop during the Summer of 2001, I purchased several "Following Jesus" books. I integrated many of the Sacred Stories in the Children and Worship program at our Church. The stories were reasonably easy to teach and as each of us learned and internalized the story for presentation, we found that we were spiritually enriched. Not only are the stories beautifully written, they were well received by the children. The stories were true to the scriptural passages &the end result was that the children "got the message!" The "response time" validated that for us. Well done Dr. Stewart!

2-0 out of 5 stars Some great ideas, if you can edit.
I was very excited to hear that Sonja Stewart had published a follow-up to "Young Children and Worship." However, in actually looking through the book when I received it, I was disappointed to see that a certain amount of "Political Correctness" has been introduced, as well as some other elements that distract from the original Gospel accounts. Many of the stories have had a boy and girl added to the cast of characters. While I think I understand Ms. Stewart's intent (to draw young children into the stories in a "you are there" manner), I feel that it is actually a distraction. In some lessons there are more than twenty little wooden people to move around, which is difficult for the storyteller and confusing for the children. And some of the wondering questions, in particular, are hopelessly like something a school counselor leading a group discussion would come up with: (from the lesson entitled "Jesus' Trial") "I wonder why they want to kill Jesus just because they do not agree with him? I wonder how they could have settled their differences besides wanting to hurt or kill? I wonder what other ways Judas could have handled his guilt and sadness besides killing himself? I wonder how Judas could have been helped not to kill himself?" Perhaps I underestimate the wisdom of very young children, but I truly do not think they are yet ready to wrestle with the dynamics of first-century Jewish religious thought or the reasons why someone would end their own life.

Nevertheless, there are some excellent resources in this book, in particular the templates and instructions for making the materials. I just cannot imagine using this book "as is."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Follow-up!
This book contains stories from the New Testament that complements the original stories in Young Children in Worship. We converted our "children's church" to Godly Play about 4 years ago and these stories add a bit more spice to the original set. The previous book had a summer built in and these help to go through a year long program. Both of these books have been an invaluable resource. They give you every detail you need to complete and present each story. It has been such a blessing to our church and the spiritual growth of the children..

5-0 out of 5 stars More Wonderful Bible Stories to Share with Children
This is an excellent follow-through to Young Children and Worship. Sonja Stewart continues to build on what was in the original book, and also Godly Play by Jerome Berryman.

This book contains 34 stories from the New Testament about Jesus' life, and also about how some of his Disciples teach us to follow Him too.

Not only does it offer the "words" to use in the presentation of the Biblical stories, but it also provides patterns and instructions for anyone interested in sharing these wonderful stories with children (primarily 3 through 7 or 8 or so).

Note that these stories can also apply to children of God of all ages! The children (or older participants) learn in a multi-sensory way - not only by hearing or seeing, but by being able to participate in the stories and respond to them.

Within the past year, I assumed responsibility for the Childrens' Worship ministry at my Church, and these books have been an invaluable resource. We have also presented these stories in nursing homes with wonderful responses. ... Read more

Book Description

This bright and cheerful interactive explanation of the Mass will keep children occupied Sunday after Sunday. Little Sarah invites readers to join her and her family for a special Children's Mass. She explains everything in child-friendly terms, both the key parts of the Mass and the different roles of the laity. Many prayers and responses are given in full. Along the way Sarah asks questions that prompt the reader to point out people, actions, and items and that also gently encourage appropriate behaviors and thoughts. Searching the appealing art for the answers yields surprises as the typical congregation whispers, drops bulletins, and hunts for runaway babies. Above all, this book's message is that Mass is a loving place that has room for everyone.

Child's Guide to the Mass holds up to multiple readings week after week after week. The playful full-color illustrations show a diverse congregation that embraces the young and the old, the well and the disabled, plus a wide range of ethnic groups. The book's unique interactive features will entertain young readers as well as gently teach them and encourage them into a joyful attentive presence at Mass.

Written for kids aged five to eight, this title is recommended for parents, grandparents, home schoolers, and caretakers; Sunday school teachers, CCD teachers, and parochial school teachers; children's liturgy committees; parish offices; directors of religious education; Catholic daycare centers and Catholic hospitals; and gift givers everywhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A delight, but short on theology
This book explains the sequence of the Mass very well, and is quite engaging. The illustrations are interesting to kids - at least to mine!

I would have preferred a little more background on the why's of the Mass. The book focuses somewhat on who does what and when. I'd like to see just a sentence or two that goes into the theology. What does it *mean* when the priest offers up the bread and wine during the offertory? How is that different from the Consecraton?

It has been very valuable, and if used as a starting point for discussing the why's, then it can't be faulted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not what I thought
This is nice book for children to learn about the mass. It is geared toward older children though, a little old for my four year old. It gives the names for each part of mass, which is nice but the words are too big for small children. My daughter kept losing interest but each page asks a question that quickly caught her attention again. I actually thought this book would go more in depth about mass, listing the prayers and explaining church a little more, but it didn't. Overall is it a cute modern book for older children.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's He Doing, Mommy?
This book explains the mass in simple and clear terms, with an insight that would be helpful for casual Catholics too. My French grandson-age 4- was fascinated by the celebration of Mass during a recent visit. He insisted that his mom explain everything that the Priest said. I bought this book so that he and his little sister could remember our religious celebration. Both of the kids love this book and insist that my daugther read it to them most nights. ... Read more

Book Description

Not many months have passed since teenager Alexander Cold followed his bold grand-mother into the heart of the Amazon to uncover its legendary Beast. This time, reporter Kate Cold escorts her grandson and his closest friend, Nadia, along with the photographers from International Geographic, on a journey to another remote niche of the world. Entering a forbidden sovereignty tucked in the frosty peaks of the Himalayas, the team’s task is to locate its fabled Golden Dragon, a sacred statue and priceless oracle that can foretell the future of the kingdom.

In their scramble to reach the statue before it is destroyed by the greed of an outsider, Alexander and Nadia must use the transcendent power of their totemic animal spirits -- Jaguar and Eagle. With the aid of a sage Buddhist monk, his young royal disciple, and a fierce tribe of Yeti warriors, Alexander and Nadia fight to protect the holy rule of the Golden Dragon.

Isabel Allende once again leads readers on a fantastical voyage of suspense, magic, and awe-inspiring adventure in this riveting follow-up to City of the Beasts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Has a freaky attitude
Isabel Allende's "Kingdom of the Golden Dragon" seems like a cool book at first. It has a village of yetis, indomitable Buddhist monks, and a talking statue made out of gold. Though her writing drags, she has some good ideas.

But she really puts out some weird and disturbing ideas as well. Allende seems to have a problem with Americans in general. Her ideal 'Forbidden Kingdom' is a benevolent dictatorship, where the king gets to tell people how to dress, restricts what Western influences they get to see, and generally controls their lives according to his whims. The sheep like subjects all like that. And this is shown as a good thing. Call me a materialistic, soulless Westerner, as I'm sure Allende would, but I call that a lack of freedom and rights.

Who knows why Allende doesn't think much of Americans. But it's weird that she puts forward an ideal civilization that is far from ideal. And unfortunately, the Forbidden Kingdom wrecks the rest of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating
My mom and I both read this book and Allende's previous City of the Beasts. I read it in a few days which is very fast for me. I recommend this book for anyone who likes a great mystical adventure. I never found myself bored or not liking Allendes writing.

1-0 out of 5 stars This "Kingdom" doesn't rule
Someone stop Isabel Allende before she writes more fantasy. The reknowned author of "House of the Spirits" is out of her element in her second excruciating fantasy for teens, "Kingdom of the Golden Dragon." Tepid thrills, horrible love stories and constant preaching bog down a thin plot until it collapses.

In the Himalayas, Buddhist monk Tensing and his crown-prince sidekick encounter the legendary Yetis, and save the meager tribe from extinction. Elsewhere, Alexander Cold (who now insists on being called "Jaguar") accompanies his grandmother to the Kingdom of the Golden Dragon, a place that allows virtually no outside (read: American) influence inside. Nadia comes along with them.

But things take a nasty turn when Nadia and a bunch of other girls are kidnapped by the Sect of the Scorpion, a band of vicious warriors. Alexander goes after his friend, only to stumble into Tensing, who has rescued Nadia. Then they uncover a sinister plot to kidnap the king, and that the Sect is planning to make off with a magical statue that tells the future.

In "City of the Beasts," Allende couldn't stop preaching. In "Kingdom," she's gotten even worse. While talking about how wonderful the isolationist dictatorship Kingdom is, she condemns the materialism of (yes, again) the nasty nature-destroying Western civilization. And again, there are more hairy subhuman beastie tribes -- although the "army of Yetis" scene is more funny than thrilling.

Her preaching doesn't end there, either -- her slobbering monologues on the tenets of Buddhism get old fast, like listening to someone reading from a religious pamphlet. And with a complete lack of subtlety, she makes the villain a cartoonish megamogul, and the heroes a band of pure-hearted, nature-loving pacifists.

Does Allende's writing salvage the wilted plot? In a word... no. Her writing is tepid and lacking in detail, the pace is glacial, and the attraction between Nadia's pal and the prince turns into true love in about five pages. Perhaps the most annoying fact is that the characters are never really in danger. Whether it's invincible martial arts, healing with "the energy of the universe," telepathy or turning invisible, the heroes have a superpower for every occasion. I have yet to meet a Buddhist monk who could do half the things Tensing does.

Allende seems reluctant to spend any time actually developing the characters. Alexander and Nadia, being "pure of heart," are about as fun as dental surgery. Alexander in particular has shed any skepticism and quirks, and now believes everything he hears. In short, he has essentially become a male version of Nadia, who dazzles the idiot natives with her little tricks. And super-monk Tensing drops strings of cliches ("We are what we think. Our thoughts construct the world") before sauntering off to kick butt.

Isabel Allende's sophomore excursion into the world of young adult fantasy proves that "City of the Beasts" was not a solitary flop. With hideously bad characters, a dull plot and plenty of magical saves, "Kingdom of the Golden Dragon" is one for the reject pile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sequel to 'City of the Beasts'
Sixteen-year-old Alexander Cold, and his partner in adventure, Nadia Santos, are back, only this time their journey takes them someplace a lot colder, and much less wet. The two of them are traveling to the frosty peaks of the Himalayas. Using their acquired power from the totemic animal spirits, the Jaguar and the Eagle, the two of them are forced to not only locate, but to also fight to protect the kigdom's sacred treasure, the Golden Dragon, before it is too late, and it is destroyed by a greedy, power hungry individual, who is an outsider to the Himalayas, and a threat to everyone occupying the frosty peaks.

After reading CITY OF THE BEASTS, I had doubt in my mind that Allende would be able to caupture the essence of another adventure featuring Alexander and Nadia. However, I will admit, I was very wrong. KINGDOM OF THE GOLDEN DRAGON was an amazing book, filled with mystery, mayhem, and adventure, that will have readers clinging to their seats in anticipation of what is to come next, and unable to put this gripping novel down at all. Fans of Allende's previous book in the series, CITY OF THE BEASTS, will find that KINGDOM OF THE GOLDEN DRAGON is an enchanting thrill ride. I'm only sorry to see it end, and I hope to be able to read more about Alexander and Nadia's adventures in the future. Great work, Ms. Allende!

Trouble is brewing in Baker, Washington. Three popular athletes havebeen stricken with a mysterious ailment--or phenomenon--that leaves them rantingincoherently, paranoid, and eventually comatose. Ever ready to seek truth andjustice, teen twins Elisha and Elijah and their parents hop in their van, theHoly Roller, and head to Washington. As members of a top-secret presidentialinvestigative team, the Veritas Project, the family must be prepared togo undercover at any moment. Soon they are deeply embroiled in a deadly mysterythat involves witchcraft, bullying, the ghost of a boy who hanged himself longago, and a most diabolical weapon.

Frank Peretti, well known for his Christian thrillers (This Present Darkness/Piercing theDarkness, TheVisitation, etc.) draws from his own experiences of not fitting in as achild to create this alarming tale of vengeance. The twins and their parentsoccasionally turn to their faith for guidance, but the crux of the story lies inthe danger that comes from treating less cool kids like second-class citizens.References to the tragedy at Columbine remind readers just how painfully realthe problem is. Peretti seems to use the twins' father as a voice for his ownviewpoint: "Metal detectors may keep weapons out of the schools, and securityofficers can maintain at least a surface tranquility, but these will not keepout the pain, anger, and loneliness that cause a child to bring a weapon toschool in the first place." 5-0 out of 5 stars Frank lives up to his reputation
If you love Christian suspense, or even if you don't, you will after you read this. Twins Elijah and Elisha and their parents make up a highly secret investigative team. The family goes all over the country to find "not only the Facts, but the Truth behind the Facts." In a small Washington town, a highschool's star athletes are coming down with a mysterious illness that leaves them insane. The Springfield family is sent to investigate, finding a mysterious ghost, a second class system, and witchcraft surrounding them. They soon realizes that there is the Baker High that everyone chooses to see, and the second Baker High where people are harrassed, abused, bullied, stolen from, and made fun of every day. What measures will people go to to stop it? Enough to murder? I loved this eerie book! Not one section was boring, I was hooked to every page! The only problem is that I have to wait till the next book comes out...

5-0 out of 5 stars Hangman's Curse
The Hangman's Curse is Frank Peretti's first installment in a new series, The Veritas Project, aimed at young teens. The story unfolds just as if it is a story right out of today's headlines and deals with the issue of bullying on the high school campus. The Springfield family, consisting of twins Elisha and Elijah and their parents, make up the investigation team working on The Veritas Project. The program's mission is to investigate and solve strange mysteries, crimes, and occurrences, seeking not only the facts, but the truth behind the facts. In Hangman's Curse, the Springfield family's assignment is to discover the truth behind the mysterious form of madness that is inflicting Baker High School's athletes. What is causing this madness? Is it tied to the superstition of a curse left by the ghost of a student who has haunted the school since he hanged himself at the school in the 1930's? Who is the ghostly figure with a hawk on his shoulder that is seen by those tormented by the mysterious madness? Is he Abel Frye and is Abel Frye the student who hung himself? What is the meaning of the crude etching of a hangman figure on the lockers of each victim? It seems that it is the bullies that have been targeted and are the ones contracting the mysterious illness. Are they suffering a form of revenge from a group of students that is meeting secretly practicing witchcraft? What is the truth? The answers are uncovered as you follow the Springfield family's quest for the truth behind the mystery. The Hangman's Curse is a fast-paced and riveting page turner. The truth behind the mysterious madness will surprise the reader. Teens as well as adult fans of Peretti will enjoy this book. When finished, the reader will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and fun.
"Hangman's Curse" and "Nightmare Academy" are entertaining and easy reads. If you've been doing heavy research or reading this is a good switch. Light, and fun, I enjoyed it after a long study program I was in.. I read both books back to back so this review will be seen under both books.

I liked "The Visitation" better, but all three are worthy of your money..

Frank Peretti is an excellent writer. All of his books keep you in suspense. This book highlights the problems of teasing and making fun of those who are different, and is helpful if you are teased. Also, if you tease others maybe this book will help you see how much it hurts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Childrens Christian songs.
In preparing music for childrens programs, this book/cd collection is a great way to get started. The book contains the music for many traditional childrens songs. It has guitar chords and melody notation for all songs. For songs in a difficult key for beginng guitarists, it has alternative chord combinations to make playing easier. I purchased the CD version of the package so I can listen to a particular song without having to search for it on the tape.

One of the things that children really enjoy about this collection of songs is the hand motions/actions for many of the songs.

This was a great collection for an amature guitarist like myself to use to prepare childrens music for a variety of programs. ... Read more
