5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable friendship
"All Kinds of Friends, Even Green!" is written and photographed by Ellen B. Senisi. The text and photos tell a story about Moses, a disabled boy who gets around in his wheelchair. At school, his class is given an assignment to write about friends. Moses is inspired to write about a very special friend: Zaki, an iguana. Zaki is also disabled, having lost her back toes after a mite infection; Moses has a special affection with her.

This is a wonderful portrait of a multiethnic school environment that includes disabled youngsters. The acknowledgement section of the book thanks the participants at Zoller School in Schenectady, New York. After the main text there are three interesting supplemental articles: about disabilities, about young Moses, and about iguanas. The colorful, lively photos are enjoyable to look at. This book effectively reminds us that disability is an issue that affects both human and non-human beings. Moses and Zaki are likeable and admirable "characters," and the book movingly celebrates the special love a child has for a cherished pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I really liked this book, and so did my 6 year old son. I have a boy with special needs who is 5, and this author captured the curiousity and excitement of a small child so well, and then revealed the disability of the boy in the book in a very positive manner. My son had fun reading it, and I know that the ideas that were in the background are what I want my son to "get". I would definetely recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique, distinctive, and highly recommended
Written and photographed by Ellen B. Senisi, All Kinds of Friends, Even Green! is an adventurous picture book for beginning readers about a real-life pet iguana. Expertly taken color photographs of a boy and his beloved reptile companion, along with whimsical text, make All Kinds Of Friends, Even Green! unique, distinctive, and highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly charming and entertainingly upbeat picture book
Rose-Marie Provencher's Slithery Jake is an amusing picture book story brought to life with Abby Carter's watercolor illustrations. Sid is a young boy who brings home a snake as a pet. But then the snake escapes! Where in the world could that snake be? Slithery Jake is commended as a thoroughly charming and entertainingly upbeat picture book, featuring exaggerated action and comedy, and quite fun to read aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll want to take home Slithery Jake the pet snake!
As a parent, you'll want to read this book aloud to your child over and over again. The wacky rhymes roll off the tongue to a child's delight and the illustrations will keep your child giggling throughout the story. This book is so well written that I had to write a review!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slimy, Silly Fun!
My 7 year old daughter is in a "fun book" stage. First, she fell in love with Drum, Chavi, Drum! (she still has to read it every night) and now with Slithery Jake. If you want your child to laugh outloud, get her/him these two books. You won't regret it. These are by far the most fun books in her collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great counting book
In this book ten turtles are sitting on a log, but one by one, they each jump into the water when startled by other creatures of the forest, like bullfrogs, ducks, and deer. The story rhymes, and has a lot of alliteration. At the end of the book is a reference section with short informative descriptions of the animals mentioned in the text. This is great for parents who are faced with follow up questions after reading the book. The story, with its countdown plot, makes a great wind-down at bed time. It has about 60 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond
Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond is the story of a day in the life of ten Eastern Painted Turtles. The basic premise of the book is learning the numbers one thru ten. The book begins with "Ten timid turtles, lounging in a line. Startled by a bullfrog...Then there are nine." Various creatures continue to disturb the turtles. One by one their numbers dwindle. The story concludes with all ten turtles reunited for the night. The numbers one thru ten are then reviewed. Falwell includes 2 pages of ecological information at the end of the story. Information is included about all of the wildlife mentioned in the book.
The artwork in this book is striking. Each page contains a striking mixed media collage. The leaf prints and birch bark leave a realistic impression of life at the pond. The various animals depicted appear very lifelike. The Eastern Painted Turtles are especially well depicted. Several collages provide a clue to the next animal that the turtles will encounter. A rabbit is seen in the background on the page featuring the bullfrog. Part of the red squirrel's tale is seen on the page featuring the rabbit. A glimpse of the fawn's back is seen on the page featuring the red squirrel. The book also includes instructions on how to recreate Falwell's leaf prints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Language booster
My grandson loves this book! He likes to count the turtles, find the animals, and make all the animal sounds. He's even noticing the lively verbs and adjectives and has used them when he talks!
The artwork is very attractive and textural. A wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Count on this one!
This beautiful counting book is a great introduction to nature as well. The bright collage illustrations are rich with texture and detail, and the perky text is fun to read to kids while they find clues to the next animal hidden in the pictures. There are information pages in the back that provide more interesting facts about each animal ( helpful to parents,too--I didn't know that turtles wintered over in the mud at the bottom of the pond!) and even an arts and crafts page that shows an easy way for children to make leaf prints. ... Teddy bears and ducklings, eat your heart out--there's nothing cuterthan a red-eyed tree frog. And award-winning photographer Nic Bishop (The Secrets of Animal Flight) roamed through the rain forests of Central America with rolls and rolls of high-speed film to prove it. Preschoolers will be captivated by the slice-of-life story that Joy Cowley and Bishop tell of this adorable amphibian: "Here is an iguana. Frogs do not eat iguanas. Do iguanas eat frogs? The red-eyed tree frog does not wait to find out." Sharp close-up photographs of near misses with a snake, a long froggy leap, a moth lunch, and a little, eyelid-exposing nap mesh perfectly with Cowley's engaging narrative. The "Did You Know?" section in the back recounts the ins and outs, ups and downs of tree-frog life. (Ages 3 to 5) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Realistic Frog
You see the front cover. The rest of the book is like that: beautiful, vivrant images of the star, a lone red-eyed tree frog.

The "Red-Eyed Tree Frog" introduces us to a tint frig with wide eyes, and a few adventures he has. He contemplates eating an ant, swallows a moth, and narrowly escapes being munched by a snake.

The photographer should get the kudos here, as though there is text, it is the pictures which are the prize. The storyline is bland, unpoetic, but the photos are amazing. We see the frog flying in mid-air, and with his foot being tasted by the snake, and a moth pre- and mid-lunch. There is a cool shot of the frog with his eyes closed, as the frog sleeps, and the odd film covering its eyes.

It is a real look at a day in the life of one tree frog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both of my children love this book!
My 2 year old likes to yell, "Look out frog," "Jump," and "Crunch, crunch, crunch," at the appropriate pages. My four year old likes it, too. The pictures are nice and vibrant. This is one of their favorites.

3-0 out of 5 stars cool frogs
frogs are awesome amphibians i like reading and learning about them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eager Red-eyed Tree Frog reader
The cover photograph of an alert red-eyed tree frog immediately captures attention and invites one into the book. The close-up photographs are of great clarity and interest with one or two sentences of simple text for each one. Shown are some other animal life forms in the frog's habitat. These are introduced as are the frog's daily cycles, its prey, and its enemies. It shows how the frog eludes them. This book concludes with "Did You Know?" which is two pages with facts about its habitat, physiology and life cycle, which were not covered in the story. This section includes small photographs that illustrate its size, toe suckers, and how it sleeps blending into the environment with its unusual eyes closed. This truly delightful book gives a surprising amount of information. It would appeal to any age level, though its simple text is designed for a younger audience. It would also be an excellent addition for English Language Learners or other Special Needs people. This wonderful introduction of this endearing creature is sure to be loved by frog aficionados. I highly recommend this book.
