Book Description

This whimsical story takes kids back to a time when the world was still young. Its great swamp is filled with animals of every kind. One of them is a very odd looking fellow with a very odd problem: He doesn't know who he is. As he makes his way in the swamp, this odd looking creature discovers that he can hunt with a long, sticky tongue—just like a chameleon. But he also hops, and chameleons don't hop. He decides that he must not be a chameleon. Instead, he calls himself a Hoppameleon, but he still isn't sure who or what he really is. All the other swamp creatures are puzzled by him too. The only thing he does know is that he wants to find a friend who is just like he is. Kids will love this book's gentle humor and vividly colored illustrations that evoke nature's beauty on every page. And gradually, they will be able to figure out what kind of animal the Hoppameleon really is! ... Read more

But how will a tiny lizard be able to help Todd learn to ride a two-wheeler? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Impossible after All
It's hard to imagine a successful first-person novel, written from the viewpoint of a lizard. Yet, Ellen Kelley proves that it can be done and very, very well. Bima, the lucky lizard himself, is smart, believable, funny, whimsical, and yet touching in his devotion to Todd. Kelley walks a clever line, giving Bima certain human abilities (he learns to read from watching TV, for example) while keeping him delightfully lizard-ly. Bima can't talk to Todd, and yet the two understand each other and are fast friends. This book begs for a sequel. What will happen next? It's is a great choice for reluctant readers, especially boys though girls will love it too. Kids who love animals and kids who love to laugh will all love THE LUCKY LIZARD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leaping Lizards
Leaping Lizards! This is a fun story. It's not easy to write a tale with a lizard as the narrator, but Ms. Kelly pulls it off. Children will learn that seemingly insurmountable fears can be overcome. And it's a darn, cute story too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Readers!
Lucky is the reader who discovers this delightful book. Ellen Kelly's lizard-narrator, Bima, is fresh, funny, smart and, at times, smart-alecky; kind of like a big brother - - with scales! He truly cares about Todd, his human owner, and takes him under his wing . . . er, tail, as the two of them skitter through mishaps and adventures that will have you falling out of your chair laughing! (Wait till you read the lizard-taco scene!) The ending, when both Todd and Bima at long last overcome their fears, will satisfy readers, but also have them yearning for a sequel. A perfect book for any boy or girl who has mastered easy-to-reads, but is not quite ready for a middle grade novel. A wonderful read-aloud, as well. Recommend for ages 6-9. ... Read more

The Yucky Reptile book is great. The thing I like about this book are the illustrations and the reptiles. My favorite letter is R and the animal is the rattlesnake. The other cool thing about this book is that it tells outstanding facts about reptiles.

I've just read The Yucky Reptile Alphabet Book by: Jerry Pallotta, illustrated by: Ralph Masiello. It has amazing reptiles that I have never knew even existed. Reptiles are my favorite type of animals. I am in 5th grade and I really don't read alphabet books, but this reptile and alphabet book is extraordinary. I like this book. Ralph Masiello is a great illustrator. He draws incredible reptiles in The Yucky Reptile Alphabet Book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glenn@ Ashely River El.
I thought The Yucky Reptile Book was good because the pictures were creative and colorful. One animal I liked was the leatherback turtle. The turtle had dark colors and was extremely scary when I looked at it. I think Ralph Masiello's books are incredible. Other kids should read these books.
