2-0 out of 5 stars Just so-so...
The kids found the book to be interesting, and as far as it goes, useful as well. The exercises and commentary are all written to the children's abilities. My problem with this bookis that it is just too short and too simple.

Just as the kids are starting to feel like they aren't wasting their time; just as they are seeing some progress; and just as they are eager to turn the page and learn the next bit, the book ends, with the final page telling them that they are now on their own, and that the best way to learn guitar is to listen to their favorite music and try to follow along.

Well, if the authors had said that on the first page we could have saved a little money and simply bypassed this book altogether. I think it is a great disservice to kids eager to learn, to tell them [after they have spent their money and time buying and following a guitar book] that they shouldn't really be using books to learn guitar.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool
Easy intro to rock power chords and simple boogie-woogie baselines. The beginner should have a lot of fun with this.

Superb rock intro. Go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start here.
I spent about $80 on instructional videos and books to learn how to play guitar, this book is the only one that would recommend to others. Every other "beginners" book had me trying three finger cords and progressions from the start.
Frustration! This book has you playing riffs from modern rock songs string by string, one or two finger chords - you will actually playing music that sound cool, not Kindergarten sing-a-long crap. EVERY instructional for beginners should start this way. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix
I thought this book was very helpful in my everyday life. This book will enforce your mind to think of the capabilities of the guitar. Jimi Hendrix is great and deserves this book about him, that depicts his life story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix details his remarkable story
Though a little over a hundred pages of biographical detail is intended largely for advanced elementary grade levels, many an adult with a special interest in Jimi Hendrix's rock music will find themselves reading this biography of the musician's short but notable life. From a poor background in a home marked by an alcoholic mother, Hendrix rose to become a star. Jimi Hendrix details his remarkable story and profound influences on American popular music. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly better than Average
this Book is alright for a starter type of book but it doesn't fully grasp all the information one would want in such a Important Heading.when you see a Book that says the History of Rock&Roll you are expecting a Full overview&Insights left&right&this Book doesn't do that.but it's still a Interesting read nevertheless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average, not very detailed.
I checked this book out from the school library about 2 yearsago...This book is what the title says: The History of Rock and Roll. This book uses big text and a lot of photographs. It doesn't really gointo detail about the artists, but it does mention them and it showsthe evolution of rock and roll really well. One part of the book Ilike is the Suggested Listening section, showing music from the50s-90s. This book covers the beginning of rock and roll all the wayto the grunge era, a little after Cobain's death. If you are lookingfor a book that shows the evolution of rock, this is the book. If youare looking for detailed information on the artists of rock and rollthroughout history, this isn't it.

3 out of 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll Forever!
The prolific writer of junior biographies has done it again. Mr. Shirley's book reflects a strong knowledge of rock and roll history. For children growing up in these times, they will find an excellent resource that will educate them on the history of this incredible period of music exhuberance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll is Here to Stay.....
"Back in the 1950s, there was a musical earthquake called rock & roll that shook everything up." So begins Holly George-Warren's introduction to Shake, Rattle & Roll, and after detailing the origins of "the new sound", she goes on to profile fourteen artists who were instrumental in making it happen. From Bill Haley, Wanda Jackson and Fats Domino, to Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and James Brown, kids will be fascinated as they read about the lives and careers of the musicians who helped start the rock and roll craze. Each short biography is full of historical information, fun facts and trivia, and written in a hip, easy to read, conversational style. Award winning artist, Laura Levine's marvelously bold and bright, folk-art style illustrations, complement Ms George-Warren's text, and show each artist surrounded by words and pictures from his/her best known hits. Together they've authored an engaging and entertaining book that will peak the interest and whet the appetite of young music lovers, everywhere. Perfect for youngsters 9-12, Shake, Rattle & Roll is a joyous, fact filled treasure, and an introduction to rock and roll that shouldn't be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention Teachers!
Perfect book to parallel a unit of oral histories. Rock and roll-everyone has something to say about it. Students will get into the originality of the pictures. Parents and children can read together the well-written material about the hottest names in music history. It has everything to get students to the top of the new standards while connecting with their families and friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool book for kids and adults
A really fun book to read to kids--I learned a lot too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!
This is an extremely cool book, designed to introduce young readers to some of the founding artists of rock and roll.

Holly George-Warren is one of my favorite rock writers (and also previously fronted the punk/polka Das Furlines), so I know I'm in good hands with HER.

The illustrations by Laura Levine are brilliant and simple, in an "outsider art" style, depicting each artist (Chuck Berry, LIttle Richard, Wanda Jackson, Bill Haley) performing, and surrounded by symbols (and cymbals) of their careers, including famous song titles. The Jerry Lee Lewis picture has a piano keyboard as a frame.

Kids will love it, and adults will enjoy the subtleties of the art. I'm probably going to keep one for myself, and give another to my young godson on his upcoming birthday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool and Funky
This is a cool and funky book, well worth it to the parent of preschool rockers or aging rockers with kids. In fact, you don't need kids or to be a kid to love this book. If you know "poodle with a mohawk" and other Linda Barry hoozzaas, and you know who you are, then you will love this book. And you will look marrrveloouus reading it. ... Read more

This book is the number one book for someone who is trying to start a band!It has all of the necessary steps to get a group together! If you are trying to start a(rock)band this book is a must have!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
Lousy book, containing no information. If the author had actually discussed every item she lists in the table of contents and captions, it would be helpful, but she did not. This book is empty and useless. A better choice is "Start Your Own Band" by Marty Jourard. It is aimed at a slightly older age group, but it at least has some information in it (though it is a tad fluffy too). But it is miles above this one. ... Read more

The high-pased life of the rock star is outlined in here. The writer did a great job teaching me to rock on!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beatles for Beginners
Aimed at young readers, this is a decent overview of the lives and careers of the Beatles from their childhoods in Liverpool through the release of the first Beatles Anthology album. Thirty-eight black-and-white photographs of the Fab Four and other pop music stars are included, along with brief lists of recommended readings, films and videos, and other sources of information. The author generally does a good job of tracing the rise of Beatlemania within the context of the popular culture of the 1960s. Unfortunately, the book devotes many more pages to the Beatles as a cultural phenomenon than to their superb musicianship and their profound role in shaping rock music. ... Read more
