4-0 out of 5 stars not Richard Scarry's best
I'm a Richard Scarry fan, but this book isn't his best (I recommend "What Do People Do All Day?", "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go," and "Richard Scarry's Biggest Book Ever" instead). The pictures are, of course, great and full of detail, and most of the stories are amusing for young children, but I don't like the text -- it sounds dated and stiff, and in some cases is a bit too harsh (criminal characters who have to be "punished," etc.) If I read the stories to my son in my own words we enjoy the book more. (Well, he would probably enjoy it no matter what the words were!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Still have it
I received this book when I was about 5 years old and even after almost 14 years, I still have it. Granted, my copy of the book is now in very bad shape, but I still filp through the pages from time to time. It's story is still funny and appealing to me even through all these years, and helps me cool down when I'm stressed up with my assignments. Furthermore, It's the only book from my childhood days that is still with me. I would certainly recommend this book to parents who are looking for a good book of bedtime stories for their siblings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Scarry's Funniest Storybook Ever
This is the very first Richard Scary's book that I bought for my 2 1/2 year old daughter and she absolutely loves it. It is a daily "must read" book for her. She enjoys the antics of each character and delights in the illustrations. Now she picks the order of stories to be read. If she could have her way, she would make me read them all to her at one sitting!

This book teaches the good and the bad, the "should do" from the "should not" in a amusing way. Many of the stories are centered around a family life and this is highly commended.

Even I do not tire reading from this book everyday. It is a challenge to find new details in the illustrations to stretch her mind. I would definitely recommend this book and if my daughter has her way, she would too.

Both my daughter and I would certainly scout for more of Richard Scarry's books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS WAS A FUNNY FIRST READER AND YOU CAN'T HAVE TOO MANY OF
AMUSING FIRST READERS TO KEEP YOUR FIRST TIME READER AMUSED BY BOOKS. First, there are the great drawings by richard scarry...enough said...he's great. And the title is a pun on the word "pirates" oh by the way my son picked that up.....mom was a "duh" about that little pun. But it's a cute and funny book...and it's also about finding solutions which is really valuable since first readers are usually new to school and need to start learning how to find their own solutions for new situations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Kid's Story
I grew up with Richard Scarry and continue to love his lighthearted innocent style. This particular story is a lot of fun because of all the adventure and surprise in Mr. Mouse's quest to find his lady. Scarry's aproach to romance and marriage is almost amusing today, even children know that it doesn't work out quite like that, but it is a lot of fun to pretend.
Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
With great illustrations, my 3 years old son can read out the story even without knowing the words. The story is about a rabbit that was struck in the street with cement. The animals in busy town tried to find ways to get the rabbit out, including using big fan, dump truck, stick, and finally power shovel to scoop him up. It is amazing that just with the simple questions, like "Can we blow him out?" can arouse the interest of the little reader to read the book. This is one of favourite bedtime stories for my son. It is really a great book. I highly recommend this book for toddlers.

5-0 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, THIS BOOK IS FUN!
Like other richard scarry books this one has the usual FUN cast of characters....The pictures are charming and the words are not imtimidating. It would be easy to follow and predict the words because the pictures are so discriptive. This was a great early reader book.:) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for little readers
Another great Richard Scarry book. This is a collection of several stories all featuring Lowly Worm and his friends. My favorite story is the Talking bread. Little Flossie visits her dad at the bakery and loses her doll. She doesn't notice that it's missing until she bites into a fresh loaf of bread! My son likes Mr. Fixit and Absent-Minded Mr. Rabbit. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books ever
My three children, who are now grown with children of their own, loved this book. They delighted in pointing out things that they recognized and never tired of reading it. We still have books from when they were small, but this one fell apart from constant use. I've been looking for this book now for my grandchildren to enjoy. Richard Scarry books should never be out of publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great children's book!
I would recommend this book to anyone with small children. It encourages children to use their imagination. I had this book when I was a child, I still can picture some the stories and all of the characters. I am 28 now! I will be sure my children have a collection of Richard Scarry books...

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bedtime story book for 3 and up
This book is a nice departure from the sometimes frenetic, silly books for this age range. Great opportunity to let child select one story for bedtime read--the only problem is that all the stories may well be his/her favorite. We especially love the story of the 3 wishes. It gave us the first opportunity to act out a story and venture into drama. This is a sound buy or a very safe gift for a child 3 and up. Actually we began at 2-and-a-half and had no attention problems. Although rated for ages 4-8, I'd guess 7 & 8-year olds may be a bit bored with this book. Happy reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a true marvel for my kids
My kids and I really enjoyed reading this book together. My oldest daughter, Dee, received this book as a gift at age 2, back in 1987. The colorful pictures kept her attention and having the names of the pictures was a great asset for association.

My son, Willy, was born in 1988 and Dee would get her Richard Scarry book out and read to him. The bright pictures also kept Willy attention. As Willy got older, the two of them would play the FIND game using Mr. Scarry's book. Dee would ask Willy to find a bus, pencil, etc. They would also use this book to learn to spell the names of the pictures. Mr Scarry's book became one of our best learning tools.

Eileen, my youngest, also enjoyed this book in her early years and still to this day takes the book on road trips with her to play the find game with the older siblings. Our book is well used and has been scotch taped several times, but the kids enjoy this book and have for the past 11 yrs. I truly recommend this book for any family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss it!
I owned many Richard Scarry books as a ltitle girl, so I was thrilled when we received several as a gift for my daughter. I introduced this book to her at about 12 months of age, and much to my surprise she immediately became obsessed with the book, the alphabet page in particular. I was so surpised by this, as she normally only has the attention span for interactive/lift-the-flap books, but her attention span regarding this book is a testament to how fabulous it is! In the last 2 months, she has come to like all of the pages, and it is a book she brings me everyday to read to her, turning around and plopping herself down in my lap for a good long read! I myself remember the cozy illustrations, especially the pages of little things and food. The book is loaded with words, opportunities for elaborating and describing in great detail, and in my opinion I think the title suits it well: it is the best word book ever! Don't miss out on this book, especially if you are looking for something to hold your child's attention for longer than 5 minutes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps your child learn to read.
My son, who is now 40 years old, had this book when he was about 2 years old. I used to read some of it every day to him, and we would laugh and talk about all of the pictures, and the words under each item. Soon, he could look at all the pages and "read" the words. I truly believe this book was the inspiration for his lifelong love of reading. Now, I buy this book for the grandchildren!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Childhood Book
I remember this book as a favorite during childhood...over 30 years ago. Is the best for starting a infant on learning vocabulary. The pictures are wonderful and will grab any child's imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't have this book- buy it now!!!
I just can't recommend this book highly enough. It has page after page of interesting scenes, animals, objects, vehicles and more to look at and talk about with your child.
There are many opportunities for teaching words. I name objects for my daughter and she also points to objects that I name for her. She has learned many new words from this book.
It is truly a must have for parents!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is this out of print????
... This was one of my favorite books as a child. The stories about the animal characters from different countries were very funny and I loved to read them over and over. I had the flags on the back cover memorized as to which country they belonged to. This book is a great way to introduce kids to geography AND get them to love reading. The copy we had as children belongs to my sister so I would really like to buy my own!....

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book as a child--Please reprint!
Like everyone here, I was surprised and dismayed to find out that BUSY BUSY WORLD is no longer in print. Our family travelled all over the world, and living everyone from England to Iran to Australia, I wasn't unhappy, because Richard Scarry suggested the world was a charming, interesting place full of, well, busy people (Richard Scarry liked to do books about getting things done--I can also recommend WHAT DO PEOPLE DO ALL DAY?), and so it was. I bought a copy for a friend's child sometime in the mid-1990s, and had I known it was going to go out of print after that date I would have bought a second copy for myself. I will certainly buy one if it is reprinted.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World would be better if all children read this book
Housepainting pigs, Couscous the detective, Matilda? the kangaroo nurse, the pig that kisses the blarney stone and the brazilian boa that wrapped herself around a jet plane. I still sketch the bloated plane in quiet moments at work.
Modern chidren's books seem lesser immitations. To be fair I have not read the newer books, but the illustrations are never in the same class as Scarry's and no book has such a wealth of stories and characters.
Save the world, bring it back!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring back Busy Busy World!!
Now that my own copy from childhood has come apart at the spine, and both covers need to be reattached, I wish this book were available for sale at a retail-like price.
This was my favorite book as a child, and it has become one of my children's favorites. We read it almost every night these days. If my parents hadn't saved it, it would have been lost to them. These are great stories, with wonderful funny illustrations (you have not lived until you've read Good Luck in Rome, complete with pasta-flying, gelato-spilling traffic chaos sound effects, to small children) and the book actually encourages an interest in other countries and cultures.
What can we who love this treasure of children's literature do to get a campaign going to get this back on the shelves?

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm devastated.
Of all the Richard Scarry books we grew up with, why would this one be out of print? My son and I have been relying on my family's old, taped-up copy, but several pages are missing. (The story about Sergeant Yukon of Canada ends with Smudge the chimney sweep rescuing Frau Wascherwommen's little boy Hans...) Still, it's our very favorite book, and for my son, it's an obsession. My sister-in-law was very impressed when my not-quite-2-year-old said "Israel" and pointed to the right place on the world map! I want to get complete copies for my son and my nephew, but I can't afford the collector's prices. I hope an enlightened publisher brings this book back into print someday! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is there a doctor in the house?
This book is absolutely darling. With a four year old fascinated by gadgets -- particularly those that let her be a doctor -- this book has allowed our "doctor" to all but open up her own private practice. Between magically transforming hairbands into stethoscopes, spoons into reflex hammers, and chopsticks into tongue depressors, Emily has turned our house into one giant hospital. In addition, trips to the "real" doctor are all but begged for. There is only good in this book, and it has provided entertainment for our whole family -- including our newest four month old addition who is a most willing patient. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Boys' Favorite
Wonderful book contrasting the behaviors of two "boys". The parents even have rules which are actually enforced! Imagine that, a book that in today's world shows parents with a backbone and who love their kids enough to say "no"!! All this with Richard Scarry's wonderful illustrations. We bought extra copies to give to friends with young ones. Our boys love it as we read it to them. A wonderful way to reinforce the long-forgotten idea of "responsibility" in our children.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very negative book
I was considering buying this book because my son loves Richard Scarry and I thought it might be a cute way to reinforce manners. Fortunately, I found a copy of the book at his play group and was able to read it first. Pig Wont is shown bare-bottomed getting a spanking from his father for not listening, is called a "Bad Pig!" for not following directions, and is treated in a very unsympathetic way. This kind of stern, un-understanding way of disciplining a child is unappealing to me and (I believe) unhelpful for the child. The book came across as very negative to me; instead of focusing on why a child would WANT to behave, it focuses on the bad things that will happen to him if he doesn't. That's not the message I want to send to my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and creative to be read over and over and over...
This is one of the most creative ways to address the stubborness in children and all of us. The adorable Pig Will and Pig Won't relates how having everything OUR way is not always the BEST way! Perfect object lesson for little minds! And entertaining for parents who need an innovative way to communicate the importance of obedience to youngsters!! ... Read more
