4-0 out of 5 stars Elephants, Hello, Please, Thank You:18 month old's favorite
I think my 18 month old started out loving this book so much because it has elephants in it. We love to make the elephant sign and the noise "bfffuuuuttt".

Some times I change the words I read. For example, instead of reading "he never pushes or shoves", I say out-loud "the elephant waits by standing still" to eliminate some of the gender and the sometimes "dont dont dont" wordings. Partly because at 18 months old "never push or shove" sounds a lot like "push and shove". :) Older children will probably be able to understand words like dont and never.

But my 18 month old doesn't care about those things. And we love signing "hello friends", "please", and "thank you".

I agree that it is never too early to teach social manners!

Just dont feel like you have to read it word for word; change a couple here and there!

We also love spying the bears, rabits, mice, fox, lady bugs and hats!

5-0 out of 5 stars A big hit in our household !
Our 18-month-old can not hear this being read enough. We must read it 5 times a day or more, maybe much more, with him asking/signing 'more' again. The illustrations, as can be expected, are excellent. Best of all, from a parents point of view, is that it teaches the importance of manners.

Given the lack of manners that I often see on playgrounds (by parents!) I think that it is imperative that good manners be drilled (there is the 'd' word) into children when quite young. Good social graces are usually a surer factor of success in life than extra points on an IQ test. There is a plethora of books out about raising bright kids, but markedly fewer about raising polite kids.

I picked this title up in a supermarket on a whim, and found it a favorite with our little guy, who already likes to say "please and "thank you" as well as "How do you do?". Buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute and fun to read, and also teaches good manners
Cute Richard Scarry pictures are always fun for children, and this book combines the fun of Scarry's cartoon animals and vehicles with many tips on good manners in several different situations. Needed by many of today's children. ... Read more

Sergeant Murphy, Huckle, Lowly, Mr. Fixit, and the rest of the Busytown citizens are busy indeed in this big treasury from beloved storyteller, Richard Scarry . Sixteen stories are collected from the classic Richard Scarry's Funniest Storybook Ever and Richard Scarry's What Do People Do All Day?, including "The Talking Bread," "Building a New Road," "The Unlucky Day," "A Visit to the Hospital," and "Sergeant Murphy and the Banana Thief." A whole new generation will giggle at the slapstick antics and gentle misfortunes of Scarry's colorfully drawn animal characters as they go about their everyday lives building houses, mailing birthday letters, and going fishing. In addition to the warm, funny stories, Richard Scarry's books are terrific language builders. Children pore over every page, lingering to find the droll little details they may not have caught their first--or fifty-first--time around. (Ages 2 to 6) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

Having just adopted a beautifull baby boy I wanted more than anything to be able to share this book with him.

Mr. Paint Pig is packed full of laughter and learning... this book keeps a childs attention with lively characters, wonderfull illustrations, and a very cute story line... and all of this while teaching your youngster colors...

I hope that all of you enjoy this book as much as my son and myself have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple concept, charming execution
"Richard Scarry's Lowly Worm Book" is a Random House Chunky Book. It features a series of pictures with one-word labels on the items depicted: chimney, roof, house, tree, leaf, etc. The emphasis in general is on common household objects; this book could be a good educational tool for beginning readers. The book's title character is seen at least once on every colorful two-page spread. With his innocent smile, green hat, and single red sneaker, the Worm is a charming, likeable character with lots of visual appeal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for toddlers!
Chunky books are great for little hands, and all children love Richard Scarry books. I first heard about them when my cousins were little, and started buying them when our first child was born. She liked them, as did our second, third, and fourth child. Our youngest is 15 months old, and Richard Scarry's Lowly Worm Book is one of his favorites. He loves to turn the pages, look at the pictures, and ask "What that?". Each page has a simple picture, making it easy to give a one-word answer. Each picture has captions on each element, so that as the child gets older you are prompted to give more detailed answers to the "What that?" question. Buy the Richard Scarry chunky books for your toddler, and keep on buying Richard Scarry books and videos as he/she grows. They are always fun to look at for both children and adults! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 of the Best Richard Scarry Books: All in One!
This book combines "Busy, Busy Town", "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go", and the "Best Word Book Ever": 3 of Richard's Scarry's most endearing stories. All told, the book has 182 pages of classic Richard Scarry charming and adorable illustrations, and covers everything from occupations, to vehicles of every type, to parts of the body and things in the kitchen. My 2-year-old son loves to page through the book, and its large size means that we see "new" pages each time we look at it. Absolutely wonderful - worth every dime.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Winner in Our House!
Our nearly three-year old daughter simply loves this book. She first got Richard Scarry's "Biggest Word Book Ever" (which I ABSOLUTELY recommend!), and therefore already knew the characters. She cracks up at the clumsy Mr. Frumble, who is always having accidents, and she is attracted to the kindness and friendship between Lowly Worm and Huckle Cat. She recognizes emotions and personality traits in this book...Mommy Cat is angry, Huckle Cat is sad, poor Mr. Frumble is "accident prone". These emotions are displayed in an age appropriate way. This book is a compilation of 3 short stories, and is one of the first "big girl" books she consistently wants to read, morning and night. Definitely the best few bucks I ever spent!

- The content is comprehensive (better than most of the workbooks I have seen.) There are great exercises of logic, letters, numbers, words, math, thinking skills ... etc.

- Can be used as a workbook first and a coloring book later.5-0 out of 5 stars Truly the best workbook ever!
