The Worst Helper Ever
This book is about a farmer that has to go to work but he needs some help with it so he goes into town and asks Charlie Cat to come and help him do some work and he agrees to help him by first asking if he can drive the truck back to the house. On the way he almost hits two people and drives the truck right into the river. The lesson this book teaches is not to get mad if one of your friends tries to help you and accidently do something wrong. I would think that this book would be good for ages 4-6. I thought that this book taught a very good lesson about trying to help someone if they ask.

The Worst Helper Ever
"The Worst Helper Ever" is a very good book I thought. Farmer Pig has a lot of work to do so he decides to go into town to get some help. He runs into Charlie Cat and asks him to give him some help on the farm. The only problem is that Charlie Cat is very clumsy. He tries very hard to help him but every time he messes up Farmer Pig gets angry with him. It is very comical for a young reader especially since the illustrations are so good. At the beginning of the story when Farmer Pig first goes into town to get some help you realize what kind of person he is and also how different he is form Charlie Cat. On the way back home from town Charlie Cat offers to drive the truck so that shows that Charlie Cat is a good person to have help you. But on the way home as they're going over the bridge they fall in... that is how most of comical story goes. But at the end of the story Farmer Pig messes up but Charlie cat doesn't get mad at him like Farmer Pig did to him. Charlie cat tells him that everyone makes mistakes and that's true. I think it was a good moral to the story for younger readers and I think that they would learn a lot form this story. ... Read more

Decent supplementary workbook
This workbook has some good creative lessons. An example I haven't seen in other workbooks would be a page devoted to "left" and "right" - something many youngsters learn and forget. It's nice to see it practiced. If your preschooler enjoys workbooks (and many too, but hey, let them be a kid and don't force this on them!)

I only give it three stars since the pages are VERY thin and any child using a marker will have bleed thru to the other side. Some preschoolers dont write with enough pressure to use a crayon or pencil (something about holding the pencil just so). Anyway, a minor point, but irritating when you are actually using it.

Also, all the pages are in black and white, and not perforated. Try a Jumpstart workbook first and go to this if your preschooler runs thru it quickly.

Good workbook for a 3 year old
On my point of view this is a very good book for very young children, because it has them working on those basic skills that are so important (big/little and other opposites, telling a story describing its picture, tracing, drawing lines...). The only 'bad' point is that it only covers numbers up to 5 and it only covers a few letters from the alphabet.I would recommend it as the first one of your little child's workbooks.

Richard Scarry's Getting Ready for School Workbook
My child and I give this book 4 "PURPLE" crayons up (4 stars). The book includes exercises in the basic "3 R's"plus puzzles and coloring pages,which are very handy in preparing children for school. Lowly and Huckle help take the preschoolers smoothly through each lesson. My 3yr. old recognized the characters from TV. We both like the book's lesson format, which was different from your general activity books you find in stores. (Usually my preschooler will finish the 30 page books in one sitting.) This book has 128 pages. I only wish there was a note at the bottom of the pages explaining what skills are covered by each lesson. Oh, and perforated pages to make it easier to tear out the assignments. ... Read more

Great for the youngest book "reader"
Our daughter is just two, and fascinated by everything
Lowly Worm does. This book is the strongest incentive
we've had for months--she absolutely loves it.

I've seen the other reviews--apparently the writers
are judging it by a standard for children who understand
plot, character development, and linear storytelling.
My 2-year old does not.

good for kids -- bad for parents
Perhaps children love the book-- certainly our 2-3 years old daughter does-- but this book can be tiresome for parents.
Lowly worm, who lives with cats, wakes up on a windy day and embarks on two or four page adventures. The time scale is nonspecific; perhaps this narrative is an introduction to the jump cut. At least one section of the book, on conservation of resources, is out of date; the children are encouraged to eat everything on their plates to avoid wasting food.
Perhaps children who are beginning to read to themselves would find this book fascinating, but it is difficult to read out loud unless the reader expands substantially on the written text. ... Read more

The Best Book Ever!
This was my all time favorite book growing up. I absolutelty loved all the activities and craft projects that were included in the book. If you have a creative kid, buy this book. Even though it was published in 1977, kids today will still love it.

One score and seven years ago...
This book from 1973 is still a classic for little ones learning about letters and words. This book was a favorite of mine when I was learning, and I was so glad to find out that it is still available. My two-year-old daughter loves Richard Scarry books, and will no doubt greatly enjoy this one. In this book, Dudley the Pig detective and his cat partner look for letters of the alphabet. Each page is for a different letter, in alphabetical order; on each page, there are multiple words containing the designated letter. All of the designated letters are red, except for one. The child must find the one letter written in black. As with all Scarry's books, the pictures are great and engaging, and the characters are lovable. Family favorite
I must admit that I loved this book as a child for one reason only: the pickles. They are randomly dispersed throughout the illustrations, and it becomes a delightful "Where's Waldo?"-esque kind of game to find all the pickles. my son's favorite!
This book is full of vehicles, real and imaginary, my son loves anything that goes! Mr. Frumble's many accidents always makes us both laugh. The action always makes him excited too. I'm not a good writer, all I can say is my son's first exclamation was from this book "oh dear". I've read it so many times now that he and I both have memorized it!
