Art Projects Plus!
This is a great resource for classroom teachers and art teachers alike. Lessons cover many disciplines - drawing, painting, paper design, collage, prints, and many miscellaneous such as stained glass, masks, portraits, and fabric art. Lessons all stem from a picture book or illustrator. Lessons were designed elementary students but I have adapted them for middle and high school students as well. Great book - Sage advice for starting school!
The book is a great collection of "Cool rules" to follow to make life easier at school. Written for the new student it gives advice on how to avoid trouble in your new surroundings. Opinionated? - Absolutely.

A good portrayal of the man who taught Ganas
I had heard that Stand and Deliver was a good movie and so I borrowed it from my public library. I wanted to know the truth about Jaime Escalante, the truth behind the movie. I happened to see this book one day and just started reading it. It took me less than an hour to read, but the well-written book taught me much about Escalante, the sensational and resourceful teacher. This is not only the Stand and Deliver story-- the story about how he made 18 high school students pass the A.P. Calculus exam, but the things that led to it and the aftermath.

This book is a short read, but it is inspiring and especially good if you want to know the story behind Stand and Deliver, the movie about Jaime Escalante as a teacher.

Entertaining and Inspirational
This lively and engaging biography makes good use of quotations and information gained through personal interviews with Escalante. Reading this book makes me feel that I have spent time in Escalante's company. I would not want teachers to mimic his style, but I would like them all to share his determination to succeed. ... I think High School Survival is one of the most useful and interesting books that a teenager can read.There are so many good helpful hints--I am a teenager, and I found myself relating to all the scenarios described, andreally enjoying any advice they offered.Overall, I'd say High SchoolSurvival is a great gift for a friend or yourself, and I would definitelyreccommend it.It is informative without being preachy, and there arestudent authors from all over the country, so there is probably someone whohails from wherever you live!It reads like a "Chicken Soup"book, but it is something that is helpful with solving different problemsas you are confronted with different issues, so if you have read it once,tht's not enough! The Basics
When children are just beginning to read, they often have a sort of confused look on their face until all of a sudden they get this wonderfully big smile and realize they have broken the reading code. This happened to my niece when I was first teaching her to read. One minute she only knew her alphabet, the next, she was reading three letter words.

These flash cards can be used at home in conjunction with a reading program at school. What you could do is start with the alphabet and use the cards with a green border to associate the alphabet with the sound in a word. Like....y in yellow or h in hen. Your child can get ahead at school if you are willing to spend some time teaching them at home when you can.

This set includes a step-by-step guide. First they show you how to help your child hear simple sounds like b in banana. Then they can start sounding out words like c-a-t.

This also covers short and long vowel sounds. To compliment this mini-program, you will want to pick up a Manuscript Formation Guide and possibly look into a book like: Leonard C. Duncan's How to Teach Phonics. It is nothing fancy, but has lots of extra words and you can make up some of your own 4 x 6 cards. Your child might also get involved in decorating them and you can make it into a fun coloring project.

Kalli Dakos writes child friendly poetry...
If you are an elementary school teacher or a lover of children, do whatever you must to obtain some of the remarkable poetry by Kalli Dakos. Miss Cole on an Onion Roll is a collection of some of the funniest and inventive school-based poetry I have ever read. In my third grade classroom I presented a number of the poems from this book and the children squealed with delight as a read the clever rhymes and they could not wait to pick up the book to read during independent reading time. Now, my children beg me to take Miss Cole... of the shelf to read again and again! As parents and educators, we only have a brief wiindow of time to introduce our children to poetry and to provide them with the rich literary experiences that poetry can provide.
