Anyways, Kristy and Abby are on the debate team and are traveling to Washington D.C. for a competition. They are both signed up in the beginner level and Kristy gets assigned to a team with someone name Kai and David. Kristy tells David that he looks exactly like Terry Hoyt, and he acts all nervous... Then David disappears...........
When Kristy and her friends went down to Washington, D.C., on a school trip, they expected to see some famous sites. But they never imagined they would be caught up in a big and dangerous mystery involving secret identities, dark revenge, and a suprise kidnapping attempt. Kristy is one of the only witnesses who could put the kidnapper behind bars. Can she stop him in time? Read this book and find out!
I enjoyed this book although I like the more down to earth Friends Forever storylines better. This one was a bit much, but I did enjoy the change of pace...none of the other Friends Forever teens were in the story. Their names are only mentioned once or twice, and that was refreshing and different. Overall this book was all right, but it isn't as great as the previous books in the series. ... Read more

Sorry for the babbling about only Will, Liss, and Ken. There were more characters, Andy tells Conner he's gay and is laughed at. I don't think Tee was in it much but she should get over Conner like he's in luv w/HER. I always end up the topic away and babble. ;)
Next up, Jeremy Aames wants to quit at House of Java for obvious reasons--both his exes work there. But Jessica Wakefield is trying to get Jade Wu fired instead. Finally! Andy Marsden reemerges from the shadows and outs himself to Conner McDermott, but without the reaction he thought he'd get. And Conner...well, nothing much has changed there. He's still stumbling around drunk, as usual. This was a good SVHSY book, but it certainly wasn't exceptional. Nothing really new or dramatic happened, and the ending wasn't a big surprise either, considering the book title and foreshadowing on page 92. Still, worth a "5" for the writing.

Book Description After four years of hoping, wishing, scheming, and waiting, the moment Alice has been yearning for has at long last arrived....Alice's dad is finally marrying Sylvia Summers! Alice always knew they were perfect for each other when she set them up back in seventh grade, but she's relieved that The Big Day is here. She's never felt so excited, so vindicated, so grown-up, and so...well, so left out. Now that the wedding is really happening, no one has time for Alice anymore, and the situation just gets worse when Sylvia moves into their house. Nothing is the way Alice thought it would be. Her dad and Sylvia have their new life together; Lester has his new apartment; and Alice feels like she's on her own for the first time in her life. She's also starting to notice that even though Dad and Sylvia are perfectly happy together, not everyone gets along so well. Elizabeth and Ross never see each other; Leslie and Lori are breaking up; Pamela and her mother can't seem to find a way to even talk to each other; and Alice herself has started to hear some surprising rumors about Patrick.... As Alice watches her friends sort out their problems and sees her dad and Sylvia navigate their new marriage, she starts to understand all the hard work that goes into relationships and how even when people seem to be meant for each other, it's not always easy to be together. Reviews (6)
But how can Lester's moving out be anything positive? He wants his own apartment and has no reason not to leave home - Alice's begging for him to stay evidently won't suffice here - he's a grown man and it's time for him to stop mooching off Mr. McKinely. Alice can't imagine home without Lester in it. And as I've read the series, growing fonder and fonder with each book, I've gotten to know and love Lester's endearing quirks. His non-morning personality. His ways of teasing his baby sister. His "Ye gads!!!" Alice can imagine the beautiful Sylvia Summers as her mama, despite the fact that she might not call her such. After all, she has been motherless since the age of 5. But Sylvia's arrival in the McKinely household is proving harder than it once seemed. Alice is no longer the only woman in the house - now Mr. McKinely pays more attention to his new bride than his own daughter. Having Sylvia in the house makes Alice feel the urge to be super-careful about petty things. It also makes her often feel oh-so awkward. Could Sylvia's moving in be a mistake? On a different note, will things between Patrick and Alice heat up again, being he's through with Penny? They were acting awfully cozy at the wedding reception. Or will they remain mere friends? Either way, it's been clarified that Alice is no longer hurting over Patrick's dumping her. Or is she? Could it be why she's acting so cruelly to Penny, as revenge for the rather bitter breakup? She's the only lunch table member who didn't get a wedding invite, that's for sure. Naylor's umpteenth venture into Alice's realistic world of friends, family, and hardships will have you drawn in till the end, just like all the other books in the series, though it has quite a bit less luster. Still, putting that aside, it is rather enjoyable. Perhaps if I didn't have the previous series efforts to compare it to, it wouldn't seem as bland. Am I getting too old for Alice? Absolutely.
Including Alice continues the story of Alice McKinley. Now she is preparing for the wedding of her father to Sylvia Summers. The book follows her through the wedding, and the adjustments she has to make afterwards - like living in a female-dominated household after so many years of living with her dad and Lester. The other storylines in the book piece it together and make for added entertainment and laughs. But I don't want to give anything away, so I'll leave it at that. In my eyes, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is one of the best writers of young adult fiction, and I will continue to read the Alice series until their end. At that point I will just pass them on to the next generation of young girls in my family, and then the next... and the next... You get the picture. Now just read the books already. :)
The "wedding chapters" were so much fun to read, especially while listening to the free CD of classical wedding music that's included with the book. Obviously, there are a lot of changes for 15-year-old Alice, including getting used to having a stepmom, Lester living in an apartment of his own, and new developments in her relationships with friends. I really enjoyed this book, because it included many familiar characters, realistic and humorous situations, and was very easy to relate to. Alice is definitely growing up, and Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is the best at making this series work! ... Read more

In this 15th installment of the Bailey School Kids series, the gang is gearing up for a soccer tournament against their ol' school rivals. Like other sports they play, the Bailey kids just aren't doing well at all. That is, until Coach Graves shows up and puts 'em through the motions!! Coach Graves has that combination of motivation, organization and sheer power that all fine teams have. Though she drills them through some tough practices, has them exercise until the gang thinks their legs will fall off and the whole team shows up for practice reeking of muscle-relaxant cream, with her as the coach, the Bailey team might have a fighting chance!! That is, until one day when a mysterious old woman comes to practice, gets into a heated argument with Coach, and suddenly the Coach Graves, who has always been in constant motion, just sits on the bench staring out into space. Good grief! Has Coach been turned into a ZOMBIE?! I've reviewed a number of the Bailey Kids books, and believe them to be good choices for intermediate readers. They're short, the language is easy, the type is large and easy to read (I'd say about 14-16 point), and the plot is logical and flows. As a teacher, I often use these books to hook in reluctant readers who don't normally read for pleasure, but who also might be too spooked by the Goosebumps series by Stine. As of this writing, there are some 40 books to the series, each involving some mysterious creature, anything from vampires to aliens to mermaids. It isn't necessary to read the series in order, though some characters make repeat appearances in other books. A lot of books in the series can be holiday-based, like "Cupid Doesn't Flip Hamburgers" or "Santa Claus Doesn't Mop Floors". Most have a gentle blend of silliness and creepiness that is engaging without being terrifying. It's a fun series, and I've found myself reading almost ALL of them, even when I'm not using them to teach with! So, get yourself a few and follow along with the gang's adventures!!

Have you ever heard of an alien that wears braces? This book is about four kids named Howie, Eddie, Melody, and Liza. These kids had a substitute in art and they had a feeling she was an alien. Help them solve if the art teacher is an alien or not. The reason I like this book was it is a mystery. Is the art teacher an alien? Another reason I liked this book was that they did some spying and they might get caught spying. The author wrote this book to show how curious these kids are. A lesson the author wrote in this book was to have confidence in yourself.
When Eddie goes to the principal's office, he meets Mrs. Zork. Apparently, when they go to art, their teacher isn't their. Mrs. Zork is. The art teacher isn't there because he's sick. Then, Mrs. Jeepers gets sick. Mrs. Zork loves color. Infact, Eddie's red hair is next. When Eddie and Howie go to Mrs. Zork's house, they saw all the color that she stole. Can Howie and Eddie get all the world's color back? Find out in this book!
Mrs. Zork is the new art teacher, and she is by far one of the strangest Bailey School characters yet. When she first comes to class, her hair is dead white, as is her skin-she looks like chalk. And what's with this business of her wearing braces?? And why did the power go out in the school right before she arrived? Come to think of it, what was that strange sound and light in the sky right before she came to school...?? My gosh, is she an alien from outer space?! "Aliens Don't..." is the 7th book in the Bailey School Kids series, and marks a return to strange and creepy characters. Some other books, like "Santa Claus Doesn't Mop Floors", were more funny and enjoyable than weird and creepy. Something about Mrs. Zork, with her pale skin, white hair and odd ways (she doesn't even know what painting is!) is just plain strange. What's far MORE strange is how things seem to be loosing their colors when she's around... Pictures near the art room seem to be fading, flowers are dull-looking when she's around them, and what's more, isn't Mrs. Zork's pale skin starting to show some color?? The Bailey School Kids series is a fast paced, often funny set of books that will appeal to a lot of young readers who are looking to branch out into short, illustrated chapter books. The subject matter-- strange and supernatural creatures with an oddly human twist (like wearing braces)-- is likely to appeal to most young readers. There's plenty of evidence pointing to Mrs. Zork being an alien from outer space. However, like the other books in the series, there is also room for doubt, usually expressed through the opinions of the unbelieving class clown, Eddie. The fact that only about 4 or 5 of the 3rd graders at Bailey ever even NOTICE these weird goings-on and that they share a secret is one of the appeals to this series. "Aliens Don't..." is a more engaging read than some of the other books in this series, perhaps because Mrs. Zork is just so strange and creepy (really, wouldn't a woman with dead-white hair and skin and shiny, glowing braces creep YOU out??). Yes, the illustrations are a bit cartoon-like and may detract from the story for some readers, but it's also a fun, swift read for beginning and intermediate readers. It comes recommended.

The Bailey School Kids is an addictive series. This is number 8 and already I'm working my way through the next 5 or 6, and I'm an adult! Less creepy-spooky than others in this series ("Werewolves Don't..." and "Aliens Don't..." are more spooky than this one), this book is nevertheless a lot of fun. Gene mysteriously appears and laughs a loud laugh every time one of the kids offhandedly wishes for something. Then, that wish comes true! While our buddy Eddie doesn't believe that Gene could be a magical creature (does Eddie EVER believe anything??), readers will be very hard pressed to explain that he's not when they find out what happens to the Kid's normally boring, work-driven teacher! The "...Don't..." series (as I call them) are all quick reads that weigh in 'round or under 100 pages. The story is easy to read and the plot catchy--what would YOU do if you wishes seemed to come true from a purple bicycle-riding genie? This makes "Genies Don't..." a good choice for beginning-to-intermediate readers or children/students who are normally reluctant to read. I wouldn't classify it as MY personal favorite, but I still enjoyed the book a good deal and would recommend it.

Book Description Jessica Wakefield finally found him. Jeremy. The one who loves her for who she is. The one who helps her forget. Forget what? Forget Will Simmons... The one who never bothered to know her at all. Reviews (30)
Next up is Melissa Fox, who is hospitalized after trying to kill herself in book #6, right after Will Simmons broke up with her. Most everybody feels guilty about this incident, especially Jess and Will, yet that's not stopping either one of them from thinking about each other. Could there still be some possible chemistry between these two? (I hope not. Jess seems happy enough with Jeremy, without Will ruining things.) And lastly: Maria Slater had caught Elizabeth Wakefield and Conner McDermott kissing, and now she's not speaking to either one of them, mostly Liz though. And not surprisingly, Conner is now avoiding Liz, too, so she can "work things out" with Maria. More like so he can leave the "relationship" quietly. There were some really good lists, journal entries, and assignments in "Boy Meets Girl", in particular Liz's freestyle writing assignment about the meaning of love and Maria's "Why Books Are Better Than People" list (my favorite). This is probably one of the better books I've read so far in this series. Jessica is finally back to her old self, worrying about boys and appearances, plus being more assertive, which was the biggest character trait missing in the previous six SVHSY books. "Boy Meets Girl" is worth reading if you finally want to see Melissa get her comeuppance and Jessica land on her two feet again. For readers age 12+

Book Description Alice McKinley is finding that fifth grade is full of mysteries. The famous bus does do some magic here: Turning into a "bat bus" to demonstrate echolocation, and then turning the children into bats (temporarily!) so they can learn about bat food, bat predators, bat flight speed, and general "hanging around (upside down from the branches of a tree)." Facts replace suspicion (Is Ms. Frizzle herself a vampire?Did she turn the parents into vampires?), and the story ends with yet another pun.(Be your own judge about whether this story might be too frightening for the very young). With bright, colorful (but not extraordinary) illustrations on each one of the story's 28 pages, and two pages with letters about bats and bat facts. Probably not as exciting as Batman, but fans of "The Magic School Bus" and nature facts should love it. ... Read more

Book Description He came from the stars -- and sixth grade will never be the same! The aliens have finally made contact! But when the first ambassador from another planet arrives, he insists that his son, Pleskit Meenom, be treated like any other citizen on Earth. Which is why Pleskit has become the first purple kid in Ms. Weintraub's sixth grade class. For Tim Tompkins, who has been waiting his entire life to meet an alien, this is like a dream come true. But when Pleskit invites Tim back to the embassy and they stumble across a plan to sabotage the alien mission, Tim's dream becomes a life-threatening nightmare. Reviews (6)
It's about a young, purple alien named Pleskit that is taken along by his father to Earth as part of a trade mission. Pleskit is enrolled in a public school, and, thanks to some wrong information about how Earthlings always speak the truth, Pleskit succeeds in making most of the kids at school hate him. Except for Tim Tompkins, that is, resident alien enthusiast. He's psyched out of his mind to see a real, live alien and wants to make friends with Pleskit, but something always comes up- like, Pleskit seemingly attacking another boy at school, for example. So Tim forms a plan to meet Pleskit by hiding in his 'personal needs' room (a.k.a. bathroom) and hoping to make a good impression. Surprisingly, he does, and is invited to Pleskit's house. Tim's excited, of course, and Pleskit is outraged to hear that his database was tampered with (the whole Earthlings lie thing). They decide to scope out their number one suspect's room, but they see him coming and quickly duck into Mikta-Makta-Mookta's room (Pleskit's father's secretary). There, they discover that she has something that shouldn't be in her room... I really liked this book, and it's great for kids that are in fifth and sixth grades.

Our small band of 3rd graders is presented with one of their newest run-ins with the strange and supernatural.Out on a trip to the Burger Doodle, they run into a new counter worker, Scout. In addition to having an odd name, Scout is an odd character!First off, her skin is ashen white, she wears a hooded black sweatshirt, and her eyes are blood red!!Speaking of blood red, what's that weird, thick red syrup she's always putting on her own ice cream? It looks a lot like...like blood! It doesn't take long for the Bailey Kids to begin to wonder about her and her strange way of almost GLIDING over the tiles.Besides, she doesn't ever laugh or even crack a smile. It's not long before someone suggests that she might be a ghoul:an undead creature in the service of a vampire who is in search of new places for their vampire masters to live. When the Kids find out that Ms. Jeepers, their vampire teacher, is thinking of having her family move to Bailey City, they decide that action must be taken or else the city will be overrun by vampires!!One for a teacher is bad enough! This is the 31st installment in the Bailey School Kids series and is a bit creepier than some of the others in the series. It's still got all the elements of the other books, a wisecracking Eddie who refuses to believe that any of these weird folk are anything but that--just weird, not supernatural, a fast pace and fun plot. I've reviewed a number of the books in the series and am finding them quite addicting. They're fast reads for beginning-to-intermediate readers (though an adult will likely finish them in less than half an hour), and the language is simple and fun.I often recommend this series for students & children who are not very interested in reading because the pace is fast, the plot is simple, and they're generally a lot of fun to read. So, scoop yourself out some vanilla and settle in with the Bailey Kids in this installment!
