3-0 out of 5 stars Should be more Baby-user friendly
It's been just 5 days since I bought this book for my nearly 3year old and already have mixed feelings about it. First let me write the positives. My son enjoys it a lot loves the steering wheel, the carousel, the doors which open and shut. My complaint is that the book should be more Baby-user friendly, meaning it should be much better able to withstand a baby's pulls. The area around the tabs which work the escalator and the window are already torn, as is the magazine slot. The carousel is simply too difficult for my baby to turn as is sending the plane in a loop. Do not think this book will last a month under my child's explorations.

5-0 out of 5 stars exquisite airplane pop-up
you won't believe how cool this book is. You get to fly an airplane (the steering wheel pops up and you can turn it!) and coast along a moving sidewalk. So perfect for a child going on a plane ride. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Who's Curriculum?
This has many "worksheets," no explanations, no really interesting problems, and did not match our fifth-grade curriculum. It doesn't even match our fourth-grade curriculum--way too basic! It's just drill, drill, drill. At least it offers good practice for basics that many fifth graders already have nailed. I appreciate its easy-to read design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better
My 10 year old son loves this book! He's already completed more than 1/3 of the book and it's only September 19.

I like the outline, plenty of review exercises (to increase a sense of mastery) and it appears to cover enough topics to match this year's curriculum. I've already ordered the 3rd grade version for his younger brother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Made Easy: Fifth Grade Workbook
This book is full of great additional practice related to our state math standards. For children who are struggling with Everyday Math and need more paractice in multiple formats, this series is "the cat's meow." Children will love the star reinforcement stickers and the progress chart which help them to track their skills. Parents and teachers will love the answer key in the rear where you can not only check work but make a record of specific errors on minatures of the actual worksheets to guide later review and practice once the worksheets have been completed or sent home. These books are a great supplemental tool. I have actually purchased several different levels and find them all well thought out and highly useful for grade appropriate math skills remediation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing math to 10-11 year olds
The last book in the Math Made Easy series of workbooks. Each workbook matches the math curriculum so your child will reach their full potential on the all-important standardized tests. In fact, these books have been compiled and tested by a team of math experts to increase your child's confidence, enjoyment and success.

You will find practice pages for all the major topics covered in Grade 5. There is a definite emphasis on addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals. There is a review of Grade 4 topics and plenty of Times Tables practice. There is also a Progress Chart with gold stars to record achievement.

At the back of the book the "Answer Section with Parents' Notes" provides answers to all the activities in the book. The notes for each page also help to explain common problems and solutions are given to ensure that your child understands how and why they made errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars You have to be a fan
I bought this book after reading all the great reviews. It is a nice book, bright colors, lots of attention to detail, silly story line, but I didn't think the areas for the child to feel were large enough. The sticky candy in Max's pajamas is just about the size of a child's fingertip, the lace curtain is just a thin slip of fabric, the lightning is a skinny zig-zag of foil and the "cookie crumbs" sandpaper is only about a quarter-inch high. There are other touch-and-feel books that provide a much larger exploratory surface. Still, this book does contain a good variety (sticky candy, rough crumbs, fur, smelly sock, etc.)I'm not sure why, but that smelly sock always seems to be such a hit!

5-0 out of 5 stars A touch of genius by Rosemary Wells
What a joy of a book! My baby loves feeling the surprises on each page from the crumbs in Max's pockets to the gummy nightcrawlers on his feet! A sweet story with tactile turns on each page. A classic in the making, I can hardly wait for a sequel!

5-0 out of 5 stars A splendid board book for toddlers & preschoolers.
It's time for bed, but Max can't fall asleep in this board book for toddlers who will find here a delightful bedtime dilemma. Bright pages with tactile cut-outs attract attention with touch and feel surprises as Max faces a too-long night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Max and Ruby star in this lovely story about going to bed
My children adore Max, and this book is no exception. My three-year-old had me read it to him no less than three times in a row today. He loves to touch the lace curtain, soft blanket, and the "spilled" water. And what a sister! Everyone needs a sister like Ruby!

Any parent who's tried to get their own "Max" to bed can sympathize with Ruby, the long suffering and ever patient sibling.

What a joyful little book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodnight Max
The irrepresible Max and his ever-patient sister Ruby are backonce again in this humorous yet soothing bedtime tale, complete with"touch and feel" fun.

Max is unable to fall asleep, andhis mishaps require continuous changes of his pajamas. My 3- 1/2 year old grandson, a Max fan from babyhood, especially loves the feel of the cookie crumbs in the bed and the sticky candy on the pajama feet. Peeking under the real fabric blanket is also a big hit, and the "smelly" sock is met with hillarity every time.

The format is an oversized board book, but with an expanded text and richly detailed illustrations. The designs on Max's fun-theme pajamas makes us want to own them; the silver moon is appropriately silvery, and the fly swatter is made of real netting.

Goodnight Max is a wonderful companion piece to "Goodnight, Moon" and "Bedtime for Frances". Babies would love touching the fuzzy teddy bear and Max's furry tale; older pre-schoolers can open and close the window. It's the best Max yet. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Twister on Tuesday
In the book Twister on Tuesday Jack and Annie go to pioneer times. Jack teaches Jeb, a older boy to read and write.Annie made friends with two yonger students in her class.I really recommend this book. I'm sort of disopointed that I didn't get to read the whole series in a row.If you are into historical fiction books then you will probly like all the Magic Tree House Adventues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twister on Tuesday
This story was about a boy named Jack who is eight years old and his sister Annie who is seven years old. In the first book thay find a magic tree house in the woods. They find out that if they point to a book cover, that is where they will go. Mary Pope has written more books in this series. In Twister on Tuesday, Jack and Annie land in front of a schoolhouse and soon a giant twister appears. Read to find out what happens. My favorite part is when they ate frozen potatoes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
I read the Magic Tree House series when I was eight or nine. I especially liked this one because I'm really interested the pioneer days. Jack and his sister Annie are whisked back to the 1870s in the magic tree house to find "something to learn." They find a pioneer school. Then, Jack and Annie realize that they have found "something to learn." But as Jack and Annie are heading back to the tree house to go home, they see something off in the distance-a twister! In their research book, it says that a cellar is in the school, but Jack and Annie know that the teacher and students wouldn't know about it since there is a rug over it. They go back to the school and tell them about it. Everyone gets in the cellar, and thank Jack and Annie for saving their lives. Jack also becomes friends with Jeb, an older boy who was mean to him before. I recommend this book to grades 1-4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Critique of Twister on Tuesday
In my opinion this book was superb. This story was about two young children, Jack and Anniewho go on a quest to rescue the kingom of Camelot. They need to discover something to follow,to send,to learn, and something to lend. On this adventure they need to learn something. this subject takes them to the prairie in the time of the pioneer. In the prairie they find themselves at a schoolhouse educated by an 18 year old and there they find they find something to learn while saving their class from a twister (tornado). What I liked about this story was that there was lots of truthful details and it was weel built. I reccomend this book to reading levels 2 to 4 and who like endless series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Twister

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for both kids and parents
For kids (5 years old and up), it helps them to understand how language/idioms/cliches/phrases can be used. For parents, it's one of the funniest kids' books I've read.

One thing to note, though: you'll probably have to explain what's going on to your kids. I have a very bright 5-year-old, and she didn't get what was happening (although I was ROTFL). But once I explained it, the book made more sense and she really enjoyed the book. So don't expect to simply read it to your kids and think that they'll "get it", unless your kids are much older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with pain and confusion
This book tells the story of a small boy who is quite confused over the things people say- -everyone around him always seems to be saying the scariest things, and it's making him upset. One day, he accidentally breaks his red truck, and his mother tells him that it must have broken his heart. He takes his mother's words literally, and then sets to worrying about all the other upsetting things that people say, like hold your tongue, and cry your lungs out. Finally, his mother explains the meanings of these phrases so that the boy can find something else to worry about. The story is quite cute and may provoke a lot of thought in young minds about words and language. The book might also be a good one to read to youngster who is bereaved over breaking something. It has about 450 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Continued Greatness!
This book continues the wonderful, simplistic animation the original delivered if not better. The first and this one a must for any child.
A funtastic read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Idioms for Fifth Graders
This rollicking story is a great way to reinforce the meaning and use of idioms in a fifth grade classroom. My English Language Learner students really appreciated the humor and identified with the problems faced by the boy in the story. Mrs. Power's fifth graders give this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Too Funny!!!
If you have a child in the 4-6 year old range you must read this book! My son read it in pre-K last year and borrowed it so often from his teacher that we just bought one. It shows how literally children can take everything we say. And if you like the one be sure to read "More Parts"! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Complex and WORDY
I am a sophomore in AP Algebra2 and we are on the last year of using these books. They are nothing but trouble and have ridiculous scenarios. Their word problems are unusual in the fact that they use many non-useful terms e.g., t=0=1991, which in turn can confuse any person! DON'T BUY IT! unless you just want answers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for all Ages
This book is both a useful resource and an enjoyable way to past a rainy day. Ideal for all age groups - preteens will love learning about 'famous' mistakes - teens will get interested in thinking of ones left out of the book and adults we be amazed.
Overall fun book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't make anything if you can't make mistakes
My mom always told me that you can't make anything if you can't make mistakes. This book proves the point aptly, highlighting several mistakes that turned into common and often-loved inventions (chocolate chip cookies, Coca-Cola, the Slinky). This is an enlightening book to share with kids, encouraging them to realize that taking risks, learning to improvise and experiment is often the best way to learn, even if you don't end up creating something new and wonderful.

3-0 out of 5 stars made me smile but did not really enlighten
this book is ok...that's about as far as i would go. there were some interesting quirks but i felt this was all too shallow.
it did provide some interesting cocktail banter and it does give value for money.
you'll finish it within half an hour and forget it under your bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars a reader in Michigan
The stories in this book are amazing. Many everyday things were really discovered accidentally. Our family, from a 75 year old grandmother to an eight year old, learned many new things. Our favorite "mistakes" are tea, the Slinky and the ice cream cone. A great addition to your home library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book is great! It deserves more than 5 stars. I have read this book more than once, and I plan to read it again. The stories behind the inventions are amazing! I learned so many new facts. The multitudes of Gary Paulsen fans (or more accurately, Brian fans) will be thrilled to find that the author has penned yet another story about Brian Robeson. Although Paulsen once claimed that he would "write no more about Brian," he seems to have been softened by the "staggering amounts of mail from readers" begging for more about the teen who is more at home alone in the wilderness than in the hustle and bustle of city life. In Brian’s Hunt, the 16-year-old returns to the remote woods and lakes of Canada, where he encounters a mysteriously injured dog. His experiences two years earlier, after surviving a plane crash and months alone with only a hatchet to protect and provide for himself (Hatchet, Brian’s Winter, etc.), have prepared him well to survive now. But can anything prime him for the horror that awaits him on an island campsite where he intends to meet his Cree friends?

This short episode is rife with the kind of gritty--even gruesome--details readers have come to expect from the Newbery Honor author. In an afterword, Paulsen reminds readers that he bases his stories on personal experiences and his extensive knowledge of the wild side of nature.

Confidential to avid fans: an intimation of romance amid all the rugged drama hints that this will not be the last Brian book, either. (Ages 10 to 13) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nykolas Connors review
I think that the book Brian's hunt was one of the best books that I have ever written. The book just kept me wanting to read. My teacher read it out loud but it felt like I was there with him this time. This book was the best book of 2004 that I have ever read. I think that I would not write so much stuff. It didn't end like I was thinking. It was the better then what I thought it would of ended. I loved the book from began to the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lone camping trip results in a wounded dog's appearance
Brian's Hunt is the sequel to Gary Paulsen's Hatchet and continues stories about a boy named Brian and his wilderness skills. Brian's Hunt brings Brian back to the wilderness where a lone camping trip results in a wounded dog's appearance. As Brian cares for her, he faces the dual challenges of helping her and his Cree native friends in this moving story of courage.

5-0 out of 5 stars difference
This a good read. Though it is shorter than most of Paulsen's work, it is good. I didn't like the changes though. Like he brought more books than what The List in Brian's Return said, freeze dried food, the three pairs of moccasins, the monoculars, and the barbed fish tips for his arrows. Plus it didn't mention Caleb, after all he wouldn't be there without him. And it didn't mention his medicine or Billy. It was written in a different in a different way than the other Brian books. If you have read the other Brian books you will see a different writing style. It might be because Brian is finally in a hurry to get somewhere, but The River isn't written in this way. Overall I liked it and will continue reading Paulsen's work.I have been reading for more than seven years and liking his work. I have never and probably never find a Paulsen book I don't like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is one of my favorite Gary Paulsen books. I really enjoyed the twist of Brian finding a friend in this book, instead of being all alone. Also, he finally starts to notice girls. I also enjoyed the suspense of the mysterious island. His hunt for the bear that caused all the problems(I won't be specific because I don't want to ruin the story)is also very enjoyable. When he finally finds the bear, enjoyment and suspense come togethet with action, to form the perfect ending:the final battle between man and beast. I thought Brian's Hunt by Gary Paulsen was a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book
I would recommend this book to students who are looking for a good textbook to review from. My daughter used this book throuhgout junior high and she has done well in Health Science and Biology.
When my niece came looking for books, because her son was entering grade 8, she needed that book and my daughter was very reluctant to give it to her. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars She loves math now!
My 9 year old had always loved math but this year we moved and neither of us liked the math curriculum the new school used. She began hating math! We began homeschool (there were other problems too) BUT she continued fighting with the math work. I purchased this book and after only 4 lessons she's hooked on math again! She loves the tricks and VOLUNTARILY makes up her own problems to solve! She's already seeing how the "tricks" help her in her "normal" math work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for math teachers!!!
I plan on using this book to enhance my students mental math abilities. This book is a great way to do the mental math and focus on that higher order thinking. This book is organized well, and is well-suited for classroom use. There were many tricks that I didn't even know existed and everything is still based on basic math. This can work from the slowest to the most advanced learner. ... Read more

Book Description

The boys are back after 40 years! Author's Edition withpreviously unpublished text restored from the original manuscripts.

A strange sea monster appears on the lake ...a fortune is unearthed from an old cannon ...a valuable dinosaur egg is stolen. Watch out as the Mad Scientists turn Mammoth Falls upside down!

Take seven, lively, "normal" boys -- one an inventive genius -- give them a clubhouse for cooking up ideas, an electronics lab above the town hardware store, and a good supply of Army surplus equipment, and you, dear reader, have a boyhood dream come true and a situation that bears watching.

In the hands of an author whose own work involved technological pioneering, the proceedings are well worth undivided attention, as the boys explore every conceivable possibility for high and happy adventure in the neighborhood of Mammoth Falls. To the unutterable confusion of the local dignitaries -- and the unalloyed delight of Bertrand Brinley's fans -- the young heroes not only outwit their insidious rival, Harmon Muldoon, but emerge as town heroes. Here, captured under one cover, are the fun-filled escapades of the young scientists whose exciting capers debuted in Boys' Life magazine 40 years ago. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite book of all time!!!!
I remember reading The Mad Scientists' Club for the first time when I was only about eight years old. I must have read and re-read that book from cover to cover over a dozen times since. It is a collection of stories about the escapades of six boys in the town of Mammoth Falls who use their wits and scientific knowledge to get in (and out) of all kinds of fun mischief, including "haunting" a house, creating a lake monster, and entering a hot air balloon race. Essentially, these six young men dive head-first into all the kinds of adventures that I longed to have as a young man. Brinley's book influenced my own adventures and ideas as I grew up, and my own stories and writings have been heavily influenced by the memories I have of this book. If you ever get a chance to read this book - DO IT!!! You will discover the adventures you always wanted to have become real in The Mad Scientists' Club.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to reading.
I remember reading The Mad Scientists' Club aloud with my dad and mom as a child. We'd alternate chapters, pausing only long enough for the laughter to subside. Later I re-read the book in my mid-twenties, simply for nostalgia's sake. I discovered that the humor had lost none of its charm, and that the characters were still the same gang of ornery, creative geniuses that I'd remembered from youth. So much fun, and such a great introduction to reading. It's not tragic or soul-searching or brilliant prose; it's BETTER than all of these things: it's a page-turning series of adventures -- almost a '50s-era Tom Sawyer -- that celebrates intelligence, curiosity, and youthful imagination. Order this fantastic book for every child you know. (And don't miss The New Adventures of the Mad Scientists' Club, either!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of my childhood
I ordered this book through Scholastic when I was in grade school back in the 70's. I always kept my copy, and I've handed it down to my son. I ordered another for my daughter and then purchased all three books for both of my kids. I highly recommend this book and the others by Mr. Brinley. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does any one remember this book as a movie?
I remember seeing this book as a movie when I was a kid and I would love to find out the name that it was released under. I remember seeing it in school then on TV a little while later. The actors were British or Australian...that type of accent. I don't remember if I saw the movie or read the book first. It was probably around 1974 when I saw it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really, Really Cool
What's good about the Mad Scientists' Club book is that there are a bunch of stories in one book, and some are really funny, like the time they built a Loch Ness Monster and put it in Strawberry Lake. I think the funniest story in the book is The Unidentified Flying Man of Mammoth Falls. So anyone who likes to read really funny, mysterious, cool things, get this book--it's good for you. ... Steve Jenkins (What Do You Do with a Tail Like This ?) returns with another inventive, involving picture book--this time inviting young readers to see how they measure up against a variety of different animals (represented in colorful, cut-paper collages at actual size).

Each spread of Actual Size presents a new animal or two for readers to check out, along with a few interesting facts and physical dimensions. Some of the colorful collages display the entire animal at actual scale (like the fleshy, 36-inch length of a giant Gippsland earthworm)while others can only feature what fits on the page (an African elephant's foot, a Siberian tiger's face, or even just a gaping maw sporting a few four-inch-long teeth of a great white shark). Two fun fold-outs show a Goliath frog ("It's big enough to catch and eat birds and rats") and the long, toothy smile of a saltwater crocodile ("the world's largest reptile... a man-eater").

Jenkins' collages capture the texture and color of these cut-out creatures, and the thoughtful inclusion of an illustrated index shows each animal in its scaled-down entirety, accompanied by longer, fact-filled descriptions. While younger kids might not appreciate the subtlety of the book's clever "actual-size" trope, readers young and old will love all the close-up views and learn a few things along the way. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Steve Jenkins' Actual Size can be enjoyed as a work of art. The animals or, if a large animal, part of an animal is illustrated using handmade paper collage. What may sound like just a clever concept, when skillfully executed, resulted in an awesome book. Some of the animals shown are the pigmy shrew, atlas moth, dwarf goby, Goliath frog, and giant squid. The dimensions of the animal is noted and as well as a paragraph about such things as habitat and diet which makes this a very interesting book. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the coolest book ever
This book has artwork depicting the actual size of abnormally large and abnormally small animals. You get to get up close and personal with a 3/4-inch fish and the 12 inch eye of the giant squid (which can grow up to 50+ feet long!!) and everything in the book is depicted actual size. We used this book for a storytime and the young kids LOVED comparing their hands against the critters in the book. Best of all, one of my co-workers literally jumped about six feet from a seated position just from glancing at the picture of the 12-inch in diameter spider. The book is worth just that alone!! Highly recommended for kids to understand the scale of nature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Butterfly House
This book is about a girl who saves a caterpillar
from a hungry blue jay. The girl keeps the caterpilar until it is a butterfly. My favorite part is when they make the caterpillar's little house. I LOVE the illustrations.I'd recommend this book to people who like butterflies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very warm celebration.
I saw a copy of BUTTERFLY HOUSE and bought it right away because I was attracted to the love and warmth that the book radiates through its story and illustrations on one of my favorite subjects, the butterfly. Butterfly lovers can look for MALINDA MARTHA MEETS MARIPOSA too, different in that it features the Monarch rather than the Painted Lady and different again in that it offers the dimension of acting out the life-cycle as a play. Similar is the love for the butterfly that the children will experience in each book. One doesn't seem complete without the other. Together a child will build a life-time of love and knowledge on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story of a girl her grandfather and butterflies.
This was a delightful book written by Eve Bunting highlighting her wonderful style of writing. This book caught my eye at first by the beautiful cover but then I was spell bound by the wonderful illustrations and the delightful story. I was also attracted to this book because of the butterflies. I am a teacher and my first grade class just raised painted lady butterflies, just like in the book. It was a wonderful book to share with my students, especially on the day we released our own butterflies. The book helped explain that it was okay to cry but to be happy at their new found freedom. I would recommend this book to anyone at any age. ... Read more
