5-0 out of 5 stars Gimmie Cookie Please!
This book is my son's favorite bedtime book, as it has been for over a year now. This book has been instrumental in creating a good foundation of manners for my son. We also use this book to reinforce sign language for "Please" and "Thank You."

Concerning the language used: If one reads Cookie Monster's request in the Cookie Monster voice, then children recognize the difference between human language and monster language.

I highly suggest this book. It is a fast read with great results!

4-0 out of 5 stars You can't lose with Elmo!
My almost 10 month old son loves Elmo. But truthfully, I think he likes holding the book (great for diaper changes) more than he likes to hear it read to him. But I do use this book bedtime, and it works like a charm!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it and my son does too!
This book is wonderful. Not only did it motivate my 2 year old to learn the words please and thank you, he seems to have learned alot more with his Sesame Street pals here. The picures are so vivid and life like (or should I say character like :>)we've used this book to identify his pals, learn body parts (where is Cookie Monsters eyes...) and learn colors. Great book at an amazingly low price!

3-0 out of 5 stars nice try
I didn't like their definition of manners. When Cookie monster wanted a cookie he said "gimme cookie-me want cookie". In the book elmo teaches that cookie monster should actually say "gimme cookie, please". I just don't consider that good manners. Other than that it's O.K.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to learn
Elmo's Good Manners Game is a great way to teach toddlers (especially Elmo fans!) common manners, such as saying please and thank you.

With colorful illustrations, Elmo helps teach Cookie Monster how to ask for a cookie nicely; Bert to greet someone politely; the monsters how to excuse themselves from the table; Big Bird how to share and Herry how to apologize.

It's a simple way to (hopefully) help ingrain good habits into little reader's minds! ... Read more

Learning words and numbers is fun with Big Bird, Elmo, Grover, and the other Sesame Street friends along to help. In the first half of this sturdy oversized book, every page features a letter, A to Z, accompanied by a scene featuring objects starting with that letter. The M spread, for example, shows a moonlit mountain landscape, with Sesame Street detectives Ernie and Bert investigating (with a magnifying glass, of course) the mystery of the missing mitten. Young readers will take pleasure in pointing out the mitten under a tree with a mouse curled up inside and a moose lurking nearby. In the second half of the book, illustrations depict one broom sweeping, swooshing; two hammers pounding, pounding; three big bales of hay; four round rubber tires, and so on up to 20, then continuing with 30, 40, 50, etc., to 100. By then, it takes an entire Sesame Street Fair to show all the items so far enumerated. Two educational books in one terrific treasury! (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Sesame Street Fan
I bought this book for my 16 month old son. He loves The Sesame Street Word book and thought this would be a good addition to his collection. He likes it okay, but still prefers the Word Book hands down. It starts with the alphabet devoting one to two pages per letter. Each page(s) has the letter and pictures of things starting with the letter. It also has the word naming the picture. I agree with other reviewers..some letters were not depicted very well compared to others. The second half covers numbers 1-20 then skip counts by tens numbers 20-100. All are done with pictures. If you had one book to buy I'd get The Sesame Street Word Book. However if you want to add to other educational books you have, this is a great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Favorite for Toddlers!
My two year old son absolutely LOVES this book! There are many colorful and interesting drawings of objects on every page. I find that my son's vocabulary has greatly increased since Sesame Street Treasury ABC and 123 came into our house since a wide variety of words are clearly depicted. Of course, all the Sesame Street characters are also included in the illustrations which accompany each letter or number. This is a fun and educational book and I would very highly recommend it to anyone buying for a toddler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for your toddler!
I bought this book for my 14-month-old nephew and he absolutely loves it! The pages are big, yet simple with lots of stuff for baby to look at. Each page is a full color picture devoted to a letter of the alphabet or a number. Perfect for promoting early learning skills. Given the choice, I'd definitely buy this book again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good sized picture book
Pages are big pictures with one word text next to an object. Apple, airplane, bicycle, boat, etc. Nice feature, 2 books in one. 1st half, abc, 2nd half 1,2,3. I wish there were more words for the neglected letters q,u,v,x,y,z. I liked that the pages where completely colored. No blank areas. Good sized book. All the characters show up in the book, plus a few more which I liked. There is no set theme or story, just the alpha and numbers. Good for little ones that just are learning objects and pointing to them. I enjoy that with my 19 month old son. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sesame Street helps us learn about diversity.
I have a dog-eared copy of this book that I have used for years in my preschool classroom. The format of the book is repetive - "We are all alike. We all have hair to keep us warm." Then on the next page, "We are all different, our hair looks different". The children are immediately attracted to the Sesame Street characters and the possibility of guessing each character by their distinguishing feature. Often the favorite page is the one about noses, each character's nose is shown as if in a page of photographs showing just the noses - ... to The Count to Snuffalupagus.

5-0 out of 5 stars We're Different, We're the Same is great for classrooms
I teach kindergarten and use this book every year at the beginning of the year. It takes each part of a person and shows how they are both the same and different. Example "our hair is different" then they show a variety of hair types. On the next page it continues: "Our hair is the same. It grows on us in several places. It warms our heads and frames oour faces."

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially good for adopted children
We really like this book for our 3-yr old chinese-born daughter. It not only teaches her racial harmony, but also shows her that her parents are more like her than different. We like to give this book as a gift to other children and it is appropriate for any child. The illustrations are cute and we have had many a giggle as we point each other out in the pictures ("Daddy's hair looks like Big Bird's!"). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Personal Favorites
If your heart melted when this song appeared on "Sesame Street," then you'll love this book. If you are not already familiar with it, Ernie dreams about the amazing places he'd like to go. He learns that it's great to have an imagination, but there's no better place than being at home with loved ones. This is a short book that would make a great bedtime story for any preschool child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun song, great illustrations
My 18 month loved the Sesame Street song that is sung by Ernie so she was hooked from the start. Additionally, the illustrations are really beautiful. When I am reading it to her, I catch my 4 year old peaking over listening in. This book is a hit in my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark's all time Favorite
This book is wonderful. It is my 20 month old son's favorite book from the moment he saw it the first time. I wish there were more of these Seasame Song books. The illustration is beautiful (I don't care what the paid review says!). Anyone who enjoys singing and/or reading with their child will love this book. Now when my son sees the song being song on Seasame Street he runs to his cabinet and pulls out the book. Its the first book he gets out in the morning and I have to make him leave it down stairs on his way to bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book
My son and husband loved this song from Sesame Street so I was so excited they had a book of it. The illustrations are beautiful and my one year old loves the funny pictures of Ernie. We sing the song as a lullabye and it works like a charm!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of those not-so-babyish Sesame Street songs
"I Don't Want to Live on The Moon" has been one of my mother's favorite songs. The song is mostly in Sesame Street episodes about space, but the main theme of this soothing song is really about having wishes rather than about going to the moon. It tells how when one has wishes, it is hard to decide whether or not he or she really wants them to come true because of the changes that might happen if they did. I sing the song when I think of my wishes and at nighttime when I see the moon. They really ought to make more books of those not-so-babyish Sesame Street songs such as, "We are all Earthlings". Buy this book for somebody who's always got wishes on their mind about which they have tough decisions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent chronicle of Sesame Street's first 30 years
In this, the first Sesame Street book for adults, We can see a history of the show from it's begining to its 30th birthday.

I have fond memories of this show and am distressed that this fine book has become out of print so quickly.

It has a history of the many characters on the show, including ones who were nixed for various reasons. Anybody remember Don Music or Gladys the Cow?

How about the day Mr. Hoopers's death was announced. I missed that part and probably would not have remembered it as I would have only been 3 at the time.

As I look back to my childhood years, I have many fond memories of the show and would want to see this book reissued.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sesame Street Book for Kids at Heart
What a wonderfully fun and informative book detailing 30 years of the best children's television show ever. I bought this book when my son started watching Sesame Street, and reading this book is like going through a scrapbook of my own childhood. It's all here: the old characters, the songs, the rhymes, and the magic of Jim Henson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book! Entertaining read!
Published in 1999 for Sesame Street's 30th anniversary, it is chuck-full of facts, trivia, pictures, lyrics... This is the second-best thing to a DVD best-of release, and is a great companion to the Songs from the Street CD box set.

This book is a great trip down memory lane. This is why it's more interesting for us people born before 1980 than for the Elmo generation. Still, if you want to grasp what the early years were like, this is the book to read! And if you remember Mr. Hooper, I dare you not to cry when reading the transcript of Big Bird learning of his passing away.

Hopefully, there will be a updated and expanded reprint of this book for this year's Sesame Street 35th anniversary, so that people who missed it when it came out 5 years ago can still enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teenagers who are into Sesame Street
I found out about this book from a website. It shows a lot of secret facts about the origins of such characters and their names, and describes some old clips, most of which are still used on the show.
But the show has changed a little since the book was published and some details are slightly outdated or not included, for instance the producer's name changed in 2000, Mr. Handford no longer runs Hooper's Store(what happened to him?), Gina became a vet in 2001, and the Fix-it Shop became the Mail-it Shop in 2002.
Buy it and you'll have plenty of flashbacks of the show!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a copy while you can!
Reading Sesame Street Unpaved was like taking a joyful walk down memory lane. A fan of the show since I was a toddler, I savored each and every page of this lovingly crafted retrospective. I really appreciated how the book managed to be sweet, sentimental, and witty all at the same time. It is obvious that the folks behind Sesame Street are not only geniuses, but also endowed with a keen sense of humor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Monster faces make happy faces
My one-year old daughter loves this book so much that she has completely worn it out. It is quite durable but she carries it everywhere. It is her favorite. She enjoys making 'monster voices' to go with the monster faces. She has taken to reading it to herself at times. We love this book and are buying it for a friend's newborn - along with another copy for my daughter!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our very favorites
Our 2 two year olds love Monster Faces. The wonderful part of this little book is the way it promotes interaction and playfulness between reader and child! Our son & daughter get so excited when I start reading the book -- they dance around and giggle. We have a ball making our own faces along with the friendly monsters in the book. Some of the muppet monster faces are "shy face", "happy face", "silly face", "scary face", "grumpy face", "surprise face", "silly face", ending with "my face". What a great book!! I highly recommend it. Get ready to jump in and be silly!

Book Description

An inspiring message for all ages: Find your inner bird.

If you’re looking for wisdom and joy in your life, go straight to Sesame Street and heed the words of its most beloved and profound resident, Caroll Spinney, who has spent the past thirty-four years in a bird costume (and a trash can) as Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.

Three decades inside a giant puppet have taught Spinney a valuable and surprising lesson:

Being a bird can make you a better person.

In The Wisdom of Big Bird, the living legend of Sesame Street describes how we can all find our inner bird (or grouch).

Each chapter illustrates a piece of useful wisdom Spinney has gleaned from a career in feathers. The lessons Big Bird teaches children every day on Sesame Street are the same ones that have brought Spinney success and satisfaction in his own life.

Warm, witty, and affirming, Caroll Spinney’s memoir proves that being a bird can make you a better and happier person.

“Every day on Sesame Street, we strive to give our innocent young audience the basis of a lifelong education. It is no accident that spending the past thirty-four years in the Bird suit teaching these lessons to others has taught me a few things, too.”—from The Wisdom of Big Bird (and the Dark Genius of Oscar the Grouch)

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations
I half saw Mr. Spinney's interview on TV the other morning and was very intrigued with the idea of the book. Having grown up (and actually recently watched a few episodes of) Sesame Street, I decided to buy the book to read on a business trip. With a title like "The Wisdom of Big Bird," many things came to my mind. I was really expecting a somewhat light-hearted "7 Habits"-type book with excerpts from past Sesame episodes explaining the philosophical ideals. This was not the case - Little did I know that Spinney (with the help of J. Milligan) would expertly tell his life with an "inside-view" as the world's best-known educational Muppet. With his tasteful reminisces of the late Henson & Mr. Hooper, Spinney brought back the memories of an era and provided me with an adult illustration of a world of pure innocence. The book provides a beautiful look at the beloved Bird and his soul. Thank you Caroll for taking your dreams and making them every child's reality!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring little read...lighthearted and thoughtful.
I grew up on Sesame Street. I love the show and I really liked this book. It flowed smoothly from chapter to chapter. Carol really loves his job and it is evident from his writing.

People complained about the size of the book, and I admit, I wish it was longer, but that wouldn't turn me away from it.

If you enjoy learning about "behind the scenes" happenings...this book is for you.

Sure wish I could find a job on Sesame Street!!

ADDENDUM: Caroll Spinney recently gave a book lecture, which I attended with my daughter. He talked about the book, referencing many events he wrote about. See him in person, if you get the chance! He brought Oscar and Oscar is very funny on book tours!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book....
This book holds your attention and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. You would never know that Caroll Spinney's life is so EXCITING!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The View From Inside the Bird
The Wisdom of Big Bird is an easy-to-take book about how Sesame Street got started and how it is produced, all from the perspective of the man inside the bird. For instance, I learned that there are no eyeholes in the Big Bird suit, so Spinney has to use a mini-monitor to navigate. Spinney's story of how he met his wife (several times) was entertaining, and I loved the description of the Sesame Street trip to China, with an impromptu limo ride with Bob Hope.Even the drawings are well done, by Spinney himself. Recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars cute but misinformed
This book is certainly cute. However, it tells the readers that during at lightening storm you should put up your umbrella and huddle under it. This is a dangerous thing for children to see their Sesame Street heros doing because they think everything these heros do is ok. Hiding under an umbrella during a lighting storm puts your life in danger of being electricuted. I was very disappointed in this book. I read it at a Dr.'s office and I requested that they remove it from their book rack. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning...Not for Elmo fans!!!!!
I bought this book for my 20-month old daughter because she loves Sesame Street. Elmo is her favorite. She calls this her "Elmo Book." I assumed that since Elmo is ON THE COVER, he would be in it, but my assumption was wrong! Upon closer inspection, I realized that even though I thought I was purchasing a 2004 book, it originally came out in 1980 (pre-Elmo), and apparently, they just slapped a new cover on it with Elmo and Zoe (who do not appear anywhere in the book!) I was going to return it since I was disappointed with it, but my daughter still likes to look at all of the pictures and all of the other Sesame Street characters (from when I was growing up). I felt bad because the first night I showed it to her, and she saw the cover and screamed, "ELMO!" Then I sat down with her and said, "Where's Elmo?" and we flipped through the whole book to realize her "Elmo Book" doesn't contain Elmo! Other than that major complaint, I still like the book and its illustrations even though I think the cover photograph was a very poor choice, and by writing this review, I hope to save other parents from disappointing other true Elmo lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
My 2.5 years old son falls in love with this book. He reads it every night. Every night, he will take out this book from the shelf and asks me to tell what the sesame street muppet did in the pages. Once I stop, he will say : "Turn the page, Mum, No stop. Please read me this book!" If you don't ask him to stop reading, he will continue to read this book till late night. This book is really a unusal dictionary that the family with little child should have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry it's out of print!
This book is not just for toddlers. It is the only dictionary I have seen that puts standard sight words into meaning. Particulary children with learning disabilities have a very difficult time understand the concept of sight words. With a very playful, visual and active descriptive of the sight words, it brings life to the meaning of the words, and it eases in the retention of these words when reading. This book is excellent for children with reading disabilities - up until the 3rd or 4th grade.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to grow up with
This book is wonderful for children from ages 2 and up. My 2 year old is not yet ready to learn definitions, but the book is filled with colorful, easy to see pictures, in which he can identify his beloved Sesame Street characters, as well as the activities that they portray. This is one of the few books that he doesn't want to put down. So many pages makes it something new each and every time we pick it up. I cannot tell you the extent of the knowledge he has gained from this book. Several of his daycare teachers have told me how amazing he is in what he knows and comprehends for a child his age. His knowledge and perception of things took off immediately following our Sesame Street Dictionary reading sessions. This is a book that will continue to give as he grows older and begins learning the concepts and definitions of these words, not to mention when he begins reading and writing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book to nurture a reading hobby for a child
I've been reading this book to my 2 1/2 yrs old daughter as her bedtime story since she was 18th months old. Now, she requested me to read this book for her everynight without failed. I find that this is a very good book to make her interested in reading. ... Read more
