1-0 out of 5 stars What a shame
There's a lot of good stuff in this book -- what a shame that it is so totally inappropriate for a teenage boy. For example, there's a bold-face section titled "Masturbating with Friends." Here we're told that "Some guys masturbate in groups; others wouldn't even consider it."

There's another section that starts with a factual explanation about what it means for a person to be straight, gay, lesbian, or bi. The facts are well presented, but then we get the editorial comment that "all are natural ways of being" and that homosexuality, in particular, "is a natural expression of human sexuality" and a "normal variation of human sexuality."

By contrast, the author does not like the "objectification" of women in a Playboy or Penthouse magazine. There she advises boys to stay away and asks: "Why have a bunch of potenitally weird sexual images floating around in your head?" Funny, that was my response to her section on group masturbation.

I had high hopes for this book, but I'm sending it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars A LIFESAVER FOR SINGLE MOMS
This book is a life saver for single moms. I have two boys and many of the questions they have asked are in this book. Until I read this book, I didn't understand that walking around with an erection most of the time was normal. The "Guy Book" has also taught me about the changes that have occurred and about the changes that are still to come. Thanks to the "Guy Book" I don't think I'll get caught off guard with some questions and changes my boys are yet to experience. I appreciate that the author thought about including girls and some of their changes. A must read for any single female parent and a great book for boys experiencing puberty.

With humour and sensitivity, Boys, Girls and Body Science provides no-nonsense answers for children - and parents - with questions about sex. Specifically designed for young readers, Boys, Girls and Body Science walks children through the wonders of their bodies in a direct, easy-to-read manner. The story begins with Nicholas, 7, and Jenny, 5, learning about different types of science in their class-from ecology to the digestive system. Then Meg Hickling, a guest speaker, comes to talk to them about a new type of science. Hickling talks about the "science names" for the children's body parts, about good and bad touches and about making babies. She coaches the children not to be embarrassed or shy about body science: "We are going to make this just like a science lesson, we will learn to think like a scientist and we will learn the scientific names for our private parts," she says.Hickling is a Registered Nurse who has been teaching sexual education for over 25 years. She is an outstanding educator, and her ability to convey difficult material with sensitivity, gentle humour and warmth distinguishes her as a remarkable teacher and role model. 4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
i remember being a pre-teen, leafing through many books written for young women that followed an "our bodies ourselves" format. these books were ok, but never what i was really looking for. i didn't want information on how to ask boys to dance or how to apply lipstick- i wondered where the chapters entitled "when you don't feel like the rest or the girls" or "but what if i don't like boys?" were.

what a great help it would have been to have this book! the format is "hip" but not patronizing. while this book affirms the importance of pride and self-respect in queer or questioning young people, it also devotes pages to the concerns and dangers many queer teens face (safe sex, how to begin dating, facing intolerance). transgender issues and stories have their own chapter, as do homophobia and coming out. descriptive paragraphs are broken up by small autobiographical blurbs by young people describing their experiences with the topic at hand, and by smaller essays.

this book is a great place to begin for youth who are GLBTQ, questioning, or who would like to better understand their queer peers and friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True Love Waits
I give "True Love Waits" presentations around the country and SexSmart, by Susan Browning Pogany is the sole book I recommend to all teenagers and parents. It is the most accurate and readable abstinence resource I have ever encountered. IF I WERE MADE OF MONEY, THIS BOOK WOULD BE IN THE HANDS OF EVERY TEENAGER IN AMERICA!! Please get it for those you love.

Thank you, Susan!

1-0 out of 5 stars disturbing propaganda
I can't honestly offer a fair review of this book, since I've only carefully read the parts that Amazon.com makes available: back cover, full table of contents, short 6-page excerpt from the beginning of the book, other people's reviews. I've read enough, however, to get the message: the author claims that teen sex is utterly dangerous and unfulfilling, and always leads to unwanted pregnancy, STDs, broken relationships, personal insecurity, etc. She implies that teenagers only have sex out of peer pressure, or a desire to be loved, or some foolish immature notion of what "love" is. She never considers the possibility that teenage sex might be tender, satisfying, safely managed, thoughtfully initiated within a deeply intimate and monogamous relationship, and in the end, not such a big deal to begin with. I'm guessing she also doesn't provide any advice on how to have sex in the safest and best way possible if one has indeed decided to become sexually active (as many, many other books directed towards teenagers do). As a result I find Pogany's book unfounded, annoying, destructive, and propagandistic. It's a completely one-sided view of things, written to put forth pseudo-scientific arguments against some socially undesirable behavior. Her "sound bite" approach (in which she doesn't write continuous prose, but instead provides short, separate little paragraphs on various reasons not to have sex) is not very persuasive, because it treats her pronouncements superficially and leaves them unsupported. I think this book is a good example of how abstinence programming merely serves to scare teenagers: sex is bad, sex is unhealthy, sex leaves you downhearted and regretful, sex should be saved for committed marriages and partnerships. Pity the adults in America who promote this culture don't also live by it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I thought I'd have to write myself
Susan Browning Pogany has written a book I really thought about writing myself. As the mother of a 13 year old daughter, I've stayed up late into the night thinking of all the things I will need to tell my daughter, and should probably write out. How boys think of sex differently than girls. How teens are being manipulated by the media through a bombardment of sexual images via magazines, movies, television, the internet and music - for no other reason than to draw them in as consumers. How teens can fall prey to peer pressure when they loose track of what is important to them. These are only a few of the points Susan Browning Pogany offers for teens to consider in "SexSmart".

Too many parents I've spoken to about teen sex have the "Hey, they're going to have sex anyway. What are you gonna do?" attitude, then proceed to rent motel rooms for their kids' proms and stock their medicine cabinets with condoms. They seem to feel it is the easier route to take. I believe in giving my child ALL of the facts, as are in "SexSmart".

I only wish I could have read this book when I was a teenager. I wouldn't have been nearly as confused, nor bought into all of the mixed messages. I would love to see this book in high school sex-ed courses. Too often the kids are given the physiological facts, without the emotional information and downfalls of sex too soon, which are addressed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex Smart
The book I read was interseting. Sex Smart by Susan Browning Pogany wrote one of the most informing books for teens Ihave ever read. The book specifies about the relation of sex and how to exclude it until a mature age. You can read about teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, date rape, condom use, etc. I highly recommend this book for teens who are curious about sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas teen: I LOVED THIS BOOK!
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I am a 17 yr. old girl. Even though I am not a virgin anymore this book made me realize that I am taking some pretty big risks when having sex and therefore I have made my New Year's resolution to abstain until I am older and have a stable life. I made a mistake and I rushed into sex thinking I was missing out or it was gonna be something beautiful when in fact it wasn't. I really appreciated this book. I don't think I could have found anything to have made me change my mind about the way I was doing sleeping around, but this book inspired me to see that there is nothing wrong with abstaining and with having self-respect and waiting on sex. That's how I see it now. At first I was like it's all BS but then as I kept reading more, I saw that the book was right and I realized that the only reason I had sex was because I felt pressured. Now I know that it doesn't matter what they think or what a guy wants. It's about what hurts me and what doesn't. Hey, if all the other ones are doing it, then let them go for it but I will just stick to my education from now on.

At first I was afraid of people at my school seeing me read this book so I would hide it. Then I decided I would show it to my friends so that they would think about the way they are living their lives and having sex at such a young age. It is funny, too, because I checked this book out at my school library and my friends thought I had probably gotten it somewhere else. When they saw the school stamp, they were surprised. I really appreciate that the author wrote this book. It has made a difference in my life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Answers children's questions
Joanna Cole (I Am a Big Brother, I Am a Big Sister) has created yet another great book for sharing with young children. Directly addressing toddlers and preschool age children, Cole tells about pregnancy and childbirth. Using terms such as uterus, umbilical cord, and breast, and with illustrations of a child inside the womb, Cole and Chambliss have created a wonderful book for parents to share with very, young children, especially when a new baby is expected. Additional information on answering children's questions about birth is provided at the back of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The wonder of nature
This book should appeal to many age levels. My 18 month old begs for it over and over again. The illustrations are beautiful- soft and detailed with the animals filling up the whole page. The text is one or two sentences per page and he knows the names of the animals. For the older child the facts about each animal provide an introduction to the fascinating diversity of the natural world and a reference point leading to a discussion of his or her own birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book!
I read this beautifully illustrated book to my four-year-old son many times throughout my pregancy. The fact that he was born himself, just like the animals, pleased him immensely. I enjoyed reading it over and over because of the simple, charming words the author uses to describe birth. The whale mother nudges the baby whale up for its "first sip of air." The baby elephant wears "a halo of long, brown hair." And the human baby "rode curled beneath (its) mother's heart." What a wonderful, sweet way to explain the miracle of life to young children. It is also a great way to explain the different ways some animals are born. Daddy Seahorses give birth? Frogs have babies that don't look like them? It could lead to yet another trip to the library!

My son's baby sister is more than six months old, yet he still counts this book as one of his favorites. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the author has an almost magical way of describing birth.
With brief, but magical descriptions of the moments of birth for several animals, the author carries you into the special realization of the unique and magical love in human birth. The artist's fantastic pictures bring you into the world of each animal. A beautiful, and gentle introduction into the world of reproduction, without fear or discomfort. Complete innocence left unmarked, but with inspired appreciation for a true miracle. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feast of "Food for Thought"
This book is part of a series by Jeanne Warren Lindsay. The other books in the series are: "Your Pregnancy and Newborn Journey: A Guide for Pregnant Teens"; "Nurturing Your Newborn: Young Parents' Guide to Baby's First Month"; "Your Baby's First Year: A Guide for Teenage Parents"; "The Challenge of Toddlers: Parenting Your Child from One to Three"; and "Discipline from Birth to Three: How Teen Parents Can Prevent and Deal with Discipline Problems with Babies and Toddlers".

Lindsay has worked with teens for many years, and writes out of her experiences using simple language and short sentences for a book that is approachable even by those without great reading skills. This book contains quotes from more than 52 teen-aged fathers, who share their thoughts and feelings on the topics covered.

Information presented covers the areas of: establishing paternity; having a relationship with your child even if the mom and dad aren't together anymore; how the mom feels during pregnancy; schooling options; adoption rights; the mom's health during pregnancy; the baby's development in the womb; the labor and delivery of the baby; caring for the needs of a newborn infant including feeding holding, and diapering; taking care of a baby that can crawl; nutrition for babies and toddlers; health and safety issues for babies; the development and behaviors of one-year-olds and two-year-olds; disciplining your child; gang involvement; living arrangements; marriage; planning another baby; and planning for the future.

There is an annotated bibliography of further resources, and an index of the covered topics for quick reference.

This book provides a gentle, broad introduction for teen dads but is missing one major component: religion. Many (not all, but many) teen parents will want to participate in the religious ceremonies surrounding the birth of a child. Lindsay does not mention religion in any way. Thus she leaves out a major talking point and planning point that many teens do care about. She also fails to remind teens that they might want to consult with their religious leader when talking about contraceptives in their sexual relationship. She also does teens a disservice by claiming that condoms will prevent AIDS...there are several studies showing that this is a dangerous assumption. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the uptight or inhibited
This is a WONDERFUL book if you care about raising children that understand their bodies and aren't afraid of sexuality. I buy it for all of my friends who have young children. It doesn't explain where babies come from, except to say that sex can lead to babies if you want it to. It celebrates the body; the entire body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled.
This is a book about sex. That much should be quite obvious from the title, but some people think "sex" + "kids" = "manufacture of babies", which is wrong on its face. Furthermore, this is the only children's book I've seen that gives a reasonable explaination of what sexual behavior is and how it happens. If you're ready to deal with your young child's questions and this book now, you'll save yourself a lot of trouble with your preteen down the road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only book of its kind: yes, kids are sexual too.
Probably most parents will find this book to be "too much about sex" for their children - although nothing in the book is inappropriate. This is the only book I reviewed that mentioned nothing about pregnancy (there is a brief mention of fertilization). Instead, it's all about being familiar with your body (there are several drawing exercises, and a workbook is available to purchase separately), good kinds of touching, masturbation, and in general helping the child to decide for him or herself what "sexy" means. There's also some brief discussion about partnerships (heterosexual or homosexual). The drawings are simple lines, and there's very little clinical language. This is a great book for open-minded, sex-positive families to share.

2-0 out of 5 stars A book about sex, not how babies are made
If you are looking for a book strictly about sex, this will fill the bill. It does not talk about conception. Topics covered include, nudity, being alone, private parts, etc. This book is not designed to be "fun" (my major complaint). The illustrations are simple line drawings and the layout is designed for a child who doesn't need pictures or a story to entertain or interest them.

1-0 out of 5 stars an inappropriately permissive text for young ones
This is an "anything goes" book for youngsters. It asks kids if and how they self stimulate but has a strangely coy attitude to nudity. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Some concerns
I am not Christian but was having difficulty finding a book on puberty for my 10 year old son that advocated abstinence and did not say that homosexuality is acceptable. Although I was concerned about the word "Fearfully" in the title, as I did not want fear associated with puberty, I purchased the book anyway. Warning-the drawings in the book are quite detailed. Most of the book was fine. I expected the references to Satan-the usual fear, shame and guilt stuff-I marked those out. My biggest concern was with a section that described oral and anal sex and basically said it was alright as long as you were married. Aren't oral and anal sex sodomy and against Christian teaching? Strangely of all the books I readthis is the only Christian one and the only one that mentioned anal and oral sex. I marked out about 3 paragraphs total in this book before letting my son read it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Ruth fans will love it, others may be put off
There's really nothing new in the information Dr. Ruth offers in this book; it can be found in several other well-written books for the same audience. As always with Dr. Ruth, however, her answers are accurate, well-written, and as scientifically/psychologically up-to-date as you could ask for.

What she does add is her characteristic "hip grandma with a Ph.D." personality. I happen to like it, and I think a lot of kids are more willing to listen to someone a generation removed from them than they are someone their parents' age. Others, though, find her openness and up-front delivery uncomfortable or inappropriate. If that's you, don't buy this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Sharing experiences and insights that will help other teens face the realities of impending parenthood, pregnant and parenting teens offer young expectant mothers advice for carrying and delivering a healthy baby. Medical concerns such as fetal development, nutrition, and risks related to smoking, alcohol, and drugs are discussed, and labor and delivery are described in detail-often through the words of teenagers who have already delivered. Focusing on the needs of the young mother and those of her partner, this guide also stresses the importance of staying in school, graduating, and gaining job skills. Including numerous quotes from teenage fathers, but sensitive to the fact that many pregnant teens do not have a positive relationship with their baby's father, this book provides knowledge that will improve a young mother's chances of having a satisfying experience with or without a partner's assistance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very illustrative book- highly recommended
I read this book twice thoroughly before writing this review. The book is very complete and discusses the most common myths and realities about "el sexo joven" and many enigmas as well. The book is not only for adolescents, it's definitely beneficial to adults as well who have teenagers or have questions themselves that they would like to have answered without having to go to a gynecologist or urologist depending on the nature of the problem. The book is divided into the following four chapters:

1) Sentidos y sin sentidos del sexo joven
2) Preocupaciones puntales
3) El sexo mal entendido
4) Cultura sexual de ultima hora

Dra. Anbel Ochoa covers all grounds related to the myths of sexuality, cultural taboos and today's societal concerns as they relate to sexuality, sexuality transmitted diseases, contraceptives, pregnancy and the list is endless. Once again the thoroughness is what makes this book so enlightening as it covers many aspects of this diverse and in some cases controversial topic due to cultural differences. It is easy to read and all correct terminology is used which is important especially for adolescents who definitely need to understand the importance of their own sexual development and corporal changes from the beginning. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for clarification and understanding of sexual culture. The editorial review on the product page is also very thorough and gives insight to the topics covered in the book.

I read the Spanish version, I am unsure if there is a version in English. ... Read more

Book Description

Sex remains one of the least comfortable — and thus least discussed — topics between parents and children. Even the most enlightened parent can get queasy at the prospect of "the talk," despite its importance in helping youngsters become well-informed teens and responsible adults. Let's Talk About S-E-X is a short, illustrated book that parent and child can sit down and read together. First created by Planned Parenthood in the 1980s, and taking a simple, factual approach to the subject, the book makes that crucial conversation possible and even enjoyable by encouraging open dialogue; offering clear, correct information; and giving strategies for age-appropriate discussions that neither judge nor frighten. The book discusses feelings, what's normal, how and why the body changes, making sense of love and sex, STDs, and much more. The simple language and illustrations invite young readers to revisit the information if they have not absorbed it all in one sitting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book taught me
I read this book just before turing twelve over a decade ago. If you are a religious person and want to raise your children with good Christian valuse, this book is excelent. I am grateful that my parents used it to teach me about sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Parents
I found this book to be a great parental tool. It is age appropriate sex education from a Christian perspective. It was an excellent resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars For Christians Only
I didn't realize when I bought this book that it was so oriented toward a strict religious view of sex. I believe it is detrimental to children developing today to have so many "forbiddens" and to teach them that sexual orientations different from the norm are wrong. This book tries to take the parent's place and teach morals directly to the child. If you buy the book, make sure to read it before giving it to your child to read, you may find out your child is learning exactly the opposite of what you want him or her to know.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointing book
Spend your money on a well-balanced, well-written book -- such as those currently available by Dr. Chrystal DeFreitas or Debra Haffner.

If I could've awarded no stars I would've.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is an affront to ANY parent or pre-teen!
Although the material is cloaked in conservative Christian words, only the most narrow-minded Christian could agree with the author's outlandish "commandments" disguised as "God's Word". As a Christian, I was very offended for the author to claim to be THE intrepeter of God's word.

The information presented is very minimalistic, concerning itself only with the basic conception and birth process. The author's only attempts to address children's questions about sexual feelings, masturbation, homosexuality, etc. is a simplistic "I (the author, speaking for God) say it is a sin."

The author, quite forcefully, attempts to replace parental responsibility of instilling morality in children, with preaching his own views, evangilizing that to not follow his views is sinful and punishable by eternal damnation. He even goes so far as to mock the Supreme Court of the United States!

Highly recommended to avoid! ... Read more

Finally a book that includes many of the ways that children are conceived and families are formed. In this book the "facts of life" are given in a gentle and complete manner. 5-0 out of 5 stars should be curricular material!
My children are adopted, and they feel so completely disjointed when sex ed comes up in school. This book covers not only sexual intercourse but also in-vitro fertilization, which is so often overlooked. This book also covers ADOPTION, thank goodness. It is written from the perspective of, how do families come into being? It addresses each way this can happen. It is neither condescending nor promoting nontraditional means - it just acknowledges that there ARE nontraditional means. I was so very happy to come across this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information
This book is great for including the many different ways families come together. Adoption, step-parents, single parents and other types of families are included. This book is very inclusive and leaves room for all situations.

It is full of facts for helping to explain how babies are made to our children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I think this book is appropriate for children ages 4-8 and maybe even older, depending on their maturity (or lack thereof). If you are generally open and honest with your children and usually explain things to them in a no nonsense, matter of fact way -- this book will assist you with the "tough" questions. It VERY briefly covers the whole "sex" thing -- but explains it in simple terms that children will accept easily -- without shock or embarassment. The pictures are NOT too graphic, in my opinion. Great book! Very useful and really very sweet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for toddlers
The comment states that this book is for 4 to 8 year old children. This book is not appropriate for toddlers. I would even hesitate to show this book to an eight year old child. I think that for child that is 10 or older, it would be appropriate. The material (reading and pictures) is much to graphic for a four year old child. ... Read more
