5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, and I thought "Don't Need Friends" was great!
You haven't lived until you've read this book! The characters are absolutely charming and the story line teaches children of all ages the importance of enjoying life to the fullest. Nice illustrations, too, but the best part is the writing...so clever!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
My daughter's brought this home from the library--my oldest picked it out because her sisters name is Tessa. Much to my suprise this little mouse is alot like my Tessa. It's a wonderful children's story with wonderfully colored pictures. We've only had it one night and have already read it 3 times! This is definately one to add to your bookshelf!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book I have read in my whole life!
I loved this book. The pictures are hilarious! My children ask me every night to read this book to them over and over. You would think I would be tired of reading it, but I am not. There are so many funny things to look at in the pictures, that it keeps the interest of not only my children, but myself as well. If you want to buy a funny book, this is the one! ... Read more

Book Description

Rhyme follows rhyme as layer after layer of winter clothing ("bunchy and hot, wrinkled a lot, stiff in the knee, and too big for me!") is first put on and then taken off to the relief of the child bundled inside. Clever rebuses and jaunty illustrations make The Jacket I Wear in the Snow especially fun for prereaders and new readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Kids in the Snow
Shirley Neitzel wrote a book called The Jacket I Wear In The Snow. The main character of the story is a little boy who tells a story. This story takes place at the little boy's house and it is in the winter. The book talks about the little boy and all the clothes that he has to wear outside. This book is different because it talks about clothes and replaces words with pictures of clothes, and it is in poem form. I think that the story is funny because it rhymes a lot. The illustrations are just like normal clothes, with a very nice tint drawn in with colored pencils. Overall, I really liked this story because it represents little kids and how they have to wear a lot of clothes outside, and that they cry sometimes when they get cold.

4-0 out of 5 stars book fan from oklahoma
This book is excellent for children. Through all of the articles of clothing that he puts on, they can begin to count, a good math lesson. They can also participate while you read the story aloud through the pictures of the clothes instead of the word. I loved this book and am adding it to my collection. ... Read more

Book Description

This collection, written by 12 noted young authors, examines all of the war's implications for young people - from those caught in the line of fire to the children of the veterans of wars long past.

As bullets ring and bombs are dropped, children watch - mostly from the sidelines, but occasionally in the direct line of fire.Unaware of the political issues or power struggles behind the battle, all they know are the human, emotional consequences of this thing called war.

Critically acclaimed author Jennifer Armstrong brings together 12 powerful voices in young people's literature to explore the realities of war from a child's perspective. The settings vary widely - the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, an attempted coup in Venezuela, the American Civil War, crisis in the Middle East - but the effects are largely the same.In war, no life is ever left untouched. In war, lives are shattered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diverse, Compassionate and Important Look at Children & War

by Dianna Hunter English, age 20

"The juxtaposition of youth and war haunts me. They say war isn't an appropriate subject for young people, and you know what? I agree. But war doesn't care. That's why I decided to put this book together." -Jennifer Armstrong

Shattered is a thoughtful and moving look at an all too timely topic: war. Editor Jennifer Armstrong has compiled a wide variety of short stories about the wartime experiences of children. A young Palestinian daughter flees to Jordan with her family during the Six-Day War in 1967. A young girl nicknamed Jacket helps hide her best friend's older brother when he is a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. Lewis Bowman, a young Mohawk, fights with the Union army during the American Civil War. Zack struggles with his American background during a 1992 "golpe de estado" in Latin America. A family of children faces the devastating effects of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Two children struggle to find safety in Israel after surviving Auschwitz.

This book treats children's experiences with respect. Many of the authors speak from their own memories, and those authors writing fiction capture the intensity, the vulnerability, and the strength of childhood. I have to admit that at first the titled worried me. It is very easy to reduce children to their worst experiences and to neglect other aspects of their human identities so that their suffering is easier for others to process. However, this book's articulation of the perspective of children is honest, and for the most part it succeeds in being authentic. It is moving and, as it should be, troubling.

Given the reality of conflict that we currently face, it is vital to remember the devastation of war, and the destruction of life that is left in its wake. Children are not safeguarded from that violence. Armstrong has succeeded in creating a diverse, compassionate, and important look at children and war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shattered Review
Right now, war is one of the biggest issues in the U.S. It's preety much the only thing we hear about the news. However, whether or not we realize this, we are not the only ones that are affected by war. Millions of children have been killed during wars, or have suffered either from injuries or loss of family, and are now orphans. Jennifer Armstrong talks about these issues and also gives examples of such events occuring in many of the different wars that have occured. In some instances chidren hate the war, and in some they like it. Examine the different outcomes and ways that war has effected children's lived in "Shattered:Storied of children and war."

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, important, recommended for young readers.
Short stories by M.E. Kerr, Gloria Miklowitz, Marilyn Singer and others center around the theme of children and war, delivering powerful messages of how war affects families, friends, and childhood. From an Afghan girl whose home is slowly destroyed by the Soviets to the children of a Vietnam vet, this covers a wide range of cultural experiences and scenarios of war. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars almost as good as the first Monster!
This is an interactive book....the kids hearing it read to them will help you decide whether to listen to Grover and stop turning the pages, or go on with Elmo...it's just what the pre-schooler loves, and I enjoy it as well!!! The first one was only with Grover, and I gotta admit, even better. Buy both!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loveable, Furry
I had always enjoyed Monster and when I got married and became a stepmom, I ran out and bought the book. My stepson couldn't read yet, but he new exactly when to yell, "You turned the page!". Then when Another Monster came out...you better believe we got it as well. I now have a 6 month old son and pretty soon he will be meeting up with the Monster! I highly recommend this book to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original, but my nephew loves it!
I was a bit disappointed when I first read this book to myself because I thought that it wasn't nearly as good as the original, but I was pleasantly surprised that my 28 month old nephew loves this book because it stars his favorite Sesame Street character, Elmo! He is also in this phase in which he loves monsters, so can you blame him for loving it? It apparently was not a waste of money like I thought it would be. He always requests "Another marmar book!" (Translation: Another monster book!) Basically the book is about Grover not wanting to get to end of the book because there is supposed to be a monster there, but Elmo tries to convince him throughout the book to go see the monster at the end of the book. Like in the first book, Grover does everything he can to get you to stop turning the pages, but Elmo eggs you on to turn the pages! Grover finally agrees to see the monster at the end of the book, and he is pleasantly surprised to find that HE and Elmo are the monsters at the end of the book! It is written with quotation bubbles above the heads of the characters, so that is a little different from the original text writing. Highly recommended to toddlers!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original
First let me say that I was disappointed when this book arrived because it's a small cardbood book. When I read "hardcover", I was thinking it would be the same style and size as the original Monster at the End of This Book. I also thought that since my 2 year old loved the original one, this would be a shoo-in as a new favorite. Boy was I wrong! I've read this book to her exactly 3 times and that was because I was the one to choose her bedtime book. She definitely prefers the first one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book passed down from generation to generation
I remember reading this book as a child, and I loved every page! It's creative and well put together. Every page is a new surprise! Everyone in the family can enjoy this book. Now that I have children, I can now pass the tradition of loving this book on for many more generations to come. This is a book that provides many smiles and laughs to children of all ages. You'll love it, and your children will love it, and their children will love it and so on and so on..... ... Read more

a refreshing back to the basics book that makes kids laugh and gives parents a good grin. Fleischman and Blake are a great combo as they bring out the hidden world of rural backwaters and corny jokes. my kids are all ears and big eyes as I read, and they love to hear the tall tales get taller. we've never regretted buying this ageless classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for car rides and waiting rooms.
I recommend this book to parents of toddlers everywhere. My son loves for us to read to him, but he has a short attention span. The pictures are bright and colorful, and the stories are fairly short and are about Disney characters that he can easily identify. So, even though he cannot read he loves to look at the pictures. You can read it over and over without getting too bored and since it is one book, you don't have a lot of books to carry around. 5-0 out of 5 stars Parents! Don't fight with your children for this book!
For those who have not yet grow up with Roald Dahl books as bedtime stories, the Treasury is good news indeed. For those who grew up with Roald Dahl books but lost them, the Treasury is fabulous news!! For the first time, Roald Dahl's fans can enjoy the adventures of their favorite hero and heroines in one whole volume. The wondrous chocolate factory, Matilda's extraordinary power, and many more charismatic characters in Roald Dahl's mystical kingdom. (Yes, even the wicked witches and awful giants have their places) The poems are a definitely a delightful read, and letters give the readers an insight to Roald Dahl's brilliant and imaginative mind. A pen under Roald Dahl's fingers becomes a magic wand that creates so many colorful dreams for both the young and old. The delicate illustrations by Quentin Blake and other outstanding illustrators add delicious flavor to the already luscious stories. The only small drawback is that the treasury is a collection of excerpts from various stories, but at the same time, it may also become a merit. I don't have to flip through a whole book for my favorite passages in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful assortment of Dahl's childrens work
This is a beautiful book full of colorful illustrations, which is always a major plus, most of which are by Quentin Blake. This has some of Roald Dahl's poetry (such as his hilarious fairy tale retellings), short stories, excerpts from his children's novels, recipes, letters from fans, and other nice little tidbits, like a sheet Dahl filled out about his birthday, favorite color, food, etc. I think this book is well worth the money, because I got this a few years ago and haven't grown out of it since!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb, fantastic, and wonderful book
This book, like all other books of Rohld Dahl, is detailed, humorous, and just plain good. I spent 9 hours just sitting in a chair, reading this book, defanatly another fanatic book of Rolhd Dahl. I loved it. WOW!

3-0 out of 5 stars What I liked and didn't like about the Dahl Treasury
I am nine and a half years old. I liked the variety of stories and poems, but I was frustrated at first because I thought I would be reading entire stories. Instead, I found that the Treasury included only chapters of some stories. Short stories, like the Enormous Crocodile, were entirely included.

This book left me searching for the complete works of Roald Dahl.

5-0 out of 5 stars an awesome book
The Roal Dahl Treasury is really great because aside from the extracts, it includes poems, letters, and true stories from Roald's past. An excellent book for all ages. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Starts out great, gets choppy. Dissapointing for Cormier
I read this book because it's by Robert Cormier--who generally writes great, psychological novels for young adults. I've read three other of his books, "I am the Cheese", "The Chocolate War", and one other book of his that deals with a hijacked school bus and hostage situation. I enoyed all three of these novels when I was in middle and high school. So I was dissapointed when I read 'Fade'. Being a young _adult_ now, I still found the story to be very cynical and morbid. I liken it to a hokey Stephen King story but not as hackneyed and a bit better done. The story started out okay, and got progressively worse. I guess if your tastes run to the more 'hardened and mature' and dark this book is for you. However, even the story line had a few snags. For a while the story just putters around with a lot of description of a very small, quiet town and the lonely main protaganist. Then it gets choppy with an abrupt change of narration, which I found to be annoying. I'm not sure how this story is supposed to be for young adults (15-17 year age range, right?). If you are a parent or adult relative looking for a book for a teen, do not buy this. There are many better novels, and many other novels that deal with sex, obsession, and murder in a more insightful and meaningful way than this. The ending of the story was cliche and predictable to say the least. The only reason I'm not giving this just one star is because it has a few redeeming qualities. I read the entire thing, so it must not be boring. Even though the atmosphere is decidely 'down' if not downright depressing, I can understand why other reviewers called this novel 'sensitive'. It doesn't glorify violence or sex and does deal with desire and in a larger sense with humanity and what makes us human (or inhuman) I would not recommend this book to anyone. If you buy a Cormier book, try 'The Chocolate War' instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Every family has its mysteries."
Fade by Robert Cormier is a great book.

Fade is a book with many different settings and point of views. It begins with Paul who is around the age of 13 when he finds out he has a gift. He is able to become invisible. Then there is Ozzie, Paul's nephew. Who is angry at the world because of his terrible life. After him there is Susan, Paul's distant cousin who finds a manuscript written by Paul about his life and the ways he dealt with "the fade."

Reading the synopsis of this book I thought it would be a good book to read because I've always thought it would be cool if I could become invisible. I know, silly, but I thought about it before. Of course when I thought about things like that I didn't think about the negative aspects and ways that I would most likely abuse the power, but this book reveals all the possibilities if "the fade" were real. I am not surprised that this was such a good book, since Robert Cormier writes amazing books. This book also dealt with a lot of other issues and it was just an all around great book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fade in our hearts
This book is great! It totally reveals the different aspects people view on certain subjects. We, in our daily lives, would sometimes wonder if we acquired such and such supernatural powers, and what we would do with such and such powers. The truth is, when we actually get these powers, the vicious minds of ours would emerge and the world would fall into chaos. The book Fade pointed this out clearly. Susan and her grandfather's views on the power of fading are also reflected in this world. To believe or not believe, I think every character each of us would interfere this issue. Just like Susan's grandfather, being a detective had surely shaped him into a more logical person. This book Fade stated many situations and thoughts encountered either spiritually physically in our lives and personally I think it¡¦s a must for every readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great chiller
Although this is the only Robert Cormier book I've read that contains a "fantasy" element, I loved the way he still kept the emphasis on the psycological aspects of the fade. Paul is growing up in 1930's Massachusetts when he first discovers his power to become invisible. While most young adult books would here dwell into tedious fantasy, Cormier focuses on feelings felt within the fade, feelings of isolation and depression that many ignored teen-agers can relate to. Only here, they're multiplied by 100. As the fade is passed from generation to generation, Cormier explores how the fade doesn't create but rather intensifies feelings of guilt and forsakeness in young people. Like almost all of Cormier's writing, this is a dark tale. I was throughly chilled and disturbed from the beginning.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you have the book, toss it NOW!
This book is awful. Twice in it he describes sneaking into other peoples bedrooms to fulfill his own desires and finds something worse. If you are getting this book for someone younger than high school, think twice!!! ... Read more

Twenty-four years after reading this book, its spirit still remains in me. I first read Tales of a Chinese Grandmother while in the third grade. Although I was raised in a traditional Chinese household, this book explained, with charm, the traditions and origins Chinese folklore.

This is not a college compendeum of every tradition, rather it is an endearing look at Chinese culture as explained by a grandmother to two young children as they grow up in old China.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for 10 year olds
I like the way the stories are broken up into 10-15 minute reads. This is perfect for bedtime reading, unfortunately, when I read this to my 5 year old son, I have to say that I've felt the need to skip over some parts of the stories due to their graphic nature. I imagine a 10 year old is more ready for dead rats but why change the plot so far away from the intentions of the classical writer? ... Read more

Book Description

Curious George and Friends: Favorite Stories by Margret and H. A. Rey features eight classic stories by the creators of Curious George. The book opens with an introduction called "Memories of the Reys" by Margaret Bloy Graham, the illustrator of the popular Harry the Dirty Dog and other books about Harry. Graham was a long-time friend and neighbor of Hans and Margret Rey. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together. The character for whom the author-illustrator team became best known, Curious George, arrived as one of many monkey children in Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys, Hans"s first book for children. Encouraged by their publisher and children throughout the world, the Reys continued with more books about Curious George. In the meantime, the Reys published a number of books showcasing their creative talents and their rare, immediate connection with childhood. These books feature characters, all with their own personalities, and a few with resemblances to George. Whether they come to you as new friends or old, they are sure to entertain children"s book lovers everywhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good version of Journey to the West for kids
My kids are a bit familiar with this story already, because we live in Hong Kong and have seen parts of the series on TV and because they've also read parts of it extremely abdridged in Chinese "comic book" form.

They (aged 7 and 5) loved this book. It is written in clear English, that nonetheless gives a feel for the names amd action of the characters. It is abridged enough so the kids don't get bored, but is complete enough to be faithful to the full-length novel. We just finished reading it aloud 5 days ago and the kids REALLY wanted to know what happens next.

Unfortunetely, the second installment of the story is not yet published. So, my family is now waiting impatiently for the next bit.

The only thing that could be better were the illustrations. They were small and in black and white. While I know that making the book larger and with color illustrations would have made it more expensive, I would have been willing to pay for it.

Excellent book. ... Read more

Book Description

The Boy of Chancellorville and OtherCivil War Stories is an unforgettable collection of stories for and about children during the Civil War, with contributions from American luminaries such as Louisa May Alcott, Ambrose Bierce, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Walt Whitman. The book reveals that the war affected the lives of children differently than their mothers and fathers: some looked at it as a grand adventure and for others it was a puzzling, premature end to childhood. James Marten includes accounts from nearly every viewpoint-boys and girls, Northerners and Southerners, blacks and whites-and various situations, ranging from life on the home front to confronting enemy soldiers to the aftermath of the war. Each story begins with a short introduction to place it in its literary context and explains the author's connection to the war. ... Read more

Book Description

Take cover! The mad, mad, Mad Scientists' Club of Mammoth Falls is back in action.

Since the publication of the Bertand Brinley's first book, THE MAD SCIENTISTS' CLUB, strange things have been happening. Mad Scientists' clubs have sprouted up, kids and grownups alike have been eagerly reading these incredible adventures, and the persistent, popular demand has been for more adventures!

So our seven young scientists, complete with clubhouse, electronic gear and wild, weird schemes are back again with flying saucers, electronic crime detection, seismographs, rockets, weather control, submarines (for real!) and well, you won't believe it until you read it.

Too bad the good and stalwart citizens of Mammoth Falls, university professors, the Air Force and even the Pentagon are sometimes unappreciative of our heroic, creative little group. But then, they were never real scientific geniuses like us, either. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
I have been a huge fan of the original "Mad Scientist's Club" since I was a kid. I continued to re-read it as I grew up and read it to my children. Needless to say, when I found out that another Mad Scientist's book was coming out, I could hardly wait to get my hands on it. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. None - and I mean none - of the stories reached the level of any in the original. As an example, The Flying Sorcerer was nothing more than The Strange Sea Monster of Strawberry Lake "gone airborne" or The Unidentified Flying Man of Mammoth Falls "light". My advise is to stick with the original, save your money and skip this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars They're back!
The Mad Scientists' Club is back and better than ever. A mini-sub, a gang of bank robbers and a home-made UFO are just some of the adventures you will find between the covers of this book. While there are only five stories this time, when compared to the seven tales in the first book, this book is over 216 pages (vs. the 188 pages of the first book) making each story within the second book both greater in length and in details.
For boys and men of all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars A hullaballoo over alleged flying saucers
Black-and-white illustrations by Charles Greer enhance the entertainment value of The New Adventures Of The Mad Scientists' Club, an engaging read for young readers ages 10 to 16 by Bertrand R. Brinley. The New Adventures Of The Mad Scientists' Club is comprised of five madcap adventures of seven young "Mad Scientist" geniuses. A hullaballoo over alleged flying saucers leads into an exciting confrontation in this wacky and enjoyable narrative. Also very highly recommended is the first book in Bertrand Brinley's "Mad Scientist" series for young readers, The Mad Scientists' Club (1930900104).

5-0 out of 5 stars Mad Mad Fun World
I loved the Mad Scientist club series (see my review of the "Mad Scientist Club" book). This is a continuation of that. Yes, the Hardy Boys are good, but this is better!

5-0 out of 5 stars As wonderful as the first one!
The original Mad Scientists Club was my favorite book as a kid. This one is equally outstanding. Sadly, it is out of print.
On the bright side, the first MSC has been rereleased recently, with plans for the New Adventures and the rare 3rd book THE BIG KERPLOP! Help keep this wonderful series alive! Your kids will love them! I can't wait until my 2 1/2 year old son is old enough to enjoy these books. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of variety, may look better than it is
This is an odd little collection of easy to read stories and poems, feauturing several prominent children's authors such as Dr. Seuss, Richard Scarry, and Stan & Jan Berenstain. It gets five stars for variety, two or three stars for substance. The collection doesn't seem to have any focus -- there is the very simple "Dog Party" ("Go dog go") and "Inside, Outside, Upside Down", short nonsense poems such as "Eat at Skipper Zipp's" and "Tweetle Beetles" by Dr. Seuss, and some more advanced stories like "The Surprise Story" and "20,000 Baseball Cards Under the Sea". Although the choice of stories and authors is commendable, the stories are not complete or developed enough to do the respective authories justice and give a child a meaningful introduction to the authors. The illustrations are plentiful and generally very good, and I expect that a toddler would enjoy looking at the pictures. The stories might not maintain the ongoing interest of a child capable of reading the stories for herself. If variety is what you're after, this may be a good choice. Otherwise, I'd look for a more focused collection of stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sampling of Childhood Favorites
The 16 stories in this excellent book are taken from authors that you loved as a kid: Richard Scarry, Dr. Seuss, the Berestains, P.D. Eastman and many more!

The book contains 11 full stories including the following:
Babar's Picnic
The Ugly Duckling
A Visit to Mr. Fixit
Freddie's Spaghetti

The other 5 works in the book are "selections" from the following:
Fox in Socks
Go, Dog, Go
I Can Read with My Eyes Shut
Oh, Say Can You Say

We used this book to help teach my daughter learn to read when she was 4. She is now 6 and still loves to read the stories and gaze at the cute, colorful illustrations.

This book is great for read aloud, to teach reading, or for a gift! I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Rounded Anthology
The Random House Book of Easy-to Read Stories is a well-rounded and charming anthology featuring selections from more than a dozen classic authors and illustrators. Dr. Seuss, Stan & Jan Berenstain, Richard Scarry, Laurent de Brunhoff, Marc Brown, Tomie de Paola, P. D. Eastman, Jon Buller, Susan Schade, Deborah Hautzig, and R. W. Alley are some of the names which many parents will remember with fondness. This book is a wonderful way to introduce your child to some of the authors you loved best when you were a child! The featured selections are well-suited to reading aloud and each page is heavily illustrated to capture the attention of even the youngest listeners.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stories are *NOT* complete
Be careful with this book. "Go Dog Go" and "Fox in Socks" are not included, only short excerpts as with 3 other Dr. Suess "stories" included. 5 of the remaining 11 stories are less than 3 pages. ... Read more
