5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for young children
This book is beautifully written and illustrated. I share this story with my 3rd and 4th graders to teach the comprehension strategies of visualization, questioning and inferring. It is a powerful teaching tool. ( For a full lesson see Stephanie Harvey's Strategies That Work). They love it! Picture books aren't just for little kids anymore!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story for children!
I shared this story with my physically and mentally handicapped students. They loved it. I wish there were more stories like this that they could relate to. I told the students about the author and how that she is blind from the same eye disease (RP) that I have. It helped my students to understand what it is like to be visually impaired. I hope that Estelle continues to write more books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures and deep feelings in a family.
I love inter-action within a family and this is a wonderful way to express the childhood responses of siblings. The brothers think they are the only ones who can see, but the indepth sight of their little sister warms the heart. Hooray for Estelle Condra for helping us who are physically sighted to see in a deeper way. A very helpful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones
I think this is one of the best book that Alvin Schwartz has ever written. I really enjoyed his last two books so I decided to read this book and I was not disapointed. I really liked the short story form for the book because it left me wondering what would happen next. Some of the stories are some what alike. But all of them were still fun to read. I really enjoyed all the stories because they were really funny. I would recommend this book to everyone. I would especially recommend this book to people who has read the other books by Alvin Schwartz.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still Scary, but not as rich
Scary Stories 3 offers up more tales of terror and madness, but it seems to me Schwartz has gone to the urban legends well for what should be the last time. While many of the stories are still suspenseful and scary, the same impact does not hold up against the first two volumes. Gammell's artwork is still wonderfully morbid, but I felt like I was reading stories which were only being written for another paycheck. Not as much heart. Don't get me wrong, I did still enjoy the book and WOULD recommend it to other readers, but feel, unfortunately, that a fourth volume would hold little for horror fans of all ages. Then again, maybe I just grew up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of scary stories
Well, by the title you can probably tell what the book is about. This book is about scary stories.
There is an very interesting part of this book it is called Hello Kate! It is about a ghost named Kate. She had died last year. Tom Conners was going to a dance. He was walking through the woods when he heard a strange sound. When he turned around he saw Kate. Then all of a sudden he remembered Kate was dead. He turned back around again but faster this time and didn't see her.
People who would like this book best would be teenagers, people that are older, and older children. Little children who don't like scary stories would defiantly not like this book.
I would give this book 10 out of 10 stars because it is a very scary books is a good but scary book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rude Beginnings
This book has several words in which I feel are not appropriate for a child's ear/story. Many of the characters are angry and show resentment. Would not advise buying for someone else's child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good kid's story
This being the first "Thomas the Tank Engine" book I've ever read. I recognized some stories as word-for-word narrations from "Thomas" videos, but since I haven't seen ALL of the video or TV stories, some stories were new to me. My sons are big Thomas fans, so I know they'll love these books when they get them for Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good story book
This is a good Thomas story book. There is a TV series about Thomas. Then there are vediotapes about Thomas and there are a whole lot toys about Thomas. Chilren like them all. When I bought this book, ha, my three young ones fought for it. And I had to read to them one by one in turn. And I have other Thomas book too. They just can get enough of Thomas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tiny sized, perfect for a 1 or 2 year-old
This is a set of four mini board books. The books are titled "I Can", "I See", "I Hear" and "I Touch". Each of these books is tiny in page size and each has 8 pages. Note that these books are each published separately as regular-sized board books and I believe that those contain more pages per book.

The tiny books come in a little box. Both the books and the box fit perfectly into the hands of a one and two year old toddler which I feel is the best feature of this product. So many good books are just too bulky or large for a toddler to really tote around easily. I love this little set as I feel it is a good thing when a toddler really enjoys books and the tiny size allows them to be held easily and comfortably. I did not discard the little box as my two-year old loves taking them out of the box and putting them back into the box as an activity in and of itself. He loves browsing them himself and of course having them read aloud. This little set entertained my son through a 5 plus hour plane ride and then a 2 hour car ride after that.

These are not stories; each 2-page spread contains one word and two illustrations for that word. The illustrations depict what looks like the Caillou character at a toddler age, although the boy and baby in the book remain nameless. Both my 2 year old and my 5 year old think this character is a toddler aged Caillou (although there is a different illustrator for the Caillou books). If you are not familiar with Caillou, he is a 4-year-old boy who is the main character in a PBS show and there are also Caillou books on the market. Since my 2 year old enjoys the Caillou show, he calls this character "baby Caillou". He loves these books and at the moment they are rarely out of his little hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxenbury's Tiniest Books--Biggest Hit
Believe it or not, I started sharing Helen Oxenbury's "Little Baby Books" with my grandbaby when she was only 4 weeks old. She would sit in her stroller in the yard while I sat on the steps reading the little books and showing her the pictures. She smiled her first smile while listening to "I Hear." She loves books but these four tiniest are her favorites. The best things do still come in small packages--Amy & her "Little Baby Books"! Wynndi

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful first book series for children
These very simple (one word associated with a picture) group of books are a wonderful way for very young children to begin to learn associations. The books are even wonderful for 2 year old in that they can now go through the books and tell you about what they see. My son loves this series! ... Read more

Book Description

Before he was a world-renowned children's book writer, Roald Dahl was a master of short stories for adults. The eleven tales collected here represent his finest work. By turns shocking, ironic, humorous, and touching, these stories are filled with bizarre twists and unexpected delights, and prove Roald Dahl's standing as one of the world's foremost storytellers. Readers will be spellbound from the opening lines.

"Packed with imaginative characters, quirky plots, and surprise endings, these eleven gems are the kinds of stories readers will want to share with their friends." (Children's Literature)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining!
Roald Dahl is a wonderful short story writer. He introduces all the characters in a very descriptive manner and ends his storys with twists that will make you want to read them over and over agian. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the stories but when reccommend them to teenagers 13 and above as some of them have a vast range of vocbulary that is sometimes confusing. I would suggest this book to all my friends. It is definitely worth buying! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonka's dark side is just as great!
I always imagined Roald Dahl fashioned Willy Wonka on himself -- but then I read this book and saw he is equally gifted in weaving dark horrifying tales as well as the whimsical fantastic children's books for which he is famous.

SKIN runs the gamut with strange tales about ordinary people --- the man who had his friend tattoo a picture of his wife on his back to find out, years later, it is worth a fortune; the 60-something man who runs into his childhood tormentor on the commuter rail, etc etc. All situations that COULD happen to you or someone you know .. thus making them all the more real and scary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Do You All Think This is a Kids' Book?
Dahl wrote for children as well as for grown-ups. Stop freaking out because this book isn't Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. It's excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED
I purchased this book in the belief that these stories would acually be macabre; instead they are only darkly humorous if even that. But this is Dahl, so my expectations were lowered from the beggining-although "Beware of Dog" was good. A particualary weak hearted reviewer gave this book one star because it was "horrifying" -heh heh heh. If one can't take this, I'd advise not to buy horror movies or you'll suffer a heart failure. The truth is cruel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skin!
I really liked the stories in this book, they are very clever, but a bit dark. All my friends want to read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy Scout resource!
This handy little book was written for the Boy Scout leader, to give you stories to tell around the campfire, as well as tips on how to tell them. There are twenty-four stories here: ten funny stories, and fourteen scary ones. Couple all that with the Telling A Story chapter, and you have got yourself a handy Scout resource!

Now that I am going on some Scout campouts, I have found the desire to be able to tell some "ghost" stores at the campfire, and this book (which is NOT an official BSA publication, by the way) is a nice thing to have. The stories are great, but I must say that their length at six pages does rather tax my memorizing abilities. That said, though, I did like this book, and highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Campfire Book!
Fun book to have with you when camping with kids! A few stories may not suit children too young, but otherwise, light and great around a campfire!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun-filled, and scary read!
If you are interested in camping out in the woods, and telling ghost stories this book would be a great read. My favorite tale is "The Boy Who Cried Werewolf" which is a take-off of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" story. Harriot is effective at being both funny and scary with this story whose ending is reminiscent of shaggy-dog stories. The second half of the book has some pretty frightening works, like "A Night at the Delany House", which is a creepy tale about two kids who are dared to stare at a haunted house for a night. Kids will love it, especially the funny ones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to enhance your child's imagination!
This is a wonderful book! I was a bit apprehensive about buying it because it includes no text. However, this has quickly turned into a bedtime favorite at our house. My son received it when he was about 18 months old and a year later, he still requests it by name. We look at the pictures and he is able to tell me what is happening on each page and he often makes up a story about what he sees. This book takes you on a journey across the country with a truck carrying bicycles. You see the truck drive in fog, rain, in traffic and (my son's favorite) through a tunnel. My son has learned some basic traffic signs, shapes and even directions (left, right, up, down) with this story. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for kids who resist reading!
I bought this book when my son was 18 months old. He had NO interest at all in sitting still to look at books. He took one look at all those TRUCKS and was transfixed. From the day I brought this book home he showed a greater interest in his other books and at 3 1/2 he is an avid "reader".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, colorful book!
I wasn't sure whether or not my son would enjoy the textless book but it has quickly become his favorite book! It is so bright and colorful and encourages me to make up different stories each time I read it to him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beep Beep Beep Beep yeh!
When I ask my 3 year old son Charlie to choose three books for bedtime reading, this book is invariably chosen from his truck shelf of books. The book documents a tractor trailer's trip, using signs, light signals and lots of traffic and highways. He loves it and so do I. This book also won a Caldecott Medal for illustrations when it was first published. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for pre-schoolers
This small children's book about a large delivery truck traveling on the highways is told without words and was a 1981 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a children's book. Little children really enjoy following the truck to its final destination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Heartwarmer by Lucy
This book is an endearing collection of short stories. The first time I read the Anne series at age 10, I refused to read this book because it wasn't about Anne. However, at age 21, I have grown up and recently read it. Read this and become enmeshed in other Avonlea lives. Also, look forward to references to our favorite heroine, Anne Shirley! I promise you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Iza Trapani has done it again!!!
This women is amazing!!! I love the way she makes the teapot the main character in the story. Iza Trapani's books have been our all-time favorites. She has a way of taking already wonderful children's songs and making them even more memorable.

The theme of the book, is a teapot wanting to share it's dreams with the children (brother and sister). The book takes the chidren on a wonderful, imaginitive, adventure to China, Spain, and even outer space. There's a jungle adventure where the little teapot plays peek-a-boo with the children. My kids like finding the children in the picture (and the other hidden animals from previous verses). The illustration is wonderful. As you can see by the cover, the teapot is drawn with cherub-like soft curvy lines (as are the childern).

The finale is adorable. The childern are having tea with their entire family, even the characters from all their teapot adventures (including the alien from outer space!). Can you spot them all?

I must also HIGHLY recommend "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction guaranteed
I received this book from my dear sister, who teaches 1st/2nd Grade and always finds the best books. This is my favorite book by Iza Trapani, consisting of a familiar tune with the familiar lyrics and fun twist of new lyrics that the illustrations accentuate. This is one of the few books I can read simultaneously to both of my sons (2 1/2 and 4 1/2) without one getting bored or the other losing interest - and that after almost 2 years!! Satisfaction guaranteed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby's favorite thing!
We got a free copy of this book when our daughter was born, and within several months, it was her favorite thing. She loved it to death, so to speak, so we bought her the boardbook version. She's 16 months and version 2 is a casualty of love. I'm about to get yet another copy.

While the lyrics lack a bit if you want to teach your child about traveling or the world, the premise of the story is cute, and my child loves to have this sung to her. It is the first thing she picks up every morning.

If you have the patience to sing the "I'm a Little Teapot" tune over and over and over again, I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite Iza Trapani book!
I love the wonderful pictures and the rhyme is so much fun! The pages are sturdy and have been in the hands of my toddler countless times. This and Itsy Bitsy Spider are the only books of this kind that my oldest son can hold the tune to throughout all the verses! "I'm A Little Teapot" will always be my favorite but my kids love "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 Year-Old Loves This Book!
We received this book as a gift and my daughter took to it immediately, which is saying a lot, because she does not get that "into" books. I think she especially likes this one because when I read it to her I can sing the story to "I'm a Little Teapot". I don't think I would have bought this one had I seen it in a store, but I sure and glad we have it! ... Read more

"There is no Jessica," said Ruthie's parents. But of course there was. She ate with Ruthie, played with Ruthie, and was sorry when Ruthie was bad. Nobody could see Jessica -- except Ruthie. When it came time for Ruthie to go to school, Jessica went with her. Her parents hoped Ruthie would find a friend at school who would replace Jessica. They were in for a (happy) surprise!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite Book
An elementary school teacher gave me this book at my baby shower. She told me that her students loved "Jessica," and that my daughter would, too. Time has proven her correct. Recently, my daughter, who is now two and a half years old, asked that I read her the book. "Jessica" has quickly become her favorite book. The story is about five-year-old Ruthie. Ruthie doesn't have a brother, a sister, a cat, or a dog but she has an imaginary friend, Jessica, "who is even better." Although Ruthie's parents tell her that "There is no Jessica," Ruthie knows that there is. The book describes all of the activities that Ruthie and Jessica do together and concludes with Ruthie's discovery of a "real" Jessica when Ruthie begins kindergarten. My daughter loves this book and can recite it word for word. Children quickly become familiar with the story because key words and phrases are repeated throughout the book. More importantly, the book talks about activities and fears that all young children have and accurately depicts a child's hesitation to voice his or her fears. For example, when Ruthie's parents want to go to a movie, "Jessica," not Ruthie, gets a stomach ache and wants them to stay home. This is a terrific book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Making friends is easier than it looks!
I just read this book a few minutes ago. it's about a little girl named Ruthie who has an imaginary friend named Jessica. They do everything together! From reading books, to playing with blocks. They are the best of friends. Ruthie's parents try to get her to believe that Jessica isn't real, but Ruthie won't listen to them. On the first day of kindergarden, Jessica goes along with Ruthie. But, Ruthie makes a new friend, whose name also happens to be Jessica and they become really good friends. I think that if you know of a child who has an imaginary friend, then they should deffinately read this book, or you could read it to them! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Little in the Brave New World
This version of Chicken Little is too convoluted and politically correct for my enjoyment. I enjoy a twist on an old tradition sometimes, but this was too different for me. It was a brand new story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious romp
No, this isn't the traditional version of Chicken Little. It is, however, sly, funny, and well written and illustrated. As an adult, I really appreciate children's books that have a sense of humor and a vocabularly that's not "dumbed down." Our copy of this book goes in a bookshelf in my room so it doesn't get ripped up any more than it is already--I want to make sure I have a copy of this one for keeps.

Kellogg's version of Chicken Little deserves to be as much a classic as "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig." It makes a great gift--too many kids have bookshelves filled with colorless Disney rehashes that parents dread reading aloud. Books like this one are one of the best ways to help kids learn that reading is entertaining and satisfying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Version of Henny Penny
If you are looking for the old fashioned "The sky is falling, must tell the King" then don't buy this book. The book you are looking for is titled "Henny Penny". Both books depict the same chain reaction of hysteria and are both well written. But, if you want the one that you remember from many moons ago, get Henny Penny.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not the one your parents read you 30 years ago!
I expected the same story from when I was a child. It was one of my favorite books. I was disapointed to learn how it has changed. Chicken Little is hit with an acorn instead of an apple. He runs to tell the police, rather than the king. It just seems to be lacking that fairy tale quality about it that I loved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clever and, yes, enchanting!
This is one of those special children's books that has captivated me, as well my son. The text is filled with funny remarks for parental appreciation. And it appeals to a child's imagination, portraying the child as probelm solver as well as trouble maker. The story resolves in a surprisingly clever way, dispelling all the trouble caused by the dragon. This is a witty enchanting fantasy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kindling Imagination in a New Generation
The illustrations are lovely and the story is enchanting, but the way The Book of Beasts has inspired my 4 year old daughter's imagination is priceless. I have read it to her more times than I can count and neither of us ever tires of it, she loves the pure fantasy and magic in this book. She now fantasizes that she has her very own hippogryph (how many 4 year olds know THAT word??!!) and she flies all over the world with it. Not only is this book a treat in and of itself, but because it's beautiful illustrations and enchanting tale have inspired these wonderful flights of fancy I'm able to teach her about different countries: I simply ask her to whisper a destination into her hyppogryph's ear and close her eyes, and I take her to that place with words, describing as much as I can about the landscape and culture and people there -- but recently her hippogryph has been getting lost on it's way to Disneyland and ending up in places like Greece and Malta and Thailand.... ;-)

The first time we read it my daughter was bothered that the manticora ate the cats in town, especially since we have two cats. So I had to reassure her that first time, by skipping forward to show her that they were fine and happy in the end (was that one of the changes made in the update??) and then going back and continuing the story -- it worked and now she's fine with that part.

If you have young children in your life share this lovely tale with them. You won't regret it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch Out For That Dragon!
This book is a lot of fun, sparkling with the wit of E.Nesbit and filled with fantastic beasts that stir up quite a bit of trouble for a little boy whose great-great-great-great-great grandfather has died and left a kingdom to him. The original, unabridged version was written in 1900 and is included in a collection of stories called "The Book of Dragons". Inge Moore's new version of the story of the Book of Beasts is a wonderful opportunity for us to enjoy these fun-filled characters and the gentle humour of this great childrens' author.
Meet the Blue Bird of Paradise, the huge Red Dragon, the Manticora, and the beautiful Hippogriff and discover young King Lionel's thoughtful solutions to the problems they create when they spring to life straight off the pages of the magical Book of Beasts.
Moore's illustrations are colorful and comic and I enjoyed them a lot. I am so pleased that this captivating E. Nesbit tale is once again available to a wide readership. Don't miss it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 YEARS LATER AND IT STILL ENCHANTS
This reissue of the classic tale by E. Nesbit originally published in 1900 is more than welcome, it's a joy. Abridged and illustrated by Inga Moore it will fascinate and entertain another generation of youngsters.

The Book Of Beasts revolves around Lionel, a young boy who learns that he is to be king. He is informed of this startling news by two elderly robed gentlemen wearing gold coronets "with velvet sticking up out of the middle like cream in jam tarts."

After being crowned he is delighted to find a wondrous library in the palace. Lionel is drawn to a large brown book that lay on a table; it was titled "The Book Of Beasts." When he opened it he saw a painting of a beautiful butterfly. Most amazing of all, the butterfly flew right off the page!

Even though the chancellor warned him not to look at the book, Lionel crept back to the library during the night and looked at the book once more, and he looked again the next day when, horrors, he came upon a page marked "Dragon," and the most fearsome beast was released.

Now, it has fallen to King Lionel to find another beast in the magic book, another beast strong and brave enough to defeat the dragon so that the people will be saved.

One hundred years later The Book Of Beasts still enchants. ... Read more

What can one smile do? Quite a lot as we find out in this noteworthy tale. The story begins with Katie walking with her mother through the park. She thoughtfully bestows a bright smile on a forlorn, out-of-work young man sitting on a park bench. It inspires the young man to begin looking for a new job. While doing so, he sees a woman whose car has a flat tire. He changes the tire for her. She, in turn, leaves a large tip for a waitress. This continues on until, eventually, the good feelings inspired by Katie's smile comes back to her and her mother.

The text is well-written and flows smoothly. The themes of kindness and interconnectedness shine through on each page.

The illustrations are exceptional. The paintings are realistic and done in vibrant colors. Each double-page spread captures perfectly the mood and atmosphere of the story and invites the reader into the scene.

Without lapsing into moralizing, One Smile shows readers that small acts of kindness, when sent out into the world, can have profound and lasting effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
One simple little smile, sometimes given without any thought at all, can start a ripple of happiness that will go on forever. This is the unmistakable truth that is so clearly authenticated in One Smile.

This story is about little Katie who was happily skipping along in the park one sunny morning with her mother. They were hurrying to catch a bus because their van was in the shop for repairs. As Katie and her mother briskly walked past a park bench, Katie spied a young man sitting there who looked very sad. Katie had no way of knowing it, but the young man had just lost his job. Quick as a wink, she flashed him a brilliant smile. That beautiful smile, so freely given by this happy little child, seemed to light up his heart. Other people had passed him that morning without even noticing him; therefore, Katie's innocent smile, which was so unexpected, became his inspiration to start looking for a job.

As the author carries us through the story, we see many acts of kindness unfold as others continue what Katie's innocent smile began. The young man stops to help a woman by fixing her flat tire. Later, when this same woman finished her lunch, she left an extra large tip for the waitress. And so it went as Katie's smile moved on and on in many different ways, and eventually even made its way back to help Katie in the story's heart-warming ending. Thus we see that all it really takes to change the world is One Smile.

***** I highly recommend this book. It is very well written and the illustrations are vivid and beautiful. In the back of the book the author has included a page that will help families think about things they can do together to help others. *****

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was looking at this book with my sister (who's a teacher), and we loved it. There's no writting, so children can discuss what happened in th argument etc... It's also a story that can mean many things, from fights on the playground to war.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Book for Older Children
I am currently a 5th grade teacher, but I have shared this book with 4th graders also. It is a great book to bring out when "trouble" begins to brew in your classroom. The students are facinated with a "wordless" book, and they also enjoy reading a picture book (something they often do not read as they get older).
This book illustrates what happens when 2 individuals start an argument and then gain assistance from others who are not originally involved, resulting in a large catastrophe . These situations happen many times on the playground, and all I have to do is show them this book and discuss that fighting does not improve anything.
I recommend this to all upper grade teachers. I enjoy it, and it teaches a valuable lesson in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures worth a thousand words
Popov's allegorial tale is a witty and provocative tale that will appeal to "readers" of all ages. His drawings have a dark comedic edge that does not undermine the seriousness of his message. "Why?" is a wonderful book for stimulating discussion on conflict, its causes and its end results. Bravo, Popov, for a job well done. ... Read more
