Book Description

What do you do if you can't sleep? Count sheep! That's what the restless hero of this rollicking tale does. And when sheep don't work, he counts kangaroos by twos and monkeys by threes. But when he gets to bees by fours, the animals run amok! Then it's a countdown to dream time. With energetic, bright illustrations and rhythmic text, this is a great introduction to the idea of counting by sets, a precursor to multiplication. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charmingly Illustrated
The illustrations in this book took me back to my childhood, and reminded me of the magic I used to feel when I first discovered picture books. It makes me wish other book illustrators took some lessons from the past and applied their knowledge to make children's books fun again. I will recommend this book to any parent who wants to give their child the same excitement they felt when they cracked open their favorite picture book.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's a Beebee Bird?
This is a cute bedtime book. We meet a lot of tired animals in the zoo who are trying to get to sleep when a baby bird keeps them up with his singing. So, to get back at him, all day long they make noise and cause the bird to miss his nap. That night, he is so tired that he doesn't sing and everyone is able to get some sleep. I had fun reading this book to some kids for nap time and they enjoying the silly repeating phrase "beebeebobbi" - especially when I said it the way that all of the different animals would. I did have to take a star away because at times the text can be difficult to read - especially for beginning readers who are trying to follow along while reading over your shoulder. Also, it can be a little bit too exciting when trying to get children to settle down for a nap.

Why 3 stars?:
A fun book with some funny moments, but some of the text can be difficult to read. Parts can be a little too exciting when trying to have kids fall asleep. All in all, a good book that should be used carefully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny for the whole family
This book is funny in a way the whole family can relate to. Parents and siblings who have been kept awake by a baby will especially enjoy the comic view of their predicament. Those who do the waking will enjoy the baby bird's expressing their viewpoint. The artwork is great at showing the exhausted and irascible animals who are kept awake by the cheerful baby bird. The typesetting is very clever, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why only males at the zoo?
This is a cute book, first written in 1963 & reillustrated by the wonderful Steven Kellogg, who has used his talent well here. But I found it disappointing that everyone identified by gender was male: the bear, lion, elephant, the bird and the zookeeper. Sure, it was written a while ago but presumably there were female animals then, too, right?

5-0 out of 5 stars I've loved this book for 40 years
I still remember the librarian reading this book to us in first grade. I remembered it when my children were born but, alas, couldn't find it in print any longer. So I got it out of the library and photocopied the whole thing (horrors!). My kids loved that black-and-white version so much that, now that I'm a grandmother, my son wants it to read to his own son. Thank God it's going to be republished! This is probaby the only book that our entire family has loved for so long. It is delightful and funny and warm. And it appeals to everyone because nobody gets to escape the problems that the kid with the mixed-up sleep schedule poses. I am still known to roar "Beebee bobby!" like a lion!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Nine-month old daughter loves this book!
I found an old copy of this book in my Mom's attic and I'm glad it's being re-published. It's a great children's book about a bird that makes noise at night at the zoo and the animals don't like it. Not only does it have lots of funny animal noises to make (which my daughter loves) but its message is about sleeping at night and staying awake during the day. (If only it were that easy!) ... Book Description

On a dark, dark night
On an old, old farm
In a rickety, crickety
Tumbledown barn,
Everyone slept peacefully--
But not the flea.

What happens when a tiny flea gets a bad case of the sniffles? Utter pandemonium in the barnyard! This rollicking preschool picture book follows a lovable flea and his exceptional sneeze through the mayhem. Before the night is over, every animal--from the mouse to the cow--has something to say. Will the animals ever be able to go back to sleep?

Lynn Downey's quirky text, which begs to be read aloud, combines with Karla Fircharnrner's charming pictures to make this a winning story for very young children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading and great illustrations!
This is a beautiful picture book with a fun, rhyming story, and super illustrations! The poor flea has a cold and he sounds stuffy when he talks ("Does eddybody hab a tissue for be?"). He sniffles, sneezes, and wakes up the whole barn! There are lots of animal sounds to read, too, which little ones usually love. Great fun for your 3-6 year-old!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Read Aloud
Entertaining and funny book. Nicely illustrated. Good for reading aloud, particularly if you include sounds (snoring, sneezing). My 3 yr old daughter really enjoys this one. She now recites it from memory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great artwork, contrived story
I love love love the illustrations of this book. They're so full of colour, movement and personality. Lots of kid appeal! However, I feel that the artwork is its strongest point. While I appreciated the value in the repetition and the rhyming, I found the story and the rhyme itself very contrived. I felt as if the author was trying too hard to get the rhyme to fit neatly and compactly into the almost 30 pages that the story rests on.

That said, my 3 year old daughter loves this book and whenever she asks me to read it, I have to do so several times before I manage to redirect her attention towards a different book. She laughs hysterically whenever we get to the part where the flea sneezes. That reaction must count for something and probably has more merit than the opinion of her cranky mommy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tumble-down wonderful
This is one of the best children's books we've read. Our 3 year old loves the repetition and after a couple of readings, has memorized the entire book. We have to read it every night before bed. It is a wonderful story, and the illustrations are fabulous. A must have for your child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Any book that can make my three year old grand-daughter
laugh out loud deserves a five star rating. It was a delightful story, very easy to read. It is a favorite of ours, that will be read again and again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting and imaginative!
This book is absolutely one of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I have seen in a long time. The pictures capture the attention of both young children and adults alike. The clever story is also easy for kids to understand, while at the same time, educational. My kids love this book, and it would be a wonderful addition to your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a lovely book.
I just purchased this book after hearing the illustrator speak. The pictures are bright and soft, the text musical and sweet. It just won the 2002 Pacific Northwest Book Award. A beautiful addition to any picture book library.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's so hard to find a good children's book like this
I appreciate a change from the usual cast of children's books characters (cat, dog, cow, horse): this book features otters, bats, foxes, anemones, eagles, and so on. The poems are great: the author rounds out the lines without useless filler words such as "very," "really," and "quite." Soothing verses and gentle pictures make this an excellent children's book. If you're from the Pacific Northwest, you must add this to your collection; if you're from anywhere else, you'll want to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is another wonderful book by Phyllis Root. The pictures are beautiful and the story has a dreamy rhythm that will help your child fall asleep. This is also a counting book. My son who is three loves this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED BEDTIME STORY
This is a bedtime story you can count on - literally. Pastel and acrylic illustrations in moonlit tones follow the adventures of ten little sheep on their way to bed.

When their mother calls that it's time to go to sleep the ten sheep jump over the cucumber vine to play some more. But gradually one by one the lambs tire and fall asleep.

Youngsters will enjoy watching the lambs as they see blossoms close and ducklings close, all soft drowsy suggestions. In addition, young ones can practice their counting as they nod off.

"Ten Sleepy Sheep" is an imaginative bedtime story beautifully illustrated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hiccups for Elephant
The book Hiccups for Elephant is a great children's book. It is about an elephant that has the hiccups. The other animals in the book are trying to sleep. But elephant can't because he has the hiccups. Elephant wakes them up on accident. So in the story all the animals work together. So they can find a way he will stop hiccupping. The book is funny and teaches a great lesson. About how important it is to work together and try to figure things out. This book I think is for kids between ages 4 -7 years old. This is a great book and it's funny. With the small words it helps children learn to read. It's a great book for the kids. The person reading it will enjoy it too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf!
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf was an all right book! It was about how trees are planted, which leafs belong to which trees, and also how workers come and pick up tree sprouts to get transplanted and they tend them year after year then once the trees start to settle in they get measured, marked, and then uprooted again the workers load the tree up and take it to a place where people can go and buy it and re-plant it in their yard and that's what the kid in the story did! I don't think kids would really enjoy this book because it was pretty boring in my opinion but also very educational to the point kids would learn many things from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning readers
Hiccups for Elephant is a great book for beginning readers because it's short, funny for the young'ens, and the letters are big and easy to see. This book is about a groups of animals trying to take a nap, but one has hiccups, the elephant. The animals wake up one at a time to try and help the elephant fall asleep. I strongly recommend this book for parents that are trying to get their kids to learn how to read. FORGET hooked-on-phonics. Why waste money on cheap carp when you can spend 3 bucks on this or less. GET THIS BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hiccups for Elephant
I think that this book is a great learn how to read and easy reader book. It blends laughs and learning. My sister read it to me and she loved it. She kept reading it for the next few nights. She thought it was very funny and I think she learned a lot of reading skills from this book. After the few days she complained it was too short, so I think that it would of been better if it was a little longer but still easy. I did think it was kind of short when my sister read it, but other than that i think that this is a great buy if you have kids learning to read. If you have a kid that's beginning to read i think that this book would be a great buy for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and enjoyable book for both parents and children
The first time I read the book, I fell in love with it right along with my 3 yr. old Son. We've read it together so many times now, that my Son has memorized the first few pages! (he says the "NO!" part best). Not only do we love the story, but we also love the illustrations. I went out and bought the book for a friend so she could enjoy it with her son as much as we have.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book
The illustrations are WONDERFUL and the story is fun. I would recommend this book to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "bad" baby's journey into night
It doesn't take long for the trouble to start in "The Boy who wouldn't go to Bed". Confronted with the age-old parental imperative of "Bedtime", appalled at the absurdity of such a command when "it's still light", and utterly unintimidated by the power disparity involved, the baby retorts with a steely "No!", hops into his car and roars off into the night, leaving his mother far behind. At the outset the illustrations are suffused with a beautiful golden light but as the journey progresses that light begins to fail and we are left to reflect on the wisdom of the baby's decision.

This baby is a man of action who is bound to appeal to any child who's ever confronted an "unreasonable" bedtime, or any other "unreasonable" parental dictat. His dynamic response shows from the outset that he is a force to be reckoned with who will not kowtow to authority figures, no matter now mighty. The stage is set for a showdown more reminiscent of "Cool-Hand Luke" or "Braveheart", for it is clear our hero is prepared to match himself against any adversary. No whining, crying or ineffectual complaining here, but a forthright declaration of independence by the baby. Yet as the story progresses it is clear that independence has its price. The baby's long journey into night brings him up against all kinds of dark, mysterious characters, each with their own, sleep-related agenda. The night world beyond the bedroom soon proves resistant (or at least too sleepy to respond) to the baby's efforts to command it and as the tale progresses even the baby's faithful car threatens to fail him. The baby searches in vain for reliable (or at least wakeful) companions to share his adventures but without a Gandalf to help him assemble a "fellowship" his journey to the world of darkness threatens to be a lonely one. And just when it looks like he's really on his own, it becomes apparent that something or someone is pursuing the baby, and not until the book's grand finale do we see who that pursuer is (though knowing parents can probably guess!).

The book's message, if it has one, is that there are primordial forces in this world that even a baby with a car should hesitate to match himself against, and that the rhythms of nighttimes and bedtimes are beyond the power of mere children to challenge. Like King Canute, by book end the baby has learned an important lesson about the power of nature and that we all have to sleep sometime.

Helen Cooper conveys that lesson with incredible skill. Her beautiful, award-winning illustrations capture the light of the failing day perfectly, and the progression from gold to dusk to gloom enhances the sense of a journey from one realm to another. And at the end of the book we see that the strange creatures and settings our hero encounters have their analogues much closer to home.

Like Scorcese's "After Hours", this book is perfect at conveying that sense of things closing down for the night, and the terrors of being caught outside alone, far from home, in a strange territory full of characters who won't conform to our ideas of what is proper night behaviour. It also reminds me of "The Phantom Tollbooth", another child's toy auto journey into a fantastic night world.

This is a wonderful bedtime book that is great fun reading to small children (7 and below). The Breugel-like level of detail in the illustrations are an endless source of fascination for small children. Each time you read it there is liable to be a new detail that catches their interest and provokes discussion, though sometimes requiring an adult to improvise explanations for certain illustrations that aren't apparent from the text. The text is simple but fresh, with stimulating repetitions, and lots of opportunities for interactive dialogues between child and reader. The tensions in the story and the sly humour of many of the illustrations and situations make it exciting to read while the relentless repetition of its main theme - the importance of sleep - can be quite sleep-inducing. I've almost fallen asleep reading it sometimes, yet by no means from boredom. It is so easy to identify with that baby, and share his frustration as his efforts to find fellow travellers fail. Right from the opening bedtime showdown I can tell the children I read it to are thinking "Been there! Been there!" We are all torn between rooting for the baby yet worrying about the implications for bedtimes everywhere if he succeds .

I would strongly recommend this book for anyone involved with small children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
My almost 2 year old son got this book for X-mas.We have been reading it everyday since. He loves it! After reading this book 3 or 4 times he says sleepy now when it is time to go to bed.
I like it because it seems to get the message across that night is for sleeping. Plus it has beautiful illustrations and the text isn't completely assanine. After writing this I am going to buy some more of this authors books. Too bad she doesn't have one about going to the potty :)

1-0 out of 5 stars I was misled by all these glowing reviews.
Let me qualify something. I have a two year old. This book is not good for a two year old. Pictures: Poorly done, with some artistic watercolors that are really to dark. Not a bright happy and pleasing in the illustration department. The pictures are really elementary in skill level. Story: This book is really just a huge social message about the loss of habitat for certain animals. I dont think that little kids really can conceptialize this let alone care. The message also offers no solution to the problem. Leaves you hanging at the end as you wonder if you missed something. Text: Not a rhyming book. Actually, just did not have good flow. I hate to be the odd man out here, but for MY purposes - not a book that I would recommend you buy. ... Read more

My 2+ year old LOVES this book. It takes the child through the average bedtime routine, asking questions (where do you sleep (warning: Prudence sleeps in a bed, NOT a crib), why do you dream and explainations (what are dreams, etc.). At the end of the story is a sweet, simple lullaby that she sings to us instead of us singing to her! My only problem with the book is that it's VERY wordy - not a quick bedtime story. 4-0 out of 5 stars A SOOTHING AND AMUSING BEDTIME STORY
This bedtime story is both soothing and amusing as we meet the Little Sleepyhead who lived long, long ago - so long ago "that all the rocks were little pebbles and all the chicks were still in their eggs."

Now, Little Sleepyhead is an energetic and fun-loving young fellow. He spends all day racing up and down hills, leaping across streams, and thoroughly exhausting himself. As the day draws to a close he starts looking for some place to sleep. Where can that be?

He finds birds tucked in their nests, turtles safe in their shells, and beavers snoozing in ponds. But, where is a boy to sleep? He tried the grass, but bugs found their way into his nose. He copied squirrels hugging a tree branch but that was way too bumpy. He thought he'd found the perfect place snuggled up to a big furry bear. But the bear's snoring kept him awake.

By the time Little Sleepyhead finds the perfect place to sleep, chances are young listeners will be well on their way to dreamland.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that introduced Max
This is a mind-expanding book. It's quirky (like all of Kalman's books), beautifully illustrated (with real art), and it introduces the character Max the blue dog who stars in some of her later books. It looks like a kids book, but really offers something for all who are open to it. Kids can relate to LuLu and her brother, and adults can better relate to kids when they remember their own dreams and fantasies and (if they're lucky) the stories their siblings told to get them to go to sleep. A great book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Early Read
A good read for young children with an interest in pirates. Written in diary fashion, it makes a good story to read to a child at bedtime with lots of convenient places to stop. The author uses a good deal of nautical terminology, but does a good job of explaining it all within the context of story.

The story revolves around the diary of a young boy off to sea for his first time. He ends up with pirates when his ship is captured and after a few adventures returns home to accept a pardon. Richard Platt has authored several children's books about pirates and does justice to the reality of life at sea and with pirates without getting too graphic.

The illustrations are entertaining pen drawings that contribute to the story, although the style takes a bit of getting used to (I'm still not sure I like it). The book also includes a brief overview of the history of piracy and some famous pirates. The index also doubles as a glossary of some of the terms used. P-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Bed-Time or Read-Aloud Story
"Princess, Princess" is a re-telling of the fairy-tale, "Sleeping Beauty." The story begins with a flashback of the princess and her fairy friends in a deep sleep. The reader is asked, "Who will wake the princess with a kiss?" Then, the story unfolds. The princess has a birthday party and invites all the fairies, but one lone fairy. The hurt and angry fairy casts a spell on the group causing them to fall into a deep sleep. the castle, forest, and the surrondings that were once alive with life, move into a sweet slumber. Seeing the princess and her friends asleep, we are taken back to the traditional tale of "Sleeping Beauty," with an added-twist of fairies replacing humans and reconciliation on the spell. This story would be an excellent bed-time story or read-aloud.
Penny Dale multi-tasks as the author and the illustrator in this story. The illustrations are soft-pastels that grow more ellaborate throughout the story and compliment the text. The text has repetition of action verbs that will help the child become familar with written print and vocabulary, through recognizing sight words. This story is suitable for children in primary grades. Overall, Penny Dale has done an excellent job in portraying the classic version of "Sleeping Beauty" in this new and exciting re-telling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great going to bed book
What a great book. My 17 month old now runs to the stairs to go to bed and asks for "the sleepy book". The pictures are beautiful, the pages CAN'T tear, and she loves it. She stands when the giraffe page comes, but sits right back down with the owl. A nice change from Goodnight Moon which we read for 17 months!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Cozy Book
Jane Howard lulls us to sleep with soothing adjectives such as cozy, curl, stretch, yawn and warm, while we're drawn in by Lynne Cherry's illustrations utilizing brilliant colors and life-like imagery. This is a simple bedtime story that pacifies both reader and listener. It draws you in with the repetition of the phrase, "When I'm sleepy," and keeps you in a very tranquil mood until the very end. I read this book to my children in order to calm myself down. Days are hectic for both children and their parents, and I always found this book to be of comfort to both. There is an appreciation for nature and a glance into our wildlife, their habitat, and how the animal kingdom comes to rest. The earth tones of green, orange, red and blue are found on every page. The young girl sleeps beside the animals in their sprawling or confined surroundings and appears content in every posture. This book roams through the mind of a sleepy young girl wishing and wondering what it would be like to sleep with turtles in a swamp, raccoons in a hollow log, penguins on the freezing ice or giraffes standing up. She is pictured on each page doing those things that transform the setting but not the mood of the story. In the end she discovers the place she desires most is her own cozy bed with warm cuddly blankets and a soft pillow. On the final page, fluffy white clouds above her head reveal the various animals she had imagined as she was falling asleep. I think this book is a delightful alternative to counting sheep! I would recommend it to anyone who like me is always trying to find ways to get children to relax. You cannot read this book without becoming relaxed. It's like a magic potion. Jane Howard captured the essence of falling asleep in a unique and captivating way. The illustrations seal the words inside a cozy blanket of color and style that makes this book a true work of art!

3-0 out of 5 stars good bedtime story for children who sleep alone
The book opens with a little girl lying alone in her bed, with her teddy bear. At first she is unhappy being in her bed alone at night, as she wishes she could sleep in various places in the world with the animals that live there instead. Places range from curled up with a bird in a nest to sleeping standing up in between two penguins on the ice. In almost every picture she is snuggled up with the animal. After going through various scenarios she states she is happy to be sleeping in her own bed with her blanket and pillow, and we see her sleeping with two stuffed animals and dreaming of her real animal friends. After visiting these various sleeping arrangements I expected to see her sleeping alongside her parents, as humans used to do for most of our existance on this planet, and as some cultures continue to do today. It seemed silly to me for her to have been so happy literally curled up sleeping next to a bear and a raccoon, but then at home she is relegated to sleeping with stuffed toys. I would have given this book more stars if she was shown sharing sleep with her parents which is what historically, human children have done. The illustrations are very nice and show fine details of various habitats such as under the sea and the Egyptian desert. This is obviously a good story to read to your child before bedtime especially if your child sleeps alone, or if you are transitioning from a family bed to having your child sleep alone. If you have a family bed your child may be a little confused about why the girl is sleeping all alone.Parents who enjoy books and stories about wildlife will also like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Bed Time Story
From the back cover of this book:" A gorgeous bedtime classic is now a board book. How would it feel to sleep in a bird's downy nest? Or in a bear's snug cave? This soothing, fanciful story invites children to imagine. But it also shows them that the sweetest dreams are found in their own soft beds."

Lynne Cherry's wonderful illustrations make this a classic "must have" book for all who read stories to children before bed. This one will make even wild kids sleepy! In this story a sleepy young girl wonders what it would be like to snuggle with a variety of cuddley animals...the illustrations are so endearing that your child won't be able to wait to snuggle her favorite bedtime toy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute illustrations - excellent bedtime read
My 16 month old son hands me this book almost every night. The main character is a little girl who wonders what it would be like to sleep where animals do - in different surroundings (e.g. birds nest, underwater). The illustrations are colorful and show different animals sleeping in their respective environments. ... Read more

Book Description

Time to get up!

Did you ever wonder how people woke up in time for school
or work in the days before alarm clocks? In the early twentieth century, townspeople in England hired "knocker-ups" like Mary Smith for a few pence a week. Mary Smith traveled through predawn streets armed with a peashooter and a pocket watch, waking her clients at whatever hour they requested by plinking dried peas at their bedroom windows.

In rollicking words and pictures, Andrea U’Ren re-creates one busy morning in the life of her intrepid true-life subject – a morning when Mary Smith helps her town start its day in timely fashion, only to receive a rude awakening when she comes home. Could it be that the knocker-up’s own daughter has been sleeping in?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great historical fiction
This is a wonderful work of historical fiction. The real photo of Mary Smith adds to the engagement of young children. My class loves this book and I do,too. This is a part of history that I had never heard before. Cute ending that the children loved. I buy a lot of books for my classroom; some are "keepers" that I allow the children to use for a few days and are returned to my personal collection while others are placed in the children's collection which they have continual access to. This one is a "keeper".

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
Besides an interesting peek into a unique aspect of history this book is charming in it's presentation. The photo of Mary Smith at the beginning of the book immediately gives the book credibility and tugs at the readers curiosity. A surprise ending is light-hearted and an added bonus. Fun and informative! ... Read more
