5-0 out of 5 stars A Notable Twist on an Old Classic --Great for Young Toddlers
My son received this book as a gift when he was 1. I still read it regularly to him at 28 months. The book features Twinkle Twinkle Little Start plus a few verses you probably don't know on one side. Then flip the book to read Golden Slumbers, which may be new to you as it was to me.

The illustrations in this book are dazzling, literally. Not only do the figures feature the bold colors and contrasts toddlers love (not too busy), but each page also has a holographic overlay with a star or moon. There are also some cut-out pages adding a tactile dimension to the book. The celestial theme is carried throughout the book which has no religious overtones.

I have only one very small gripe about this book. The rhythm is lost in one of the verses of Twinkle Twinkle ("She would not know which way to go, if you did not twinkle so"). You have to sort of swallor the word "She" and accent the word "would" to make it work.

Otherwise, I adore this book. It makes a lovely shower gift so parents can start to read to their children from day one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Music of the Night.....
"In a little log house,/On a great green hill,/Under a shimmering sky;/One small boy,/On his grandparents' bed,/ Whispers "goodnight" with a sigh..." And as closes his eyes he's lulled to sleep by a chorus of comforting sounds. The purr of the cat, thump of the dog's tail as he dreams, snore of his grandma, and whistle of his grandpa as they sleep. He hears their pet bird ring the bell in her cage and ruffle her feathers, the gurgle of the old pipes, and the creak of the wooden floor. The hum of the refrigerator and drip of the faucet sing along, as do the hoot of the owl, and the yip of foxes baying at the moon, the cry of the loon and the swish of the leaves in the trees beneath the northern lights. This is the music of the night, a symphony of quiet and reassuring sounds..... Shutta Crum's engaging and eloquent bedtime story is soft and lyrical, and lulls little ones to sleep with its soothing rhythm and lovely, gentle sound effects. Sylvie Daigneault's evocative illustrations swirl around the pages in dreamy subdued greens and blues, and complement the text with a warm and cozy feeling. Perfect for preschoolers, All On A Sleepy Night is a wonderful addition to bedtime reading, and is sure to become an instant family favorite. "Now one small boy,/On his grandparents' bed,/Is asleep and dreaming along;/Under a shimmering sky-/High on a great green hill-/In a little log house that is singing,/Singing its sleepy song."

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEDTIME READ, CRUM's Sleepy Night WILL INTRIGUE INDEED
We all go there as children, parents or grandparents...listening to the lilting sounds of a captivating bedtime book reading. A very special children's author, librarian and youthful grandmother, Shutta Crum fashions a delightfully catching song of all the night sounds in this, her second book.

Beautifully illustrated by Canadian artist Sylvie Daigneault, ALL ON A SLEEPY NIGHT brings alive the sounds a grandchild might imagine. The music of the language in the book will let any adult entertain youngsters from 2 to 10. Every child will be enthralled and fall asleep with night's creaks and groans, hisses and snores, along with pictures of nature's friendly animals dancing in their heads.

The natural richness of Crum's storytelling voice and her poet's touch with words will draw in, hook and hold youngsters. Parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians, and storytellers will find it hard to resist returning to this volume frequently. Nearly a lullaby and yet a whole narrative tune, Crum draws upon her knowing the needs of children, the beauty of the night and the sense of a grandparanet's love in this book.

The illustrations, brilliant and crayon-like, complement Crum's artfully comfortable and soothing way with words. This is a book any youngster might fall to sleep with. Pay attention, this author has several more children's books forthcoming.

4-0 out of 5 stars All on a Sleepy Night
I live in the same town as author , librarian Shutta Crum. Having experienced first hand ,her story time presentations, I knew that when this book came out, that I just had to have it for my three year old granddaughter. We were not disappointed!
The sounds of the night that keep the little boy awake are demystified and made musical by Crum's use of rhyme and onomatopoeia. The illustrations add a comforting effect and encourage discussion of the various contributors of the nightly noises. No furnace monsters here...just loving warmth. It's a fun read aloud story! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A FUN BEDTIME STORY
Rabbits and moles need sleep, too! But, that's not easy for this pair of best friends who live together.

After they've retired for the night Rabbit tosses and turns because the ticking of the clock is keeping him awake. Thoughtful Mole remedies that by stopping the clock. Still no dreamland for Rabbit as now the drip-drip of a drippy faucet is keeping him awake. Mole to the rescue again - he turns off the water.

Still no rest for the weary as then the purring of their red cat keeps Rabbit awake, so good hearted Mole puts the cat downstairs. Wouldn't you know? There's something else keeping Rabbit awake - it's the banging of the garden gate. Of course, Mole braves the cold to secure the garden gate. At last, Rabbit falls fast asleep.

Wouldn't you think that Mole's good deeds would be rewarded? Not at all. Rabbit snores so loudly that Mole can't sleep. Ask your young ones to guess what Mole will do now.

5-0 out of 5 stars First book my daughter "read"
This is the BEST book! My little kindergardener is reading now, and this was the first book she reallly read on her own. Easy and fun to read...will give your children the self-esteem they need to do it on their own. I highly recommend this and the other books in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES
In sam sheep can't sleep he obviously can't sleep so he seeks help from his friends(a continuing theme in the series) and each friend has their own advice and help. Sam does sleep. Pay attention to the yellow duck and see if you see a recurring theme here also!
This whole series is great for all children from 18 months to beginning reading. It rolls when reading to your children the art is whimsical and the stories have some plot and are focused on problem solving together. It is the phonics and the rhyming that you will love, and they are short enough to keep you and your childs attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hurray for Phonics

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Both my five year old and three year old love this book. There are some familiar sleepy animals like bears, horses and dogs, but there are also a few that we don't think about very often like moths, cranes and even crickets. The children find it so interesting to see how other animals sleep and then compare it to how little boys and girls sleep. My kids have a hard time "winding down" at night so this is a good transition for them. They also get to see that EVERYBODY sleeps. Also worth noting is that the images are truly beautiful. And I like the fact that while this book reads like a poem, it doesn't rhyme.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Time For Bed.....
Every living being sleeps, from the bear in his dark cave, fish among the water ferns, and horses standing up switching their tails, to the snowy crane who sleeps standing on just one leg, turtles inside their shells, seals with their flippers against blocks of ice, and of course little boys and girls. Originally published in 1958, Charlotte Zolotow's Sleepy Book is as fresh and wonderful today as it was over 40 years ago. Her simple, gentle text is full of imagery and magic, and complemented by brand new, evocative illustrations. Artist, Stefano Vitale, has really captured the essence of Ms Zolotow's poetry with engaging pictures of sleeping animals in quiet, subdued tones. Together, word and art create a soothing and comforting bedtime story that will lull little ones off to dreamland. "...but little boys/ and girls,/ when the night/ comes/ and the wind/ whispers gently/ in the trees/ and the stars/ sparkle and shine,/ sleep/ warm under/ their blankets/ in their/ beds."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever for children, parents and grandparents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bed Time Book
This book is a great book to read kids before bed time. It's about a girl named Susan as she sleeps in her bed at night. It describes a lot of the things that are going on at the same time in the world like animals in the woods, Johnny playing his saxophone, and a boat on its way to dock. It has the rhythm of a lullabye and is a great nighttime book. I have nothing to add to this book because it's perfect the way it is. So I'm giving it 5-STARS and I recommend you read it, too!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rugrats and the Zombies
Age level 4-8
About: Angelica wants to watch tv but cant because she has a 30 minute a day rule. The show she wanted to watch was about zombies and after discussing zombies with the babies she thought of a plan. Her plan was to scare the babies and waking there parents up really early. So the next morning sure enough the babies wake their parents early, making them look like zombies because there so tired. So now Angelicas staying up late watchin tv but after a while there plan didnt backfired. The parents started to stop giving the babies naps making them tired and now they start to sleep in along with their parents. The babies notice and figure out Angelicas plan. So now Angelica has to play educational games and the babies start to wonder if shes a zombie.
Like: It was a good book, a nice fun kind of a book. i dont think it taught a lesson though.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rugrats and the Zombies
When Angelica wants to watch TV and she can't because of parental limits of 30 minutes. When there is a marathon the hole day. There's going to be trouble. To get to watch TV she tells the babies that parents that sleep in will turn in to Zombies. The babies didn't want the "zombies" to eat them so they start to cry and make some racket to wake them up so they don't change in to Zombies. Now the parents are tired and have droopy eyes and look like zombies. Until the babies find out that Angelica is lying like she does in every book or movie or show. This book is a good book for kids to show that there are different people in the world and some of them do lie.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid children's book.
With the recent release of a Rugrats movie, along with a flooding of Rugrats related merchandise into the market, it is no surprise to see this popular cartoon franchise to branch off into children's books. In The Rugrats and the Zombies, author Sarah Willson does a good job capturing the irreverent humor that has made the cartoon series so popular. The story begins with a frustrated Angelica fuming over the half-hour T.V. restriction that has been placed upon her by her babysitters, the Pickle family. Scheming to get the adults out of her way, she tells Tommy, Chuckie, Lil, and Phil that adults who sleep in late turn into zombies. The babies, worried that their parents will turn to zombies and eat them, in turn begin crying early in the morning to keep their parents from sleeping to late. At this point, the babies tired and groggy parents begin acting more like zombies than they did before, causing some humorous mix-ups to occur. Eventually, the babies get wise to Angelica's lie and, in an ending typical of the T.V. series, foil her plan. In this book, Willson has constructed a story that follows the tradition of the Rugrats cartoons perfectly. Like the show, Willson's book appeals to young children because of the youth and innocence of its main characters. Children identify with the babies fear of zombies, yet they also gain a sense confidence at seeing characters that are less knowledgeable and more gullible than they are. Slightly older children may also tend to identify with Angelica and her endless quest to frighten the babies. The humor in this book is also direct from the T.V. show. Many of the laughs come courtesy of the exhausted parents and their crazy hijinks. There are also the standard baby-mispronounces-word jokes. Willson's humor in this story is directed at a broad age group. Older children will laugh at Angelica's scheme or at the parents goofy acts, but younger children will laugh at the babies fear and the silly pictures. In fact, much of the humor comes via the illustrations. Barry Goldberg snuck in quite a few site gags, including a women wearing a tie, a man buttering a newspaper, and a cup of tongue depressors in the doctor's office labeled, "AH STICKS". The pictures themselves are colorful and easy to look at. Unlike some other books, the illustrations cover the entire page, with the words set inconspicuously out of the way. The writing itself fits this age group perfectly. Sentences are short and to the point, and their are only a few words that may give a first or second grader trouble. The plot moves along in a logical and organized fashion, and the dialogue manages to fit all the characters without being too complex for younger readers. The story also gives a good lesson about to young children about the dangers of lying. Due to the excellent combination of well drawn illustrations and a humorous, well thought-out story, The Rugrats and the Zombies will appeal to both very young kids and accomplished readers. It also makes a very good bedtime story book for parents to read to kids. Between Willson's humor and Goldberg's drawings, kids will be reading this book over and over again.
