5-0 out of 5 stars Kitty Princess
This delightfully animated spin on the traditional Cinderella tale stars a rude and arrogant Kitty Princess as its main character. She is a great contrast to the traditional Cinderella who is typically presented as kind, generous, and loving. This tale is told from the point of view of Kitty's Fairy Godmouse who becomes fed up with her mistreatment and lets Kitty fend for herself while preparing for Prince Quince's ball. As can be expected, the results fall far short of Kitty's expectations and she must deal with the consequences of her actions. The ending is unexpected as the focus remains on Kitty Princess while Prince Quince has a lesson of his own to learn.

The story focuses on Kitty Princess and her dynamic character transformation. The reader becomes appalled at Kitty's mistreatmnet of others while anxious to find out how her lesson is learned. During her solitary journey, she travels from store to store demanding shoes, jewelry, and a gown for Prince Quince's ball. When the shop owners attempt to fill her requests, she is greatly disappointed. She recognizes the error of her ways and discovers disrespect and rudeness do not serve her well. She resolves to treat others in a more kind and less demanding way. Kitty becomes a credible character as young children will identify with wanting their own way immediately but resolving to do better in the future.

Young children will delight in the journey Kitty takes. Children in middle elementary grades will enjoy a different take on the Cinderella story which focuses less on how to impress the prince and more on how to treat all people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crankiness has never been so stylish!
There are numerous refreshing aspects to this tale of fashion, community, appreciation, and a stubborn little kitty princess. Expressed through a vivid and textured Japanese motif, Princess Kitty is laying down the high demands in anticipation of a royal ball. What little princess wouldn't want to be the most glorious geisha of the bunch? Its the witty dialogue that drives this story to supremacy. (The narrator is Kitty's frustrated fairy mouse.)
This tale is great to read aloud to kids and even adult peers. You will get a sugar high off of the fabulous illustrations alone. Get this for your favorite little princess and/or the princess that's within. ... Read more

Book Description

As far as Ginny Mae is concerned, her dog--Ol' Red--has got it made. He eats with his mouth open....and doesn't get yelled at. He runs around barefoot....and doesn't get yelled at. He leaves his stuff wherever he wants....and doesn't get yelled at. And he never, ever has to say please. So one day, Ginny Mae decides to join him. And what follows is a hilarious take on a dog's life--from a little girl's point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids and adults!
I read this book at a house to children I was babysitting for. The children and I both found the book to be quite funny and requested multiple readings. I was more than happy to read this book again for them. It is a great book and I am going to order it for my neice for her birthday!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets the point across without moralizing
Ginnie Mae's got a tough life. Her ma's picky about things like saying please and wearing shoes. Her little brother, Jack, is so perfect "he ha[s] a little halo over his head." Her dog, Ol' Red, seems to have things a lot easier. "My dog never says 'please,'" muses Ginnie Mae, "and no one thinks a thing about it." Finally, after a night of being told to mind her manners, eat like a lady, clean her room, and put on her shoes, Ginnie Mae declares she'd rather be a dog. Humored by her parents, she moves in with Ol' Red, to a life of treeing cats, digging holes, sleeping in the doghouse, and begging for scraps. "Ol' Red's real good about sharing. . . I think he's even given me some of his fleas."

Kibbles can't compare to her ma's cooking, however, and when it starts to rain, Ginnie Mae starts to reconsider her care-free lifestyle. "Pa says I can go back to being myself anytime I've a mind to. So maybe I'll just saunter on in and wash up for supper," she decides.

This story has some great comic moments that make my four-year-old laugh out loud, and even bring a smile to his oh-so-sophisticated six-year-old sister's face. I like the fact that even though the story is told through Ginnie Mae's voice, Ma and Pa are presented as perfectly reasonable parents. More importantly, the author, Suzanne Williams, lets the story play to it's logical outcome without moralizing. She allows her readers to draw for themselves the conclusion that good manners are a fair trade-off for the blessings of civilization. Tedd Arnold's illustrations are priceless, adding wry humor to an already amusing story. He gives us Ginnie Mae at the dinner table, the food flying everywhere, and Ginnie Mae and Ol' Red sitting side by side on their haunches, scratching at fleas. Funniest of all is the teeth-baring grin Ginnie Mae gives her annoying little brother at the end of the book, and his startled reaction to it. ... Read more

Book Description

Sukie is worried -- her parents are acting strange. When she runs in the house, her dad asks, "If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump off a bridge too?" When she eats peas with her fingers, Mom yells, "You'll put an eye out with that thing!"

What is going on? Have her parents been replaced by aliens? Are they robots with broken circuits? She and her older brothers decide to investigate. And what they discover leads to a kids-against-parents WAR!

This very funny book casts a new light on family rules. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a enjoyable story for young readers
Something is definitely wrong in the Robinson household. Mom and Dad's responses to the children's misbehavior are completely unrelated to their actions. For example, when Sukie kicks her brother Brian, her mother responds, "Waste not, want not." Another time Sukie is running through the living room with glitter in her hand. When the glitter spills, her father's response is, "If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump off a bridge too?"

Sukie talks to her brothers about these bizarre occurrences. They are determined to learn why their parents are acting so strangely and decide that they must be bad on purpose in order to gather evidence. After overhearing their parents talking, the kids finally understand what's going on. This leads to a kids-against-parents WAR.

Who exactly will win the war of the words --- the children or the adults? You will have to read SAY WHAT? to find out.

The jokes in this book go on a little too long, but young readers will enjoy the humorous situations and detailed pencil drawings. SAY WHAT? is an easy read for those children just making the transition to chapter books.

Great book! Very funny and cute. Story Line:
Sukie, Reed, and Brian are confused. Their parents are saying weird things, normal parent-speaks, but at the wrong time! The kids find out that Mom and Dad got the idea from a magazine. It's supposed to turn children into sweet angels wanting their parents to tell them to do a chore. The kids aren't happy about it and decide that this means war! They do the same thing back, Sukie spills her milk and when Mom says 'No, you can't have a snack, dinner is in 5 minutes.' Sukie says 'Reed had more than me.' Hilarious! A short book, but funny, none the less. ... Read more

Book Description

Last fall's popular Bertie is back and has everyone passing gas (and laughs).

Bertie likes to make smells, and everyone in his family keeps chastising him: "Pee-ew! Is that you, Bertie?" But Bertie knows he's not the only one who passes gas.

Children love stories with gross subjects and this funny book should be no exception. The refrain "Pee-ew! Is that you, Bertie?" will quickly catch on with kids when the book is read aloud. And like the New York Times best-selling Walter the Farting Dog and the popular books Everyone Poops and The Holes in Your Nose, this one will not only appeal to children but to adults as well. AUTHOR BIO: David Roberts has illustrated several offbeat children's books, including Abrams' Cinderella: An Art Deco Love Story, and Rapunzel: A Groovy Fairy Tale, and was runner-up for the prestigious 1999 Mother Goose Award for children's illustration. David lives and works in London.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Cute but not as good as other Bearenstain Bear books. It doesn't really teach about controlling the gimmies. Instead of teaching kids that it's simply not acceptable to get a treat every single time they go somewhere, the solution is to let them get just one treat each time. Not very practicle in my opinon. Also, like another reviewer stated, it would have been nice if at the end Brother and Sister bear hadn't been so condesending to another little cub with the gimmies. Still, it's not a completely bad book to add to your little cubs book collection!

3-0 out of 5 stars Get The Gimmies
Does your child want everything in sight and cries and throws a fit if he or she doesn't get what they want? If so, this is the book for you to read to your child. It also teaches you, the adult, a way to take care of the "galloping gimmies."
It all starts when Sister bear and Brother bear go to the store with their parents. Sister and Brother want everything in sight and throw fits. This is so embarrassing to mama and papa bear so they kept buying things when their cubs throw fits. Big mistake! Now Brother and Sister were spoiled brats and Mama and Papa had to think of a way to solve this problem. That's when Granny and Gramps come over and tell a story about Papa bear when he was younger. Turns out he had the Gimmes too and they had figured out a way to solve it.
I think this story is great for youngsters and adults. It teaches children how to compromise with their parents and teaches the parents ways to stop their children from wanting everything and throwing fits. It also is full of fun just like all books by Stan and Jan Berenstain. Also if your looking for other books like this one, that teaches valuable lessons, you might want to check out some of the other books by these two marvelous writers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stops those meltdowns cold!
I would like to express my gratitude to the Berenstains for giving me the perfect antidote to my children's rampant greediness in stores. When my oldest daughter was three she began to be very demanding in stores. If I gave in I felt like a wimp and if I didn't she would disolve into tears (or worse). One day I picked up this book and it taught us both some valuable lessons. I learned to let her know beforehand if she can pick out a little something, and she learned just how unattractive tantrums look to outsiders and why it is wrong to demand everything in sight. Now if she starts to get whiney in a store I just tell her in a nice way to watch out--she's getting the gimmies, and she knows exactly what I mean. It sounds a lot kinder, too, than, "You're a greedy brat." I look forward to reading it to her younger sister who is just about to enter that stage!

4-0 out of 5 stars doesn't live up to Berenstain Bear standards but good
The book of Berenstain Bears get the gimmies is about the two berenstain children want everything that there is. The parents of the children are fed up with it and tell the children to go upstairs in thier room when gramdma and gramdpa come. When the grandparents ask why the children have been put upstairs then the parents tell them that the children have a bad case of the gimmies. The grandparents tell the dad that he did too and that they limited what they buy to one a day or else they get nothing and that is what the parents did to stop the kids from getting the kids from getting everything. A good story to tell your kids, I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good message, mostly, but with some flaws
I preface this by saying that my children (5 and 3) love the Berenstain Bears, and this title is no exception. The overall message is good: people who want everything will never be satisfied. The main underlying message is good too: parents get *awfully* annoyed at being nagged for goodies. The plan the parents implement with the help of the grandbears, and the enthusiasm of the cubs works well for them. A similar version works well for my family too.

My only objection is the "superiority" the cubs seem to feel and don't hesitate to express about other "greedy cubs" after they have learned some control over their own greed. They parrot the parents when they see a cub throwing a tantrum and discuss how "embarrassing and awful" that behaviour is. Too bad. I'd rather see the cubs feel empathy for another, to understand how very similar they are to the others, even if they are currently displaying exemplary behaviour. ... Read more

That is why, on one of Theo's naughtiest, grabbiest, mouthiest days, Grandmother decides to bake him a pie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A charming tale, beautifully illustrated!
A winning combination - a marvelous, imaginative, and funny story that teaches a lesson, together with stunning illustrations. A wonderful book to read aloud with your children or grandchildren on your lap. They'll want to hear it again and again. A fun read for adults, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Once in a great while, a book like this comes along...
A truly imaginative and enchanting tale. Great fun to read aloud and linger over the illustrations. You can't go wrong with a great story matched by amazing illustrations with a little sprinkle of morality. This is one of the classics that children will remember for a long time to come, as I remember Dr. Seuss and Where the Wild Things Are.

This book is a rarity: a story with a moral that's fun (and funny!) for 21st century kids and their parents to read over and over again. Wonderful pictures, too -- the great Stephen Gammell's best. And you know what? I think it really works! I'll be darned if my own little Theos (...) aren't just little more considerate since they got a taste of Humble Pie!

4-0 out of 5 stars Down with the Rules
Nicole Rubel's wonderfully twisted sense of humor and amazing illustrations will bring laughter to everyone who ever wanted to break free of adult rules on proper behavior. If you are, or ever were, a child who wanted to fly in the face of convention, and who of us hasn't, then do yourself a favor and pick up this book. The illustrations more than double the fun. You will find yourself wanting to savor every detail. Loved the book. If you want a laugh, you will too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grody's lessons teaches kids values
Nicole has come up with another winner in her series of children books. In "Grody's Not So Golden Rules", values important for children to learn are presented in counter-example. By seeing the results of making poor value decisions, kids learn, as Grody learns, the true benefit of "golden rules". Written in an easy to read format and richly illustrated with Nicole's own unique style of artistry, this book can be enjoyed by a wide range of children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grody's not so Golden Rules
Nicole Rubel once again displays her artistry and humor with Grody's not so Goden Rules. Grody is every parent's worst nightmare. Tired of his parents and sister constantly telling him what to do, he puts together his own "rules" and reaps what he has sewn with hilarious and apt results.
Thankfully, his last rule is not to follow his rules. Grody learns his lesson and readers will laugh and learn with him.
Rubel ventures into a new realm artistically with Grody. She uses ink, markers, colored pencils, watercolors and strategic splashes of collage. The result is wonderful, with each page a treasure hunt to find the various collage pieces. My personal favorites are the orange fuzzy slippers. With this book, Nicole Rubel offers children and parents a visual bouquet and a zany new character to love. Grody is a hit.

He brays and stamps his hooves when he doesn't get his way, makes rude noises through his nose, and sticks out his big red mule tongue. But our young narrator is very calm, patient, and always firm. Without good manners there will be no fun, and soon he wins over his belligerent guest..... Ms Edwards' gentle and engaging text is complemented by Barbara Nascimbeni's bold, bright, and expressive illustrations, filled with lots of humorous detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Rude Mule is a fun-filled, interactive story that is sure to teach little ones the value of good manners in a clever and captivating way. ... Read more

Toestomper is the kind of big, ugly bully kids run and hide from, andhis lowlife friends, the Rowdy Ruffians, are no better. So what happens when a bunch of darling baby caterpillars start following Toestomper around asking for help?

Finding their big-eyed pleas almost impossible to resist, Toestomper is captivated by the caterpillars' furry helplessness. What's more, after he moves them into his own house and begins taking care of them, he no longer feels quite so lonely and mean. Of course, all this wreaks havoc in his former criminal community. His nasty animal friends--Barfy, Nightmare, and Basher--refuse to accept this angelic transformation in their previous mate-in-mahem. "Toestomper isn't any fun anymore," complains Basher. "All he cares about is those dumb caterpillars."

Rooting for the good guy is one thing children love to do, and in this perceptive tale of transformation, readers will find their hearts warming towards Toestomper as he finally realizes that life is much more rewarding when you help people instead of hurt them. Richly illustrated in a detailed airbrush style, Sharleen Collicott has created a delightful collection of unique characters, from the winsome blue caterpillars to the tough, cynical gang members. An enjoyable, funny tale. (Ages 3 to 7) --Marianne Painter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!
The story is so very sweet, this big bad bully became a warm wonderful caretaker. Tha Art in the book is so cute. You just love O'Toestomper! Under all that Bad Guy stuff he is a real lover. Good job! We loved it. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pay no attention to that ranter behind the curtain!
I read this one to my approaching-40 husband, the closest I come to a child. He thought it was fun. Asked for a message, he came up with: "It's okay to change. It's okay to stand up for the people you love." It seems to me that getting into questionable situations is how you learn/teach your children to make good choices. Pay no attention to the ranter behind the curtain. The illustrations are very expressive too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toestomper Rules!
My 3 year old "discovered" this book after I heard about it on NPR. After previewing it at the library it was at the top of his Christmas list. Ever since, we read it daily with him demanding that I "do the voices". For parents who like to dramatize their readings, this book is a treasure. Colorful characters and excellent illustrations bring a funny tale of a tough guy who finds his soft side and learns to be a friend to smaller animals. Others may question the look and attitude of Toestomper and his cohorts, but I judge books by the reaction of my child. We've read it at least 50 times and so far the only change in his behaviour I've seen is that when he sees smaller children or little animals he says "We should be nice to them...like Toestomper."

1-0 out of 5 stars Story is unworthy of purchase.Do not eat food that moves.
Toestomper represents the qualities that most of us find unacceptable in society's members - young and old alike. Speaking in bulling terms, inflicting violence on creatures different than yourself does not enhance the reading of this to children. Many of us spend a lot time teaching our young auidence that words such as dumb, stupid are unacceptable...so why would we share a book with these words appearing on many of the pages? Children's literature often gives lessons for how to live and what is acceptable in society. This book is lacking not only in a positive storyline for a young auidence, but the illustrations of Toestomper wearing alternative lifestyle clothing with gothic overtones is offensive as well. Story line is dis-jointed, illustrations are offensive and the lasting value of this work is questionalbe. If the author's intent was to be humorous, it fails. If the author's intent was to teach a lesson, it fails. It does suceede in offending.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun book
Ah, pooh to the complaints about the cheating. It's a great lesson on compassion and a real fun read. Not heavy handed. My kids love it almost as much as Scott Simon and Daniel Pinkwater did on NPR's Weekend Edition. The pure joy they showed when reading it on the show sold me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun
Children will grin as they recognize themselves in these pages. Parents will nod knowingly. Kids and grown-ups will laugh together as they read this fun book that takes a light-hearted look at the claims and complaints that children often make about cleaning their rooms, wearing boots, going to bed, and so on. Book Description

George likes lots of things-reading, watching TV, and painting pictures. The only thing is, he likes to do them upside down. Which isn't a problem, for him. It's more of a problem for his parents, his teacher, his tutor, the school nurse, and the principal-to name a few. Finally a meeting is called in the principal's office while George waits (upside down) outside. But what's taking so long? George peeks in and he can hardly believe his eyes. Everyone is upside down! Suddenly being upside down doesn't seem so cool anymore. What's George to do?

Combining Life Saver-bright colors with an appealingly quirky story, Meghan McCarthy somersaults into children's books with this captivating picture book debut.

5-0 out of 5 stars George, George, George
The bad news is my children now think it's great fun to imitate George, and to hang upside down from various fixtures and pieces of furniture. The good news is that we can't help but laugh. George's story is silly, sweet and a delight to share with young readers.

The illustrations are fabulous. Even my two year old is engrossed by McCarthy's bold drawings. It makes for a great read aloud to groups of kids, since the pictures can be enjoyed from a bit of a distance. This would make for some great comic relief in the classroom -just set the ground rules first, no hanging upside down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vibrant, witty, and charming!
George is lovable, and the artwork is bold and imaginative. Definitely a book kids will want read again and again.

SO much fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for George
I'm a teacher and a parent, and this book is a hit at school and at home. George Upside Down is certainly one of the best stories of 2003.

My kids adore the bright pictures and humorous story. George is a wonderful book -- read right side up and even upside down as my kids have tried!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perspective is everything...
What a joyous, fun book! A book that can be read over and over, without losing it's humor or appeal, which is good, because I'd predict it's constant demand. George is such an affable character, and the pictures, well, just make you want to smile throught out. We love George at our house!

5-0 out of 5 stars cute story, great illustrations
Unlike some of the other picture books out, kids can really relate to this one. Who doesn't know a child who didn't have some obsessive quirk that only lasted a short time? Kids and grown ups will enjoy this one - for it's fun, easy to relate to story and bold illustrations that really draw you into the pages. ... Read more
