Book Description

What an event! What a show! It's catchy and quirky. Tuneful and toe-tapping. Exuberant, unexpected, and utterly endearing. It's what happens when you take America's beloved illustrator and children's author and combine her buoyant genius with some of the most talented people on the stage--presenting Philadelphia Chickens!

Created by Sandra Boynton, Philadelphia Chickens is a family musical in a book, bringing together a full-color songbook of 17 1/2 illustrated story-poems with a full-length, fully orchestrated CD of original songs performed by the likes of Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, and Laura Linney, who pleads "Please, Can I Keep It?"--it followed me home. / What exactly it is,/ I don't know. Also joining in are Eric Stoltz, Natasha Richardson, Scott Bakula, and two Boyntons, including daughter Caitlin McEwan, who performs a piece that every little listener will relate to--a love song to the chocolate chip cookies that are just out of reach. With the collaboration of composer Michael Ford (known to Boynton fans from Rhinoceros Tap), Philadelphia Chickens is that rarest of kids' musical discs--one whose inimitable lyrics and music make it as sing-along, dance-along, cluck-along for parents as it is for their children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING FOR ALL AGES
My 2 year old loves this CD and accompanying book, and truthfully so do I. The songs sound like a broadway production, but are made to be clever and entertaining for young children. I had to buy two, one for home and one for the car. When my 2 year old says "Cow Song" I know just what she's looking for. And she has to hear it over and over again. The songs are adorable and the lyrics are easy to follow. You can't help but sing along. I like the fun diversity of the song topics. My husband and I find ourselves singing the songs even when the CD is not playing. I think any child would enjoy this CD as it is a wonderful departure from the old standard music. It is enjoyable for all ages. We all love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh what fun!
We absolutely love this book and CD! My nine-month old son thinks that it is the best thing since sliced bananas! We bought it for a road trip when he was five-months old and we have been dancing and singing ever since. If this becomes a traveling musical, we are there. My husband and myself find ourselves singing and dancing along while our son enjoys the show from his high chair. He has his favorites, "Cows", "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Pajama Time" but truly loves the entire CD. Sandra Boynton has always been a favorite of ours, with her whimsical cards and books, but this takes the cake. She and Michael Ford, as well as the performers, have created a masterpiece to be enjoyed by all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one deserves 10 stars!
This is by far the best music CD for children that we have! We use CD's in the car frequently as we take long trips to vist relatives (7 hrs. plus). There are no boring lullabys here, or music that will zone you out while driving! It is such a fun CD - parents will find themselves singing along, and (I admit it) may even play it with no kids in the car!

Toe tapping, car dancing fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is no glorble snop!
What a wonderful gift we received for our one-year old ... "Philadelphia Chickens" is fantastic!

Presented as an "Imaginary Musical Revue," this book and accompanying CD are wonderfully written, illustrated and "directed" by Sandra Boynton. I assure you, I am going to look for everything else she has done.

Our son loves the high-energy songs, while my wife and I are halfway to learning all of the lyrics ... our favorites so far (yes, all of them, but standouts include) "Busybusybusy" by Kevin Kline; "Nobody Understands me" by the marvelous (and queckery bifflicious) Meryl Streep; and "Faraway Cookies" is adorably sweet ...

You can see kids really being able to relate to these songs. They are very well written, and the music, in most cases, is just as fun as the lyrics. In the short time that we have had this, it has won over the main spot on our playlists.

As the cover says, it's fun "for all ages (except 43)".

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Song a Favorite!
We were given this as a gift for my daughters (4, 2, 8 months). We listen to it at home and in the car, and at literally every song one or both of the older girls will say "this one is my favorite". So many kids albums seem almost like parent torture, especially in the car. This isn't one of them. The songs are fun for every family member and very singable. ... Read more

Book Description

Redesigned. Reformatted. Remastered. Resequenced. Ready for Re-release. And it was already great to begin with!

Before there was Philadelphia Chickens, the #1 New York Times and Publishers Weekly children's bestseller with 319,000 copies in print, there was Rhinoceros Tap, the collection of seriously silly songs. Now Rhinoceros Tap returns in an all-new package to mirror Philadephia Chickens, with a spiffy audio CD. Written and illustrated by Sandra Boynton--whose books have over 6 million copies in print--and with music by Boynton and Michael Ford, the same team that created Philadelphia Chickens, it's a read-along, sing-along, dance-along, oink-along collection of truly delightful children's music. There's "O, Lonely Peas," to appeal to the finicky young eater. The five-year-old's lament, "Bad Babies" ("They whine and they bite, they chew on your toys/And oh, do they make the most terrible noise"). "Tickle Time." "The Crabby Song." A mouse's impassioned ballad to his beloved, "I Love You More Than Cheese." And "Barnyard Dance," the song that was launched by the board book dear to the hearts of more than a million young readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for LONG Rides with kids in the Car
Sandra Boynton's book and cassette not only have the kids singing but my husband and I find ourselves humming the tunes too! We were facing a nine and eight hour car trips with three kids (3, 2 and 3 weeks) and this made the trip go FASTER! The tunes and words are catchy and easy to sing along with. Some of the songs are from Boynton's other books, like"Barnyard Dance". Others became new favorites to us; Oh Lonely Peas and Bad Babies. Unlike other kid cassettes we have, this creation is done perfectly! Kids and their parents can both enjoy the humor, music and cleverness of Boynton and Ford. This became the only tape played in our car whenever we went anywhere, in fact we played the tape so much from August to October we wore it out. I'm buying another set today!

4-0 out of 5 stars rhinoceros tap
This tap will make a long journey shorter with little ones in the car. The tunes makes a change from the usual nursery rthyms that we endure in the car. The music is funky. The songs are funny and easy to learn. It is the only tape my husband will have in HIS car. Occasionally I find him tapping his toe to the music. The book helped me learn of the words and when my daughter is older I am sure she will enjoy reading it too. At 2 years she is still a little young to even appreciate the graphics. Our favourite tune is "Tickle Time". When the whole family joins in we usually end up on the floor laughing. This tape will always remind me of my family having a great time together. It does not fail to put a smile on my daughters face.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for kids AND parents!
Rhinoceros Tap is far and away the best tape/book I've seen in recent years. The songs are fun without making parents crazy. In fact, we all like to sing along. The only complaint I had was that the songs are pitched a little too low for children to sing comfortably. The tape is well done and the book is wonderful! One half is simply words and illustrations and the other half is the actual sheet music! WOW! I can't say enough about this set. It is definitely worth the price and the wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Tapping Songs, Let's Hit It!
My 33-month toddler has outgrown his nursery ryhmes. If you have an active toddler who has a sense of humor, you may want to try this out. His favourite tunes are definitely "Tickle Time", "Lonely Peas" and "Rhinoceros Tap", but most of all, he enjoys all the songs, including "Turkey Love", "So Long, Doggies" and he will shout at "Horns to Toes" etc.

Catchy tunes, witty words, funny creatures with really fun songs, my son's rhythm tapping is getting pretty steady. Though it's a bit more to pay for this audio book (as per our currency exchange), I couldn't find any other children's songs as creative as this ONE! See the way my son tapped along with the songs, I knew Sandra Boynton had it all!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Fun !
I wondered much while ordering "Rhinoceros Tap" , as my 3 years old boy doesn't know English and this was expected to be his first sing & song book. But now I think that it was the best choice I could have done for the beginning. My boy liked it very much. It's really funny for parents too. Sometimes I listen to the songs when my boy isn't at home. He likes the animals singing, he likes to dance with them and we mostly sing and dance together. I recommend this book to parents all over the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars De Colores and Other Latin-American Folk Songs for Children
I teach conversational Spanish to elementary school children and was looking for a songbook to make class more interesting. I kept coming across this book so I ordered it. I received it yesterday and fell in love with it. I immediately sat at the piano and started playing every song. The book is beautifully illustrated and the songs are easy to learn. I also liked that the lyrics were in English also. I recommend this book highly. In fact, I'm ordering the audio today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs to pass on to our kids!
My daughter LOVES to sing and this book was music to her little ears! I was surprised to see so many familiar songs in spanish, it brought back lots of memories of growing up. I was amazed at the diversity of songs from various spanish-speaking countries. These songs and their origins are a MUST to pass on to our children and future generations. I wish there was music that could accompany this awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Diez Deditos
The author, Jose Luis Orozco, is a bilingual educator/singer who keeps English-speaking and Spanish-speaking children interested throughout his books and accompanying music. As a substitute teacher, I have used his books and tapes extensively in elementary school classes over the years. I have had the privilege of attending his concerts at elementary schools several times and have thoroughly enjoyed his work.

I recommend the two books authored by Jose Luis Orozco, that I have purchased and read many times with students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Spanish starter
I bought this book & the accompanying CD. To be honest, I don't use the book to sing along with the CD as much as I thought I would. But...when I do, it is great. There are wonderful, colorful pictures, English & Spanish words to every song, and an explanation of the origin/tradition of the song. Lots of fun, I hope my 15 month old is absorbing some of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with the album, not so great by itself.
I got the book and the music album together and I absolutely love them. The book makes the music a lot more meaningful-- even if you know enough Spanish to understand the music, the book is still useful to show you finger-plays and dances to go along with it. However, I wouldn't have gotten much out of the book by itself. Unless you are really good at reading music, get the album too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book from infants to preschoolers
This is a great book that both my kids love. I also got the CD that goes with it. The illustrations are very interesting and filled with details. If you can read music you can also play the songs along. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!! Yes, buy the music too!!!!
My husband and I bought the book and CD to accompany it. Fabulous! The book's illustrations are rich and vibrant, with lyrics, with music, and hand signs too! Both of our daughters (3yo and 1 yo) LOVE the music and follow along with the book making the hand/body motions. It is the kind of children's music that is gentle and enjoyable to the adult ear. Great family fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remembering my youth
I was very happy to find this book. It brought back memories of growing up in a bilingual eniviroment. For many years I searched for such a book. I finally have a book with which I can share my heritage with my family and friends. Thank you Ms.Delacre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
This unique bilingual nursury rhyme and music book, provides to the Hispanic mother what so many Mother Goose Rhyme books provide to the American mother: an excuse to cuddle with her child and share the dear folklore she grew up with. The fact that this is a collection in picture book format makes a great difference. It lends itself to share in one sitting. After several readings with a parent, the child will start to sing the songs by himself as soon as he sees the pictures. The illustrations depict real places troughout Latin America. In the 11 years I've used this book both outside and inside the classroom, with Latino children and non-Latino children as well, I've witnessed time and again the joy it brings to Hispanic parents and children. I've seen how Latinas spontaneously start singing the songs by flipping through the pages of the book and instantly feel compelled to share their forgotten folklore with their children. I've seen three generations of a family take out a guitar and play the songs in the middle of their kitchen. I've seen the pride of Latino children when they join hands with their classmates to play the game-song of arroz con leche and feel acceptance and respect in doing so. This is a book that brings out the best in people, and stands entirely on its own. It is a book that should be in every Spanish language or bilingual collection of a school. It is a classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars get real bilingual singers!
I grew up speaking both Spanish and English in NYC, and wanted to share some of the songs I grew up with, with my newborn daughter. I am going to throw this cassette out to ensure she does not pronounce Spanish like a she learned it in high school. A truly wonderful bilingual CD/tape is De Colores by Orozco. His book by the same title is also wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A savory taste of Latin American "canticos"
"Arroz Con Leche" is an enchanting book filled with songs and rhymes that are heard throughout Latin America. They bring nostalgia to Latino readers and give non-latino readers the sense of passion and joy the Latin American culture is filled with. These are typical verses that most Latin American children are conforted with in their sleep, sung about in the streets as they play, or whispered gently into their ears as they are rocked in their mother's arms. This book has been extremely special in our family, since as a child my siblings and I have been nurtured with these songs and rhymes. Having the book to share with the next generation is such a wonderful experience because the tradition of these songs can continue on even if we are not in our native land. The pictures are just so vivid; I can see my uncle with his straw hat sitting in the bench next to the little neighborhood market just how the book shows it. The colors used and the situations depicted are true to the Latin American culture. All the components of the book are so spectacular that I'm not sure how to distinguish which is my favorite; the songs which are both in english and spanish (I think that is so helpful, especially for those who do not speak spanish but who would like to expose their children to the Latin American culture), the enchanting pictures that go along with the event in the song/rhyme, or the musical notes that accomany the songs in the back of the book. It's fun to be able to play the guitar or piano along with the songs because it brings them to life and makes them much more fanciful. I have not found a Latin American children's book of songs so complete and entertaining as this one has been. All of Lulu Delacre's Latin American children's folksongs and tales are so magnificant, I have presented them to my Children's Literature class in college and those students with children were so impressed with it that many of them went out and bought them for their own children. If you are seeking typical Latin American children's folksongs, you should with no doubt get this book, it will fill you and your child with so much joy that you will want to go out and get Delacre's other Latin American children's books. I recommend this book to the young and the old, it will charm everyone!

3-0 out of 5 stars The book alone ...
If you take the book on its own (apart from any accompanying audiotape), you will find a cute text and fair translations from Spanish to English. As an introduction to some of the common rhymes and songs, the book serves well and has attractive illustration. There are other books of this type you might enjoy more, particularly if you wish to use the book in a classroom setting. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific song book for fans and beginning pianists!
I was very pleased with this songbook. My family enjoys Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and I was happy to find this book so I could play the songs at home. The arrangements are easy enough for a very beginning pianist to play and still sound good; yet a more accomplished improviser could easily embellish on the notes provided. The book contains quite a number of songs, so the musician and fan alike can find plenty of his or her favorites. We recommend the book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Children's Songs
This is a wonderful collection of children's songs. Set for Easy Piano, there is still sufficient information in the transposition to give a decently full-bodied sound for familiar favorites, but also playable by children and for children. There are many Disney and Sesame Street songs, but the book also carries familar television themes and folk songs. It is just good fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not just for kids!
As an adult who wanted to learn how to play the recorder, I wasn't sure how (or where) begin. This book is set up from very easy tunes to increasingly difficult (although it never gets too hard.) If a tune involves a new technique (examples: new time signatures, sharps and flats, etc.) the author explains these new things simply and to the point. The best thing about this book is that there are a variety of songs, most of which are recognizable (some Xmas tunes, classical pieces, folk songs, etc.) I wish there were more exercises to increase your technique, but that's being picky. I would recommend this book to both children and adults. ... Read more

Book Description

A compendium of favorite camp songs for all ages to enjoy.

Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh,
Here I am at Camp Granada.
Camp is very entertaining.
And they say we’ll have some fun
if it stops raining.

The mosquitoes are out and biting, the rain’s coming down in buckets, and there’s poison ivy on the trail. We’re a long way from home and the food here stinks!

Camp wouldn’t be camp without troubles to share. But there are also new friends to make, adventurous trails to be climbed, and toasty evenings by the fire to enjoy (not to mention a fair bit of silliness).

Classic camp-song favorites—from “Rise and Shine” and “Found a Peanut” to “Kum Ba Yah”—and vibrant, folksy illustrations make this offering a musical walk through the campgrounds for generations to treasure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but not complete
Although this book is definitely a lot of fun (and a great companion to the movie "Really Rosie") please note that it does not include all of the original illustrations from the Nutshell books. Each Nutshell book is condensed down to a few pages in this compilation.

For toddlers, alligators all around is much more fun on 52 pages than on one page.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's a script, not a book.
Decided to purchase this based on my love of the Nutshell Kids segments in the Scholastic Video Series and rave reviews by others of Really Rosie. It was not what I expected. It is perfect if you want to put on a production of Really Rosie. It's also perfect if want the sheet music for the musical numbers. But if you want to read Pierre, Alligators All Around, One Was Johnny, and Chicken Soup With Rice in book form, I highly recommend the box set on offer; my 3-year-old loves them.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Really Rosie...And I'm Rosie Real...
Really Rosie was, without a doubt, my favorite character growing up. I knew all the songs, and wore out the record. I finally bought another copy two years ago when I was hunting for the perfect gift for a friend's 5-year-old daughter, and I still knew all the words! This spunky heroine is a great example for any shy young girl - she's imaginative, creative, confident and a leader. And don't we need more of that nowadays from young women!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best...
This is a truly wonderful book. I worked in a day care for 15 years. We had movie day every Wed. This was one of the kids all time favorites favorite movies. And the book is just as great. Definitly one of my favorites. Right there next to "Where The Wild Things Are".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book. I recommend getting the audio tape as well.
I grew up listening to Really Rosie (by Carol King) and following along in this book. I'm 32 now and still like to sing the songs with my family, when we get together. It's a great way to get children interested in creating highly imaginative situations and promotes group entertainment among a diverse age range. ... Read more

Book Description

To ev'rything
there is a season
and a time
for ev'ry purpose
under heaven.

For thousands of years Ecclesiastes' beautiful words have inspired and given solace to people all over the world.

Pete Seeger was so moved by these words that he set the psalm to music and added a refrain and a line of his own. "Turn! Turn! Turn!" was recorded in 1962 by the Byrds. You can still hear the song on the radio today -- more than forty years later.

Now Wendy Anderson Halperin lends her talent and artistic vision to the famous song, creating a book like no other. Wendy's art invites you to turn, turn, turn the pages and investigate all the different ways people live and laugh, love and mourn, and the ways in which war and peace affect humanity.

It's your turn now, to read the words of Ecclesiastes, listen to Pete Seeger's music, gaze at Wendy Anderson Halperin's illustrations, and contemplate what being human is all about. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good selection of popular songs
This is a good selection of songs. Some of the songs are traditional, but many are more recent songs from musicals, TV and movies. I remember a lot of these songs from watching Sesame Street growing up. The accompaniment varies in difficulty. The book is hard to keep open on a music stand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Big Book of Children's Songs
All children love to sing! My two girls and I, ages 5 and 2, enjoy sitting at the piano singing songs from The Great Big Book of Children's Songs. Great melody introductions and easy playing. Great tool in bonding relationships with young children.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Great Big Book of Children's Songs

This curious little picture book sets out to accomplish the odd--butsurprisingly worthwhile--task of assembling some classic Rodgers & Hammersteinlyrics into a kid-friendly, sing-along format.

Getting to Know You! samples songs from some of the Broadway duo'sbetter-known musicals (Oklahoma! , Carousel, South Pacific, and The King and I), acting them out with a cast of cute animalsplayfully illustrated by Rosemary Wells (Max's Bath, etc.). You mightneed to hit the video store to recall the tune to a few of these (likeOklahoma!'s "Farmer and the Cowman"), but most of the 16 songs--from "Oh,What a Beautiful Mornin'" to "Some Enchanted Evening"--should be memorableenough to get you singing within the first few words. For the rest, Gettingto Know You! even includes a staple-bound songbook tucked into the backcover, which includes sheet music and complete lyrics for all the songs.

Given that Rodgers & Hammerstein won countless awards for their musicals(including two Pulitzers and armfuls of Tonys, Grammys, Emmys, and Oscars),maybe it's not so surprising that the lyrics adapt well into any format. Ifnothing else, it's hard to argue with any book that can get your kid beltingout, "I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair!" (Ages 4 to 8) --PaulHughes ... Read more
