5-0 out of 5 stars Niece and Her Mom Loves It!
I bought this for my ten year old niece who takes Spanish in her fifth grade class. She loves it, and I know this will make all the difference in her ability to access the language and learn. Her mom said the book is really great, and I wouldn't be surprised if my three-year old nephew makes some use of it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ever...you can find it here!
I am buying 3 more copies of this book for fellow teachers in my building.

I find the book easy to use, up-to-date, and a handy reference on any spanish word.

The picture are real life situations from computer usage, to apartment rentals, to a visit to the beauty shop..all in pictures and the Spanish work for everying associated with the picture.

An invaluable guide for the classroom or any one who want the Spanish word for an every day item or life experience.

I'm trying to get the district to order them for all the teachers in my school as well as all schools in the district.

    I'm sold.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Resource!
I teach an adult ESL class and have discovered that this book is a resource I really cannot do without! In combination with the teacher's manual, it has become a valuable resource for teaching new vocabulary to my students. When I first started using it in my lessons, the students skimmed through it and were very impressed with the variety of pictures arranged by themes. After using it at home, they have ALL told me that it is a wonderful book and are so thankful they have it!

5-0 out of 5 stars good, clear, colorful pictures for beginner or advanced
I use with a multi-level class and everyone likes it. Pictures and definitions can spark discussions. Divided into sections which are color-coded by topic. Very full resource for the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book and translation!
Unlike a lot of other books that are translated into Spanish, this one doesn't lose much of the rhythm or the fun when translated. It also has the English text along with the Spanish text. My 1 1/2 year old son really enjoys this book, along with the tape recording of his Tio Raul reading it. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as a child!
I think one of the many bonuses of the bilingual version of this book is that the text is simple and does not overpower the page. This is a great book for a great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to understand
A wonderful book for begginers at a really cheap price. The pictues show the text really well and just in case there are some misunderstandings about the meaning of the spanish sentenes, the english version is witten right below it. I am teaching my 2-year old spanish along with improving mine, and this book is really helpful. HIghly recommended to all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book
I bought this book for my son, and think i'll have to get another pretty soon, he can't let go, either i have to read it to him every night or he has to read it to me, It's getting pretty worn out.
Some times we alternate, I read in spanish he reads in english.
So if your looking for a billingual book for your children look no further

5-0 out of 5 stars Opposites Attract
This book does an excellent job of exploring the concepts of size, color and opposites using a storyline about two dogs who are very different, but also the best of friends. English text is displayed under the Spanish, making it an excellent choice for a bilingual classroom in the primary grades. ( or for English as a second language learners.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This book is simple and kindof boring. The illustrations are not very realistic. My children never got interested in it. There are only a handful of pages with one animal per page. it isn't very exciting at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Spanish/English Series
Raising a multilingual child is difficult particularly in our mono-lingual culture. It is all too easy to resort to the English default. As a parent I have to make an extra conscious effort to speak Spanish to my daughter and familiarize her ear with the sounds she will hopefully use one day. In this regard bi-lingual books have been essential in helping me to set aside Spanish-time. I have read this series of board books by Rebecca Emberley to my daughter since she was 3-months old and they are still among her favorites at 15 months. These books are ideal for interacting with your baby and toddler in a multilingual fashion. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the pages withstand repeated vigorous turning by little hands. Each page presents a single word in English and Spanish for added comprehension, yet ideal for short attention spans. Thank you for a wonderful series.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT series of books to learn words not just espanol!!
These are a great series of well & simply illustrated books that my son absolutely loves. 4-0 out of 5 stars A good way to start out with a second language for kids
I bought this set for my 5 year-old and 8 year-old. For the most part, they and I like it, but I must admit it takes a wee bit of getting used to. You won't be able to just put the tape on and walk away with this set, you'll need to sit with your kids and go through it together. But if you're willing to do that you'll reap some very real benefits, and your kids will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Learning for the Young
This is a great set to introduce Spanish to young kids. I have been using it with my four year old with great success. The book and cassette compliment each other well and really hold his attention. Each chapter contains several simple yet creative games to help reinforce the vocabulary and phrases being taught and ends with an on-going story in the form of a cartoon. I enjoy the program too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish for Children (Passport Books)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Effective!
This is a great way to introduce your children (and yourself) to Spanish. The book is colorful with lots of songs and games. The cassette recordings are very clear and the instructor is warm and cheerful. My 5-year-old daughter and I absolutely loved this! The only problem is, now that we have finished it we are looking for the next step. Highly recommended. P.S. My daughter often serenades us in the morning with her Spanish songs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars El libro El Principio
Yo leí este libro hoy. Pienso que es un buen libro, pero es un poco facíl para yo. Tengo 10 años. Tambien había muchos dibujos bellisimo que me gusto mucho. El libro es de un hombre que tiene problemas con su motor en su avion. Esta en el Desierto Sahara, y ve a un hombre chiquito de un otro planeta. Tiene una buena final, tambien. Pienso que te gustara!

5-0 out of 5 stars el principito
el principito uno de esos libros que siempre debemos leer en diferentes edades, creo que es una de esas escrituras hechas para el disfrute de todos, nos hace pensar y ser más humanos cada vez que lo leemos, solo piensa que alguien todos los días esta esperando para ser domesticado. Si tienes un hijo leeselo y espera, que al cabo de los años el solo buscará el libro para leerlo.

5-0 out of 5 stars este libro me hacía llorar

Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some issues with some of the Spanish Words
As a native Spanish speaker, it is very important for me that my son learn Spanish. My son loves all of the books in this series, but this one causes me a few problems. Part of the problem is the Spanish words used (which is an issue for my dialect). For example, "bananas" is translated as "las bananas" instead of "los platanos" and peas are translated as "las guisantes" instead of "los chicharros" and "broccolli" is "el brecol" instead of "el broculi" (sorry my keyboard is not set to do accents). The other issue is some of the foods selected. For example, "soup" is one of the foods, but it is hard to draw in a way that children really understand that is is soup. "Radish" is anothert choice, but since it is such an uncommon vegetable, I am not sure why she didn't use someting like a potato or a bell pepper, which are more common. So, I would recommend this book, but be prepared to change some of the words around using your computer, printer, and some glue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic, brief intro to Spanish
I wanted to introduce Spanish to my infant son so I bought this and "Mi Ropa/My Clothes" by the same author. I like this one the best. Both have very simple pictures labeled with the English and Spanish word. My son is 5 months old and seems to enjoy the pictures. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Painful to read
I must agree with several of the other reviews. This book was translated with no thought to rhyme or flow. That's part of what makes Dr. Seuss books attractive to kids. It is a joy to read the translated version of "Green eggs & ham", but the "Cat in the hat" is positively painful.

2-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Ms. Denise Caramagno
The spanish version of this book is pathetic. We also have "Huevos verdes con jamon" (Green eggs with ham) in spanish and it is delighful to read it.

At least, in this edition you still have the english version to read.

I think this book needs a re-edition with a more accurate translation.

1-0 out of 5 stars El gato en el sombrero/The Cat in The Hat
When I first bought this book in Spanish (many years ago) the translation was so awful that I wrote the publishers begging them to improve future editions. I recently saw the book again and not a word has been changed-it's still a abomination.

2-0 out of 5 stars What good is Dr. Seuss if it doesn't rhyme?
The Spanish portion of this book doesn't rhyme. I have seen other Dr. Seuss books in Spanish that do. This one is a direct translation of the English. I think it would have been a lot more effective to stray from the English enough to make the Spanish rhyme too!

    5-0 out of 5 stars I'm teaching my children Spanish . . .
(...) The point was made that the translator could have done a better job had he used a little license to play with the words and make it read with an improved cadence and rhyme. However, I really wanted a literal translation! My kids speak English and are learning Spanish -- they know the English version well. It is helpful to have a direct translation because the kids can pick out the words they do know and fill in the rest because of the context --- this only works if the translation is exact/literal. The English version is also written on every page to help with that process of word-deciphering. For me, this was a very good choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A bold bright addition to any collection of children's books
A enjoy looking at this book just as much as my children do. I am a mother of 4 and a preschool teacher. The colors in this book are simple and bold. It is a great resource for teaching Spanish/English and numbers in the classroom. I like the fact that the Spanish words are not the simplest choices. It challenges the Spanish learner in me. I use this book with pre-schoolers mainly 2 year olds. It is easily adaptable to the older classroom learning Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great series for early language acquisition
I have been using this entire series with my son since he was born, and he is now 14 months. He loves the pictures and turning the pages. The books use the format of one word per page and it gives both the English and Spanish form of the word. This is a great series for early language acquisition.

Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the 'pulga' in all of the pages.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Error-filled
As other reviewers have noted, there are problems with this book, despite its laudable intent. In short, it is doubtful that the author speaks fluent Spanish herself, and it seems as if she simply opened a Spanish-English dictionary to create the book.

For example, for 'azul/blue' she displays a fish, which she calls a "pescado." As any second-year Spanish student can tell you, the animal is a 'pez' whereas prepared food is called 'pescado' (literally, "that which has been fished"). Also, on the back cover she writes "¡Recolecte todos los libres en la serie!" (Collect all the books in the series). The verb "recolectar" means "to gather", not "to collect" as in a collection (she needed to use "coleccionar")

As a Spanish professor, I commend her good intentions with this book, but I cannot recommend this book until the errors are corrected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to teach colors in English & Spanish
At first, I resisted purchasing books from this series because I wanted an actual picture of whatever was being described, like in the "My First Board Book" series by DK Publishing. However, I believe that "Mis Colores" is an excellent way to teach colors, and succeeds in one place where the Board Book Series (and some others) fail. I do not like when colors and shapes are combined, for example, "red square."

In regards to another reviewer's comments, my understanding of Spanish is that the article is placed before the noun, so "el pescado" is correct and just "pescado" is not. This is also another detail that I have noticed many bilingual board books lack.

I am a bilingual Spanish/English speaker. My ethnic background is Cuban and Mexican. It is quite correct to use the article in front of the Spanish version of the word and not the English for one simple reason. English words are all gender neutral, while Spanish words all have gender, which the article helps you identify. The color spelling also changes based on gender, so you must know the gender in order to know how to say the color. For example, la manzana es roja, even though the color is rojo.

Also, cafe and marron are both correct for brown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable little book
I LOVE this book. So does my 1-year old. He has self full of books and always wants this one. I think it's the colors, pictures and overall size of the book. It is important to me for him to learn some key Spanish words--that is why I got this book. Not to TEACH him the entire language.

    P.S.
I've always heard of brown being called "cafe" in Spanish...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Needs a Better Translator
We purchased 3 in this series of books because we are trying to raise a bilingual child. Overall, I must commend the books. The colors are brilliant, the images full and fun for our child (she's been enjoying the books since she was 6 months old and is now a year old). I also am happy that the book has board pages. I have, however, two complaints regarding the translation. 1)The book introduces animals in English as fish, but in Spanish as "el pescado." I see no reason to put the word "the" in front of the Spanish but not in front of the English (either "the fish" and "el pescado" or just "fish" and "pescado." This is done throughout the book. Another problem, for me at least, is that the book gets the Spanish word for the color brown wrong. It says "cafe" is Spanish for brown - well the only thing I have heard Spanish speakers call "cafe" is coffee! Just to see if that has to do with the fact that I do not know persons from all Spanish speaking nations (but I do know Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Ecuadorians, Argentinians, Panamanians, Columbians, Peruvians, and Spanish) I looked it up in a Larousse Grand Dictionary. For the color brown the following Spanish words are offered: "carmelita," "marron," "castano" (which means brunette). The sole definition under "cafe" is coffee. A book that presents itself as a learning tool should not make an error like this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnifico!
Excellent resourses for easily learning Spanish through colorful illistrations. Toddlers and older kids can benefit greatly from this book. As far as bilingual books go, this one and Drum, Chavi, Drum!/Toca, Chavi, Toca! are the ones that my children love most. When kids love a book and can't put it down, that's a great sign that they will learn Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for ALL Ages!
I used this book to help my daughter learn a multitude of words in English and ASL signs when she was *very* young. Now that she's a preschooler, we're looking at it again from the Spanish perspective. And even though I am fluent in Spanish, I learned a *lot* of very specific vocaublary from this book (the names of all different kinds of vehicles and tools, for instance). I would recommend this book not only for parents of very young children, but also for students of the Spanish language of *any* age, as a vocabulary builder. If I were teaching a high school language class, I would want to copy pages out of this book, blank out the names, and challenge students to label each picture. What a great resource!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures!
Nice photos, not cheaply put together. Very clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This is a wonderfully colorful and fun book. My newborn is going to love learning Spanish with this book, so will I! The photographs are of real things -- not drawings, so children can relate directly to the words and pictures. It is a large and sturdy hardcover so it will withstand tiny fingers turning from page to page. If you buy only one book to introduce the language to your youngster, make it this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
This book has been my 2 year old daughter's favorite book for the last six months. The pictures are engaging, and grouped in categories that make sense.

She's spent hours reviewing this large, well-made book. She's progressed from being able to point to photos of things when asked, to saying the names of them herself, or asking what the photo is. I've learned a lot of Spanish as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Platero
This translation of Platero and I is the only "complete" translation into English of the Spanish Classic. It is also the most Spanish! This refers to the paperback edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Return to Simplicity
This is a beautiful little book by a Nobel Prize Winner of Literature that is too often neglected, Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Only Jimenez could make the blood of a leach in a stream of water into beautiful imagery. Children read this book as part of their curriculum in Argentina, however, this book can be equally enjoyed and appreciated by adults.

The story is a simple one: it is a first person (semi-autobiographical) account of a poet and his donkey in the mountains of Spain, appreciating, almost Zen-like, the simple beauties of life. The elements, children playing, leaches bleeding in a pool, everything seems beautiful in this book, and the descriptions are exquisite.

This is probably the best introduction to Jimenez, a book not to be missed!

5-0 out of 5 stars sencillez y belleza
Platero y yo es un libro tierno y sencillo que cuenta la relacion de un borrico y su amo. Yo lo recomiendo a todo aquel que quiera aprender espanol con esta pequena historia llena de poesia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for any age!!!!!
Having first read this book while I was in elementary school, it has been the book that I have rated as one of my favorites all my life (in my 40's). Simple words convey volumes of meaning - very little is written to say so much about peace, love and death. Focus is on what is meaningful in life. Whenever I pick up my volume and read a couple of passages, I realize where my priorities are. Would love to find the complete volume with all the passages. The age limit should be removed - it may keep older readers from experiencing life with Platero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, captivating! A beautiful story about friendship!
A sweet story about Platero (the donkey) and his owner. The descriptive language is so rich and beautiful that this book is used in Argentina's Grammar schools to teach about 'descriptive writing style'. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book succeeds where some others fail
I appreciate this book as well as the "My Colors" book by the same author because they take the time to seperate shapes and colors. In some series, the two are combined and I feel that they should be taught seperately.
