Three time Newbery honor author Nancy Farmer's epic fantasy, The Sea of Trolls, is gigantic in every way. There are big Vikings and bigger trolls. There are big themes--hope, despair, life and death. At a substantial 450+ pages, the sheer size of this hefty tome is impressive. But, like all of Farmer's fine work, the large scale has room for enormous quantities of heart and humor. At the center of this massive adventure is a small Saxon boy named Jack, who's never been much good at anything until the Bard of his medieval village makes him an apprentice. Then, just as Jack is learning to tap into and control his power, he is kidnapped (along with his little sister, Lucy) and taken to the court of King Ivar the Boneless and his half troll queen Frith. When one of Jack's amateur spells causes the evil queen's beautiful hair to fall out, he is forced to undertake a dangerous quest across the Sea of Trolls to make things right, or suffer the consequences--the sacrifice of his beloved sister to Frith's patron goddess, Freya. Along the way Jack faces everything from giant golden troll-bears to man-eating spiders, yet each frightening encounter brings wisdom and understanding to the budding young Bard. No quester who enters these pages with Jack will go away unsatisfied. Farmer's skillful melding of history, mythology, and humor, is reminiscent of both Tamora Pierce and Terry Pratchett's medieval fantasies, and will no doubt be HUGELY enjoyed by fantasy readers of all ages. --Jennifer Hubert ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Whoa, best of all her books (in my opinion)
Since you already read what it was about (i think) i'll just tell you what I thought about Lois Duncan's book, Stranger With My Face. Laurie was a pretty typical girl in the start, but along the traumatizing events which eventually lead back the a very mysterious person named Lia, who is her twin (evil) sister, Laurie starts to change. She has more depth as a person and popularity was not the only thing that mattered to her. Probably my favorite thing about this story was the romance, it was pretty unexpected who Laurie would fall in love with, but then again, once you think about it it really isn't. The plot was totally interesting and kept you on the edge of your seat. I've read all of Duncan's books (almost) and I still think this one is by FAR the best...What are you wasting time reading this review for? Get reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful fantasy thriller
How can she be in two places at one time?

Laurie was at home, but her boyfriend swears he saw her on the beach with another guy. Her family insists they see her coming and going when she's been out of the house for hours. Who--or what--is taking over Laurie's life?

A short blurb on the front cover proclaims: "Someone is watching Laurie, waiting to steal her life." How could any young reader resist such a line? When I picked up this book I couldn't.

Stranger with My Face, told in first person, starts off more as though it's going to be a thriller than a fantasy. But as the fantasy element strengthens it becomes steadily scarier, building into a terrifying climax that makes for an exciting, unputdownable read.

This book is definitely intended for young adults (after all, the protagonist is 17 years old) but I suspect most readers will be a lot younger. Few 12-year-olds can resist a really scary story. I certainly couldn't. I remember reading Jane Eyre (one of the few good books to come my way, purely by accident) and it was the mad woman in the attic rather than the hopeless love between Jane and her employer that kept me turning the pages. :-)

Many of the reviews here, I feel, give away too much of the plot. But I particularly like Heidi Lott's review and envy the fact that she obviously had someone around when she was young to point her in the direction of the best books for young readers. Like Heidi, I would also recommend Stranger with My Face to any adult who loves a good story well told.

4-0 out of 5 stars After all these years...
I read this book when I was a pre-teen and it's haunted me ever since. I'm 33 years old and couldn't remember the name or author, only the feeling the book gave me as an adopted child with a wild imagination. Something in my head clicked today and I searched for the book on Amazon and lo-and-behold, here it was! This is a fantastic read you'll never forget, I recommend it to any young reader, or even an older one like me, as I'm definitely ordering it to re-read and share with other young people.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
this book will leave you thinking till the last page. Its one of those drama/angst stories with a touch of sci fi that is amazing. I dont recomend reading it at dark cuz you may get freaked out! j/k. Its a great suspenseful read as the main character discovers something shocking. i dont want to tell you and spoil it for you so i'll tell you to read it and find out for yourself. i promise you wont be dissappointed unless you don't like reading good stuff. ^_~

4-0 out of 5 stars sOoOo cOoOol
I give this book 4 stars because it really put me on the edge of my seat because i really thought it was only Laurie's imagination, but when i found out it was her twin sister i was really shocked! =] ... Read more

Book Description

Suze is a mediator -- a liaison between the living and the dead. In other words, she sees dead people. And they won't leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn't seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.

But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it's not that easy. There's a ghost with revenge on her mind ... and Suze happens to be in the way.

Not many authors kill their main character on page two, but when Gary Soto does in The Afterlife the tactic results in a richly textured coming of age story. Chuy is a normal teenage guy, making his way in the barrios of Fresno, California, and hoping to impress a pretty girl. Carefully combing his hair in the restroom at Club Estrella, he only has a few moments to consider his "loverboy" strategy before his young life is (literally) cut short by a knife-wielding stranger who misinterprets a compliment.

Soon Chuy is floating above his bleeding body, embarking on a journey of personal exploration. As he drifts though his hometown (tightening his stomach muscles so as not to get blown off course) he manages to achieve many of the things he didn’t when he was alive--recognizing how much he is loved by family and friends, saving a life, punishing a thug, and even falling in love (with a ghost-girl who has committed suicide).

Soto has a knack for particularly apt comparisons ("the sun rose pink as a scar," "laundry hung like the faded flags of defeated nations,"), which brings beauty and clarity to this dangerous world of cholos and cabrones (and if you don’t know what those are, there’s a glossary in the back). Aside from a couple plot points left dangling, The Afterlife offers a tangibly detailed portrait of a young life worth living. (Ages 13 and older)--Brangien Davis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ghost of Chuy
The book The Afterlife was a great description of what a person may encounter in their afterlife. At a school dance Chuy was stabbed three times by a strange man. From that point on the ghost of Chuy told the book and gave great description of how a person may act or what a person may do after they pass away.I thought that this was a great book that gave a person a good look of a different perspective of life and how or what we may encounter it after our human life on earth is over.Although the book seemed to get repetitive in the ending chapters I thought that is was well written. The main character, Chuy, certainly went through a life changing experience and was well developed in the novel. This is a great book that is though provoking and really triggers your mind.

2-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this book...
The problem with killing your main character off in the first chapter is that it usually doesn't leave room for much of a climax in the end.I wanted to like this book, it's a great concept! The first chapter is very gripping, however, I just wasn't impressed with anything that followed. While the book is short, it seems repetitive and boring.Furthermore, the characters are very distant and unconvincing. While the entire book is spent following Chuy's ghost and listening to his thoughts and feelings, I never get a feeling of who he really is/was.Another downfall of this book is all the Spanish words thrown into it.Luckily there is a glossary included in the back, but since I *had* to know the meaning of every Spanish word I came across, I was constantly flipping to the back of the book. While it's interesting to study languages and cultures, I don't really think the words added anything to the book and they slowed down the flow of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars he's done it again
i have always been a fan of gary soto, he is an amazing writter, so amazing i cant even describe it, byt he takes hispanic life and turns it into something beautiful so other people can truely see what our culture is about. hes done it yet again with this book the afterlife. I would strongly recommend that before reading this you read buried onions...a book about chuys cousin. in buried onions eddie tells us about jesus's death...and you find out who did it and what happened to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars A New Way to Look at Death
Killed before his time, Jesus, or Chuy as they call him in Fresno, discovers that his life in not completely over.In a way, it has just begun! After his brutal murder, the wind carries Chuy's ghost all over the city to see his grieving friends and family, and even his killer.Along his journey, Chuy meets the ghost of a young girl who has committed suicide. Together they are able to come to terms with their deaths, say their goodbyes, and move towards the afterlife.

Another compelling novel by award-winning author Gary Soto.It is filled with love, loss, compassion, and even humor.Death is so unfamiliar to us all, that it is always interesting to see a new idea of what goes on in the afterlife.Like Chuy, do we really visit the people we care about, torment the people we hate, or fall in love with someone new?The Afterlife makes us look at death and life in a new and refreshing way.The book is slow at times and there are some unresolved issues, but that is the way it is in real life, and somehow it makes the story more believable. Without being too dark, it's a great read that makes you think.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it sounds
The Afterlife by Gary Soto seems like a really twisted, new book from the review, but after reading the first few chapters you get bored. Everything seemed to take forever to happen, and the book really isn't that long. Chuy, the main character, is also pretty boring. True, he tells us about his life when he was alive and the neat things he did, but he whines a lot and he just isn't someone you would care about. He doesn't pop out of the book like some main characters do. What I did like about the book was the writer used spanish words added a glossary. Take it out of the library if you still want to read it, buy don't buy it. ... Read more

Book Description

Everything is going great for Suze. Her new life in California is a whirlwind of parties and excellent hair days. Tad Beaumont, the hottest boy in town, has even asked Suze out on her very first date. Suze is so excited that she's willing to ignore her misgivings about Tad... particularly the fact that he's not Jesse, whose ghostly status--not to mention apparent disinterest in her--make him unattainable.

What Suze can’t ignore, however, is the ghost of a murdered woman whose death seems directly connected to dark secrets hidden in none other than Tad Beaumont's past.

5-0 out of 5 stars the big mistake
What a great book, in it darren makes a mistake which could have started one of the hugest wars in history between the vampires and vampanese. the mistake was going into the tunnels of blood. Mr Krepsley and darren meet a vampanese named Murlough. i give this book 5 stars because it was imposible to put down it makes you feel as if your in a different world..............THEIR WORLD. this book is the best book you will have read and will ever read. God bless and also BUY THIS BOOK. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read!!!
I liked the book because it was thrilling from beginning to end!, plus it disagreed with mostly all the other books about what vampires can and can't do. Darren Shan almost makes it seem "vampires" are real! Out of the first three books this book definitely is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK PEOPLE!
Perhaps the most frightening horror book in this amazing series, Tunnels of Blood will leave the reader begging for more. places a whole new spin on vampires. great book that I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND

4-0 out of 5 stars Tunnels of Blood
Tunnels of Blood, number 3 in the Cirque du Freak series, is a great read. This book follows Darren Shan as he ventures with Mr. Crepsley and Evra(the snake man) into a big city around Christmas time. This book is very good, but do not read it if you are looking for high-quality literature. I do recommend this book to anybody who wants an interesting look into the world of Vampires and freak shows. A great read for kids alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars the Best Book in the whole entire world!
Hey This Is Aqua-Lynn Merideth! Guess what? I just got done reading the best book in the world.Ok, The book is about a boy and his adventures as a half-vampire. One time, when Darren was watching the news, they saw there were these dead bodies found drained of blood. He then blamed his master Mr.Cresply because he is a full vampire! Ever since then he has been following him in the night until he....well your just going to have to read this book and the other 7 in the series to find out. Bye! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
Darren Shan does it agian. Yet another awsome addition to the series. For my this tied as my top favorite book in the series. Its packed with action and suprizes. Hardly ever a dull moment. I guess the only complaint I have is having to wait for these books to come out. They are all ready up to book 11 in the UK! If you want my advice, definatly by this book. I will probably read it over and over. A must have if you are a fan of the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cirque du freak book #7
Theis was an excellent example of creative wirting. The complexity of the plot has allowed the author to write seven books without a single miswriten one. This is a book i would recomend for anyone who enjoys a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Storytelling!
Cirqu Du Freak has shaken my conept of a good book. Two weeks ago I started with book 1, and have read through the entire seires since. I'm a parent of teenagers, both of whom think I've gone crazy to be spending so much time reading Darren Shan. But, I like a good story wherever I find it. shan has created some characters, settings, and situations in this series that keep giving readers what they want--an interesting plot and characters you can't get enough of. I'm sorry I have to wait for September 2004 to read book 8. Man, if I could only write like this, my tame book on bicycle rippers, "Abby and the Bicycle Caper," would be making me rich. Alas, it's back to the word processor for yours truly.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I LOVE this book! If you liked the other Cirque du Freak books then you will also love this one. This one is the start of a journey with Darren, Mr. Crepsley, and Harkat (and some others) who go out to find and kill the Vampaneze Lord. READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT MORE! :) I love all the Cirque du Freak books because it seems like Darren Shan needs to write about 20 more to actually finish the whole entire story! This one is just as good as the rest! Totally a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful adventure with a wiser Darren
All the vampires knew that this day was coming. The mysterious Desmond Tiny, who is as hated by the vampires as he is revered, made a prophecy regarding the Vampaneze Lord and a great war. The Vampaneze Lord, leader of the enemies of the vampires, is alive and traveling the world. Now, it's up to Darren Shan, his mentor Larten Crepsley and a Vampire Prince named Vancha March to find the Vampaneze Lord and kill him before he brings about the destruction of all vampires.

Mr. Tiny tells them that they have five chances to rid themselves of the Vampaneze Lord. One passed when the vampires executed one of their Princes, Kurdha Smahlt, for being a traitor. While Mr. Tiny refuses to tell Darren and Mr. Crepsley what the four remaining chances are, he does tell them to "follow their hearts." Following their hearts takes them to the Cirque du Freak by way of the dwelling of sorceress Lady Evanna, who makes a very disturbing prophecy about Darren himself!

While Shan never skimps on adventure or suspense, Darren's voice is stronger and more mature here than it has been in the past. Darren, now an experienced fighter and thinker, handles his responsibilities as a newly initiated vampire prince with thought and care. Shan leaves us in the end with many questions about Darren's future and the war between the vampires and vampaneze, promising an intriguing eighth book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable
I look forward to the time that my son really enjoys me reading this book. This is not one of his favorites nor is it frequently read my house but still this is an excellent book. I think that my son might be a little too young for this book at the moment but I keep bringing it out and reading it to him hoping that he will finally be into this book. The Sesame Street books were favorites when I was a kid so I know they will be for my son too. I recommend that this book be for a child over the age of 2 because at 18 mos this book still has little interest for my son. For young ones try Sandra Boyton books, mouse paint and Winnie the Pooh Sweet Dreams books.

5-0 out of 5 stars children of all ages will love this book!!!
We first found this book when my nephew was born, over 18 years ago. He loved it so much we had to read it several times each time he was at our house, so we got him his own copy. We still had to read it when he came over and his parents read it to him every night(no skipping pages allowed, no matter how many times we had read it !). Both copies were completely worn out. We have been looking for more copies since then. It is surely a sign of how good this book is that it is nearly impossible to find in used book stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved this book!
This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I can still remember reading it for the first time while in line at the grocery store and thinking it was the funniest book in the world. It would make a good bed time story and would be fun for a parent to read to there child because it is very exciting for a kid. I highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute!
Kids love it. They think it's hysterical. Anytime you find a book that they love, it's a good thing. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Monster From the Very Beginning
Of course, to see a person's amazon.com blurb on a novel (or novella) such as this one, you would estimate the person's age to be either that of a parent, such as say 26 or 32, or that of a small child, perhaps four or even six. However, considering my spelling and grammar in the first sentence, you can probably deduce that the latter is not applicable. As for the former, I've got a ways to go.

Basically, I'm a college student who was so profoundly touched by this work of book that I must stress its greatness to those generations that look up to me so dearly (yes, all of them). Essentially, the repeated reading of this book at an early age for me created a lens through which all other works of suspense were viewed and interpreted. Needless to say, Hitchcock never did it for me, and waiting for twists at the end of "The Twilight Zone" was like waiting for crust at the end of a piece of pizza.

No, not a single work of suspense could top this one. Told in the most ominous second person, protagonist Grover implores the reader not to turn the pages, for there is, as the title may suggest, a flesh eating virus hidden within the pages of the book itself. Just kidding, there's actually a monster at the end of the book, and if you wish to ignore the age-old adage that "curiousity killed the cat," then you just might find this out for yourself. (I, on Grover's recommendation, did not in fact turn the pages for several months after starting the book, until my mommy assured me that it was okay. Needless to say, I trust my own mother over a Muppet.)

At the risk of giving away any scant fragment of the ending, I must cease my review here. But be forewarned, the trip to the end of the book will be a thrilling one. I'm aware that Sesame Street has released some rather predictable works before ("Cookie cookie cookie starts with C?" Thanks, Cookie Monster, for the thoroughly engaging spelling lesson), but this is not one of them. Fasten your seatbelts kids, and turn the page.

If you dare!

No, seriously, turn the page. ... Read more

Imogene Yeck, former gang member and current fairy butt-kicker, is the cool "blue girl" at the center of Charles de Lint'slatest urban fantasy novel. Seventeen-year-old Imogene jumps at the chance to lose her bad girl reputation when her family moves to a new town. She purposely lays low at Redding High, only making friends with Maxine, a shy, studious girl who is Imogene's opposite in every way. Things are going well for the new friends--until the day Imogene meets Adrian, the benign ghost of a boy who died in the school's parking lot. Adrian and Imogene's unusual connection attracts the unwelcome attention of Redding High's resident Little People, or fairies. Affronted by streetwise Imogene's lack of belief in them, the fairies set into motion a malevolent prank that will not only turn Imogene completely blue from head to toe, but pit her, Adrian and Maxine against some of the most frightening beings of the Otherworld--the soul-sucking Anamithims. de Lint's Blue Girl reads like a really well-executed episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer--smart and thought provoking, without taking itself too seriously. Although the action builds slowly, the final scene, involving a bucket of blue paint, a knife fight, and green monster blood, is absolutely worth it. Buffy fans who enjoy meeting Imogene and Co. will also want to check out Holly Black's dark fairy tale, Tithe, and Nina Kiriki Hoffman's modern ghost story, A Stir of Bones --Jennifer Hubert ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A most unusual ghost story...
When orphaned Peggy Grahame goes to live with her Uncle Enos in the old Grahame ancestral home, the past comes alive. The ghosts of her ancestors come and tell her about their lives in the Revolution, while actual current events mirror those of their pasts.

Barbara Grahame, the most frequent ghostly visitor, is an independent and intelligent young woman living in the American Revolution. Her interaction with the extraordinarily clever British officer, Peaceable Sherwood is very enjoyable to read...particularly as Peaceable is nemesis of Barbara's brother, Dick (a young captain fighting for American independence). At the same time, serving to frame the story, Peggy uncovers mysteries of the past, and is led to her own romance with a young man from England.

A very unusual and thoughtful Revolution story with possibly the best ghosts I've ever read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sherwood Ring is an enduring YA favorite
Published in 1958, this engaging novel about a lonely young woman's encounters with four Revolutionary War-era ghosts is well worth the effort it may take to find a copy. (I read the book as a pre-teen many years ago, then tracked down my own copy through Peter Smith of Boston about four years ago). Some readers may find the assumption that the abruptly orphaned heroine has no future aside from marriage or life with her cranky history-loving uncle a bit dated, but the bulk of the story features such strong, appealing characters that this defect can be overlooked.

Peggy Graham comes to her family's historic upstate New York home, "Rest-and-be-thankful", after the death of her father. From the first, she is privileged by visits from the family ghosts, who regale her with tales of their exploits during the American Revolution. The narration skillfully switches among the points of view so that the reader really feels he or she knows each character intimately. As each ghost reveals his or her part in the romances and intrigues of the past, clues to the heroine's present-day dilemma are revealed, enabling Peggy to resolve the conflicts among the people she loves and make the choices that will shape her own future.

I began reading The Sherwood Ring about a month after I finished The Perilous Gard (also by Elizabeth Marie Pope) and I was deeply frustrated when forced to put it down. Every time I read it I drifted away from reality and entered the worlds of Peggy Grahame and Peaceable Drummond Sherwood. It was such a wonderful, fast-paced story, with likable characters and a lot of romance. It's one of my favorite books, and if you're a big reader and romantic like me, I'm sure you'll love it too! Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars EMP's Best Book
This is my favorite book.
Out of every other book that I have read, this is the best because it made me want to live in the Revolutionary era, although of course The Sherwood Ring makes that seem quite glamorous.
Peggy's story doesn't seem to matter as much as those of the people she meets, but because they are interesting to be with, and their sotries are woven together so expertly, that it makes upfor any lack of the main character's development anyway. Peggy isn't all that special of a person, and that is why EMP chose to devote so much of the book to the other characters.
I picked up The Sherwood Ring because I've always been interested in the Revolutionary War, and I've read it several times each year since. It's accessable, with medium sized print, and a light plot, but still has managed to capture my imagination like no other book, even EMP's more favored book, The Perilous Gard, which leans more on the side of contemporary fairy-tale fantasy.
People who never finished the book obviously wouldn't be able to tie Peggy's story into that of the ghosts, but trust me, if you wait, you will.
And this book is worth any wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sherwood Ring
This is the book to read, without a doubt. This historial fiction book was so real I actually looked up the characters to see whether they were real or not. This book travels back and forth within two time periods. This is romance set both in the Revolutionary times and the early 1900's. Peggy Grahame is the main character, and she travel's to her uncle's ancestral estate of Rest-an-be-thankful after her father dies. Before she reaches the estate, however, she meets a handsome British scholar, Pat. But when Pat and Peggy reach Rest-and-be-thankful, Peggy's uncle forbids Pat to ever come to the house again, for no particular reason. As Peggy's uncle never seems to have time for her, Peggy explores the house and finds several objects linked with her Revolutionary ancestors. After finding each object, she meets the ghost it was linked to and they tell her about their story of the War. The first ghost to tell his story is Richard Grahame, and he talks of his attempts at capturing the clever British marauder, Peaceable Drummond Sherwood. It was Richard's enemy Peaceable, however, who led him into a romance with the woman he never thought he would forgive. Then after finding a bean pot, Peggy meets her third ghost, Richard's sister, Barbara Grahame. She tells of Aunt Susanna's imprisonment and her escape to see her brother on Christmas day. Before she reaches her brother, she is unknowingly captured by Peaceable Sherwood. Incidentally, Barbara finds him attractive, charming, and clever, and just can't help falling in love with him. When she does turn him in, Barbara misses him more and more each day, and even tries to free him from jail. A short time after, Peggy meets Peaceable Sherwood face to face. He tells of his escape from jail and his last visit to Barbara before he rejoins his army and the end of the Revolutionary War. The one thing I didn't really like about this book was the ending. You never really got to know peggy, and there doesn't seem like a good reason for why Pat fell in love with her, or why she fell in love with Pat. What I wanted to know was what happened to the ghosts. But despite the ending, this book is a must read, and you'll never be able to put it down. ... Read more

Book Description

Can there be a more terrifying and seductive tale than this? The story of the notorious vampire Count Dracula, lord of the undead, who rises from his coffin at night to suck the blood of the living is, undoubtedly, the stuff of nightmares.

Narrated from several different viewpoints, Dracula is a complex story that many know but few have actually read.Jan Needle's newly edited version makes the gripping events accessible to the twenty-first century reader without losing the incomparably chilling atmosphere of Bram Stoker's original novel - brilliantly captured in the dramatic illustrations of award-winning artist Gary Blythe.
