5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book
Boots Raymond is a boy that want to play quarterback for his team - there's just one problem - the coach says he's too heavy to play that position. The coach assigns him to right tackle. His brother, Tom, is actually the one that encourages him to play football because he wants to quit. His brother explains that it's good to play the line because you help the quarterback make the plays.I like this book because it's very exciting, and I understand how it feels to play a position that you don't like.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves sports or who plays tackle football!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough To Tackle
Tough To Tackle is a book about a boy named Boots, who wants to be on the Apollos football team. When he goes to the coach he said that he wants to be a quarterback, and the choach said that he was too heavy. His brother was in the war and "Boots" wrote to him about how he was playing the line. Will he quit?Read the book Tough To Tackle to find out.
I read the book Tough To Tackle because I like reading about sports.I also like reading Matt Christopher books.Once I started reading it I couldn't stop.I suggest that everyone should read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tough to .... Read
This book was just pages and pages on details about 4 football games (plays called, players names)The actual story, about a boy who doesn't know if he wants to play or not because he's a tackle and not the quarterback encompassed about 10 pages of the book. The moral is a good one but it is just too difficult to get through 20 pages at a time about how much time is left or who ran which way.I know quite a bit about football and still wasn't interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough To Tackle
Tough To tackle, by Matt Christopher, is one of his books about sports. This type of book is a realistic fiction book so it's not true but it can happen.

This story takes place on a football field and happens from the months of September and October. Matt Christopher helps us know the characters by telling us what the characters do and how they act. The major conflict is that a boy named Boots Raymond really wants to play quarterback for his team called the Apollos, but Coach Hayes said that he's too heavy to play quarterback so he puts him on right tackle. Will Boots ever improve on his position? Matt Christopher's writing style interest me because he likes to write about sports all the time.

This book would be great for 9-11 year old kids because this book is interesting and I would recommend it.I'd give this book a 4/5. A person that likes sports would like this book. So to find out if Boots will ever improve on his position, go get this book now at your local library.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Beautiful Book!
I bought this book for my six year old son.He and his brother have always loved Jerry Pallotta's alphabet books, so I thought we'd give this book atry! Boy, are we glad that I did! The illustrations are beautiful, and asalways Mr. Pallotta gives children information in a way that they canunderstand - but without talking down to them. My son really loved thetwist at the end of the story. He was relieved that Danny wasn't out thereinthe ocean all by himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagination afloat!
This beauty of a book has so many quality elements! The pictures are gorgeous, first of all, and easily catch and hold readers' attentions.Perhaps some parents will raise their eyebrows at the seemingly disobedient little boy's adventures, but children will be entranced. The ending, inwhich it is revealed that Danny's adventures are really a bath-time storyhe is telling himself, far from being a cop-out, is reassuring to parentsand kids alike. In between, there is much (accurate!) information, gentlyshared, that will prompt kids to tell their own bath-time stories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Mama Played Baseball" - A Home Run Book
Through the eyes of a little girl named Amy, we can experience a little bit of life during World War II. During this time many athletic women vied for spots in the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League. When Amy's mother first tells her of her plans to get a job in the league, Amy wonders, "What kind of job is that?" Baseball is only a game she thinks. Amy's perception of her mother playing pro-baseball changes as her mother makes the team, wins games, and is popular with the fans who ask for her autograph. The reader can easily sense Amy's excitement as she watches many of her mother's games, jumping up and down when her mom scores a hit.
Through a simple plot line, award-winning author David Adler has adequately shown the events of that time. He works a little humor into the story giving the reader a laugh or two and reminding us of common life experiences. "Mama Played Baseball" has a happy ending as Amy's father returns home safely. This is illustrator Chris O'Leary's first picture-book and he has done a magnificent job bringing the story to life. His artwork depicts the 1940s and contributes immensely to the overall story. The story is suitable for children in the lower elementary grades and could also be used in social studies or to introduce sports. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for all baseball lovers!
High Heat is a book a teenage boy who has many problems that he needs to overcome in his life. He does his best to overcome his family troubles by playing baseball, which he loves and is very good at. While doing this he runs into more problems by playing baseball, but he doesn't quit. This is a great book when you think about doing what you love and not quiting. It was an inspirational book to me and it probably to many others.

What I liked about this book was that it expresses Shane Hunter's(the main character) feelings so that you feel that you are right there doing what Shane is doing. It also has many great baseball scenes, for a person that likes to play baseball you can relate to. It has him suffering and it has him starring. The book is a great balance of good and bad.

What I didnt like about this book is that it dragged some of the scenes out too much. Some of the least important scenes had too much information to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great action packed baseball storey!
This book starts out straight away with controversy and conflict. Shane Hunter and his family are very well off through his father's company. They live in an extremely nice home and go to a expensive school. Shane Hunter's father commits sucicide sending him into a depression. Immediately, like most kids he turns to a new lifestyle. They have to sell there house and give up everything and go to a new school. He even gives up baseball, his true love in life. When he gets arrested and has to do community service he works with a guy who helps him get back on track. At his new school he joins the baseball team and is one of the star players. After many great outings he starts to struggle. One of the most exciting moments is when he comes face to face with his old team that used to play for. He has to face the kid who basically replaced his life (Reese). He beans the kid in the face head on. He starts to lose everything and struggle again and consisders his old lifestyles. When Shane gets it together he gets back to himself and lets baseball help him through it. When time passes his guilt sets in. To help himself he starts out by trying to help the kid he hits (Reese). Time passes and they start to become friends but Reese isn't the same. He can't play anymore. It comes down to a fierce head to head battle and Shane has to face Reese again for the win.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Story
Carl Deuker, whom I consider one of the best authors for young adult sports fiction, has delivered another winner. This book is just flat out great, and any sports fan will not be disapointed. It will keep you reading for hours until you finish the book. This book is definately worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
Shane Hunter, a Sophomore and star closer for Shorelake High School - a private school near Seattle - seems to have it all, that is until his father is arrested for money laundering and later commits suicide. His mother is forced to sell the house and move the family into public housing. Shane falls in with the wrong crowd and is arrested for shoplifting at a local convenience store. He is put on probation fixing up a baseball field at a Boys' and Girls' Club. There he meets Cornelius Grandison, the baseball coach at his high school Shane later discovers. Coach Grandison becomes a father figure to Shane.

Carl Deuker has created another winner. You'll think you're sitting in the front row with a box of Crackerjacks and a Coke as Shane mows them down in the last inning, and you'll feel the emotions right along with Shane during the roller coaster ride his life takes. Good baseball books are in short supply for teens, so don't let this one slip past.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the bestest book ever in the sporty book world!!!
This is a totally excelent book. I think you should read it. A reason why is because it relates with teenage kids ...The story line is awsome too. I got to read it over 7 months before it came out and the author (Mr. Deuker) read it to us (his class) ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Shot
The Million Dollar Shot is about a boy named Eddie. He lives with his mom in a poor trailer park, but one day Eddie sends a poem into a contest hoping to win. One day he gets selected to shoot for 1 million dollars in New York City. He did shoot it and he got 1 million dollars! The ending is very good, but I won't tell you what it was... you'll have to find out yourself. This book is quite funny and entertaining. This book would've gotten 5 stars but it wasn't very long, if it was longer it would've been a spectacular book! No matter what, this book has got to be read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
Are you looking for a wonderous book too read? You should read "The Million Dollar Shot". The book is about a boy who shoots a basket for a Million Dollars. During the story he meets a girl that looks like a boy. The girl and Eddie would meet together at a basketball hoop close to their houses. They would talk and play H-O-R-S-E. When he hears that there was a shot for a million dollars he wrote a poem and sent it in. When he got a letter in the mail he was amased he had won the contest. I think the book was amasing. It had a lot of detail. If you like sports and you like basketball. You'll like this book. If you want to find out if he made the shot or not read this book and find out. It is a mystery.

4-0 out of 5 stars it was an okay book
Recommendation:
I recommend this book to people that are teenagers. This is a book that is funny ''I looked at Annie. She rolled her eyes. 'You are living proof that white people have no rhythm." When Eddie writes his poem, he didn't know how to rhyme. One thing I did not like is that for a character in the story to get into the contest, he/she must write a poem to win the contest." All you had to do to enter the contest was send in ten finkle box tops and an original poem about finkles." Therefore this book was a good book. that I recommend to anybody but mostly teenagers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Very Interesting!
Eddie Ball has to make this shot in front of a lot of fans.

I would feel very nervous trying to make the shot. Is he going to make it? You'll have to read the book to find out!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This book is about how Eddie Ball wins the poetry contest and one million dollars for sinking a foul shot at the NBA finals. But George Finkle, the owner of Finkle Foods, doesn't want Eddie to win. You will like this book but baseball Fans will love this book at One point in he book I all most cried I

5-0 out of 5 stars george salerno's book review
I like this book because i like baseball and i also like Derek Jeter. This story tells how Derek Jeter wanted to be the yankees shortstop it shows how he had to acommplished his goals by going through different obstacles in his way to make it to the major league.one of the obstacles was when he got drafted in 1992 but did not play until 1995. this book also talks about his great awards like becoming the american league rookie of the year.he also won the world series a couple of times. before Derek Jeter played for the yankees the yankees did not win a world series in 15 long years.so Derek Jeter is one of the big reasons that the yankees have been winning the world series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Derek Jeter realizes his dream of playing SS for the Yankees
As with other juvenile biographies in the Matt Christopher "On the Field/Court with..." series, this look at New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter emphasizes work ethic and family life as much as it does achievements on the baseball diamond. Since Jeter dreamed of being the Yankee's shortstop since he was a little boy, the first half of the book follows the "dreams come true" motif, while the second half of the book, covering how Jeter's Yankees won three World Series in his first four seasons in the Major Leagues comes under the "succeeding beyond your wildest dreams" heading. In relating key moments for Jeter at bat, on the bases or in the field, there is an admirable attempt to provide the details and not merely refer to things you might remember having seen on television. But there is always something of an educational purpose behind these sports biographies, so young readers will also learn that despite all his talent, Jeter had to work very hard to become a baseball star. Being considered the top high school player in the country does not mean you are ready for professional baseball, even at the lowest minor league level. Young readers will be informed to learn that Jeter's fielding style and batting swing had to be readjusted to make him a better player. They might also learn something from the relationship he enjoyed with his parents and his attitude towards people and school, as well as towards sports, that make him such an admired sports figure.

I believe this biography is written by Glen Stout, although it is copyrighted by Catherine M. Christopher for whom Matt ChristopherTM is a trademark. It only sounds confusing. One of the fun thing with these books is that they are not written "down" to the level of their readers. You should always keep an eye out for words that will send kids running to their dictionaries. In this book the biggie is found in the following sentence: "Near the end of the season he magnanimously offered to move to third base so Derek could play shortstop for the varsity." Other titles in this series look at Kobe Bryant, John Elway, Wayne Gretzky, Mia Hamm, Lisa Leslie, Tara Lipinski, Sammy Sosa, and Tiger Woods to name but a few. "Matt Christopher" is, by its own admission, the number one sports series for kids and based on the few books I have read to date, I have no reason to suspect there are engaging in hyperbole.

5-0 out of 5 stars On The Field With... DEREK JETER

5-0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Strike
Dan Gutman, the author of The Million Dollar Shot, comes back with a new book called The Million Dollar Strike. This book is hilarious. Ouchie, one of the main characters is in a Bowl-A-Rama with Squishy, another character. They have to get through the Bowl-A-Rama together. It was a bowling experience for the both of them.

I like this book because it is funny, and because it felt like I was Ouchie on the adventure. It was awesome. One thing that I didn't like about this book was that it was too short. I will give this book five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Shot
Dan Gutman strikes again with one of his million dollar books, The Million Dollar Strike. This book is different from the others. This book is a mystery book. Ouchie and Squishy have to get the Bowl-A-Rama looking better.

They try their hardest to fix up the place. Mr. Z even helps by paying some of his money. He uses it from his so-called "bank". But, is someone trying to destroy the place? Ouchie and Squishy are on a case to find out. Can you solve this mystery?

I thought this book was awesome. I give it five stars. I wish it would have lasted longer. While I was reading this book I felt like I was one of the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Native American Boy Learns about Life in New York
The Brave is a story about native American boy who wants to be a boxer. He also wants to find his mother. He goes to New York to do both, but gets distracted by two hustlers. I think it was a good story, but it left a lot of things unanswered. It had too many loose ends and never said what happened to a lot of characters. A good book ties everything up. I think a lot of people would like this story. It is a good book if you like to read about boxing, native Americans, or anything else.

This book is awesome! I am the kind of person who hates to read. I usually stop reading books whenever I can, but I couldn't put this book down. I am almost tempted to go check out the book and read it again just for the heck of it. The title is not very catchy THE BRAVE. I mean come on who wants to read a book with that kind of a title, but dont let that discourage you. This book is about a boxer named Sonny Bear who lives on a reservation near Sparta.

Sonny somehow winds up in the middle of a big crack war in New York City. Then Sonny meets Brooks and Spoon which are his key to the heavyweight title. So if you want to see if Sonny becomes the heavyweight champ you will have to go read the book for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book
This book is superb this is better than any other book I have ever read. It is about a kid named sonny that loves to box he want to find his mother in the big city, once he is there he finds two hustlers that take his wallet then a undercover cop try's to get one but sonny nails him with a hook. So the hustlers get him a place to live then Sonny somehow winds up in the middle of a big crack war in New York City that is driving him crazy and all he wants to do is try to see his mother.

IF U DONT READ IT YOU WOULD REGET IT.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Brave = Good Book!
The book that I chose to read was titled The Brave by Robert Lipsyte. This book

was really good and I enjoyed it. To be honest it was the best book I read in a

while. People that are into action, drama, a little comedy, etc, should really check it out.

You will get caught up in it and you will not wan't to stop reading. The Brave is very

good on giving descriptions and telling how it relates to reality. Especially when

racism is involved. The story revolves around Sunny, a half American, half Indian

struggling to stay alive in the world. This story shows just how Sunny stays alive and

how he searches for his mother on the way. The one good thing about Sunny is his

boxing skills. He doesn't like the enviroment that he is in while he was boxing, so he

moved away from the racist people to New York gainning more trouble there than he did

back home. This book has everything that someone could want in a story including

action, fighting, drama, etc. This is a very good written story and has very good details

within the story. Robert Lipsyte is a very talented author who has quite a bit of respect

from me now that I have read his work. Even though this is a great book there still are

some weaknesses within the plot. Sometimes the author changes the position of the story

so fast that it is hard to tell. An example is when Sunny and his friend Doll are in the pizza

place and then it says he is in the store that was across the street earlier on, and it made

me get somewhat confused and have to go back and re-read what had happend. The Brave

is a book that I can't stop talking about and I hope that every book fan goes and checks

this out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
The Team That Couldn't Lose by Matt Christopher is a very interesting book. The characters are Coach Kash, Chip Chase, and the rest of the Cayugans football team. Mr. McFall, an old player who played 60 years ago, has lost his old playbook because his wife sold it. A boy named Danny Livenmore bought it, and was sending plays to the Cayugans.
This book is a must read! It has a good author because he is a very young sports writer. He will probably have some good books in the future.
Matt Christopher is a former sports magazine seller. Also he worked at General Electric. And is a young sports writer for kids. Keep an eye out for more books by Matt Christopher.

I like this book. I liked the part when the team was winning. I did not like the part when Danny was cheating on the plays. I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The winners!
A Review by Erik
This book was an interesting story about a kid's football team that was supposed to lose every game, but they mysteriously get a new play that they used to help them.

Jasper was an old man who recognized the plays. He said they used them over 60 years ago when he was in high school. Chip, the quarterback, asked the high school coach if he was giving them the plays, but he said no.

Every week they got a new play and practiced it. And every week they won the game. Jasper, chip the coach, and the other kids on the team wanted to know who was sending the plays to the coach. They tried and tried to see where the plays were coming from, but the only person who knew wouldn't talk about it.

The characters are like real kids and very interesting. The coach doesn't know a lot about football but that part of what makes the story interesting.

The book is interesting and doesn't get boring. The main story talks about the football games and kids. But also talks about the mystery of who is sending the coach the secret plays and where did these plays come from.

The worst part about the book is that the Author led part of it get boring because parts of the book drug on too long, especially in the middle. But most of the time it was fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet

Book Description

If you love baseball, chances are you love one particular ballpark. Boston fans wax poetic about Fenway Park. Cubs fans are adamant that Wrigley Field is the classic ballfield. Busch Stadium is a hit with folks from Missouri, and Yankee fans are passionate about the House That Ruth Built....

Besides passionate fans, there's one other thing all ballparks -- from the Union Grounds in Brooklyn built in 1862 to the Baltimore Oriole's Camden Yards built in 1992 -- have in common: Each has its own vibrant and unique history.

In Ballpark, Sibert Honor Award winner Lynn Curlee explores both the histories and the cultural significances of America's most famous ballparks. Grand in scope and illustrations, and filled with nifty anecdotes about these "green cathedrals," Ballpark also explores the changing social climate that accompanied baseball's rise from a minor sport to the national pastime. This is a baseball book like no other. ... Read more
