Book Description

Gary Paulsen takes readers along on his maiden voyage, proving that ignorance can be bliss, but also really stupid and incredibly dangerous. He tells of boats that have owned him — good, bad, and beloved — and how they got him through terrifying storms. His spare prose conjures up shark surprises and killer waves, and how it feels to sail under the stars. Falling in love with the ocean set Gary Paulsen on a lifelong learning curve, and readers will understand why his passion has lasted to this day.

4-0 out of 5 stars the review
Caught by the Sea by Gary Paulsen is about Garys life on boats. It starts out when he was on a military troopship heading for the phillipines. One day Gary was woken by his mom to find that a plane had crashed in the ocean near their ship. Gary saw sharks attacking people ion the water but he knew that it was a part of life and he wasn't afraid of them.
After Gary gets out of the Army he goes to California because he feals drawn to the ocean. While there, he was working in hollywood writing stories, while ther he was invited to a weekend party with some other writers on a lake. This is were Gary got his first ride on a sailboat and decides that that is what hes going to do to fulfill his desire to be near the ocean. After buying a sailboat and a day of sailing Gary decides that he wants to go out to sea. While sailing in the sea the wind dies down to nothing and Gary didn't know that, that meant a storm was coming. He stayed out there all day and finally when it came he was stuck out in the ocean while the wind pinned his boat to down parrallel to the water. After the storm Gary starts heading back toward the shore. After that GAry tells mor stories about his life and that someday he wants to sail around Cape Horn. I thought this was an excellent book. For a reader who doesn't know anything about boats this might be a little slow but Gary does an awesome job explaining the parts and what they do so you should feel like you could go sail a boat after reading. I would definetly reccomend this book to other readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a Part of Paulsen's Life
The majority of Paulsen's books are fictional, but this one is autobiographical in nature. Readers are given the impression that Mr.Paulsen has been many places and has done many things that are not included in this book. This is just the "chapter" on the part of him that was captivated by the sea. His first introduction to the sea is on a troopship with his mother at age seven. He views the horrors of a plane crash and the shark attacks upon some of the survivors. Although this was an ugly experience, he is compelled to return to the sea years later. The majority of the book contains descriptions of his battles in his various boats with oceans, storms and winds. Many of these battles are admissions of his own inadequacy. He then undergoes a learning process each time, only to survive stronger and wiser. The experiences are well-written, with graphic details. Some of the language is quite specific to the sport of sailing and might require additional information to achieve a better understanding. This can be an enjoyable book, but may be limited in its apeal due to a topic of somewhat limited interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book by Gary Paulsen
What a neat book!
I'd almost given up on Gary Paulsen autobiographical books after reading his motorcycle-themed book. But yes, Gary shows here he can write an engaging book about his past.
With a wry, understated sense of humor, he takes us through his experiences with boats -- from the first time he was entranced with the sea, to his future plans.
He tells stories of events that most authors would rather forget -- from his initial brash overconfidence, almost getting "taken" by a fast-talking boat salesperson, and how he came close to death several times through lack of knowledge and clues about sea conditions that would be obvious to experienced sailors.
This book is even interesting reading for adults who want to know more about Gary Paulsen.
The title has a nice twist to it -- Paulsen writes how the sea "caught" him in the sense of being his captivated by the sea, and how the sea several times "caught" him in the sense of almost killing him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sailing Away on Words
I like this book. It's a great book .If you like sailboats you will like this book. It's about Gary Paulsen on his sailboats. Gary Paulsen is a great writer. I recommend this book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sea
Caught by the Sea is a very interesting book. This book is a true story based on Gary Paulsen's experiences of the sea. I found so many things out about the sea, like how to tell when there is going to be a big storm or how to set a sail. I learned about parts of a boat and what each part dose. The book was exciting when Gary Paulsen struggled to live in the most dangerous kinds of weather conditions. Overall this book was very intriguing. I think people who want to learn more about the sea should read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
I purchased this book for my 3 and 5 year old grandsons. It is probably their favorite book. They can't put it down! I have never seen such a clever book for children. They love using the steering wheel, filling car w/gas, popping the cork at the end of the race, etc. If your child likes race cars, this is a great book for them. I let the 5 year old look at it by himself, but I always supervise the 3 year old--he doesn't always remember to be gentle w/pop up books. And I still can't believe it was a "bargain book"--it's an incredible value and tons of fun for children. I also recommend "Garage" by the same author. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars review of Teddy Bear's Picnic by Megan Fleming
The Teddy Bear's Picnic was a fairly good book. I needed to read it two times to really understand it. It would be confusing for kids under 8 years old. The way the author and illustrator showed the humans dressed in teddy bear costumes was a clever contrast to the teddy bears wearing human masks. It kept this reader guessing as to who the real teddy bears were. The illustrations were vibrant in color and followed with the authors text. Overall it was a fun and playfyul book beautifully illustrated, but hard to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book to share with your child
If you and your child (or even if you don't have a child) love the song and story of the Teddy Bear's picnic, then you will adore this book.

The text is pretty straight forward - as well all expect it to be. But the illustrations are just delightful - full colour on every page, teddies everywhere you look and getting into all manner of interesting things. This is what is so charming about this book - the sheer delight of finding a bear and seeing what it is doing - is it eating cake? Climbing a tree? Falling asleep? Avoiding the children in disguise?

It may be a difficult book to find, but it is just lovely, and well worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book!
"If you go down in the woods today You're sure of a big surprise If you go down in the woods today You'd better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain because Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic."

This is such a fun book to read to my kids! The rhyming verse has a nice rythem to it, but its the pictures we enjoy the most. They make you feel like you are peeking through the trees at this wonderful picnic! This book is a treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb book!

Book Description

Not only children, but also adults who read to them can learn from and enjoy this introduction to the visual delights of fine art, the fourth book in the much-acclaimed COME LOOK WITH ME series.

COME LOOK WITH ME: World of Play pairs quality art reproductions with thought-provoking questions, encouraging children to enter the painting or sculpture and explore it through the artist’s eyes, through the eyes of the people depicted, and through the child’s own imagination.

Author Gladys S. Blizzard has chosen twelve fascinating works of art ranging from an ancient Minoan fresco and a classic Winslow Homer to a wacky modern basketball game sculpted by Red Grooms in painted wood.

This book can be shared by adults and children at home, in the classroom, in a library or museum.Wherever the setting, readers will enjoy this new way of looking at art: at the eager Mexican youngsters diving for falling candies and fruits in Diego Rivera’s Pinata; at Pieter Bruegel’s Children’s Games, where a townful of children engage in more than eighty different games of the 1500’s; at Elaine de Kooning’s Baseball Players, who, in a flash of color, make a deciding play at home plate. What children learn here by looking can spark in them a lifetime of appreciation for the fine arts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
I'm a big sports fan and I loved "The Kid From Courage." It tells the story of a junior tennis player who is trying hard to succeed at tennis. He meets an old man who becomes his coach, and it's very cool how they have to deal with a bunch of stuff, but they don't give up. I won't give it away, but it's exciting how the book ends when he has to play the biggest tournament of his whole life. My best friend is reading it now and he says it is fantastic. I think all kids who like sports will like reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book for young readers and their parents
"The Kid From Courage" is a terrific book for young readers -- especially kids from 8 to 16 -- but also for older teenagers, and even young adults and parents.
It succeeds on several levels. The story of an aspiring tennis player is a riveting drama with unexpected twists and turns. Will he succeed, or will the many obstacles stymie him?
On several occasions I was nearly overcome with tears as I
feared he would fail. I so much hoped he and his maligned but savvy oldtimer coach would prove the naysayers wrong.
Written in the first person, "The Kid From Courage" tells
his story as only a teenager, with his hopes and fears and joys,
can. He does suffer quite a few setbacks, but they only make
the story more believable and poignant. Those setbacks -- and eventual triumph -- also provide valuable lessons about hard work, dedication, diplomacy, self-belief, family values, courage, and loyalty.
The author has used those lessons productively at the end of the book. There for each chapter he poses questions and a suggested essay for readers to test their knowledge and writing skills.
"The Kid From Courage" is an inspiring and uplifting story, one that I highly recommend for your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Recommend This Book
My twelve year old son enjoys playing tennis, so I picked up "The Kid From Courage", as I'm trying to encourage him to read more. I was delighted that he absolutely loved the book. He has actually been telling his friends about the book, a first for him! Although I haven't read the book myself, I highly recommend it based on my son's positive reaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Liked This Book
I am an eleven year old tennis player from southern California and I thought this book was outstanding. It really inspires young tennis players to work hard and reach their goals. I would recommend this book if your child likes soccer or if you are hoping your child will like soccer, otherwise not such a great book.... I thought it was cute but definitely something a child who likes soccer can only appreciate

2-0 out of 5 stars Just mailing it in at this point
The original "Froggy Gets Dressed" book was extremely clever. But this book is the weakest brand extension since Lego clothing. It includes the basic Froggy elements (sound effects starting with z, authority figures yelling "FRROOGGYY", and our noble protagonist turning more red than green) but you have to wonder when the most original part of the story is Froggy picking his nose. Of course, if your child likes Froggy and likes soccer they will love the book, but I wish the authors had put a bit more effort into it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute!
An adorable book. Froggy books are great...if you like the others this is a must have; especially if you knwo someone who loves soccer!

5-0 out of 5 stars ATTENTION SOCCER MOMS!

Book Description

Inspired by a real event, this is the fictional tale of a little girl whose parents win Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction. When the child begins to play with it, she becomes her team's star. Meanwhile, "The Great One" goes into the greatest slump of his career. Realizing he needs the stick more than she does, the girl returns it to him, and Gretzky gets over his thousand-goal hump.

Peter Maloney and Felicia Zekauskas really did win a Gretzky hockey stick at an auction, and The Great One subsequently did go into a slump. The authors have turned their adventure into THE book for young sports fans, with clever rhyming verse, witty pictures, and a heartfelt theme about what it means to give. They will donate a percentage of proceeds from this book to the New York Presbyterian Hearst Burn Center for Pediatric Burn Care, which held the original auction.

American Bookseller made the duo's first book, Redbird at Rockefeller Center, a fall 1997 Pick of the Lists, and called it "reminiscent of Dr. Seuss classics." With The Magic Hockey Stick, they've done it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for hockey lovers or not hockey lovers
My 3 year old loves hockey and it's hard to find hockey books for children, but not only was this an amazing find for the hockey part, but it is an amazing Seuss-like story that we read over and over and over. The story is so cute and it is written so well and the hero of the story is a girl hockey player, which makes Mom proud! My son, and all of us LOVE this book. Thank you Peter and Felicia for writing such an amazing childrens story about a time honored sport!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book for your little scoring line
It's cute, so your non-hockey-loving wife will like it and it's hockey so it passes the most important test of all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A child's book that has it all, for my kids and for me!
This book is so enjoyable it really makes me look forward to storytime. The story, based in truth, is one adults can identify with and kids find amusing. The rhyme scheme reminds me of Dr. Suess and the illustrations are first rate. The little girl in the story learns how to help others, in this case the Great Wayne Gretzky, at the expense of her own good fortune. It shows an intact loving family (a rarity in today's culture), shows that little girls can be the star of a story, and can play hockey. If you like hockey, love kids, or remember reading Dr. Suess as a kid, you'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treat for kids and adults
My 2 and 4 year old like hockey and they love this book. We picked it up at the library and were very pleasantly surprised to find such a refreshingly modern book. It is about a family that accidently end up buying Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction. The daughter plays hockey and the stick helps her to play better. But in the mean time, Wayne Gretzky goes into a slump without it. The girl decides she must return the stick to him. I cannot do the book justice though. It is a rhyming verse book that is so easy to read and there is alot of humor in it, yet it has a nice lesson. My kids have tons of books but they love this one and it is one that I do not get sick of reading. Thank you to the author's for something new and refreshing.

Book Description

"And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville-mighty Casey has struck out." Those lines have echoed through the decades, the final stanza of a poem published pseudonymously in the June 3, 1888, issue of the San Francisco Examiner. Its author would rather have seen it forgotten. Instead, Ernest Thayer's poem has taken a well-deserved place as an enduring icon of Americana.Christopher Bing's magnificent version of this immortal ballad of the flailing 19th-century baseball star is rendered as though it had been newly discovered in a hundred-year-old scrapbook. Bing seamlessly weaves real and trompe l'oeil reproductions of artifacts-period baseball cards, tickets, advertisements, and a host of other memorabilia into the narrative to present a rich and multifaceted panorama of a bygone era. A book to be pored over by children, treasured by aficionados of the sport-and given as a gift to all ages: a tragi-comic celebration of heroism and of a golden era of sport. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic baseball poem with museum-like illustrations
Our elementary school library currently has three versions of the classic baseball poem, "Casey at the Bat," by three different illustrators. This one was added because of its well-deserved status as a Caldecott Honor book (for illustrations).

Since I usually make an annual Spring tradition of reading "Casey" to some classes, I can tell you that this edition by Christopher Bing works very nicely for group read-alouds. However in this setting kids miss out on the many interesting--but smaller--details that Bing has added to each page, such as a faded newspaper clipping about "the barbaric practice of using only a single ball throughout the nine innings of play..." Students are also drawn to the 1880s currency--bills and coins--shown on the page that says, "We'd put up even money now with Casey at the bat."

Christopher Bing has created a mini-museum display that many children will devour like an "I Spy" book, particularly if they are baseball fans or history buffs.

If you are not familiar with this wonderful poem, I'd put it in the same "classic" status as "The Night Before Christmas," by Clement C. Moore; "Paul Revere's Ride," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; or "The Cremation of Sam McGee," by Robert Service.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Presentation
Christopher Bing has taken Ernest L Thayer's poem, Casey at the Bat, and presented it in a most creative and ingenious format, as a hundred year old scrapbook. The poem itself is almost secondary to his amazing and inspired artwork that includes newpaper articles and advertisements from the Mudville Sunday Monitor, period baseball cards, game tickets, money and other memorabilia, that gives readers a marvelous view of the baseball world in the late 1880s. This is a book to savor and both youngsters and adults will find themselves mesmerized by the rich authenticity and historical detail as they find something new and exciting to read and explore each time they open the book. Casey at the Bat is a wonderful read aloud story younger children will enjoy. But it will have much greater meaning for baseball fans 10 and older, who will revel in the enormous amount of information and fun facts that Mr Bing presents. As a gift or addition to your own home library, you just can't go wrong with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
My thirteen-year-old daughter has developed two loves recently - poetry and baseball. At school, she gave Casey at the Bat as her dramatic reading. Well, she sure was happy to find this book. Illustrated in the form of a scrapbook from 1888, each two pages include a two page-wide picture of a page from the Mudville Monitor (June 3, 1888) and part of Ernest Lawrence Thayer's famous poem. Along the way, the reader is treated to many other items in the scrapbook, including vintage baseball cards, tickets, newspaper articles, advertisements and bric-a-brac.

Yep, this is a wonderful book, filled with lots of surprises and some wonderful illustrating. If you have a young baseball fan in your home, then you must get this book; you will love it and your baseball fan will - mine did! Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Casey at the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year
I love this poem- ever since I've been reading it at the age of 8! Christopher Bing's illustrations bring it to life for those who can't imagine sitting in the stands at this sad game. They jump off the page at you and you are there! A collectors item.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well-Done Timeless Classic
Originally submitted to a newspaper in 1883, Ernest Lawrence Thayer's poem "Casey at the Bat" has become an American classic. In essence, it is baseball's equivalent version of "Twas the Night Before Chritsmas."

"Casey at the Bat" has become a part of pop culture, and is still one of the most talked about stories of all time. Christopher Bing takes the wonderful classic, and adds in some amazing illustrations to make for a fantastic children's book. Presenting the poem with a myriad of sepia toned images is exceptional. The book reads like a scrapbook, with amazing-looking old newspaper clippings that reflect the times of the story. There are also pictures of old currency and replica baseball tickets to give it a more complete feel.

This book is put together quite nicely. Again, the illustrations are perfect, and the scrapbook appearance gives it a genuine look of something that you will want to treasure with your children. This is a classic poem that every person should have the benefit of hearing. Christopher Bing's version is the best I've ever seen, and is a must for any family with children. There will be plenty of joy in your home with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars S.O.R. LOSER REVIEW
This book S.O.R. Losers by Avi was about a school that is really big on sports and famous for not losing a single game all season. That all changes when some seventh grader non-jocks form a soccer team. Their new team is terrible. Their parents and the school cheer them on and insist that they do better. The crowd's cheers really helped them do a lot better than they were doing.
I would recommend this book because it shows how much people have confidence within themselves. Why I would also recommend this book is because it was written by Avi, he is a great guy and writes great books.

Title; S.O.R. Loser
By: Aaron
Have you ever been forced to playa sport? If so S.O. R Loser by Avi is the perfect book for you. A young man named Sitrow loves school but hates sports. he has to see his way through playing soccer. The kid named Sitrow was going to pick a sport for the school team but he missed baseball, basketball, tennis and football. The only thing is left is soccer. The only thing he hates about the school rules are that you must play one sport a year. His coach Mr. Lesster (also the social studies the teachers) push the team through their unlucky year.
Their parents are behind them all the way.
They had practice a couple days later. They really needed help. They could not even score on their own goal. When Sitrow gets home he starts complaining at dinner about how stupid that soccer is. The parents don't care they think that some exercise is good for the smart young man. The next day when he enters his 8th period which is Social Studies and which Mr. Lesster is the teacher. Mr. lesster announces that they are going out side to practice soccer.
They had a practice, a week from that day and their 1st game and it was bad 32-0. The coach was mad but he knew that it was only the first game. The next 4 games they lost. Now he whole school was cheering for them to win. The principal was telling them that the soccer team never lost. Will they keep losing or will the come back and be victorious.

4-0 out of 5 stars S.O.R. Losers
This book is about 7th grade boys who were modern misfits. They went to a school where sports ruled, but they didn't like sports, knew they weren't good and didn't care. They were all forced to join the same soccer team and play other schools. Read about their losing streak and their battle with the school. Full of sardonic witticisms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apple Computer gave us an heir to the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew
My wife and I always check out the books we give our boys (ages 8 and 10).We grew up on the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, and we loved the pleasure those books brought us.Until recently, we'd been unable to find anything new on the market in the way of great mystery/adventure fiction. You know what I mean - pure, unadulterated, fast-paced fun. There are a lot of books out there about kids with "issues", which is fine - they're certainly needed. But if alot of the kids today are anything like my wife and I were when we were young, then there's a need for a modern Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew.

We'd all but given up on finding anything like that, until I noticed a teaser on an uncle/nephew mystery writing team in last week's Apple eNews email from Apple Computer.I checked out the full story on Daniel J. Hale and Matthew LaBrot on Apple.com's Pro site.I was intrigued.I ordered both books in the Zeke Armstrong series.I read both Red Card and Green Streak in a single day (when I should have been making sales calls). They blew me away. They took me back to my youth.I gave the books to my wife. She stayed up until 3 AM reading them. They blew her away. They took her back to her youth. We gave them to our boys. They devoured them. For the past two days, all they've been able to talk about is Zeke and Pow Wow, Zeke and Pow Wow, Zeke and Pow Wow.My wife and I have never seen them so excited about books.

At last!In Zeke Armstrong, we have a worthy successor to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Thanks to Apple Computer for bringing him to our attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool mystery novel
I read this book after Mr. Hale spoke at our library last year.Even if you don't like soccer, you'll still love Red Card. It has action and adventure, and it's a really good mystery.I didn't figure it out until the end...

5-0 out of 5 stars Agatha Award winner !
Okay, I got into the Zeke Armstrong Mystery series backward.I read Green Streak first.I loved it.My ten year old son loved it.I ordered Red Card and received it yesterday morning. Like with Green Streak, once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.I had it finished by the time my son came home from school. He picked it up and kept reading until HE finished it. We both understand why this book won the Agatha Award, and we expect Green Streak to win even more awards.Daniel J. Hale and Matthew LaBrot have definitely got something going with the Zeke Armstrong Mystery series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, a great find!
Mr. Hale came to our school to tell us about this book.I reccomend it to anybody who likes mysteries.I don't really like soccer, but I still give this book two thumbs up

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang on for This Fun Ride
Zeke Armstrong is playing in a soccer tournament with his team, the Dallas Sundogs.Things are going well, until his coach gets thrown out of a game for loosing his temper with a ref.The next morning, Zeke discovers that the coach has just been shot. After he's rushed to the hospital, another attempt is made on his life.It has to be one of the team's fathers, but whom? The police think they have their man, but Zeke is convinced they're wrong. Can he make the other parents believe him and save his coach's life?

I'll read a good mystery aimed at any age group, and I loved this one.The main character is lots of fun.I'm not a big sports fan, but the descriptions of the soccer games held my interest and were easy to follow. In fact, a book that could have been awash in characters did such a good job of introducing them that I had no trouble keeping everyone straight. And the climax had me turning pages as fast as possible to find out what how everything would end.

This is an entertaining debut that left me wanting more.I recommend this book to anyone of any age looking for a good mystery. ... Read more
