Great Book
James and Deloris met in high school after attending a basketball game. They married on Feb. 17, 1963. Michael one of four children was born. The youngest son of the Jordan household, baseball was Michaels favorite sport. One day his father put up two wooden backboards and baskets and gave the boys a basketball. They called it the Rack. Michael practiced often to try to keep up with his brothers. When in high school it was recommended he attend a basketball camp known as a Five
Star Camp. Education was always important to his parents, they knew that unless he was a good student all of his athletic talent would go to waste. In the fall of 1981 Michael enrolled in the University of North Carolina. After playing for three years there was little left for Michael to accomplish. He decided to turn pro and on June 19, 1984 he was picked by the Chicago Bulls. He made history and won championships for the Bulls and won consecutive MVP awards.

I liked this book very much. It is very hard to shorten in length the information this book has given me about the life of this great basketball star.

The saddest part of the book was when they talked about his father dying. From what the police could piece together James had apparantley pulled of the highway to take a nap and was attacked by two eighteen year old boys. They were later arrested and charged for the murder of James Jordan. Michael retired to spend more time with his family.

Mia Hamm and How She Started
I would recommend this book not only to people who love soccer, but to everyone who enjoys a true story about a great athlete and role model. The story of Mia Hamm is basically about how she was introduced to soccer and how she follows her dream to be the best women's soccer player in the world.

The book is really better than it looks like!
On teh field with Mia Hamm by Matt Christopher was a very goodbook. I didn't have a very good idea who Mia Hamm really was though.The only thing I know is a professional soccer player. I aw the book and it looked pretty interesting. I'm about a quarter of the way through the book and I'm liking it so far. Usually I don't read books , let alone a whole book.

I like this book because i like baseball and i also like Derek Jeter. This story tells how Derek Jeter wanted to be the yankees shortstop it shows how he had to acommplished his goals by going through different obstacles in his way to make it to the major league.one of the obstacles was when he got drafted in 1992 but did not play until 1995. this book also talks about his great awards like becoming the american league rookie of the year.he also won the world series a couple of times. before Derek Jeter played for the yankees the yankees did not win a world series in 15 long years.so Derek Jeter is one of the big reasons that the yankees have been winning the world series.

As with other juvenile biographies in the Matt Christopher "On the Field/Court with..." series, this look at New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter emphasizes work ethic and family life as much as it does achievements on the baseball diamond. Since Jeter dreamed of being the Yankee's shortstop since he was a little boy, the first half of the book follows the "dreams come true" motif, while the second half of the book, covering how Jeter's Yankees won three World Series in his first four seasons in the Major Leagues comes under the "succeeding beyond your wildest dreams" heading. In relating key moments for Jeter at bat, on the bases or in the field, there is an admirable attempt to provide the details and not merely refer to things you might remember having seen on television. But there is always something of an educational purpose behind these sports biographies, so young readers will also learn that despite all his talent, Jeter had to work very hard to become a baseball star. Being considered the top high school player in the country does not mean you are ready for professional baseball, even at the lowest minor league level. Young readers will be informed to learn that Jeter's fielding style and batting swing had to be readjusted to make him a better player. They might also learn something from the relationship he enjoyed with his parents and his attitude towards people and school, as well as towards sports, that make him such an admired sports figure.

I believe this biography is written by Glen Stout, although it is copyrighted by Catherine M. Christopher for whom Matt ChristopherTM is a trademark. It only sounds confusing. One of the fun thing with these books is that they are not written "down" to the level of their readers. You should always keep an eye out for words that will send kids running to their dictionaries. In this book the biggie is found in the following sentence: "Near the end of the season he magnanimously offered to move to third base so Derek could play shortstop for the varsity." Other titles in this series look at Kobe Bryant, John Elway, Wayne Gretzky, Mia Hamm, Lisa Leslie, Tara Lipinski, Sammy Sosa, and Tiger Woods to name but a few. "Matt Christopher" is, by its own admission, the number one sports series for kids and based on the few books I have read to date, I have no reason to suspect there are engaging in hyperbole.

Chip does it again
Chip is the bravest, most talented kid ever.He goes to a steel plant in a town hes never been to. He plays on a baseball team where everone is older than him, all when he finds his first crush. Peggy Armstrong is about as close as Chip gets to being interested in girls in these early Chip Hilton books, but she is a match for him. Too bad he has to go back to Valley Falls at the end of the book. He could have been manager, star and gotten the girl, too. Good reading for all kids--girls included. ... Read more

Best book in the series
I have read just about all of the 20+ volumes in the Hilton series and this has always been my favorite. In addition to being good sports stories, Chip always had to overcome some evil forces to triumph in the end. The evil is so strong in this story, that I want to punch the air in satisfaction when Chip wins out - no matter how many times I have read the book. If you are new to the series, however, I would suggest you start with the first story - "Touchdown Pass" - and go from there.

Good But Not the Original
This volume seems to be one of the favorites of Chip Hilton fans everywhere. The forces of evil mobilized against Chip are particularly bad and the final scene actually a bit violent (well, at least by the standards of fifty years ago). Read and see how far we, as a people, have fallen in half a century. Of course, better still, read the original. The current edition has been updated to satisfy the dogmas of feminism and the cliches of youth culture. Gosh, doesn't anyone get that it was those very forces which destroyed the world of Chip and Coach Rockwell and gave us America of 1999?!

Good wholesome values. Excellent reading for young people

Bio of Kobe Bryant

Kobe's childhood watching professional basketball games made him pick up a basketball for the first time. He was learning how to shoot and dribble. His basketball education was a unique combination of lessons on basic fundamentals, one-on-one game against his dad, and keen observation and analysis of the world's best players. Kobe learned his lesson well, and at age 18 he was given the chance to prove it. He was drafted into the NBA when he was fresh out of high school. A superb juvenile biography of Laker star Kobe Bryant
First off, you have to love any juvenile book, even a biography of Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, that uses the word "exponentially." Obviously there is no dumbing down the writing by Glenn Stout. But apart from the style "On the Court with . . . Kobe Bryant" has a substantive point to make. When Bryant finished his senior season of basketball in high school he had to make a decision about going to college or trying to jump right to the NBA. Stout does a solid job of explaining both sides of the controversy, but he has also set up the decision in terms of Bryant's life. The first part of the book talks about the important of Bryant's father, a former NBA player, who gave his son not only some nice basketball genes but also taught him about the game. Stout emphasizes that Bryant's understanding of the game and his work ethic were as important as his physical skills in preparing him for the NBA. Also, when their son was suddenly a teenage millionaire in the pros, the Bryant family moved to L.A. to provide a support system that a lot of other phenoms never had and certainly could have used. Hopefully any young player who wants to grow up to be like Kobe will understand the lessons embedded in this biography, because, as Charles Barkley and many others have repeated noted, most of the kids in the NBA today simply do not know how to play the game. Bryant is an exception to the rule and this book clearly explains why. I also like the fact that most of the book is not about Kobe Bryant in the NBA, but pays as much attention to his high school career and to the time he spent living in Italy. Young readers will not just read about what Bryant has done but will understand the hows and whys of his success. This book includes 10 black & white photographs from Bryant's career, along with his NBA statistics through the Lakers's first championship in 2000 and a short list of career highlights. Strike Three!
WILLIAM"CHIP"HILTON the high school sports all star has to try lto turn Nick Trullo's attitude around, let coach HENERY"ROCK"ROCKWELL deal with itor just stay away him while still traing Soapy Smith to be a catcher instead of a right fielder, and train himself to be a pitcher instead of a catcher with some tips from Del Bennett State baseball coach and friend of Coach Rockwell. From the beginning Chip, Soapy, Speed Morris, and Ted Williams were enimies sith Nick and Carl Carey. Chet Stewart the assistant coach ne at once that that Nick was trying to help Carl try to beat Chip out of the lead catcher job. During the games chip called the pitches and Nick didn't even shake them off he just pitched a different pitch. Chip, Taps Browning, Soapy and Speed all went to a Spring Festival at State where they went to see their future coaches. That's where he met Del Bennett and he asked him for some pitching lessons. He asked him not to tell the rock about it and because he wanted to tell him when he was ready. Chip built a strike zone on his fence but when he got his first chance with Soapy

Chip still is a winner
Things don't change much in 50 years. This book still works with kids and adults. I like the new updates-just enough to make it contemporary. It would be a great gift for Little League friends and families.

Another Great Chip Hilton Story!
Strike Three! offers great baseball action but, more importantly, it's a story about friendship, courage, and learning to extend our hands to others. Chip bridges the gap between the South and the West sides of Valley Falls with courage, faith, and friendship.

Great Book! Read the real ones!

Chip Hilton scores big in Freshman Quarterback. Some of the problems he faces are as relevent today as they were in the original writings. The updates are great and still don't detract from the quality and message Clair Bee originally intended.
