5-0 out of 5 stars At the plate with Sammy Sosa
I think this book is very good because it's very educational for us kids.I really recommend this book to other kids because it gives an authur's message of hard work really pays off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This great book on Sammy Sosa is superior in every way to most of the "cash-in" paperbacks written on baseball superstars. Well-written, engaging and full of information, Sosa may not be baseball's Superman, but he is an interesting guy profiled in this interesting book. Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sammy Sosa review
I liked the biography that I read because I learned that he has turned into one of the most homerun hitters of all time.
This book has some interesting facts about his life I was especially surprised to learn that when he was seven he wanted to help his mother inside the house instead of playing with his brothers and sisters.
I would highly recommend it to people who like to read about other people and sport books. I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classis Sports Biography book
I enjoy reading all of Matt Christopher's books because they are fun to read while at the same time discuss interesting topics. This book was especially interesting. It is a sports biography about the famous baseball player Sammy Sosa. At the Plate With Sammy Sosa is a great book because it goes from all the hardships Sammy faced from his childhood in the Dominican Republic through his early years as a pro when he wasn't very popular to now when he is an international icon. This really is a great book especially for a younger audience. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All Star Fever: A Peach Stree Mudders Story
This is a good book if you like books that are about sports. The best part is when he made the all-star team. Earlier on in the story he was nervous because scouts that picked that all-star team were watching. On the last game he almost didn't make it to the game, because he couldn't find his bike helmet. He almost missed the game until he told his mom he disobeyed her and she gave him his helmet. This is a good lesson about telling the truth and following your parent's rules.

4-0 out of 5 stars On the Mound with Randy Johnson
On the mound with Randy Johnson by Matt Christopher is great. I think it's great because it has a lot of action. I also like it because it's about sports. It's about Randy Johnson. Randy Johnson is a pitcher in the majors. I liked it and I think if you read it you will too.
The book is easy to read. Because there are not a lot of hard words. In the middle it has black and white photos. But the photos are easy to imagine in color. The photos are of Randy Johnson playing baseball. Each photo has a caption under it.
I think Matt Chirstopher wrote this book because he wanted to show people that even though Randy Johnson played for a not very good team, he still played well. I think that after reading this book you don't have to be on a good team to play well. If you read this book and like it, there're other Matt Christopher biographies.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Mound with Randy Johnson
The name of my book is On the Mound with Randy Johnson by Matt Christopher. It has 116 pages, and it's a biography.
The setting is Seattle, in the years of 1982-2000. The plot tells how Randy Johnson got so good a being a pitcher.
The reason I like this book is that it's a bioghraphy. Another reason is that Randy Johnson is a good player. Also, I like that, he's won a world series.
I think this good for people that are 10-21 years old. If you like biographies, you should check out this book, On the Mound with Randy Johnson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
All the kids sports books written by Matt Christopher are great! Matt Christopher has turned my son into an avid reader. If you have a child that loves sports.....buy Matt Christopher's books!

4-0 out of 5 stars Championship Ball Rocked My Court
Championship Ball was a great book! It is mainly about a boy, named Chip Hilton, who goes through his junior year with a broken leg. When he breaks his leg he can't play basketball so, he becomes the team manager. At first, he thinks he will have a terrible year but, later he finds out that he has learned more about basketball with his broken leg than he ever will. He learns about friendships and coaching more in this basketball season than his whole junior year put together. Chip coaches the team all the way to the championship. That's where Chip gets the winning ball. His team tells him about what a great manager he was. That's when Chip finally realizes that he had been the greatest manager ever.
In my opinion Championship Ball rocked my court! Chip Hilton has a great group of friends. His friends never do anything bad and never put anyone down. This book has great tone. The author puts in a great sense of joy throughout the whole book. There are only about a few places that I can point out were the author has used bad tone. This is a great book for boys who want to learn about basketball and yet, there is many great examples of doing what is right. So I say, get it and see what happens to my favorite manager, Chip Hilton.

5-0 out of 5 stars These updates are wonderful
There's a good blend of the past and present in this book. In comparing it to the original, I like the updates that have been done without offending us older readers. The spirit of teamwork is still relevant to any age. I still get misty-eyed at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Ken Griffy Jr
I think this book is a good one because it's talking about
how Ken Griffy Jr. played baseball. His old teamates Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez and Tino Martinez really wanted him to stay in Seattle.
Now he's meeting new teammates like Barry Larkin,Sean Casy,
and Pokey Resse. He's still getting in the playoffs. His father
wanted him in Cincinati. Ken said the Yankees are so easy to beat. He still misses the Mariners.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Like a Leftey
This book is a good one to read if you like to read about the Seattle Mariners. They list Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez and how they got their victory and got into the playoffs. It talks about when Ken Griffey, Jr. was a kid and how he grew up with his father, who played for the Cincinnati Reds. He practiced with his dad sometimes in Yankee Stadium, until his dad couldn't strike him out anymore. It says who he got married to, his likes, his dislikes. All in all, I rate this a 5 star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting and fabulous book!
On a 1 to 10 scale I would give this book a 10 because it is a funny, family sports book. Ken Griffey Jr.'s dream was to play in the major Leagues like his father, and he achieved it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Inspiration
"Little Lefty" changed my life back in the 1992-93 school year (fifth grade for me), and for that alone the book deserves a 5-Star rating. This was the book, written by the late Matt Christopher (an early childhood favorite of mine), that inspired me to begin a writing career.

This is a story about a little kid named Bill who wanted to play baseball. He is the smallest member on his team, yet he can throw harder than any of the other players, including the regular pitcher. After hearing the story about "Little Lefty," a pint-sized pitcher who made the big leagues, he is determined to work his way up to some playing time. But just when he is about to get his big break, a horse-riding accident sidelines him. Two different worlds come to a head because of this - will he ever get to prove himself on the mound, or will one of his friends (who doesn't play baseball) convince him to just give it all up?

This was the first Matt Christopher book I had ever read, and I was totally enthralled. Shortly after, I said to myself, "I know what I want to do when I grow up. I want to be just like Matt Christopher. I want to write baseball stories." And so began my writing career.

While I have moved onto writing about other subject matters beyond baseball, I still thank my lucky stars that I was lucky enough to stumble upon this book. Matt Christopher's baseball stories became an important part of my life both personally and professionally at a young age, and "Little Lefty" is the one that started it all.

Thank you, Matt Christopher. God bless you, my friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever
This is the best book ever Author Matt Christopher If you like baseball you'll like this book. It is about a boy that is small for his age and left-handed, but he loves baseball so much that he won't quit. He was a very good pitcher, but he only played two to three inninga each game. Because he was so small, the coach didn't play him a lot. He broke his arm riding a horse. He couldn't wait to get the cast offso he could get back to playing baseball. By the end of the season he was well and he ended up winning a big game for his team as the last pitcher. It was my favorite sports book ever! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Comeback Challenge was Great!
I thought that The Comeback Challenge was great. Mark, who was on the scorpions team, was angry that his parents, who kept on fighting, and they each wanted him to live with him or her, because they were getting a divorce. Currently, he had to live with his grandparents, until it was settled. Also, the team captain Lance, didn't really like Mark that much. At the end Mark stays with his grandparents another year. Mark was the one to tell the judge that. Also at the end the problem with Lance was solved, and Mark was elected captain for the next soccer season. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
The Chip Hilton series is a series of sports books. In the early books in the series a young man named Chip Hilton is in High School. Later in the series he is in college. Chip is an extremely bright young man who is also a star in baseball, basketball, and football. Chip is a leader on and off the court. These books teach children about morals and ethics.
In the previous book, called Tournament Crisis, State wins the Holiday Invitational Tournament. However, during the last few minutes of the championship game Chip hurts his knee.
This book, called Hardcourt Upset, begins where the last book left off. Chip is still injured from the tournament. He is sidelined for the first two games after the winter break. Because Chip is such a great athlete and mental leader and cant play, the team loses both these games.
Basketball however, is not his only problem. In Chip's college town of University, there have been several convenience store robberies. His best friend "Soapy" Smith is being accused of committing these crimes. Soapy is taken into custody of the police and detectives to see if the convenience store employees recognize him as the robber. Eventually Soapy gets a chance to explain that he is innocent because he was changing a tire at the time of the robberies. Chip decides to help find the people who helped Soapy change his tire.
At the next basketball game against Tech, Soapy recognizes the people who helped him. The Tech team players tell the detectives they were the ones who helped Soapy change the tire. Now the detectives must look further to find the robbers.
Chip and his pals from college agreed to watch the local convenience stores every night. One night when it was Chip's turn, he saw a man with two flat tires. When he asked the man if he needed help, he responded with a gasp as he heard some police sirens. Then he said in a deep nervous voice, "no, I'll just drive home with the two flats."
Chip thought this was very suspicious and jumped into the trunk of the car. When the driver parked the car in the garage, he jumped out and looked around. He saw a bag full of something he could not make out and got out of there. He called the detectives and they were there with Soapy in ten minutes.
When they rang the doorbell, an old man answered the door. Chip knew immediately that this wasn't the man had been driving the car. He asked, "Do you have a son?" "No, but there is a teenager who lives here." So they woke up the teenager and then asked him a few questions. After a few questions it was clear. This was the thief. He had a red wig and a mask in the garage. They also found all the money stolen from the stores.
Hardcourt Upset was an awesome book. It shows that if you think you can you will succeed in your goals. It also shows that even a small school can be a big school in some things.

5-0 out of 5 stars j's review
This book was awesome!!! It is a very good book if you like sports books. However, it does not only have to do with sports. It shows how much Chip Hilton cares about his friend Soapy Smith. I deafinitly reccoment this book!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hardcourt Upset
Tre explains almost exactly how I feel about this book. Except for one subject, when Tre says that you should worry about your problems I think that in this situation you should help your friend out first. Because the two of them had been best friends since youth.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tre's review
Hardcourt Upset is really good sports book. Although it is sometimes hard to keep up with, it is very interesting. It starts off a little slow but when the season starts it is really exciting. The book us a good for those who like sports. Reading this book does not take very long at all. Most of the words are in this book are not hard, and the book is not hard to understand. There are many characters in this in this story. These characters are very interesting and different in many ways, but they all got along well. In this book, the lessons taught are the most meaningful and priceless examples of what is right about life that I have ever read. One of the lessons is to take care of your probems before you worry about someone else's. Almost all of the games are close and exciting. Eventhough the team had many injuries and off court problems, they still well in games and in tournaments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Return of the Home Run Kid
Sylvester Coddmyer III was a pretty nice kid who grew up in a nice family. He was an only child at the age of 12. In the past year Sylvester had an almost perfect homerun season, he had Mr. baruth's coaching tips to help him get through. The next year came along and there was no Mr. Barthum to help him out. He started out as a bench warmer, if he ever got to play it would just be for an inning or so. One day on the way home from practice a man named Cheeko said do you want me to help you out a little. Sylvester said sure, they practiced about 4 times aweek and befor you know it Sylvester is back hitting homeruns. Inside Sylvester really wondered who this Cheeko guy was anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is cool how he hit home runs as he did last season.
Last season, Sylvester Codmyre III hit home runs every time but once, when he was up. But in his second season, again he started out slumping. Then he started hitting them back into home runs and he started being good at defense again. It is a good book because it's the second version but Sylvester has a different helper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Undercover Tailback
The book Undercover Tailback by Matt Christopher was great. I like it because it was about football. First my favorite characters was Parker Nolan because he is cool and a lot like me. My favorite part is when Nolan finds out some ones looked in the coach's playbook, also the other team always beating them and Parker thought the person who looked in the book might be from the other team. To conclude, I would recommend this to any one who likes football.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kudzu's Kids
First of all, I didn't like the book very much! I wouldn't recommend it for 5th graders, but I would for younger kids. I think younger kids would like it because they tend to be more gullible, and this book is sort of corny. There are a few parts that I like. One of them is when Spike is looking at the thief in the coach's office. The other one is when the Kudzus come back to beat the Panthers in a clutch game. ... Read more
