5-0 out of 5 stars Hey It's Penlty Shot
Do you think sports are cool? You will change your mind when you read Matt Christopher's Penalty shot. This book is about a boy named Jeff and his team. They start as a team that loses every game and think their very bad.
The next year they finally win a game. They also go all the way to the championship game. They win the championship game. It shows that 1 team thinks there bad then they will be bad if they think there good they will be good. And accomplished great goals for the team.
This book is a book that is just right for you. Some other books that Matt Christopher he wrote are Bike rally, Soccer scoop, Miracle at the plate, and The Brush `Iim back pitch. This book reminds me of me and when I play hockey. I thought I was bad
But know I am great. The thing I do not like is that he doesn't use many
Vocabulary words like when you are looking for a better word.
This book not that valuable but it is a very good book. The setting is mostly in the hockey arena. Would you like to play hockey? It is a great sport.
Even though the hockey team won the championship doesn't
mean that they will win next year. What do you think? Will they win next year or not. This book is a great book. If you like sports then read Matt Christopher's wonderful series of books.
This book will change your mind about sports.

4-0 out of 5 stars Penalty Shot
Would you like to play hockey and then get bumped off the team? This happens in Matt Christopher's story Penalty Shot.A person named Jeff was a hockey player, he got bumped off the team last year.He is trying out for the team again this year.Wait till you see what happens!I thought this was a great book, because I love hockey!I think anyone would like this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great messages for kids
Just read this book with my 6 year old hockey player...he loved it for the hockey action, and I loved it for the messages it sent about teamwork and friendship and overcoming fears. This is a terrific book for a youngathlete.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Hockey Fans!
Penalty Shot was written by Matt Christopher and had a sports-friendship theme. It is a very good book. It is about a boy named Jeff, who the year before had been kicked-off the hockey team because his English grade hadslipped. This year he is determined not to let that happen again. He evengets a tutor. Now someone has been changing his composition papers withflunking composition papers. Whoever switched the composition papers, evengot into the garbage and dug out a note that Jeff had written to his friendand turned it into a friendship breaking note. Now Jeff has to find out whowants him off the team and who is messing with his friendship. It's a greatbook. ... Read more

I enjoy all of Matt Christopher's books especially his "Sport Bio" ones. I checked out this grand book at the public libary. "At The Plate With Mark McGwire" is a great book because it's all the way Matt Christopher writes, the way he wrote this book was especially GREAT. The way Matt Christopher wrote when McGwire was little to when he was a slugger, when he "stunk", and much more.I really hope people of all ages read about such a star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What you wanna read
I thought this book was great beacause you got to see this kid who always hit home runs. The child is only 8 years old, and never strikes out. He is also the pitcher for his team. I thought pitchers were not officiant hitters, but not for this kid he was awesome. The other team could never hit the ball.

5-0 out of 5 stars A kid's dream comes true, and a book gets banned.
The Kid Who Only Hit Homers, by Matt Christopher, tells of a young boy who desperately wants to play baseball for his school. Unfortunately, he is neither a good fielder nor a skilled hitter. He quits tryouts and decides not to play. On the final day of tryouts, the mysterious George Baruth approaches him. This man teaches Sylvester how to field and hit a homerun every time. (spoiler) Everyone starts to ask him questions about this mysterious man and how Sylvester hits a homerun each time he goes to bat. (spoiler)These actions go on throughout the book (spoiler)
Sylvester changes in several ways throughout the book. His skills as a baseball player increase dramatically. This leads to the improvement of his self-confidence, which allows him to feel more comfortable with himself.
This book was banned because of Snooky Malone's belief in everyone's being born under a star, which some readers interpret as ant-Christian. I think that this book shouldn't have banned. (spoiler)

5-0 out of 5 stars A childhood classic
This was my favorite book for a time when I was about seven or eight. I read all the Matt Christopher books and this one was the only one I read more than once. Where as all his other books are pretty realistic tales where a kid learns an important life lesson from sports, this one is different in that it is is more of a fairy tale - kind of like magical realism for kids.

It's exciting enough to read about a kid who only hits homers but the book becomes even more interesting as a meditation on the meaning of success. The fact that I still remember this book at all is a true testament to how enjoyable it was. Buy it for your kid - among childrens literature, this book is a true classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in the reference to the occult
Along with my children we enjoyed this book until the author made reference to the occult. Not sure what the purpose was. I am unable to trust the content of any of Mr Christophers books in the future. Very Disappointed

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK WAS AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I suggest this book especially if u LOVE baseball...& even if u don't heck you'll still love it.I think it's right up there with the best-selling book...the BIBLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Double Play at Short Review
I really enjoyed reading this great book!!

This book is about a boy named Danny. Danny plays baseball for the Bullets and they are in the Championship Series against the Jaguars. Danny is the short-stop for the Bullets. When they get to the first game Danny noticed the Jaguars short-stop. Danny notices that Tammy the Jaguars short-stop plays exactly like him. Then on his birthday they had a game and after the game the Jaguars started to sing Happy Birthday to Tammy. After this Danny started to wonder about this Tammy girl. So Danny went to the library to do a search on her and to see if he could find anything on her. Then during the games Danny can't focus on the game but only Tammy. Before this whole series started he thought he was a shoe-in for the All-Star game, but yet after the first game he thought that Tammy would beat him. Danny tells his mom about his concerns and being related to Tammy. READ THIS BOOK TO FIND OUT IF DANNY AND TAMMY ARE REALTED SOMEHOW!!! If you really want to know I think you should read this book.

I would recommend this book to people who like mysteries, sports, baseball, and enjoy reading. Also this is a very exciting book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The 2 Baseball Players
The book was about an adopted boy named Danny Walker that had played short stop and wanted to make the all-star team. But, there is a new girl named Tammy who bats and fields just like him. In the end Danny realizes something familiar about Tammy. I thought the book was interesting and exciting because once you read some you want to read some more!

4-0 out of 5 stars It was a GREAT book
I liked the story about a boy who plays baseball and encounters a girl. He has many similarities and he wants to find out more about her. His mom tells him that she is his twin and his mom died at birth. The boy's team faces his sister in the championship. His sister knows that they are twins and they both play ther best and he and his sister have a geat time after the game.

I liked the story because of a boy who plays baseball and encounters a girl. Ho has many similarities and he wants to find out more about her. His sister knows that they are twins and they both play ther best and he and his sister have a geat time after the game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Play at Short
This story was about a boy who only lived to play Baseball. The boy's name was Danny Walker. He only wanted to make the Allstar Team. Danny was one of the best in the league. There was a girl that was just a good as him now and he was not the best anymore. Danny is kind of like me. I love Baseball. I live for sports and I always want to make the Allstar Team.

I liked the book. It was kind of like me and playing Baseball. I think my least favorite part is when the girl beats him. I didn't like that the girl was like him, good at everything. They were on the same team to see how it would work. It would not work because they both play the same position.

I would recommend this book to a person that understands the the sport. If you like sports you will like Double Play at Short by Matt Christopher ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book on the Father of Bodybuilding
At a time when the chemically-enhanced monsters of today are putting professional bodybuilding back in the freakshow arena and ensuring it remains the minority sport it has always been, it is interesting to read about its 19th century music hall/variety show beginnings in the strong man act. Sandow was the most famous and celebrated strongman of them all and his story in this book is a fascinating and entertaining read. The depth of research and wealth of interesting characters and anecdotes make this book a must have for anyone interested in physical culture and the history of bodybuilding. The petty politics, scams, and dubious business deals among the strong men and health club owners of the late 19th/early 20th century have never left the sport. Sandow, while seemingly being a genuine advocate of bodybuilding for health reasons, comes across as the master of self-promotion.

His position as the father of the sport is assured, not least by the fact that the Weider Organisation/IFBB call their Mr Olympia trophy (the highest honour in todays bodybuilding world) a Sandow. The irony is not lost on this reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sandow The Magnificent is well written and enjoyable reading
Sandow The Magnificent is an excellent biography of an enigmatic showman who came to the forefront of physical culture at the turn of the century. Growing up during the fifties in a household of amateur bodybuilders I was subjected to back issues of Strength and Health magazine and often saw old photos of Sandow. Familiar with the image, but not the person, my interest was piqued when I came upon David Chapman's book. Chapman's approach in telling the story of Sandow sheds light on almost every facet of the strongman's life-the good, bad and kinky. Though some of Sandow's life is apparently somewhat shrouded in mystery, and much is left to conjecture and interpretation, the book is both illuminating and interesting. Sandow The Magnificent is well written, enjoyable reading and gets quickly into the depths of Sandow. Unlike many biographies that extensively probe the lineage and childhood of the subject, something I personally find tedious, Chapman gets right to the man behind the fascinating black & white images. Now when I see a photo of Sandow there is more understanding of what was behind the rugged facade of muscle and strength.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sandow, a magnificent biography of an unusual Victorian

David Chapman's biogaphy of the "Great Sandow" is more than just the story of the first muscle and physique star of modern times. As a boy, Sandow visited Italy and became impressed with the marble statues of the muscular heros of Ancient Rome. His logic dictated that he would become a living work of art and later, as a mature muscle man, displayed his physique as the sculptures were viewed in art museums.

Chapman is the first author I have read who strips away the prejudice of those who would say he was a simple sideshow performer who displayed himself as an egotist. Chapman clearly dispells myth, both good and negative to draw us near to the man and his thoughts, his fears and ultimately, his triumph in defining who and what he was...the father of modern bodybuilding. ... Book Description

It was Sarah who spotted the first body…

The Screech Owls’ journey to Vancouver had begun as an innocent hockey road trip. They had come to play in the new “3-on-3” shinny tournament. But when the team headed out to sea to watch the first whales of the season return to the West Coast, the dream trip turned into a horrifying adventure.

It was Travis who spotted the second one…

Two bodies – one a dolphin, one a man – bobbing in the tide.

And when Nish stared down at the floating, twisting body of the man and announced “We know him!” the Screech Owls also knew they were in the middle of a baffling mystery.

Slowly, the truth begins to emerge: an international smuggling operation, a heroic dolphin, and a wildly brilliant plan. The Screech Owls are almost enjoying themselves, until they discover their own lives are in danger!

The West Coast Murders is the twelfth book in the Screech Owls Series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
The Team That Couldn't Lose by Matt Christopher is a very interesting book. The characters are Coach Kash, Chip Chase, and the rest of the Cayugans football team. Mr. McFall, an old player who played 60 years ago, has lost his old playbook because his wife sold it. A boy named Danny Livenmore bought it, and was sending plays to the Cayugans.
This book is a must read! It has a good author because he is a very young sports writer. He will probably have some good books in the future.
Matt Christopher is a former sports magazine seller. Also he worked at General Electric. And is a young sports writer for kids. Keep an eye out for more books by Matt Christopher.

5-0 out of 5 stars The winners!
A Review by Erik
This book was an interesting story about a kid's football team that was supposed to lose every game, but they mysteriously get a new play that they used to help them.

Jasper was an old man who recognized the plays. He said they used them over 60 years ago when he was in high school. Chip, the quarterback, asked the high school coach if he was giving them the plays, but he said no.

Every week they got a new play and practiced it. And every week they won the game. Jasper, chip the coach, and the other kids on the team wanted to know who was sending the plays to the coach. They tried and tried to see where the plays were coming from, but the only person who knew wouldn't talk about it.

The characters are like real kids and very interesting. The coach doesn't know a lot about football but that part of what makes the story interesting.

The book is interesting and doesn't get boring. The main story talks about the football games and kids. But also talks about the mystery of who is sending the coach the secret plays and where did these plays come from.

The worst part about the book is that the Author led part of it get boring because parts of the book drug on too long, especially in the middle. But most of the time it was fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet

3-0 out of 5 stars Fiery Fullback Review
The book Fiery Fullback was about a kid, Chip Hilton, who turns a kid named Greg Hansen into a good football player. Chip Hilton is State's quarterback and State needs to win many games to make it to the Rose Bowl. They have a problem, though. State's best middle linebacker, Greg Hansen does not cooperate with the coaches and has no respect for other players. He has a poor attitude towards middle linebacker, because he wants to play another position. Greg Hansen wants to play running back for State. The spot was already taken by Fireball Finley, who was much quicker and much better of a running back than Greg. Greg wanted to play running back because his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had played this position. His father had an injury in high school and it ruined the chances of him being a professional football player. Greg wanted to make his father proud. He tried to work it out with the coach, but Coach Ralston would rather have Fireball at that position. After hearing this news, Greg Hansen quit State football team. Chip Hilton tries to bring him back to the team, but he does not listen to Chip. He wanted to be a running back hero. After a while, Chip goes to Greg's house and convinces him to come back. Greg Hansen then realizes that middle linebacker can be a good position, too, after getting a couple of good hits. He decides to change his attitude and State beats their last match-up of the regular season. The book also has many other exciting parts to it; not only with Greg Hansen. The games were very enjoyable for me to read. This book was great because I like football, and I like to read about heroes. Chip Hilton was the hero in this book. He lead the State football team to win all of their regular season games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original Manuscript is Great
Evidently the other person who wrote a review of this book read the paperback version. If you want the "classic" and unrevised Chip Hilton, you have to read the hardcover version. (Yes, they are two different things.) The hardcover version is the exact manuscript discovered in Clair Bee's personal effects after he died. Indeed, it is not quite as polished as the other books, in that there are a few minor continuity issues between this and some earlier titles, but this is a look at Clair Bee's last Chip Hilton story, before the final edits it never received. For any fan of the original, unrevised Chip Hilton series, this book is a must have. If you don't like all the revisions that have been made in the paperback versions of the stories, don't read them -- stick with the originals and the HC version of Fiery Fullback.

2-0 out of 5 stars New Chip Hilton book a disappointment
I've been a fan of the Chip Hilton books for year, and was happy to hear that a new one was coming out. The book was a disappointment, however, and does not measure up to the first 23.

There were a few problems with the book. First, they tried to bring Chip up to date, but didn't get all of the details right. They put in references to computers and big screen TVs, but the football games and in the book used the old rules and strategies from when the series was first written. (Besides, are we supposed to believe that Chip and his friends have been in college for 40 years?)

The second problem I had with this book is that it concentrated too much on the games and the off-the-field problems of one player. There was barely any mention of school, work, life in the dorm or any of the other parts of Chip's life that made the other books so interesting.

Finally, Chip was always an All-American kid, but in this book he sounds like a born-again Christian. It just kind of felt like the authors were cramming their religious beliefs down our throats.

The book was ok, but after reading the first 23 in the series it was disappointing. ... Read more

Book Description

The Scrappers have made it halfway through the season and are starting to look pretty good. If only Ollie's habit of talking himself through his pitches -- out loud -- wasn't getting so much attention from the other teams. Ollie knows that the other kids think he's weird, but if he doesn't talk he can't concentrate, and then he can't control the ball.

With so much pressure to "act normal," Ollie is starting to think that he can't make it through the season. Whenever he messes up a play, he just knows that the Scrappers think he's the weak link -- especially that bigmouth, Gloria Gibbs. He is all set to quit...but a small part of him wonders if the coach is right -- that he has what it takes to pitch, if he can just believe in himself. If he can do that, the Scrappers may still have a fighting chance to win the championship.

Now We're Talking is the fourth book in Dean Hughes's new Scrappers series. Each book focuses on a different member of this unseasoned but determined baseball squad. In one summerlong season, each player learns something about him or herself and what it is that defines a team. ... Read more

Book Description

The best-known mountaineer in Britain for almost 40 years, Sir Chris Bonington is still the public face of climbing. Through his books, lectures, and TV films, he's become a great ambassador for promoting every ascent in the mountain world. At 65 years old, this self-described "climbaholic's" passion and enthusiasm remain undiminished.

Despite his high profile, Bonington essentially remains a shy, complex man with many human failings. The man high up on the Eiger, Annapurna, and Everest is a leader frequently assailed by self-doubt and often devastated by the deaths of close friends. High Achiever examines Bonington's deepest motives and reveals the joys and occasional despair of living a life at the limits of physical and mental experiences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of action and adventure
One of the best books I have read in the past year has to be Fence Busters by Chip Hilton. It is a marvelous book about how Chip and his friends make it into the collage baseball team. One of the major reasons I enjoyed this book so much is that it is about baseball. It is a sport where different people play. Another reason I found the book to be so wonderful is that it was baseball because that is my favorite sport. The reason I picked out this book is because I used to play baseball for 8 years. Of course, my favorite reason for loving this book is it is a sports book. As you can see, Fence Busters By Chip Hilton was truly my favorite book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story
This is good sports story with an interesting off the court plot. This whole series is full of good lessons for kids that older sports fans might find corny. I had some of the original Hilton books as a boy and simply loved them. I read them so many times that I, however, feel betrayed by some of the revisions that the authors chose to make when they re-released the books. The changes sometimes create confusion and may cause inconsistencies in later books in the series. For example, one player who is 6-5 in the original version, is 6-10 in this revised version. No big deal in this story, but a later book in the series deals with the team's lack of a big man. If you are a Hilton fanatic, I think you will see what I mean. Still, this is one of the better stories in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Chip Hilton Book!
What a great book! The Chip Hilton Sports Series is filled with good sports action and characters I can relate to. Soapy is really terrific in this book, and Chip Hilton is always somebody to look up to. I recommend this book and all the books in the Chip Hilton Series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the Hardy Boys, but better
When I was younger I used to read the Hardy Boys books, which were great. Then my dad gave me some of his old Chip Hilton books from when he was young. They were just like the Hardys, except with sports. I didn't know they were back in print until now, but they are definately worth the $5 or so, whether for yourself or a gift for a 10-12 year old. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alot of entertainment
I recommend this book to anyone that likes sports and has a tough time reading. They will really enjoy this book. This book is a good book because the words are descriptive and it's easy to comprehend, and the details that the author has given us in the book make us feel that we're the character. "The bike bucked and bounced, and a couple of times it skidded to the side to much that I almost lost my balance and fell. But I managed to keep it upright, using my feet to balance it when I felt it leaning over too far." Another great thing about this book is how there are a couple of pictures and that makes me visualize where the character is in the book. One of the pictures shows Ron on his dirt bike and he's in the air after jumping the ramp, Ron said " You're not going to stop me, no matter what you do!" If you like sports and you have a tough time reading, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dirt bike racer
If you like to read, you will love this book! The book is fascinating because this book is about dirt bikes. Two boys find a dirt bike in a lake that was lost off of a house boat in a windstorm. The two boys get the bike out of the water and hope to win races with it. The boys meet a bully who tries to keep them from winning. I like the book because I think dirt bikes are awesome and I have always had a passion about riding them. Ages 9-adult should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars dirt rocks
This book is really good story tied in with a good sport. It all began when the boy finds a dirt bike at the bottom of a lake when he goes scuba diving. he brings it up and cleans it up. He has to buy new parts so he works for an old man who used to be a racer so eventually they bond. the old mans nephew wants his uncles money when he dies and since hes assoiating with another boy he doesn't like it. He hires someone to try to mess the boy up so his uncle will hate him and not give him the money. Will his plan work, or will he fail, and lose the money he wants?

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Find
A Review by Ryan

One day Ron and his friend Tony were out scuba diving and found a YZ80 (which is a dirt bike) at the bottom of the lake. The bike needs fixing up and that takes a lot of money. He gets a job with a rich man named Mr. Perkins and becomes very good friends with him. He fixes up the bike with his friends Mike and Tony. He believes that his dream of racing will finally come true. Little does he know that when he took the job that one person could threaten his dream?

I like how this books characters. I can visualize what the characters look like and act by the authors descriptions. Also the characters have there own personality traits that are very strongly written. Another thing I like about this book is the action scenes because they are very suspenseful and the author always keeps you thinking. When you think you know what is going to happen next in a race, he completely fools you with something else. One thing I don't like about this book is the language. I don't like it because he doesn't use the correct words for the races. He uses the word meet instead of moto.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sports and has an interest in dirt bike racing. Also to anyone who likes a lot of action and suspense. I t would be a good book for someone who isn't that good of a reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dirtbike Racer
Matt Christopher's "Dirtbike Racer" is a great adventorous book. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has a interest in dirtbikes.
This is about a kid who is scooba diving with his friend. They find a motorcycle in the bottom of a lake. The kid has to work for money because his dad would not give him the money to fix up his motorcycle. The kid gets a job with a guy across the lake and earns the money to get his dirbike fixed. Then he races and wins the championship.

Even though I don't like to read, this book was interesting. It was a great and adventurous book. ... Read more
