On July 10, 1999, at the end of ninety minutes of regulation play plus two fifteen-minute overtime periods, Briana Scurry faced the greatest challenge of her soccer career. As goalkeeper for the U.S. Women's national team, she would be squaring off against China's five best penalty kickers in a shootout to determine the winner of the 1999 Women's World Cup. The pressure was enormous--but Briana Scurry thrives on pressure, which is one reason she's been called the best goalkeeper in the world. Since 1994, she has proven again and again that when the heat's on, she'll stay cool. And that's just what she did that steamy July day..... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the hockey machine
This book The Hockey Machine by Matt Christopher is a verry interesting book to the people who really like hockey. In this book Steve a starting center was kiddnapped by his coach of the chariots. He thought his dad signed the paper but Mr agagard forged his fathers name.He played as much as 13 games until something suprises him. I recomend this book to the people who are into hockey and the people who like hockey because this book is perfect. If I like this book you will too.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Machine a review by Adam
By: Matt Christopher

Have you ever been away from your parents or someone you loved for a long period of time? Well if you have I bet you don't like it. In the book "The Hockey Machine" by Matt Christopher, the protagonist, Steve, plays ice hockey for hockey team called the Bobtails. Steve lives with his parents, or used to anyway. One day after hockey, just as Steve was leaving, he heard a voice say, "Hi Steve, I'm Mark," he announced. Steve did not know who this was.
Then Mark added, "Me and my older friend have been watching you play hockey". " Come on he is in the car waiting to meet you." Marks older friend is Kenneth. Kenneth is a coach of a ice-hockey team in Indianapolis. When Steve and Kenneth met they talked, and after that Kenneth asked Steve if he wanted to go and get something to eat for lunch. Steve told him no because he had to get home. Kenneth said that he would take him home right after they ate. Without saying anything Mark pushed Steve in. Steve got in and Steve, Mark, Kenneth, and the driver all went out to lunch.

On the ride back to Steve's house, Steve fell asleep. When Steve awoke he was still in the car. Then he asked in a worried voice, " Where are we going?"
Kenneth answered, "To Indianapolis."
Steve shrieked, "What, you said that you would take me home right after lunch." Kenneth ruled, "You're going to play on my hockey team, the Chariots.
I already asked your parents when you were asleep."
Steve said "Prove it." Kenneth pulled out a letter and gave it to Steve.
The letter was typed out. Steve thought in his head that anybody could have typed this letter. After Steve was finished reading the letter he finally questioned, " how come I didn't even get a chance to say good-bye to my parents?" No one answered.
As soon as they reached the airport they got on to an airplane to fly to Indianapolis. After they got there Steve met the hockey team. They stayed in their own hotel. After Steve met the guys he asked Mark if Mark would talk to Kenneth because Steve was already feeling home sick. Mark told him "quit thinking about your home. It just makes you more worried."
Then he advised "all of the guys and I did." Steve just bowed his head in sadness, and all he could do was think about home! If you've ever felt like Steve has, all you want to do is go home and see your parents. See what happens to Steve if you get the book The Hockey Machine

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey
The Hockey Machine is about this kid who is taken to the Indians to play hockey. So, if you want to find out what happens to Steve, read The Hockey Machine!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Machine
This book is a good book, I recommend it to others. It has adventures and is about hockey.
If you like hockey, adventure or mystery's you would like this book.
It is a fairly easy book to read and not difficult to follow the story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I'm 25 years old and I still read this masterpiece at least once a year. My friends all make fun of me, but its just so good that I can't put it down. So what if I'm single and living w/my persian cat, who I named after the character Kenneth. It has all the elements that a good book needs: suspense, drama, kidnapping of children, and hockey. Christopher is a GENIUS up there with greats like Dante, Shakespeare and Carolyn Keene. ... Read more

Book Description

In Home Run Hero, the second book in Dean Hughes's popular Scrappers series, Wilson Love is certainly "the Man." His long ball promises to make him stand out as the Scrappers' best slugger -- when he connects, that is. As Coach Carlton points out, Wilson misses as many as he hits. But when the coach helps him work on a new stance and swing, things get even worse. When he comes to bat, his arms and legs feel all wrong. He couldn't hit the ball if someone held it right up in front of him. The coach might say his swing is better, but what good is that if he still strikes out all the time?

While some of the team side with the coach, others tell him to swing the back the way he wants to, to be himself. Soon Wilson feels caught in a tug-of-war, until he finally realizes that who he is and how he plays is his decision to make.

Each book in Dean Hughes's Scrappers series focuses on a different member of this unseasoned but determined baseball squad. In one summerlong season, each player learns something about him or herself and what it is that defines a team. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Home Run Hero
This is the second book in the Scrappers series by Dean Hughes. Each book in the Scrappers series covers a different position in baseball and bases the story around that position. This book is based on Wilson, the teams catcher and power hitter. The team members are starting to get frustrated by the number of games they are losing and tempers are flaring. The team is not working together and there is a definite attitude problem. Wilson just wants everyone to work together, but then he starts to fall into a batting slump and when Coach Carlton gives him advice to improve his bat, he only gets worse. Soon, the morale of the team will improve and Wilson learns that the catcher is the leader of the team and his ability to take control and calm the team down makes him well-suited for this position. He becomes a leader on and off the field.

Again, this book has special tips in the back on playing catcher and has Scrapper trivia trading cards. There is plenty of play-by-play baseball action and some great lessons on team spirit and teamwork.

I would highly recommend this book to any kids, boys or girls, between 8 and 12 years old that like baseball. ... Read more

Book Description

Robbie Marquez is looking forward to nothing more than a summer full of his favorite sport -- baseball. He hopes especially to be the shortstop for one of his city's rec league teams, but when he and his friend Trent Lubak go to the league office for their team assignments, they find out their applications never arrived. Suddenly, they are looking at a summer with no baseball at all -- unless they can pull together enough players for a team, and a coach and a team sponser, in a very short amount of time.

Robbie and Trent indeed pull it off. (Even if Robbie does have to invent a cousin to round out the team.) So here come the Scrappers, an unusual mix of players but a team that has potential -- if they can just figure out how to get along. And that's a challenge, especially when Robbie loses out as shortstop to loudmouthed Gloria, who won't let him forget it!

This book, focusing on Robbie Marquez, is the first book in Dean Hughes's new Scrappers series about this unseasoned but determined baseball squad. Each new book in the series focuses on one of the members of the team during a summerlong season. Along the way, each person learns not only something about him or herself but also what it is that defines a team. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrappers Series
I have read everyone of Mr. Hughes'Books about the Scrappers to my son...BR>He loves to read them time and again, you get caught up in the game with these kids (Scrappers) and how they become better players and become friends and real team players.

3-0 out of 5 stars Baseball's Fun
The main character in this book is Robbie. Robbie is on a baseball team. At a game a friend doesn't know how to swing. Also,in the story Robbie's cousin went on vacation so Robbie's team is going to need a girl, and she is pretty good. I recommend this book for kids 10, 11, and even 12 years old. This book is pretty good and exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Play Ball, Volume 1
What a great book for all the kids out there, boys AND girls, that like to play baseball! We coach three Little League Baseball teams right now (ages 6-7, 8, and 10) and have recommended this series to all of our teams as a great summer reading program. The books are written for ages 8-12, but younger children with a pretty good understanding of baseball will enjoy reading the book with an adult. My 6 and 7 year old boys loved this book and are eager to read the next book (they are not big reading fans, so I was happy to support the reading habit by getting the entire series for them).

This is the first book in the Scrappers Series by Dean Hughes. As a general note on the series, each of the Scrappers books covers a different position on the team with tips at the back of the book on playing the position, some advice from the coach and trivia trading cards dedicated to the learning more about the game.

Play Ball (Vol. 1) is about two players who fail to make the deadline for the summer baseball league and have only two hours to find enough players to form a new team. When Robbie only finds eleven players, not meeting the required twelve player minimum, he creates an "imaginary cousin". This lie causes problems for Robbie before they even play their first game. Another problem for Robbie is that one of the players recruited is a girl who competes with him for his shortstop position causing rivalry between team members and subsequently a loss in an important game.

By the end of the book, the players(and the readers) have learned valuable lessons in honesty, consequences, team spirit and team work, and good sportsmanship!

Again, I think this is a great book for young baseball fans! It makes for a great summer reading program and keeps the attention of the young readers. Look for Home Run Hero (Vol. #2) by Dean Hughes also available now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real kids play baseball
My son, aged 9 -10, and I read all of the Scrapper books and are dying for Mr. Hughes to write more of them. They combine real kids with real personalities and problems, with exciting play by play baseball scenes. These are "feel good" books, perhaps not great literature, but in the end the children overcome their issues and contribute to the team. They are engaging reading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Peter's Adventure
This book is about an orphan named Peter. Peter loves motos, (dirt bikes). Along the way Peter meets a rich boy named Giff. Giff helps Peter in races and lets Peter stay at his house for a week. Peter fixes Giff's motobike and Peter races it at one of the races. This book would be good if you liked dirt bikes and racing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dirt Bike Runaway
The book, Dirt Bike Runaway was written by Matt Christopher. My favorite character was Peter because he was good at riding dirt bikes. Some other characters were Dexter Pasina, Jesse Kutter, and Peter's sister. They were the main characters. My favorite part was when, Peter and Dexter weren't friends until Dexter asked Peter to work for him. The job was to steal car parts. Peter said no and then they started to argue and that turned into them fighting. Dexter beat him up and knocked him out. Peters best friend was Giff, they were good friends. They rode motercrosses against Dexter. At the end of the story Dexter and Peter became good friends. To conclude, I think Dirt Bike Runaway was a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dirt Bikes
Peter Lewinski, a mechanic who works on dirt bikes, runs away from his foster home, the Bentleys, because he was treated poorly. He also ran away because he was always getting in trouble. After Peter reaches Cypress Corner, he stays with friends. Later, Peter finds out he is in more trouble staying with those 3 friends. I think this is a good book to read because if you've never really experienced what dirt bikes are like, this gives you an idea. I recommend this book for 4th-7th graders. ... Read more
