4-0 out of 5 stars Dany and the dino
One day Danny decides to go to the museum where he meets a live dinosaur. Danny and the dinosaur then leave the museum and go exploring around town and have many adventures before it is time for the dinosaur to return to the museum.

The reason I only gave this book four stars is that I find the wording rather strained and awkward. Even though the words are not great, the illustrations are fun. Depending on the version, the illustrations are colored differently. The original (copyright 1958) has better colors in my opinion. They are a mix of pictures in shades of brown and pictures in full color. The main difference between the color quality in the original and reissue is that the reissue has a solid color, and the original almost look as if it were colored in lightly with crayons. I think the color in the reissue is harsher, and therefore prefer the previous. The drawing themselves are wonderful, cute and expressive.

So in my opinion this is a four star book because of the occasional awkwardness with the words and because of the way the pictures are colored in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burned into my brain
This is a classic work, a brilliantly simple book, with a lovely fantasy story and exquisitely simple, highly memorable illustrations. Definitely a must for very young readers, especially dinosaur lovers.

Quite simply, Danny and the Dinosaur is forever burned into my brain as a favorite of my childhood, and now of my own children. It's Hoff's best, and I expect it will remain a classic for generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars My two year old loves it!
This is one of the books we find him "reading" on his own. This is one of the most requested books he has (out of hundreds). It's a great read-aloud book because there's enough room to point out the words while your kid is pointing at the pictures. The whole Danny series is great, in fact.

4-0 out of 5 stars My own book
I thought this book was alright but it was not the best book I have ever read. I liked the way Danny went to the museum and the dinosaur came to life and took Danny to all those places, including the baseball game that they went to. I wish that I could go and get my own dinosaur and we could do all that stuff, but since the dinosaurs are extinct I guess I could not do that. I still like the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book and tape review
There are plenty of reviews of this book, I want to give my thoughts on the book and tape package available. There is a nice introduction and conclusion offered by the narrator and one side has page turn signals, while the other does not. While this is an unabridged recording, the narrator actually adds words on page 18, which may confuse the child trying to follow along in the book. Also, sometimes the narrator's child voices come across as whiney and nasal. However, all things considered, I feel this is a worthwhile purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely adorable!
This is our most recent Boynton Board Book and we are pleased once again. The dinosaurs are adorable with surprisingly expressive eyes. The rhymes are clever too. We read to our 5 month old each night before bed and this is yet another Boynton board book that is ideal. Her books are just the right length for short attention spans and the bright illustrations captivate our little one. Thank goodness for Sandra Boynton!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinos!
I never really realized how many different types of dinosaurs there were until I read this book, even if they be 'dinosaurs crammed in an elevator.' This book mentions all sorts of dinosaurs, from big to tiny, smooth to spiky and hot to cold. The pictures used to illustrate each type of dinosaur are really wonderful. They are bright, bold, colorful, and, above all, cute. Like all the Boynton books I've read, the words in this book rhyme very well, effortlessly. The rhyming also helps to make the book flow well, and flow well it does. This is a classic Boynton book, and is a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dinosaur Favorite that We Read Again and Again
I purchased this book for my daughter when she was only one, and we both quickly learned to love it. Then, when my son came along, this book became one of his favorites as well! The wonderful rhymes and adorable pictures make this book a true blessing for the parent who has to read it over, and over, and over... :-)

I was especially impressed by the small bit of musical score that is part of the rhyme "Dinosaurs singing a dinosaur song." Whenever we get to that page, my children love to sing the little tune that is written there!

Sandra Boynton is a wonderful children's writer, and this is a great example of her work. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars These dinos are friendly
Dinosaurs with different emotions, behaviors, sizes, colors, even times. Happy/sad, good/bad, early/later, weak/strong, cold/hot - you get the picture. We also like 1 2 3! and Barnyard Dance in this grouping. Almost all of the Boynton books are a hit at our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it
Got it, love it. And we've read it to Alex so many times that he can almost read it along with us (and he's only 16 mos old!) He even points to the colors at the end and says 'bye-bye' when the dinosaurs "say goodbye, because they're through".
Another winner! ... Read more

Everything about The Big Book of Dinosaurs is off thecharts--the size of the book itself, the elaborate two-page spreads, the color models, and even the oversized type. Children can experience the amazing powers of these prehistoric beasts--the jagged teeth of the ferocious meat eaters, the slashing claws of the Deinonychus, and the long-necked Barosaurus that could reach five-story-high treetops and may have had eight hearts. Yet, like the dinosaurs themselves, there is nothing threatening or intimidating about this highly informative book. The text is brief and succinct, only conveying facts that children find interesting. (There's even an index for quick searches offavorite dinos.) The lifelike illustrations give young readers a solid sense of what dinosaur fossils and skeletal systems look like as well as clear mental pictures of how these creatures appeared in "real-life" millions of years ago. 5-0 out of 5 stars Everything your preschooler wants to know about dinosaurs
Just like dinosaurs themselves, this book is BIG -- big type, big format, big pictures. The kids will love it. What preschooler doesn't love dinosaurs? One trip to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City had my son, at age three and a half, talking a blue streak about stegosauruses, elasmosauruses, tyrannosauruses, and Heaven knows what else. "The Big Book of Dinosaurs" is organized into categories such as meat-eaters, boneheads (pachycephalosaurus and his ilk) and gargantuans such as brontosaurus. The double-page spreads with gorgeously illustrated dinosaurs are sure to hold a child's attention, and the text is succint and easy for them to understand. It's a great read-aloud book for the preschool to first grade set. There's a very good index at the end of the book with proper pronunciations of all the dinosaur names that will have your preschool paleontologist rattling them off like a pro. Highly recommended for all children between three and six.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good first book but not for the very young...
This is a beautifully illustrated book with lots of great pictures. The pages include lots of facts about dinosaurs and show pictures of both very live looking dino's as well as their skeletons. It is a good book to continue a child's interest in the subject. The end of the book includes a index with name pronunciations (very handy!). Some of the pictures are a little "too realistic" for the younger set. All in all, a great starter book for my 5 year old's interest in dinosaurs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A real joy! A great addition to your child's library.
The dinosaurs in this book are friendly and cute. The pictures work well with the writing. The almost repetitive nature of this book make it easy for children to remember and read the book themselves.

My son loves this book. Even now whenever he sees something dinosaur, he'll say "Roar"!

There are so many books for children out there, it's hard for me to say one is a must have over the other. However, this is one that children will love. I found it well worth the money we spent on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun book, good words and rhyming!
This is a great book for early reading and for fun time with the kids! My son loves it, while my daughter only likes it. It is fun to read with lots of sounds and a variety of "roars".

The graphics are colorful and nice with colorful dinosaurs that and smile a lot, and not scary - dinosaurs can easily go over the "top" and get scary for kids if not done right. The words are few, and go well together with quick rhyming and therefore good for early reading.

Most of all, it is fun! My son is now almost 4 and still pulls this book out and still has a lot of fun while we read it. Your results may vary, because I'm a good "roarer"!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book
This is a small board book that features some nifty dinosaur illustrations accompanied by some simple rhymes. This book has quickly become my 2-year old son's favorite book, and he carries it around the house and always wants us to read it to him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Large vibrant illustrations

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for pre-schoolers

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Bob
I can't say enough good about WIlliam Joyce. He's one of my two or three favorite illustraters. His drawings are so detailed that you can almost see individual leaves in his plants and bushes. Besides, his unbelievable technical ability, he also is extremely inventive. On one page in this book, the dinosaur and his friends aren't shown except in their shadows and like in all his books, the colors seem almost too bright to be real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wacky Adventure
...Dinosaur Bob is one of those children's books you just read over and over to your kids. It is funny from start to finish, with Bob the Dino and his family the Lazardos. My boys loved it as kids and will pass it down to theirs.

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 stars for this book!
The story's great, the illustrations are wonderful. Adults will enjoy this as much or more than kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story of a really big family pet
The Lazardos are not your typical family. So it follows that they require no typical pet. Enter Bob. They find him on safari in Africa and decide that he needs a good home. 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Best pop-up book I have ever seen, hands down.
This book puts all other pop-up books to shame. The colors are magnificent and the pop-ups are detailed and exciting. My 2-year-old is on his 2nd one because he loved this book when he was 15 months old and got a little too excited and ripped off some heads and tails. The story is cute and we love to make up our own stories. Buy this book - new or used, you will never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well designed (and clever) pop-up book
When I was little, pop-up books were simple, and had only one moving element per page. They were exciting, of course, but still, it seemed like more could be going on.

Fast-forward to 2002. My son got his first pop-up book, Dinosaur Stomp!, and wow, these books have undergone some changes from my childhood. The dinosaurs in this book literally leap out at you from the page. And you no longer have to do anything -- you just open each page and the pop-up action happens automatically.

When we first received this book, we were worried that it might make our son nervous. After all, he was only 17 months old at the time. What would he think of large 3-dimensional creatures baring their teeth at him from a book?

Well, we shouldn't have worried. Our son laughs as we read him the rhymes on each page, and he has already picked out a couple of dinosaurs that he enjoys seeing the most. He grabs my arm for one of the pictures (a big fat dino with really large teeth), but even then, he doesn't seem upset. Just excited.

The artwork is beautiful. Each of the dinosaurs is rendering in beautiful bright greens, yellows, purples, etc, making every page an eye-catching work of art. And the creation of each pop-up must be a talent unto itself. The creatures look like they shouldn't fit in the book, yet when you close it, they snap right back in.

Unfortunately, the book has the same problem that I remember when I was younger -- once you damage a pop-up, it's hard to get it to work correctly again. There is one page in our book that only has dinosaur bodies on it. All the heads have been ripped out. We've fixed this page numerous times, but each time, our son finds a way to rip it up again. I don't know of a really good way to avoid this, so if you have a child who likes to tear things up, take this into consideration.

So, do I recommend this book? Definitely! It's visually appealing, has great pop-up action, clever rhymes, and our son seems to love it! What more can you ask for?

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves this book, and I enjoy it too
Daughter got it for her 2nd birthday as a gift, and she could hardly put it down. The pop-up images are very cute, and she loves listing the colors and talking about what each dinosaur is doing. The verse is short but fun to read. This is definitely one or our most favorite books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Dinosaur Stomp
The pop-ups in this book are awesome! Quite detailed and intricately designed. My son (18 months) just loves this book. The story to go with it however, could use a little work. It's very brief!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy reading
This book is ideal for the parents who have children that have shorter attention spans. It is fun, colorful and short. The easy to remember text is great for preschoolers who enjoy retellling the story to younger siblings, parents or other relatives. ... Read more

Eric Rohmann's Caldecott Honor-winning debut is now available as a

Dragonfly paperback. It is at once a wordless time-travel adventure and

a meditation on the scientific theory that dinosaurs were the evolutionary

ancestors of birds. The New York Times Book Review called Time

Flies "a work of informed imagination and masterly storytelling

unobtrusively underpinned by good science...an entirely absorbing narrative

made all the more rich by its wordlessness." Kirkus Reviews hailed it as

5-0 out of 5 stars A LANDMARK DEBUT IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
Eric Rohmann has made numrous contributions to the annals of children's literature since his estimable debut "Time Flies." I think often of and return to "The Cinder-Eyed Cat" for pure enjoyment.

However, "Time Flies" was the beginning - when our eyes were first arrested by the boldness of his vision as he took readers on an imaginary journey to prehistoric times.

As exciting today as it was when first published "Time flies" would be a most welcome gift for any child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imaginations will flow!
I often use this beautifully illustrated book in my classroom of 3-5 year olds. As the children view the pictures they begin talking about what they see happening without any facillitation from me. This is an excellent book to use in the classroom to promote language! Everytime we read it our plot changes a little bit! This book should be in every classroom library!

4-0 out of 5 stars Images of dinosaurs-Time Flies
In this magical wordless picture book, Rohmann does a great job of setting the scene in a history museum. When a bird flies through the area with the dinosaur skeletons, The area suddenly comes to life. The walls become trees and beautiful landscapes. The bird is swallowed by one of the now living dinosaurs and as he escapes Rohmann takes us back to reality of the dinosaur skeletons and fossils. The pictures are amazing! I can see why he won the Caldecott award. ... Read more

All you need is this book, three young chickens, a few household items, and some time to make your own scale model of an apatosaurus skeleton. And it neatly dovetails with current scientific theories that birds are the living descendents of dinosaurs. McGowan's detailed, practical directions even include recipes for the leftovers. A wonderful project, and a clear and well-written book. Do not expect to finish quickly -- we spent many hours over many months cleaning, sorting, cutting, and assembling a beautiful 'apatosaurus.' Kids of all ages (mine are 3 and 5) can get involved, from enthusiastically finishing their chicken dinners to cleaning and sorting and assembling the new family pet.

I should note that if you have a Dremel or similar moto-tool, you'll find a lot of the cutting and sanding easier (and you'll have less bone-boiling).

"Doo-bop-a-loo-bop!" In this rollicking romp through a prehistoric weekend, dinosaurs frolic and caper the night away. After some initial early evening shuffling shyness, these party animals are ready to get down, doing the Triassic Twist and the Brontosaurus Bump, the Raptor Rap and Jurassic Jump. With all this rhythm and rhyme, it's no wonder romance is soon afoot: "Tarchia winked at a stegosaur she liked. They danced together, spike to spike."This outrageous book provides a much more appealing theory behind the disappearance of dinosaurs, and hints at the possibility of another Dinosaur Stomp someday in the future. Scott Nash's wonderfully friendly bopping beasts radiate a contagious exuberance with their smiling, simple faces and bright colors and patterns. Carol Diggory Shields couldn't have found a better match for her rocking, rolling, twirling, tromping, "scientifically accurate (more or less)" dinosaurs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding family favorite!
This is the favorite book in my 4 year-old's library. It's a perfect combination for a child who is into dinosaurs and monsters, loves poetry, has a great sense of humor, and likes telling us which words rhyme. His step-dad, a 40-something jazz/blues/rock fan, enjoys the rhythm and the chance to "get down" with the silly rhymes. I like the hilarious illustrations, and especially appreciate the fact that doing the dinosaur stomp, shouting "boom-a-laka..." down the hallway, is an easy way to get my reluctant child into the bathroom to brush his teeth before bed

5-0 out of 5 stars Entirely Enchanting!!
Take off on a magical dream with a girl and her dinosaur. My daughter adores this book ... can't get enough of it. The story is magical and the illustrations are some of the best I've seen in a children's book. It is just captivating! This would make such a great birthday present, along with a little green stuffed dinosaur, just like the one the girl is holding in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite
When I first read this story to my almost-3-yr old daughter at the library, I saw a look in her eyes I had never seen before. She was already fond of dinosaurs, but this book clearly helped her discover a new way to use her imagination and she loved it. I love it for the way the dinosaur is presented--magically and whimsically, rather than ferociously. It's a beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Dinosaur
This is absolutly one of my favorite books to read to my boys! It's a great fantasy story with a very friendly dinosaur. It's very, very different than any other dinosaur books we read. I think girls would really love it also! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully presented photos and drawings
The DK series of eyewitness books are all fabulous, but this has to be my favorite. Dinosaurs are always appealing to children and adults and this book is no disappointment. Superb studio-quality, well lit photographs give you close-up shots of teeth and bones so real, you'll feel like they're right there for you to touch and pick up.

Theories on how dinosaurs really looked on the outside and how they walked are explored. Every caption has a tidbit of information that is interesting to anyone who reads it. A book like this will keep a child of any reading age occupied for no less than an hour on a road trip... and it will constantly be read over and over again... it's just intriguing and beautifully presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DINOsaur book...
I appreciate this book because it gives you drawings and paintings of how prehistoric creatures lived millions of years ago. It gives a perfect understanding of the study and also art of Paleontology. This book is, in my opinion, 1 of 2 of my most favorite books ever published for the scientific review of more than just a few species...This concludes my review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Adventure Millions of Years in the Making!
As if Ms. Frizzle's field trips weren't time-consuming enough, now she's decided to take her class back to when dinosaurs roamed the Earth! Has the Friz gone mad? Who knows what kind of animals stalked the very land we stand on millions of years ago? This joyful journey to the Jurassic could end up a perilous predicament in the past!

Written in 1994, "The Magic School Bus: In the Time of the Dinosaurs" is yet another wonderful collaboration between Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. It's Visitor's Day in Ms. Frizzle's class. Parents, relatives and friends are coming to see the students' work in all things dinosaurs. But not before the Friz makes a special announcement.

"Our class has been invited to a dinosaur dig," she informs her students. "We'll be leaving right away."

And, just like all the other field trips Ms. Frizzle has taken, this one ends up being bigger than originally planned. So big, in fact, it can only be described in prehistoric terms!

The students learn all about fossils (anything left from ancient animals or plants), as well as the scientists who study them (paleontologists). They also get to see how these scientists go about their work, using chisels and shovels and burlap and plaster. Then the real adventure begins when the Friz suggests to the class that they all go looking for some Maiasaura nests. And the only way to do that, of course, is to blast into the past!

Students will recognize some of the more well-known dinosaurs featured in this tale - Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex. But they will also be introduced to lesser-known plants and animals from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods - Cycads, Ferns, Elasmosaurus, and Lambeosaurus. Each different geological period represents a variety of creatures, habitats and temperatures.

Were dinosaurs part of a herd (meaning, did they live in packs?), or were they solitary creatures? Were some dinosaurs caring parents, or did they leave their young to fend for themselves? What brought about the end of a species that existed for so many millions of years? But most importantly, will Ms. Frizzle's class ever return to the present day?

As with every book in the "Magic School Bus" series, Cole and Degen wrap up their latest narrative with two things: 1) "From the Author's Desk and the Artist's Drawing Board" helps distinguish fact from fiction in the story; and 2) another clue as to the next riveting field trip the Friz has planned for her class. To weather that storm, the students had better be packing umbrellas and windbreakers! Things could get a little foggy!

Six excellently executed books into this series, and Cole and Degen haven't missed a beat. The writing is superb, the story engaging, and the artwork as clever and informative as ever. Parents and children alike will delight in a story that offers all the thrills of an amusement park ride, yet all the comforts of a favorite reading chair. So hop aboard the magic school bus!

As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, "Goodness gracious, we've reached the Late Cretaceous!"

1-0 out of 5 stars Not accurate information, be careful using this one
The info in this book doesn't follow the Bible facts about the creation of Earth, man and animals. Be careful using this book. Make sure it follows an explaination to your youngster about Bible truths. This is a FICTION book and not based on facts.

3-0 out of 5 stars While I usually like Magic School Bus books; not this one!
There are so many "info-narrative" books about dinosaurs for children I was disappointed in this one. I am sorry to be the dissenting opinion but I am not impressed with this book. I would use a different book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Frizz and Co. in the Land that Time Forgot, via Heinlein
It is not surprising that this is one of the best-selling children`s science series`. My five-year-old loves the pictures and story, while the seven-year-old also appreciates the plethora of facts, as well. The engaging and humorous text is packed with information and complemented by lively and amusing illustrations. The boys love the cartoon bubbles and the short "reports" by the kids in the story. The indomitable teacher, Ms Frizzle and her morphing wardrobe challenges her students on these amazing fieldtrips.

IN THE TIME OF THE DINOSAURS is about: dinosaurs and fossils. Obviously too broad a subject to cover thoroughly in this slim volume, but there`s plenty to whet the appetite. There is a real paleontologist at a real dig. And the bus turns into a time machine. The colorful charts and final class display keep us in perspective. The kids always have questions about something. Thank you Ms Frizzle, Ms Cole, and Mr Degen for answering and encouraging them.

5-0 out of 5 stars great presentation of just the right amount of information

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite at our house
My 20 month old daughter loves this book and will "read" it to herself. My older daycare children also like the book for the pictures. It's a favorite at our house!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the youngest kids
Our daughter loved the dinosaurs! This is a wonderful book for the youngest kids. The colors are vibrant, the story is fun! Enjoy!

Canadian poet Dennis Lee's poetry is well loved by children around theworld. This collection of 41 poems was selected by anthologist Jack Prelutskyfrom Lee's four previous books of poetry, including The Ice Cream Store. Childrenin the early grades will chuckle at poems about dinosaurs and alligators, monsters and mud puddles, bears and bees, and belly buttons. Debbie Tilley'sexuberant watercolor illustrations perfectly complement Lee's verse; both havethe same bouncy good humor that kids love. Invite a dinosaur to dinner at yourhouse (and don't forget some alligator pie for dessert). (Ages 4 to 7) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better
Dennis Lee is a treasure. My daughter and I devoured Alligator Pie when she was a little girl, chuckling merrily over author Lee's zany humor and vivid imagery. I have subsequently given each new Lee book to the children (and even some of the adults) I know, happy to introduce this outstanding author to those who haven't yet discovered him. Want to make your children/grandchildren/neighborhood kids laugh out loud? Get them anything Dennis Lee has written. He's truly gifted, truly tapped into the mind of the child in all of us.
My highest recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars tremendously funny
I read this book to my nephew and we giggled our way through the whole thing. The poems are quite imaginative. Some are long, others short. All very funny. My nephew is only 4, and he enjoyed picking out the things "that really wouldn't happen." He and I both loved it ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kindergarten class will "dig" this book on dinosaurs!
Right from the cover my students will be entranced with this book. It has a combination of realistic drawings and cartoons. "Amazing facts" are placed on the borders to add to the fun. Now and then there appear true/false cartoons for the parent and child to decide upon and then check their answers. This book also shows children comparative sizes---we humans would have reached only to ankles of an Ultrasauros. The colorful drawings and data are super. I also thought the last two pages used as glossary was a good idea. This book will be great to use in my year's beginning theme of Dinosaurs. ... Read more
