5-0 out of 5 stars Classic stories of a rural boy's life
John Steinbeck's "The Red Pony" is a group of four interconnected stories: "The Gift," "The Great Mountains," "The Promise," and "The Leader of the People." Each story focuses on Jody Tiflin, a 10-year old boy growing up on a ranch on the west coast of the United States. The other main characters are Jody's parents and the ranch hand Billy Buck. Also frequently appearing are the ranch dogs, Doubletree Mutt and Smasher.

"The Red Pony" is not a novel, so readers expecting the cohesion and unity of a novel will be disappointed. The book should, in my opinion, be evaluated for what it is. And once you appreciate its own peculiar structure, you may, as I did, acknowledge "The Red Pony" as a powerful and beautiful work of art.

Steinbeck masterfully captures the cycles of life, death, and renewal in the lives of both his human and animal characters. He creates vivid, often visceral scenes, that are written in a quietly powerful language. There are moving moments of joy, horror, and heartbreak. "The Red Pony" is a significant achievement by one of America's enduring literary giants.

1-0 out of 5 stars A SOURCE OF SERIOUS CHILDHOOD TRAUMA
Seriously, I don't know how this can be considerd an appropriate book for a kid. It was assigned reading when I was 12, and I was utterly traumatized to this day (20 years later) by "The Gift." I remember graphic descriptions of pus and the sadistic delight Steinbeck took in detailed accounts of the home surgeries on the horse, a bloody tracheotomy and especially the image of the buzzard eating the pony's eye, his beak dripping with thick, dark blood. What kind of crazy person gives this to a kid? I cried for hours upon hours and I have never, never forgiven Steinbeck, nor have I been able to make myself read Steinbeck again. Too bad. I hear he's a decent wrier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apology
I have never read the book and never wrote the above review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steinbeck is a master American novelist
I believe you just don't like to read if you don't enjoy Steinbeck's novels. He is the best author I have ever read and this book does nothing to dimish that accolade. Life in those times, on a farm, kid growing up, learning life/death, how to take care of animals is all addressed in this novel as themes. I think this book should be read by all junior high school students. Students in the city will probably have a hard time relating but that is the best thing in a novel where it will take you places and times that you don't normally get an experience in.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like horse books you will love this one
I liked this book because it was exciting and to read. It has a great ending. Something new always happens that you would not expect. It has a good plot. It is suspenseful. You will want to know what happens next in the story.
Black Stallion is about a boy named Alec who finds and owns a black stallion. They get ship wrecked with no other living thing on the island. He has to find food for both himself and the stallion. The stallion is a big strong horse with a lot of speed and ability to run in a race. Their shelter caught on fire and burnt down. A ship saw the smoke and rescued them.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes horse books. It's fun to read. I would recommend it to fifth through seventh graders. It's an easy book to read. It's a great book with excitement and it is fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Would Never Believe How Many times I've Read it!!!!!!!!!
This is a story about a boy named Alec who first sees a savage, yet beautiful horse led onto his ship. Alec secretly befriends him. Then there is a terrible storm and the ship is sinking.Alec lets the Black go and he plunges into the sea with Alec. A day later They have reached land but for the better or worse?

Alec and The Black are finally rescued and Alec joins forces with an ex trainer named Henry Dailey. They plan to make Black a famous race horse but will the Black Stallion ever be truly tamed?

This was a beautifully well written story full of adventure and heart. If you don't try it then you will really be missing out.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Although the copy sitting on my shelf is the dog-eared Scholastic version of my youth, not this new edition, I feel that every child who has ever looked at a horse with wonder, seen it as a thing of beauty and nobility, or dreamed of having a horse of his or her own, should read this excellent series, beginning with this very book.

A fascinating and fantastical story of sea rescue, perseverance, and courage, as well as a peek into the world of horse racing half a century ago, these stories, despite being written in 1941, have a timeless quality that will always capture the heart of any adventurer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of a Horse
This book is spetacular!!! Its one of the greatest books I have read in years. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put the book down. It was about a young boy, named Alec, who finds himself and a black horse to be the only survivors of a shipwreck. Alec soon learns that he owe his life to this black horse whom saved his life, by dragging him to an island. They soon learn they must depend on each other in order to survive on the island, and because of Alec's love for horses, he learns how to become the horse's friend and he starts a type of speacial bond between the horse and himself.

One of my reasons why I liked this book is, because it always gives me that feeling of whats going to happen next. Its just that the book is so full of excitment. Every time Alec rides the black horse, the author makes it seem that Alec is always risking his life. Every once in a while the author, Walter Farley, would write an event where it seems Alec could loss his life. Such as this, "A few minutes later Henry and Jake ran up to them, and Alec weakly climbed down from the saddle. Henry took the reins- they were sticky and wet with blood."

Another reason why I liked this book is, it has just the right level of vocabulary. Sometimes when you choose a book and it turns out to be something a little too easy or a little too hard, that you can't understand what the book is really talking about. Such as this sentence, "The next day Alec set out to obtain more of the carragheen" or this sentence, "he remebered the deep gully that was there.

My most favorite part of this book was, when Alec and the black horse gets rescued from the island they were stranded on, and when Alec finally gets to see his family for the first time in many months. The reason why I like this part is, it's full of happiness. Alec had never seen his family in about five months, and he thought that he was going to die on that island with the horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whoa, SeaBiscuit!
I first read THE BLACK STALLION when I was 9 - and I became hooked and read several of the books that followed in the series. None held up to this first book - but they were consistent and I still have them.

With the book first being published in 1941 - I wonder now how much of this story was influenced by the SeaBiscuit story?

Anyway - this is one of those books that I remember wishing with all my heart and soul I could be Alec, alone on the island in the sun with that horse. Just riding. And having no other thoughts in the world.

And sometimes, after a particularly bad week, this book is one of those that I scoop up to smooth my edges. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Black Stallion Returns by Walter Farley
Alec Ramsay's horse, the Black, who beat America's fastest horses, has just been claimed by his, supposedly, real owner, who lives in Arabia. This book is about how Alec will do anything to get back the Black, even if it means to go half-way around the world! Alec eventually finds himself in search of the Black's owner in the deserts of Arabia, and anything can happen in Arabia from desert raids to horse races.
This is an animal fiction book by Walter Farley. Two reasons I liked this book was because it had a page-turning story line and a wonderful ending. There were some parts of the book that lost my interest, but overall it was a fantastic book! I would give this book a rating of four out of five. The age group that the book would be best for is 10-15 years old. I really recommend you to read this book!

The Black Stallion Returns

By Walter Farley

Adventure

Characters:

Alec is Black's owner. He loves horses. He is 14 years old. He has black hair and goes to high school. He loves Black a lot.

Black is a black stallion who Alec befriends after a shipwreck.

Henry is the short, stout, bowlegged trainer of Black. He also owns the stables Black lives in.

Mr. Volence is the owner of Sun Raider, a horse Black beat in racing. He thinks Black can improve the American racehorse.

Abu Ja' ben Ishak is Black's real owner. His hair is steel gray. His skin is tough, dry, and the color of mahogany.

Raj is about 12 years old. He guides Alec's group through the desert. He has never known his family.

Tabari is Abu's daughter. She is about 15 years old. She is very beautiful. She loves her father a lot.

The Setting:

The book takes place in Henry's stables and Alec's house in the suburbs of New York, and in Arabia.

The Plot:

Someone tries to kill Black. The next day, a man shows up and claims to be Black's real owner. They find out he is telling the truth and he takes Black to Arabia. Henry, Alec and Mr. Volence follow him to Arabia where they learn about a conflict between Abu's tribe and a neighboring tribe. The conflict is that supposedly Abu killed his best friend, who happened to be the leader of the neighboring tribe. The son of the dead leader is very vengeful. Someone re-steals Black. Abu's and the neighboring tribe are about to go to war because Abu's tribe thinks the other tribe stole Black. Alec and Raj find out the truth and save Black. The man who kidnapped Black gets away, but his men did not. Alec and Raj help make the Tribes friends again and Raj finds his family. They hold a big race like every year. During the race the man who kidnapped Black tries to shot Black. Instead, the others tribe leader shot the man. At the end of the race the other tribe's leader who was riding for his tribe and Alec, who was riding for Abu's tribe, were racing their horses neck and neck. Black and Alec win by a small space. At the end, Tabari marries the chief of the other tribe. The tribes make peace and Abu promises Alec he will get Black's first son.

My favorite scene is when Alec meets Tabari because she is very nice and talks to Alec. I also like it when Alec meets Abu's tribe because it is all new for Alec and he behaves very nicely even though he is impatient to see Black. My two favorite characters are Raj and Tabari. I like Raj because he shows independence and he is very nice and wishes he knew his family. He wants to help Alec and be friends with him. I like Tabari because she is nice, beautiful, shows lots of independence and makes her own decisions. I recommend this book to horse or animal lovers. I also recommend it for mystery lovers. I think people should read this because it is full of adventure, mystery, horses, and Alec's thoughts. It is a wonderful book. It makes you feel like you are in the book. I think all my friends should read this. It truly is an excellent book. I would rate this book a 10 because it shows a boy's love for a horse and how he struggles to get his horse back when it is taken from him. I think Walter Farley did a wonderful job writing it. I would also give this book a ten because it keeps you wondering what happens next. Walter Farley keeps you hanging on his every word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping, terrifying narrative
One day, Alec hears the Black whinny in fear and anger. He runs to the stables and is horrified to find a hypodermic in the straw of Black's stall. It is deadly. The only clue is a strange medallion with a bird on it. But then something even more frightening happens the next day. Alec goes to the stable to find out that an Arabic man has come all the way overseas to see-and claim--the Black. He really is the Black's owner, so off the
Black goes. Thinking there is a connection between the hypo and the claimer of the Black, Alec, Henry, and trainer Mr. Volence travel to Arabia. They battle starvation and the hot sun with the help of a young Arab boy named Raj to find the Black. But when they get to the Arab cheiftan's home, they end up riding among warring tribes...warring tribes who are threatening to plunder and kill...and the leader turns out to be the man who tried to kill the Black! Then Alec is captured by the Black's evil nemisis--and may be killed himself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Black Stallion Rocks
This was a good book, but it had some parts I didn't like.I didn't like it when the owner of Black went to Alec's house and said that that was his horse. The author should have had the owner steal Black instead of telling Alec. The part I like was when Alec was racing on Black in the desert. The author used good details when describing Black.I enjoyed the fact Alec was the only one who can ride Black .I would recommened this book to anyone who loves horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black is back in a whole new book!
The Black stallion is a wonderful book some parts are scary and some are sad. But in the end it all comes together in a wonderful horse mystery/adventure! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hoofs and Wheels
While women generally ride for pleasure to feel the wind and the movement of the horse beneath, a boys ride is different in that it is the power and speed of the ride that are most dear to him in these chariots of fire, the roar of the engine, the hoofs and the noise of the wheels that inspire their thrill. Boys tend to drive either their horses or their cars to see the height of their power, and whether the beauty of black or the silver shine of white, the joy of the command lies in the skill of the rider and the knowledge of his horse, or his engine, a sight that most can appreciate, understand, and admire.

The Billy and Blaze series is great fun. Young boys, even those not interested in horses, will love these books. My 7yo has never had an interest in horses (he thinks they smell bad) but he hangs on to every word of these adventurous stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thunderhead
This is a great book and I would recomend it for many people.
Thunderheads mother was Flika, Ken Mclaughtins first filly. Thunderhead was the first white horse born on the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming. Thunderhead jumps fences and climbes mountains. He finds a passage way to a valley that Ken later names Valley of the Eagles. This leads to an old albino stailion, Thunderhead gets a few nips and hoof marks before he is able to get out of the valley and return to the ranch. Thunderhead adventually goes back to the valley and kills the albino staillion. He adeopts the mares that the albino had once cared for. Thunderhead retutns home and is caught by Kens dad Captain Mclaughtin. Thunderhead is sceduled to be in a race because he is very fast and powerful. Thunderhead starts the race but looses his themper and bucks his rider off, the jumps a fence. The Goose Bar Ranch already has a stallion, Banner. Ken, knowing he can't keep his horse locks, Thunderhead in the Valley of the Eagles. Anyone who likes horses and is in middle school or above should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book! Very Intruiging
Thunderhead is definately a must read! Ken's favorite horse Flicka gives birth to a white colt, it's a throwback, the only white horse on the ranch. And, on top of that, it looks like an ugly goblin and "scrabbles" instead of runs, when Ken wanted it ever so badly to be a champion racehorse. After a long time the horse grows into a beautiful, muscular horse and earns the name Thunderhead. Now the only problem is, his EXTREMELY bad temper and wild spirit. Throughout this book, Ken tries to gain the horses trust, and trains it to become a racehorse. And, you'll have to read the rest of the book to find out what happens. I recommend this book to all readers above 4th or 5th grade!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I loved THUNDERHEAD. It is powerful and moving, and Ken matured a lot! Thunderhead is such a wild, hideous colt in the beginning, but he turns into a handsome colt--and grows wilder. Ken fears he won't be a racer. Thunderhead is always escaping to dominate a herd of wild mares. He fights with the legendary Albino and becomes strong and fierce. The ending is..a surprise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for any age
I loved reading these books as a pre-teen, and again as an
adult when I discovered they were written on a ranch next to
the one I lived on in southeast Wyoming. The author uses
real locations and real situations (the crater doesn't
exist except in her imagination, but almost everything else
is true to life), which some might think is a bit intense for
young readers, but I find that children are more than capable
of understanding and enjoying these tales. I must correct the
reviewer who spoke of Anasazi in the books- they never made it
that far north, and I don't remember any references to them
that Mary O'Hara made either. Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Crow
Nations were all represented in this area. Mary O'Hara does a
wonderful job of using her real life experiences to make a
series of books that allow us to share her pioneer life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Sequel to Flicka
The second in the Flicka trilogy, "Thunderhead" is a masterpiece of its genre. Like "My Friend Flicka," it isn't a children's book per se. It's a dark book, really, reflecting a lot of harsh reality, from Rob McLaughlin's ongoing and desperate struggle to keep his Goose Bar Ranch from financial ruin, to the constant and sometimes overwhelming battle to survive against the harsh Wyoming wildnerness, to a son's increasingly rebellious need to prove himself as a man.

Ken McLaughlin has matured greatly in this book. He is no longer the quiet dreamer afraid of his own shadow, and particularly of his father. But his thoughtful sensitivity is still evident, and when his beloved mare Flicka gives birth to her first foal, Ken must strain all his inner resources to fight for her and her baby.

The foal, Thunderhead, is a throwback to a wild strain that Rob has tried for years to breed out of his thoroughbred stock. Pure white and headstrong, Thunderhead is a direct descendant of a renegade stallion that sired a line of untameable horses. Rob takes one look at the colt, and wants him sold, gelded, or worse. But Ken loves Flicka's son, and battles to train him as a racehorse. As father and son face off in love and fury, each refuses to budge. And gentle Nell, long the backbone of the family, cannot help this time. She is facing the first real crisis in her marriage--one that threatens to tear the family apart as much as the standoff over Thunderhead.

I highly recommend this book for adults who love a good, old-fashioned adventure with lots of action and scenery, and lots of good, meaty characterizations. In my view, the book is not appropriate for young children. It can be graphic and scary, but an older child will love the adventure. ... Read more

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether.

Marguerite Henry's Newbery Honor Book has captivated generations of boys and girls both with its thrilling descriptions of true incidents from the tiny island of Chincoteague, and its realistic yet wonderfully magical atmosphere. This story of an animal brought into captivity poignantly reveals the powerful opposing forces of humans and nature. Wesley Dennis's pen-and-ink ponies are masterfully depicted with rippling muscles, shaggy coats, and free spirits. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Misty: a timeless horse tale
This book is as exciting and touching today as it was when it was first published, in 1947. First of all, there`s the startling discovery that Western mustangs are not America`s only "wild" horses- the feral ponies of Assateague, off the coast of Virginia, also qualify! Henry begins the story with the possible origin of Misty`s ancestors: they may have been the survivors of a shipwrecked Spanish galleon. She then brings the tale up to the 20th century and introduces young Paul and Maureen Beebe, who are longing to keep a pony for themselves, instead of merely breaking them in for others. The rest of the book deals with their efforts to do just this. Paul has his heart set on the wild mare Phantom, but the siblings hav`nt reckoned on the attachment they develop to her young foal, Misty. The author is expert at capturing the depth of feeling that one can have for an animal, especially that of a child or youth who has just discovered this phenomenon. As well as being informative about Assateague and its neighboring island, Chincoteague[home of the Beebe family], and the annual Pony Penning Day round-up, Henry gives the reader a realistic picture of two young people dealing with a real moral dilemma: whether to give the Phantom her freedom. Misty is a rewarding book, no matter if you`re a child or an adult when you read it. I also give high marks to its two sequels. There just are not many writers like Marguerite Henry these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANIMAL lovers this is the book
Misty of the Chincoteague is about the Phantom, a horse that is wild and free. Little does the Phantom know that there is a dream of a little girl and boy? The boy's name is Paul and the girl's name is Maureen they are brother and sister that have the same dream to buy the Phantom. Their grandpa owns a horse farm where a whole bunch of people go out and capture horses to sell them. So Paul and Maureen start working because they want that horse so bad. They're going to do anything to get the Phantom. Does Paul and Maureen's dream come true?
Misty was one of the best stories I have ever read! If you are a horse lover then this book is for you! This is all thumbs up. An animal lover out there if you are looking for a magnificent irresistible wonderful book to read this book is for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Misty of Chincoteague
Misty of Chincoteague is a wonderful book for all ages. The Phantom is the wildest horse on the Island of Assateague. The "map" of the United States on her whithers and the fact that she ran like the wind made the lead mare of the Pied Piper's herd the most desirable horse on the entire island. Paul and Maureen Beebe want the Phantom, and work hard to earn the hundred dollars to buy her if she is caught. But no one can catch the Phantom, right?
Surprises are in store for the young reader, and old friends will enjoy coming back time and time again to this book for all, Misty of Chincoteague.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for pony lovers!
This is one of our daughter's favorite pony books and a classic story. As a publisher of another children's pony book, "Mint's Christmas Message" we think "Misty" is the standard against which other children's pony books should be measured.

4-0 out of 5 stars Misty of Chincoteague
In the book Misty of Chincoteague, the hearts of one little boy (Paul), and his little sister are captured when they find out that they have the chance to catch the pony of their dreams on pony penning day. Marguerite Henry, the author, really grabs the hearts of the people who love horses everywhere with the interesting surprises of this book.
On pony penning day Paul and his sister find out that you should always expect the unexpected because it is always libel to happen. When Paul takes his turn to go catch the pony he wants someone or something makes all of his dreams fall apart. When he finds that it is hard to catch a pony when you can't find it, his heart is shattered.
I would recommend this book to people who love horses very much because if you know about horses then you will be more interested in this. I liked this book because I am one of those people who love horses very much. And any book that has to do with horses then I will at least read about it than if I like it I will read it. And if I don't like it then I won't read it. Recommending is not the easiest job but when it comes to this then it is very easy to do.
So to wrap it all up there has been many surprising twists to this book. And the best part is there is more than one so I am not really saying goodbye. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite book of all times.
When I was in the fifth grade a perceptive teacher introduced me to this book. I have loved it ever since. Ken is a powerful character because you love his abstractness, his absorption in his make-believe world, and his gentleness, but you can also understand his father's annoyance and concern with his lack of responsibility. Both characters are strong with the mediating influence of Nell creating the balance needed. The story is beautiful, well crafted and poignant. I read it several times a year, and every time I learn new things about myself and the people around me through the characters interaction with each other, and the thought-provoking, excellent, descriptive writing. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book in the Universe!
I have to admit, when I first saw this book, I saw a big thick book. But then I read it , and now it is my favorite book! I loved how they gave such a description that you felt like you were there. I could realy relate to Ken, and how he stuck to what he did and was nervous about it. I liked how the love of Flicka stayed with Ken even when she was in pain. This is such a good book I recomend it to anyone!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Luv Horses!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friend Flicka was a wonderful, but sad book.Everyone will enjoy reading it.It's a "wonderful" book!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Daydreamer Who Survived
As a 10 year old child, this book horrified me. The brutality of ranching life and the oppression of a sensitive son by his parents has haunted me to this very day. Having grown up on a farm years ago, I can attest to the hardships and, at times, horrible events (such as slaughtering hogs). Still, the "truth" is in one's mind, not in the reality others believe to be objectively true.

What parent today would tell their child, "Quit dreaming!"

I never quit and I left the farm to never return. I became a multi-published commercial writer, an artist, and a professor, despite this book and the negative message it relayed.

I realize I'm criticizing a classic here, but it has its downside. Parents might want to be aware of that. Artistic and gentle kids who read this book will need some extra support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I have read this book a number of times, and it still stands up to the test of time.
Flicka is a special horse, and has a special bond with the young hero of this story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for readers intruged to learn about horses
Very good book, I own it. Excellent information at hand at any time. Origins, colors, uses and more of each breed. Just not enough color and I think it is a bit too long written for younger riders and horse lovers alike. Otherwise it would have gotten five stars for older enthusiasts but four is quite well overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it as a kid and still do!
I remember coming across this book in my school library when I was about 10 or 11 and being enchanted with Wesley Dennis' beautiful paintings, as well as the little stories Mrs. Henry told of each breed. Some are condensations of her other books, like Misty of Chincoteague and King of the Wind. Very informative, as they don't simply tell you dry facts but bring each breed to life in the context of a particular time and place. Definitely recommend it & any of Mrs. Henry's books to horse-crazy kids or adults!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.
This is a special book to me, as it was the book upon which my son's first book report was written about a dozen years ago. It was also the last time he needed my collaboration on a school project.
The story is a nice introduction to American History and to the world of horses, both of which continue to interest him as he heads off to an Ivy-laden college this fall.

3-0 out of 5 stars Growing Big Together
I must be romping through my third childhood because I still love this classic equine tale about the founder of a truly
American breed of horse. I enjoyed it now just as much as when I was young; Henry's story holds up with successive readings
since the human emotions are sincere, and the dramatic events are true. The young protagonist, Joel, has a passion for horses; as a young man he dreams of finding his beloved, Lil Bub, the first Morgan colt whom no one wanted.

Even more, this is a story of Vermont--famous for its Green Mountains and courageous patriots--during the War of 1812. Later on in the story we witness a brief but triumphant presidential visit, where the Morgan horse was publically recognized.

Plenty of dialogue, short chapters and excellent b/w sketches by Wesley Dennis combine to give us a delightful gallop into the Yankee past. No one knows for certain who sired the "little" colt, whom only a poor boy could admire, but tales of his racing speed and pulling strength quickly made him a local legend, with farmers eager to get stud rights. Like BLACK BEAUTY this book is written for kids and horse lovers of all ages. PS: Because they are so strong and fast, Morgans are used in the National Park Service.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little too steriotypical, but a good read overall
The story line is very lovely, a book about the strong bond between a boy and the sire of a truely noble breed of horses: the Morgan. It is based on a true story. Readers should be warned that some of the characters are made out to be very steriotypical Vermont poor folk *limited vocabulary and wearing scraps of leather for shorts, ect. ect. ect.* and may be offended by such. I myself have heard several complaints on this. However, the overall effect does present a believable story. Worth looking into.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
This book was pretty good, but could be compared to King of the Wind and Born to Trot. This book was a good book, but not the best of Marguerite Henry's books.King on the Wind and Born to Trot are much more exciting to read. All in all,I liked the book, but found it boring in some parts.I am still a faithful M.H. reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful historical fiction for young people......!!!!
My seven year old daughter and I finished this book last night. She was very sad to have it end. What a wonderful account of the devastating storm that hit the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague and the relief efforts to rebuild the islands and the devastated wild pony population.

It was very heartwarming to read in the epilogue excerpts from actual letters of children that sent in their hard earned money to buy back the ponies sold at previous Pony Penning Days to replenish the wild herds of Assateugue. These children and others like them preserved a tradition that had been maintained for over 100 years and because of them continues on today. In fact, Marguerite Henry dedicated this book to those very children that made it all possible.

Marguerite Henry does an excellent job of using local dialect in the telling of the story, especially with Grandpa and Grandma. You can not help but become involved in the characters and their concerns become very real to you.

I read this book many many years ago and had forgotten a great deal of the story. One of the things I did remember was Misty being put in Grandma's kitchen to wait out the storm.

If you are like me and read this book many years ago I encourage to reread it. You will be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this great book!
This book is about a horse named Misty. She is going ot have a colt. The colt is a Mare and her name is Stormy. Stormy`s family tree is made up out of The Phantom and the pied piper had Misty, Misty and Wings had Sormy. But there was a flood and the flood killed Wings. He was a good horse untill he drounded in the flood. The reason Misty didn`t die was because she was put into a house. The house belonged to Mrs. and Mr. Bebbe. They had two grandchildren. Their names were Paul and Maureen. Paul and Maureen were very excited that Misty was going to have a colt. But Grandpa thought that Misty`s colt was dead inside of her. Grandma said that she was not even going to die when she was born.

If you like to read you will like this book as much as I did. The reason I liked this bookwas because it is a true story and it was written before it happened. This book was a little better than Misty of Chincoteague. I loved reading this book because it was interesting. It also was filled with action and excitment.

The theme of this story was to save Misty from the flood. If they didn`t save Misty her foal won't be able to talk Misty's place as the wild mare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foal of Waves
This is the true story of Misty, a famous horse who gave birth to a foal named Stormy during a raging, devastating storm. The book then presents an accurately detailed account of rebuilding the island of Chincoteauge after the storm.
The plot of this is exciting and suspenseful book twists just to the reader's liking, and has times of slow sadness. The odd regional colloquial speech of the characters may sometimes confuses the reader, but it is so well written you it presents a mental picture better than a movie.
This is a very interesting book to me. Its many scenes convey many different emotions: some humor, some happiness, and some intense sorrow. I am also extremely inspired by Paul Beebe, who shows courage and self-control as I would like to. It is a favorite of mine, and a worthy addition to any bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
this was a very good book and i enjoyed it a lot. everyone should read it because it has a very good story line. i would reccomend this book to people who love to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Misty's Survival
No pony would want to be pregnant in the middle of the big hurricane that killed almost everything in Chincoteague and Assateague. Paul and Maureen love the fact that Misty is going to have a baby until the storm hits. When Paul and Maureen leave Misty, everyone is extremely worried. Misty needs to find a way to survive along with her unborn baby! This is a wonderful story that will have you hanging on to every page. I recommend this book to anybody who has read Misty of Chincoteague or anyone who likes horse stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blaze and the Gray Spotted Pony
The is the BEST of the charming and beautiful Billy and Blaze series by CW Anderson. Billy gets a human friend this time, who loves horses as much as Billy does. This friend wants a gray spotted pony for his birthday--Billy and Blaze have to go FIND him one. It's a hackneyed plot (no pun intended, Hackney lovers) but it is done right without any silliness. But this is a Billy and Blaze book, and any collector of them know the REAL reason to buy a Billy and Blaze book are for the amazing CW Anderson pencil drawings! He was named "Sham" for the sun, this golden red stallion born in the Sultan of Morocco's stone stables.Upon his heel was a small white spot, the symbol of speed. But on his chest was the symbol of misfortune.Although he was as swift as the desert winds, Sham's proud pedigree would be scorned all his lifeby cruel masters and owners.

This is the classic story of Sham and his friend, the stable boy Agba. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great historical fiction for kids
This book was given to me when I was barely eight years old, almost thirty years ago. I learned how to read books that took more than one sitting with "King of the Wind".

The story is of a mute Morrocan stable boy, Agba, and a foal, Sham, who is born to one of the royal mares Agba cares for. Sham...and Agba...are selected to be part of a gift to the King of France. Their adventures in Europe are filled mostly with despair and cruelty, until Sham sires a foal that becomes the beginnings of the Thoroughbred breed we know today (this part is true; Sham was renamed "The Godolphin Arabian"; all Thoroughbreds must include in their pedigreeone of the three specific founding sires, and the Godolphin Arabian is one of them).

There's a lot here: adventure, triumph over adversity, a respect for other cultures, the care of the creatures that share our lives, and a healthy dose of humor about the absurdities of the powerful or elite.

As a kid, I eagerly devoured any Marguerite Henry book I could find. It's well worth it to get hard-cover editions that include the wonderful full-color illustrations by Wesley Dennis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for kids who love horses
I am now 32 years old, and this book remains vivid in my mind as one of my all-time childhood favorites. The story of the mute stable boy Agba and his travels with 'his' beloved horse Sham exposes young readers to a variety of cultures and stressses the value of faithfulness and loyalty without being at all preachy. Sham, sent as a gift from the Sultan of Morocco to the King of France, is mistreated during the voyage and arrives looking like an old nag instead of the young, well-bred Arab stallion he is. The king's rejection of the horse is the beginning of a new journey as Sham -- with Agba always there to care for him -- passes from one owner to another, eventually becoming "The Godolphin Arabian" one of the three founders of the Thoroughbred bred. This book is worth buying in the hardback form, especially if that means getting Wesley Dennis' gorgeous illustrations in color

5-0 out of 5 stars "The king of the wind is loes."
King of the wind is a great book. I am not a hores book person but I really liked this book. Sham was born with a singh of bad luk witch was the weat ear but he was also born with a white spot on his hind leg withc was good luk and that he would be a fast running hores. Sham, Agba,(is the mute boy who takes care of him) and a cat. Thoes three go through many things to gether and live many places. The book has a pretty happy ending and you should read it. I am going to give you about ten words of advice, GIVE THIS BOOK A TRY AND GO READ IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book For All Ages!
This will touch your heart in so many ways. It brings you into the life of a small boy and his special bond with a horse. You will follow their journey that goes many places.

The first time I picked up this book and read it I fell in love with it. I even now in my read this book at least once a year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have told more of the real story...
Marguerite Henry took great license in telling the story of the Godolphin Arabian, but it's likely there were two reasons she did so; first, because she based the majority of her novel on heavily romanticised reports like that which appeared in Western Horseman in 1949; second, to illustrate to young children what could happen to perfectly good horses that were considered worthless because of prejudice or unwillingness to see what was there.

The real Sham was born in Tunis and given by the Bey of Tunis to King Louis XV with a group of other horses. But there's no evidence that he was reduced to pulling a cart in the Paris streets before rescue by Edward Coke. Coke probably got him from the Duke of Lorraine, who'd gotten him from the King.

A contemporary described Sham as "beautiful but half-starved", so the rough sea voyage with the greedy staff is likely true, even if the cart-horse story is not. He also said that Sham (he spelled it Shami, and other accounts have "Scham") was temperamental and generally disliked by the stable hands. A vet who cared for Sham in his last years said he was built to sire champions: "his shoulders were deeper, and lay farther into his back, than those of any horse ever yet seen. Behind the shoulders, there was but a very small space ere the muscles of his loins rose exceedingly high, broad, and expanded, which were inserted into his hindquarters with greater strength and power than in any horse I believe ever yet seen of his dimensions, viz fifteen hands high."

Agba was real; there are portraits of the little horse with a handsome dark-skinned young man in flowing Arab dress and turban. Whether or not he was mute is debatable. Again, many of the later accounts have been greatly romanticised. But Grimalkin the stable cat was real too, according to early records which report his presence in the famous portrait.

There is no record of the apocalyptic battle with Hobgoblin. We can look at that, and Sham's subsequent exile to Wicken Fen, as symbolic of the prejudice felt by the complacent English toward this relatively small, strange-looking newcomer. The truth is that Sham did mate with Lady Roxane and sired Lath. He sired 116 others in his long lifetime.

With all the interest in Seabiscuit of late, one would like to point out that as a direct descendant of Man O'War, he was also a direct descendant of the Godolphin Arabian. Just another horse who seemed worthless, but was not, and came from behind to prove the superiority of Arabian blood.

Look up "Davenport Arabians" to learn more about this proud line. ... Read more

This time Billy and Blaze set out west (for a family holiday) and encounter great boy adventures and make a new cowboy friend.

Billy and Blaze books teach courage and responsibility and consideration for others. These things do seem to be lacking in a lot of children's literature these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man o' War, an AMAZING Thoroughbred Champion!!!
This was the best book I've ever read!! If you love horses, horseracing and Man o' War, I highly recomend this book! Even if you don't have an interest in horses, you would still love this book! It's about Man o' War from the night he was foaled, to the tragic day he died... It gives you full details of his races, winning an astonishing 20 of his 21 starts..The race he lost, I think was unfair! (Read to find out!!) It tells alittle about some winners he sired..I learned a lot about this amazing Champion from reading this book...There is soOo much more I can say about this book..but I want you to read to find out!! ENJOY IT!! I KNOW YOU WILL!!*

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for horse lovers of all ages!
I have been a fan of thoroughbred racing since the age of 13 (21 years now!) and I absolutely loved this book when I was a boy. I recently purchased a new copy of this book in the gift shop at the Kentucky Horse Park wondering if I would still appreciate this book by the author of the Black Stallion series, which I also avidly read as a child (and which I also think can be enjoyed as a horse crazy adult.) This book has lost none of it's beauty and grace even as I read it as a 34 year old adult. I have been to Saratoga several times and can envision Man O' War's first time on the track as Farley wrote it; his descriptive powers are at their height in this book. It is really a timeless book about a truly timeless thoroughbred champion. This book can be enjoyed on many different levels by readers of all ages. If you are a horse enthusiast and/or racing fan, I would strongly recommend giving this a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Amazing Ones
There are other Thoroughbreds that made names for themselves, yet this book stressed one fact that makes Man O' War stand out: He was held back, yet still won 20 of his 21 races. "Big Red" packed power and it's a pity he was never pressed to his top speed. This fictional biography gives a great insiders look into the touching life of an amazing stallion, and I completely recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I'm 15 years old and just want to say that this novel is not just for the children. I am an avid equestrian and found this book in our school library, I read it three times! I adore this book, it keeps you on the edge of your seat and keeps your interest the whole way through. The style that it was written in was superb. My only complaint is that it had to end! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful books about a boy and his horse
My son loves the Billy and Blaze series. The "adventures" they have are told in such a way that the children can imagine themselves taking part in them.

In this particular story Billy sets off to find a "lost" quarry. This one reminded me of many of the "adventures" my brother and I had as children in the forests near our grandparents farm in Montana.

It is nice to share a quiet, interesting story with my son. Most authors today seem to think they need to compete with television and movies, therefore their books seem to be nothing more than written out tv shows and action flicks.

The other thing my son and I enjoy in these books are the drawings. They are very good and realistic. We have the oppotunity to study some nice art while reading a pleasant book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Billy and Blaze
As a child (first and second grade) I read this series. Billy was without a doubt my favorite character from any of the childrens books available to me then. They are well writen, easily followed, in or out of torder. I am very please to be able to buy them for my nieces and my own child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story for Boys
My son (4 next week) wanted some "Wild, Wild West" stories. I found the wonderful books by C.W. Anderson in the library. I bought several of the reprints in paperback because he loves the stories so. The gentle adventures of Billy and his pony Blaze are a wonderful way for young boys to learn the virtues of loyalty and friendship and the love of animals. In this book Billy and Blaze spend a day looking for a forgotten quarry. They have a few adventures trying to get over the overgrown trail. The quarry is as wonderful as Billy pictured. He gets a bonus - he finds a puppy running from a fox. Billy and Blaze take their new friend home. The realistic pen and ink drawings illustrating the story are very much enjoyed by my son. I'm happy to have found these books reprinted. ... Read more
