Those really interested in all things ST:VOY, and Janeway in particular, MUST also read: Mosaic: A Novel. This book has the complete surprising, eye-popping, fun and amazing life story of Capt. Janeway; written by Jeri Taylor (the master-mind and one of the original creators of ST:VOY), Mosaic is an amzing peice of work. Mosaic is the geared for adults, but both is these books put together is a perfect look in to the wonderful life of Captain Janeway. Also, check out Mosaic in tape: it's read by Kate Mulgrew; the actriss that plays Capt. Janeway on Star Trek Voyager!
The characterization is good, but there is virtually no story in this one. It is too much of a description about teenage-student life and serious storytelling is missing. It's worth a read, especially if you like Janeway. After all, it gives us some bacround information about Janeway's first days in the academy, but it's nothing nearly as good as it perhaps might have been.

It was however much too short. Fortunately, the author who however held the book well in order, as she described the layers of Janeway's character with the help of an unoriginal, but well executed plot. If you like Janeway ,and even if for some uncompehendable reason you dont; read it.

Not as good as I'd hoped, but you should read it anyway because of the insight on the character of Kathryn Janeway, wich repairs some of the damage caused by not-so-good plotting, short lenght and uninteresting side-characters.

They have some problems, still. First of all, they are way too short. Secondly: the characters are teenagers. I am 15 myself and that's probably the biggest reason I don't like young characters (in anything). Why? Because they act about 3 to 5 years younger than they should (in Wesley Crusher's case: about 10). The starfleet academy books, in general, have been fairly believable in this field, although the characters still sometimes feel a bit immature. This particular book uses characters that behave, in my opinion, like people behave when they are about 12 years old. Plus they are complete stereotypes. For example the teamleader is a young male human who has joined starfleet because of his father. (Has anyone ever joined becase of his/her mother, brother, sister cousin...?) I bought this book in hopes of a view to the character of Geordi LaForge, but to my dissapointment he was characterized poorly, and didn't even feel like the main character. The plot was weak, the storytelling predictable... It's barely readable, but dont waist your money on it.

Book Description Cadet Worf arrives at Starfleet AcademyTM as the first Klingon to gain entrance since the Federation-Klingon, Peace Treaty. Raised on Earth by human parents, Worf wonders whether he is still a Klingon, the proud member of an honorable warrior race, or is he more human? Command-level classes fill his schedule, but nothing prepares him for his fellow cadets, among them his human foster brother. Intelligent, ambitious, and confident, the Academy cadets make life difficult for the young warrior. Worf must win over his classmates -- including the always logical Vulcans and the fierce Brikar -- even though they are still trained to think of him as the enemy. Then a routine trip to a training satellite turns into an unexpected disaster, and Worf must unite the cadets and risk his life before a terrible accident destroys the entire mission. Reviews (7)
All of this make a story. On the other hand, this bookis only the beginning of Worf's story. I really can imagine what Worf's Academy days like thanks to this book.
They are more notable to fans of the current Trek books though because they introduced us to several characters who reappear as part of Peter David's NEW FRONTIER series of Trek novels. For the first time, meet Mark McHenry, Soleta, and Zak Kebron, and see what they were like in the years before they served Mac Calhoun on the Excalibur. ... Read more | |
