5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know About World History
This book, though it is suggested reading for 4th to 6th graders, was helpful to me. Not only am I an adult, I am in the process of getting certified to teach high school social studies. It provided me the essentials that I must cover for any class (other than at the college level). The page layout is excellent; the variety in print type and color as well as maps and pictures made it a"fun" reading and learning experience. I highly recommend it for students, parents and social studies teachers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I used this book in my french class and I thought it was great practice and very helpful, but yeah, be warned -- this is just the student copy WITHOUT the tapes or the answers so pretty useless it's used in a classroom setting.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
This book is simply a question book. In order to use it properly you need the audio cassettes and the the teacher's guide( to check your answers!) which is impossible to purchase unless you are a teacher. It makes no sense why it is sold on it's own. A complete waste of money........

1-0 out of 5 stars No answers + no tapes or CDs = Useless
I ordered this book after reading the 5 star review, and upon receiving it realized that it is a STUDENT edition, with NO ANSWERS and NO tapes or CDs (or even a written script) for the listening sections! Without answers and tapes, it is useless as an AP study guide! The Amazon description of the book should state this, so other people don't waste their time ordering it. I couldn't find the missing items on Amazon, so I searched the web until I found the teacher guide ($16.97) and tapes ($49.97) on the Prentice Hall webpage.

5-0 out of 5 stars J'utilise ce livre dans ma classe de français!
I use this book in my French class. It's the book mon prof uses to test us. I think the listening exercises provided in here are wonderful. The other exercises are good as well. The vocabulary provided in the back is also very good. It's an excellent prep tool for anyone in AP French language. Bon chance! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars SSHSAT Book review
There are a few prep books in the market, I woul rate them as below
1. Barron's How to prepare for SSHSAT ----4 stars
2. Kaplan's SCI-Hi------------------------3 stars
3. Princeton Preview SSHSAT---------------3 stars
4. Arco Specialized science High exam-----2 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars I GOT INTO STUYVESANT!!!!
I bought this book preparing for another exam. When it was time to prepare for the Specialized High school exam I picked up this book again. My friends thought I had no chance. They were paying $1,000 for courses. While I was just using this book. And now Im in Stuyvesant and they're not. It's all thanks to this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I MADE IT INTO STUYVESANT JUST BY USING THIS BOOK!
I made it into Stuyvesant High School. I didn't use any other book (I couldn't find any). This book really helped me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spend your money wisely
I was accepted to Stuyvesant High school. To prepare for the exam, I used almost all the books available on the market, including Arco.

Do not plan to rely on Arco books as a primary source of test preparation. The questions are not challenging enough. The reading passages do not share the same depth of analysis like those found on the exam. The math questions are much too simple and require almost no thinking skills whatsoever. The logic questions do not encourage the reader to reason through a situation. As a result, the user of Arco books is mislead about the exam's degree of difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tried and True
ARCO's Specialized Science High Schools Admissions Test guide was a staple when I was preparing for the big test. It explained the exam format, gave test-taking strategies, and provided ten short sample quizzes. It gives a wide variety of sample questions, and explains why the right answer is correct. Using this resource, I made the Bronx Highschool of Science! If you are serious about the science high schools, the ARCO SSHSAT book is a must. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to expectations
This workbook contains 5 pages of SAT9 general overview and
howto suggestions about improving test scores such as answer the easy questions first.
This is followed by one example of an SAT 9 test with a short (4-5 sentences) paragraph of suggestions/tips for each test category (2-4 pages each including answers).
For example, the language context category is preceded by the suggestion that reading
the entire sentence will help in finding the meaning of the unknown word.
The book is no more that a glorified SAT test with less
than expected amount of extra help. The book's scope is thus
very limited in its use for preparing an SAT student.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Prepare for the SAT 9 - 3rd Grade is great help!
This text is a helpful guide to warming up for the dreaded SAT 9 test. It guides parents and their test taking children in the types of questions that might appear on the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Math Made Easy Kindergarten Workbook
My 5 year old daughter loved this book. It kindled a real interest in learning. She found that being able to stick a gold star on the progress chart for each completed page gave her a great sense of achievment. I felt the workbook gave an excellent introduction to all mathematic principals in a varied and child friendly manner. The book progresses gradually, reinforcing the all the skills and math concepts that 5-6 year olds should be familiar with. We were so impressed that we bought the next book in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
This is a great book. It really does make math easy! It's worth the price. I got this for my children and it's a great math book. It is very easy for children to follow and learn. It came with gold star stickers my children love to get on their papers. This is a workbook for children. It has parental or teachers instructions page by page in the back of the book. The book starts with the number 1. It has pictures asking the child how many of the objects are their, at the bottom of the page it has "copy the pattern". Then they write the word One, match the number one with how many objects their are in a group, Then it proceeds on to the number 2 - 10. Then the book goes through various activities such as connect the dots using the numbers 1-10. The numbers 11 & 12 are on one workbook page, 13&14 and so on to 19 & 20. Then it goes to can you remember, More than activities, add one more, add 2 more, take 1 away etc teaching simple adding and subtraction. The book reviews shapes, thick and thin lines, tall, short, color, inside & outside, front and behind, beside, between, the same, different, sorting, find the missing numbers etc. One suggestion is to make copies for later lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Math for 5-6 year olds
Kids are always looking for something fun to do, so if your child likes to color, they can learn all about numbers and shapes while being artistic.

Each page is well organized with colorful borders and black-and-white "coloring book type" pictures. The focus is on preparation for a more formal study of math.

This is a complete home-study program to encourage children to practice the essential math skills they are learning at school. The workbooks were compiled and tested by math experts and are designed to increase your child's success at school.

In the front of the book you will find a Progress Chart and a page of stars. Once your child has completed each page, you stick a star in the box that corresponds with the lesson. The workbook is designed to help your child explore the world of numbers in a fun and enjoyable way. There are connect the dots games, Can you remember? challenges and counting games.

The Content:

Names of the numbers 1-10 and 11-20

Sequence, or order of the numbers.
Number values. Understanding the quantity that each number represents and that, for example, 5 is always 5. It may be 5 big buses in a row or 5 small
peas in a circle, but it is still 5!
That when counting, the last number names the set. Many children count the quantity accurately 1, 2, 3, 4, but in response to "how many?" they often say
the wrong number.
How to recognize written numbers.
How to write numbers.
How to recognize a number when it is written in words, and how to write it.
The concepts of more than and less than, initially by looking and then by counting.
Adding numbers together, language involved in the addition process, symbols for addition and subtraction.
Shapes and color
Measurement
Positional language - In front, behind, inside, outside, between, beside, above, etc.
Shapes, objects and patterns, identifying matching items, sorting things into
sets, adding to sets, recognizing patterns and putting events in a sequential order.

32 pages are devoted to "Notes for Parents." Here you will read about how to encourage your child to color in the illustrations and how this will help to develop pencil control, increase eye-hand coordination and build concentration. They advise a range of colored pencils or felt-tip pens. The page-by-page notes also give more insight into each activity sheet.

of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In case you didn't know...
If you're reading this, it's no news to you that test-taking is a skill apart from learning. The better one knows the subject, the more likely that person will score well. But a second--and important--factor is how well one knows how to prepare for and take a test. This brief book provides a nitty-gritty compendium of such vital skills.
I used this book in conjunction with the excellent, and broader, "What Smart Students Know" (Adam Robinson) to teach a small college orientation week class on school survival skills. This book is valuable in its directness and scope. At its price, it's really a "no-brainer" purchase (sorry, pun intended).

5-0 out of 5 stars For ALL Book-Lovers, Not Just Aspiring College Students
Many different universities and colleges provided the author with the names of works they recommend or use in first-year English classes. I remember seeing the first edition of this book when I was in high school and falling madly in love with it. Unfortunately, it was at the public library and someone lost it a month after I checked it out. I am an obsessive list-maker and this adds fuel to the fire of my two passions, lists and literature. Not all the books listed in here are predictable, canonical works, either. I'm surprised how many are out-of-print, making the search for great reading material even more fun. One gripe: no comprehensive index. I may just make my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great source for finding something worthwhile to read
This book was written by my high school english teachers. It was published and I purchased it years after I graduated from college. I'm using the book as a means to measure how "well read" I am. Whenever, I'm at a loss of what more to read, I pick up this gem and find numerous suggestions. Thank you Doug, Michelle, and Patty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective teaching tool
As soon as my college prep and Advanced Placement English students start complaining about "ALL" the reading we have in my class, I break out this little gem and read a couple examples from among the 103 representative college and university lists contained within its pages. The book also offers the high school student a reading program with the goal of reading 100 books from among the lists by the time they enter college. It is a sensible plan with a simple form to chart one's progress. This book has a place in every college prep classroom and on every college hopeful's bookshelf. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars How to Prepare for the SAT 9 - 4th grade
This is a good source for test preparation, second only to McGraw-Hill Spectrum Test Prep book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't buy again
We have the 2nd grade book in this series (different author, same editor) and are very satisfied. This one is a different story.

Questions are so clumsily worded as to have no real correct answer, regional variations in meanings of words are ignored, and some questions are just plain wrong (one question, for instance, asks students to find the misspelled word; all possible answers are spelled correctly, including the one listed as the "correct" answer in the key.)

In addition, it is heavily oriented to California's testing requirements. It may be very interesting to know which native American tribe lived in which section of California, but as the history of everything other than California is mostly ignored, it isn't much help in preparing children in other states for their tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
I have been using this book with my daughter and we love it. She and I were able to sit down together and work on it for over a half an hour. She does not like to do homework, and for her to work with me for that amount of time and remember what she was doing is great. The topics are straightforward and helpfull for me as a parent. I am looking forward to starting the fifth grade book with her. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparation and review
I bought three in these series of test books for my children. The tests can be divisible into short segments so are not overwhelming to the child (and are easier for a parent to encourage a child to do!) What I have found the most helpful so far is that the tests have identified a few areas in which my children could use some review. This is very helpful to a parent who wants to be thoroughly familiar with his/her child's skill levels. The other key advantage is that doing these tests periodically make the real test less strange and scary.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a good book for first time tester
It is very good book for younger child to get a felling what is the test looks like. It is step by step guide book to teach children how to take the test, also it is a fun book to read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but is it Good Enough?
It looked great on the outside. A book about how to do great in school, how to navigate your way around, and how to be popular. (I always wanted to know that) But when I finished reading it, it did not give any advice that I hadn't heard before, and it was very short. The parts that were good were good, but the parts that were bad were bad! It does not live up to its fellow American Girl books.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This book was really good! It had some really great tips for school and they work. I recommend it for grades 4 to 8 .I like how there were holes in it for your binder. It could have been more informative though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for girls in grades 5-9
This book is filled with practical advice and tips for school. It's even hole-punched so you can keep it in your binder or notebook. What makes this book unique is that it's in a fun, colorful style, unlike those 300-page study manuals that you will fall asleep within reading the first page.

"School Smarts" includes ideas, tips, and advice for homework, taking tests, popularity, organizing your school stuff, reading successfully, taking great notes, and much, much more. Also included are tons of fun quizzes, quotes from girls, ways to make homework more fun, and study tips. "School Smarts" is the perfect book for girls in grades 5-9. It will help you become a better student, no matter what your GPA is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay advice
This book is okay but if you are a Christian girl and you want a book with Christian values that talks about all sorts of stuff like friends and family and stuff then get "The Christian Girl's Guide to Being Your Best" by Legacy Press. You can also get a Christian book just about school called "The Junior High Survival Manual." You can get both at amazon too.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book sucks
I hated this book more than life itself. That's right, I hate life too. And do u know why? because everyone is so darn mean to everyone. and evryone has to be so darn negative. So anyway, i hate this book so much, i could burn it. actually, i already did. i tried out the advice at school and went from being cheerleader of the month to loser of the millenium. thanks a lot, american girl. ...
