5-0 out of 5 stars To Say Informative Would Be An Injustice
Where should I begin? This book is one of the most in-depth, comprehensive, and helpful Test Prep books I have seen so far. For students of AP Spanish, this book is almost a must as it covers all aspects of the course and gives an endless amount of tips that are sure to be helpful on test day. For those who are hesitant about buying this book and fearing that it will be another dull, inexplicable waste of money, I highly advise that you look at the contents that Amazon.com provides. Grammatical structures are fully covered and there is a huge array of vocabulary that fills almost every chapter to the brim. The authors of this book also include many students' weaknesses and help teach strategies to strengthen skills with many examples. Most importantly, however, is the fact that everything is explained thoroughly and in a manner that everyone can easily understand. Asterisks, underlined phrases, circled words, and bolded information along with tips to the side of the margins easily help focus the reader's attention on what information is crucial to retain. As far as familiarizing the student with the actual test is concerned, the book is filled with 3 practice tests and comes with 2 CDs which cover the speaking and listening portions of the exam. Aside from that, every chapter contains exercises that closely mirror actual test questions in order to further aid students. Overall, this book is almost vital for the average student looking to maximize his or her scores on the AP Spanish test. If reviewed nightly and taken seriously, this book can very well help the anxiety-plagued student who would normally make a 1, make a perfect 5. Very highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars neat guide
This scholastic bookfiles reading guide to Where the Red Fern Grows is great for homeschoolers and teachers. They can use the book for a complete unit study based on the book. I enjoyed using this book as the base in my unit with my 9 year old son while studying the book Where the Red Fern Grows. The book helped us to work though the book and have fun with it. Lots of great ideas are in this BookFiles guide. It reminds me of CliffNotes for young readers.

I would recommed this book for teachers, parents, and teachers. This is a great way to enhance the reading of a great book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
This book is very good in that it offers numerous questions, which gives the student very good practice, but the answers that follow have no explantions. Also, it lacks info on the actual format of the test, the pacing a student should use when taking it, and the time allowed. The tactics given are helpful, but this book would have been better if the book had set times the student should try to achieve, offered explanations to the preceding questions, and given more information about the format of the test. However, it did offer much practice, which was very useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LD Students CAN Help Themselves in School
Kids with learning disabilities often feel like failures in school. Their past experiences tell them that they are helpless to find ways to compete and succeed in the classroom. This book gives many practical, helpful suggestions that can turn a student who feels like a loser into a winner! The best thing an LD student can do is become his or her own best advocate. The ideas in this book make that possible. It is easy to read (about a third grade reading level) and organized clearly. Some of the chapters are titled: You CAN Get Organized, You CAN Learn in Different Ways, You CAN Handle Testing, You CAN Get Along with Others, etc. This emphasis on "you CAN" is just what people with learning disabilities need! The authors also include lists of suggestions for becoming a better reader, speller, more organized, etc. If you know someone with a learning disability, do that person and yourself a favor and get this book. Read it together, if possible. Rhoda Cummings and Gary Fisher have written several books about what they call Learning Differences (LD), and this is one of the best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars On their level
The author really knows how to get down to the child's level as he presents his ideas. Children enjoy taking his advice. It is a big help. Sometimes the resistance is the biggest issue. Sometimes not knowing how to do the work is a big issue which the child denies. This book helps children feel like trying and asking for help when needed. Another book that does this for the K-3 children is Little Lemon by Betsy Lee. I didn't see a place for recommending a book in addition to this one so I thought I'd mention it in the review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
My seven-year-old has been laughing ever since we received this book. I think it will help her!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good!
I have read many long, complex books on studying and study tips. Soon after using the complicated methods, I stumbled across this book. It was refreshingly simple and effective without any sort of complicated methods. A good reminder for the overwhelmed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty and helpful
This book is a sure way to get children laughing their way through homework. The meaningful jokes (by meaningful I mean that they are almost subliminally coaxing kids to do homework) are miracles. This writing style should be used more often! If the author comes out with other informative, witty and adorable books, I will be the first customer!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was GREAT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It was very helpful!
I'm a junior in high school and I've been reading this book bit by bit this semester to look for ways I can enhance my college applications. I've done all the typical high school stuff like being assistant editor of the newspaper, run track, and am the president of a couple of clubs, but I really want to stand out when I apply to colleges next year. I found a lot of great ideas in this book for doing just that--such as finding a study abroad program for this summer--I found one in Italy--and organizing a service program at my school.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who's looking to be a unique applicant in the college admissions process--especially if your college counseling office isn't very helpful at providing good ideas to students--mine sure isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gets a mom's stamp of approval
I bought this book for my two daughters after reading about it in a newsletter. I thought the title and premise sounded interesting: a book aimed at teens who are looking for "something more" from their high school experience than just joining a team sport or working on the high school yearbook. Not that these activities aren't great--they are--but some teens want to "go outside the box," just as this book's title implies. My girls were interested in filling their weekends with some interesting activities, and this book gave them--and me--a ton of ideas.
For instance, the chapter on study abroad has given both of my daughters the idea that they'd like to spend next summer studying abroad in Europe. This book tells them exactly how to find a good program, how to prepare for departure, and what to expect while studying abroad. The chapter on mentoring gave them the idea to both look for an adult to teach them more about a hobby they enjoy doing. One has located a watercolorist to teach her more about the art in exchange for helping out at her studio; my other daughter is shadowing a pediatrician once per week, and has a wonderful mentor who is teaching her lots about the field.
I am enthusiastically recommending this book to other parents, in the hopes to get more teens out in the world, doing things that will help them better understand themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to help you plan your high school years
I'm 16 and in the eleventh grade, and my mom gave me this book after she read about it in a newsletter. I needed some help finding activities to do this school year that would help me get excited about school again. It worked!

The book showed me exactly how I could enroll in a college course at a local university, which is working out great so far because I was getting pretty bored in high school math, and now I can take advanced calculus with freshmen in college. Before I read this book, I never knew that an opportunity like this existed.

This book also gave me the idea to find a mentor in a subject I'm interested in, who can help me get more out of it than I could in high school. On the campus where I'm taking the calculus class, I also found a graduate student in math who's willing to be my mentor and tutor me in advanced math.

If you're kind of tired of what your high school has to offer, check out the unique ideas provided in this book. Don't miss the chapters on job shadowing and apprenticeships, too--they've given me even more ideas I plan to try out this year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to make your summer amazing!
I picked up this book at the recommendation of my summer school teacher, and it really helped me find some meaningful activities to do to help me figure out what I'm really interested in. For example, I wanted to get more involved in the arts, but living in a small town there's not that much opportunity here to take organized classes. This book inspired me to offer my time for free to a local artist in exchange for her teaching me how to draw, something I wouldn't have thought of on my own.

I also started volunteering at a local animal hospital because I'm thinking about eventually becoming a vet, and this book showed me how to find organizations that are happy to take volunteers. Overall, I just loved the personal examples from other teens who have done similar things, and shared these stories with my friends to help inspire them. Overall, I think this book will be great for any teen like me who needs a jump-start to get their summer heading in an amazing direction!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
The Teenager's Guide.. is basically a cheap, glossed-over rehash of the Teenage Liberation Handbook.

If you've already read the aforementioned TLH, skip this book, because there is nothing very new or remotely inspiring in it. I couldn't even read the book in its entirety.

Filled with FYI boxes, bullet listings, and cheesy cartoon illustrations throughout, this book tells you of the various offerings out there such as apprenticeships, volunteerism, mentoring, study abroad, and taking classes outside of your high school.

In the section discussing mentoring, the author gives, IMO, some rather silly advice. She suggests you go out, find a person whom you would like to be your mentor and...ASK them if they will be your mentor. Yes, you ASK them verbally or in writing "will you be my mentor?". Personally, I think this is probably the surest way to scare a potential mentor away, not to mention what a vague and confusing question it is.

Greene also fails to mention how to search for information and resources on teaching yourself a subject, rather than just taking a class.

Overall, the Teenager's Guide has a very limited persepctive of "school outside the box." If it isn't in the form of a class or "service learning" opportunity, you can forget about learning whatever you're interested in.

If you want a REAL and truly life-changing guide to learning outside of school, I cannot begin to recommend the Teenage Liberation Handbook, by Grace Llewellyn. ... Read more

Book Description

Study is a process of knowing how to read and understand data so that you can use it in your life.

Successful study leads to self-satisfaction and success. It is only unsuccessful when you hit the three barriers to study and don’t know what to do about them. These barriers, enough to make a slow learner out of any student, are the only reasons one gets distracted or can’t concentrate. Study Skills for Life shows how to handle them.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great for anyone having reading difficulties!
I helped my son and an adult get through the course that is included in this book. They had wonderful results!

The adult was a guy who went through the public school system - 20 years in the workforce - but just felt his literacy level wasn't what it should be. He had never really learned the simplest grammar rules, and was confused about a lot of what he read.

When my son did this course, he was 9 years old. It was great for both people. The steps are laid out clearly - without all the "confusion" usually found in grammar instruction.

I always did very well in English classes, and always earned an "A" in English on my report cards - I read a great deal, too. But even I learned a lot from this course!

It's just so simple, anyone with a 4th grade reading level can do it. But it doesn't "talk down" to the student, so it's appropriate for adults, too.

The pictures are fun, and the cartoonist who drew them was a Disney cartoonist! The pages are nice and big, too. The hardback version is very nicely bound and can both it and the paperback can put up with a bit of abuse. (I have six kids, this is important to me!)

Highly recommended for any parent, teacher or tutor. Or anyone who knows someone whose literacy level could use a gentle but effective boost!

(I do recommend the "Learning How to Learn" book or the "Study Skills for Life" book be studied first.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Claptrap from the master
Fill your child's mind with the ravings of a deluded con artist!

Hubbard's entire theory of education boils down to one sentence:

"All failure to learn is caused by the student going past a word that is not understood."

In schools that use Hubbard's methods, the teacher is only allowed to hand the student a dictionary. Utter nonsense.

Interestingly, Hubbard himself was prone to making up words at the drop of a hat. You won't find a lot of the words in "Dianetics", for example, in any dictionary that isn't published by the church or one of the many front organizations that it operates.

Positive views of this book were almost certainly written by church members. Phrases like "handled" and "have found it to work for me" are straight cultspeak. If you want to learn more about the real L. Ron Hubbard, type "xenu" into any search engine and prepare to be amazed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I purchased this book for my daughter who was having trouble in school. This wonderful book taught both of us how to study. Not only has she made dramatic improvements, but I've been using the techniques as well and have found it to work for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Or, "How to combat the public education system..."

Do you know people who can't read and write, who studied subjects but now refuse to have anything to do with those subjects? This book means what it says. The famous fairy-tale friends are cleverly integrated into worksheetsthat introduce or reinforce first-grade-level reading concepts, such as usingadjectives or drawing on context clues to understand the meaning of words. Otherlessons discuss antonyms (words that are opposites), synonyms (words that meanthe same thing), and homophones (words that sound the same, but that havedifferent meanings and spellings, like night and knight). Clearexplanations of all these concepts are included in a feature called "Frankie'sFacts." These notes appear at the top of many pages and will help an adultexplain the concepts to a child. An adult will also need to explain thedirections for each worksheet. The workbook includes a large sheet of stickersdepicting little coins, jeweled pirate treasures, and Captain Frankie and theother characters from JumpStart, a bestselling software program forchildren.
